Great teacher, laid back, and funny. Take this class!
very hard class, he doesn't explain good.... it is very confusing.
Anybody giving Dr. Newsome a bad review probably shouldnt be taking economics. Its a difficult subject matter but he makes very good sense of it all. Interesting lectures (especally for eco) and a fair grading system, 2 exams and 2 quizes, thats it. I got a B
Mr. Newsome does his best to teach a subject that is not everyone's cup of tea. His course is graded on three tests, and there is no homework or reading necessary!! All three tests are based solely on his notes. He is a big liberal guy though, so if you take him for macro expect some bias toward demand side.
One of the best teachers at the school. Too bad he doesn't teach more subjects.
I took him for both Econ 201 and 202. Like i said before in my other review, he is a really cool guy, funny, and laid back. All his tests are straight from his notes. There's only a quiz, mid term, and a final exam. If you get a higher grade for your final than your cumulative average, he'll give you that for your final grade for the class.
I took this professor in the Spring and loved his class. I was not looking forward to Economics but Mr. Newsome made it interesting and clear. I actually understood Economics and liked listening to his lectures. I will be taking him again for Eco 202.

I took him for Eco 201 and liked his class. I didnt do as well this semester but he still kept it interesting. Hes a nice guy and makes you understand what he is teaching. If your not sure about economics take this guy, he can make it easy for anyone.
veryy nice n easy teacher. and really nice guy, anyone can pass his class.
Excellent teacher. I had him for both Econ 201 and 202. Has a tendency to tell a lot of stories during class and get off topic, but it keeps you interested and awake! He is avery nice man and tells you what is going to be on the test. Lectures from his own notes so you NEED to go to class if you want to do well. I enjoyed this class.
Excellent professor. I had been on the brink of switching majors and I think he finally pushed me over (to ECON that is). Clear, makes it interesting, knows his stuff - no complaints!!!
The best Professor I had durring 2 years at NOVA. He made me change my major to econ and did a good job preparing me for the College of Business at JMU. Just 1 quiz, a midterm, and the final. Plus, you can right a paper for extra credit. If you go to class, pay attention and read the book, you'll get an A or B.
Excellent professor! Very professional. Easy to understand. He has two tests and a quiz. That is all he will grade you on but as long as you go to class and take notes you will get an A. He is very direct and helpful. If you miss a test or quiz, he will let you make it up, no questions asked. One of my three favorite professors ever!
BEST TEACHER HAD AT NOVA! I took both 201 and 202 as the 8-week varieties. (202 then 201 doesnt matter) He was extremely intellegent, approachable and experienced. Stories are all very relative to material and intresting. He's the type of college professor I would try to be one day. TAKE IT!
I had Mr. Newsome for BOTH Econ 201 and 202. He is a great teacher! Very upfront, teaches you exactly what's on the exams and then leaves it up to you to get a good grade. Though he doesn't take attendance you should not miss his class because you'll miss out on important material! I would definitely take him again and recommend him to anyone!
Best professor I have had. Econ is a tough class, but he explains everything so clearly. He is funny and uses tons of real life experiences to illustrate concepts.
I highly recomend this teacher. I have no interest in economics but he made everything easy to understand. He is very flexible and understanding. I got a B with very little effort and without reading a single chapter. Don't miss his class and take notes and you will be fine.
Great teacher, very crystal clear and clearly passionate about the subject. His past experience and expertise on the subject help to establish his credibility as he is not just a college professor, he has worked with the EPA as an economic adviser. Convinced me to become an economics major!
Keeps the class interesting. Very knowledgeable about economics, uses current events for examples and his own personal eperiences and examples. Makes the class interesting and fun/humorous. Class attendance is a must for note taking.
He makes the class interesting and he will explain and explain again until you understand. Take good notes and STUDY and you should pass.
Took Prof. Newsome for Eco 201 and 202 about a year and a half back. took some time to get on here and rate but I take the time out of my day 2 years and one school later to say that this teacher is a must have in your college experience. I cannot begin to state how he is the best teacher I have ever encountered and you HAVE to take his class!!!!
Professor Newsome is very passionate about Economics and brings it to a level for all to understand. I suggest that you have a couple of sharp pencils, loads of paper, a ruler and/or graph paper--he doesn't quote the book(s) much and preaches from his economics bible. He is by trade an economist and shares many life experiences A+++ professor.
Good teacher! He knows exactly what he's talking about and shares his experiment from working for the government with you and very helpful! Take good notes and study and you will pass his class!!!!!!
One of the Best at Nova! He's does a fine job of breaking everything down and making sure you understand! Easy class/ Easy A! You won't be dissapointed!
