Weed out class. Nonetheless clear teacher. Test problems are from end of chapter
Extremely helpful and accommodating. Does everything he can to make sure students learn the material; but does expect them to know it thoroughly on his tests. Has heavy homework load, but pulls test questions from it. Intends a C to be his class average.
McCoy is one of the great teachers at TU. As previously stated, he is difficult, and his tests will destroy you if you aren't prepared. However, if you read and pay attention in class and do the homework, you will be in good shape to get an A. Excellent teacher.
Mr. McCoy is probably the best teacher I've had at TU. He is really cares about students (even on a personal level, not just academics), and wants all of his students to succeed, but won't be afraid to give deserved bad grades. A lot of work is expected, but you really do learn the material.
not a good teacher at all. allowed students to refer to him as Dr., when does not have a phd--poor form. did not find him to be helpful or understanding at all!
so awesome, I loved McCoy. Defintely loved the class--take it if you can! I'm not that great at math, but I got an A! Good good guy
He is almost the worst teacher I have ever had.
He makes me a tiny bit nervous and intimidated, but he is very clear though his assignments are quite strenuous.
He is really excicted about what he is teaching and is willing to help the students. Don't knock him cuz he doesn't have a PhD. A PhD doesn't mean you are a good teacher or even know the information well. And so what if kids call him Dr. it shows that they respect him even if it is technically incorrect. Physics is Phun!
The material is dificult but he's very helpful and clear. Although the tests are hard, he gives you a pretty good idea of what will be on it.
runs a tight ship in class, and covers the material well; could occasionally do more examples pertaining to a certain topic, but overall very good
I liked him. I was afraid going into his class because everyone said he was really hard. True...he was! But at the same time, he was very committed to leading each student through, and he was very helpful and dedicated in helping me understand. Tests required lots of studying...but they were definitely possible.
McCoy is amazing! He really connects with students and knows how to teach to many learning styles. I wish I could take more classes with him. Yeah, he's tough, but you will learn the material. He is willing to help anyone, even if you don't have him for class anymore. Take his class if possible.
Not worth taking this class with him. Find another teacher if you really want to lean physics. If you just like to listen to the physics book read aloud to you, take this class. If you want to learn, see the real world of physics, and get a job, take from another teacher. PhD's do make a difference. Check the professional world and see.
Runs an extremely highschoolish class. Assigns busywork. Takes attendance. Disgustingly unlike any class of real rigor that you will take in Kep. What others have described as a "tight ship in class" is really just hand-holding of those who should be weeded out and brow-beating of those who treat his class like a (Kep) college class.
He is mean to international students and not really helpful..His exams are very tricky..You are not allow to sleep and talk and eye contact with your friends. He is always late for class. I would not recommand any international students to take this class becoz he does not really care about them. I dont like him at all...gan lin lao shi..
He's a great lecturer, but I wouldn't recommend this class unless you're confident with the subject matter. Considering that this is a Block class, it's quite difficult and the grading is VERY tough. Also, he is ALWAYS late to class and takes forever to return quizzes and tests. Unless you're good at this type of thing, AVOID this class!!!
He's very thorough when explaining the lab and most students don't like that, but he's far more clear than my lecture prof (see Grigoriev). If you did well in PhysI lab and follow his expectations, you can easily get an A.
I couldn't help but notice a fairly stupid comment remarking on the fact that Mr. McCoy does not have a PhD yet he still "allows" people to call him Dr. Whoever said this obviously wasn't listening on the first day of class, because he said "I am not a Dr." and "I do not have a PhD" and "please feel free to call me Mr. McCoy." It was ever so clear.
I am an international student on the comment from whoever that was about him not liking international students I think was very wrong. Mr. Mccoy was always nice and helpful and went out of his way to help me out if I needed it.
Covers the material very well, always in a good mood. Test are average. And no he doesn't like when ppl sleep or talk in his class....omg! thats and outrage!.... anyways, great teacher.
Ignore people that say his tests are impossible his tests are just basically memorizing the homework, know the hw well, and make a good help sheet (which he lets you put what ever you want on it) this class will be easy for you
Provides lots to prepare for tests (homework/quiz solutions and old tests). However, you can tell that sometimes he doesn't know what he's talking about. Also, he's pretty bad at returning graded material in a timely manner..and then makes excuses about why he couldn't get it done.
He only talks about Demos and concepts. He wants you to believe physics actually holds up in real life. He doens't explain how to actually do problems very well at all.
