damn be prepared for a living ****ing hell!!!!!! a **** load of homework is all I gotta say. Not a bad guy, is pertty cool actually. He doesnt trip to much if things are a day late but the amount of work is over whelming.
His class is a lot of work, and even though it could be stressful, he was one of my favorite teachers. He is fair and goes out of his way to help you succeed. You can tell he cares about his students.
He is the worst teacher I have ever seen. Be very careful to choose him because 100% you will be disaffected, like me.
Jess is a cool guy, yes there is a bit of homework but it is not too hard, the only thing I didn't like is how much socializing we have to do with the rest of the class, a lot of group work, not my thing. I would take another class of his.
He has way to much socializing, and a lot of homework, but lets you turn it in late.
Too much homework. If your full time or even part time don't take him. t was pretty easy at the begining but at the end it becomes very stressful to many things at once .not very clear and disorganised
i enjoyed this class. despite the mass ammount of work, jess is a good teacher.
I enjoyed the class because he lets the students decide what to write about. Although there is a lot of work, as long as you do your work, it is an easy A. and yes there's a lot of group works.
The best english teacher I ever had!!! His lectures are meaningfull and he teaches beyond what you need to know in class. Although it is a lot of work, but it does pay off at the end and it's never just busy work. As long as you keep doing you're hw and don't slack off you'll get a good grade.
A lot of homework, a lot of time. But at the end of the day when all is said and done you will be a better writer for it.
Most frustrating class ever. I took it ib the summer so it felt like a lot of work and it probably was.The research paper thesis was the most frustrating thing I've ever dealt with.He has to approve your thesis and he never liked mine and wasn't clear with what he wanted.I finally wrote up something else-he loved it and i got an A.Sooooo frustratin
The teacher gave way too much work even for an english class! His directions and assignments were unclear and he gave minimal help to his students. I greatly disliked the class even though he gave me an A in the end. Stay away from this teacher if you do not want to be made a slave laborer!
I had Mr. Lerma for Summer School English 1A. It wasnt really that hard, you do the work and you get a B. He really explained the work if you asked him and sometimes he would extend the time.

Does not seem very eager to help
huge load of work, unclear directions, and annoyance when asked for help. very opinionated when it comes to reading student's papers, and he is EXTREMELY vague...
I took this class online - I find it strange that other people said that he wasn't helpful- Mr. Lerma was the first teacher to ever help me that much on an individual level - maybe he's a different teacher online....class was difficult, there's a lot of work, but if you ask for help, you will get it.
Mr. Lerma is helpful, flexible and assignments are fun. His online 1B class is neat. Posting assignments on the board is fun. Extra credit work available or ask like I did. Class works together, and its fun. Lerma answers e-mail fast and accurate. His assignments are meaningful. I really like the Summer 1B class, but does require some work.
Awsome teacher! Lots of grace! Very understanding and helpful.
Lerma is a nice instructor. his summer class was worht taking. Only, like all summer classes- lots of homework. You get credit for all homework. Lerma is nice about grades. It was not too hard to make a high grade if you did all the work on time and try hard to improve. take this class! lots of people dropped, but lots really had a lot of fun.
I found his assignments to be ridiculous and a waste of time. His directions are vague, and he says that he doesn't expect you to be a great writer but at the same times asks you to find an extremely deeper meaning in writing without summarizing. If he is the only instructor left and you have to take 1B, wait until next semester.
bad class. dont take him. he wants you to write about deeper meaning of stupid poetry without explaining what to do and without being allowed to summarize anything. its difficult and unclear and stressful. he doesnt seem to care if you want help.
Pretty easy going, not too hard on you. He does give a lot of homework though
seems like he is a nice guy who really does want people to pass his class, but his directions are incredibly unclear, he relies too much on Angel to post assignments. And like other people have said, he says he doesn't expect super excellent writing, but then gives you a C on an essay because you didn't get deep enough meaning without summarization
You need to go to class and do all of the ridiculous amounts of assignments he assigns. It is extremely hard and very similar to my classes at a private high school. He doesnt explain anything, he expects you to know what he wants. So I say take english with pape!