Great professor, really made a otherwise boring subject interesting and relevant to learn about. I've already booked one of his classes for 202 and cant wait! As for studying, definitely do it. There were some people in my class that clearly had no interest/werent serious in learning and they were rewarded..
Come to class and take the notes, you'll be fine. Didn't study much at all and got a B
I took both Econ 201 & 202 with him He make sure you understand take good notes and save your quizzes He is always available if you need him. Take his class and you will not regret it. I took him this spring
very easy !!! love his class he will make sure you understand
Professor Newsome was excellent! hes my favvvv!!! Curved tests and you will learn a ton. I had a great time in this class. Just take the notes and you will do great on the test. Not an easy A but if you pay attention youll do great.
Professor newsome makes Econ so easy. He uses real life examples and he's super funny. I never even bought the book and I have an A. As long as you show up to class and take notes and study them before quizzes/tests you shouldn't get below a B.
He's the best professor ever. He's so nice. Easy on grading and also soooo funny. He always curve test and give extra credit questions. My favorite professor. I got A in this class and it was so easy and fun.
He is a fantastic professor. He helps you understand the material in a way that is relevant to today's times. No homework and no textbook, but lots of notes. All exams are based on the notes and only on what he lectures. Highly recommend him!!
His class is extremely easy if you take all the notes. The textbook is not necessary for this course which is a plus. All of his quizzes/exams are based on his lectures/notes. So if you study off his notes you shouldn't have trouble passing. There's 4 quizzes total but we didn't take the last one. And there's a midterm and final.
His class is easy enough if you come to class and take all his notes. The book is not used much, he only uses the info he writes as notes for the test and nothing else. It is an econ class, so its not that easy in the first place, but if you take notes and pay attention, you will do just fine.
His class is easy if u come and take notes.u dont need book at all. all the quizes and exams are gonna be from notes so make sure u take those. his lectures are intresting and he is funny guy too. i would say to take this class, u just need little effort but c'mon at least u gotta do that. I got A in this class so its not that hard
TAKE NOTES!!!! Sadly I slept through most of his classes becuase they were right after lunch. However, I studied the nots he wrote on the board, and I got a "B"! If you need an "A" dont sleep and I'm sure you'll get it!! Great professor!
Come to class and take the notes! If you have the notes that's all you need! Some lectures are decent as he incorporates real life situations to econ, others are a snooze!I've taken other Econ professors at nova and let me tell you, Newsome is the only one I would recommend!
As long as you attend class and keep your notes you should do well in his class.
Mr. Newsome was great. He was fun and laid back. As long attend class and write down everything he puts on the board passing his quizzes is easy. He takes everything directly from the slides and is accommodating if you miss a quiz/exam. The quizzes and exams CAN be challenging, but again, as long as you have good notes, it should be no problem.
He is super great economic professor. He makes everything clear, and provides what would be on the exam. Study everything on your notes and you'll get A definitely.
Excellent teacher, his lectures are always interesting and informative. As long as you show up and take notes you should do fine in the class. The exams and quizzes are taken directly from the notes so attendance is pretty important in this class if you don't want to get lost.
Very great teacher. Interesting, teaches well, and is fair with grading. Pretty easy as well
Great professor! He is very passionate about Economics and is excited to share his passion with his students. The lectures are straight forward and he gives you everything you need to know within the lectures. He uses questions from previous tests on the final exam. He took the time to make sure everyone understood the material.
Don't bother buying the book, he uses his own notes for his lectures. Not an easy class.
Great professor! I learned alot. Be sure you study your notes he gives you same with the handouts as well. The book tells everything you need to learn! Be sure you study for the final cuz that matters the most on your grades! Highly recommended for those who want to take economics!
His class was very easy. Not much homework BUT his tests was very tricky. He used only his notes in his tests BUT if u don't know anything about Macroeconomics you will need a book to read. The notes won't help u a lot. You have def. study for his class and u have come to class. He asks a lot in the test what was covered in class. Good luck.
GREAT TEACHER! I took him in Econ 201 and 202! Great teacher! Gave you all the information, used powerpoint. Very helpful and tentative. He wants you to pass and is very understanding!
Good at keeping your interest during lectures. Gives extra credit on exams and curves the exams. Does not use the book so do not need to buy it.
Mr. Newsome is an amazing economics teacher. He does not use the textbook, everything you need are in the lectures so you MUST take good notes. Therefore, you can't miss a class and don't be late; he hates it when students saunter in during lecture. He knows this subject and will tell interesting stories that highlight the economics he is teaching.
