He has an extremely thick Chinese accent with "n" that sounds like "unh" because it's not prounounced the same way in English. His "r"s sound like "w"s too. If you can get past that, he's very thorough and teaches efficiently with helpful reviews at the beginning of class. He teaches fairly well for a new and bilingual professer/doctor of math :)
This is a first year teacher, and although I can keep up with him many others can't because of his teaching methods. I personally gave him advice on his methods and he's changed them according what I suggested. He's a really cool guy but his wording on problems is occasionally incorrect. I'm sure he'll get used to them though.
He maybe a really nice guy but i wouldnt suggest taking him... not very clear and if you do not have a good understand with math he is not the professor to take. Too hard to understand and teaches straight from the text.. i wasnt happy
got helpful towards the midpoint of the semester i'm in the middle now(it's end of october). if you bug him he'll *attempt* to answer a question in a bit of a chinese accent that to his credit is improving. surprisingly he will crack a pretty dumb joke that gets a laught but he can pull it off to lighten things up. ladies he's dead sexy take him!!!
This guy is horrible. He can not speak english very well. His "r"'s sound like "w"'s. He's very contradicting. Who gives essays for math anyway? He never checks homework or goes over test. If you ask him a question about something on the calculator, like how to do it, he says you need to make an appointment with him. His form of teaching BITES!!
well. if you want a good laugh- he can hardly talk right. he cant pronounce his r's.. he says ah's. i was absent 7 times and he hasnt dropped me, so i guess i like him. homework- he doesnt check, the tests are fairly easy, and hopefully u have access to a computer because you have to print out all his lecture notes. =x
um, heh, he's kind of a weird teacher. he has a very heavy chinese accent which makes it harder to understand. i will say tho...i'm like the worlds worst math student, and even with his accent, i'm still pulling a C+ will be a B when he averages in the essay. he gives an essay...easy i guess, but HUH?! who the heck does that? nice enough.
yeah he sucks. i cant stand him. lol. he has a heavy accent and i dont like him. he makes things harder. and so much more complicated. ugh i wish i got out of the class when i had the chance. ughh
He has a chineese accent do not take this class. even though he does let u bring a cheat sheet and gives you points on test questions even if you have like one step of the work. But the accent makes class time drag on and makes you get pissed off cause its simple work that is made more difficlut
HORRIBLE class. Horrible teacher. Explains things to the point where you have NO clue what the answer is or how he got to that point. Very weird, sings some words, randomly breaks into songs and TRIES to act hip making rap refernces. Accent is very hard to understand. Take him if you are good at math and can do the class on your own, he is not of m
Easiest math class that I've taken in college, if you can get past his accent, he really is a good math teacher, besides it is still his first year.
If you aren't great at math,I wouldn't suggest him.You can't really ask him questions,b/c the way he explains things is very confusing. If a problem could be done 2 different ways, he does the 8 step way instead of 2 steps. He does give bonus points for h.w.,but he barely gives you anything if you try and get it wrong.I will never take him again.
It is very hard to understand this teacher.he only grades you on the test but he moves so fast and when you ask questions he gets confusing. If your not good in math i do not recommend this teacher.
Some people are a little too hard on the guy. He does have an accent which can get in the way sometimes but he really knows his stuff. He will stop the lesson to help you if you don't understand. Don't be hard headed, I was never a very good math student but he gave me an A. Don't judge a book by it's cover. He may suprise you!
Do Not take this teacher! im generally pretty good in math, and i saw his bad reviews and just ignored it, but let me tell u, HE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!!
DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER, HE IS WAY TO HARD TO UNDERSTAND, AND THEN HE GOES OFF TOPIC, DOESNT CARE ABOUT GRADES AT ALL, TERRIBLE CLASS ALL THE WAY AROUND
I honestly didn't have a problem with Chen. He's such a nice man and yes he can be hard to understand at times but I don't really think it gets in the way of his teaching. He really tries to make everyone understand it's just comes down to how much you care. Im taking him next semester for stats.
Yes he does have an accent and it will take a couple of days to get used to. But he is really nice and funny. He is willing to help if you need it. You do need to study but he let's you use a post it for each test written with notes on it. I am taking him again next semester!
