I took this as first programming class, he wasnt very good if you are new at it
Not bad professor. Keeps lecture interesting, work is very straightforward.
WORST! Get out of this class ASAP! Unclear lectures/can't explain...
This guy knows his stuff and makes it easy and fun to learn.
Lectures were unclear and undeveloped... could learn much from Vangorp.
Because of him, i got out of CS,Now i wish i would have taken some other prof :(
Poor communicator.Hard to follow.Doesn't explain things. Lab work is esp unclear
I do not like this professor. Very unclear and hard to follow.
I wanted to throw my computer into Zumberg pond!
BAD JOKES
He needs to learn how to give a lecture...No structure. Good guy. Bad Class
Treated me like an idiot when I had pertinent questions. Dropped it...
Horrible teaching style. Doesn't like to help students new to programming.
Very annoying, tries way too hard to be funny, and doesn't really teach anything.
has a tendency to change your grades half way through the semester.
If you want to learn programming by the end...take Scripps. He makes you learn.
jokes so bad he's actually funny...umm...first part of class hard..then gets eas

Very unorganized
Nice guy, unstructured teacher = difficult for new programmers. Funny though....
Told bad jokes and lowered my report card grade after he said i got an A.
Sometimes no knowledge of what supposed to be teaching, labs easy
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR, and I am not leaving this because I got a bad grade (A)
pretty nice guy, but hard for first time programmers
Cool guy, tries to keep it interesting, slips in odd jokes to cause interest
Nice guy, very poor with helping new programmers
Did not teach clearly. Was very confusing a nd doesn't encourage to ask question
Very hard teacher to learn from all concepts were unclear and the tests horrible
doesn't teach really, favors the students that have done this stuff before
class was easy w/prior programming knowledge, but scripps was unclear at times
Very tough class. Teacher gives you help and supports you if you make an effort.
Pretty cool guy, but look out 1st time programmers, it's a rough trip
after you have other cs profs you realize how good jerry is
I agree, you don't realise how good Jerry is till you have others
Great guy, the funniest class I have this sem., material is hard for beginners
probabley the best programming prof youll encounter

Excellent Prof! Cares a lot about students' comprehension. One of the Best!
Knowledgeable on material - tries to interact with class
Very good teacher compared to most in CS dept. Very helpful. Great Teacher.
If you do bad this professor...I suggest changing major. CS gets much harder
Can't complain about this guy. If you cant handle this class u are dumb or lazy
Great prof, allows a lot of questions and encourages them, makes class interesti
SCRIPPS OWNS YOU!
run as fast as you can!!!!
He is not an ordinary teacher. . . He is college student caught in a 30 body
Am a web programmer, class was easy, graded fairly, would recommend
Good prof, nice guy, can be confusing
Grrrrrrrrrrr.......does not explain well at all
good comp. sci. prof, nice guy

Pretty decently nice guy. Not really the best teacher... but there's definitely worse in the CS department. Not anti-Scripps, but definitely no strong recommendation is coming from me either.
Probably the best 162 prof, very good at giving examples, but the first 3 weeks of the class are hard if you have little java background. Get Scripps if you want a good CS 162 prof.
because of this class and prof. i switched my major. Cool guy, unclear, dosen't help in labs, avoid this class at all costs!!!! Aproximatly half the class failed or dropped out.....
Funny guy, fairly easy class if you spend the necessary time on the projects and labs. Some of the labs are more than the students can handle, make sure to ask questions in lab!

Scripps is the man. Nice guy, willing to help. The projects require alot of homework time, but as long as you put the effort in, you will get a good grade.
Scripps is hilarious. He teaches pretty well, but if you really want to learn, go to lab and chill with his lab assistant Micah, that kid is a genius (and a mad cutie too). Definitely go for Scripps if you have to take this class. He brings muffins!
Took the class for the second time with Scripps. Awesome professor. Go to office hours and ask questions, very helpful. Lots of time out of class with any prof for this course. Put in the time and get the help and you'll do well.
Subject is easy if you have background knowledge. Scripps expect you to know programming before you take this class. When you ask questions, he just confuses you more. Switched major bc of him. Makes you feel dumb when asking questions.
Not having a CS background made this class pretty tough. Scripps assumes prior CS knowledge, even though this is an intro class. He is a friendly and funny guy though. Final exam was a surprise - 88 & 95 on first 2, 60% on final! Projects are tough too
Changed my major because of this class. Scripps is probably one of the best CS 162 teachers, but he expects prior knowledge of java, which I didn't have any of. Projects are very tedious. Don't ask questions, you'll just confuse yourself more.
If you have no computer programming background...dont take his course. If you do, then you'll be fine. He's a good guy, but wont give you much help. He likes to think you can figure everything out on your own.
Loved him & class so much I lab assisted for him.Great guy & helpful as long as u try ur hardest. If u don't understand, utilize office hours.Prior knowledge helps, but not necessary.Class is demanding, not prof.Team of profs creates labs/proj, not him.

