His essay grading was too harsh. I never had higher than a C. *cry* However, he was a cool teacher. He made corny jokes at the beginning of every class. XD
Great teacher. Got an A in both classes. Some people don't like his grading, but he is a JEPET corrector and teaches directly towards the JEPET, which I passed. Also, he is always willing to give extra help, extremely organized and you always get out early.
those who didnt like him didnt work hard. i considered myself a strong writer, and i never got an A. He forced his students to work very hard to pass, but was extremely helpful and willing to work with you to get a better grade. A cool guy, monotonous class, but very nice.
Welcome to DORKSville. This guy is super dorky but excellent at what he does. Expect at least one bad joke at the begining of every class but also expect really good feedback on your papers. He's just critical enough to help you improve but wont hurt your feelings
all above comments are true except the one directly above this. YOU CANT WRITE! His feedback is top notch and the only reason I got a B was b/c I didnt read it. Very good teacher and gives you everything you need to earn an A. Unless of course you cant read or are being lazy (like me).
Schwab's teaching style is unique and effective. No other teacher has ever made me enjoy write essays as much as he has. You learn on your own, and you see the imporovement after every essay. Ask him to give essays back to you though :) I absolutely recommend Prof. Schwab for ENG 114 and 214.
This guy is horrible. Do not take him if you are planning on taking JEPET. He does not help at all. He spent a whole 30 minutes the whole semester preparing us for JEPET. I now understand why so many students at SFSU fail the test. It was a joke. If he ever teaches creative writing...I might then suggest taking him. Otherwise avoid him at all cost!
Schwab made me love writing, which I used to hate with all my heart. Homework isn't exhausting, and classes are refreshing and fun, and sometimes he even lets the students leave an hour early. He is a unique professor at State and you just have to take his classes to experience his different approach to an otherwise tedious subject.
Jerome Schwab has a really bad sense of humor which makes him funny. You'll find yourself laughing under your breath, all in the while learning to write a critical paper.
Yea, i don't know about this guy. He's an alright guy, i just don't think he that great of a teacher. The class goes through this routine of a paper due every week and then we correct them in class. I don't think i came out of the class with much, but oh well.
He starts class with a corny joke that you laugh at because it's corny. Doesn't teach much that you haven't learned in Eng114. Read the stories assigned, quizzes, student led discussions, rough draft, peer review, and then final drafts. Same cycle through the whole semester. He isn't too hard a grader, but write quality papers to get a good grade.
lots of writing (and reading) involved in ENG 114. read an article, write a rough draft, peer review, and then final draft. the cycle continues each week through the semester. as for grading, the papers i wrote in an hour even got B's. still, he's a knowledgeable guy about the university and really tries to prepare you for JEPET.
He is not an easy teacher. He expects alot and if you are not to his standards, well your scrwed. He tries but is not that good at being a Eng 114 professor. He seems like he should be in an advanced Eng 214 professor. I am so glad I never have to see that man again!!
Decent guy, but a horrible teacher. Expect too much from his students. Acts like it's a graduate class. And he doesn't help your really, just refers everyone to tutors. What a guy! Avoid if you can.
He is the greates. At first he appears as a tough guy, but deep under he is a caring teacher. He wants the best for his student. He gives his best and he expects the same in return from his students. I'm not saying that his class is easy, but it is not too difficult either if you do the neccessary work. On top of that, you may learn something besid
If you really want an A without working your ass off... find yourself another professor unless you're a gifted writer who loves to read and analyze. however, if you don't care about grades and you really want to polish your writing skills for JEPET, then take this guy. He's a nice guy, somewhat helpful, good readings, but a lot of work. good luck!
Schwab is a great professor. An essay is expected every two weeks, but one gathers enough adequate info to brainstorm on from the student-led discussions. You'll love Schwab if writing is one of your fortes. He seems like a wise veteran of his field, a professional and a jokester.
He's a difficult but humorous guy-likes to start each class off with a joke. The content is difficult to analyze sometimes but he will help you. Not an easy A or even B for that matter but he'll definitely prepare you for JEPET! His main focus is on how the JEPET is graded so be prepared. A bit harsh & confusing at times cuz the class takes effort.
Nice guy, but a very hard teacher. He has high expectation of his students, especially in a 414 class! He makes you write about 6 papers and they have to be near perfect to even get a B.
People in class complained about him sometimes but he would really friendly and helpful regardless of how you were doing and he always gave me good grades.
really tries to teach his students
Schwab was an awesome teacher. I was falling behind but he made sure that I was going to do well. The readings are pretty easy. He may at first seem strict but as you get to know him he's an GREAT teacher.
