Does not realize that his old tests circulate the e-school.
He found out and changed all the test
Very Easy Class.
I thought he was good
Made PDEs very easy.
Good class, evil final exam
He explains to fast so you have one of 2 options: pay attention OR take notes (NOT both!). He has weird methods to solve problems which can mix up your mind. Tests are supposed to be similar to sample tests posted con BB, however in my class they were not similar!!!! (in previous classes they were). I dont recommend him, also off hrs are limited.
Very interesting guy to do research with.
he is a great teacher. he wants you to learn and really understand what you are doing it for. sometimes he can go off topic but it is just because he is excited about letting you know what he knows. he is not easy. and he want you to know your stuff for test and finals
His teaching skills are kind of lacking.. He tends to blabber about things, where it's just easier and less confusing if he were to just explain the problems straightforwardly. The tests are not hard - he gives you practice tests and the two are very similar. You also even get to retake one of your two tests for a higher grade!
The lectures were a waste of time because he does not explain things very well and basically puts the examples from the book on the board. Then, he'll do them wrong and not realize it until he is done with the entire problem. The only good thing is that his tests come almost exactly from the reviews. Did a retake for one test during the summer.
Very difficult professor. Barely thought I would pass going into the final. Thank God that I passed.
If you are taking engineering math... go with another professor! his tests are much harder and his is less clear in his teaching. I dropped map3305 with magnan after getting a horrible score on my first test and took it with sussman instead and it was sooo much easier and easier to do well.
Assigned problems completely worthless, even if you've taken the time to teach them to yourself. Uncaring and harsh regardless of effort put in. Exams not even close to the review guide. All in all a terrible teacher. Retaking it with another professor (A fresh TA) garnered a MUCH higher grade/confidence of subject matter.
Unless you already have a background in calculus DO NOT take this prof. He does not do a good job at explaining and goes very fast. He does not care if you are falling behind he just expects you to 'get it.' Study guide is somewhat like test but don't count on it to help all the time. Very Hard Professor.
He is a horrible professor. He does not teach very well. At times, it seems like he is talking to himself. Unless you have a good base in Calculus, I do not suggest taking this class.
Does not make any sense during his lectures, he is definitely in his own little world. If you go to office hours, be warned he will not make anymore sense, nor will he tell you why he is doing something but instead say "if you went to class you would know this." Also, if you e-mail him for help he tends to belittle you.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! Run while you can. He lectures straight to the projector and nobody in the class understands him. The average day we do maybe 2 example problems, great way to learn right?
Dr. Magnan is some serious hot garbage. He cannot teach whatsoever. He talks into the projector and goeson crazy tangents about aliens and physicists. Avoid this man and the mexican guy.
You will absolutely NOT understand anything he says. I had a strong base of Calc in high school so i knew what was going on & the way he explained everything was SO obscure. He BABBLES! His teaching style is very annoying and you can almost never get in touch with him outside of class. He never seems to know what he's doing himself.
Dr.Magnan is a somewhat great guy, he messes up a lot but he usually fixes it. He comes up with great lines like "leaps of logic" and "rookie mistakes". He might confuse you so talk to the TA or use the book. If you put effort in the class he will usually give you a boost. His test are average. He gives lots of examples in his lectures.
Magnan is clearly a smart guy who knows his calculus but he teaches the class as if everyone loves math. Rather than going through several difficult problems and showing us things we are likely to screw up on, he takes 2 or 3 easy examples and talks about them in graduate level detail which is unhelpful to those of us with no experience in calculus
In short he is one of the worst teachers at fsu. He waists class time on useless sample problems and tests on things you have never seen before. He should be avoided at all costs unless you like bad teachers. Please avoid this class.
Prof magnan is smart guy and does know what he is talking about, but he is not a good teacher. he made many mistakes while lecturing. he needed to do more examples in class. he was actually better teaching a small of students in his office. You have to do all the homework becaue it can help on test.go to class and recitation
avoid at all costs. teaches calc 1 on a calc 3 level. he's smart, however he is a TERRIBLE teacher.