This class is certainly the worst I have ever taken. All of the assignments were VERY unclear, it would take an hour just to figure out what he wanted us to write about! Workload is very heavy. He is NEVER available for "office hours." He took over 6 weeks to return a 4 page essay! Do yourself a favor and DONT take this professor!
I didn't learn that much from this teacher. He expects our papers to get better as the semester progresses, but does not TEACH us what to improve. No teaching going on...just assignments piled on assignments.
His method is teaching to think critically, learn by doing and is readily available to help if you take the time. You have do to actually work in this class. As long as you are interested in learning & do all the assignments you will be fine. The assignments aren?t as specific because he wants you to learn to think for yourself. No lazy people!!!!!
It's a mystery how he became an English teacher. His feedback on papers does not make sense, in light of everything learned in previous English courses.
Agree with the person below me! Bad papers get good grades and good papers get bad grades. Everything learned in 1A won't help you here! I turn the other direction and RUN
Mr. Lerma was slightly on the tough side. He's a nice guy, but his attendance policy was a little harsh. I understand the importance of showing up to class but things happen. I felt as if he left most of the teaching to the students. Yes, it's a critical thinking class, but we're not teachers! Someone needs to guide us!
Nice guy but horrible teacher. Canceled class several times and was EXTREMELY vague. Feedback on papers was not helpful. Most of the class dropped.
I found Lerma to be fair and organized. He wants students to work. That means reading and lots of papers. He is critical, but that is what college is for. I found him helpful and easy to access with questions about course content.
I am only in the 3rd week of class and i'm not very pleased with this teacher so far. He doesn't check his e-mail very often, which he says is the best way to get a hold of him, and does not check his email at all during the weekends which i thought was not very helpful considering he is teaching an online course and assignments are due mon. at 7am
I was going to save my review until after I completed my class. I have 1 month left and this is a nightmare. I took this online thinking I could get the work done at my own pace. There is no pace. No returned emails, assignments very vague and I have learned nothing. I am afraid that when I take my next English class I will fail. Do not take!!!!!
This class was online, he was un clear about the due dates and what he really wanted from us and replied to emails very late so I had no way of contacting him.
Don't take this guy online! He's terrible at helping, doesn't check his email very often, and is extremely unfair with his grading. All my grades were about a full letter lower than I would have gotten from any other teacher and biased. Due dates and assignments were confusing and contradicting. MISERABLE semester, and one of my biggest regrets
Just finished semester. Passed but this was a total joke. How can anyone give this professor a good rating. Never there, never helps, nothing learned. 65 students enrolled in the beginning-finished with 6. Everyone dropped. DO NOT TAKE. Did not learn squat! Prof. seriously needs 2 read these reviews. Obviously doesn't enjoy his job. This is sad
This teacher was horrible. Assignments were 80% unclear. He didn't check emails reg. Our class went from 65 to 6 students. I would not recomend this teacher to anyone. Papers were graded with the same comments to everyone, come on,there were only 6 of us left, how hard is it to teach. I didn't learn much,I'll have a hard time in Eng 1A because of him
Did not appear to be interested in the class always late with assignments.
This guy was really super amazing! Anytime I had a question to ask about an assignment he was there to answer. He was there at anytime I needed to talk to him in private and understood about absences. He also gave out a schedule of the entire semester so no one would be lost. I'm glad I had his class.
i hope you like community service if your taking this class..cuz your assigned 8 hours
Terrible
He was very unclear about what he wanted for essays. He was unorganized and never handed back assignments on time. Overall a horrible teacher.
Took this online English 1C course... his grading is extremely difficult and the class was beyond confusing due to different due dates every single week. Also he would constantly tell me that he didn't receive my papers when I turned them in on time. Stressful class.
He is very unclear about what he expects in his essays
Did not write as many papers as some. Instead we re-wrote or fixed our paper. Which helped us understand what we did wrong. Very helpful, unless you are not trying. Did not give a list of specifics for each paper. Instead gave us a general idea & let us run with it. Has everyone split into groups at start, so choose your group carefully!!!
Mr. Lerma is a poor teacher all around. He is very unorganized, unclear on his expectations, and not at all helpful. There are lots of teachers in the West Valley English department that I loved and would highly recommend, and he is NOT one of them.
Terrible teacher. Never responded to emails, made confusing assignments, gave poor grades, and never told us what we were doing wrong. Destroyed my interest in English and ruined my semester.
