I agree. Great lectures. Expect to take learning as serious as he takes teaching
Round and round he goes.... Most confused teacher I ever had.

Gives BAD funny! Sarcastic, demeaning, arrogant, boring - not a happy guy!
lectures are unclear, confusing, makes you hate sociology
If sociology is your thing, he can inspire you; don't expect easy marks though
A good teacher if you're willing to work hard and pay attention
best soc course i have ever taken, best prof as well, the man is wise.
this guy loves learning & teaching - 1st prof. I've met that respects students
challenging, thought-provoking lectures, best as a second year soc prof
While he is an easy-going teacher, he is very difficult to pay attention to. His monotone style of teaching and rambling gets a bit over-bearing to handle. Worse yet, it is extremely difficult to concentrate on what he is saying.
...looks like Simon from American Idol.
Lecture style is a bit monotonous. He definitely knows what he's talking about, but he needs to find a better way to present it. I somehow become instantly tired as soon as the class begins.
fair, respectful, enjoys teaching, cares about what his students think. particpation will get you more far and make the class more interesting. don't take his class if you are looking for easy marks or aren't interested in soci. cancels class often.
the exams are hard !!! have essay in his final
Jesse is awesome....He's super intelligent and respectful,he is most likely my favorite prof at Langara.....and he's pretty sexy!!!
he makes his lectures really interesting. But sometimes he isnt clear. He always misses a lot of classes. so you only end up going to 3/4 of the semester classes.
I though he was great, a overall good guy. Easy tests and good lectures ,you have to attend class. He misses alot of classes which is a good thing. Usually Wednesdays, you get off early too!
He is a great guy, although he does miss a few classes, you can learn a lot from him. He also seems to be a bit intimidating, but once you get over that, he can provide help if you don't understand something.
great guy and a great teacher, I would highly recomend him. He misses alot of classes too, which is a good thing.
I took him for 1120 and 1121! He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Class is really interesting. He is a great guy and not to bad on the eyes..lol..A good teacher overall.
He is a really interesting guy, knows what he is doing, but sometimes he can be a little confusing. If you listen, take notes and ask if you don't understand, you will do good in his class (he is a little hot too)! Recommended!
hes not hot first of all.but he is helpful and encourages questions.u have to attend lectures if u want to do well even tho they are quite dry.

listen carefully to his lectures you won't regret :)

Overall I thought Jesse was a good prof, but then I found the course a bit dry. As long as you take good lecture notes and see the connection between the readings and the concepts you will do well. don't let the first midterm discourage you
so dry!!! had him 1st year and he was easy. 2nd year he put me to sleep, he's certafiable. Which made him un-hot
I really enjoyed his class, I thind he's a great guy and I am now going to take another soci class with him!!! You have to show to every class though or you will be lost
very hot, very very hot
hot, soooooooooo hot,..... And yes, he is a good teacher too. I'ts not that hard to get a good mark, taking notes and regular attendence is very important. He's awesome. Did I mention HOT?!
You have to go to his classes, if not you won't do well. Make sure you write good notes, then you should do fine.and he tells u exactly what's on the 2nd exam.
Heh, Seary is HOT, and a good teacher. He's got his way of presenting the info to the class, and if you are on the same wave as him, no doubt you'll do well. He's a bit sarcastic, and quite an intelligent guy. Highly reccomended for those of you who can think for yourself and get out of the box.
I just took this class for fun and didnt think I would take much intrest in it. However, having Dr.Seary as my professor made it very intresting and I very much enjoyed it.
seary is a very smart guy. his class discussions are always profoundly interesting. you may trail off a little listening to him sometimes if you don't do the readings. fairly easy marker. he wears tight jeans that certainly inspired me to go to class.......mmmmmm.....seary...
THEORY, emphasis here: this is quite a philosophical course. I'm not inclined to think abstractly so it was hard. But INTERESTING!
he is a very helpful prof with a great attitude. although some topics were more interesting than others, i found the course as a whole very enlightening.
Dr. Seary is very enthusiastic & he tells u only need to know the most GENERAL concepts. That means u don't have to care about every tedious detail(as in math or english). Not too much readings. Lectures are sometimes hard to understand because he doesn't give certain real-life examples.
