Awesome teacher...thought-provoking...makes sure everyone is aware of current events...analyzes texts in really interesting ways
All around ok prof. A little egotistical and often quick to disregard the ideas not on his line of thinking.
Pretty awesome prof. Finds cool ways of reading texts and throws in lots of interesting trivia. Fairly hard marker but gives lots of constructive criticism.
very interesting prof. Provokes mind-expanding discussions and encourages critical views on otherwise bland stories.
Terrible prof...and very hard marker.....he recommeded the writing center to take reports in to get grammatical erros fixed but every error they changed he marked it wrong.. told him about it and he didn't do nething. he's a terrible teacher and no thesis are ever good for him.
Great guy. Really smart, not afraid to tell it like it is. Should be teaching a higher level class though, his talents are somewhat wasted on intro english classes--hence some student frustration.
If you are serious about improving your writing then he is a great prof. He can be frustrating if your just there to take your mandatory english class because he marks relatively hard. However, it is possible he would be more suited to teaching a more advanced english class.
Amazing class, amazing professor. He's certainly not the easiest marker I've ever had though. His essays will push you to re-evaluate everything you know and everything you want to defend.
Jesse is an excellent english teacher. He is very easy to understand. Even though he tends to mark a little harder, his class is great for anyone interested in english. Great sense of humour too.
He made class really enjoyable, always had good feedback, and definitely willing to help.
Extremely intelligent, if you aren't smart and don't read alot of books...good luck.
tough marker! but if you actualy want to learn smth. go for this class. you have to approach as often as you can with your thesis statments and you'll be fine.
Jesse Stothers is very helpfull. My writing improved a lot.
Prof. Stothers way by far the best professor I've ever had. He is extremely intelligent and knows his stuff. He's also funny, and makes the class interesting. I've never been excited to attend an 8:30 class before! His marking is hard, but makes you work to improve. And I'm thankful for that.
Very good prof. Lectures are very interesting and thought provoking. Highly recommended for people who are serious about improving their writing!
Incredibly smart guy. He provokes levels of thinking that I was incapable of reaching before being in his class. Also, he has a great sense of humor that can make the class interesting for anyone. Be sure to discuss your essays with him before handing them in as he is willing to help and guide you towards doing your best.
He was one of my first teachers, and remains one of my favourites. Really engaging speaking style, hilarious, and a great way of explaining things to students - especially for the english Intro class. I'd not only take another class from him, I'd buy him a beer.
Re-discovered what I enjoy about English in this class. He has a sense of humour & is quite thought-provoking. A good mixture of lecture-style information as well as seminar-like discussion; he has a solid knowledge of sources & world experience outside the text that make what you're learning relevant instead of merely theoretical. One of the best.
He was a very good professor to listen to. I enjoyed going to class because he was interesting. I am the best at writing a good thesis in my essays but I still passed his class.
Great prof: expanded my mind, made me laugh every class, and made me happy to be in university. I felt sad if I missed his class. Goes beyond a basic english class with the insights and will help you become a confident writer.
He is an awesome person and he makes the class fun and endurable I never miss his class and he is so HOT!!! OMG im starting to sound like an obsessed woman
He is a fantastic prof and is quickly becoming my favourite class of university. He knows the subject inside out and has really opened my mind to countless possibilities within the literature. Classes are fun and interesting.I find myself hanging on his every word. Straightforward assignments & his marking is extremely fair. Perfect for my 1st year
I took a first year English class from him and it was the best class I have taken yet. I hope to get into another one soon. He is a great prof. Super funny and helpful! Your mark increases as he sees improvement!
Jesse Stothers is the most well-read, intelligent and interesting person I have met. His curriculum is good, but the way he presents it makes it outstanding. He completely altered the way that I see the world, and made me a much more critical reader and writer. He has plenty of his own stories to relate to that keep you on the edge of your seat.
Put simply, Jesse is THE absolute best teacher I've EVER had. His teaching-style combines humour and a confident, engaging delivery that evokes great discussion. Jesse has unprecedented insight, clarity, and desire to help you improve your writing abilities. Taking his class as my Commerce elective was honestly the best academic decision I've made!
he is extremely approachable whenever you need his help ,kinda hard marker but if he see your hard work your marks are going to be high but it is almostimpossible to get 90(everyone knows how hard it is to write English essay at university level) but the novels he gave us to read are so much interesting and he has a very very deep knowledge of them
Jesse Stothers is everything you look for in a GOOD prof: Interesting, clear, thought- provoking, considerate, and tough but fair. I took Literature and Composition first with him then signed up for his 200-level Lit Uses of Myth. AMAZING. Very interesting, and we had inspiring discussions during class. He makes you want to do your best!
