This guy has easy to understand test because he gives study guides that really help you know what you need to know. Other than that, his teaching is really unclear, wacked and confusing. You will sordof have to figure stuff yourself or through others.
he is helpfull eventhought his teaching is kind of unclear. however, if you read textbook, it willl be easier. oveer all,his explaination is so so ( given out a lot of note)
He has a sense of humor. Hard to understand his lecture, but easy tests as long as u study the review sheet. I'll take him again if i have to.
he was a little hard to follow but besides that everything was cut and dry. tests and quizzes were easy if you went to class regularly.
Dr. Poteat is an excited professor about what he teaches. He spreads the excitement throughout the class. He is willing to assist students with all kinds of help. He tries to make sure everyone understands the material and that makes a good professor.
Dr Poteat need to put his thought all together. He is not clear, confused us and expect to have good test grades.Yes he gives the study guide , bt some stuff that he brings in the test are all new.
Dr. Poteat is a good teacher. He can be difficult to get sometimes but he REALLY tries. He is more than willing to help anyone who needs it and will spend extra time on a subject if people are having a hard time.
i understood no chemistry in high school and i went into this final with an a in the class. he really cares about what he teaches, but sometimes he does get ahead of himself. he gives some take home quizzes.
He is the best prof.
Doesn't know how to teach Chemistry. Continues to jump ahead of what he should teach. Half of the class already dropped but he doesn't care. Take him if you want to fail and hate chemistry.
I think the best name to represent this teacher is "King of Chaos", he is not able to express any concept easily and he is not able to answer any question. Get this course if you don't want to understand chemistry and consequently get a poor gra
Great professor who knows his stuff. People who have given him a bad rating most likely have done it because they refuse to make the attempt to understand or ask questions outside of class. Poteat will ALWAYS help you understand something if you go to h
If you are a teacher yo uneed to know how to be one, he is very intelligent because he knows a lot of chemestry , but have no idea how to teach and is not helpful at all.
He jumps around, doesn't have any clue on how to teach the subject. I hope it finishes soon. Get the class of Sakuta if you want to understand chemistry
I wish I could go to another class. This teacher makes his tests very hard. Most of the class is with a C only one A on more than 25 people!! Get this class ONLY if you have learned well chemistry in high school.
He's a horrible teacher. Doesn't know how to get the material across to his class. Very disorganized and brings his personal issues to class. Halfway thru the semester, he still hasn't gotten it together. He grades fairly, but always tests ahead, so you better read ahead!
He is the absent minded professor. However, he will take the time to explain anything you ask him. He's above average for a professor, and you will learn alot from his lab.
Don't take this teacher if you want to learn about Chemistry. He is not clear in what you want to study, his tests are very hard compared to other teachers. A student can come out from his course only with B, C or worse.
Maybe he is tired of teaching. He just doesn't know how to convey the information in a clear and simple way. Jumps ahead continously. Take this course only if you already studied chemistry before and maybe you get a B or C. He never review in class for the exams, so you never know what to study.
Nice guy. Sometimes he is difficult to understand, don't be afraid to ask questions. Liberal with grading and ALWAYS hands out study guides. Not at all impossible to get an A, IF YOU TRY.
He is a very nice teacher, but he does not know how to apply the information smoothly. I had a difficult time in his class because i was already bad at chemistry and all i needed was a teacher who will teach and for me to be able to understand. But in his class, its totally impossible to pass.
Well,I had him for environmental science at Decatur Campus and he was excellent at what he does. He is a very smart guy. If you got something wrong, he will let you know what the right answer is instead of just simply marking stuff wrong. Unfortunately, he has a stuttering problem.Great Teacher!!!
I thought Dr. Poteat was fair in his grading, but his lectures were very difficult to understand. He was nice enough to stay after class and help if needed, and he gave detailed study guides for tests, but his lecturing style was hard to follow. Take only if you have a basic understanding of Chem.
When I went to him to ask some materials that I did not understand, insted of helping me and motivate me, he made me fell horible. He made me feel SO STUPID. I left his office almost crying. I had to hold my self not to cry infront of him. I never again ask him anything. I felt insolted and so low!
Very Smart. Organized lectures. Makes Chemistry interesting.
I had never had any chemistry before Dr. Poteats class and got an A. He was very helpful and made sure to keep pace with the class. I went to him several times for help and he was great! Definitely knows his stuff.
Dr. Poteat is unreasonable in his grading methods he counts entire problems wrong if most of it is right. He wastes half the class period going over only a few problems. Also he sometimes goes around the room asking the students why are they doing bad in his class, instead of teaching. I do not recomend taking Dr. Poteat.
