Dr. Burns is FABULOUS!!! he knows what he is talking about and he is very clear... he makes sure the whole class understand and very often give curves... he also gives extra credit if we fill out stuff for his 10 year old son...great teacher dont take anyone else!!!!!!!! make sure you get a good lab teacher thou ....
I have nothing bad to say about this teacher. he is wonderful!!
Dr. Burns is an awesome teacher. I nearly failed chemistry in high school, but after taking his courses I had a very good understanding of the subject. I'm now a senior Chemistry major @ ETSU and have yet to have a more thorough and fair professor than Dr. Burns. Take his class if you get the opportunity for sure!
Very good teacher. I have had my share of bad ones, and he is by far one of my favorite teachers. He is very understanding and gives a very through explaination of all of the topics. His tests do seem to be challenging, but they are manageable.
I had him for lab! theres no way i would have passed without him! hes very helpful and understands that chemistry is not natural for everyone!! Hes one of the best lab professors ive ever had
Excellent teacher! Had for both Chem 1110 and 1120. I had always liked Chemistry before, but he really created my intense love for the subject. By far my favorite teacher of all times (and I've had many). You can tell he really knows what he's talking about and he loves what he does. Very helpful and nice if you ever have questions. Loved him!
I really enjoyed his class. One of the best teachers, he will help you by finding what you are having a problem with and then help you correct it.
Incredible good at figuring out what I did wrong and fixing it. Puts thing in simple terms. Never had a better teacher who loves to inspire love for the subject.
Burns is awesome! Take chemistry with him!
Goes out of his way to insure you are prepared. Very approachable, office hours are when he is most able to address individual difficulties. Will answer any question and is immensely helpful. Best teacher for this course at Pelli. Awesome online content available for all chapters. Lab or lecture this is the instructor you want. Great Teacher!!!!!!!
Great teacher! very willing to help!
My favorite professor at Pellissippi and one of the best I've ever had. Helpful, kind -- really wants students to learn. You must study for his exams -- they aren't easy, but he provides a ton on study materials to help you out.
Excellent!
He is a very helpful, wonderful chemistry teacher. I made a C in the class, but if it wasnt for him it could have been alot worse. Chem is hard but he helped make it more tollerable. I definitely recommend his class.
Absolutely wonderful teacher. It is not easy but if you study and come to class you will pass. He explains things as clearly as possible and as many times as is necessary.
Dr. Burns is a GREAT teacher. He clearly articulates Chemistry to his students and is always ready to answer questions. VERY HELPFUL, I would highly recommend him for a Chemistry teacher. (his only flaw is that he is an Alabama fan lol)
Very good teacher. You better show up and study!!! You are going to learn Chemistry one way or another with him. His class is the one you want. I have had Ms. Morris and dropped look at her ratings and you will know Y he helped me so much when i needed it. Very easy, nice, and fun guy to be around. If you take chem this who you want to deal with.
Made lab interesting and was very helpful in figuring out what was wrong with calculations.
After having my fair share of terrible professors Burns is a godsend. He's very clear during lecture and extremely helpful during office hours which I recommend seeing him if you have problems. Chem is a hard class and Burns does a great job teaching it.
Not only is Dr. Burns one of the best professors I've ever had, he is also a good person. He is selfless and caring, which is not easy to find in people these days. If you have a choice, Dr. Burns is always the best one.
The only classes he ever teaches is Chem 1 and 2. Wish he taught others. He is the one to take for your chem sequence.
One of the best teachers I have ever had PERIOD!! I would highly recommend Dr. Burns. I was told I could never learn Chemistry by former teachers and I have have an A in his class and I actually understand it!
Best professor I had in college. I hated chemistry in H.S. but ended up majoring in CHEM after having Dr. Burns actually EXPLAIN concepts unlike past instructors. Definitely go to lecture though. The test info is in the textbook, but if you miss his clear and thorough lectures it defeats the whole purpose of taking his class.
Very knowledgeable about chemistry. Helpful if you do not understand something. You have to attend every class because his lectures and very detailed and contain examples that are like the ones on the test.
Dr. Burns is awesome, really explains things and wants to help!!
Lots of study material, previous tests and keys for study guides.
This professor will do anything to help his students. After taking his class, we kept in touch, and when I told him about a project of my own, he offered to help. We even set up a class for credit to pay for materials. When I told him I might not be able to pay for the class, he offered to pay so that I could work on my "baby" as he called it.
I love this man. He is a wonderful teacher, one of the best I've ever had. I would recommend him to anyone.