Amazing beyond belief. If all profs were Jesse the world would be fifty million times better.
Jesse is without a doubt the best prof I have ever had. He is so so so intelligent and well read, but not in a pompous way. Starts and encourages really interesting class discussions. He is actually the nicest guy too, super helpful, approachable and knowledgable. If you take an english class, make sure you take it with Jesse!
He is an amazing Professor. I took Eng 110 with him and his lectures were very thought provoking. His lectures made me look at the work in a whole new way. He encouraged us to talk to him about our essays and once I did I started to notice immediate boost in my grade. He really helpful at pointing out mistakes and how you can fix it. Hes amazing!
As a science major, I can say with confidence that Jesse is the best professor I have had. He is extremely passionate and his lectures are very thought provoking. Always connects with students and is open to many interpretations of the literature.
Jesse is the most intelligent person and he is not at all pompous. Every class he says how he did not think of that and is open to new ideas. The class is always interesting, Jesse can make boring texts seem interesting and exciting because he is so passionate about his work. You learn so much from English, religion, history and psychology.
Jesse is the most intelligent interesting, and funniest prof in the world. If you read this Jesse, I would like to thank you for being such a great teacher. I would have never got such good marks without you. Thank you for introducing me to my favorite book catch-22. Thank you for making a difference in my life and so many others.
Jesse Stothers is the best professor I have ever had and one of the smartest men I have ever encountered. He encourages and supports everyone and has a good sense of humour as well. Only problem is now I will be disappointed with every subsequent prof I have...
Stothers is the best prof I have had. He is encouraging, helpful, and entertaining. Very intelligent and honest-definitely a no bull-sh*t kind of person. If you put the work in and follow his direction, you'll get a good mark in this class.
While I already enjoyed literature beforehand he managed to make reading poems and short stories a million times more interesting and entertaining than I ever could have imagined with his great sense of humour. Jesse is intelligent, fair, and truly cares about his students. If you need an english credit you won't be disappointed in taking his class
This was a really challenging class in that it requires a ton of background information in addition to the texts and it was unlike any English class I have ever taken. That being said, Jesse was extremely approachable and really helpful when it came to improving my work. He was extremely knowledgable and interesting to listen to !
Offers a large wealth of knowledge which makes his lectures endlessly interesting. This is by for the most informative class I have ever taken. He is a tough marker but fair. The feedback on his essays are very useful and help you understand why you got your mark as opposed to some profs whose marking seems arbitrary.
He has a lot of knowledge on subjects, he make the class fairly interesting. He has kind of a cynical opinion on everything. If you aren't a strong writer you will find that his marking is super hard and to make a good thesis statement is hard and you don't really understand what he wants or considers "good"
Jesse was an excellent prof with good knowledge on the topic. His marking was tough but his feedback on the essays helped improve my writing more than any other English prof I have had (6 others). A lot of background information needed for this course but if you want to be a better writer, it is worth it.
Don't take this class for an easy credit, take it and improve your writting. It was tough and he marks hard but his comments are helpful and he takes improvement into account. It was a good class.
Very smart guy; learned a lot about both English + life in general. Really great choice of texts, but lectures were jam-packed + it felt like we were racing through material. Seemed like he was unhappy with being there and as though our class was a nuisance. Fair marker, but wouldn't take another class with him and wouldn't recommend to others.
The best teacher I have ever had, I look forward to his class because it's so good. I laugh every class and the lectures are so interesting. Everyone should take English with Jesse because he pushes you to do the very best you can and he makes you want to do better. It's just a bonus the prof is a super attractive.
Amazing professor. His lectures were always interesting and very informative. Learned a lot about literature in his class, and professor Stothers always made the material come alive through his excitement for the work. Class discussion was encouraged and always useful.
Super tough marker, be ready to put a lot of time into your essays. You only have 3 of them and they were pretty short, so that was nice, and the reading was fairly easy. A background in mythology would be SUPER helpful!!
Super tough marker
Super tough marker but the lectures are worth taking the class. He really knows his stuff and captured my attention for the entire class every week.
Lectures were interesting and useful to the papers we had to write. For the final he gave us a list of thesis's we could pick from to plan our essay for it, which really helped!
Dr. Stothers truly knows what he is doing. He expects work but those who do the work are rewarded as such. He motivated me to do the best that I can in that class. You don't have to do the readings etc. before class but it is definitely in your best interest to do so.
