knows the material extremely well. Expects a lot from the students and class participation is important. cool teacher and cares about the education of his students
He's off the wall crazy. Teaches off anicent overhead projections and has hard tests.
COOL FOR AN OLD MAN. ENJOYED HIS RELEVANT STORIES
Had tough classes nice to have one I actually enjoy
Crane is Awesome. He expects a lot from his students but he is really helpful and his class is very interesting. Every thing he gives us to review is actually on the test. Again, he does have high expectations
I loved professor Crane! He is a very funny and knowledgeable guy. He expects a lot from you. Class participation is important. His tests are pretty easy if you read the chapters and your notes. He teaches this course, like if it was a 300-400 level, but you will b prepared for graduate school.Only 2 assignments & expects clarity. I recommend him.
Great teacher!! He knows what he is talking about. Read the chapters and learn your theories and you will do great. 2 assignments only, but the last one is 8-10 pages. I managed to write 22 pages and other students did too. I really recommend professor Crane. He is a great and funny teacher. I got an "A" in his class.I will take him next semester.
very exciting, loud teacher. makes his points very clear. he gives you study guides for his test kinda hard so have to study. he will proof read your 2 papers for you! good teacher and gets you engaged... but no phones!
cool nice guy. Learning alot !
Required Criminology class. Learned A LOT! He expects a lot from students. He really wants you to use critical thinking to really dig deep into a topic. Uses handouts, the book and lectures. Study guides before each test. Usually has 3-4 essays on tests but if you listen & take notes you will do great. He is high energy & gets you motivated
I loved Proffesor Crane! All his classes are so much fun. He always has awesome stories to things you can relate too. Class goes by so fast. One of my favorite teachers at RVC I highly recommend you take one of his classes. He's kind of a hard grader. But if you do his assignments, pay attention in class, and study for his exams you'll do good.
Professor Crane is a fantastic teacher. He really knows what he's talking about and he really wants his students to do well in his classes. His Intro to Sociology class was the only class on my schedule that I actually looked forward to going to. If you take good notes during lecture, and study for the exams, you will do swimmingly. Great teacher!!
I found Prof. Crane intimidating at first, but if you stick with his class, he's actually pretty nice. It's a hard class. Study hard, show up to class, and pay attention. He's a very knowledgeable man.
Professor Crane is tremendous! With the limited time we had (summer class) I seriously wish I had taken it during a fall or spring semester to take time understanding and utilizing the knowledge. Crane helps each student and will answer any question. He comes off a bit intimidating, but I guess that's his demeanor from a previous job. Take him!
Had him for criminology first thing in the morning. He'll wake you up, I promise that. He's knowledgeable, passionate about his subject, class discussions are great and thought-provoking. We even got to take a tour of the local jail! I will say that he writes VERY difficult tests- be prepared to study hard. But he's a fantastic teacher.
I had him last spring, and he made me think critcally like I have never done before. He really pushed me in that class and I admire him for not just focusing on the talkative ones.I'm usually quiet as a mouse but he really brought me out of my shell. Its not an easy class but it is absolutly worth it, I promise! By far my favorite proffesor ever.
He was my favorite proffesor. He will make you work for your grade. He is passionate about what he teaches and wants to help you understand. He gives great real life examples, and is just a joy to listen to. I wish I could reatake this class for fun!! Take Crane, you wont regret it! Totally worth it!
Take this Jerry Crane. He is intimidating at first, but dont let that scare you away. He is always willing to help you understand. I loved him, and would reccommend him to abybody. Hurry up though, his class fills up quick!
he is the best teacher i have ever had!!! i absolutly loved his class. he explains everything and makes it fun. im taking his criminolgy class next semester. TAKE HIM!
Good Prof
Very tough, but very good. I struggled because it is actual learning, not just regurgitation. If you really want to learn about sociology, take his class... I admire his love of sociology and the stories he tells. He's amusing, educated, and dedicated to his class subject. I'd take his class again, but I'd try to take in more notes.
Best teacher I have had so far. Makes you work for your grade but that's college. Take him! Pushes for you to succeed and loves his job
Good teacher, knows his stuff and is a great story teller. Very inviting classroom setting. Made 4 hours go by quickly!