Wow... One of THE worst teachers I've ever had in my life. I have never heard of an ENGLISH prof. with poor grammar and spelling. If you're going to dish out, you should at least know how to spell. Harshly graded. Worked for weeks on papers. Poor communication. Poorly described assignments. Seemingly short and rude in emails. Very dissatisfied.
Worst english teacher I ever took. He is not clear on what he wants in the papers he assigns. not very helpful with questions you have he just leaves you still wondering on what to do. homework he assigned was all pointless and a waste of time. teaching skills were horrible and leaves everything for the end of the semester..stressful class
Worst English teacher I've ever seen. Makes terrible use of class time, doesn't elaborate on assignments or expectations at all, uses poor examples, and seemingly pulls grades for papers out of a hat. Comments on papers are poorly thought out and simply not helpful. I'm frequently left wondering if he reads the papers at all.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS TEACHER. He is more likely to make you feel insignificant than try and help you learn. Obnoxiously lazy, does not grade papers on time, if at all and grading is very general, nothing that helps. Extremely tough grader for no reason whatsoever. Does not care abut his students, not sure why he wanted to teach, he's awful
Surprised to see so many harsh comments - he is a great guy and a fun teacher. You even get extra credit just for showing up to every class. Yes, he isn't an easy grader, but he always gives you the option of rewriting for a new grade. Class is NOT for slackers, but an A is definitely attainable if you (just do all the work)...
Basically, go to class everyday. Do every assignment and make sure you ask him directly what you did wrong on assignments because if not, you'll never know. He's unclear in his grading or what he expects. His class isn't impossible, just a pain.
He is a very smart teacher who is willing to help if you make the effort to ask for it. Gives a ton of homework and attendance is a must. Work a lot in groups which is very fun.
If you have to work do not take this guy. Group project is a community service assignment that is time consuming. Take someone else whose workload is doable and you can get along with.
He is very friendly and funny, Mr Lerma loves to help you with anything you need. He is not clear on what he wants you to write about but he is not harsh on essays and wants you to learn how to revise as much as possible. He tells you exactly what you need to do in order to pass the class at the end of your semester during your conference with him
Good guy. Very helpful teacher gives you a ton of advise on all your papers. If you Work hard and do all your homework this class is easy.
Absolutely excellent teacher. He's fun and topics chosen for papers are compelling. Don't expect an easy ride. You shouldn't -- this is college. He is fair with grading, and will grade you based on what he thinks you can do. Turn around time on grades was 1-2 weeks for major papers -- completely normal. Papers can be revised as well. Easy.
Super ambiguous w/ what he wants for essays. willing to talk to you but essentially sends you on a goose chase. useless teacher that has horrible grammar and spells with a lot of mistakes. disrespectful to students. the class is a lot of work and super hard. i took it over summer so it may be easier in fall/spring. base your essays off the examples
Great teacher, I had him for 1a and although I received a c he was very nice and as long as you put forth the effort and show him that you are really trying he will pass you.
1. Makes you review 2 of your classmates papers and really critique and give them suggestions. 2. He isn't clear about his instructions and there is no place where you can find a list of assignments and when they are due. 3. He wants you to do the work but doesn't want to help you do it. Do not take him!
I don't like English courses or writing very much but I actually had some fun with the reading and research in this class. He is a very fair grader, I believe that about anybody could pass this class pretty easily, this is coming from someone who has failed two English 1b classes prior to taking this one. Great teacher!
He is friendly and funny, but he grades very hard and is not clear on what he wants. After meeting with him I spent 2 hours revising my paper and he only gave me 1 more point. Nice guy, but I would not recommend.
He was the worst English teacher I have ever had! He had too high expectations. He was not clear at all on the assignments. Once, he said that the assignment for the week was due on Tuesday, but when I tried to submit it then, he told me that it was due on Monday, not Tuesday, and he gave me a zero on it. Really frustrating! DO NOT take his class!!
Mr. Lerma is not a easy professor and he's always pushing you to do your best. He's not a hard grader, you just need to follow instructions and take time to work on the assignments. Don't expect it to be a easy class and that you'll get A in all your essays - this is college! Fast paced class but I really enjoyed it.