An amazing professor. Had him for a night class (which are always dreadful in my opinion) and he really made the class worth attending. He likes to start off with a joke to lighten up the atmosphere and is an all around chill guy. Easy grading if you go to every class and do what is required. Definitely a professor you will enjoy! =)
This guy is the best teacher i have ever had at SF state. He tells jokes and as long as you try to get a good grade, you'll get one. Go to his office hours he will tell you whats wrong with your paper and how to get a good grade. 5 essays. Nicest guy in the world, actually wants to help you. Really funny, intelligent, down to earth. Recommended dud
Five essays for one semester, plus group activity that is counted towards your grade and you have to participate to pass the class. He grades strictly on essays so don't be shocked when you get a C or a NC because he wants good writers to come out of 414.
Very nice, yes not an easy class so if you expect to pass with your Chinglish skills do not bother - better off NOT go to class at all. Great instructor, he will make sure you come out of his class much better writer compared to what you might be thinking. If you want an easy pass then CR/NR is probably better option for you. Thanks Jerome!
He is a great professor, dont get me wrong but make sure you do show up! If you don't you will not do well, and will not get credit for the course. He takes attendance, and the class is made up of 5 essays, quizzes at the begining of classes after a reading is assigned, and a group presentation. Take him you will get a lot out of it
Well, reading the review of others i seriously don't agree that as long as you go after a good grade you will get one ! The class is good but the teacher always points out mistakes even in your best essays . He grades very hard and mostly gives a "C". Even if you try hard you may barely manage to pass this class!
I never got what he said in the class even if i pay full attention to whatever he says. Guys, believe me, if you want to do good in this class be a talkative person. Talk to the professor about your personal life and he will be happy with you and give u good grades. he does not like quiet attentive students. Teaches for 10 mins in the whole class!
Schwab teaches for ONLY 10min/class and expects you to write with NO mistakes in order to get an A. I hardly had any mistakes on my final drafts, 100% attendence, 99% on exams, 100% participation and he still gave me an A-. His reading material is one-sided and he seems to grade you down if you disagree with his opinions. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
This teacher says "Attendance is necessary and you can take only one day off in this class"....but thats not with everyone. His favorite students always tell him some stupid problems and take days off. Almost half of the class was absent in the last few days of the semester. What da....!!! Attendance is mandatory if you are not his favorite. Useles
i really don't prefer him as a teacher. coming in as a freshman, i thought he would be helpful and actually read all of my essays before he gave them a low grade, but this was not the case. he tries to be funny but it's usually just irritating. he should definitely work on actually helping his freshman class instead of crushing them from the get go
He is a little old man. He tells bad jokes, but you laugh anyways. No final or midterm, and four essays all semester. No tardies, no texting, but you should take him.
Professor Schwab is one of those rare teachers who are genuinely interested and concerned about your education. I loved his class, he's a sweet, funny, nice man.
Talks the first ten minutes of class. I don't like his teaching style... That being he didn't teach. He'd tell you what's wrong and it was up to you how to correct it. Or get tutors. He loves sending people off to get tutored...
The worse English teacher ever. Doesn't teach the class and when he does it's for 10min and there are 4 essays and he doesn't give you the proper help so he sends you to a tutor instead of him telling you what he wants in the essay.
I cannot emphasize enough to stay away from this class. Even if there are no other available classes. You will not get anything out of a class with a teacher who knows nothing about English. There is no reasoning for his grades, they're mostly based off the JEPET, so don't think to write anything the least bit abstract.
Great teacher! The class is NOT easy and be prepared to work hard because you do have to write essays consecutively. BUT you do learn a lot. I think this is the most I've learned from an English class and it's very helpful especially before taking the JEPET. The class is organized so you know what's going to happen.
He is an AWFUL TEACHER. His grading doesn't make any sense. He easily gives out no credits without even trying to help you. HE IS AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL. He did not help my grade, he didn't help me learn. RUN AWAY FROM THIS CLASS... as fast as possible.
DON'T RECOMMEND HIM!!!!! His class is not that easy, but i really dont like his teaching style. He kind of just leaves you with the class to work. Not really a helpfull teacher, and is NOT clear in what he teaches.
He is no help at all, you think you're doing well in the class then you see a NC on your essay, and when you ask for help he, tells you to go to a tutor. Also, his textbook is an anthology written by him, so basically you have to agree with what the book says. DO NOT take him.
No help teacher who makes students do all the teaching. Never reads essays until final draft; by the time you know what he wants its too late. Marks you down for the smallest mistakes. One of my worst teachers ever.
Do not take this teacher even if he's the only one available unless you want to fail.
This teacher hasn't taught a single thing since the semester started and thinks we have all the time in the world to write boring essays.
Grades paper harshly, won't let the smallest mistake go. Alot of his marks seems personal preference. IF your bad with grammar, I don't recommend, he will tear your paper apart. Be honest, It's not really about writing a good essay that you see fit, but an essay that he's sees fit.