He is an absolutely amazing teacher. More helpful than any professor I have ever had. Will do anything to help you learn. Tons of study material. Funny. You should definitely take him if you can.
Dr. Burns was an amazing teacher. Extremely clear and precise, super about giving back tests in a timely manner. Gave cool extra credit assignments. Perfect teacher for chemistry.
Dr. Burns is the man. I was not looking forward to chemistry coming into the class, and now it's my major. This guy is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He made the material clear, worked through any problem you had, spelled out what you need to study, didn't assign very much homework, provides extra credit. All around great teacher!
Words cannot describe how amazing this teacher is. Has tons of study material to help with tests. His tests aren't easy, but he is so good at teaching that it doesn't matter. Anyone could learn chemistry from this professor. By far my favorite I've ever had. He will do whatever it takes to help you get the grade you want.
I took Dr. Burns for Chemistry I lec and he definitely knew his Chemistry stuff. The problem most of the class had was he was too smart in Chemistry and didn't put anything out of Chemist form. He showed no short cuts everything was the long about way. He is great just too smart to teach half of our class.
I was not looking forward to taking chemistry, but Dr. Burns somehow made the subject interesting. Go to class, that's it! He will explain anything if you have questions. Listen to what he says because he does not get off topic. He gives very clear instructions, so pay attention and do what he says, and you can get an A.
Dr. Burns is a great teacher! Always willing to answer questions and help. He provides you with a lot of material (old tests, practice problems, & supplemental worksheets) This is a very challenging class and requires attendance, practice & critical thinking (not memorization!) He offers extra credit for those of us who are not chemistry minded. ;)
Dr. Burns is awesome! Highly recommend his class. Clear, concise and super easy to understand during lecture. Tests are golden if you prepare with his practice exams. First Round of chemistry with other teachers and none of the material made sense or continued through until Dr. Burns. Didn't even crack the book. Got med school grades.
Very cool professor! Offers plenty of extra credit and gives out excellent notes and test reviews, which are harder than the actual test and prepare you well. His lectures are great. Very clear delivery of the material with enthusiasm and the occasional corny (and actually quite funny) joke. Don't pass up the opportunity to be in his class!
Hes really considerate with his teaching methods. Very clear about what he expects and gives good explanations. He gives partial lecture outlines to fill out during lecture that are wonderful to study with. One of the hardest classes so far, but one of the best teachers. He is a nice guy.
Greatest professor to grace the world of chemistry students. His tests are hard, but they account for good of a professor he is. LEARN FROM HIM!! it will help in future chem classes
Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. Had it not been for him teaching my Chemistry 1110 class I probably wouldn't have made an A. He gives great feedback and is super laid back and easy to understand! I would recommend him to anyone! I can't wait to take his 1120 class!
This class is definitely one of the most hardest and intensive i have ever taken. But having the SI Matt Moates was my lifesaver! He helped us all study and understand everything. Burns is very understanding and if you show effort, he will reward you.
Great teacher. Always going in detail if you don't understand. Uses repetition in lectures to help you remember. His test aren't difficult if you study and practice his study pack. Overall, I would take his class again.
Dr. Burns is a very nice man. He teaches at a comfortable rate. He seems to care about students. He likes doing Labs, but expects a detailed Lab Report, he might give extra credit.
HE'S THE BEST
Let me begin by saying Dr. Burns is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His teaching style is entertaining and very clear. He only teaches what you're required to know. Don't need the book. Go to every class and take notes. The material isn't easy and his tests are long but if you show effort he will reward you. Extra credit is offered
Dr. Burns is awesome. He gave us five tests and as long you look at the study guide, you will be fine. If you don't take him, you will regret it.
I took Chem 1 & 2 form Dr. Burns, and it was fabulous!!! I though chemistry would go way over my head, but whenever I asked any questions in class or out, he was very patient and willing to help me. He explains the material in such an easy to understand way, I think anybody would be able to completely understand chemistry after taking his class.
He is the best professor I ever had. 10 hrs Volunteering work for 100 points and tons of extra credit.
Dr. Burns is a great professor. His lectures are extremely clear and informative. He always pauses and asks if anyone in the class has question. He makes a difficult subject like chemistry much easier because of his easy-to-understand explanations and lectures.
He gives extra credit DO IT. For the Fall semester, he gave you a choice of earning 100 points by either volunteering and writing a paper about it or doing 50 online quizzes. Don't put them off until the last minute and if you choose the quizzes, make sure you keep a notebook with all the answers. Do ALL the D2L practice assignments.