McCoy is very clear about what he expects and willing to help you outside of class. If you do the homework and somewhat memorize it before the tests you'll be fine
talks for a very long time before the lab, but is much more laid back than in his lecture classes.
McCoy is hard - but so is Physics. He is not, however, impossible. Do the homework (on your own), show up to class, pay attention, and go in for help if you need it. Plus study the old exams for the true/false and multiple choice problems. And DON'T CHEAT! Overall he will help you if you'll meet him halfway.
Basically reads the text book. Homework style problems are never worked in class, and hits your grade several times for just being late to class. Starts handing things back late (not entirely his fault) and it snowballs so you dont know how you're doing on hw problems. Avoid, unless you've taken a COLLEGE level physics course prior.
McCoy is an awesome professor! Study the homework problems, if you are having trouble go to him for help (before the day homework is due... there is usually a line on that day), and whatever you do DO NOT cheat. The only thing I didn't really like was taking timed quizzes and no partial credit on test problems. Other than that class is great!
Does not give partial credit on exams! Lectures do not help with homework or exams.
Make sure you sit in front and ask a lot of questions. DO NOT TAKE his class in the summer, because he goes faster than ever and homeowrk problems dont go along with his class notes
He's a nice guy, but his lectures are generally useless with very few examples that are relevant to anything you do for homework and tests. Tests are difficult with NO partial credit and all work must be shown to get any credit. You have a quiz almost every week and your average quiz grade is counted as 1 test. You have 3 tests and a final.
He was a good teacher. Hard tests and you have to show your work and get the right answer to get the points. Also, the questions come exactly from the homework but there are a lot of questions. Tough but a good teacher overall
Good teacher but hard. Tests are exactly from the homework but there are a lot of homework questions. Also you have to show all the correct work and get the right answer (multiple choice) to get the points. He really encourages students to come in to his office and get help.
Professor McCoy is a very good teacher. He works hard for you to understand the material, and has ample office hours to provide. Yes, his tests are difficult, but he tells you what sort of problems are going to be on the test, just changing numbers around. Easily one of the best teachers I've had. Just be willing to put forth effort.
worst professor I have had in Kep, Hands test back late, does not update grades. Test are the HW problems but often are changed slightly (more then just the numbers). sometimes cannot figure out the HW problems in the quiz section. He does not work with students who miss test, even if it is a university sponsored event. Avoid taking him.
Terrible professor. Gives basic answers to broader questions. If you arent doing well in his class he blames it on not studying enough and not his lack of teaching skills or partial credit. DO NOT TAKE EVER
Not a good professor. He is a smart person but cannot teach well. Tests are designed for you to fail, no partial credit; you can find yourself getting a C in the class very fast. Frequently messes up in lecture, cannot explain HW problems well, extremely slow on returning tests. Unfortunately, I have heard he is the best physics professor at Tulsa.
Awesome teacher, very hard, but incredibly helpful. He may turn tests back late, but it is only because he recently has started accepting partial credit, which makes grading much longer. Also, he sometimes can speed through lectures do to the fact that administration had upped the number of chapters to be taught. He has ample office hours.
Really nice guy. I don't like his teaching style. You must memorize how to do the homework problems and when the class is over that's all you will have had time to learn. If it's between him and Edwards TAKE EDWARDS.
I have gone into his office several times with HW problems that he can't even answer. If he didn't have the answer he would be useless. Recently he said that if the volt across a resistor read zero it meant there is no current passing through that resistor. Which is actually why a lot of electricians die on accident. No volt could mean no resistnce
McCoy is very interested in his students and is very passionate about physics. His homework is near impossible, and tests and quizzes are slightly easier than the homework. Make sure you talk to him if you have a problem or need help. He WILL help you if you're willing to find him.
This was the absolute hardest lab I have taken. I complained the whole way through the semester. The weekly write-ups ranged from 15-30 pages. It seemed terrible at the time because it was. However, I don't foresee any issues with writing ever again in my life. I am very glad to have had this lab.
He is a good professor and also a smart person. Even through his HW is too difficult to do, his quizzes and exams will improve your average grade. I am glad have the class.
Doesn't update grades ever, takes weeks to hand back graded tests, not always there for office hours with no warning, unfortunately he is still the best professor here for physics 1.
Careful his Tests are extremely difficult. He teaches pretty well although he's not very thorough and with his homework, quizzes, and tests you need to know the information super in depth.