You'll never understand ALL of his lectures, but that doesn't mean anything bad. Basking in his intelligence makes me feel important. His intellectual intimidation is sexy to all the girls and he apparently makes them swoon. So girls, if you want a hot man to send you through the roof, take him!!!
How to do well. Take notes and show up to class. There are not many readings and tests are based mainly of the lectures. He tells you what is going to be on the tests. He structures his lectures well and they are easy to follow if you show up regularly. What more can you ask for.
first test easy, 2nd one killed me, notes simple just write them and your good. last half of semester the worst marx and state stuff the hardest the rest easy take him (hes away lots)
He was hard, and he was a little full of himself ("DOCTOR Seary, not Mr Seary"). Not very chill environment for a class. Maybe that's good for Sociology...
If you like to be yelled at for daring to ask a question take him. If you like to learn about sociology DON'T take him. A really stupid idiot.
Seary is a generally a hard professor. He often uses his large vocabulary. First test was easy, second test was so hard. Take notes in class. I wasn't used to the way he wrote notes, maybe that's why he was hard and I couldn't really put the information together. The good thing is that he is extremely helpful.

Very good teacher. It seems the ladies like him. It must be the motorcycle. He gives good, easy to follow notes. If you do not daydream. Do not skip class. He tells you exactly what is on the test, so no excuses. You should find his lectures interesting. If you are not a critical thinker, or are an aspiring accountant do not take this class.
ahhhh gosh.. ok im taking this class cuz i have to not cuz i want to..and i hate it!! i love sociology but not this class. so far from all the socio teachers at langara aviod him and albanese ! take indiara natash phrast if u can! uhh.. i think this
Seary is the best teacher I have had so far at Langara. He actually challenges me and engages me in the material, he doesn't spoon feed you like most other teachers at Langara. His class is my favorite and I am looking foreward to taking more classes with him.
An arrogant prick. He's probably the worst teacher I've ever had.
What a great prof! I think he is the best. Take him and you will learn to love sociology just like him.
Wow!! I love sociology so much and its all Jesses fault! He is really a fantastic teacher and Langara is LUCKY to have him on staff. He seriously rocks! The class is great too. He really makes you think and will make you love sociology!! :)
I have mixed feelings. Some days he is very helpful, others I just found him discouraging. However, this class is one of the most stimulating I have taken and he is very passionate about the subject and does make you think. Problem is he puts a lot of pressure on his students and when it comes time to actually take a test or do an essay...panic
He can seam like a jerk at first but he is truly genuine and cares about people and how his students are doing. Hid door is open outside of class time and he is very helpful if you show interest. He challenges his students and has high expectations because he loves what he teaches and believes in it. It's worth it to be in class and do the readings
This was by far my most favorite class. His style is so personal and direct it might make some uncomfortable at first but everyone should take a course with an intructor like this. This is what school should be about...actually using your mind.
Hes a real good teacher to learn from if your interested in going to UBC OR SFU. If you read the suggested readings you will do good. If you dont like to read and to learn then good luck getting a pass. Over all I enjoyed his class and learned alot, and Im not that smart, so think about it.
Nice guy, dont be late for his class, really approachable, kinda intimidating but this guy is a good teacher, he knows what his doing.. cracks a joke from time to time and yeah.. take his course!
seary is a little too univ. for first year coll.if you are a real critical thinker he will inspire you. he is very carismatic.a rebel james dean-like character that all of the ladies love and all of the men want to be like.he definetly made me say, :i want to be like that.make sure you write down what he says to clarify your notes and ask ?'s.
Seary is a classic hard-core academic. A little brusque at times, but I like his style. I took Sociology as a required course, and unfortunately I got a little burnt-out by the end of it, but I'd defintely take another class with Seary were he teaching, say, History or Philosophy.
I have never had a teacher like this. he is so into his work that you cant help but fall in love with sociology. might change my major because of dr.seary. stoked for his 2200 theory class. you must take his class!!!!!
I took this course as an elective and found an unidentified interest in the sociological world. Jesse has an extraordinary style when teaching this subject -- he's inspirational. He does challenge perceptions and expects alot from his students. No easy marks here.
