Seems like a redneck but his class isn't that hard. He can get annoying at times. Don't need to go to lectures (pit), most of the info on the tests comes from the book.
Stark is interested in stark. He is uneventful.
I agree with the other guy, Stark is interested in Stark. It wasn't interesting at all, I was so tired of hearing about his grandchildren. Then of course the tests are hard because he doesn't stay on task and actually teach.
Tough tests, but I didn't read so I cannot comment really. He is a very smart guy, seems to get off topic easily though.
Two words...he sucked!
The ego is a terrible thing to waste. His should be lower. HUGE! Stark is interested in his ego projects.
cocky guy. tests are straight out of the book so don't bother going to class otherwise. he's also a tough grader
Take soc 101, learn about Stark's childhood. Oh, and some sociology.
the guy sucked
I liked the guy, but he liked me even out of a huge pit class. If you show up he'll only talk about personal experiences but I think they help. read the book and you'll get an A
Someone already said it best, take his class and you'll learn about Stark's childhood... and some sociology. Exams are straight from the book, lectures are not important and neither are his notes unless you want to write his biography.
Again, don't bother going to lectures becuase everything you need is out of the book. Make sure you read carefully though, because he can focus on some of the small details that aren't necessarily highlighted in the book.
i would rather get a cavity search from an angry gorilla then go to his class and hear his life story over and over again
I'm a Sociology major. Had him for 3 classes so far. Has a BIG EGO, and thinks he's perfect. He is very tough grader, and it seems like he wants his students to fail. I one time saw him laugh at how bad the class did on our exams.. He's arragont, cocky, and reason many Soc. majors don't graduate.
Don't take Starks classes! They are a waste of time and a gpa buster. he makes no effort to relate to his students and only talks about his great knowlege of the world. none of that info will be on his rediculously exams. The only way to do wellis to ignore his ego and read the book.
talks about how he grew up in a small town that is like 8 times the size of my home town, no respect for the students, cares about himself and his time standing in the wellfare lines, TAKE OLSON for 101!!!
Great professor. Likes to tell stories that really do help you understand the concepts of the class. Fun and interesting!
Yes, Stark's classes are his autobiography. Some of his stories are interesting, but you wonder, did we really need to know all that? No, you don't. Go to lecture for statistics not found in the book. I read the entire book and got an A.
Horrible professor. Avoid him if you can! Better off taking sociology for interim.
This guy knows what he's talking about. He's got interesting stories to share and I really enjoyed the class.
he's very strict
major jerk. i really think he likes failing kids. he gives quizzes like it's nobody's business, & grades really harsh. he's a conrolling evil dictator. 1/3 of our class dropped already. if u don't read the syllabus, u wouldn't even know there was an exam, because he makes NO effort to try and help u prepare for them. don't take him unless u need to

The man talks about himself the entire class! Most of the time he doesn't bother teaching us, just tells stories about his life. It doesn't even go along with what we are supposed to be learning.
This class is his autobiography. It' a waste of an hour, and for the money we pay for it to sit there and listen to his spel is ridiculous. I recommend if you are able to get a Socilogy class that it isn't with him. Ridiculous, just stay home and read your book and go to class on test day.
He's an egotistical maniac. Talks constantly about himself. Expects you to learn concepts by rote rehearsal and put them on the page EXACTLY, VERBATIM, as he gave you in class. Read the book, went to class, made note cards, took the tests, flunked the last 2 & because of the curve still got a B. The huge curve says all about his teaching abilities.
interesting class. i thought his personal stories fit very well with the material being taught and gave a much clearer idea of what it actually all meant. my only gripe is that he need to lighten up about seating arrangements. he's maniacal about that.
this teacher sucks big time. He should have the class say history of starks life. Not a good teacher.
Very hard to understand how his examples fit into the material being covered. Spends too much time at home being "sick"
Spends hours talking about his family and his life. Stay in bed, skip class until test days. Read material and you'll do well because of HUGE CURVES IN GRADING!
Just listened at the door due to late arrival today and he discussed the "10 students who have either dropped his class or just show up on test days." He went on to tell the whole class that we would eventually be kicked out of school and we would end up nowhere because of our frame of mind and that we were used to failure. I am pulling A,B,C!
This man is NOT very nice. He is a good talker and that's about it. He'll go on about how much he loves what he does for a job. If you're unfortunate enough to have him you'll soon learn what he loves. CONTROLLING people. That's his game. Find another instructor. Who needs it. Underlying disrespect for everyone including his wife.
Your learn about him, but nothing about sociology. Take Greg Olsen for this class.
Nothing says "waste of time" like Stark's infamous Sociology class. If you're not annoyed enough with spending the first 5 minutes of class filling every single empty seat, you will be when he talks non-stop about his past alcoholism, his wife, his coaching, etc.. etc.. It's no wonder football players take this major.. it is about common sense.