Jesse was an incredible teacher. I'm a science major and I took ENG 113 in the summer because I've been dreading the subjectivity inherent in the field after a bad experience with an english course in first year, but he made the class and the texts interesting and applicable. Really interesting guy to talk to, too.
Jesse is an amazing professor. He is truly knowledgeable and educated with whatever materials he assigns you in his classes. His lectures are interesting, sometimes heavy, but always funny. You leave his class feeling inspired, as though you've expanded your mind, and as though you're gaining something just by being around him. 10/10.
Very good prof makes otherwise dry lectures fun.
Economics, Economics, Economics, I took a 100 level English class and ended up getting the best economic lesson I've ever had. Get ready for feed back! write a 250 word assignment expect 300 words back.
Dr. Stothers clearly knows his subject area very well and has many interesting things to say. That said, he is a very tough grader and his feedback can even seem really mean sometimes. Perhaps this is because I took the class online, but overall the experience was a negative one for me.
Jesse is a super hard marker. He told us at the start of the year he is open to your ideas on literary texts you chose. HE IS NOT!!!! If you don't write exactly what he thinks it means, or go into a different direction he nails you with rude comments! most feedback I got this year was that I need to be more literate. total confidence ripper.
My confidence was ruined, I did not want to hand in my essays anymore. That's just my opinion, but he definitely affected my motivation.
Jesse is an excellent professor of literature: he elucidates the meaning and pertinence of poems, novels, and art in a manner that dissolves the specialized mentality; and, he inspires good work and deeper thinking through both his own impressive effort and his unequivocal criticism. Overall, the course was manageable and beneficial.
Along with all students, I've had my fair share of poor, opinionated profs. Jesse takes the cake. It's not just being opinionated, it's being a really rude person believing his analysis is superior to every other analyst. I have never felt so attacked on my hobbies, thoughts, ability, and religion through his lectures. Avg prof, not good guy (IMO).
Jesse Stothers is indeed a hard marker but some of these reviews are very wrong, He does not care if you have a completely different idea on a poem or novel etc than him. Just be sure to back it up with facts taken from the text. He doesn't give a lot of homework, but you will have to write a lot of essays. I found his class enlightening.
Really hard marker and when doing it online expect a lot of reading. His feedback is far from constructive and is borderline rude.
Very well thought out lectures, though he expects you to know the background of all religions, languages, etc.. Not a horrible prof, but definitely overly opinionated.
He seems pretty decent in a lecture, but when he is grading he's very rude. I don't mind getting marked hard if I am getting constructive criticism, but his was not helpful in any way.
Feedback on essays is very rude, I will take constructive criticism, but this was not helpful at all. No matter how hard you work you'll get around the same average mark on each essay. I DO NOT recommend taking this class
Took ENG226 after taking ENG277 from him last year. Going to be honest, I didn't read a single book that was assigned in either class, only a few short stories. His course material combined with a little research will tell you everything you need to know for essays. His feedback is harsh I still received good grades for my work. Can't complain.
The absolute horror! he was not very monotone, and very hard marker. He did not care about his students. All in all, I have never met someone so egotistical than him. This prof was the sole reason I started hating English, again
I thought he was a very insightful and passionate prof. He is not egotistical as some suggest and I didn't think his feedback was rude. He is clear about what he expects and is helpful. He knows a lot more than just English and incorporates that into his class which makes it interesting. He can get going on tangents but there is usually a point
Jesse had a lot of knowledge about this course, now it was an online course so it could be different from an in-class course. He was really helpful when emailing him and he gives plenty of feedback for assignments, he does rip your essays and assignments apart but you always end up with a good grade. He does require heavy reading sometimes to much
He was actually on of my favourite professors. In lectures he focuses on background/history and the context of the liturature. Focus on that for your essays, plus you can just read the stories you plan to write about. The class is all essays and they will be marked critically, the class did improve my personal writing skills which I enjoyed.
Hard to understand and follow during lectures.
Very hard marker. Tears your essay's apart, and only values his opinion when it comes to writing essay's. He is a very smart professor, but is a fairly rude person. He'll defiantly help you learn, but be ready for hard marked essays.
Jesse is a great teacher. He takes his work very seriously, so his grading seems tough but is ultimately fair. He is very particular as to what he expects from you on the papers, and he makes it very clear. You'll be fine if you do exactly s he tells and you put in the work. His classes were also very enlightening, as he is very intelligent.
Great English prof, very knowledgeable about the subject and doubly passionate. Essays can trip you up, be sure to pay attention to every bit of info on his marking structure for essays. There's only two, so it's best to do best on both.
