I enjoyed this English class. As long as you show up and make an effort. I also found him to be very funny at times.

I don't know how you can complain about this guy. He's not easy (this IS college), but he's hands down the best (most giving and caring) English prof at Moorpark.

I enjoyed this English class it wasnt that hard so long as you do the work.

He encourages students to think for themselves. He does not make you write his way, you are able to show your own writing talents without feeling intimidated.

I loved this guy! he was so funny and he made going to class a lot of fun! He encouraged us to write what we wanted and how we wanted!

Jerry's class was very easy and very helpful. He makes the class fun, but at the same time you get so much constructive criticism on your writing. It's great. I found myself improved as a writer after taking his class.

He's the best ever. Don't ask why, just take him.

VERY awesome guy who is there to help his students. He doesn't babysit his class. Do an assignment, get an A. Simple and clear. He has a passion for helping writers who are motivated and want to improve their writing.

If there is a better teacher than Mansfield, then please some one show me! He is to the point, helps you when you need it, and does not critize you for your opinions. Top Notch and the best English teacher i have ever had

Awesome teacher. Really funny, really reasonable. The class I was in felt like a high school english class, so it could have been super boring, but he made it enjoyable. Totally willing to reconsider grades on essays, and is good about catering toward your talents. Would take him again for sure

Cool, funny guy. His class was a joy, and i'd recommend to anyone who needs to take an English. His class is really early though...8am is hard to wake up for, but if u can wake up that early, he's definitely worth taking. Heck...he's worth takin even if u can't wake up early.

Mansfield is awesome. Class was fun. Encourages you to think and lets you voice an opinion with discussion assignments. Very positive teacher, has enthusiasm for his students, seems to enjoy teaching. I would take one of his classes again

The class was a joke, but it wasn't his fault...it's sort of like a remedial high school class...he is a great teacher, real funny, and best of all he listens to everyone's opinion with great interest...good teacher...i hope to take him again soon

I had Mansfield for creative writing, and he has to be one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's very personable and funny, knows his stuff, and is always helpful. You can speak to him openly and without the usual professorial pretense. Real down-to-earth and friendly. I highly reccomend.

Very easy professor. You don't do squat in his class. He says he'll give you quizzes...he doesn't. He says he'll give you seven reports...you do two, and whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOKS!! YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO USE THEM!! Easy grader, too. I got a B w/out trying.

Very cool teacher. Would defintely recommend! Only 3 papers all sesmester, but there are many group discussions with essay pieces, but that makes the class even more interesting. I enjoyed the class and wish I would have taken him for M01A. He's always there to help and has a great sense of humor!

He's a very cool guy and way too easy on his class. We must have gone over the same crap 50Xs and what was sad was that some people STILL didn't get it. Extremely easy A. Just turn in your work, though. This class is like a high school english class, and sadly most of the people in there tend to act like high schoolers themselves...

Creative Writing is the easiest class. Gauranteed A as long as you do the assignments and attend the workshops. Mansfield is a character. very funny and interesting to be around.

A note about some of these posts. He IS great (cool, down-to-earth, etc) like most of these posts say. But he is NOT as easy as some of these people say. I took 1A before (had to drop -- job change). The work load in Mansfield's class was way heavier than my other 1A. Mansfield just makes it seem easier. But you'll have a LOT of work to do.

Great teacher, funny, interesting, great at teaching writing. Assignments are easy and fun, class never gets boring even at night. Only downside, a little unclear about grading specifics and attendance and participation are important.

Anyone who says he is an unfair grader is crazy. (or super lazy) This guy genuinely cares that you take something away from this class. He is very fair and thrilled to help if you ask for it. Plus he is such a sweet guy who makes class enjoyable with his sense of humor. One of the best profs at Moorpark. Dont expect an easy A though!

Here's the thing w/ Mansfield. He's totally brilliant (his published writing is incredible), but he's not stuck up about it and actually does want to help you. You'll still have to do the work, but he's the best.

This guy is great. laid back but still really serious about his teaching. He teaches like a stand-up comic. I love taking his classes, and he's really inspired me. Creative writing club is fun, too.

I have to disagree with the previous rater. Mansfield's very clear on assignments; he just demands that you actually follow them. All in all, he rocks and is totally committed to student success. Just don't expect to skate through without doing the work.

