Mr. Tate is one of the best math teachers Ive ever had. Kind, patient and caring he really cares if you understand or not. Superb teacher as well as a great person.
This was my first math class in several years since high school. He was very helpful in helping me catch up to the college level. I'd take him again.
Hey guys, are we all talking about the same Mr. Jerry Tate. I don't know about you but I don't appreciate being belittled in front of my peers. In other words Mr. Tate, try being a little more kinder, understanding and helpful in your classes.
He makes easy stuff seems so hard. And his tests are hard too
students beware!!!! He is the worst teacher I have ever come across, be belittled me in class, he made me feel as though I was completely stupid and he would never help me out. He makes things seam 10 times harder then they should be. do NOT take him!!
hard to follow his confusing lectures. He makes alot of mistakes while working problems. Stick to el haj or griffiths.
I don't recommend to anyone to take his class.
Nice Guy. He did give a pop quiz I think the second day of classes. (Not Cool) If you do the homework and the study rewiews for the test...you should do well! ***Just do the homework!!!
I had him for two semesters and got a c in math never has happen before i then took eljah and got an a i would never recommend tate to anyone
if you don't get something from the lecture, stay after class. He'll help you out, no doubt! Never heard ot seen him criticize a student before the class or do anything that hurts the student's feelings
Loved him. Extremely helpful and very pleasant when approached. Never experienced him condescending to anyone. Yeah, you must get the work done. Sorry if you're looking for an easy A, or the good old 'San Jac C'.
i dont recommend anyone take this teacher - any teacher who belittles his students, and then actually has people VOTE on what the answer should be, should not be allowed to teach.
He is a very nice guy but that doesnt help me on passing my test he makes things just a bit difficult. he is a good teacher but sometimes i cant follow. if you are up for a challenge i recommend you take his class otherwise dont do it.
He is an excellent profesor. To get an "A" in his class you have to work very hard, and you will have to do the review because are very helpful. He will help you if you need help on his class and the test are not multiple choice , so that will make your life easy and no homeworks. Is very nice person. He is a good professor.
poor examples and teaching style
As long as you do the homeworks he says goes with each section and understand them and do the reviews you will make an A. His test are exactly like the reviews!
I'm an English major and Math is my worst subject. Prof. Tate was a wonderful teacher and helped me succeed in my required Algebra courses. You need to do the homework to make sure you understand what's going on. He's very willing to meet with students and clear up any confusion they are experiencing in regards to what's going on. A great prof!
he is the most boring teacher ever. He writes out every thing he explains on the board and it takes up most the class time;therefore, you're stuck rushing towards the end of the chapter when its test time. He says he gives partial credit but that is realitive
No Comments
Do NOT take him. He doesnt give partial credit. I made an A in 0306 but made a D in his class. Nice guy overall but NOT a good math teacher.
he is the WORST teacher ever. do not take him! he does not know how to explain things and he says he will help u but when u ask him for help he gets irritated. take anyone but him!!!
Dr. Tate is a wonderful math instructor. If you take the notes he gives you in class and do your homework, you shouldn't have any trouble in his class. As long as you show your work on his tests you can get partial credit on problems.
he is great
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! Take Ann Tate, she is good. He is hard, will not help you unless you are an attractive female and he is butt ugly. He uses the hardest problems for his tests and says he will give you partial credit but see how often that happens, and if you answer correctly and dont show enough work, its wrong! WARNING DO NOT TAKE
He would work a problem and foget what he was doing. i could never follow along he got lost so much. He constanly couldn't remember what problem he was on, and he would write the wrong numbers in the problem and take forever to figure out what he did wrong. it was a waste of time. At least he brought candy the day after halloween.
Professor Tate did a great job! He explained material well, was willing to help when I did not understand, and the tests came from the reviews. Do the homework, work the review, go to class, and you should have no problems.
he is a good teacher. very organized and likes to explain things in class. take notes and do the hw and that A is yours
fabulous teacher, great notes, works each problem step by step.
Dr. Tate was extremely helpful, which was great for me because I'm terrible at math. He made math understandable, and I actually made an A in the class. Homework wasn't mandatory; it's for your own good. If you show it to him on test days he'll give you four bonus points. Great teacher; I highly recommend him.
Mr.Tate is a very helpful teacher he encouraged me a lot and when i actually started doing the work i managed to get a B, you just have to do the work and you will be okay. It's not as hard as people make out to be who are usually the ones that are not paying attetion or not showing up.
If you are decent at math you will do fine in this class. He explains everything he teaches slowly and clearly. I did most of the homework and test reviews and ended with a 98 in the class.
he doesn't explain things well.
Very good teacher. If you do the homework and put an effort into his class it shouldn't be hard. He helps you if only you truely want it.