I had to withdraw from statistics last semester because I was failing even with a extra help-so I went into this class already dreading it but I ended up getting a B. Chen is VERY helpful, gives extra credit and will work with the class to be fair. He really wants people to do well!
He is a very good teacher. You have to get used to his accent but it isn't that hard to understand. He lets you write down formulas and bring them to class with you for the tests! He also takes the time to make sure everyone understands the material. I would recommend him.
I think he is a good teacher. I understood his lesson plans and it was great to be able to use a post it for the test. He was available if you needed help and made an effort with the students. I'm not the best at math but I did really good in his class. The people that complained about him in my class weren't listening and too busy talking.
This was my second time taking him. I did really well in Stats but terrible here. I think his teaching really thrives in Stats, I would not recommend him for Algebra 2. He only counts tests and not homework.
horrible puts you to sleeprun go into his class.
I had him for MA22, Survey of Contemporary Mathematical Topics..I was NEVER good in math, but he gets everyone to understand it. He's funny too!
I took him for stats. If you dont understand him the first time he teachers you something you will not get it at all. Hes not good at explaning anything. He is not good at explaning himself. Has a very thick chinese accent. Goodluck with it!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND CHINESE. he is a terrible teacher and cant let you do any problems on your own. its difficult to comprehend his words so if you have trouble to begin with, dont take him/
always had trouble with sequential II, but passed this class due to his teaching and generosity at grading papers. always gave partial credit even if answers were wrong. never gave mandatory homework, only extra credit homework towards exams. as if he was just giving away grades! reccomended. ps: if you cant understand him get your ears cleaned!!
by the way, i was also late every single day to class. still did not affect my final grade, which to my suprise was a B. once again, reccomended.
I thought he was great. Gave you so many chances to make up for bad grades. Gave very little homework.
great teacher.....relates movies to math problems which makes it kinda funny, gives lotsss of chances to make up bad grades and cares about attendance but wont fail u if u have 3 or 4 IF you talk to him, would reccomend
Hes kinda funny at times.. makes fun of people! His accent is a little strong but you can defiently understand him. The class was really easy and made sure you retook all the tests you bombed! i highly reccomend this class
He's difficult to understand because of his accent, but he's a nice enough guy. If you don't go over something in class he doesn't expect you to know it or learn in a hurry for a test. Fair grader.
Professor Chen is great! He has a strong accent, but he is very reliable and helpful. If you are willing to try, he is there to guide you through your faults. Attendance is not mandatory, I dont think it has affected anyones grades. He cracks jokes all the time, I recommend him he's a great professor
What a great Professor Dr. Chen is, slightly hard to understand on the first day but after that it's as smooth as ice, he makes class extremely enjoyable to attend and jokes around often, his material is straight forward easy to understand and if you need help he's prompt to answer his emails and always willing to help prior or after class A+++ KM
Great professor. I loved this class... Dry sense of humor..
Was a nice enough guy all semester, failed me because i was sick during the final from being in surgery the day before. i had a B before the final. wasn't very fair, i feel like he needs some help with comprehension of certain ideas. Homeworks all online, no textbook use, but you need to buy a $100 CD lol.
very easy class. material is easy to understand. hes very nice. his accent is strong, but you can still understand him. sometimes hes funny and other times his jokes are kinda corny. good professor
Hes a good guy. Hes a good professor. Accent may seen strong at first but your used to it by 20 minutes into the first class. Anyone here that complains about his accent is just an idiot. Pretty simple class as well. Don't bother buying the textbook, you don't need it. Hes a funny guy too. Like I said before, good guy.
this guy is not good. even though he teaches the subject well, he gives out a lot of homework which are time consuming and in the end you get less time to study for these tests if its in the summer. his tests are bad. dont take him
he sucks. honestly if you ask him a question he doesn't give you a straight up response he always works around it. i dont advise it him if you are looking to get a decent grade.
although he is a little tough to understand, he is a great teacher overall, plenty of tricks to understand how to do a problem and he never uses the textbook, he doesnt find it mandatory for you to attend class if you dont want to.
my math professor is nice and good to understand than last session
he is good
nice guy i enjoyed his class. he has a sense of humor and wants you to get a god grade. i think he is fair in his grading.