Simultaneously one of the best and worst professors I have ever had. He is hilarious and loves teaching. He is respected and loved by students, but man does he make you work for it. The tests are killer (about half the class would fail each one). I attended every class and spent days upon end studying and still made my first C ever.
McCoy is a fantastic professor. His class is fairly challenging, but it is entirely manageable if you put forth the effort. He cares a lot about his students and really wants them to learn and do well.
McCoy may be a tough professor but if you put in the work, you will succeed in him class. He is an amazing professor and works hard to ensure you understand physics. Really enjoyed the class and left with the best understanding of physics a professor could give
Mr. McCoy is an amazing professor who has a great passion in teaching to ensure that you understand and do well in Physics, from the very basic concepts. His exams may look challenging in general, but none of them are outside of the classnotes, the homework and the demos in class. Do not expect to get good grades in his class, unless you work hard.
Very easy to get a good grade, lots of grades from homework and other stuff besides tests.
This class is listed as a traditional lecture section, but is in fact an online class. I find it very misleading. Every quiz, homework, and lecture are strictly online material, yet there is an attendance grade for the regular class times which are pretty much useless. TU is really dropping the ball here.
Mr. McCoy is a fantastic professor. The tests and exams are mainly from the homeworks and the class notes. If you don't study you don't pass!!!
He knows his stuff and covers it extensively. If you want an A however, you have to put in the work, do the homework, and show up for the lectures.
I took McCoy's Phys-2053 (Physics I) in the spring. I failed. That being said, McCoy was a phenomenal professor. His grading criteria were clear, the videos he makes are significantly faster than textbook reading, and he has generous office hours. My failure was my own- Prof. McCoy runs a pretty tight ship. You simply have to get yourself onboard.
he thinks that you are only taking his subjects, you will easily find your self failing other classes just to be able to catch up with him.
McCoy is a tough but an excellent professor. His lectures involve demos, in-class discussions, and problems. His exams are pretty difficult but are based on his class notes, homework, and in-class demos. He is also slow on grading. However, he is passionate about physics, cares about his students, and is willing to help if you come to his office.
Well McCoy is as slow as a slot in grading papers. He doesn't really give early feedback. When I took him for physics by the time we were to write the final exam the previous exam wasn't graded, the exam before that wasn't posted online. He should improve by giving the course percentage of students in real time.
Great teacher, material is very clear (asks students to use his own lecture notes). His tests are pretty hard but the quizzes and homework all prepare you for it. Grading is set up where you have a lot of chances to redeem yourself if you mess up. Attendance is taken for a grade though.
He writes notes so you don't have to buy the book. Great person but class is very hard. I've taken physics before and struggled through this class. Takes forever to grade. Between the three physics professors for phys 1 its hard to decide who would of been better. Material on exams and quizzes are problems you have seen before, so that was nice.
The one thing that bothered me was the graded homework. I ended up getting Chegg, which helped me better understand the problems. However, do NOT rely on Chegg just to get the answers. Actually work through everything. The tests are over homework problems and concepts in the notes -- no surprises. Study a LOT and you will get an A.
Goes out of his way to make your day worse. Rude, and makes unnecessary comments.
McCoy is a nice guy. His class is extremely hard, and he expects you to be able to pull knowledge out of nothing. He has a flipped classroom. This does not seem to work for physics. The videos you watch before class do not help with the problems he works in class. The homework is nothing like the example problems and very hard. He is a nice guy
According to syllabus, course designed to prevent most from receiving an A. Failure likely. Uses highly invasive lockdown browser procedure. Apparently he now, during this pandemic, insists on in-person classes and penalizes students who try to go online. Terrible at teaching online. Charges money for notes he made in Word. Avoid at all costs.
Jerry is the type of professor who is going to blame the students when the class average on each lab report and memo is below 60%. McCoy, in his own words, says he expects this one credit lab to take 10+ hours outside of the 3 hour lab, and it is not his fault it is considered 1 credit hour. Ignore him for any class here at Tulsa. Insufferable tbh.
If this is your first time taking Physics I and you get McCoy I am not sure that passing is even possible. McCoy's Physics I class is astonishingly difficult. The notes he uses are good and there are no surprises on the Quizzes/Tests. It is absolutely mandatory to find a study group for the tests. He uses LockDown Browser and it is highly invasive.