Honestly the BEST teacher I have ever had. I wish I would have taken him for a semester instead of for 11 days. You have to work hard but its completely worth it. He keeps the class interesting with personal stories and loves what he does. I would take another class with him.
by far the most "grounded" prof I have had. Knows his stuff and wants the students to as well. Love him !
Jerry Crane is a great professor who wants the best for his students! He has a lot of experience and knows the material and has a passion for sociology! I highly recommend him!
APPEARS TOUGH BUT VERY ACCOMODATING !!!!! enjoying SO FAR !
Jerry crane is by the far the most amazing teacher I've ever had! I love his class and actually enjoy being there. Next semester will be my third class of his I've taken. He is passionate about what he does and if you take any of his classes you won't be disappointed. He earns an A++ Rock valley needs more teachers like him.
Crane was super intimidating at first but after a few weeks you get used to him and how he carries himself. I never studied for a test because he really makes sure you are understanding the material with his lectures, but if you miss class your loss. Overall, probably my favorite prof!
I thought Mr. Crane was very unfair and rude. I applied myself and did well in the class, however, he was extremely rude to me after I was up all night with my dying grandfather. I was nodding off and he made an ass out of me in front of everyone. Quick to judge people rather than look into the situation. I'd never take another class with him again
Tests are difficult. 2 long papers required - I never got them back. Much more difficult than other SOC 190 sections. Had to buy expensive book w access code that was never used. Nice guy.
enjoyed class. tough teacher but will work with you to do well.Very inviting to help if you ask ! Will take another .
He is a FANTASTIC teacher/person, but the class is very hard. If you don't take all the notes and study A LOT, his tests will be terrible for you. We had two big papers that were pretty hard. Wasted a lot of money on the book and access code and NEVER used it once. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Prof. Crane is an awesome teacher! He is hard, lots of work but very passionate about what he does!If you want an easy grade then no he is not for you.If you are serious about learning, highly recommend.
great guy, and greater prof. will teach why people do what they do !!!
Not an easy teacher, but I believe I couldn't have a better prof than Prof. Crane. I'm very thankful I took him.
Highly recommend this teacher, he is not easy but his method of teaching is amazing. He is great and always gets into the subject we are discussing. He is very interesting and you can tell he loves what he does. Good teacher thumps up, and very Funny!
Professional
Great guy. He shares stories from his adventurous life that correlate with class material, for our learning enjoyment. The tests and assignments aren't easy but worth getting into because it they teach you how to do research and have a world view. Crane is passionate, observant, genuine, smart and a pleasure to learn from. Highly recommend him.
Professor Crane is very passionate about sociology. His passion translates into fun exciting lectures. If you take good notes and attend class he won't hesitate to help you with whatever question you have. He is also a cool guy with a sense of humor so don't be afraid to crack a joke once in a while.
Prof. Crane is really really a great teacher. He really helped break me into college. My teachers in high school didn't prepare me at all but Crane really did. He's very challenging, but if you study for his tests and do your research for the papers, you'll be fine. Definitely not an easy A class. But it was a lot of fun to learn it all.
Excellent teacher, one of the best I've taken at RVC. I really enjoyed his lectures and makes me look at life a different way.
I felt that the class I took with him was extremely difficult. His tests are incredibly hard, and if you don't read the book, the highest grade you could get on the test is probably a B-. He was a pretty good teacher, but I felt like he was too sarcastic and didn't take other thoughts and possibilities as well as he should being a professor.
Jerry crane is by far the best teacher at RVC ! I loved his class so much I decided to take every class he had besides criminology which I plan to take next semester. The class is easy as long as you go to class, study, take notes and listen. He makes the class fun. But the tests will be challenging if you slack off. But you will learn so much!
He can be a tough grader, and essays on tests are difficult. He tends to write and talk in run-on sentences, so it's hard to see what he is actually saying. He is very passionate about Sociology and sometimes shares funny (and serious) stories that relate to the topic in class, although more times than not, it won't help in remembering the material
The ppl complaining about how hard he is probably thought this was a blow-off class. You HAVE to study. I studied for an hour before tests and always did well, he's a very fair grader. He may come off as "mean" but it's bc he doesn't tolerate ignorance and stupidity. If you say dumb things, he'll laugh and poke fun at you. He's great regardless.