I thought Dr. Poteat did a very good job of teaching. I had never had any chemistry and made an A. It was helpful to read the book before his class, because sometimes his explanations were confusing.
Dr. Poteat knows what he is teaching and teaches it well, even though his tests and quizes are definately hard. But you come out of the class actually learning the material, not just trying to pass his class. Do the assignments and you'll be fine.
very unorganised and confusing for new chemistry students
Very knowledgeable, but very condescending. I am an A student in all my science classes, but he treated me like an idiot every time I would ask a question. He spends lots of time on theory rather than showing the class actual examples of problems. He treats the class as if we are hopeless, except for a select few.
If you don't have a decent chem background, I can understand why his class would be hard. His methods of explaining things aren't great. He's kinda absent minded. His tests were pretty tough. I had to study a good bit for his class, but ended up with an A. I think a lot of people didn't do so well though.
If you don't already know everything he is supposed to be teaching you then you are treated as an idiot. He actually said that we should be dpening 20 hours a week on chem! The lab is an obsecene amount of work for 1 credit. He expects us all to be at a level of of Texas A&M chemists. Quizzes are insanely difficult. Take anyone else for lab.
Probably the best Organic teacher GPC has to offer. Don't listen to other raters. Most of them can't even spell words correctly. He is very inspiring for a student who is PreMed/Pharm/Dent and prepares you well for you future classes. He is a bit tough, but only slackers need to worry. For those who are determined to succeed in science, take him.
Yep, dat's right. Dont listen to the other raters. If u want to learn Organic, take Dr. Poteat. He really makes u understand Organic, and it really helps for those who are majoring in Chemistry related major (Pharm etc.). The best Chemistry teacher that I have ever had. Love him so much!
He really does understand and know his stuff, but when you have to read everything out of the textbook, and come to class prepared to ask questions. You will come to class with a lot of questions, especially when you have to read the text before you can understand any chem. Okay, not easy.
He is a great teacher who enjoys what he's teaching. It's not an easy class, I mean it's chemistry!! Be prepared and do your homework and problem sets and you will be okay!! He is always willing to help you if you have any questions so dont be afraid to ask!
Dr. Poteat is knowlegable and concerened about being a good professor. BUT, I do not recommend him. He does not prepare effectively before class or lab, He speaks to the class as though to fellow Dupont chemists with a professional knowlege base, he does not go over or even give back problems before the tests, and he jumps around in the book.
Let's see. He does not teach, he explains very little and what he does explain is completely lacking in clarity. He show up late and wastes your time with pointless exercises that are not conducive to learning. Avoid this guy and take Burkart or Campbell if you don't want to waste time or money.
It's an easy class because he grades very easy, however he is unclear in his teachings. If you are taking a lab at the same time stay away unless you have him for lab too. You'll be completely lost!!
Good teacher if you ask him questions directly. I never bought the textbook or lab manual and got straight A's in chem2641 and 2642(w/ both labs). Some complain that he jumps around too much, didn't hurt me b/c i had no reference point(textbook). Easy A if you get to know him and ask him questions. Just don't expect it all to be handed to you!
he is very smart and knows the material very well. at times he can be unclear and bring up topics not related to the lecture but over all he is a good teacher. he wants everyone to understand and do well in his class
Very hard to understand in class. He jumps around when he speaks, so you basically have to teach yourself the material after class. He is practically useless and irritating to listen to . I would not advise anyone who wants to learn about chemistry to take this class because you will learn nothing!
Do not take this class! He is very hard to understand and is not very helpful. He does give out study guides which help but basically you have to teach yourself when you get home.
This professor is great. He is very patient and helpful. The only problem with this Chemistroy course is the material itself. Chemistry is not an easy subject, so be prepared to study! The tests are not extremely difficult. I put less than 10 hours into studying for the first test and still made a B. I don't see why people are criticizing this guy.
donot take this class he doesnt teach doesnt teach, expect the students to know everything
Nice guy, but very challenging. If you have taken chemistry before and have to take addtional chemistry courses, you'll benefit from this class. But if no chemistry background and need B for nursing program, try somebody else.
Instead of helping his students, he only makes you feel bad. I went to ask him a question and he did not help me or other times he said he did not have time. He is very unclear in his lectures and just AVOID him.
chem is a hard class, there are no easy teachers. His tests are hard, but he curves the grades.
His lectures are very hard to follow. When you ask him a question, he answers with a question instead of helping you understand the answer. He likes to put things on tests that are not in homework. Would recommend someone else.