Jesse is fair, helpful, insightful, genuine -- definitely one of my favourites. You'll know exactly what's expected of you, do it and you'll be rewarded. Attendance and in-class note taking are vital. Ask if you need clarification on your notes. Very clear on what's examinable, so you'll be well prepared. Loved this course. Can't say enough.
jesse can be tough, but he has a passion for sociology! Always helps when asked. Just do your readings and take notes, you'll love his class. =)
Everytime I walk into his class, I know it will be boring. Everytime I walk out, I'm confused. Asking him a question, a partial answer will be the output...:(, and you are still confused. The material taught is NOT spoonfed, and he explains it with huge vocab. At least his class has no paper and he is easygoing/nice... not the easiest prof.
he's ok. quite characteristic. not very organized tho.
um...charismatic? how did you manage to graduate high school?!
I had Jesse a few years back and he's still my favorite Prof. He challenged me and taught me to be accountable for my education. I had been voted to ask him not to use such big words in class. He told me to buy a dictionary - that he wouldn't dummy down the class cause I was lazy. He had us read "Social Things" now iam 1cr away from Hons.Soc BA
Give this class a chance... a few weeks, then make up your mind. It starts a bit dry, but then, you look forward to going to class. Nice professor, a bit intimidating, but wants his students to succeed. He'll let you know what he expects, do it and you will succeed. Take good notes, don't sleep, pay attention, do the readings. Fair prof :)
this guy is just not a good teacher. barely any readings and its all lecture, but its super confusing so you don't understand it. if you have a large vocab it helps as he uses alot of big intimidating words. midterm 1 is easier, midterm 2 screwed me. i would have rather taken another prof that would hav made me enjoy the subject more
Jesse is the guru of the church of modern day sociology. He does not spoon feed a bunch of spoiled brats who think they are smart because they get A's in the vast number of dummed down classes at langara. Jesse will make you work, will chew you up and spit you out, but it will be the most rewarding class you have taken yet., if you are not a sheep.
omfg where do i begin. his lectures are boring. his tests are stupid. so short. if u mess up one question your screwed. he puts bs on the final that isn't even suppost to be on it. 3 questions is so stupid for a final. i hate him
CANCELS CLASS EVERY SECOND WEDNESDAY so if its your only class then check before leaving ur house. He is clear and excited about sociology, but moves very fast and gives hard tests.
his class was the worst i've ever taken, i learned nothing. He was not only boring but very unclear. I left ever class going what was that all about. I do not reccommend him at all.
Jesse is such an awesome teacher as I learned so much from him. I had no idea what to expect from this course and he really opened my eyes to the world. Don't leave Langara without sitting in Jesse's class!!
I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about. I remember enjoying his class. He is repetitive, but the way in which he presented information tended to stick rather well in my head. I found him to be clear, and the information easy to absorb. I remember thinking that his was the only class in which I learned anything.
He's really not a big deal. Take notes all class, go home and condense them and you have a study guide for the exam. He won't change your life, but he also won't ruin it if you show up to class and stay awake. If you want an A and you work for it, you get it.
Awesome teacher. Totally inspiring and opens up a new world for you. Lessons never boring and easy to follow. He explains the concepts very clearly as well.
He's a good teacher, definately not a life-changer. The content he teaches is the interesting bit. VERY difficult tests. Make sure to read the textbook and take lots of lecture notes. And don't even think of skipping classes if you want to do well.
he's a great teach. not a hard marker. essays.take his class.
he's a pretty good prof aside from his arrogance which at times can get a bit annoying. his tests arent too bad if you study. he goes over things very clearly and at a decent pace. over all, hes not bad at all
The man's hot - let's face it, so he's easy to listen to. His lectures are easy to follow and are interesting. Take lots of notes, contribute to discussion, and you'll do well. I like the fact that he has a high regard for students and respects our points of view. He knows his stuff. And I personally found him to be an encouragement and supportive.
Jesse Seary is a great prof and a great person. He's strict and can be a bit pompous but underneath that is a very wise man who will cut you a break if he sees you trying like he did with me. I missed almost all his morning classes last term and I came to him at the end asking if there was any hope for me to pass and he gave it to me. Great prof!
Jesse was great. Super passionate and charismatic which are great qualities in a lecturer. I am now in grad school and Jesse and his Social Theory course still stand out as being major turning points in regards to shaping my subsequent academic choices.
