Jerome is hilarious for a Math professor, not quite sure if it's intentional. Attending his lectures isn't necessary for good marks, they're more for comprehension than applicability, but I would recommend them anyways. He's good at breaking concepts down in Layman's terms, and with hilarious analogies. The exams are difficult, study from the text.
He is very invested on getting students to pass and makes the class very accessible. His lectures are clear and useful, not recorded unfortunately, but worth going to.
Will not take his lecture again unless there's no other choice. He taught too slow and overelaborate the easy parts of the material that make you lost your patience. Though he seems a nice man and not a tough grader.
Fortier is alright at best. His lectures move at a very slow pace and seem to cover very basic examples that are not representative of the exam's questions. He's nice and occasionally funny but the lectures are quite boring. You could stop listening for 15 minutes in the lecture and will not have missed anything.
Literally don't understand why people hate on my boi Jerome so much. The algo to pass his class is really simple. Either you read the textbook and understand it, or you go to his office hours and tutorials (so helpful!!). Also, he's slow for a reason; 133 is an intro level linear algebra class.
Jerome is definitely a hilarious prof, but he is sometimes unable to explain the material clearly and often makes miscalculation.
Very nice prof. Would recommend.
I originally was supposed to take this course from Dr. Liangming Shen but due to his very strong accent, I could not understand the material that was being teached so started to sneak into his classes. He explains concepts really well and is very accessible outside of class, caring for students who come to his office hours and responds to emails.
Very nice guy. However, he was completely useless to me. I studied from the textbook (free online).
The guy is hilarious, but his class covers way too basic examples and it doesnt really help you solve problems from the book after. The problems on the exam are not really hard, except for his true/false questions, but there were way too many problems for the time we had to do the exam.
a fair final but this semester 141 and 133 were on the same day so writing 133 an hour and a half after 141 (he teaches both classes) was really a pain and more difficult than it shouldve been. however, major props to the guy! he just had a baby but still shows to teach his class at 8:30 in good spirit :) explanations can be a little more clear
He is a nice guy. Ok, but how is that going help me if I'm teaching the course for myself?? True/False questions in Algebra course??!!!! I passed MATH 133, but I don't feel I learned anything.
Has a unique sense of humor that me and a lot of other people found funny, so his lectures aren't boring. To do well in the course learn the theory and basic examples in class then go to the tutorials to learn how to apply that knowledge. Quizzes were easy, final was long (but not hard, a lot of annoying computations).
Being a hilarious professor does not mean anything to me. I'm not taking a course for fun!! I can have fun somewhere else. Linear algebra is important. Linear algebra must not be given as a cook course.
his lectures are boring but he is a good guy and accessible outside of the class, final was way harder than quizzes so be ready for that
Very nice professor.
Jerome has a funny tone and interacts with the class well. He gives easy examples for us during class to begin the application of just learned knowledge. He explains concepts well. Some people don't like him because they don't practice knowledge outside the class. Maths itself needs problem-solving rather than just listening to concepts. Practice!
Last fall I took linear algebra with Jerome. He is way better than some other sections' prof. He explains everything clearly and enthusiastically with humorous jokes. The linear algebra is abstract and complicated. Read the textbook for further explanation because Jerome usually just covers basic concepts and focuses more on problem-solving.
He is a hilarious teach at math340 and teach the material well even for a cs student that doesn't have much background in pure math. His exams can be easily passed if you did all the assignments.
Just clear and easiest way to teach math222 (cal3). It just works and it makes sense. No bs on proofs. No written assignments. Just webworks and exams.
He's just so clear and fair. Take him
He is fine. Compared to the other math profs at McGill definitely one of the better ones.
There isn't really anything bad to say about him. His exams are fair and reflect what is taught in class (plus minute applications). Quite passionate about math as well.
Good prof overall. His lectures are somewhat slow but very clear. His exams are very similar to past exams he posts on MyCourses. Easy A if you put a little work.
I love him! I am taking this class as an easy pass because I already took calculus in the past but all the details I never understood all of a sudden make sense. His online class notes are so so thorough and his lectures are a little bit slow but easy to listen to. He is so nice and has really gotten this class together despite the online format.
Handwriting is hard to read.
Prof Fortier has been incredible this semester. The online system has been tough on everyone, both teachers and students, but Prof Fortier managed to make his class interesting and, dare I say, fun. His attention to detail, in depth explanations, and humor made this class a pleasure to take.
He is a blast! I absolutely loved his lectures. He has a subtle humor and it's always fun. His attitude is very relax and accessible. He is a very reasonable person, I wish he was the one in charge of the class this semester as he was just teaching a group, another teacher was in charge. His lectures are simple, clear and efficient. Great teacher!
Honestly most of my learning is done by reading the textbook but I still attend his lectures only because he is really funny and he really cares for his students. I emailed him on a saturday a few days before finals and he responded within an hour so mad respect to him. He can be quite disorganised during lectures though.