Professor Chen is a wonderful Professor.. He really wants everyone to get it. He is very patient and if you e-mail him he gets right back to you. I totally recommend him. He is also funny..
He is overall a good prof. He teaches you what you need to know and gives you plenty of time to learn it. Tests are fair for the most part. He's a nice guy and makes jokes once and awhile. There's no reason anyone should fail if you try.
Overall prof. chen is a great teacher, he wants you to do good and gives you plenty of time to learn before the test. He's not hard to understand after the first class & he explained things well. He's also really funny & tries to make class fun whenever he can
Yes he has an accent, but you honestly do get used to it. If you needed help he was there.
demeaning and indirect. whenever we asked a question he could talk for ten+ minutes and we'd still not have an answer. all hw is done online which is expected and its not a bad website. but unless you are just naturally good in math, s t a y-a w a y!
Funny guy but moves through the material very quick. Homework is online only, mandatory, has a deadline, and is grade. Lots of slides you need to print out. In Calculus I he skipped steps making it hard to follow. Mandatory Attendance.
He's not the best at explaining concepts, but he's very willing to help students if you ask for it, and has a few opportunities for extra credit.
Great guy. He's funny and polite. You'll get used to his strong Chinese accent, it's not bad at all. He explains things very well, just pay good attention. He makes sure everyone grasps the concept of what he's teaching by doing one or two examples for a topic that might be confusing. His tests are on the harder side, but definitely manageable.
We took our 2nd exam the other day and the class average was a 57%. He makes things more complicated then they need to be. He has a great heart, hilarious jokes, but honestly he can't teach- he just loves math. If you are a great math student you'll be fine, but if math is a difficult topic to grasp, don't waste your time!!!!! People drop his class
Accent isn't too bad. Most of the time doesn't give another example for you because "we don't have time". Online homework is terrible, not his fault. Has tricks in his tests. Learned more from the homework than from his class. One test had caused a failing average for the entire section of MAT124, most likely a teacher problem. Stay away!!!
Took his only precalc class. His tests were nothing like his homework. No review sheet with actual questions and you're basically teaching yourself. The textbook he assigned was not clear enough to teach yourself. He might be different in person but online he was unhelpful.
Professor Chen is an overall good professor but tends to complicate simple things. He gives many opportunities for extra credit and gave a review sheet of everything we needed to know for the final. Expect to work for your grade unless you are great at math. I would recommend him.
I feel like he doesn't get enough credit. He's pretty funny if you allow him to open up to the class. He knows his math very well and doesn't mind stopping if we need an explanation. He quickly responds to my emails when I need math help. Solid 10/10
Great guy, hes funny and he does care that you know the material. However he is a god awful teacher. what i mean by this is he is really lecture heavy, when you ask about a specific problem he some times has a hard time understanding you, that's all i can fit in here but there is more.
This guy was funny as hell. Unfortunately due to his heavy accent, there was a slight language barrier and it was a difficult to understand him. Especially when taking a math class you need to understand the professor to understand the material. Attendance mandatory and hes a tough grader (rarely any partial credit). His humor is what made the class
Usually 2 assignments every other week was due. Tests questions are just like the homework questions. If u work for it u will get it. He will respond quick to emails about homework questions .However it is what it is on ur grade part even if ur one point away from a B or A he won't he it to you which I was dissapointed about .Overall good professor
Dont take this professor. You will fail.
He really isn't a bad teacher. He really does his job. He explains things well and if you don't understand something he clearly explains it. He makes corny jokes here and there and with his accent it makes it even funnier. He is a really chill person. With the homework assignment provides I think it helps with your grade.
Math has never been my best subject but overall he isn't a horrible teacher. The test can be difficult since he always puts all of the hardest question on them but the homework's are easy and help make up for your grade.
Professor Chen is an Ok teacher, but he mainly care about the tests and don't give enough credit for the tons of homework you have to put in for his class. Homework was only 18% for our grade while the 4 tests were 82% combined, I don't think that was fair.
This professor the worse math professor I had to take in Suffolk. I ended up taking him since they change the professor I choose at first. I don't think it was fair we had 16 different homework and were worth one percent, the rest was graded unit test and the final exam. I do not recommend this professor mostly because he didn't help when I needed.