Mr. Tate is not the best teacher, but not the worst. I am not a math person and i prayed to pass his class with a C. No extra credit, but if you show up for every class, he'll give you a point or two on your final grade. He does not drop any grades. You can look at your tests over the semester to review for your final.
Excellent Professor. I had him for spring 2007 Math 1314, and I liked his class. All you have to do is study his examples, do the home work, come to class, he will always answer your questions. Nothing strange in his tests. Again, Excellent Professor
i have always made A's in math until i took him for college algebra. he rambles on so fast on notes as if u already know everything and he forgets stuff and comes back and adds more. his class was hard for me so i dropped
He gave plenty of examples and made things really simple. Although Algrebra was pretty basic, others seemed to have ease with it if they ASKED for help. Those who didn't are just complainers.
Dr. Tate is the an excellent professor, well organized and very helpful. The negative comments are ridiculous. I had him for intro-Algebra,College Algebra,Trigonomety, and now Pre-Calculus. I have made an A in every class. It was not easy, I had to study alot and go to class, but then school is not about what's easy, it'about learning something.
HORRIBLE and DOESNT HELP AT ALL
OMG! Mr Tate is extremely hard. He really made me feel useless and i dont even suck at math. He makes you do this unecessary homework, like 150 problems a week. Its ridicolous. U suck MR TATE!
Mr. Tate is very good with his students. He is willing to help anyone who asks for help.
Prof. Tate has the one of the biggest hearts at San Jacinto South. For all those people who complain..grow up and become a better students. He gives crystal clear notes NO WAY YOU COULD GET LOST . But if you happen to,ask him he LOVES to help any student.Unlike many,a lot of hw but you will learn and A the test and min a B in the class if u do it
look people, He may his jokes are a little bit corny but who cares he is funny trying to be funny. That stuff DOES NOT MATTER, tho. HE IS A WONDERFUL PROFESSOR !! He is willing to help you at any time as many times as you want.Homework okay yea a lot but it is not mandatory its for your benefit n trust me if you do at least 1/2 u will pass w an A/B
Very helpful teacher, nice guy, makes corny jokes, lot of homework, good reviews, but tests r difficult
His notes are very clear and seems to be a great guy and good teacher but he is extremely old fashioned. He assigns a lot of homework. The tests are all fill in the blank. I took 3 tests and made really bad grades on them even though I was there everyday and made good notes and did my homework. Very hard.
Amazing teacher. He really cares about his students, and his class is pretty entertaining. I would highly recommend him.
Homework is NOT mandatory, though that is where he gets most of his test questions. He goes into vivid detail describing how and why mathematical formulas work. He gives a review that covers all the types of questions that will be on his tests. He ssumes a basic understanding of prerequisites
if you want an easy A stay away from this teacher.his not a bad teacher but you have to work hard to pass his class he does not replace your lowest test grade like other math teacher do and he does not let you use a graphing calculater for your 3 first test. he does not check hw.just to let you know his level of easines out 30 student only 13stayed
If math is your thing, maybe you'll make. If you're looking for a class to teach yourself by reading the book, you've got the right professor. Also, if you don't remember what you learned in 1st to 12th grades you're in the wrong class. The worst class I've ever had.
Ive taken Mr Tate twice now for Algebra and didnt pass either time. I went to the math lab often but got very frustrated. He acts like you are supposed to know everything he teaches already. Smart and good guy, but if you need something more than "you should already know this" dont take him.
i hate this guy he expects everybody to know all this stuff dont take him.
This teacher is all about the lecture and homework. That may sound bad, but he is completely honest about the tests. If you take notes from the board and you get through the sections of homework (not all the work). You will pass! He is very understanding when you have a question about the homework and will talk to you before and after class.
It seems to me like a moderately easy class. Do the homework and you shouldn't have any problem. Attendance and note taking are mandatory, you'll be lost if you miss a day.
Silly teacher, he crack jokes but it's not funny. haha. he expects you to know math basics from trig and college algebra. if you're not great at math or self-teaching, DONT TAKE HIM! but yeah, as long as you do his hw and study hardcore, you'll be fine :]
Very nice man. Very difficult class. Failed this class with a very low F and am retaking it with Lewis. Mandatory note taking and must do homework to pass. Does not allow notecard or drop a test. Good luck.
took him for trig. 8 wk session. class was too rushed and he didn't go over too many important exapmles... i failed all of his tests except for 1... we only took 3 but they were too hard and the time was too limited. i don't recommend him for some1 who hasn't taken math in a while.