Says textbook not hard enough, better know chemistry going in or you'll be totally lost. Many who tried to stick it out ended up so frustrated they were either changing majors or leaving scholl altogether.
I should have ran out the first day of class when he said the text was too simple and that no college level chem class is introductory. He way over-complicates the material and leaves you totally confused. Many who stayed failed or barely passed. Only those who took chemistry before did OK.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHERS!!!! I SHOULD DROP THE CLASS WHEN I HAVE A CHANCE!!!! HE DO NOT TEACH YOU ONE THING!!! ALL HE DOES IS TELL YOU " TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN TO THINK AND TRY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. YOU MUST KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!" YOU NEED TO PRACTICE AND PRACTICE OMGADDDD HE DO NOT TEACH AT ALL PLEASE I'M WARNING YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER PLEASE!
He is not a bad guy but he doesn't know how to teach. He is very unclear and hard to follow. However, if you do study at home on your own, you'll be fine because his tests aren't really complicated or tricky, just the basic material from the chapters. That's what i did and got an A on each test.
I don't see why people are criticizing the guy. he is the best science teacher ever. his class is so easy!!!! his labs are ok. I got an A in that class and I never openned my chem book. Just read the powerpoint and you will be fine. his tests are so easy!!!
Great teacher!!! He is the best science teacher I've ever had. He tries to make you think and understand better. He is really helpful, go to his office often and talk to him. His test is not hard if you study well. I wish that I could take him again next semester..
Chemistry is not an easy subject no matter who's teaching it, but I would definitely take him again if I could! He breaks the material down so that you can easily understand it. Just do all the hw probs, come to class and take notes and you should be fine!
This professor is really good. He explains things and goes over any questions you have. Chemistry is not an easy subject so of course you need to study. As long as you study you should get a good grade. He's not hard and doesn't make test tricky you just have to understand the material.
I dreaded chemistry but have found Dr. Poteat to be so helpful. He involves the class in discussions and seems to be a good 'read' on if his students are 'getting it'. The tests are straight forward-no tricks. He seems to geniunely want you to learn the material-not just memorize it. I've already signed up for chem 1152 with him!
I had never had Chemistry before. Even in a summer class that was extremely fast paced; if we were struggling he would go over it again. His homework and reading are very reasonable. When you go to office hours he is very approachable and will work with you. Gave test reviews and expected you to know it. Great teacher will take again!
I don't understand why people are giving him such a hard time. I am in his 1151 class and so far, I like him a lot. In lectures, he really teaches, wants us to understand the material and doesn't make you feel bad if you ask questions. It is only the 3rd week of school but I can tell I am going to do well in his course. He really knows Chemistr
Prof Poteat is awesome! Chemistry is hard... so you have to work at it, but he really wants you to understand what is going on. The homework is helpful and very reasonable and you can visit his office to have him explain stuff. I'm going to try my hardest to take chem II with him next semester
If you make the exercises and take his notes.. you will be pass the class fine.
Dr. Poteat is a great Chemistry teacher. Go to class, take notes and be active in the class, and do the homework problems and you should be fine. You can go to his office at any time and he is much obliged to help you out if your are stuck. He really breaks down the material so everyone can understand it. Take him if you want to do well!!
Dr. Poteat is a great professor! The subject is not easy, but he will always make himself available if you need help. He genuinely cares about his students and takes his job as an educator seriously, not just collecting a paycheck. His study guides for exams are very helpful and there are no surprises during the semester. I would highly recommend!
His first time teaching this course, so I have to give him a little bit of a break. He thinks his order is better than the book so READ the book BEFORE you come to class or you won't have a clue & then he will make you feel stupid. Test are easy once you understand him. I'd take Namura. I don't recommend Poteat. He says "right" about 150/class.
All I have to say is unclear, if you ask him a question he mumbles or doesnt answer and he tries to make people feel or look bad, I had to sign up for chemistry at the last minute and wish I could have signed up for an other teacher because this one is horrible!!
this prof. can NOT teach. he is disorganized and is incapable of explaining any sort of concept with clarity. he mentions pointless things during his lectures that are completely irrelevant to the subject. if you plan on taking him, you better be prepared to study outside of class and teach yourself.
Organic Chemistry is such a challenging course, however, Dr. Poteat tries his best to teach it well. You WILL have to study a lot outside of class, it's chemistry! But his study guides are extremely helpful and there are absolutely no surprises on the test. I took him for 1151 and I have him now for 1152, he is a great, organized professor.