He's a great teacher! His humor made everyone laugh and his method of teaching is efficient. He teaches really well and dumbs down a lot of the info for the ones who can't seem to understand. He has a thick accent but you get used to it. Overall, easy class and would take again!
if you put effort in this class you will be fine. If you have any question you can ask him during hours or through email. He make the whole class laugh. keeps class entertaining!!!!! I would highly recommend this professor. YOU JUST HAVE TO DO YOUR PART RIGHT!!!!!
if you struggle with math I would suggest avoiding this professor. he has a tendency to move very quickly and it was difficult to understand.
Grades extremely hard and doesnt really explain things more then once, so either you get it or you dont
Explains the material very well but the class is very fast paced and the exam questions tend to be tricky. On the bright side, gives extra credit in between.
Generally wants to help his students. Everyone in the class was awful but he was so helpful. Actually learned.
While he has an accent, it didn't take long to understand what he's saying. It may not seem like it at first, but he does care about students doing well. It was my laziness that got me the grade I ended up with, but I felt as though it could've been lower if I didn't show him the amount of effort I would give to pass his class. I'd take him again.
Dr. Chen is a fun and funny guy personality wise for the most part. He gives lots of "partial credit" but more so in the negative direction so be careful. He teaches all of his classes as if they are an honors class. Be prepared to hear "That was a pre req to this class" a lot. Good luck.
If you struggle with math he IS NOT the professor for you. He only explains things once and expects you to understand it. The homework is nothing like the tests, in class he will show us the easiest problems, but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. If you have him as a professor, good luck.
His class is difficult, and there's lots of homework; however, unless you understand Calc 1, you won't be able to keep up in Calc 2, so you will just have to power through the difficulty. He gives extra credit, and counts your homework, these two will help with your grade. He occasionally helped with formulas on tests, especially on the final. Good
No textbook but yes expensive pearson. He was a fine professor took 4 exams and had semi weekly hw(off every 4th week). Everything was on pearson if you do all the hw you should be good if you do extra optional review work you should get an A. Stats could be hard but the way he set up his class you should be able to do well.
Took this class online. "Participation" is calculated by weekly homework assignments. 12 homework assignments, 4 tests and 1 final. Professor is easy to contact and will get back to you. If you have a hw he will record himself walking you through it. Recommend this professor
Uses lecture time to go over homework answers only. you must learn material on your own. does not like repeating himself or going over similar questions. no extra credit, heavy accent. not good at explaining. Seems like a cool dude to go to an oprah with thats about it. Good luck. Do all of your homework and make sure you get 100% on it. HARD TESTS
Amazing. One of my favorite professors I've had. Takes time to make content easy to understand, entertaining. Online homework w/ retries that help w/ understanding lessons. Show up & pay attention and you're good :) Likes baseball, will talk about it with you. Cares about students and wants to help you pass. Thick accent, but you get used to it
i had trouble understanding him due to his accent. he wouldn't let me retake an exam when I was out sick. he doesn't explain things very clearly during lecture. and he's no help with trying to meet at a separate time to try and get extra help. i would not recommend taking him at all, avoid at all costs!!
Took MAT131 online. One HW per week & tests every few weeks with MyLab math & you get unlimited tries with step by step help. You pretty much won't learn anything from him. It helped that I took a calc last year so I knew half the material but toward the end its impossible to learn integrals without help. Stay on track and get good grades = pass.
Very nice professor, always making jokes. Sometimes would extend the homework due dates. Gave some extra credit. However, hw was very heavy somewhat around 100 questions per week. I felt like he went through each chapter very quickly. If you are not strong in math I suggest to choose a different prof. Most kids dropped my class.
This professor just likes to hear himself talk.tests are nothing like the homework assignments.spends an entire class period before a test teaching you things that he claims will be on the test, then makes the majority of the questions about the material he barely covered. No review options before a test and ridiculously long homework assignments
He gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities and he's really funny. Unfortunately, you have to teach yourself most of the material outside of class. If you're going to take this class, take it online! It will be much easier.