Worst prof I ever, ever had, and I have a PhD. He thinks he's a genius, and well he may be, but no one will ever know for sure because his massive ego renders him completely useless. Much of the time he is too busy showing off his tattoos to be aware that 93% of his class has fallen asleep due to his boring, incomprehensible rants. he may have b
he is a very fair person.. 1st test is all mc. second test is short answer based on concepts. final is short answer too.. if you're having trouble go and talk to him.. GO TO CLASS itll add up for participation!
If you are passionate about sociology, you will love him lots!@! But if you want an easy teacher, try to avoid him. Very hard teacher, way over beginners sociology.
He's a good and interesting teacher if he shows up to class...except to not have class at least once every two weeks. it's cool at first but 8 missed classes later gets a bit annoying.
he is great teacher, but he frightens me a little with his look... he kinda looks like Creed from The Office
If you want to do well you need to attend classes. Its a must. His tests have serious time pressure, so if you don't know your material your going to struggle to finish. He is insightful and challenges your mental capacity. An inspiring prof and a great choice for those serious students.
Great Prof!!Attend his classes and make notes of what he saids because he doesnt give out clear notes, just headings of what his lectures. Exams are easy to study for, its just what he talks about, understand and memorize it and you'll be fine for the exam.
Don't panic. Somehow this class always seemed way more confusing that it was. Seary is very philosophical, but extremely useful for a sociology major. This class is not hard, especially in comparison to university, but it has also stuck out as one of my most interesting classes to date. Enjoy it, because you should probably only take it once ;)
He's a good guy. He cares for his students and if you try hard enough he'll notice. I just find it too hard to keep up w/ his Sociological Jargon. I also find note taking to be a major issue. Attendance to every class is compulsory!!!
I really like Dr. Seary. You'll probably like the class if you like discussing sociological theory. One of my favorite things about this class is there was no term paper. There are two mid-terms but I would much rather do tests than papers.
he repeats things over and over and nothing he says makes sense. he gets you to do these important readings that are impossible to understand. The whole time I'm like huh??!!
Good teacher. Put in the effort and do lots of work at home and you should do well. Recognizes hard work. I found taking notes to be very hard in this course, he also asks you to finish the notes yourself (fill in the blanks). I didn't understand much of his lectures due to his incessant use of unexplained sociological terms.
His lectures were nearly incomprehensible for the average student...was fine if you've taken a lot of sociology prior. The texts he chose were fantastic with real life examples. The best part was that he marked on effort put forth. Use the terms from the book for exams and you'll do fine!
He constantly cancels and now shows to his classes. Exams are based on his lectures, that are difficult and tedious to understand. Uses a lot of sociological terms without explaining what they are or what they mean. Mutters a lot, difficult to hear him and understand his slight accent
Jesse is a great teacher. He did cancel a lot of his classes this year, but his reasoning for that is understandable. If you go to all his classes, take notes, and do the readings, it's a piece of cake. Jesse is a wonderful man, and was always really encouraging.
Dr. Seary is a very good man. He may seem a bit intimidating but if you go to class and show him that you are interested and that you are listening then he will appreciate you for it. His exams are VERY fair. He is very approachable :)
Interesting guy. Write the notes and try your hardest to listen. He's fair and you'll do fine as long as you go to class
A pretty good teacher. Lectures can be a little tedious but most of the time he is interesting. His marking is surprisingly strict for his laid back attitude, but it's not hard to pass. You don't HAVE TO attend, but if you don't make sure to get notes!
hes boring and always cancels class. if u want to do well, just go to class and TRY to pay attention. his exams are pretty straight forward and straight from his class notes. he's old now, but u could tell he was very good looking when he was younger
Awesome prof! very fair. highly educated! and so goodlooking!! he doesnt smile much... but wen he does.. OH MY GOD! for the rest of you that dont think hes hard or boring or whatever... its probably because you just dont get sociology and thats your fault. You have to work hard in his class and in the end it will pay off!
i really dont know what to say other than that hes an amazing person and prof... and hes gorgeous... hes like an older version of Christian Bale! and hes very educated! hes just awesome! i really cant say enough about this guy... great person!
i really dont know what to say other than that hes an amazing person and prof... and hes gorgeous... hes like an older version of Christian Bale! and hes very educated! hes just awesome! i really cant say enough about this guy... great person!