Do the online practice tests. They help out a lot. Read the book for sure. It pays to go to lecture. Not too bad. Just study.
he is basically there to teach you about his life and his family stories, then expects u to take a 100 question test and know everything on there, pretty much hes the worst teacher on campus. avoid
AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. He is a great speaker, but his classes suck. There is a lot of information and he expects you to give him answers (like a definition for example) WORD FOR WORD.....I will not recommend him to anyone and I feel sorry for anyone who has to sit through an entire semester with him (like me).
Due to what I heard about him - I dreaded going to his class - BUT lol I'm getting an 'A' - Take notes, attend lectures and what extremely helped me was flashcards from the book with vocabulary - there are always definitions on his exams or "which one of these is not a reason" for theories and such - know your statistics! You'll do fine! :D
The guy is a control freak, no matter how much he denies it..i dread the rest of the semester..avoid at all costs.
Talks about his life and other things a little to much hard to follow at times. tests can be difficult. would not take any of his classes again.
Despite what ppl will tell you, he is an awesome teacher IF you are there to learn about Sociology. If you're just there for credits, this isn't the class for you. He teaches Sociology concepts well and is good at relating concepts to real life storires. As he says, "Don't expect anything out of a teacher who doesn't expect anything out of you."
Very hard. He's very funny, but we all end up doing bad on his exams because he makes them impossible to take. Oh, he is a control freak also, and very anal.
Seems like an easy, straight to the point teacher, but when it comes to the tests, def. focused on Detail, stats and #'s. Fun class for the most part, some not. Don't need to go to class but if EVERY1 doesn't go to class he gets unhappy, and then will take the final and totally switch it around to " In class." to punish those not in class. Got a D
Kind of a strange man, but not that bad. Make sure you don't skip and read the material beforehand. He likes to have UNANNOUNCED quizzes quite frequently (IE You may have a quiz on Friday morning and have yet another one on Monday morning). His grading is pretty fair - the exam/quiz grades are out of the top score in the class.
He's a good teacher BUT he gives very very random 20 point pop quizzes... I couldn't make it to class twice because I was puking sick and missed so I missed out on 40 points and he just doesn't give a crap about that which is VERY unfair. His exams are also pretty hard and if you piss him off in any way, be prepared to be made a fool of in class.
So here's the deal with this guy...kinda full of himself, i fell asleep half the time...and the other half didn't even go...i'd suggest finding a buddy and you guys switch off days of goin to class..i didn't even go the second half of the semester and i just read the chapters and went over the bold words and got an AB...not bad for skipping i say..
interesting character
The only reason you should go to class is if there is a quiz. If his powerpoint is minimized, go to class, otherwise go back to bed. Class is pointless. All tests and quizes are str8 from book. Read text and you'll get an easy A. Random quizes and he does give up to 45 e/c points. Leave class right after quiz, don't stay, it's really pointles
Oh Uncle Jerry. Only go to class when you know there's a quiz. Lectures are pointless. All he talks about is his family, particularly his grandchildren. I hardly ever went and got an A.
I seriously can't stand this professor! His class was totally easy, but he gives SO many quizzes that it's hard to just skip days of class. I wasn't ever sure which days where going to have quizzes. Anyway, this guy was a big jerk, and I'm so sick of hearing about his family its insane...
Jerry's pretty biased at times which can be frustrating. He is quite self absorbed, but easy to follow (he has a powerpoint), however the majority of the questions on tests come straight out of the book. Make sure you show up to every class because he has a ton of pop quizzes that are difficult to predict.
He's a decent teacher, make sure you go to class because he has his random pop quizzes, but if you read the book you should do fine and make sure you read the chapeter review questions at the end of each chapter because he gets a lot of his questions from there, so if you read, you'll do fine!
Jerry Start is for all intensive purposes the man. Loves to talk about his family which is pretty interesting. His wife, I fear this woman she seems to be very strong willed. And his granddaughter the second coming of Brett Favre. The class on the other hand pretty easy just show up. Read the book, test and quiz answers come from it. EZ Class
I took him way back when, and I thought he was actually pretty good. Didn't think he was **** or bigoted like many here posted. Thought he was interesting and did a good job at making it so the class wasn't just boring information from the book. Tests were pretty easy, too.
I would say that this is the hardest course in the entire sociology department. If you read and keep up with notes you will do fine. Even though I wasn't particularly fond of his courses, I think he is a great guy and just expects a little more out of his students.
He is arrogant and very controlling. His lectures are a waste of time but you still have to go to class because of all the pop quizzes. If you read the book and show up for all the quizzes you'll be fine. I hated his class.
I think it's funny how people complain about his pop quizzes because it's harder to skip the class. It's college, you shouldn't be skipping class in the first place.
rude and demeaning.
