One of the best English teacher's I've had. Extremely laid back and down to earth, even with his Ph.D.!

THE BEST!!! Super patient and clear in all his lectures. Awesome attitude.
Great teacher. I have no problem sitting through two hours of lecture. He makes each topic intresting and then sparks and incourgaes conversation in class.

His class turned out to be very disappointing. He does not make the readings/poems exciting. I don't recommend him for the English majors. Very boring class.
I learned a lot in his class. He provokes much of the class into point of views that they never thought they would have. Good teacher with good classroom capability. His class is not easy, you DEFINATELY need to have well written papers with good thought.
GREAT professor! Laid back, very interesting, makes you look at things from many different points of views, ones you would never think of. You have to do well on your papers, format papers just as he asks in order to get a good grade!Want to learn? Take one of his classes! Rafiki your AWESOME!
Awsome teacher - if i could manage to have him as my prof for all my english classes, my major would so much more enjoyble. Thanks!!
Nice Guy but grades tough if your papers aren't well thought out.Good classroom environment and discussion but is sometimes too laid back and expects people to read his mind on what he wants done.
Awesome professor, makes lecture and classroom environment interesting and enjoyable. Makes you look at things from a different point of view. Overall very enjoyable class, nice guy, laid back, and you learn a lot also.
very easy going, interesting, easy class
very funny, nice and made his lectures interesting. he lost my paper, so he gave me an A on it! :) i definitely recommend him!
Rafiki is an intelligent man, and loves to have people interact with him and the rest of the people in his class. I very much enjoyed his class. Although he sometimes has a problem expressing what he wants, especially when it comes to papers, but overall he's a great humanbeing and teacher.
he is a FANTASTIC teacher..best english teacher. I hate english and he made me enjoy it. I wish I could have him for every subject!
love the class! Even though I hate writting essays:)
love the class! Even though I hate writting essays:)
funny and entertaining
HE FREAKIN ROCKZ!!!!! BEST PROF EVER AND A REALLY COOL GUY
Rafiki is great. A lot of writing, but I got an A. ^_^
Cool guy very tough grader nobody got an A in his class.
This guy is really cool and not like other professors out there he actually can relate to his students, but he is REALLY hard went it comes to grading. If you are willing to do the work you'll do fine, plus hes kind of sexy.
hardest class grading wise i have ever taken but it is a fun class and the teacher is sick. VERY TOUGH GRADER! i got the highest grade in the class on a paper and it was a C+. TOUGH GRADER!
Rafiki is the coolest teacher although he is what everyone else has said, a very hard grader. He can always keep you interested, but isn't always clear on what he expects. Unless you really excel in wrighting then i would advise not taking him. Great guys though just really hard.
Rafiki is a hard grader but if you have any questions, he is the most helpful teacher on campus. Very understanding with a students busy schedule. Great Teacher!!!
very tough grader but he is willing to help. But, very hard grader
he is a straight up gangsta...he expects a lot out of his students and is a very hard grader. Easy B but to get an A it will take hard work...
I love this teacher i have never loved English this much in my life! Thank you Mr. Jenkins
I LOVE THIS MAN!!!! Take any of his classes and you will learn not only alot about the subject, but about life in general :)
horrible worst teacher i have ever had
He made it interesting but it was still hard. At least he put on videos that were fun to watch!
terrible absolutely the worst most unresponsible and uncaring teacher i have ever. He should be illegal to take
Don't expect to get an A on the first essay Rafiki is looking to see improvement in your writing. Come to class because this is a cool teacher and he changes the due dates. Also if you don't understand something ASK he doesn't understand he isn't really clear sometimes.
This was by the worst class i have ever taken in college. Not only did i not learn anything, but struggled to even understand what he wanted from us. I barely passed with a "C", and 75% of our class failed or got a "D"simply because no one knew what he wanted. All he really wanted from Palomar was to use it to get to a university he wanted to beat
Great teacher! His class is interesting and he has very good views. He's really nice and helpful, which is good because his essays are difficult. You tell him your topic and he gives you the whole outline. Really wonderful teacher, but don't take him if you don't like writing essays. Ask questions.