Mr. Crane is a good guy, I currently have him right now for Soc 190. though even when I'm in class its difficult for me to understand him, He talks like an auctioneer for a car auction. very repetitious due to him always saying " you following me?" assasingments are long, and very specific. I do Admit he is a bit rude. but he's good.
He is a fantastic professor!! Don't take this class unless you want to learn the material. He expects you to participate and do the readings. I loved this class. By far my favorite but definitely had to work really hard. Subject material was very interesting
Fourth class of his! You either love him or not, he is very fair but tough! You are guaranteed to learn a lot if you participate in class!
Very intense teacher. He's very passionate about what he does, and can be hard to understand at first, but he gets you thinking. Four exams, multiple choice with essays (Elaborate!) plus two lengthy papers. He expects you to engage in class and conversation. He's tough, but a great guy and its an edifying class
Very interesting class, before taking his class, I had no interest whatsoever in sociology. His lectures are really interesting and definitely keeps you focused. It's not an easy class, but definitely worth taking.
Mr. Crane is a great teacher. He will teach you so much more than just sociology. He has a lot of interesting life stories and is a great guy. A few things to note is that you can not read his handwriting at all so good luck with your graded papers, and he also can talk pretty fast so you might have to request him to slow his roll.
AKA Jerry; definitely makes you work for your grade, but he's such a rewarding professor for it. You get the grade you deserve and getting a good one makes you feel SO accomplished. Go to class, take notes, pay attention, STUDY FOR THE EXAMS!!!!, and get your papers in early. Communicate with him and take his advice, and you'll get an A. Loved it.
Crane can come off as stong and demening, but once you get to know him he turns out be a pretty good professor. His grading isn't that tough, test aren't that hard. He is super interesting and has plenty of stories.
Liked this guy, Real, constructionistic, and will help you if you help yourself !
GREAT prof. Super smart. loves his job. Study for test (he gives a study guide), go to class.. a lot of test material comes from lectures, attendance matters. Reading the book helps but lectures and discussions are the meat of the class. i really enjoyed the lectures, it's an eyeopening class for sure. 2 big assignments, but he prepares you..
Professor Crane is passionate about his subject, that is for sure. His exams are not hard as long as you follow-along with and understand the lecture material. Reading helps, especially when it comes to writing your essays. There are not a lot of papers in his class, but the few that there are are quite large and require a good amount of research.
He's alright. If you show up to class and read the book you will be fine. There are two lengthy papers that you have to write, but it's nothing too difficult. A few quizzes here and there. Tests aren't too bad if you come prepared. He's a nice dude and will answer any questions and gladly help you out. However, don't expect to get an "easy A"
If you take his class serious and work for it, you will be fine, if you are lazy and wait until the last minute to write your papers do not take his class. If you don't understand something, talk to him. He will help people and work with people. I'd definitely take another class with him.
Professor Crane is very passionate about what he teaches and it's clear that he wants his classes to learn as much as possible. However, his tests can be very difficult because some of the questions are often not from his lectures or handouts and the papers can be difficult at times as well. He is still a great professor though.
You better have a masters degree in order to understand what he's talking about. He literally said for my 200 level class, that "this class could be taught in graduate school". He makes it so unnecessarily hard that its not even worth trying for. If you have to take him. Good luck.
He is honestly one of the best profs I have had. He takes his job and sociology seriously. He really is there to help, as long as you do the work you'll be fine. He is always open to answer questions. He keeps class interesting and makes sure you understand the material. 10/10 would recommend.
I took this class online and it was very easy. There was one assignment due a week, sometimes two, and they were due Sundays at 11:59. Test are on eagle and are about 75 questions, not really hard either. There is only a midterm and final for the class. The papers werent really that hard either. Just dont procrastinate and youll get an A!