HORRIBLE teacher, one of the worst I have taken at state. He doesn't really help you with anything and grades things his own way. I DON"T recomend him at all. He doesn't teach you anything.
He has interesting discussions, and has a funny character. But when it comes to grading papers, it better be flawless, in terms of argument, grammar, sentence structure citations etc. Definitely not an easy class. Its not really about how much effort you put, but how well you understand his criteria.
Good, strong teacher at state. He knows how to keep things interesting while teaching us about English and social problems in the world. Loved it.
Horrible English teacher. His grading on papers is completely unfair. Every single class is outrageously boring to attend and he doesnt grade you on your effort, just if you can write like a proffesional writer.
Three absences and you fail. "Wrote" the book, made us buy it new. Super basic eng functions are all he teaches, stuff you should know by the time you get to college, so his class was boring. Horrid grader, admits to 'scanning' papers. Really cool guy, I believe that if he was teaching something he cared about he's be a great professor.
You read articles about a common topic and write essays. Be careful writing about subjects he doesn't agree with! But I didn't dread the class at all. You have to write 4 essays and do one group project which was extremely simple. You peer edit every other week. The book and mycomplab subscription were too expensive.
He was an alright teacher overall. The downside to the class is that he spends most of the free lecture time (when we weren't doing peer reviews) with somewhat useless writing techniques and grammar rules. He always seemed cheerful to be teaching. He's okay, but not super great for people who already understand how to write simple essays.
Just a bad teacher; his solution is English tutoring centre.3 tardies = 1 absense. Do not take this teacher even if you do not have enough classes. His grading is extremely hard and you have to agree with his philosophy.
Kind of a boring class, but he was very cheerful and had us write essays on interesting topics. He's very clear with his assignments and he always complimented my writing. He lets you rewrite papers if you want a better grade on them, too. He seems to like his job.
I really don't mind writing essays so I enjoyed this class and my writing improved A LOT. If you don't like writing I wouldn't recommend. I enjoyed this class a lot but know a lot of other students didn't. I was in the 3 hour night class and because its all discussion it flew by! You use the book and lecture guide for everything.
He was a good professor. Take him if you actually want to develop your writing skills. He is a tough grader, but if you at least try you will pass and if you need extra help he is more than willing to sit down with you. Almost every class is spent in discussion so that makes class pretty interesting if people actually talk.
Way more work than any other eng 214 class. The prompts to the essays i found incredibly boring. He also does not grade based on effort. Very strict on attendance. Class was also boring. Not impossibly hard but a lot of work. Avoid this class if you can.
Honestly one of my favorite classes taken at state. He managed to incorporate interesting social and political issues and ideas into our learning and writing. If you come to class and participate in the discussions and seek out help for your essays, you'll pass the class no problem. Improved my writing skills and learned a lot.
Mr. Schwab was the best teache rI ever had! He helps, he let's you re-write essays, and I learnd more in one semester with him than I have ever learned with 2 1/2 years at my JC. All you have to do if tell him if you are having difficulties and he is MORE THAN willing to work with you. Super smart, easy to talk to, and keeps evey class interesting.
Honestly, a great teacher. Really cares about his students. Really helped during office hours and clear with his suggestions. Grades a bit hard sometimes, but consistent. Recommend.
I was so pumped on before going to his class. Then bit by bit.. my interest in English lessened. He IS a nice, friendly, helpful teach. However the downside to his teaching is that he wants you to do everything by the book. He gets very technical and wants your essay written in a certain way. The essays are boring, the class is boring.
English had always been a favorite subject of mine until this class. My hatred for writing quickly escalated as the class progressed. Although he is very nice and really does care about his students, he likes things to be written very specifically and is a very difficult grader. I do NOT recommend.
This teacher assigns way too much. Every week there is an essay or a prep due. The essays have to be 1350 words long and the preps have to be 1500 words. There are about 30 people in the class and of the 10 I talked to after the first essay, only one had received a C. The rest got no credit.
English is my favorite class and I came into college expecting to be an English major. This class changed everything. The smallest mistakes will give you no credit on essays and there is an enormous amount of work.
The class seemed exactly like high school. You receive a lot of busy work that makes the class drag on. The assignments in the class are based on the textbook, theres no way to get around it. In my opinion he was overly nit picky when grading papers.
schwab was such a great professor! He had everyones best interest in mind and was always willing to help. His course consists of 3 essays and one revision of the a previous essay. Turn in everything on time and if you put some effort into it he will give you at least a B. Take him Ive heard of much worse.
Mr. Schwab was a pretty good teacher in my opinion. Yes, he was pretty repetitive throughout the year which got a little annoying but overall he is a cool guy who wants you to succeed. On the first 3 essays I got Bs but on the Final Portfolio essay I got a 100%. I might have been the exception but this class is easy if you put in the work.