The teacher is very unclear in conveying to the student's what he wanted. He had a very non-caring attitude and is one of the worst teacher I have ever taken
I loved Rafiki although the class is extremely difficult. It's a matter of learning what he wants and delivering on it. 4 papers, 2 reading exams, the final paper is a BEAR. Tough, but doable. And Rafiki is a character - he's a very interesting guy to talk to outside of class. Even though he's a Yankees fan... :)
How did this guy get a PhD? His grammar is messed up. And, if you don't read his mind on what he considers to be 'perfect formatting', you'll get a C.
He's a pretty funny, outgoing guy who will give you help when you ask but he's not an easy grader. Attendance isn't mandatory so your grade is pretty much based on 3 essays, a research paper and 4 annotated bibliographies.
Great teacher, great experience. Was totally NOT expecting a sci-fi themed 202 course, but I <3 sci-fi so it worked out. I was never a fan of essays, but the topics were fun and my writing really improved. Got an A on the final paper and in the class. Recommend him to anyone looking for a fun 202 class. Only beef: Doesn't like the Dallas Cowboys ;)
he was a good professor who really wants to see the writing of his students improve. He is a very outgoing guy and his classes are usually interesting. It is VERY hard to get an A in his class. Some may say its not worth the headache
He is very funny and makes the class interesting, but his material isn't very clear. It is really hard to get an A on a paper unless its absolutely perfect, you must follow HIS guidelines in order to receive a good grade. I got an A in English 100 but I got all C's on my papers so his grading scale is really bad.
English has always been one of my favorite subjects but after taking this class I have converted into despising it. The class is extremely boring, the essay topics are pointless, and the teacher is a VERY hard essay grader, plays favoritism and is not clear with what he wants. I highly suggest you take a differnt teacher for this course.
Pretty awesome guy, very cool but sucks at teaching. I learned nothing from this class and its impossible to get an A
Awesome teacher. Extremely approachable, very upbeat and easygoing. Comments here mentioned that there was too much writing, but duh, it's an English writing class, what did you expect? Despite what most have said here, that he grades pretty hard, I think his grading is pretty fair, and he allows you to pass drafts first, so you can hone your paper
Amazing teacher. Learned a lot about life. He knows what hes talking about, hes cool, hes funny, he used to rapppp haha. If you have the chance take this teacher. I used to stay after class all the time and we would talk for a long time just about everything. Really chill guy, if you can take this class and you dont your really missing out
This was one of the hardest professors I've ever had for english. He is a really cool guy, but the way he grades is ridiculous. If you want an easy pass do not take him.
you have to be a pretty decent writer in his class. stick to your thesis. write a legit counter argument. never give a random opinion. use the people you read in the textbook and their opinion and their facts to write your paper. stick to that and you'll do fine on the essays.
Rafiki is my favorite teacher of all time! You will enjoy this class if writing is your forte, don't come to this class if you expect something easy. He is very friendly and funny, and great just to talk to. He always picks interesting novels, and I feel like I learned so much about writing, vampires and myself. Absolutely recommended.
Teacher is a very hard grader. If you aren't a good writer you'll fail.
Rafiki is great! He may be a hard grader, but he is always available to help you write a better paper. So long as you stay consistent with your thesis and make a decent counter argument you'll be fine. Just go to all the classes, take notes, and read the stories.
Dr. J is a cool cat, but he takes his work like any serious professional. That being said, he will help you become a better writer that can understand and critically analyze your own work. Just put in work and be serious about the lessons he's teaching you. His instructions aren't always crystal clear, but his purpose is to make you a better writer
Rafiki is the man. Very, very difficult class, but totally worth the intense amounts of work you will be putting into it. Learned so much, and definitely became a way better writer. Anyone who questions his methods clearly is not meant for a career in writing, because he is a baller and his course are for those who wish to be at his level.
his essay topics are not clear and if you are wrong about something he wont help you he just sits back and makes you look like an idiot :( has definitely made me cry a couple times because ive felt like a complete idiot!
NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL. Very confusing as to what he is looking for in his essays. Hard grader. Is intimidating and slightly arrogant, makes you feel stupid for asking questions and argues against ANYTHING you suggest. I'm a straight A student yet all I've gotten in Jenkins class are C's.