Expects prior knowledge, yet this is intro to teach you the 'prior' knowledge. He would be 10x better if he would help more, and understand when you dont know how to fix it, the answer isnt just going to come to you in the middle of the nite!Great Person!
He's a nice guy, does think that everyone knows Java, and if you don't he gets frustrated easily. Doesn't know how to explain at all. Lectures are a waste. Stats teaching stuff that's on the projects 1 week in advance when 2 weeks were intially given.

Knows his stuff, has trouble getting info across in class. Good at office hours, will spend as much time as needed with you.
Good prof
If you cant pass Jerrys cs 150 class there can only be two reasons. 1. You didnt go once. 2. You are a mongoloid.
Fine professor. Just keep up with the material. He won't always do it for you. Nice guy. He has a sense of humor and is usually pretty happy, but he's a total nerd and it's very obvious. Sometimes his jokes make no sense. At least he's trying...
Terrible class! Exams are from some teacher resource, and even Scripps doesn't get some of the questions. Don't take him!
Good guy, wants you to do well. This was my favorite class, mostly because of him. He's entertaining, and the class was pretty easy.
i thought he was a fine professor, but i might have been biased since i thought the class was easy. read the book and you'll be fine.
Written tests & final were all open book/open note, & the lab tests were based on the labs done for class. Overall, a very easy class. I looked forward to it as a break in my day. Finished the final in under 45 minutes. Nice guy; very helpful. Take notes, & pay attention, and you'll do fine.
long time ago like 2 years i think it was like cs 162 or somethin.
He doesnt make you do the tutorials in the book. Easy class. Lectures are boring and worthless because test comes OUT OF THE BOOK. The lab is the only time you actually have to do assignments though. Easy class!