STAY AWAY! I am a student with a 3.7 so I am not a slacker. He has no concept of teaching. He instills an attendance policy which states he may fail you for missing more than 4 classes even if you have an A. He can not answer questions in class because he states his lecture will break down. No questions?? More than 1/2 dropped his class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!, he grades every little detail, My lecture teach is great, He is a GPA Killer!!!! I had a 3.8 until his lab, If you must take chemistry WAIT Til there are more opening, CAUSE IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!
Dr. Poteat does know his chemistry and is an organized guy, but he's not that great at teaching the stuff to people who aren't chemists. VERY efficient. Had him for lab and he's a very detailed grader but fair. No surprises on the quizzes. Do the work and you should get an A.
I took him for lab. He is fair, but sometimes does not understand that most of us are not chemists by nature. He grades fairly, but only if you show you are trying and putting forth an effort. Follow safety guidelines and come to class prepared, he does not waste time once class starts. Quizzes are hard, so study. Better than most lab proffesors.
For survey 1, he's a great professor. Do the homework problems and do them again in the days leading up to the test. Tests are VERY conceptual, not just memorizing. You have to understand the material and there's things on tests that are only covered in lecture, not in the book. Nice person, go to his office if you have questions.
Not good for 1152, great for 1151. Took him for both and although he's a really smart guy I took '52 when it was the second time he taught the course, and it was a TON of work to get my A. You have to really understand the material and it's important that you go to class, for every boring minute there's an essential minute.
He is horrible! Stay away from this guy or else ur putting your GPA at risk! I only took his class because he was the only prof teaching this summer. He is a strict grader he will take major points off for the simplest mistake such as grammar. He doesn't explain things well and always tells you, "if your going to the med field you better know this"
He's honestly not that bad. I got a C and didn't put very much into the class. READ AND DO THE PROBLEMS and you will be fine. He isn't the best at explaining but he is very smart. If you study a lot you will do fine. It's not an easy A, but it's Chemistry.
Run!!!! As far as possible. I am an honors student and this is the first class I have ever dropped. Maybe he is a good chemist, but teaching is not his forte. He is doing a grave disservice to students.
I am currently taking Dr. Poteat for Chem 1151 lab and he isn't THAT bad. He does take off points for silly mistakes, but he knows what he is talking about and is willing to help. I will say that he does expect you sometimes to just KNOW everything, but overall not too bad of a professor.
*WARNING*This man is INCOMPETENT! Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take this professor's class. He should NOT be in front of ANY classroom teaching ANYONE ANYTHING! He is often late arriving to class, he rambles and wanders and totally loses the class, he is petty with taking off as little as one-tenth or one-third of a point for the silliest things. RUN!!
Thinking about taking him this summer but could someone give a idea on what his tests/quizes are like? Multi/choice, fill in or short essay? Thanks!
I took him for chem 2111 lecture and he is okay. During his lecture he doesn't move on until everyone understand the material which kind of put him behind the schedule, and started to rush through the end of the unit, but the last part that was rushed is like 5 pts on the overall test. He is a nice guy and i would take him for chem 2642 lecture.
Read the book, do the problems he gives, do the problems he gives and do the problems he gives and you'll get an A like me. :)
worst teacher ever! doesn't know how to teach, mumbles alot, and the questions on the test look NOTHING like the problems in the book, STAY AWAY!
To be fair. He is very reasonable grading you. He does assume that you have studied the course material assigned prior to that lecture, so if you come in unprepared it may be difficult to follow. He is a very nice person, but he really doesn't teach that well. He mumbles a lot and often doesn't give a straight answer to questions. I got an A though
Dr. Poteat is a nice man. That being said, his class is not the easiest. He obviously knows a lot about the subject material, but it doesn't always translate in the classroom. He grades on the hard side, and I felt anxious and frustrated often during my lab. I did end up with an A, but I was surprised.
Took the online summer course and do have to say it's very intense: you must read, but the material is clear and direct. Dr. Poteat answered emails quickly and was always able to provide great feedback. There were more than enough point opportunities to make an A even if you screwed up on a test or quiz even though I made a B.
To be successful in this class you must read the assigned chapters and do the practice problems. He provides clear study guides on exactly what to expect on exams. He is really quick to respond to e-mails. He also gives extra credit at the end. Overall, he provided a clear guide for learning chemistry in the best way. Highly recommended!!
he is HORRIBLE....If u want an F than yah u can take him. he does not teach at all. he expects u to know everything
He is a very difficult professor. I took him during the summer and I almost died. I would not wish him to teach my worst enemy, he is horrible at explaining things and don't expect him to really try to help you. If you have absolutely no life.
He's really confusing and when you ask a question, he never gives you a direct answer. He is somewhat easy on the grading of lab book reports. I made a B, but having a good lab partner helps too.