Jerry Stark is a complete idiot. He thinks he knows everything when in fact he knows very little. You cant eat in class, and dont even dare pull your cell phone out in class. His exams contain nothing he talks about in class. This class should be called Jerry Starks opionion on everything 101. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
i thought this was a pretty simple class. if you do the reading and come to class you should do well! make sure you go to class every day, he likes to give random pop quizzes!
I thought Professor Stark was an extremely interesting professor. He does pop quizzes which are easy if you read and very helpful to your grade. Keep your cell phones off during his class, he doesn't like them out and that is understandable. I thought he was an interesting professor and I enjoyed his lectures.
make sure you go to class and read each chapter...that's where he gets the quiz questions. He's kind of a jerk but his job isn't to be nice to us...it's to teach. He gives a quiz at least once a week too so that kinda sucks.
make sure you keep up with the readings that he assigns otherwise when you get to the quiz you'll have no idea what's going on. also make sure to never skip class. he gives quizzes at completely random times and one miss can really mess up your grade! don't have your cell phone out in class, he'll get really mad. overall i think he's a big jerk.
please pitty yourself dont take this idiots class he is really out of his mind ol he talk abt is his family n 2 brilliant sons, guys he is really hard to get through u hav to attend ol classes lowet xtra credit points n really please take any other prof but him
Don't take. He's a useless professor on a power trip. Wants you to abide by his every command, and obviously gets off on it.
Stark does seem to be on a bit of a power trip- so be warned- HOWEVER...I found his lectures to be interesting and thought provoking. The tests and quizzes are rather ridiculous unless you have the text COMPLETELY memorized so be prepared to want to learn!!!
Outside of class he seems like a nice guy, and was very willing and accommodating for making up a quiz with an excused absence, but inside class he is definitely on a power trip and will tear you a new one just for checking your phone and other minor rule violations. Constantly refers you to the syllabus and won't give you a straight answer.
Very much a "hard-ass" teacher but very well informed, conducts interesting class, and is an interesting person. People seem to not understand that he talks a lot about personal experience because ITS DIRECTLY RELATED TO SOCIOLOGY! quizzes and tests are hard if you don't do the reading(hint:read the chapter review ?'s at the end of each section)
Jerry honestly did expect more out of his students than normal for just a 101 class, but it was nothing that couldn't be kept up with. If you read the chapter reviews you'll be fine. Just don't skip alot of classes or you wont be able to keep up, but thats kind of common sense. Overall, I would definitely take a class of his again.
Jerry expects way more out of students than regular 100 level class professors do. Attendance is not necessary; however, he randomly gives quizzes every week, so I wouldn't skip class. Don't bring food or anything electronic to class, otherwise he will humiliate you in front of the entire lecture hall. Exam/ quiz questions come directly from text.
He swore at a girl and almost made her cry becuase she didnt have a sick note
Probably the best class that I took at Oshkosh. Although many do not like his stories. They do directly relate to what is being taught. They were a major helper in me understanding key concepts in the course! I would love to take this class again!
He gives pop quizzes every week so you can't just skip class. Class is boring. It's power points every day. Online exams every monday and pre tests every week. I liked sociology before this class, but this class makes me never want to take a sociology class again. He will call people out on everything just to embarrass them.
He assigned every student to do quizzes every week on mysoclab.com knowing that there are errors in every chapter's questions and doesn't tell us ahead of time, letting us get frustrated every week!!!!! and then claims he is more frustrated with the website than we are, but hey then why the hell are you making your students deal with it pal? 0
I have mixed feelings about Professor Stark. I will say that he does NOT need to call out people in class for ridiculous things--it only adds more of a distraction and makes him look incredibly arrogant. With that being said, it's not a very hard class...people just complain because they're too lazy to show up to class and do the assignments.
Extremely strict...
Professor Stark seems like he's on a power trip. He's constantly yelling at people for the stupidest things. His lectures aren't mandatory, but he gives out pop quizzes so you have to be there anyway. Otherwise, his class is usesless. The tests are 99% from the book, 1% lecture. I learned very little from this class.
i thought the class was interesting, but the lectures made me hate the material. Jerry rambles about nonsense and the lectures never show up on exams. you have to read the textbook in order to do well. there are pop quizzes in class and you never know when you will have one. the exams are much easier than the in class quizzes.
Very tough prof and not willing to work with you on anything! Dont take him if you dont have to!!!
Do EVERYTHING you can to not take him! He is a terrible teacher! Not only does he waste time, but he is rude and inconsiderate of peoples' needs. I have epilepsy and he told me he didn't care if I had a seizure. If you're a bad test taker do not take his class! His exams are 120 questions in 60 minutes. I'm pretty sure that he hates the world!