He does not grade, he makes you use a site called turnitin . com, which is a plagiarism checker. He uses their grading function instead of doing his job. Online course format was extremely chaotic and not easy to learn anything. Comic books and movies don't have a place in a college level English course. I'd rather not graduate than take him again.
i had him and when i would do my essays and such i would think i did really good when actually i failed. he grades really hard i would not take him
Mr. Lerma is one of the best english teachers I have ever had. He is clear on what he wants and his assignment are not very difficult. He wants you do to well in class. Me. Lerma is the best.
Best teacher out there. If you want an easy A probably not your teacher, but he will change the way you think about English. Don't get me wrong it's easy to get A as long as you put in the effort. Just do the homework and participate and you'll do great. Also he makes scones.. like amazing ones! Long story short. You want a great teacher, take him.
One of the toughest teachers for English that I have ever had. He says he's there to help his students and wants them to succeed but only whenever is convenient for him. He is also a very difficult grader. I polled the class and most students received a C on there first paper. Although the books were somewhat enjoyable, don't expect and easy A.
I really enjoy Lerma as a professor. He is a tough essay grader, which first messes with my writting confidence, but by the end of the semester I feel like a much stronger writter. He can be a little scattered but he is also very accomidating and there for you when you need help. Expect group collaborations and food.
Lerm is aight. Didn't assist the class too much in 905. I don't think I'd take him again if I had the chance to choose.
His class is not necessarily the hardest, but he is so picky about everything. He is hard to compromise with and the assignments can be tedious. Would have taken this class with a different teacher had I known how stressful his class would be.
worst. class. ever. I would 100% drop if it wasn't too late
Awful directions, unclear due dates, harsh grading. He doesnt even update papers from spring semester so dates are always off
I hate him. This class is awful and frustrating.
If you're confused, the internet is the place to go for help rather than the teacher himself.
Can be a tough grader but he really cares about giving his students a quality education. If you're looking to just "get by" in class, he isn't the professor for you. He actually helps his students grow as writers but you have to be willing to work hard and grow from criticism.
Mr. Lerma is an excellent instructor that uses multiple methods to teach. His methods are cutting edge and he is able to connect obsolete teaching methods into the contemporary teaching. This is particularly effective for the older or returning student. His expertise is demonstrated in each class and he enjoys excellent relations with his class.
Ugh. This class was a hassle, and he was so unorganized. Even though it was an on-campus class, it was run online. Not all of his links to assignments worked, and he didn't respond to emails quickly. He created groups at the beginning of class, which stayed with you throughout the semester. He also was a really tough grader on essays.
This class is such a headache. He posts all of the homework assignments/links to whatever on Angel which is organized into folders depending on what week of the semester you're currently in but finding what you need in the folder is beyond hard. Save yourself the hassle of Lerma's class and just wait till the following semester to take English1B.
Worst teacher I've had ever. Wont clarifying more on what is needed to pass, and when finally a response is given, its delivered in a degrading mocking tone. Unclear instructions & messy Angel links. If its not his way, then its the high way. Really college peers, just take that early A.M. class or weekend class, instead of this online course.
So much work in this class. Very unorganized website that he hasnt changed for years so he doesnt even remember whats on there. Lots of books, seminars, and papers. Probably one of the hardest classes ive taken considering the workload. And he grades very harshly. As a person he's funny and cares about his students but not a fan of his teaching
Lerma is an intelligent man who cares deeply about his students and tries to make the curriculum he teaches fun. Having taken his class I learned to push myself harder in my academics than ever before. In simple terms, you get the grade you work for with Lerma. If you want to improve your English skills he's your guy, if not look elsewhere.
At first I thought he would be a great teacher for 1C. Turns out he's not. He grades papers very hard and rarely provides + feedback. Mr. teacher paper perfect much? He just doesn't consider his students as having a life. Online class deadlines were weekly, no complain about that, but it was way too much. Rude at times. Would not take again.
He's a very tough grader, but has very clear guidelines. He's very personable & makes the class enjoyable. It was very easy to reach him, and he always offered a grace period to redo an essay you performed poorly on. So long as you put in the time, you'll be able to pull off a B.