Dr. Magnan was a clear teacher who had a passion for the intersection of math and science. He inspired me to further studies in math when I had him and would recommend him to anyone who loves math.
Dr. Magnan knows his stuff, but doesn't know how to teach. He is so smart in mathmatics but don't take his class if you haven't had experience in calculus. Don't get me wrong, he is very friendly, encouraging, and intelligent, but he just doesn't teach or present very well.
Knows his stuff very well. Relates math to real world. Will help you a great deal if you demonstrate that you are serious about the course. Treats students with respect, and like mature, responsible adults.n Plan to take another course from him. Great prof!
Excellent teacher. Lectures are self-contained with clear and detailed explanations of topics and many examples. The math and problems are difficult and complicated and the pace can be fast so don't fall behind. Fair exams with no surprises (gives test study problems with solutions). He will get you unstuck on HW problems during his office hours.
Dr. Magnan is a very smart and passionate individual. He relates the math to real world examples and was always willing to help me during office hours. If you take his class, make sure you are disciplined enough to do some extra problems if you need some more practice. One of my favorite professors !
Very smart, Very professional. I had to late withdraw, hard course. You will likely have to do extra homework in order to pass. About half the class passes the tests, he said thats normal. Always willing to help whenever he can. Awesome professor, but I thought he made it too hard. Like I said, I had to late drop.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. If you are looking to get an easy A, then don't take classes with him. Though, if you are looking to learn and understand math better then you should take classes with him. The tests are fair, so if you are willing to put in the work, you will highly benefit from taking classes with him. Recommend 100%.
Took MAC2313 with him, loved the class,so decided to take MAP2302 with him. Very passionate about math, very willing to help. Not an easy class, but if you enjoy math, you will definitely enjoy his class.
Goes too fast during lectures, assigns 50-60 hw problems to study from for tests.(big problems) all tests on webassign via testing center(must have exact answer). I love math and failed this class, take this professor at own risk.
He is very knowledgeable about the subject, but he makes it difficult for students to understand. Trying to supplement lectures by reading the book won't help because he does some things his own way. I was in his office frequently but still had to withdraw. Smart guy, tests are fair, but he's definitely not the best teacher.
Magnan is hands down the worst math teacher I have ever had at FSU. He spends half of class time rambling on about unrelated topics. The other class time is him working through all the proofs of equations, like we need to know that for cal3.. His tests are all on the computer, you must enter an exact answer with no partial credit given. DONT TAKE!
Wonderful prof. One of the best that I've had. Clear explanations. Not difficult, but you have to do your homework to keep up. He gives you the details as well as the big picture, and how it is applied. Test are fair. Would definitely take again.
Took ODE from this prof. I'm an Applied Math major, and want to be just like Dr. Magnan. He works out the math very clearly in class while explaining every step. Has deep knowledge of math and how applied in science/engineering. Great personality and approach to teaching. Easy to talk to and helpful. Fair exams. Do lots of HW problems for an A.
Dr. Magnan explains everything very well, and works out lots of examples in class, from the easy ones to the more difficult. It is a great help for learning. He loves to teach us and doesn't waste time in class. Easy to approach with questions. I would want to take another math class with him. Tough grader, but gives straightforward exams.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Simplifies the calculus topics down to the basics. He gives very clear, and enjoyable lectures. Calc III is a 5 credit hour course and requires a lot of study and HW and preparation for class and tests. Dr. Magnan was very helpful after class and during office hours. Great professor!
webassign tests should not exist in calculus. Study the homework. Tests usually had bonus; nice-ish guy, useless teacher (quotes the book). Why bother attending?