He is an amazing professor. He uses real life examples frequently to make the class easy to understand. Do not buy the book because the quizzes and tests are all purely from the notes taken in class. He lets you decided whether or not to take the final. Ex: your average is 82%, final test grade is 93%, he gives you a 93% for the class or vice versa
I can't find a word to describe professor newsome. He truly loves Econ and wants everybody to understand it. I can't imagine not taking econ with him because he uses his past experiences to help us understand concepts. He doesn't like it when people are late or leave in the middle of class. I wouldn't blame him. His lectures are to great to miss.
Take him! Econ isn't the easiest subject but he's a master at getting the concept easy to understand. All you really have to do is attend the class, pay attention & take notes. I got an A in both 101 & 102 without having to use the textbook. It's really not hard as long as you pay attention, which is easy since his lectures aren't too boring.
His class is an easy A. As long as you go to class, pay attention to lectures and take notes, You will get an A. He brings the real world into his lectures which makes them very interesting. Definitely recommend him.
Good professor. His class is easy as long as you do the work.
If you don't show up to his class, you aren't going to pass. Tests and Quizzes are entirely off of notes given in class. Do not buy the textbook, because you won't need it. There were only three grades for the entire semester (one quiz, one test and a paper) so studying is imperative because every grade counts.
I am going to do the double major in ECO because of him. Show up to his class, and take notes, he will mention all the important things about the test. Tests and Quizzes are entirely off of notes given in class. Do not buy the textbook, because you won't need it. There were only three grades for the entire semester
Show up to his class, take notes, copy everything what he writes on the board, read notes for two hours before the exam and your good. Tests and Quizzes are entirely off of notes given in class. Do not buy the textbook, because you won't need it. There were only three or four grades for the entire semester
At JMU during the year but decided to take a summer econ class. He's a great teacher and gives easy to understand, thorough lectures. He even works in stories from his own life into the lecture, which makes it more interesting. Actually makes me intersted in economics---in my opinion he's better than a lot of JMU Econ professors. Def go to class.
He knows what he's talking about for sure! Explains everything well enough to understand. Take the notes, do the HW and extra credit because ti will really help you out if final grade isn't too hot! Test are tough/tricky. But he is a very good professor! Take him for economics he knows it like the back of his hand!
Mr. Newsome is a great teacher he really knows what he is talking about. He makes the material understandable and very clear! Notes will help a lot but study study study for test! They are tricky! If your taking ECO take him!! He has a lot of hands on exp. with Economics!
Two quizzes. Two Hybrid Papers which consist of one paragraph reviews for three YouTube videos. Overall, a very easy class. He usually dismissed class early
One of my favorite professors I've ever had. Incredibly interesting lectures that he is able to tie into his life experiences. You're going to have to show up every class to get a good grade, but all of his tests are from the notes so just copy them and you're good. I didn't buy the textbook and I was fine. If you like econ TAKE HIS CLASS!
He is a great professor. I took him for Econ 201 and Econ 202 for eight week classes. He does not give out homework. Just 2 Exams and one quiz. He writes all his notes on the board, so if you miss class, you either lost it or get it from someone else. He is very understanding and really loves what he does for a living. You can tell the way he teach
Does not use textbook, quizzes and tests are all based off of material taught in class. I only had 2 quizzes and two tests, midterm and final. Really easy for me, I got nothing under an A all year. Definitely need to show up to class, as all material tested is based on what is in class, no textbook.
Def makes Econ interesting w/ all of his stories and sense of humor. Tests are straight forward. Skip a class you'll be lost & may not understand the notes. Tests are straight from notes & notes only. Gives you an extra credit paper at the end, DO IT! 2 quizzes & 2 tests for semester but only keeps final grade if its higher than class average.
Professor Newsome is amazing. His lectures are interesting and fun. You copy down the notes he puts on the board- and his quizzes and exams come directly from the notes you take.
If you're taking Prof. Newsome, you better be ready to take down notes. This whole class is based on his notes. You'll barely use your textbook and his notes are really good, and there'll all you need to get an A. If get an A on the final, regardless of what you got in your assignments and homework, your overall grade will be an A.
My first college class with Prof. Newsome and this set a very high bar for other teacher. It's been around a year since I took his econ 201 and 202 classes. Best teacher by far. Show up, take notes, study 30mins before a test and you're golden.
Awesome professor! Sometimes I find myself wishing the class was longer so I enrolled in his micro class next semester.
Does not ever reply to emails. Tests are the hardest tests ever, even if you take notes and attend every class. Do not understand why he teaches the way he does. It'd also be nice if he could respond to emails.
Professor Newsome is great! The test comes straight from the lecture. Come to class, listen, and take notes you will do fine. No worries! He has a lot of funny stories in his lecture.
He his great because he teach with knowledge from his experiences, but his stories are really looong! that the class gets boring, and you'd be sleepy, and just wish the class would end quickly. He posts his notes online. Tests are based from notes. Attendance is not mandatory. Give your best at the final because thats basically your course grade.