One of the best teachers I have ever had (and I have a graduate degree, too). Dr. Poteat really knows his stuff and can teach it. I love his study guides - they really helped prepare for the test. If you want an easy A, why are you in chemistry? If you want to really LEARN this stuff, he's the professor for you!
He can not teach at all, worst teacher i have ever took. he teaches nothing useful, and nothing like his tests. honestly, this guy is just too smart, and cant send the lecture clearly at all. so from a brother don't think about taking him.
Can be a little difficult to understand but overall I think an excellent professor. Sometimes he doesn't understand a students confusion or can add to it with less than clear details. But fair, do the work and you will get a solid grade. Don't do the work and well, it's chemistry so what do you expect? I would take further classes from him.
I do not recommend him, at all! He doesn't teach very well. He expects you to know the chapters before class, but barely teaches them. Jumps to one topic to another. His tests were very hard!!! He will give easy examples in class, but when it comes on the test, nothing you've ever seen!
Dr. Poteat is a nice guy. If you participate in class and genuinely try - he will help you out. He isn't very clear on explaining things but he grades pretty easy
Professor Poteat's online class was not brutal,im my opinion. He gave you everything you needed to know for his tests. He gave you study guides before the test and they were very helpful in preparing for the class. His final exam was pretty straightforward, he gave a list of what key topics to know for the exam and it was super helpful.
He is a very nice teacher but i don't think he does a good job teaching. He is very patient so even if you don't understand he is always willing to help. Be ready to spend a lot of time teaching yourself. I took online.
I got an A in chem 1211 but in 1212 Doc. Poteat makes it very confusing, I dont understand what is he trying to explain. He doesnt give much example in class, but he gives u a bunch of hw questions which I might dont know how to do. His lecture is very confusing. I dont recommend this teacher. take other prof if you can
Poteat is not a person who can explain Chem 1212 very well but he gives u study guides before every test; u just need to STUDY THE STUDY GUIDE and you will get an easy A. The home works are tough but the test were much much easier. He gives 4 tests; no quizzes. If you did good on the final exam, he will REPLACES the lowest test with the final exam.
Every day I entered this class clueless, and I left confused. He's got a PhD, and he expects all of us to also have PhD's. In the first day, he started talking about chapter 10. In the next day he started talking about chapter 5. In the third day, I had no clue what he was talking about. However, he does provide study guides that help in exams :)
A lot of test materials won't be covered in class. Read the chapters, do the homework problems, and use the study guide. His lectures are confusing at times because he often deviates from the subject and will get you lost. Make sure you know the materials well because he likes to throw a lot curveballs on tests.
Organic Chem is a hard class and Poteat is a terrible teacher. His lectures only serve as participation credit. Tests are fairly easy though. You must teach yourself. Final is hard but he does curve. Got Bs and Cs on tests then got a 63 on final and still got a B in class. He's a nice guy just a terrible teacher. Must use textbook and clutch prep
Took him for gen. chem 2 lecture and organic 1 lab. Hard to hear, provides study guide for each test which covers everything thats on the test, and lab includes one lab report. As long as you study you will get an A or B.
He expects you to read the whole chapter from the book for each experiment! NO midterm, which is not good because you have a lot to read for final. 3 problem sets, which he is hard in grading them. I really don't recommend him.
Professor Poteat was very unhelpful during the online class I took. He would provide which chapters to read and homework, but he was not helpful when it came down to studying for midterms and finals.
I took him for Chem1211 Lab and he is such a nice guy. He helped me, and always answered the million questions I had. He's very quite, and I could not always understand when he tried to explain topics time. He's patient though, so he will explain until it clicks. Overall, I enjoyed his class!
Ive taken this professor twice! I missed a test that makes up for 160 points when I explain to him about the death in my family his response was make better use of time because life happens I wish they would fire him and provide better teachers for chem. He was my only choice both times! He doesnt respond to emails or grade on time.
If your answers arent verbatim to his. You will get points docked, if you miss a test good luck you failed the class. He wont let you make up anything. Take this class at another school before taking it with jerry poteat
Dr. Poteat doesnt keep up with grading; a kind person, but I felt lost in his lectures, with his continuous changing of subjects. First time I ever did chemistry and learned the most from the tutoring department, and not the teacher. Participation is necessary, along with attendance; he gives opportunities for extra credit, and homework. Textbook!
Dr. Poteat is not for everyone, but hes a good guy. He gets right to the point. The lecture tests are not bad as long as you study. Participation is important. Do the work, study, show up. Hes also quiet, so sit near the front. Lab is very easy as long as you do everything correctly and read the directions before class.