I think he's been writing fake comments about himself-everyone I've talked to whose taken a course from him says the same thing; lazy teacher, doesn't even look at your work, webassign tests and math dont mix. He can't get through a section in time without skipping half the examples, usually the hard ones which are on the tests. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid
Dr. Magnan's MAC2313 is not easy. His lectures are clear but *he doesn't cover everything you need to know*. You must read the book. He'll answer questions. Here's what you need to do: work out every homework problem assigned. Now do them all again. Then do all the WebAssign twice. I got a very high A but I studied day and night.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! This guy is lazy-he quotes the book directly and still manages to mess stuff up. Tests are on WEB-ASSIGN, no partial credit (in a math class...seriously?!). Calc 3 is an easy class if you did well in 1 and 2-unless you have this guy
Dr.Magnan is a very nice guy. and wants his students to learn the material. He does go over long derivations in class but he also does examples that help with the HW. The tests are in Web Assign, but he will give partial credit based on the error in your answer and the questions are usually the same as the HW questions.I'd take him again.
Teach yourself
Homework and tests are on webassign. Therefore the tests are much like the homework. The homework is not required, but is a must do in order to pass the tests. Yes, you will have to do a lot learning on you're own, but webassign is really helpful (despite popular opinion). I would actually think about taking him again.
He's lazy who reads the book to you and doesn't give partial credit for a math class. It's a ridiculous. Never take.
the only grades in this class are four tests and the final. no quizzes or hw or attendance factor into your final grade. the tests are all timed and online and there is no partial credit and you have to take them in a room at school so you can't use your book or notes. after the first test there was only three people left in the class.
Worst teacher ever. You have to teach yourself and make sure you don't miss any minus signs.
I was about to get a D in this classs but after talk to him im almost getting a B
Yes the only grade you get in this class are the 5 tests you take, but the tests are the Web Assign homework verbatim. If you do all of the homework and study it this class is an easy A. Also, Dr. Magnan will do his best to give you points back if you make arithmetic errors, or make a simple error, such as forgetting to multiply by 2
I have yet to even make it halfway through the semester and can tell you that if you want to learn in class find another professor. Lectures and notes on the board are so disorganized you must choose between listening and taking notes. Tests are exponentially harder than lecture examples and assigned hw. 1st test was below a 50 average class wide.
It's calc 3 and a very tough class to teach. He does a good job if you're a visual learner however the tests are no partial credit which is just a little ridiculous. Get ready to be obsessive about minor errors, its the difference between an A and a D.
His lectures are long and he is really hard to follow. He mumbles and scribbles illegibly half of the time. His grading scale is ridiculous. I think he wants you to fail his class.
The ultimate failer. As a cs student the best way I can describe his class is a bunch of nested loops which he breaks in and out of without telling you. Im gonna pass with a good grade but most likely the worst professor I've ever had.
Avoid at all costs!
his lectures are long and terribly boring, he teaches straight from the textbook word for word, he mumbles about random tangents during his lectures, makes many mistakes while lecturing and doesn't correct them as if the class knows what he did wrong. Tests are nothing like any of the problems in the textbook.
Your only grades are five online tests, with no partial credit offered. He will read you the textbook in class, and often gets the wrong answers for examples. Just don't. Also added extra 8 AM lectures on material we were tested on outside of the scheduled class meetings. I didn't learn anything
Is not helpful when asking for help with anything, avoids speaking in person. His test are nothing like the homework. The material in the book seems to be easier but when the test come around it is nothing like the questions you practice from the book.
One of the worst teachers I have had at FSU. Avoid him if you can. You can get through it if you have a good study group, but man. He is extremely boring and unclear.
The tests are ridiculous. The test questions are ten times harder than the ones he goes over in class while he expects you to do those problems almost just as fast as he can.
He uses a web site to grade the test, so there isn't partial credit, ahhhhhh.
Dr. Magnan is a nice guy who obviously is passionate about math but his lectures are boring and he digresses all the time. He also only gives 5 online tests and those are what make up your grade. If you make a dumb algebra error he'll give you points back but the tests are tough. They are EXACTLY like the webassign homework though!!!
Taken during Summer A. Only grades for the class were 6 tests. Very hard grader, looks for any reason to take off points during a test. Subtly brags through tangents during lectures. Seems to use class time to boost his own ego. Going to lecture was usually confusing and not helpful. Skipping class and studying with a group was much more effective.