He was a great professor. He especially helped students prepare for the big national chemistry test that you have to take at the end of Chem 2
I attended professor Burns classes for Chemistry I and II. He is one of the best teachers I have had throughout my 12 years in and out of numerous colleges. He is a teacher who truly knows his subject and wants you succeed not only in his class but in life. No question is looked down on and my experience with his TAs has been just as terrific.
Dr. Burns is an amazing communicator. His lectures are VERY clear and he always pauses to ask if anyone has a question. His enthusiasm for chemistry is very evident. He bases the majority of a person's grade on four of the five exams and a comprehensive final. Also, he offers partial credit and is very fair.
I had Pr Burns for Chem lab and I absolutely loved it. He was always extremely helpful when we need help and explained everything well.
I had Dr. Burns for CHEM 1020 lab. He works well with his students and grades pretty easily. I did much better and understood the lab much more than in CHEM 1010 different professor.
Best chemistry professor I've ever had! Chemistry takes a lot of work to do well but if you do the practice problems and the practice exams he posts online you'll be fine!! I got an A on every test. He always pauses to ask for questions and if you go to his office he will sit with you until you understand it, he is seriously the best!!
Go to lecture, do the practice problems, and attend reviews and your set to pass. Burns will make you enjoy Chemistry! Best instructor I've had at Pellissippi and UT. Must take it you can!
Dr. Burns is great; however, in 1120, our final is a cumulative final from 1110 and 1120 and we were not told about it until a 1-2 weeks before hand. The final looked foreign and everyone was a nervous wreck after taking it. I had an A before taking it and ended up with a C+ in the class.
Best chemistry professor I've ever had. I had Dr. Burns for Chem 1110 lab and his lectures were clear and concise. Excellent at breaking material down if you don't quite understand something, and is patient and enthusiastic about helping you learn.
THIS GUY IS THE BOMB!!! literally the best money could buy
I LOVE Dr. B! Took him for Chem I & II. He's by far one of my favorite professors in my college career. He lectures on everything you need to know and tests on that exact material. Gives plenty of study material and extra credit. He always has great feedback and answers any questions at any time. Get his lab as well if you can! I highly recommend!
Dr. Burns is an excellent teacher. He offers so many resources to help you study throughout the semester and plenty of practice tests. He also offers a lot of extra credit that really made a difference between a B and an A for me. He is easy to reach outside of class for extra help if you need it. Hes great!!
I began my college career hating Chemistry. After taking Dr. Burn's class I transferred to UT and am currently a Chemistry Major. Clearly has a passion for chemistry, teaching, and his students. One of the best professors I have ever had.
One of my favorite professors, he is very nice and honestly cares that you understand the material. This class is difficult so do not expect to get it in class, you have to do all the work he assigns online for additional practice. This class moves fast, so show up!
From the very beginning this class was difficult. He gave an example or two and that was all. He was impossible to keep up with during lectures.
He's a pretty nice guy, but he is hard to follow. I had a lot of trouble reading his handwriting, which to me is a huge problem. If you are writing on a whiteboard then write legibly! Same goes for the study packs, so many times I had trouble figuring out how he got an answer because of his terrible handwriting. He should improve his communication
Dr. Burns is a good solid professor. His tests are tough, but he does have empathy and will have a dialogue with you. He is hard to read, but is amusing at times. It is a very difficult class but it is passable. Compared to the other professors that usually teach Chem 2 he is the best. The lectures can be dry and confusing, but he gets the job done
Not my favorite class his tests were real hard. The corona stuff messed stuff up and class wasn't that great. Final was terrible bc he posts a ton of study guides and then the test wasn't like them. People like him since he's funny, but he's not a good teacher
Dr. Burns's lectures is a bit boring but he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. His lectures are very organized. He really cares that you understand the materials. When classes got moved online, he posted lecture videos and did zoom meetings, and they are very organizing. His tests are hard so make sure you study before taking it. Take him!
I had Dr. Burns online due to COVID-19, lectures were presented via zoom and a document camera and were available to download after class. He steps through examples clearly and slowly and keys you up for other difficult problems. Tests are directly related to what he teaches. Very knowledge, great professor and would recommend.
I took chem 1 twice. The first time I took it with prof Morris and I was absolutely miserable. I took this class with prof Burns and it was like night and day. He is the best! He actually cares for his students and wants you to do well! I cannot say that for any of the other chem professors.
I took the online class (thanks covid) and it was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Do not take this class. There were 10 tests! Also you have like no time to complete everything. I emailed him ten times before I got a reply! so unprofessional. Do yourself a favor and do not take this class with him.
his lectures were long and not very helpful. I met with tutors all the time to make sense of his notes (they were all over the place) also his tests were impossible.