I don't know how he was for the regular English classes, but if you have any interest in creative writing TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Hilarious, very many inside jokes with the class develop. He can make fun of himself which is way important. Yay!

A lot of fun. He seemed to really care about the class and always had something constructive to say about the writings that student submitted.

This guy is so overrated! He was so busy trying to impress students how "hip" he was. He let students nod off in class! The class had no direction. It was a joke. For students who worked hard and took the class seriously to try to learn something useful, he was an unfair grader, marking down good work that deserved higher grades. Disappointing!!!!!

He is a great guy and a great teacher if you're there to learn. If you want an easy A, don't take this class. Assignments can be difficult but he gives plenty of opportunities during class and during office hours to clear up questions and provide help if you ask.

Mansfield is an awesome teacher! Yes, he can be a hard grader, but he is only trying to help you improve. He explains things clearly, and really does want to help the students! I would definately recommend taking his class!

If you do the assignments and listen to what he wants, you will do fine. Papers due are fairly easy to get done. The only problem I had with the class was I didn't like the political remarks that he made, it wasn't appropriate.

Class was fairly easy, homework once a week that took about half an hour to complete, managed to keep me awake in a class that I figured would be boring, real good personality, is able to relate to his students.

Awesome instructor. Really wants you to get it and is very helpful. I didn't really care much about writing until this class but Mansfield inspired me. I can see why some students don't like him--he's very straight with you and some people can't handle that.

He's fairly easy. Each person has to do a group project, which is to lead a class discussion, but it's not hard. Fairly easy grader, and will help if you ask. Almost every week we had to turn in a 1-page paper on the topic of discussion, and there are 4 essays.

These are the facts about Jerry- he's liberal, sarcastic, and his idea of the f-bomb is saying that something "flows." If any of these things push your buttons, don't take him. Otherwise he's a fairly easy grader and you'll have a good time in his class. Well, Jerry, don't say I never said anything nice about you!

He's a really great guy. He starts out grading hard but than gets easier. 4 essays, reading response every week. Tuesday you don't do anything. Thursday you do student led discussions. Lets you redo your lowest essay. He's liberal, though, and will freely talk about his liberal opinions.

He's a really great guy. Grades extremely fair, and lays everything out in the beginning of the semester. He cracks jokes, so if that's bothersome to you, don't take him. Obviously, do the work, get the grade. Overall, you can tell he knows what he is talking about, and there is much to be learned from him. Highly recommended

Jerry is a cool guy and a good teacher. 4 essays, no tests, one small quiz on logical fallacies, weekly 1-2 page responses to the topic of discussion which count as quizzes, and a group project in which you lead the class in a discussion (easy). He drops the lowest quiz score and allows you to rewrite one of your essays. Overall pretty easy.

Ur stupid if you take this class with anyone but Jerry! one of the best english teachers at MC. funny as hell. Easy class, he makes it VERY fun and interesting. i love Jerry. 3 essays, quizes on the readings and thats it. trust me take him!

Jerry is an awesome teacher. He makes the class go by really quickly. He is very easy to talk to, and is very willing to help. He is open to alternative prompts that you might want to do, and provides useful feedback. He doesn't give busy work, and the only homework assignments are to read the prompts, and to write the papers. I recommend him!

Old funny southern dude who lets you out early. Some people say he's really liberal, but he's ok. Fair grader, don't use the book that much. Just get really good at the reading responses/student led discussions and you'll be fine. Take him.

Hes an awesome professor. Probably my favorite. Hes hilarious. Class isnt hard but you should go to class. You read essays from a book and Have discussions which are easy.He lets you out early. There are only four essays: Narrative, Compare and Contrast, Mini Research, and Term Paper. Fair Grader. Favorite Class this semester. Would take him again!

Mansfield is a really good teacher. Layed back class structure, and he really wants you to succeed. The writer's reference book can be handy, but I got by without it.

I took his MO1C class and enjoyed it so much that I took his Creative Writing class. What a fun class! He is very open with workshopping your piece and gives you great writing tips if you want to ever submit your work. I will miss being in his class...his humor always made me smile :)

I took his honors section this semester and did fairly well. Much of the class is focused around student led discussions, you prepare 1-2 page responses prior to the discussions and basically just debate the essay the whole class. Great teacher, I'd take him again. He's nit-picky about grammar in essays but what English teacher isn't...