The math class was already long but he made it feel unbearable. He goes on a tangent on things both math and not math-related. He takes the time to explain things that are not even in the course. He also repeats himself 162537 times it's so boring. His class feels like a waste of time. You will learn nothing unless you teach yourself.
Refused to write me a letter of recommendation despite receiving a B+. It literally said in his syllabus that he would if your grade was a B or better. He was quite rude about it also. His class was a waste of time and I learned nothing. You need to be able to teach yourself. He also let someone vape in the class and it made me uncomfortable.
His class was alright, nothing crazy. Sometimes he says things that are funny but other times I'm left confused. The class is over 2 hours long but he gave us a break in between. We were allowed a cheet ( or as he says "cheap") sheet for the final exam which really helped. If you complete 87.5(?)% of a homework it counts as 100%.
felt like he was teaching himself math and we were there to watch. Not very clear on some information on practice problems and expected you to have a lot of preliminary knowledge no matter who your previous professors were. Generous grading on homework but the problems are extensive. Do not take if you cannot teach yourself the material.
for anyone with a strong math background, pretty chill and funny, graded by 3 exams and final. he allows index cards for tests which is useful and drops the lowest exam of 3
Prof. Chen honestly wasn't the best. If you don't have a good relationship with stats, don't take him. He knows what he's doing but expects you to do the same, you often have to spend time on his work outside of class. A tough grader, especially on tests. He gives a lot of homework but curves the homework grade. Overall, he wasn't the best to me.
awful not worth the credits for sure going to fail.
Tests do not match up with any classwork/homework, he talks about the most random things and can never give you any help. Don't bother asking any questions you won't get a straight response and he only is in this for the money and doesn't care about his students. If you have any thoughts about having him as your prof I have one word… RUN!!!!
Professor Chen gives extra credit and does not give many exams3 for the semester+no quizes. You have to be ready to study, one mistake will get the whole thing wrong. U should know how to learn on your own, depending on the professor wont get u anywhere,Topic is hard but he doesnt only look if u get the answer,he gives you credit for the work you do
Idk what's up with the bad reviews. I'm terrible at stats. Failed multiple times with different profs. He's the one I passed with. He's funny. Homework boosts your grade so much and he gives extra credit. He does explain things well and makes things fun with the question of the day for attendance.
He has a great sense of humor, and curves test grades when necessary. You only need 88% on the homework sets and he counts it as 100%. The tests on the other hand, are difficult. He's a very specific and tough grader. He makes the tests super long and hardly gives enough time to finish at all. Very lengthy work. Get tutoring if you want to pass.
#1 disregard the comments of him being a easy professor. they are incredibly false. 3 unit tests and 1 final. if you fail final, you fail whole class. No expectations. He does drop lowest test score. Does not curve tests, which is crazy to me because my entire class, expect 1 student, failed unit 2 test. Prepare to teach urself or get tutor
Don't even bother. You're teaching yourself or not getting taught at all. Tests full of tricks and course work that is too easy. Tests are much more complex than course work. There is a language barrier. Prepare to cry.
I would not recommend this professor to anybody. He gives poor lectures, embarrassing attempts at being funny and only here for a check. Doesn't truly care for students, do NOT be out even if you're excused by a doctors note. He doesn't care. Language barrier is difficult. Most of my class is failing and he doesn't give reviews or curves. Goodluck.
My experience was very disappointing. When asking on how to improve my grades, he responds in a condescending manner. His approach to teach is disorganized and sloppy. While he may possess strong mathematical knowledge, that does not make him good at teaching. Be to rely heavily on self-teaching
LANGUAGE BARRIER!!! very strong accent, tough grader, and doesn't care about his students
Does not teach well . Not engaging. Language barrier.
professor jerry is very helpfull, replies very fast
language barrier!!! not a good teacher doesn't engage and bad at teaching
Only about 12 homework sets for the online class and 4 total tests. Class was easy enough I didn't have to email him with questions because the examples provided with the textbooks helped me answer all the homework questions. Similar to delta math. Based off other ratings, I would recommend this professor, but only for online classes.
Professor Chen is an excellent teacher, he goes over everything in class and is great at explaining things! His tests are also extremely easy, I will say 99% of the things on the test is straight forward and straight out of his lectures, he is also humorous and make his lectures enjoyable, definitely take him!