Great guy. Experienced and knowledgeable. Demands respect, which is expected in college. Goes on tangents about his life stories but they do have some relivance.
Not at all concerned with the well being of his students. Power hungry and uses it to his advantage. 120 question exams are not viable for a 60 minute class. It's an introductory course..get over yourself!
I totally agree with all previous comments. Do whatever you can to avoid taking his class. He's a terrible instructor.
Worst teacher I've EVER had! biggest power trip ever, near impossible to finish exams, random pop quizzes. you need a 60% to pass, and i had a 59.94%. absolute GARBAGE
prof Stark is not easy . I dropped his soc101 once because i did bad on the pop tests from my lack of reading. i could have taken any one else for soc 101 but instead i decided to step up my game to become a better student and read more and study more. Prof Stark takes charge of his class room which a lot of professors need to also.
HE IS TERRIBLE. He only became a teacher so he can talk to people and not talk with people. Inconsiderate is an understament for him. I hope I never have to see him again in my life after this class.
Don't take notes unless you want to write Stark's bigraphy. I almost got pushed out of the classroom by sheer force of his ego expanding!
Good Professor.. I have him for intro through upper levels for sociology major.. He taught a lot. I realize more now how good he was. He prepares you for the real world.
Stark is a tough teacher. His exams are 120 questions long and he gives a lot of quizzes. But, if you read the text in time with his syllabus his quiz/exam questions are very straight forward. His lectures don't show up a lot on exams but his stories helped me comprehend the material. I got an A in his class, but worked very hard for it.
DUDE REALLY LOVES HIS KEYBOARD
Stark is one of the worst teacher's I have truly EVER met. He will not help you if asked, and is very very rude to his students. I e-mailed him numerous times and it got me nowhere but more frustrated. BUT I worked very hard, read the book consistenly, and studied weekly for the pop quizzes; earning myself an A in the course-NO thanks to him.
Horrible teacher, expects people to know everything he talks about...including his life story. I got kicked out for eating a single cheez-it...crazy. Leaves no time to finish exams...120 questions for 60 minutes...I'm not a math major...but that only leaves you with 30 seconds a question, you have to know your stuff.
As long as you go to class, take the class and online quizzes you will be fine. the Exams(3) are hard. 120 questions in less than 60 minutes. Overall just pay attention, do good on online tests (you get to use your book) and go to class you will be fine.
Jerry Stark is a great Professor. He is strict, however he prepares you for the real world. His exams are fair, you just have to do your readings and take the online exams. There is definitely enough time. Perhaps other students aren't ready to take this college course since majority of these ratings are immature stating that he's "mean". GROW UP!
Attend every class, no matter how boring the material seems. Quizzes handed out at random, but if you did the week's reading, it's not hard. Exams are tough, but most will finish with 10 minutes or so left in the class. Do all online homework and take good notes and you'll be fine.
Strict teacher&demands respect. As a non-soc major I feel he lacks respect towards those he might think don't care about his class(although I truly did). Refuses to give reviews and you can't question false questions on quizzes that are to help you on exams. 100+ & 5-8 essay questions all in an hour and a half class period is unacceptable!
He is a great teacher. He expects his students to attend class and do their homework. I did and I really enjoyed his class and am looking forward to taking another class taught by him.
Tough but fair. Pay attention, participate, attend class, don't be a whiner. Just do the work and you'll do fine.
He claims dominance over you.
VERY HARD! He was a very rude teacher, always calls people out in class and will ask you to leave, if you are not "paying attention" listen to his rules, or leave class are his guidelines. Dont bother asking for help, all he will tell you is to read the syllabus. If all else fails, sit in the very first row and show intrest in his family.

He is absolutely terrible. if he doesnt like you, you will fail. Avoid him at all costs.
Okay stop hating, he ain't that bad. You just got to go to class, listen and take notes. Don't text or be on your laptop while he's lecturing. DUH, common sense. Its rude. You don't even have to try really, just pay attention. IT AIN'T THAT HARD(: Enjoy suckaaas
He not as bad everyone make him out to be. His test kind of long but easy.If you get know him personalty he is really awesome funny. He just does not up with bone heads who take classes lightly. Welcome to the real world!I am for one glad he kicks people out class. How hard is it to pay attention for an hour. He is very smart once you talk to him!
Very rule orientated. Don't expect any personal exceptions.
Contrary to popular belief, the professor is actually a decent guy. He DOES let you make up test/quizzes for excused absences. The class is really interesting. He is very strict with his rules, and they're all in the syllabus before you come to class. All you have to do is show up, pay attention and take notes. Not that hard. Good class overall.
I also took him for Soc 101, he is more strict in 101 but I like him for 359. He is strict but some times that is the best thing. Do the homework, read the chapters, and go to class and you will be fine.