Best English teacher I've ever taken. Helps you with writing papers via email, very helpful and clear in class. As long as you read the assigned stories and actually DO the three papers you'll get an A. I definitely recommend him!

JM is a good teacher. If you have a grasp on basic English grammar and can argue effectively, then you will do fine. Follow MLA and complete all assignments on time. Have to read an argumentative progressive book, which you write an essay on. Student-led discussions are once per week in groups of three on the criticisms of famous essays. Word.

This class is extremely easy as long as you do what Mansfield tells you to do. All the instructions you need, he gives you. There are four essays you write along with the final, and every week you do a reading response in the book (all of which are NOT hard to do). You have to work for your A, but Mansfield is definitely one of the best.

Mansfield is a great professor he is really funny and always talks about how he is from the Midwest & will tell stories. Make sure to always to every assignment! It is not difficult to pass you will enjoy him. highly recommended

Jerry is a pretty funny guy. He doesn't give A's out for free but if you do your work and do what he's asking for in your essays its not hard. He does get picky with grading but again, just do what he's asking! If you're confused about anything he is always there to help you. I would take him again. He's a good teacher!

Professor Mansfield is absolutely incredible. The class is made up entirely of essays, none of which are in class. There are one or two quizzes scattered here and there, but no tests. He is a very tough grader; if you're not very good writer, I don't advise you to take this class. I got a high A in the end, but I worked VERY hard. He's great!

Mansfield is tha sh!t. No really he is so awesome. So clear on every assignment, essays are really easy. At the end it was reallt sad to leave the class. I would definitely take english with him again!!!

TAKE THIS CLASS! Mansfield is awesome! It's sad leaving his class because he is so funny and he's real easygoing. A lot of essays, but quite easy. They're off reading assignments you do once a week, so it's not too bad. You won't want to miss a class 'cause he's a great teacher and overall a fun class. Lots of good worksheets for help too!!

Great teacher. Very clear on assignments and what you need to do. He gives good feedback as well. He's pretty easygoing with grading as well. You probably won't need to read the novel he assigns though. He's very nice, except when it comes to people asking stupid questions;that is his pet peeve, so think before you say something. He is a great professor. There are reading response once a week about, really easy to get an A on. Make sure you are there for the reading response disscusion and you participate. He has four essay, the last on is a term paper.If you ever need help with writing, he will be sure to help you when u need it. He is a great teacher!

I really like the guy. He's actually pretty witty and funny and he will engage you and keep you interested. the reading responses he gives you each week are fairly easy, but you can't screw around on his main essays and expect a good grade. Mansfield cares about the subject, and if you show that you do too, you should do fine.

What a great english teacher! So helpful, so funny, and actually made class interesting. You have to write a couple long essays and a couple really short ones but it is really easy if you just follow directions. Easy A and a fun class! Take him!

A real hoot!! Mansfield makes the class something fun and not a chore. Assignments are pretty easy and essays help build your writing skills. The book to read was used but not a lot. We used the text book the most and the handbook is good for later on in the class. CLEAR ARGUABLE SUPPORTABLE.

This is the second class I took with Mansfield, and with reason. He is an incredible instructor. I learned so much, and even though it was in honors class, he made it as easy as possible. Easily one of the best professors I have ever had!

Best english teacher i've ever had and i HATE english. He's very clear and thorough. Helps with any questions after class. He is hilarious. Things you should know about Jerry: he's Southern, he's a liberal democrat, he's an easy grader, and he cares about his students. He makes his views known, but he's not going to dock points if you disagree with him. He doesn't assume that English is your only priority, but he does expect you to put some effort into the class. I enjoy his teaching.

Mansfield is a Great teacher!! Laid back, great teaching methods, and is not an english freak who thinks our world revolves around his class like so many teachers do. The honors course was not hard, just essay writing and one presentation. Really interesting topics, and great discussions. Learn a lot about thinking critically. Take this class!!