McCoy's physics I class is the hardest and worst class I have ever taken at TU. It is the only class I have not earned an A in as well. He writes his tests to take two hours so you legitimately have to get to class at 7:00 am even though class does not start until 8:00 if you want to have any chance of finishing. He is rude, arrogant, and uncaring
Professor McCoy feels like students need to spend 15+ hours a week solely on the lecture. He never explains the concepts that appear on the homework, quizzes, and tests. I would recommend getting a chegg account, because there's zero way I would have been able to figure out the homework without it. Avoid McCoy if possible.
His expectations are completely unrealistic. My other grades are slipping because of how much time I spend watching his lecture videos and doing his homework, and yet I've still got an F in here. There is no curve. I think he's going to fail the entire class. Do not take this class. Do not take this class.
Some of the best straight-A students I know got Cs and Ds. To meet the professor's expectations, you have to know all of Physics 1 already. If you think you can pass, be prepared to sacrifice other grades for the sake of physics. Avoid at all costs.
Avoid at all costs, do not take his summer physics 1 class unless you want the worst experience of your life. His tests are two hours long for some reason and he gives an absolutely absurd amount of graded work outside of the class.
Not a bad professor, but McCoy treats a one-hour physics lab like some kind of senior project. There's a ridiculous amount of work required before, during, and after your weekly lab period. The end of course lab "final" appears to be unique to his specific lab course. Avoid this headache by taking almost anyone else.
My ancedote: at midterms I was en-route to barely earn an A in the class. I was committed, but the mental/physical toll was unbearable and I plummeted hard. McCoy is ruthless with expectations all the way to Pluto. GPA isn't everything, but to illustrate, this is the only class so far I have not received an A in.
Prof McCoy is a good instructor, but this is an inherently tough course, so be ready. You'll spend LOTS of time with this, and it still might not be good enough (40% of class got a D/F). I never found him "rude" as some others claim, and he did offer enough EC at the end to move your grade up if already close.
I took a 8am class but the exam starts at 7am. It's a fall semester, it's really cold outside and you can't get in the classroom until he comes. In first exam, over half of class gets lower than 60 (out of 100). And you don't have a make up. All MC questions are asked for process or no credits. BTW,the 9am class's exam starts at 9:40 and only MC.
This man was tasked with a simple job: teach physics 3. He had no idea what he was doing. He was trying to relearn every single topic while trying to teach it to us. He had no idea what he was doing, but he also blamed us when the averages were well below 60%. He failed people in the middle of a pandemic with a class even he could not pass.
Professor McCoy is the rudest professor that I have met in my 3 years at TU. I have accommodations and he ignored them for months. When he finally acknowledged my accommodations after getting deans involved, he made me start an exam at 4:30 a.m., and there was no way around it. He waited until the second to the last week to input grades.
Physics is a difficult class no matter which professor teaches it. Prof. McCoy truly wants his students to succeed. I would have taken Physics 2 with him, but he wasn't teaching it the next semester. Plan to devote a lot of time to his class. He will help you for as long as it takes, you just have to ask. Participating in class will pay off too.
Makes you buy his own notes, talks down to and degrades his own students, and cant teach well at all. Every bad test score (including a terrible class average) is your fault and not his. Avoid at all costs.
I had him for lab so my experience was different. He was pretty nice and a very engaging lecturer. Labs were very difficult though, and with the pre-lab ASA and the lab memos, it felt like I was doing physics 24/7. Made me never want to take physics again, but most people in my lab section survived. He's a tough grader too.
Terrible person and professor
Do not take any classes with this person. I have no reason to lie to you. Just don't do it. If other sections are unavailable, wait a semester. He clearly has mental issues and you will be his next victim. I'm surprised he lasted this long at the university.
As long as you review the notes and go over the course material, you will pass the class.
He assigns way too much work, changes the schedule so often that I don't know when anything is due and miss deadlines which is very inconvenient. I reviewed the notes, took notes in class, watched the recorded lectures and did the homework but still I feel like I need to beg for a D in this class.
Physics is hard, McCoy makes it harder. 3-5 Pre-Lecture videos a week, each with its own quiz. Homework that takes you hours to finish. I have an A for now, but 90% of my time was committing to his class. His explanations of the HW problems are poor. Disorganized semester schedule, he changed it at least 10 times, making due dates unpredictable
Professor McCoy is overall a very good lecturer and teaches the subject well and is very personable and easy to talk to unlike what other reviews would suggest. However, McCoy does assign a lot of homework and give hard tests, but if you do it and study you will pass. Would primarily recommend him to people who actually need to know physics well.