Lecture, powerpoint and book. He's enjoyable. Some homework. Homework & attendance is a participation grade. 2 major assignments that he gives over a month to complete. 1st is easier, 2nd is tough (start when he gives you the assignment!!) Questions? See him during office hours, before/after class, dont message him. Know your stuff or you wont pass
Very good professor. Is very open-minded, knowledgeable, and professional. Do the work and study, it is simple. Overall, a great man to be teaching sociology.
his tests are heavy and extremely long
Hes very vocal and loves having conversations, hell work with you as long as you work with him, one of the best professors Ive had.
Professor Crane was a breath of fresh air. His lectures were intellectually stimulating and went into great depth-- I love how he covered controversial topics and welcomed various perspectives. In addition, his expectations were clearly communicated and fair. If you put in the work, you will receive the grade. I would recommend any of his classes!
The only experience I had with this professor was in the Summer session 1 class. He said multiple times that his regular Fall/Spring semester classes go more in depth and have more assignments. For Summer 1 he graded on a curve often and gave lots of extra credit. He said class was not mandatory but took attendance and gave grades based on it.
I had professor Crane for Soc 101 as well as Soc 292. Both classes were slightly challenging but not outrageously difficult. Professor Crane's teaching style got me through the more difficult material and kept the class interesting. I highly recommend taking professor Crane's class, you won't regret it!
Take Prof Crane if you havent already! His tests are hard but if you show up to class and listen then you should be fine. He is so charismatic and will make you love Sociology. I had him for this class and Intro and I couldnt recommend him more.
Professor Crane gave amazing intriguing lectures but he does make you work for your grade, there is homework assignments and his exams are quite lengthy. Youll definitely need to study! He does a couple really big research assignments as well so he definitely makes you do work for your grade.
If you have a busy life outside of class, I wouldn't recommend taking this course online as tests are only essay questions and you're basically writing a 7-10 page paper for the exams PLUS the 4-6 page papers for the assignments. I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, so idk how I even managed to get through this class.
He is always willing to meet with students to answer many questions. He does use the textbook and you will read a lot. However, he gives power-points which outline what to focus on. It is a difficult class, but definitely passable. Ask questions all the time and get feedback from him. He is super nice!
tests are more difficult than they should be
Honestly, Prof Crane made this class unnecessarily stressful. He was unreliable and never answered my questions. He was kind enough to give me an extension on some assignments, but didn't unlock them until the last minute and expected me to have everything finished for him to grade (after having a week). Felt I was graded unfairly.
Will not be taking his classes ever again, worst professor I have ever had. Terrible at giving clear coherent directions, barely responds, and my class was online, all he did was give a PowerPoint slide each week and assignments from the book. No online lectures, it was a joke, my high school teachers were better than this. World's worst professor
I took soc190 online. Most of the homework is based on papers. Several papers based on your ideas of different sociology topics and two longer papers, the most being 10 pages long. Mid term and final are tough tests with multiple choice, t/f and also writing portions. Still was able to get an A. Difficult to get him to respond to your emails.
Would say take Prof. Crane if you want a passionate / enthusiastic professor but willing to work for the grade. As long as you show up to lecture, read PowerPoints, and small sections of the books(he is not book heavy) you should be fine. 2 papers, 3 exams, 2-3 small homework assignments due every Sunday. He made sociology very interesting for me!
Hes a really good professor because you can tell hes so passionate in his work. His explanations are clear, his grading is hard but fair and overall you are challenged in this class but encouraged to keep trying. Hes a great teacher and Id highly recommend him again.
If you’re willing to put in the work, this class is great. Professor Crane is very passionate about what he teaches. He is super understanding. Although he has a good amount of homework, he is always fair and willing to work with students. Very fun and kind professor, definitely my favorite at RVC. Made the class super interesting!
Does not give clear instructions whatsoever. It is an extremely difficult and somewhat time consuming class especially if you have a job. On the papers I had to basically guess how to do them.
Professor Crane was by far my favorite professor I had. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and that truly shows in his assignments and lectures. This class wasn't easy and it really made you think. However, professor Crane made all of the material really interesting. He is a really great professor and always works with his students!
Professor Crane has some of the most entertaining lectures, and there is always good discussion in his class. There are 2 major research papers due over the course of the semester, but he gives you plenty of time and will proof read them as many times as you need. There are many little assignments due, but they are generally pretty easy.
Liked to talk about himself and applaud attractive students