He worked around the obstacles he had with IT issues he was having. And also this was his FIRST 8 week hybrid class & he wasn't too happy about it because he felt that he needed more face to face time with us. But got a good grade on my mid-term & final. Really good professor---take notes!!
He thinks that everyone who takes his class can learn the notes and be able to apply to real world questions on his tests. I study for his test for a week and still did bad because his test are nothing like the notes. He does not give homework or class work to help your grade. Extra credit isn't worth the points.
Great professor, and lectures are not only interesting, but extremely useful in the real world. Also he is hilarious. No homework, and as long as you actually pay attention to his lectures and TAKE NOTES, you will definitely pass.
Professor makes his lectures easy to understand and interesting. The tests are all from his notes and they are easy if you take all the notes and show up to every class. There is no homework. He tells hilarious stories about his life during lectures. Will take all my economics classes with him.
Professor Newsome is an overall great guy. His lectures tend to run long, but they are interesting. He teaches economics in a way that's easy to understand and in terms that are easily applicable to real life. If you're not one to listen to lectures and take notes this class isn't for you. However if you are willing to do the work, it pays off.
Hes a nice guy, he does want to students to do well. But I would not recommend taking his class. He doesnt post any grades on blackboard, you have to go to him and ask. Even though yes the quizzes, and midterm are take-home. If you have any questions for him he does not answer emails ever. There is absolutely zero communication.
Professor Newsome is an economics teacher with a strong foundation in the subject. He is one of those people who tells a bunch of stories in class, show up and you will pass 100%.
Relatively easy B and if you put in alittle more effort its an easy A. You show up take notes dont go to sleep dont leave early show up on time, you should get an A. taken him twice now. he gives you extra credit questions on exam worth three points and curves it by 8-10 points most of the time. overall a effective professor, would recommend.
Do NOT buy textbook. Attendance is necessary, you need all the notes. Theres a small amount of grades, but this professor is clutch and you will be presented with lots of opportunities to raise ur grade.
Professor Newsome is a good teacher, however, I had him for a 6 week class that was 3 hours & 45 minutes, twice a week and he spent the majority of class telling stories. The stories he tells are supposed to be about the topics that were learning but he gets way off track and one story leads to another and then to another.
I took Professor Newsome during the summer and I really enjoyed his class. There wasn't a lot to grade but probably because it was a summer class. The final was worth 40% of your final grade so you had to do well in that but he gives you an opportunity for extra credit. I liked hearing his stories, especially since, the class was 3hr long.
Attend Class. Take notes on lectures. Tests are based only on what he teaches in the lecture. Very easy. It's an effortless A. Will take him for Eco202 too.
Such a great professor, his lectures are very interesting and he will 100% tell you what to expect on quizzes and tests
Professor Newsome's class is very stress-free. His lectures are long but interesting and he is not a tough grader. I took his Macroeconomics class and I have registered to take his microeconomics class next semester as well. Highly recommend.
I took Jerry Newsome for ECO201 online because of COVID. His lectures are interesting and he has a lot of good stories. His grading is lenient, everything is open note. I would definitely recommend Jerry Newsome!
Professor Newsome one the nicest professors I've taken for both ECO 201 and 202. Makes lectures very easy to understand and very easy quiz. Also if your final grade if higher than your class average, the highest score is the class score. If you had a 70% in the class but 90% on final then 90% would be final class grade.
Professor Newsome clearly cares about his subject and brings lots of real world examples into his lectures. I went into class not super interested in economics but he always made it interesting. He is a fair grader and puts all of his notes online to access. Quizzes are mostly on lecture material so review it before hand! I didn't really use book.
I had professor Newsome for both econ 201 and 202. He truly cares for his students by trying to put himself in our shoes. His class is super easy it is very lightweight work as long as you pay attention to his lectures
Prof Newsome is great! He knows what he's talking about and he explains it well. I took him during corona and it was a hard, we didn't take our first quiz til around the fourth week (8 week course). He also wasn't very tech savvy, we didn't get the code for our online textbook til the last week. whole grade was based on 5 quizzes and 1 extra credit
Professor Newsome is AMAZING!! By far the best teacher I've taken so far at NOVA. He is so kind and his lectures are very specific and not hard to understand. He gives out three quizzes and a final exam. Grading is pretty easy and he gives out an extra credit essay if you need to boost your grade. EASY A :))
THE BEST professor i have ever had.
10 out of 5... Easily one of the best professors I've ever had at nvcc. Such a shame he retired because I wanted to take him for ECO202, professor Newsome you're the goat, and wish you a happy retirement!