Lerma has become one of my favorite English professors, I am now taking him again for English 1C. You WILL have to read, but like he told us that is a part of college if you are trying to be successful. He will help you when you need it, just be sure to do the work and you will pass.
u guys describe him as a great teacher at WestValley College. First of all, he doesn't teach. He gives you a grade between C or B then he makes you do presentation and class discussion and seminar and reading article and novels and poetry. Overwhelming and it is just way too much. Don't take him, you will fail all your other classes due to reading
Very nice in class but rarely spends time actually teaching. Helpful during office hours (but in a hurry). Extremely vague concerning what he actually wants as far as the papers go. Class was very disorganized (recycled from other classes). For some of his papers, he has conflicting requirements (be more specific, no non-class-material citations).
The teacher is great/funny, but is really lazy and does not teach much. A lot of times, he's really vague on requirements for assignments. When asking for help, it feels that that you're being rushed and more than often, the tips/feedbacks are not that specifically insightful/helpful.
This class deeply frustrated me. Mr. Lerma grades the papers strangely: on a scale between 0 and 78 out of 100. It makes no sense! I started to dread writing papers, avoiding them because I knew he wasn't really going to enjoy them. Not beneficial, especially in one of my favorite subjects. He'd be a great teacher if he changed the grading system.
Run away; you've been warned. You will severely regret taking this class. This man seems to believe that English 1B means that you are a literary expert now.
The class material is about monsters and throughout the semester, there are no variations. The class is boring, and the teacher doesn't reach out outside of the class material. Grades unfairly AND graded the final paper the day final grades had to be turned in. There was no explanation as to such grade, no feedback or time for questions, mediocre.
I really don't understand all the negative reviews of Lerma. I found his class to be very refreshing. He is clear with his expectations and grading. I enjoyed the amount of freedom given to us in the writing assignments, most professors don't allow as much creative freedom. This class made me work for an A, but I respect that.
I had never taken an English class where the teacher couldn't care less about the students' learning. The highest scores on assignments can be checked in Canvas and the scores on papers never exceeded 78-80. Advice to Lerma: if all your students are averaging C-plusses and low B's on papers, you need to reevaluate your teaching and/or grading.
Paper heavy. Graded on few things. No clear grading criteria. Constructive comments on papers DID NOT HELP AT ALL. 0/10 would recommend!!!!!!!!!
Not a bad teacher overall, but has a very weird grading system, especially for the essays. His comments on the essays does not help at all, and even with revision, I never obtained a grade higher than a C+. I would NOT recommend this teacher
Mr. Lerma was the worst college professor I've had thus far. He was extremely condescending. He did not give higher than a C on any assignment, making it impossible to succeed in his class. His comments on assignments were vague and unhelpful. PLEASE TAKE MY WARNING AND DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS ESPECIALLY ONLINE!!! xoxo good luck
Lerma is nice guy and has generous office hours. However, his grading policy is very confusing. He is a very harsh grader ( D- was average grade on the first essay) but does not specify exactly what he wants when assigning paper in the first place. Comments on graded essays not very helpful. Workload wasn't bad but won't accept late work whatsoever
Make sure he is very clear about his test instructions because he could change things around, and make you sound like you're at fault.
I have taken both English 1A and English 1B online with professor Lerma. I think his class was great and his grading policy was not confusing at all. He seems like he genuinely cares about everyone understanding. There are about 1-2 assignments and discussions due every week. We also read a few books and wrote papers after reading them.
Jess Lerma was absolutely outstanding. I took him a few years ago for English 1A and 1B -- both classes, show up, listen, be respectful and pay attention. Had no problem getting an A. He's an awesome instructor and terrific human being.
I took English 1B online. He was a really slow grader. He always criticized my essays for not being too argumentative, and always said I had too many quotes. I felt like I was doing everything wrong in his class. I wish I had taken another English 1B teacher. I highly suggest you don't take his class. He seemed out of order.
Professor Lerma is a good teacher but he is such a tough grader and he is not very specific when giving feedback. I typically love English but he made me hate it even more.
He is kind and certainly cares about the well being of his students. I think the grades he gives on essays and tests (which pretty much decide your grade) do not accurately reflect the quality and effort put into them. After asking the entire class, I found out that he never gives higher than a B- on essays. The only B I ever got in college.
Grades harshly and without giving a specific rubric. Dont waste time taking this class.