Jerry's an awesome guy, but his teaching style isn't for everyone. There is a 1-2 page paper due every week, but that section is only worth 20% of the overall grade. The critical papers are worth 70%, and they suck. Every paper I turned in got an A, though. Don't take him if you're easily offended. Or do, and see what happens :)

Mansfield is one of the best teachers at Moorpark College, in my opinion. His teaching methods are very clear and the material done is very interesting. One group presentation and 4 essays are done the whole semester. Last essay is over the assigned book. Overall, class is very manageable if you prioritize. I would definitely take this class again.

Very relaxed and layed back teacher. 40 page portfolio is due at the end of the class, but if you're into creative writing this shouldn't be a challenge for you. My only complaint is that we spent too much time critiquing and not enough time getting prompts and submitting writing Automatic A if you go to class and complete easy homework assignments

Mansfield is awesome! He's very laid back and funny and is very helpful when it comes to papers if you ask. Discussions were always interesting and as long as you do your work and take his suggestions to heart, you'll do well. A lot of people would ditch class so it was nice to get more personal attention with my work. I'm gonna miss his class!

I have never written one of these but he definitely deserves one! I hate english SO much but he was so funny and made it enjoyable to go to. We only did 3 essays the whole semester and none of them were in class. As long as you read the short stories for the quizzes you'll get 100% on them! I loved him, so I HIGHLY recommend taking him!!!!

Basically this class is what you put into it. From the beginning he says you'll get an A as long as you turn the assignments in. If you're in it for the credits, they're easy to get. If you're in it to be a better writer, Mansfield can give you really constructive criticism. Great class!

Professor Mansfield is a nice guy and a pretty easy teacher. There are about 4 essays and he lets you rewrite your lowest grade. Mr. M is a fantastic guy that entertains his class thoroughly throughout the semester. Although some topics seem to be out of nowhere, we usually get back on track. If you keep up with the reading assignments / short essays that he has you write on these + are capable of writing grammatically and sensibly, you should be able to pull off an A easy

He has a great sense of humor that he shows throughout every class. He only kept us the entire time of class when we had Student Led Discussions, which was once a week. You turn in a small paper about these discussions every week, but they're super easy and easy points. Every essay you write, you get a chance to rewrite. Overall awesome professor!

Great class and interesting assignments on society and pop-culture. How did Hitler convince the Germans? Why are some arguments less effective? He won't teach you how to write if you don't already know how, but you will have an opportunity to develop new skills.

Good teacher, definitely an easy A class if you write all the essays exactly the way he wants them and if you watch the grammar. He doesn't ask for much either. He has a good sense of humor that makes the student led discussions more exciting.

This guy is great. Lectures are engaging and he is quite hilarious. He's VERY liberal and sometimes I felt that might bleed through when he is grading but it wasn't too bad. The book we had to read for honors was extremely teeth-gnashingly annoying if you're not a complete progressive but he is a fair grader and a solid professor.

Great professor. I like to write in my free time for fun and decided to get credit for it. Turn in assignments weekly but not lengthy work, turn it in and get credit. turn in 40 pages double spaced creative work and receive an A.

You have to write a 1-2 page paper every week based on short essay reading. Big emphasis on class discussion, will lose points if you dont participate. He is a little left leaning, but unless you can't handle the occasional Trump joke in class, it's not a big deal. Will teach you how to write a solid essay.

He gives great feedback on essays. 1-2 page papers due every week but they are super doable. Very humorous. Highly recommend.

It is really easy to get a B in his class, if you try a little. If you go over your essay for grammar and that the thesis is good, then you are solid. You have a student led discussion almost, every week that really makes the class fun. Mansfield makes the classes interesting because of his stories and his input in SLD's.

Professor Mansfield is an amazing professor who really cares about his students. He gives you many opportunities to achieve an A as long as you show up and do the work. Probably one of the easiest English courses I've ever taken. He gives you the format that he wants so if you follow it and have a decent thesis. There are reading responses weekly with each student led discussions but you will so used to them that they only take thirty minutes. Funny guy and would definitely take his class again.

Professor Mansfield's class was manageable. There are a total of 5 papers in the course and no final. He is very particular in what he wants so just follow the format he gives you. Your homework is one reading response a week. After doing a couple, you get used to them and they only take 30 mins to do. He allows one re-write. Ask for clarification.

Took him for my first semester at Moorpark. Very hands-off, lets discussion take place between the students. His paper grading is pretty easy, but you have to do things exactly as he tells you. Make sure to listen to his formatting and apply it to each of the weekly Reading Responses. Approachable, good-natured guy, pretty easy class.

