Now there is no better teacher than this guy. Very funny and outgoing loves his job. Easy test fun assigments. I mean He ROCKS!!!!
Awesome teacher. He should be teaching the Hollywood Elite-- When I am rich and famous I will buy him a movie deal. Your friend, Becca
Very Funny!! A GREAT way to take your fine art requirement. Fun stories.
Dr. Ivins even makes lecture time fun and interesting. His tests are VERY easy,if you put in half an effort to study. His assignments are fun, but can be time consuming. If you find intelligent, talented and funny guys attractive he is HOT!
I think that Doc is a wonderful professor, and it is apparent that he has a passion for film. i love to hear is opinion of movies and his reasoning. i recommend him to anyomne. plus i love that we get to eat in there! LOL! your pal-Funyuns
I didn't think I would enjoy this class, but it was the best class I've taken in a long time. Dr. Ivins brought a unique view into an otherwise cheesy industry.
Humourous, intelligent and pasionate about movies and film making. A hands on class in fillm critique and film making for beginners. You get out what you put into this class. Enjoy - Kiwi
he sux he is hard....unfair....and grumpy he has class favorites
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!
Drama classes are not push over classes; you need to be willing to work, his classes are an easy A if you dont procrastinate, and he can tell if you did!! Trust me!! other than that he is the best professor I've had, and he's freaking hilarious.
It constantly amazes me how a few jerks can log on to this site and exploit it. I have never sent a responce on this site, but after reading the two idiots on here, I had to. I took Dr. Ivins class, and he is the BEST. Dont listen to these two losers...
People who say he's mean, grumpy, etc obviously have something wrong with them. If you show up to class and make a small attempt to do the work, it's an easy A. The tests are super easy, you just look over your notes and watch the movies. Simple as that. I defintely taking him for this class!
Excellent class and excellent teacher. I had very low expectations coming into the class, but Dr. Ivins made the study of the characteristics of form very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and was amazed at the things you can learn about a movie when you break it down and analyze it.
Easy A. Study your notes, watch the films, do the 2 group projects. Simple. Extra credit offered for attending San Jac's drama productions. Only have to actually attend class for about half the semester. Other half can be done on your own time eg. watching films or doing groupwork. Those "hotness" points are misleading! Take him you won't regret it
Neat class, we watched films, had a storyboard assignment, had mini quizes and couple of tests and had two film projects, one counted as final. All the quizes and tests are easy if you pay attention in class and for the tests just go over the notes he gives you the night before. the projects are easy but you do have to put some effort into them
Dr Ivins is a great/funny/fun teacher & loves his work. We had 2 group film projects. Group projects can be a nightmare. If you have someone in your group who is overbearing, bossy, rude, ignorant with ideas, stuck on themselves and it's their way or no way, I suggest you beg to be in another group or you will be miserable, & have crappy projects!!
Dr. Ivins was a great professor. He let you know what you needed to know, and helped with what he could. I catch myself still analyzing movies, now that i have taken this class.

I loved this class! Dr. Ivins goal is to give you the tools to express why you like or dislike a movie. This class also allows you to try your hand at making short movies and to see just what goes into one. Hey Nursing students, this class is a great alternative to Art Appreciation for your Fine Arts credit.
Awesome guy! Really funny. Easy quizzes, fun projects, very interesting. Best teacher at San Jac.
he is an awesome guy and his lectures get me interested in a subject that i normally wouldn't care for
He's Awesome!!! he loves what he does and he's a great teacher. :)
I love Doc so much! He is funny, interesting, insightful, and great to work with. He's a great professor and a great guy. Can't wait to get started on the Christmas show with him!!
I love this teacher!!!!!!!! He is so damn funny. And like all the movies we watch.
Didn't want to do REAL editing before this class. Now I'm thinking about going into it as a profession. Thank you Dr. Ivins. Oh, to Dr. Ivins' detractors... you aren't fit to lick this man's shoes.