6 week online summer class. Discussion posts, hw responses, & 4 papers. 2 are class papers, 1 midterm paper, & 1 research paper. He grades tough on essays. Reading genre is gothic and lit. We read Walking Dead the comic for class. Good teacher. Course is challenging but manageable, would be tough if you work fulltime due to accelerated workload.
AVOID at all costs. He will assign very vague essays with confusing points to tie together. He will then give you a C on an A level paper just so you have to do the essay revisions. He will give very vague comments as feedback to your essay. You will do the revisions and he will give you only 2 points back. He pretends he cares but he doesn't.
Feedback given on the papers is contradicting, especially when speaking to the whole class. Communicates ehhh. Not the worst class ever, but don't expect to strengthen your writing skills by that much. Participate often in discussion posts and talk in contribute to class discussions and you're good to go. Nice guy though!
Took him for Fall online classes. He's self-contradicting, super confusing when explaining assignments and nothing makes any sense at all. On essay rubrics, he wants someone else, not what's written. Seems irritated when asked questions. Everyone was confused. Lots of essays. Talks a lot Hard to find material. Avoid at all cost PLEASE listen to me.
I had Lerma for my Fall 2020 semester. Professor Lerma is by no means a terrible person, but he is unpleasable as a teacher. He's been through so many papers already that it'll take a lifetime to write him something that he'd find new and interesting. Don't expect to get an A on any papers, even if you thought you put your heart and soul into it.
Hes a nice person but he grades essays with no credit to how much work you put in. Gives low grades with contradicting feed back.
Good person but struggles to connect. Wants people to ask questions but is irritated when they do. Feedback is contradicting/changes often. When change work to fit into what he wants, he'll change his mind again. It's a endless hole. Work isn't horrible, but has no set rubric so you don't know what to do to. Just avoid. If u can't, Godspeed.
This is my second attempt taking English 001B and i got to say I might not have got the best grade but i put the bare minimum effort in this class and I almost got a B in this class. It is fun and actually interesting what we got to read. Yes it may get boring at times but it is english and just got to suck it up and deal with it unfortunately
Not sure why he's received so many bad reviews. In comparison to the other teacher I had this semester, Lerma is awesome. He is a tough grader but is helpful if you ask. Work is fairly easy to complete aside from essays which can be challenging. This class is also slow paced and does not move from one concept to another too quickly.
Instructor Lerma was good. There is a lot of writing in this class but he does help you get set up with each big paper. He is a pretty hard grader so I would definitely pay attention to the rubics. Pay close attention to the MLA status and how you are citing. Feedback each week is okay.
Horrible Professor. Does not care about his students at all. Do not take this class. He grades essays from a scale of 0-79. I put in hours and hours in my papers and received a C on every single one. So much work for a subject that literally no one cares about.
I liked professor Lerma because he knew what he was talking about and the course was engaging. he very clearly tries to mitigate the workload so you don't get overwhelmed although you are reasonably challenged. I think his course was a satisfactory extension of my high school work and he is very empathetic and accessible for help. my fave at WV
He's cool- lots of interesting things discussed.
took him last summer. did all work on time and spent hours on papers. the highs were all low 80s and he doesn't curve. easy to get a B in the class, impossible to get an A
Professor Lerma's ENG1B class is pretty good. He's knowledgeable and the course is engaging, but the grading can be tough. Attending lectures and using resources like the textbook and unstuck AI are key to success. Overall a worthwhile class.
3 main HEAVY + LONG papers (altho SLO might change in upcoming year). His lectures lean more towards class discussions, and take time to be appreciated. Participating helps turn ur gears, bc the topics in class set up ur papers, even if it doesnt look like it at the time. Super ready to give u GOOD critiques for ur papers before theyre due.
He's a yapper then complains about wishing to have enough time to teach. Preaches about reaching out for help and the importance of communication, but when you do, does nothing to help you despite circumstances. When grading assignments, he's stingy with giving full points. Spend half the class in group discussions. Class is not hard but very meh.
Great teacher, even through an online class, you can see he really cares about his students. If you reach out he'll help. But class is graded on very few things, so if you miss one assignment your grade will drop from A to B. Keep that in mind, and don't generate your papers, and the class is an easy A.