Rafiki was a really great teacher, his topics were a bit tough, however if one has the desire to write and put effort in their work its a piece of cake. He also helps in his conferences giving you specifics on what you need to get an A paper. Take him if you're looking for a good english teacher
Rafiki is a pretty cool guy and a excellent professor. He keeps things interesting in class. His topics are not difficult, they just require thinking. His conferences were the most helpful, take advantage of that time and ask any questions you still have, he WILL answer them.110% RECOMMEND. Fair grader, looks for improvement in your writing.
He is a bit of a tough grader, but extremely helpful, fun, and nice. A great class that you will not regret. So long as you show up, talk to him at your 1-on-1 meetings, and improve a little each essay you will get a A or at least a B. You watch a bunch of really interesting movies too, and the stories you write about are great.
Hands-down one of my favorite professors ever. He knows his stuff, open and friendly, totally helpful. If you don't ever have a class with him you're missing out big time.
Don't take this class unless your a good writer and do a lot of critical thinking. The professor is a bit aggorant and always thinks he is right and will make you look like an idiot because he wants to be right. Don't take this class to get an easy A.Don't take this class period!!
he is way hard! If you know your not good at english and only taking this cause its required ur going to struggle terribly! he jumps right into things as if we know the material. He makes the class harder than it should be . He takes his job way too serious, i wish i didnt enroll in his class. Also he does make you look dumb!
Rafiki is really an excellent prof. His grading in the 101 class is tough but he gaurantes that you will be able keep up in an eng 202 course rather then struggle. He curves the first grade or two innorder to better set you up for future grades. He's a college teacher not highschool teacher most of the ppl who complain are simple minded
He is very intelegent, fair & helpfull a Cool Cat but if you struggle with English or writing this class is not for you. His topics are interesting and he makes you really think and use your Brain so if you feel uneasy about Eng go back take Eng50, then come back and chill with Rafiki he will challange your way of thinking. I'll be Back next fall!
AH Rafiki, he is a very very good teacher. He doesn't baby you as much, but he still tries to guide you through the process. Essay writing was the easiest ive had in all my years of writing. He sits down with you one on one and thoroughly goes over the basics of your paper. VERY HELPFUL! But a fair grader, can't bs your way through.
Rafiki is really Morpheus and offers the red or blue pill. Then its on with challenge after challenge. If you try you will pass but dont expect charity! Great guy.
Rafiki is one of the best professors/ teachers ive ever had. He is so willing to help and the material is very interesting. i recommed him to EVERYONE no matter how confident you are in your english skills. you will be glad you had him
One of the best professor out there. If you want to succeed in the future he is they guy to go to. Don't expect an easy A. You have to work for it.
Super hard class, but knowing I am getting B or an A in his class makes me think I can pass any english class. To be honest i did not like the essay topics(American dream in films, the 50s family, and gender role)
Rafiki is an awesome guy with a great sense of humor and understanding. But his coarse is whack! The essay prompts and readings are less then stimulating and he missed more classes then I did. grade updates are non-existent as he doesn't use blackboard. Very challenging grader. 1st thing he said to class was, "4% will get A's, 40% will pass"
Oh boy was he a hard teacher, his assignments gave me anxiety the whole semester. I thought I was going to fail no doubt, on all my essays I got D's. Then at the end of the semester I got a C! I was happy with it.....sorta. Really hard grader.
This professor is very kind and seems to be an incredibly intelligent person who enjoys a good argument. However, he is a strict grader. The essay prompts are also difficult to fulfill and require quite a large amount of work to actually get a good grade on despite their moderate length.
One of the hidden gems at Palomar College. An insightful professor who will challenge you to think critically about the world we live in. Jenkins takes an interesting glimpse at the vampire; an inspection that has, in many ways, broadened my horizons. This is my first review of a professor: Jerry should be working at a four year institution.
One of the best teachers I've ever had, not only at a JC but also at a 4 year. Loved how interactive he is with the class and he made me think critically about many topics. His grading his pretty rough, but I am a better writer for taking his class.
Chill, laid back. Funny and has such an animated laugh! I loved talking to him because he's intelligent yet grounded. Yet, essay topics were very abstract and hard to get a grasp on. You have to think A LOT and try really hard. But, he is more than happy to help and clarify! I wasn't too happy with getting a C, but i enjoyed getting to know him!