He was awesome and hot!!! He was also very helpful and caring not to mention funny!!!!
I had so much fun in this class. You actually come to class for only eight days, because the others are optional. He's a very good professor. He gives lecture( very easy) and then quiz you on them. The tests are very easy. He does requires 2 projects, film projects. Again, they are very easy. Take this class!!
This class was very easy. Make a minor effort and you will make an A. You get to watch movies, make movies, and talk about movies-- what could be better? Not to mention that the teacher is dead sexy!
Has his favorites. Good teacher overall. Knows what he is talking about. Can be mean when stressed out. Would recommend him as a theatre teacher.
Pretty easy teacher. Tests can be kind of tricky. I'm not sure how he is in the classroom, but some confusing communication online! Nice guy. Be sure to do practice tests and actually watch the films! MEET ALL DEADLINES!
If you're taking him for a basic class, you're good to go, he's great. But, if you're a Theatre major, you might just be out of luck. He picks favorites, usually whoever kisses up to him, and it shows -- it's painfully obvious if you aren't one. If you aren't, stick with Meyer or Turner, as Doc will make you miserable the entire time you're there.
Doc is AWESOME! I had never taken an acting class before in my life, but I had been interested in it and Doc made my interest spark even more! I am seriously considering making theatre/drama/acting my major and my career because of him. Don't piss him off him and your good. yeah he plays favorites but what professor doesnt?
I made an A!! Doc is awesome. I took his distant learning course and loved it. My advise to you would be to actually WATCH the movies, pay attention to detail in both the movie and on what he's asking of you for each unit. He is clear on what he needs from you, prompt to reply when e-mailing him. I have not one complaint~
Good teacher overall
I took Ivins Intro to motion picture arts class online. I would not recommend him. He's not at all understanding and if you have issues with blackboard ( it not grading your test or shutting down during tests ect...) he wont help you at all.
I also took Ivins' Distance Learning film class in the summer, and found the instructor to be MOST helpful. Returned emails within an hour, gave us files of his notes on the readings, no textbook. He will reset tests one to two times, but if you need more than that, you should not be taking a DL class! I highly recommend the class!
I also took the class during the summer. Not sure why the person posted what he did. Ivins reset my tests when I had problems. No textbook, readings online, he gives us his notes on the readings, as well. Returns emails within an hour. I HIGHLY recommend the course!
I took this DL class in the holiday mini was really easy just read the material and watch the movies and take a test over them. There was 7 quizzes and the Final was all the quizzes put together so make sure you print them out made an A.
Great Professor! I took his distance learning class Intro to Film and it was EASY! I am glad I found this class so I would not be stuck taking any of those music classes. Dr. Ivins return emails the same day. He posts all his tests and work online so you have the option to complete hings really early. Take him he is GREAT!
Took Intro to Motion Pictures in Winter-Mini. I finished the 3 wk class in 2 wks. The class is interesting and super easy, Youjust have to do the reading, watch the movies and take a short quiz of about 20 questions. There are also 2 discussion posts during the semester. Highly recommend this class for thos that need a ARTS/DRAMA credit.
He is a great professor. I would highly recommend this course if DRAMA is your major. I took this class for an elective-he is pretty easy.
EASIEST CLASS EVER!!! Took him online for 3 Week mini and it was an EASY A+!!!
Hands down the EASIEST class I have ever taken in my whole entire life. Took the course for 3wk mini. No book required. All the reading material is provided on Blackboard.
Dr. Ivins is GREAT!!! He was one of the most helpful professors I had this semester.
Dr. Ivins is GREAT!!! He was one of the most helpful professors I had this semester.
This class requires lots of reading and have matching questions for quizzes not enough time given to take the quizzes. Requires lots of reading and questions on the quizzes are not on the reading material assigned! This class is NOT an easy A!