Really nice, has a pretty laid back vibe and very much so willing to help with your writing. Just try your best and talk a lot and youll get an A

Only one page of simple writing per week along with four essays throughout semester. Jerry makes the pain of English easier if you don't care too much for the subject. The best part about this class is all the writing is cookie cutter. The weekly papers can be knocked out in 30 min and the essays just take as long as you want. Also, be punctual.

Professor Mansfield is awesome. We had a paper due every week, but they're all short and simple reading responses. The main essays take effort, but I got 95's on all of them, thanks to his clear outlines and expectations. Participation is super heavy, and you're expected to take part in class discussions. They're pretty fun and he's super funny!

Professor Mansfield is one of the best English teachers at Moorpark College! You'll have a smile on your face before you walk into the classroom. His essays are challenging but you're taking an honors class so it should be expected. You talk about politics a lot in his class and he makes the conversations/topics a lot of fun. Definitely take him!

Professor Mansfield is one of my favorite English professors. He really catches your ear in every lecture and brings up very interesting topics to go with every story we read. If you read the stories, you will pass the quizzes. The papers are on the stories you read but they are all interesting and you will have no issue doing them. Participate!!!

Mansfield is really straightforward when it comes to grading criteria. Just follow the rubric and write what he asks for and it's an easy A. He clearly cares about his students and is sometimes funny. Just make sure you participate.

FREAKING GREAT! Really nice guy who knows what he's talking about. Class is always fun and everyone feels accepted and isn't afraid to share their thoughts. Wonderful, creative environment. Really different from any professor. A real gem. :)

2 page reading response every week and 4 essays throughout the semester. If you follow his prompt, you should easily get an A. Make sure to speak up during class cause participation is a big part of your grade. He's a really good English teacher and the content we read in the class are truly fascinating.

Online during COVID. Great professor, not so great class. Very few creative writing assignments. We critiqued other classmates' work in a series of response sheets and discussions weekly. I only got feedback from classmates, never from the professor which is what I really wanted. Honestly, it was 99% busy work but the easiest A you'll ever get.

Mansfield is great, highly recommend M01CH. Expectations for the class are clear, funny guy, makes the class fun. A big portion of the class is student led discussions which are fun/interesting. Honors is pretty much the same as regular except you have to do an extra project at the end of the semester

I normally don't do a rate my professor, but this teacher was so pleasant that I had to write one. He was an amazing and genuine teacher who had clear expectations for his students. His class was an easy A if you follow the structure he outlines for his essays. He gives good feedback and lets you do rewrites.

Professor is very entertaining and the class is a lot of fun! Student led discussions engage the class and make the content interesting.4 papers a semester and two 1-2 page reading responses a week.He tells you exactly what is required on all assignments and gives good feedback.

Prof Mansfield makes his lectures in video form for you to watch. Make sure you watch them or else he'll send a message making sure everyone knows videos are available. The textbook is required, but I got by just fine with looking up the materials on google. I enjoyed the freedom of essay topics a lot!

If you want an A you will get it with ease in this class. He lays out exactly what he wants and grades accordingly. He is a funny guy and his lectures are some of the only ones I can stand to pay attention to. There is one essay due every week that takes less than 20 minutes to write. We had 5 major papers and each were pretty easy.

There are 4 main essays, but if you have a strong base in writing this class will be an easy pass for you. Each week there is an interesting class discussion based on the weekly rating and participation gets you points in class. Weekly essays as well, but if you follow his directions you can get them done very quickly and in one page.

Prof Mansfield is smart, funny & caring. His lectures are generally pretty straight forward, although a lot of the course is student-led discussions anyways. There are group projects here and there but the way he has set up the course makes it easy to break the ice with classmates. I highly recommend taking his courses!

Creative writing isn't a very complicated class, do the work and you'll get credit. Only gripe about this course was the first few weeks were spent actually writing, while the rest were spent looking over classmates' workshop submissions and not writing anything other than responses to those submissions.

Professor Mansfield makes this English course a breeze. With clear expectations, helpful feedback, and plenty of opportunities to improve, I easily earned an A. The weekly readings and essays were manageable, and Unstuck study was a game-changer for my study prep.