By far the best professor I've ever met. Rafiki was my professor for 3 courses. He is a very friendly and intelligent individual who teaches interesting topics. You just have to put some serious thought into your papers because he isn't an easy grader. I got an A grade in all 3 of his courses and would definitely take him again.
He has great teaching ethics. Took both African Studies 101 and 102 with him. He is by far one of my favorite professors. If you pay attention in class, take notes and study for the test you will pass.
This guy got me kicked out of his class because I said are you calling me out when he was asking a question and told the principle I was trying to fight him. I meant do you want me to answer the question I guess being authentic is unacceptable in his class
He gives you study guides prior to exam dates. Exams may contain multiple choice or short answer(60 pts), and essay questions(40). You can answer essay questions at home & bring them in on the day of the exam(Not MC or SA). They're critical thinking essay questions. 5 exams, but drops the lowest grade. Offers 20pts Extra credit. Mostly memorization
Attendance is mandatory only if you want to understand the books properly. He brings up great points but was not very helpful. He looked over my paper and I made the corrections then later he made corrections to those same parts that he told me to change. The topics are too deep for a English 203 class, Great enthusiasm, but not very helpful...
Fantastic professor with very interesting topics. Best suited for open-minded individuals. He teaches you exactly what 4 year universities expect in student essays.
Wonderful teacher. Open-minded and always willing to help. Gives extra time to those who need it during tests. No textbook usage. Very relatable and entertaining. Shared food with me hahaha
This professor helped improve my writing. After he assigns his papers, he has a one-on-one conference with you to make sure you're on the right track and understand what the paper is about. He does use a lot of profanity during his lectures so if this doesn't bother you, you'll be fine. I will definitely be taking him again for English 202.
I was scared I was not going to pass this class. He made sure I did with all the extra help and guidance. I was seriously considering just dropping the class but Dr. Jenkins assured me I would be fine. He is funny, and approachable if you don't ask you will not pass! I loved his teaching style and he really does care about the students needs!
He's a pretty good professor. Even though most of the things he believes in I disagree with, he still is pretty good. Keeps you awake in class and generally fun to listen to.
There is a lot of reading involved in the textbook, but besides that this class is a breeze! As long as you apply yourself and take notes during his lectures you should have no problem getting an A or a B. He is absolutely hilarious and I would take his class again in a heartbeat. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
Rafiki has a great sense of humor and I actually like going into his class. He is a tough grader on papers though he even said so himself on the first day of class.
The only reason I say he's "fine" is because he has cancelled class at least four times this semester, excluding the week he took off because his wife had a baby. Nice teacher, good lectures, slow to grade assignments but that's fine. I just didn't care for how he'd last minute cancel classes, sometimes hours before.
One of the most interesting classes I had this semester. Dr. Jenkins is a pretty cool teacher . Would definitely recommend him.
I took Professor Jenkins class in the fall and it was probably the hardest class I've ever taken at Palomar as a sophomore. If you like and are good at English, then you should be fine. He was very kind and lenient with me and gave me extensions when I asked and needed it. He explains things very well and his lectures were fun to watch at times.
Couldn't find an RMP for Rafiki for SDSU, so I am leaving my review here. Rafiki is literally one of the best literature professors I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject he is teaching. Rafiki also has a great sense of humor and is very generous (brining donuts during presentations). I highly recommend Rafiki!
Mr. Jenkins was one of the worst English professors I have had. He grades on a subjective scale on how your opinion aligns with his, if it doesnt, you will get a bad grade. His feedback was useless and never helpful. Would not recommend taking any class with this professor, unless you want to lie about your opinions.
I took him for English 100. I am a stem major, and English is not my favorite subject, but I enjoyed the class and did better on the writing assignments than I expected. He is a bit of a political guy but even so, I thought the lectures were interesting and he clearly is very smart and educated.
Dr. Jenkins was an incredible professor. He is very understanding and accessible. The ENG202 class was very straightforward and we used one small book for the entire semester. The papers were not too complicated and he provides many resources. The assignments were very easy to keep track of. I would definitely recommend him for this class!
Seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. Passionate about the subject at hand and passionate about teaching the kids as well. Very caring and understanding if you need help with anything, also likes to crack jokes. He wants you to think about things you've never thought about before in ways you've never thought about before either.