Film appreciation. Lots of provided online reading (no textbook) and current film viewing required. Very clear on instructions and expectations. Quick to respond to emails. Genuinely cares about students. Easy course as long as you keep up with the required work. Took it in winter mini.
Very easy class. Easiest A I have ever gotten. There is no text book so that makes this class one of the cheapest as well. Great teacher too.
If he was the first instructor I ever encountered in college, I never would have went back. Not clear - instructions are so wordy it's easy to get jumbled up what the assignment is.
His instructions are so confusing! He does not work with you on it either.
The plus is there is lots of online reading, no book required. The negative is the condescending, rude manner of dealing with students. Don't waste your time. There are others who will actually help you if you're confused.
I highly recommend Dr. Ivins. There's no textbook required and it's a very organized class. I took it in a 5 week summer session. Eight units (including the final exam) with two units due per week. Per unit, I only did about 1-2 hours of reading the articles and made it out with an A+. Well worth it if you're willing to put in the work.
Class could be really good. He's not clear on instructions though and then you will be penalized for misunderstanding. Grades harshly for mistakemisunderstanding too. Unprofessionally rude.
Professor Irvins or Doc as he likes to be called, is an awesome professor of the arts. I took his online film appreciation class, and I am happy I did. He is clear about expectations in his class, and provides you with online reading material instead of costly textbooks. He offers extra credit and is always available. I would recommend his class!
I was a little scared to be honest to take his class after I saw the reviews but he is a great teacher and responds to every email when you need help. Took his winter mini class and there was homework everyday and an exam almost everyday but the exams were easy except for one of them. Just do the work and you'll pass!
Mr. Ivens created this class and as long as you participate and go over the notes after lectures you will pass. He makes his lectures interesting so time goes by fast.
I took this professor for 3-week mini. So basically everyday there was an assignment due. Prof. provided us with a course schedule, where everything was planned out with due dates along with what movies to watch ahead of time. So it helped to get my H.W done around my work schedule. He replies to emails ASAP. Just get your assignments done on time
Jerry Ivins was great at making sure everyone was updated every step of the way. He sent out reminders as due dates approached. He also responded to emails quicker than I have ever experienced from a professor. This was a great class.
Doesnt give clear instructions and when you ask him questions he refers you back to the syllabus/ unit instructions. Clearly if Im asking a question I have read what you have gave us. Hes very rude
Great to learn from. He made this class so much fun and I enjoyed him being my professor.
He gives you deadlines but he really expects for you to get done a week or two before the deadline or he gets upset and sends mass emails about students waiting until the last minute to complete assignments. Even if you meet the deadline, hell still be upset that you waited until the last day. Lol
He takes the time to work with you!!!! He is helpful. Online is a must!!!! This was my first ever college semester and it was not as stressful as I thought, ALL you have to do is read!!! and Read and take notes! You will do fine if you manage your time!! Watch films. 2 Critques analysis- and 8 tests . Put effort and you will passs!!
If you want to take DRAM2366, I would recommend taking it online. I took it in person with Dr. Ivins who is a solid professor. He communicates very well with the class about what needs to be done and how it should be done. Opportunities for extra credit are available as well. If you do take him in person, make sure to show up on required days.
I was blessed to find an online instructor who cares so much for his students and has the credentials to teach this course, he loves film and he'll make you love it too! Responds so promptly you feel as if you have a guide with you all along. Most of the readings are short and to the point, watching movies is the best part! Love love this class!
He's very nice, gives you opportunities for extra credits, very clear, and he cares a lot about his students. Oh, and the class is very, very easy.
He is very thorough about how he wants his assignments completed. If you take him online, you can read/watch ahead but you'll have to wait for the tests to open according to the dates on the syllabus. He sends out frequent email reminders and extra credit is also available. I got my art credit from this course, so you don't have to take Art App.
He makes you work for the grades, though the assignments themselves aren't difficult at all. His class structure is absurd. He has 0 flexibility on how he grades and his assignments have to be done exactly how he wants and when he wants it submitted it or else its a failure. No second chances or make ups here.