He's a great professor with very thorough notes. His handwriting can be a bit hard to read from time to time. He can often take a long time to respond to emails though.
Nice prof but the class was a bit confusing. He's not always very clear, and the midterm was really hard. He really tries to make the class entertaining with his Pokemon jokes, though.
Jerome is a really good lecturer and he explains the material really well. In an online university format, I did not write a single page of notes - his notes are very clear, so I just downloaded his notes in pdf format. Fair exams. Friendly. At times he makes hilarious jokes. Recommend him!
Love this guy. Jerome Fortier was a great professor, and he had well-structured lectures and was great at explaining concepts. Sometimes his handwriting was hard to understand. His exams were also pretty easy and had a high class average. Not amazing at responding to emails quickly.
Pros: Amazing lecturer, good course design. Cons: Has a seemingly above standard case of science teacher apathy: Tried to alternate weekly teaching and lecture hours with the other prof, does quizzes over webwork and could be more compassionate in general. Probably will kill us on the final, but eh. Would still recommend.
Best lecturer I've had at McGill. Well-paced and enjoyable lectures with integrated practice and lots of fun examples. Amazing at answering student questions. Incredibly fair assignments and quizzes, but the final is difficult. 10/10 would recommend.
Prof. Fortier explains concepts slowly, which means you'll have time to understand the examples. His quizzes are very easy. He offers lots of office hours, but his explanation isn't usually that clear. Still he is a good professor. Would recommend. If you are taking 240 make sure to attend tutorials and read the textbook.
I took MATH222 online. Prof. Jerome is a good lecturer. He explained concepts clearly. And his notes were very clear. If you practice the questions from textbook and did the homework, you will get A easily.
He's really chill and pretty funny. Also really clear with directions and teaching in general.
One of my favorite math Professors in the whole department! Prof. Fortier really cares that his students learn the material and learn it well. This does mean difficult assessments, but if you do study and keep up with the work you will be fine. Learning from Prof. Fortier is worth any small hit to my GPA that may occur.
Hate calc, love Jerome. The midterm was painful, to say the least, and I honestly do not think I will do particularly well in this course. However, Jerome is a great prof and is very clear with his lectures. Although I will say that I do not feel any of the 141 profs truly prepared us for the exams.
Jerome is one of those profs that you hear legends about. He's not necessarily the most organized prof, but he's a super nice guy and genuinely seems like he wants us to learn. He explains things well, and gives reasonable examples. His exam was easier than people made it seem. Use the textbook to do practice problems, and the exams will be fine.
This course material is challenging; this is reflected in the grading scheme. While Prof Fortier may not be the most organized/straightforward teacher, he was the best lecturer for this course. He explains concepts, and his lectures were engaging. Make sure you pay attention! This course has so much material, but he does his best to fit it all in.
fine professor for such a packed course, but very unorganized especially with the separation of lectures with two other profs. Practice material is VERY easy compared to the actual midterm and final. You think you did well but then get humbled real quick. Concepts are weirdly explained so let youtube be your friend. Practice makes perfect.
amazing lectures, reasonable grading scale
He's so kind to give us a much simple final exam in person and help me curve to an A for my closing edge grade, I can't say more, he's really amazing.
Very fun lectures. He explains the content pretty clearly. Sometimes he doesn't cover everything so you need to do practice on your own but that's expected. The content can be hard but he tries to use examples to clarify it. Overall not too bad.
Jerome is such an interesting person, but I personally found his lectures were not that clear sometimes. midterm and final were not too difficult. The grading scheme is reasonable.
Great lectures
Exams are fair (if you studied and practiced and all), only really hard part were the proofs (which are hard everywhere). Lectures were very solid and could explain things very clearly! Funny dude overall, just a well-rounded prof.
Jerome Fortier is great, explains things well, tech-savvy, friendly, and funny. He likes to approach topics from proofs using variables which were very confusing to me. I wish he spent less time on proofs, but the example problems were really helpful.
His lectures were pretty straight to the point and he doesn't overcomplicate concepts/proofs like a lot of lecturers. The course in itself is more conceptual, intuitive and at times creative than it is computational and proof based. If you go over the notes and make a point of understanding core concepts, the class should be a breeze.
Great Prof, clear, accessible, logical, bref a great Math professor. But he had no business making Math 338: History of math this hard lol. Like all the other students I took it as an elective and it ended up being my hardest class... Would 100% have him as a prof again for a MATH course but would not take Math 338 again with him.
I had wanted to take MATH 338 for a while and took it with Jerome. He was awesome! Taught the material clearly while also engaging us with funny historical stories about math. Very knowledgable. I think some people took 338 thinking it would be a bird course and thus found it to be hard; however, I found assignments and quizzes to be very fair.
I took this as an elective because it was known to be easy/interesting. Turns out its not easy anymore (as an elective esp with 4 other classes). Assignments were challenging but very doable because he gives a ton of time. It was his first time and he did a great job but def don't take it thinking its an easy elective. I would def taking him again.