Professor Magnan was probably the hardest professor I have ever taken. He doesn't explain things well and his entire class grade is based on five very hard tests that you can't get partial credit on without asking him. Even when you do ask him you're limited to three questions and they can't be any issue other than a simple algebraic error.
I am still mentally scarred from taking this class more than a year ago. As a soon to be graduate ill say that this was the hardest teacher of my life. As someone who refuses to fail when failure is the norm in this class I really pushed myself to an unhealthy level, got a good grade but was turned off of math forever. Great researher, not teacher.
You MUST read if you are an FSU MATH GRAD. DON'T CHOOSE MEGHAN AS YOUR MAJOR PROFESSOR! NEVER! 1. He isn't professional. He has no publication in past 10 years! He isn't capable of giving any useful academic advices on your research. 2. He isn't responsible. At least 3 PhD students had to quit in their 5th or 6th year.
Worst professor I've ever had. All of his tests are done through WebAssign, and therefore getting partial credit for answers is difficult. He is lazy and prefers to stroke his ego in front of the class rather than caring about if students learn the information. Your entire grade is based on the average of 5 tests, how
I never leave reviews, but I felt compelled to warn other students to avoid Prof Magnan at all costs! Do not ignore the reviews.
Your whole grade in the course would be 4 Tests and a final. Homework is on webassign and is optional but the test are completely identical to the homework, just different numbers. He does not give partial credit. But he lets you retake two tests if you don't like the grade you received. You won't learn from him but it's not hard to pass.
Professor Jerry Magnan is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. His lectures are not helpful, and the homework, as well as the example tests, are nothing like the actual tests. Your grade in his class is based on 4 tests alone, which he gives no partial credit for. Youre better off learning on YouTube. Dont take his class.
I had professor magnan in fall of 2015 in calc 3 and am now a graduate with a full time job and reflecting back on it, he was the worst part of my entire 4 year experience. The fact that the course is based off of webassign is ridiculous, while I wanted to learn this class taught me nothing besides memorization. Worst Prof at fsu.
Guys he is 100% the worst teacher at FSU. Please listen to these reviews. His tests are online with no partial credit, and his lectures are useless. If you take him you will not get any higher than a B and thats only if you're retaking it. He has about a 60% fail rate.
He's a great researcher and you can tell he knows what he's doing, but he isn't the best at teaching it. Handwriting is hard to read, in-class examples could be explained more, and the only grades in this class were tests. He offered extra credit after the first test which was nice, but the tests are still difficult and take quite a bit of studying
He's so bad that I (an engineering graduate) still comes back to let students know that he needs to be avoided at all cost.
No partial credit for exams. Exams are the only grade in the class. Also rude to students. Makes you feel dumb for not knowing the answers rather than explaining it to you.
Prof. Magnan was genuinely excited to teach everyday he came in. His method of teaching is the normal note copying method but the delivery is phenomenal . He will give partial credit if you attempt to use the methods he taught but will not for incorrectly memorized formulas. He wants you to remember how those formulae are derived. Very nice prof.
Terrible at teaching, very unorganized
Despite what many say, I actually did not have a problem with Dr. Magnan's class. I had him for the Summer semester for ODE. He was very caring and respected and wanted you to know the material. One of the toughest graders out there, no curves, occassional extra credit. This class was tough but if you do the material, it should be an A for you.
I would never take a class with this professor ever again. He's fine if you don't mind the rambling and a flipped classroom. But if all you want is to learn math DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. 85% of our grade is based on 5 exams (including the final) the other 15% on in-class quizzes there's a quiz every day. No curves or extra credit.
Never take ANY course with this professor. He doesn't care about his students and cares more about getting a problem he is solving correctly. He asks more questions than he answers and is forgetful of scheduled meetings out of class time. 5 exams are worth 85% of the grade; quizzes, homework, and sample tests do not help at all. Awful person. 0/5
Professor Magnan clearly understands differential equations, but he cannot for the life of him teach it to his students. Or maybe he can, if he actually decided to teach the material instead of giving us prerecorded online lectures. I had to drop this class after getting the lowest test score in my life on the first major test (12/150).