He is awesome. He is very clear on his instructions and expectations. He tells you that there is no excuse and late work will not be accepted. But if you dont wait till the last minute, it isnt a problem. I met the instructor in person and now wish I had taken an inperson full semester class. Very accessible. Group project is easy.
Dr. Ivins was amazing. I took this class as my fine arts class, I did this as a 3 week winter mini course of the holiday. I was very apprehensive as I am new to this life called college. He was very clear detailed in his instructions. He stayed in contact and was very responsive to emails. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and would take again if need
Talking down to anyone and everyone whenever you feel like it is not how you present yourself professionally, however that will probably happen to you in his courses. This is a very common problem I feel with educators in general, but at the college level it starts to get really unacceptable, and at the same time more common.
Please avoid this professor. He has absolutely no flexibility. When asking for assistance on issues with a graded assignment, he will not help you at all. There is no proper feedback. Just blaming. It seems as though he is too lazy to go back in and correct mistakes or help out students beyond what is minimally required of him to not lose his job.
The teacher talks down to people and is very stubborn. He doesn't extend due dates at all even if you have a legitimate reason for not being able to do the work. His instructions are horrible and unclear. Do not take this class. Save yourself the headache and do not take this class. Take someone else I promise you will have a better time.
I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS. Work is not hard as long as you read the online chapters he has assigned. The work in this class is not stressful at all! This is one of my first online classes and im NOT AT ALL disappointed !! And you get to watch some good movies. Professor is constantly sending updates and reminders about homework & quizzes!
I took this professor for Intro to Film online and it was great at first. I did all the assignments which were super easy and he gave lots of reminders. However, amid the COVID-19 and stresses of the transition to online classes, my perspective of him changed. He is rude when corresponding emails and gave no help whatsoever. Wouldnt take him again
The person below me hardly knows anything about me and is misunderstanding what happened. I left a rating and I dont know where it went but this was during the fall semester when it happened when production was going on. From what I experienced he can be chill but can be rude and talk down on people. Its an environment I dont know want to be in.
Professor Ivins gives clear instructions for homework/exams and completes grading promptly. He is strict on due dates, but it's necessary to grade on time. The unit instructions are perfect and very easy to take notes on. Overall Professor Ivins was a fantastic instructor and I could not have made an A without him.
Probably the worst Professor Ive ever had. Needs to understand that not everyone is perfect in life. He was very rude, and would avoid at all cost. Would give him less stars if could. 80% of the time he gives clear instructions, I will give him that. The other 20%, you are expected to know the instructions anyways because its in the syllabus.
Favorite course so far thanks to this Professor. He gave plenty extra credit opportunities towards the end of the course. Books werent required but there is some reading material. He is clear with his instructions. If you dont pass this class its because you didnt pay attention to the instructions.
Honestly, very rude. Emailed with professor with concerns about some unclear instructions. Things that other students had concerns with. In lack of words the teacher called me stupid with out saying I was stupid. Among me hearing other things from other students as well.
Believe me when I say DO not trust any of the positive reviews. I know multiple people who have taken his classes and it is all the same story. He is extremely rude to students and talks down to them in email responses. If you mess up ANY part of the instruction, expect a 0. If you have the option, I strongly recommend taking a different professor
Took this class and had no problem doing the work but this professor is not helpful at all. Gives zeros out super easily. Didnt make me feel like he wanted me to succeed.
There is no textbook. Not sure why the previous rating said there is. Allows late work, can take exams up to three times, absences do not effect grade, finished class ahead of schedule. Ivins gives clear directions, videos going over the instructions, example files, non-mandatory Zoom meetings, emails and announcements. Best class! Great Prof!
Not going to lie. At first I thought he was going to be a total stickler, but I think he just wants his class to be taken seriously. You get all these handouts at first, more than other classes. I thought I was going to hate this class. I think he does that to set the tone. It's a simple class. Take his class. Just download and save all notes!