Fortier was my favourite out of the possible 141 professors I had in 2021: clear lectures, organized notes in myCourses, and entertaining asides and phrases. 141 is a demanding course for most first-years, but Fortier made the experience about as easy as a professor could for an online class. I will be seeking further math classes from him.
His notes and explanations were pretty good. There were 2 midterms, they were pretty fair and the final was really fair too. The only thing I had issues with is the fact that there was multiple choice on the final worth 40% which I personally hated but it wasn't that big of a deal. Would definitely still recommend him over most teachers.
The prof made vector calculus super interesting and showed lots of applications of what we learned. Notes were provided after the lectures. The midterms and final were extremely fair and represented the lecture material very well.
Decent professor who tries to make a relatively difficult class as palatable as possible. I personally didn't like his application-heavy lectures since he would often omit the fundamental theorems & explanations before jumping in to the applications. Exams are representative of class material, though the final was a curveball.
professor is a nice person, who teaches the class with great care and effort. all the things teach in class are useful and this really helps us to prepare for the mid and final. A great professor.
314 is a super interesting class and a great extension of ideas from vector calculus! Fortier's lectures were very informative and quite well-structured, though the topics definitely require time to get used to. The two midterms and final were very reasonable and were a good reflection of the content from homework. Fortier is a fun professor!
He is a very good prof, but do not take this class if you want an easy A. This ended up being my hardest class. Try to attend lectures and ask questions when you get lost, he's very happy to answer them. This course is also very interesting, but definitely not a bird course, it's quite intense. Put in the work, you will get an A, with some effort.
Prof. Jerome is a great guy, tries to make his lectures entertaining worth Pokemon jokes. He is pretty good at expelling concepts, however he covers extremely simple examples in class that are not reflective of the final exam or midterm.
Great prof
A very hilarious and caring one who always makes lecture very accessible (slow pace). Looking forward to take MATH240 with him!!
Explain very clearly! Excellent!
Great professor who makes an effort to make lectures fun by making jokes. Extremely fair assessments there are no surprises on either the midterms or final.
Jerome was wonderful. He made the lectures super engaging and I was so appreciative to have him, especially compared to the other Math140 professors. The final and midterm weren't breezes, but I think he did a great job teaching calculus.
Had the pleasure of being in Prof. Fortier's class this semester. He lectures were awesome, relatively clear with lots of examples. He tried to make each class interesting with his pokemon jokes. His midterm and final was by no means easy, but if you attend the lectures and do the textbook problems you should be fine!
Fantastic and engaging lectures. He teaches the material in a clear and understandable manner with plenty of examples that very rarely left me confused. I have no complaints.
Jerome has been my favourite instructor at McGill so far. He explains all concepts clearly and uses Pokemon to teach differentiation rules. He is a kind guy and very funny. Midterm and final were tough but doable, and were not very similar to the textbook questions.
MATH338 with Jerome was phenomenal. The class was well organized, fascinating, and its workload was very manageable. His lectures are compelling and hilarious (and relevant to assignments/quizzes). The assignments help you master the material, and the quizzes/exams are very fair.
He's just the goat.
Amazing prof! Super clear explanations, well organized and fair exams. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Jerome is a gifted math prof. He is able to explain every concept very clearly and mostly keeps to teaching evaluated concepts. He writes clearly on the board and gives you a lot of time before erasing. The WebWorks were very fair as well as the midterms and Final. Its clear that he wants his students to succeed based on his lectures and resources.
Jerome is the best! He is so funny and his lectures are easy to follow. The midterm definitely had some tricky questions but the final was extremely fair. He also curved generously which was very kind of him. Complete the assigned textbook work and you will be set. Definitely take his section!
Get a load of this guy
Jerome the GOAT!
The goat. Made a notoriously challenging class really digestible, and so enjoyable. Posts great notes, good suggested practice problems, super fair midterms and final, and rounded all grades up.
He's so fun, never a boring class. He made math240 my favourite. Best prof I've had at mcgill.
Best prof I've had, great lectures, SO funny too. Exams were super fair.
He makes lectures fun. The materials are quite difficult, but he does provide examples which make it interesting. Responsive to students' questions.
Really good teacher. Super accessible lectures and office hours. Very good at explaining concepts for the first time and lectures didn't feel rushed and overpacked.
Great lecturer and really engaging. I found the course very challenging, and I think many others did too, but he did curve the midterm to accommodate. I thought the final was really difficult but it was somewhat fair given the practice final he provided.
Good office hours
He's a nice person. His lectures can be quite messy tho. One good thing about him is that he always gives practice exercises that prepare you well for the exam, so make sure to do these.
Jerome is hilarious, I have so many pictures in my camera roll of the funny stuff he would draw in the lecture notes. He's a good prof too, always explaining tough concepts thoroughly. The only thing I will say is, even if you were good at math in high school, to really study for his exams. I would've done better in the class if I practiced more.