really nice prof, asks questions and gets input from students, pretty easy class. you can pass without going to class much but bad idea, assignments due mondays, weekly quiz on wednesdays, group work fridays.
...If you need this class for credit, save your self the trouble and take it with another professor. Professor Scripps is a nice guy, but if you haven't had programming before, your walking into a land mine...
Probably one of my fav profs. It was very easy. He was funny and laid back and really knows what he's talking about. Might be a lil challenging if you've never had any programming before, but he's willing to help. I found it to be an easy A and my other friends who had him agreed.
This was supposed to be the class that weeded out the CS students. He did an awesome job of teaching this subject with levity. He made it as easy to understand as it could have been. I seriously recommend him!
if u haven't had programming before, u should not be in this class. but if you've had previous experience, take this class with scripps. very helpful if u ask & he's not a tough grader at all. He will sometimes give u answers straight up. weekly quizzes/labs which aren't too bad. he can be a pretty funny/corny guy. take this class with him!
Awesome prof, made me WANT to go to class. Projects were simple and he was extremely clear about directions. Anyone that had trouble was either an idiot or lazy. That being said, there is a good amount of work to be done.
Awesome prof.
Scripps is the man.
I don't know why this guy doesn't have a yellow smiley face by his name. As someone else said... he is the man.
This professor is ill educated in the line of his teaching. I feel as though he was a waste of my tuition and time. I would not ever take him as a professor again nor would I recommend him to anyone else. Never was well prepared for classes, and the students seemed to teach more than him.
Scripps didn't have a clear class structure - bounced from one idea to another in random order and sometimes came back to previous ideas. With limited notes, he was not well prepared for class. Students with some experience could have taught this class. He relied on students knowledge to write the correct syntax and he referred us to Google alot
Make no mistake about it, if you've never had programming before this class will be very difficult. That being said, Jerry is a really nice guy and I ended up with a B- and should have gotten a C. His "car" examples are a bit lame but we does try to communicate the best he can.
Jerry is a funny teacher and very easy to get along and work with.
He is a great guy, extremely helpful, and actually makes class fun.
If you've never had prior programming experience, don't expect to understand Scripps' lectures. Having said that, he is very nice and a fun prof.
I had this course a while ago, He is a great guy but expect to work a a lot...I had a little bit of programming experience before and still had some difficulty. Now, 2 years later, I am good at Java I can see how this class could be a blast. I didn't really feel like I learned from him until the END of the semester though.
The class is hard....but I'm not rating the class I'm rating Scripps and HE IS THE MAN!
This class itself can be difficult especially if you have no prior experience in programming, but all around scripps is a excellent professor. He makes the class fun and he is really laid back.
The course itself is difficult. Starts off really easy, but by the end of it you're left confused (unless you already have a background in Visual Basic coding). Scripps was funny and nice, class was usually pretty entertaining. The only downside is that when you're in lab, he isn't that helpful. He just kinda shows you what to do.
Scripps isn't a easy teacher. He can be funny and is a genius when it comes to coding, but he doesn't really do a good job teaching it to you. he isn't much help in labs at all either. It's hard at first because I had no programming or coding experience. I learned everything just fine, but mostley by myself with my text book. he's a funny guy tho.
Scripps is a great teacher. Some people new to coding might have trouble, but he's very available to help if you're having issues, as is the lab assistant and your classmates. Not too much textbook use, flipped classroom style was extremely helpful. Taking him next semester for 163.
I went in with a tiny bit of programming experience, and have not found the class to be all that difficult. Scripps was an overall average teacher in my opinion. Very funny though!
Scripps is a bad ass dude. Take this thug for your classes because he's a great teacher. Scripps if life. Scripps is love. Scripps is all.
Scripps has a very unique style of teaching. You watch all of the lectures on YouTube before class as homework and then go over the topics in class. This method helps a lot, because you can code right along with him and can pause and rewind. Any questions can be addressed the next day in class as you go over examples. Very good professor.
I took Scripps for Comp Sci 162. He certainly knew what he was doing when it came to programming and he usually was able to get the information across. No real tests during the class other than midterm and final. He uses a flipped classroom so be sure to watch the videos before class. Good, not great teacher. Would take him again though.
This was the most boring lecture and I eventually stopped attending. If you show up for the lab portion and do the online homework on your own, you should get an easy A. This was a very easy class but required a lot of time doing online work. I think Jerry was a very smart prof, but he had a hard time dumbing it down to our level.
Tough class. He seems to struggle to help the students who know nothing about coding, but is willing to do what it takes to help. Lots of projects which he doesn't go much over beforehand, and he expects you to try it on your own first.
My only complaint with Dr. Scripps' web applications course was that his material was somewhat dated. Direct questions about HTML5 or new JavaScript standards fell by the wayside. That being said, Scripps has an interest in data science, so his thoughts and answers on the internet and web technologies as a whole are very insightful.
Scripps is an all round good guy with a great desire to teach. He is very smart and is also quite funny as well. 162 is not a hard class but Scripps made it enjoyable and the subject matter very memorable
I took CIS 162 with Scripps, an introductory Java course. He spends the classroom time teaching you about Java with the white board and projector (using a code platform to show real code). He'll answer questions, make jokes, and use metaphors to real world things to help strengthen student understanding of new concepts. Can collaborate on projects.
Always helpful and answers any and all questions you may have, you just have to ask.
Prof. Scripps is a nice man, and he makes me laugh. His lectures are fine, but his weekly homework assignments in R-Studio are terrible. There's little to no instruction in the later assignments and he does not answer his emails when you have questions. Class went hybrid due to COVID19 and questions on my final project went completely unanswered.
Dr Jerry Scripps presents in a very interesting and involving way. Adds humor to make sure youre not bored by his lectures. Knowledgeable in the subject area. Sincerely respects students and converts his helping and caring attitude . Open to students suggestions on content, methods
I really liked taking Professor Scripps. He kept lecture interesting and I could tell he had a genuine interest in his students and wanted them to do the best they possibly could. Final grades aren't out yet, but I got an A or A-. This class is pretty difficult content-wise, so make sure you're keeping up with things and you will be alright!