I took this class and I must say it was very easy! Simply do the work and you will pass. He does not give loads of assignments & you will have plenty of time to complete them. Watch the movie & for each question your answer usually has to be around 150 words. I would highly recommend taking this class! He does offer extra credit as well!
Funny, reasonable, and passionate about Film Appreciation! A very easy class as long as you follow the written instructions provided. Many handouts and filmed lectures for each exam. I would definitely take again! The movies chosen to watch were overall enjoyable and this was a fun class to take. Plenty of time between due dates to avoid cramming.
His directions are ALWAYS confusing and incorrect (he'll direct you to a nonexistent page on BB, etc.), and he'll give you a zero if you do ANYTHING wrong. He spams emails every day about how nobody submits assignments the second they open. The films are lame, and the analysis is surface level. If you like film, you'll get nothing from this class.
This was one of my favorite classes! Dr. Ivins a lot of extra credit. Gives his personal lecture notes, videos going over the notes, and provides examples of the work. He offered Zoom meetings for questions over the materials. That is four different opportunities to learn the material. The only way to get a zero is not not submit.
Awful. Instructions are confusing and he spams you with mails all day. I emailed him day 5 of class for help bc his instructions are unclear and he sent me 5 paragraphs saying I should drop the class. I said sorry and did homework following instructions and he gave me a 0 for not putting the word count. He is also very rude, drama fits him so much.
I took his online class and the work was very easy. some might think its a lot but its basically over movies from recent years. The test are over the notes he give, video and documents. very hard to fail.
Honestly, there is no reason for anyone to fail this course. It's all online, pay attention to due dates, you could submit everything early so don't be lazy like I did, actually watch the films he suggests, for extra credit the plays are all CASH ONLY, seriously just submit everything early there's no easy to be lazy!!!!
Honestly just mean. Took his online class which was easy enough but the little correspondence I did have with him over email was not pleasant. Definitely felt like he cared more about berating than helping me.
Mean and rude professor. My experience with him is not good.
Very easy class. The material is easy to follow , it's drama after all. The tone and demeanor of this online class is extremely unpleasant. I strongly urge you finish this class as early as you can to get it out of the way.
Honesty, an easy class. He's not very understanding of students' outside lives though, so if you miss a deadline or perhaps didn't do the work EXACTLY like how he asked— you're literally just going to get a zero on said assignment. Considering the course, i wouldn't think it's that serious...
The class is pretty straightforward, just be sure to stay on top of the assignments. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep. The professor can be a bit picky, but if you engage with the material, you'll do well.
I took his course years ago. I was in his drama program and I can say it almost killed my love of acting. He is cruel to those that don't suck up to him. He once sat his class down and told us we would only make it if we “did things” for producers. Horrible man.
Took this class as a May mini and it was easy! It consisted of 8 exams and 2 projects. The projects were the same where you had to analyze a play. Only difference was that one of the projects was a group one, but your grade is based on your work only. Main advice is listen to directions. He includes an example of what your project should look like
Professor does not state instructions. He assumes that his directions are sufficient, but they are lacking. His grades are all or nothing. One thing wrong and it's a 0. He does not know how to run an online class and should retire.
this guy took 20 points off an assignment with like 40 questions and i just forgot to provide one more example:| he expects everyone to follow his 3 page long instructions for each assignment and is confused as to why people don't do it right. no sir.
If you have the time to take this class, cool. But it is all or nothing. His instructions are long and unorganized. You get one thing wrong or mixed up, you get a 0. Don't have a Mac book. He only accepts word documents. I do give it to him that he gave us 1 extension. His expectations for an online class are extremely high.
Does not accommodate for ANY SITUATION (including disability). His assignments are open three days and he will refuse to take anything after, even for late points. You either get a 100 or a 0, he refuses to grade assignments that don't perfectly match his pages of instructions. Publicly shames students in discussions for not following instructions.