He was very nice. As long as you did the work and put in effort, you can get an A. Very helpful even when you didn't ask for it. His class was straightforward. Always graded essays very quick (within a week).
Difficult class if you're not trying to become an english major. Defiantly try and take another prof if you want an A.
Schwab is such a sweet guy! He really wants you to do well in college and his door is always open. Only 3 essays and a revision of one. I got a D on my first paper and ended with an A. As long as you meat the word limit follow MLA and turn it in on time YOU WILL GET AN A! TAKE HIM. college english isn't supposed to be a walk in the park
Mr. Schwab had a difficult and sometimes made me feel bad about my writing. Even though I went to Carp tutoring and office hours I struggled to receive a decent grade on my essays. The book was expensive and was used for every essay. I love the fast pace of the class made time fly by. Good Luck though!
He was a pretty easy professor. There's about four essays you need to do for this class, but one of them is a revision. Also, he's very helpful when you need it! There's also a book you have to get and he uses it all the time. He's also super strict about attendance and use of electronic in class!
A great class! I already felt confident about my writing but I learned more and feel even more confident now. Yes you have to put your phone away and you have to come to class but class work is easy. A little bit of busy work but if you follow instructions and turn in everything on time you will get a good grade no doubt. Also very sweet guy!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He gives a ridiculous amount of busy work in the form of a "prep". This class will remind you of high school with strict attendance policies and pointless exercises. He will grade mechanics like citing correctly and not even touch on the content. I learned nothing more than how to cite correctly in this class.
Schwab is obviously really passionate, and it makes his class really enjoyable. Worked with feminist themes in the beginning and combined them with war stories. Assigned 4 papers, all 1350 words long. He's helpful and has tons of class discussion before each paper is assigned. This class is best taken after his ENG114 class, he references it a lot.
You really have to earn and work for your grade in this class. If you are not a strong writer, I would not recommend this class cause he is a tough grader, especially when it comes to essays. 3 Essays, a revision and busywork. As a prof. he is really passionate about what he teaches, and is really kind and wants you to improve as a writer.
Prof. Schwab was a great to have straight out of high school. 3, 1500 word papers. Last grade is an edited version of one of the 3 papers. These are the majority of your grade. He is passionate about what he is teaching and is good at it. I am taking again in ENG 214. Highly recommended.
Professor Schwab has very high standards for his students, but he is willing to help. His door is always open if you are struggling with an assignment. He wants you to come out of his class a better writer, I have seen my writing progress and would recommend him to anyone!
There is busy work in the class, but honestly it does help for the writing assignments. He's always willing to help with papers and to improve his student's writing. Very passionate about what he does as well, which makes the class enjoyable.
Prof Schwab is very nice and passionate about English. There are 3 1350 word essays as well as 1 1800 edited version of one of those essays. After reading each section of the (2) books (3 short stories) you have to submit a "prep" and then discuss it in class the next day. You also watch a movie at the end of the semester. Overall pretty easy class
Cool dude. Cut me a lot of slack when I was having family emergencies left and right. Genuinely cares for his students, likes the vocal ones. Technologically impaired. Be ready to help him connect to the TV in class, if there's one present.
Took his eng 114 class and he is very clear with homework and what's due for each class. Posts all hw way ahead of time so you know what's coming. Gives very good feedback on essays and all his assignments have helped me become a better writer. He is very repetitive in his teaching style, which I like and will be taking him again for next semester.
You read three sections from the book, for each section you write "preps"" which can be tedious but are actually really helpful when constructing your essay. After the preps is a 1350 word essay. 3 essays total, and at the end of semester you pic one to rewrite/add 350 words too. Easy class if you do the work.
At first I wasn't sure if I would like Professor Schwab, but I ended up really benefiting from his class and my writing definitely improved. He wants to know what the students are thinking and he really cares about everyone. Though I think we printed out way too many papers than we should have, I would recommend!
Prior to College english classes were my least favorite, but Professor Schwab changed that for me. This course is one that doesn't feel stressful, but one where when you finish the course, you look back at where you started off with you're writing, and realize that you actually improved a lot. This class is an A as long as you just do your work.
One of the best professors at SFSU! Super kind & respectful! Truly wants you to succeed & wants the best for you. Be ready to print a lot of worksheets which can be tedious at times but overall do your work & youll pass the class with the grade that you want!
I was pretty scared to take his class because of all the mixed reviews, but I am really glad I did because it benefited me a lot. If youre looking for a class that requires minimal work then this one may not be the one for you. Overall, if you do your work its an easy A!
I thought he was very nice! Honestly, one of my least stressful courses were with this professor. He had a couple essays but not a lot and he gives great feedback. I wrote nonmandatory for courses but that the participation matters, because you don't have to show up but he has participation points for in class discussion.