80% of exams are based on his lectures. What's the point in buying a $120 textbook and a $50 book of readings then? His notes are nearly incomprehensible because he only puts the headings of the topics he is discussing. His voice is monotone and he tends to mumble a lot when he lectures. It makes it very difficult to concentrate especially at 8:30a
Jesse is a great teacher. His exams may be difficult, but they are very fair. His main focus is on teaching his students the concepts, not memorization. Know your concepts, attend EVERY class- & you'll do extremely well. He marks very fairly.
Dr. Seary is a really helpful prof. Make sure to attend ALL THE CLASSES as most of his exam questions are based from the notes. The video's he shows are actually interesting. Oh, and did I mention hes a BABE.
I took 1121 with Dr.Eisler and much preferred her teaching methods. He speaks in the most monotone voice and makes sociology seem so mundane, which is rather unfortunate since I was thinking of majoring in sociology. Hard marker.
Speaks in a monotone voice, only teaches from his notes, very boring class. Don't even bother buying his books other than the one for the online assignment. His office hours are stupid (2 hours a week). His grades consisted only of 3 midterms and the online assignments + attendance (which account for 15% of the grade). Glad class is done with.
Jesse Seary's teaching methods are different , he teaches from his own knowledge rather than the book , his 2 tests, may be challenging but if you put in the effort it should be fine , NEVER miss a class, notes are helpful for the exams , overall not a bad professor.
Dr. Seary knows what he's talking about. Some might complain that he speaks in a monotone voice, but his speciality is not in a dramatic performance, but rather the content. He relates the topics to heart wrenching stories from his own life, and puts something personal into every lecture. The exams are tough but fair, and he hints what's on them.
With his depth of knowledge, life experience, and enthusiasm for sociological theory, Seary has inspired me to dig deeper - I only hope more professors are like him. Folks who rate negatively are simply clueless and looking for a free ride. If you want a genuine education show up, do the work, and you will benefit. Big time. Highly Recommended!!
He is a decent teacher. Seems sarcastic and does not like it when any sociology methods are challenged. Seems a little snobby. Sometimes I disagree with some of the things he says but that is life I suppose. He can be sarcastic and unprofessional but if you accept what he is saying as the end all be all then you should do fine in his course.
Seary is a beast. The man wrote a 348 page Ph.D paper - he knows his stuff. Challenging, helpful, and forgiving, he's someone that wants you to learn. Do the readings (yes, all of them), participate, and you wont just get a good grade, but you'll learn something too. He's too hard if you're lazy like I am. Much respect.
He know's his stuff however he comes off angry all the time and I didnt really like that, I want the professor to be friendly and seem like he likes us (pretend at least) serious, yes sarcastic at times. My class made a facebook group and tested each other before midterms ect. and it helped a ton!! I defiantly recommend it. Good Luck
Seary is a very intelligent man. Should he be teaching...no. His lectures are unclear and they do not follow any structure. I have never been in a class and felt like I have learnt nothing. Not to mention his expectations for tests are ridiculous.
Almost never responds to e-mails form students. Not friendly teacher at all. Final exam questions were very hard to understand. Didn't give enough time for written mid-term at all.
His teaching method has left me to learn NOTHING. His notes are words on a paper that lead you to just read the textbook to understand what he is talking about and he doesn't give proper notice of assignments. He speaks in a mumble and covers his mouth while speaking. One of the worst teachers I have ever had.
he is the most useless teacher i've ever met. when he actually bothered to show up to class (which was rare), his lectures were so unclear and difficult to follow, it was absolutely pointless. i was so lost the entire semester. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
I took Jesse's class many years ago - and went on to get an hons BA at U of T, an MSc sociology at the London School of Economics & a PhD there too. I was thinking about anthropology vaguely until I walked into Jesse's lectures & was compelled by the critical space he opened up. A life changing teacher - I suggest paying attention. Thanks jesse.
I took several of Dr. Sears's classes eons ago. I have to tell you, that this man has made a lasting impression on me and he affected the way I interpret the world. He is challenging, insiteful, intelligent and selects a reading list that will broaden your mind. I still have my copy of "Social Things" (Lemert), tattered, marked up and dog eared.
Jesse Seary has got to be one the best professors I have ever had. Yes his lectures are intense and sometimes confusing. That's the point. As he bluntly told me "It's my job to present the material and it's your job to learn it". He also recommended buying a dictionary. He's the best because he expects you to be accountable for your education.