WOULD NOT BE MY FIRST CHOICE. Had him for both Trig and PreCal during the 8 week mini session. Does not offer curves on tests or extra credit. Tests are made up of hw problems so hw is crucial. Though I am pretty good when it comes to math, I ended up with a B/C. Don't take him if you're not good at math and don't get overly confident if you are.
Liked this teacher a lot. His explanations were very precise and in depth. I took him for PreCalculus in an 8 week mini course without doing any homework except intense review of notes. Made an A: easy class if you can pass it without doing homework. Come to every class, take notes, pay close attention, and you'll do well.
Very organized lecture in outline form. Examples worked in class are very helpful and cover everything needecd to know in order to do homework problems. Tests are not multiple choice, but he gives partial credit in many circumstances if the answer isn't entirely right. Great professor!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is the worst teacher that I have ever! More then half the class failed. He doesn't give curves, even when the highest grade on his test is a 73. I practically lived in his office trying to understand the material and he just told me that I needed to make trig my world for the next few months. I had other classes too..bad teacher
Extremely strict teacher. He will mark you absent if you are late to class. If he sees your cell phone, he will mark you absent. I would recommend to only take for Precalculus as it is mostly review of algebra and trig concepts. DO NOT TAKE FOR TRIG AND ALGEBRA.
horribleeeeeeee....my only B ever.
Professor doesn't seem to care if you pass or not. He is very strict. Don't take him if you can't teach yourself out of the book. There was times when I would just review the book myself without his lecture and did WAY better than if I had gone to class. I think his lecture only confuses you more.
If you are good at math, Dr. Tate isn't a hard teacher at all. I noticed a lot of people in my class never asked him questions even though he gave them the opportunity to ask every day. The tests are very similar to the homework and the examples he works on the board in class.
I dont know what some of the people below me are talking about. Dr. Tate is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. His lecture is very well structured and he explains difficult concepts in way that's easy to understand. He really cares about his students too. I missed a test because of car troubles and he was very kind in letting me retake.
Test count as 90% and Homework/quizzes on MyMathLab are worth 10% of your overall grade. If you aren't a brainiac when it comes to Algebra then DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Worst Teacher EVER!!!!
I had him for both Trig and Calculus. I don't understand why so many people had trouble in his class, because his classes were pretty straightforward. Do your homework and any review he gives and you can easily make an A. He loves what he does and does it well. Take him if you can fit him in your schedule! He takes time to help his students out.
I hated this class. I got an A in COllege Algebra with Lewis! The best teacher and still did awful. I tried talking to him for help and nothing! I did so bad!
Great teacher! Don't know why so many people slam him? He isn't a breeze, but if you have an average understanding of math and don't mind studying then you will do fine! Very straightforward, tells corny jokes, and has a passion for what he teaches. I recommend him!
Great teacher and Math is not my strong subject. He will spend time to answer even the most obvious questions. I am taking him again for Calculus
GREAT teacher! all you have to do is take notes in class, do your hw in my math lab, and if there are exams, he'll give you a review online and the test is kind of like the review.but overall, he's a great teacher! I would recommend you to take his class.
Professor Tate is a really good teacher! He teaches everything step by step and will gladly answer any questions. His pace was a little slow for me. The only homework he gives in on MyMathLab and there is more than enough time to finish it. No textbook is required.
Also, his tests are very easy if you know what you're doing. He will post up reviews with the answers and go over anything you have trouble with. You will have notes from class that go over everything you need to know. If you did well in math in high school, this class will be a breeze.
Clear lectures, a little repetitive to ensure communication. Usually arrived 2-5min after the class was scheduled to start (at 8AM). A little impersonal in class, but friendly and helpful durring conference hours. I'd recommend.
I took the Pilot Pre-Cal/Trig class. Professor Tate is a really great teacher. He is able to explain math in a way so that everyone understands. He teaches what the student will be tested on and is a great person and great teacher. Make sure to take notes and do the reviews and you'll do well in his class. Take him!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He's really nice and all, but he doesn't explain things very well and acts like you should know everything already. Exams are worth 60% of your grade, the final is 30%, and homework on mathlab is 10%, which if you're struggling is not the way to go at all. I had to drop his class because of it.
His tests are really hard. If you want that A, you will have to work hard for it. Very nice man. Very helpful during lecture and conference. And always willing to help.
He's explains things clearly at a steady pace. Makes it seem pretty simple in class but you HAVE to work hard! Homework isn't for a grade but highly recommended! (Some show up on quizzes or even exams.) I normally enjoy math & don't need a lot of practice but have only passed one exam so far... Textbook is only for homework. Good sense of humor too
I will be honest. He drops your lowest test grade. He explains the material very. He is very willing to help. Lots of homework. BUT HIS TESTS ARE REALLY HARD! Take him at your risk.