I had a very hard time reading his notes. He even skipped like half of the problems on his notes so you only had one example on how to do a certain problem. There were so many tests! Good luck answering all the questions on them. I think the tests were 25 mins and one had 30 problems. It was so hard
I had him for lab and lecture and he is a funny and great professor. i will say this class is hard!!! so be prepared to study outside of class if you want a good grade. Overall great professor and would recommend!!
Second class with Dr. Burns and he delivered again. Lectures recorded and available for viewing before the tests are a real bonus. Homework assigned is harder than test material. Testing can bit a little hit or miss depending on the question set you get but generally is what he covered explicitly. Cares about students and wants them to do well.
Dr. Burns is a great teacher. He is very organized, offers a ton of extra credit at the end, and is always available to talk to outside of class. The final will count for a good chunk of your grade so keep your grades up on the tests and in-lab so you won't need a ridiculously high score on the final. I highly recommend taking his class.
I took this even though I am a student at UT based on the recommendation of a friend. This is a great course to actually learn the material instead of just struggling to pass a class. Dr. Burns is an amazing individual, and I would definitely recommend this class.
Dr. Burns was an incredible professor! He is extremely intelligent and gives easy-to-understand and comprehensive lectures. In addition to his intelligence, he genuinely cares about your success and is a hilarious guy. Though his class was quite difficult, I would highly recommend Dr. Burns. Make sure to do the extra credit you will need it!
He is probably the best chemistry teacher ive ever had. I took him during a 4 week summer session so there was a ton of material covered in a short amount of time. He responded to all my emails so quickly and truly helps his students who make an effort. His exams were straight foward and easier than the online homework in my opinion.
Dr. Burns is amazing! His notes include everything and have extra problems to practice. Lectures are interesting and the tests are difficult but look at the notes and go to tutoring and you'll be fine. Do not leave your homework until the last minute!
Dr. Burns is an awesome teacher! There were many times I had to email questions and he would immediately respond with help. YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURE. Homework is relatively easy as long as you pay attention. Study hard for the tests and you should be fine.
I loved his class, and am taking Chem II with Dr. Burns also. There are packets he gives out and teaches with that clearly show what you need to know for the test. If you miss a day you will struggle, but the class isn't bad if you put in the work.
His lectures are pretty thorough and has the notes posted online for students to print out and fill out during lectures. There are 5 exams worth 100 points and the final is worth 200. There are also 3 discussion posts and 2 research-related projects that are somewhat easy. Plenty of homework problems to do but they're well connected to the exams.
He is an amazing professor who made a subject I am not fond of extremely interesting. He is very easy to understand, very patient, and well spoken. He is by far the best professor that I have had for any chemistry course.
Loved him! Great professor and doesn't just teach off of a slide! He'll give notes handcrafted by him that guide you through what's over the exams. Study guides are almost an exact match to the actual exam. He wants all of his students to pass and he gives out a lot of extra credit!
burns is alright. not the best but also not the worse. He does give partial credit on the test but they are hard. Their is a review before each test but he will change a lot of things. Go over notes not just the review and you should pass. Chemistry overall is a hard topic.
Dr. Burns cares about the success of his students and explains topics in a way that is easy to understand. I took Chem 2 at UT and then at Pellissippi, and I would take it with Dr. Burns 10 times over before at UT again. The class was enjoyable and he was willing to help if I wasn't understanding something.
Great professor, but could side gig for reading sleep stories- His voice is so calm it can be hard to stay focused, but a great professor who is very accessible. There is a lot of homework on an app and some you can do wherever, but others your still need a calculator and scratch paper. Takes a lot of time and I wish it were on paper.
i enjoyed this class. I go to UTK but decided to take chem 1 here since our department is bad. he is very caring and is always willing to help. i would highly recommend him!
i really enjoyed this class and professor! he was very helpful and always willing to help!
Dr. Burns is an exceptional instructor, good at laying things out in a way that people who aren't good at chemistry can understand. Much better than some of the other chemistry professors here! Gives extra credit and is willing to answer any question that you ask! Definitely recommend this one! I'm retaking him for CHEM1120, too!
If it wasn't for professor Burns, I would never have passed general chemistry 2. I walked into this class without understanding much of general chemistry 1 but he made chemistry 2 much easier to comprehend. If I was able to dedicate more time to the class, I would have easily gotten an A thanks to prof. Burns.