No other professor I know gives all of his previous tests with solutions, office hours every weekday, and the number of extra credit opportunities that he does. He is a great lecturer and office hours feel like free one-on-one tutoring. Physics is a hard subject, but this isn't high school anymore, you need to put the effort in for an A.
Homework takes hours and gives reworks for almost all exams. The original class average on every exam is usually failing. Overall great guy but treats his classes like it is the only one you are taking. Exams are extremely hard.
Be prepared to teach yourself how to solve these problems. Homeworks were always around 20 questions and each problem had multiple parts. Exams are based on homework so don't rely on Chegg. VERY STRICT GRADER. The only thing that saved me from the class was he allowed you to rework exams and get about half points back if most of the class failed.
Where do I even start... The amount of work he wants you to do is insane. You need to watch a hour long pre-class lecture and take a quiz before each class. Each Thursday there is an exam. each friday there is a 4-5h long homework. And worst of all, since he is the head of the physics department, he is always busy, so forget office hours.
If you pay attention, keep up with the heavy homework load, and study outside of class, you should be fine. McCoy's tests are almost entirely past homework problems or class examples, which makes the class very doable. However, he is very disorganized and is unable to keep up with his own schedule. The class was unenjoyable.
Physics I. I had never taken physics, so his class was hard for me. Exams=hw and class examples. Go to his office hours, he is not as scary as he seems!! Hw took hours, and if you chegg those, you will probably do bad on tests. He cares about you doing good, but don't expect him to do it if you don't put in the work. I wish I was better at physics
Generally really good at explaining physics. Also, he is strict about the way to draw free-body diagrams, which is annoying at first, but it really helps after that. Assigns a reasonable amount of homework and the tests aren't too bad. However, he is sometimes late to class, which can be frustrating.
Prof McCoy is very invested and wants you to be as well; there's a lot of work but all at a reasonable level. Tests are homework problems or in-class examples. An A is very achievable with a bit of work but this is definitely one of the more time-intensive classes.
You will watch and be quizzed on 45-90 minutes of videos before each new topic so that he doesnt have to actually teach the concepts, and the tests draw entirely from in-class problems and homework (2-3 hours per week if you already know the material). Gave 4% extra credit for attending his journal club.
Lectures are the same as the pre class videos he assigns, except he is often unprepared and makes mistakes when doing problems in class which makes one problem take the whole period. His grading is nitpicky, and he can be condescending in class and office hours (if you find him).
Honestly, the best professor I have had in all my college experience. Incredible at giving lectures and keeping your attention in lecture. Pretty tough on grading, but it all depends on how much work you put into studying. Be ready to study lots for this class, but if you go to his office hours he is more than willing to help you if you struggle.
This was a very tough course for me. However, Professor McCoy was great. He had plenty of office hours and was willing to spend quite a bit of time helping students. He assigns quite a bit of work outside of class, but it was helpful for test preparation. Class schedule was a bit all over the place. Despite that, still recommend him for physics.
Takes forever to grade, over a month some times. Don't expect to be happy or have a social life, lowkey almost my 13th reason. Also get ready to be tormented by his inability to schedule.
He's not a bad guy and he's somewhat generous with certain extra credit and things and I'd even go as far as to say ive learned a lot in his class, but his tests are absolutely unbearable and its so hard to get points for no reason.
The class was well structured, but the professor often changed the deadlines, making it hard to track due dates. Lectures consisted of practice problems, while homework assignments were entirely different. both completely make up the exams. The course required self-studying, and the professor struggled to solve some of the homework problems.
If you do not focus 90% of your studying time on this class, there is an extremely high chance that you will not do well, coming from someone who has taken physics before and only done terribly in McCoy's class. I sincerely hope that I never have Professor McCoy again, and I wish his future students the best. Also, he will publicly shame people.
Assigns a large amount of homework. Tests are difficult and uncurved. Schedule changes at least once a week, if not more, which is really hard to keep track of. The videos that he assigns go over exactly what he is going to say in class, but attendance is still mandatory. Spends lecture time doing practice problems that he gets confused over.
McCoy thinks the only important class you take is his. The homework is nothing like what he teaches in class, you will spend so much time outside of class on it. He hates phones and devices in class. He has pre lecture videos that are an hour long every day. Exams are made up of homework mostly. Lots of extra credit. He just can't teach physics.