He's a nice man, and good at his subject, but very hard if you're not good at math. I did not go to high school and felt there was a huge learning gap in my Precalc class. He does not use MML at all, which really helps me and carried me through 1314. He will answer questions, but it just didn't help me. The tests were hard, and no daily grades.
His class is really hard. I went to the MathLab on a daily basis after class to get clarification on what he taught. I wouldn't take him if you're not strong in math. He gives homework assignments but doesn't take them up at the test like he says he will. I got more help from going to MathLab then to him.
Really kind. He has a quirky sense of humor and he tries beyond limit to help you in every aspect possible. I hate math, I've never understood it but when I went to him, he saw that I was trying and now sometimes I have extra points of my exams.... The worst thing is that his tests are really hard. He makes you work and the homework is brutal.
He is a nice guy and loves to make jokes. However, he only believes in the textbook and nothing else. good luck trying to apply what you think you have learned and hope you can pass the tests. Make sure you are able to get it right the first time because he believes mymathlab is EVIL. if you take his course be prepared to retake algebra again
Good teacher but the only to pass is the test and there no daily grades
Hardest class I have ever taken. It;s pointless to get an A. I would be happy just to get a C. It is possible to get an A. Your insanity is the price.
The most difficult class in my degree; says he gives "partial credit" but only gives partial credit for petty mistakes--any other mistakes, 0 for the question. However, he's a very friendly and helpful guy. Just expect to make this class your LIFE if you want to pass.
Is very precise and clear with lecture material, writes EVERYTHING down so you don't miss any steps. Pay attention, take notes, do all the assigned homework and study until you can understand the material and you will pass. Not an easy class.
Make sure you don't miss any of the written assignments. Ask for help if you need it. Tests are never as hard as the mymathlab homework can be.
Nicest guy ever. Test are very difficult. I had to withdraw from the class so I didn't screw my gpa. Will help you during office hours. Do not recommend taking him for pre-cal.
He is the nicest guy you will ever meet. He stays after& answers questions. There is homework given for each lecture but these are not for a grade. All your grades will be exams &a common assignment. The tests are hard& hes a picky grader. Cal 1 is hard &If you think you'll need daily homework grades to get a descent grade i'd pick another teacher.
Mr. Tate is a very good teacher, his lectures are long and drag on sometimes but he will take the time to answer every question you have in detail. If you skip class you will miss a lot of material. His exams are very straightforward. He is very devoted to helping you outside of the classroom. His class is very hard but he is there to help.
He's my favorite math teacher i've had so far. He has long lectures but he teaches well and is always available to help you after class or whenever he is in his office. You wont ever turn in homework because it's just there for you to do outside of class, so all the grades he puts in are test grades. I would definitely recommend him and retake him.
He is the HARDEST professor ever. There is no daily grades for this class so the only way to pass this class is to PASS THE TESTS. His tests worth 60%, and you have to actually know more than the review that he provided to pass. His lecture are also VERY LONG and he shows you the long ways on how to do it without shortcuts. I do not recommend him.
If you want to pass Math, DO NOT take him. I have to drop this class due to his teaching styles and no daily grades. His test are extremely hard and his review doesn't help at all. If you are like me who is struggling with Math, I wouldn't recommend taking his class. He is very nice to be honest but his test are insanely long and difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE NOT STRONG IN MATH. His lecture are heavy and his test are extremely difficult. He is a nice professor but he is not helpful at all. I would not recommend taking his class if you are not strong in Math.
His Test are very very hard. even if you complete all of the homework that is not mandatory and study the study guide it is still extremely hard. I came into this class confident about math, but left feeling like i was bad at math.
I took him for Precal & Cal. Absolutely amazing. Kindest guy ever. Sure the subject can be hard, but that's why he assigns optional (but highly recommended) HW & test reviews. He is easily accessible outside of class and you can ask him to work out anything for you and he will. He even stays past his open office hours!! Never told me once to leave.
These people who rate him poorly are just flat out liars. His teaching style is A1. He basically does the notes for you in a very organized fashion where it's easy to refer to. It's true that there are no daily grades, but his tests are very much like the test reviews. For the final, he lets you see all exams and take notes from them. Take him!
Awesome teacher. Easy to get A in this class. Just need to practice what he teaches in the class.
Professor Tate is a kind polite teacher, he is willing to help you with any questions. Just do the exercise he advice and you will get a good grade.
Really nice person but not very good at explaining things. He makes things more confusing than they need to be and if you ask him to explain he simply repeats what he said before.
I am honestly shocked that these reviews are so positive, ask to sit-in on a class if you think the average review is accurate BEFORE you sign up. I never heard of a single person on campus talking about his class in a positive manner so ask around if you have to. This should've been the easiest math course for my degree, and it was far from that.