I love him. He does a great job of teaching poetry.
I strongly recommend going to at least a few lectures because it will greatly help you with the essay assignments. There were 2 essays and the final. He gives excellent feedback. There was no textbooks as he posted all the reading on PAWS. For the final, if you study about three poems in depth you should pass, but study about 5 to do really well.
Jesse gives lots of feedback but marks fairly easy, so there's lots of room to improve but you aren't discouraged by a low grade. He has interesting ideas on poetry and inspires critical thinking. As long as you explain your ideas fully (ALWAYS EXPLAIN WHY) he is supportive. Essays can be on anything as long as it's cleared by him. Would take again
I think he was a good professor overall, HOWEVER, he tended to be very very rude and harsh with his feedback. Of course criticism and feedback are important, but I don't think being so mean about it was necessary at all. He once accused me of not reading the book on an essay I had written when I did. I would not take one one of his classes again.
Professor Stothers is extremely rude when giving feedback although he seems like a laid back and good prof in class, his feedback can be enough override his in class persona. Only half way through the term and dont know if there will be much going up from here
He should not be teaching. Mean in feedback. He wants papers written like business reports, not English essays. He told students we have been taught incorrectly in a subject he has no expertise in. He never looked at the work submitted to him and slapped the same grade on everything handed in. Plus he told us our class wasn't a priority. Just don't
This man is a genius, he can spend the whole lecture analyzing one sentence from a single text. Showing up to class is a must and you must pay attention in class if you want a good grade. His feedback can come off as mean sometimes but it is constructive as it helped me with my writing skills. Would totally take his class again.
Dr. Stothers is one of the toughest graders I've had for a 200-level English class. The reading list was ridiculously long and unachievable especially if you're taking a full course load. Also does not give good feedback on essays. He basically ripped mine apart without telling me how to fix it. A fairly nice guy, but not a great prof.
I do agree that he is a tough grader, but every critique I received was justified. I felt like I became a better writer after completing his course. He does not mince words. I can see how students may take his comments personally though. The course was laid out very well. I felt like I had no question what was due and when.
I enjoyed listening to his lectures but this was too much for a first year class. I never want to read poetry again. Made what could have been a really fun and enjoyable class something I would dread. Very non accessible for in person. No recordings or lecture notes, if you aren't physically there and mentally there good luck trying to catch up.
INSANE reading list and awful feedback. He is clearly intelligent and passionate about what he teaches, but he does not provide helpful feedback. It is always negative and rude. Also the reading list was wild. Super heavy. Interesting material, but I didn't think it was worth taking.
Was a good guy and funny. Provides feedback but doesnt explain how you can be better or go over common errors in class. Wasnt bad, wasnt great.
Was really looking forward to this class but it was honestly a terrible experience. The reading list was torturously long and his feedback was hardly constructive, just kind of rude. He seems like a nice guy in person and passionate about what he teaches, but his grading and feedback along with the reading list made the course unbearable.
He gives a lot of feedback some of which is very useful and some of which is confusing and (tbh) a little rude. The reading list was a lot but it was do-able if not manageable. He clearly cares a lot. I both liked and disliked him, and sometimes it feels like the course needs an update.
He has a very specific way that he wants you to write, which is different from what most of us have been taught in the past. This would be fine if he actually gave you examples and better feedback but instead he just writes "why" after every sentence you write. Reading list was extremely long and even more reading in class materials.
Awesome prof. He's challenging but not overbearing. Has fairly deep insights into the course material. If you're at all competent at writing you should be able to get a decent mark pretty easily, he's heavy on the corrections but generous with marks.
Garbage, waste of time. The lectures were pointless, he said nothing of substance. He also expects students to forget how they've been taught to write essays and write them how he wants, but doesn't TELL you how he wants them. For an intro class, it was a waste of time and just made me feel stupid. I won't be taking his class ever again.
Professor Stothers speaks so fast during lectures it’s hard to take notes. He’s a tough grader on papers and after trying to apply what I thought he wanted to my second paper, I get pretty much the same feedback and only a slightly higher grade. It was very very difficult to understand exactly what he is looking for
Waste of time and money. The lectures are pointless, nothing to learn from. For a 1st year English class he expects us to write 4th year essays. Comments on essays were extremely rude and didn't give anything to fix the mistakes on your paper. He made me feel so stupid. Save your time and confidence and don't take this class
I completely agree with all the reviews here. This guy TEARS everyone apart and their work. He is so rude and offensive. I hope all of these negative reviews gets taken higher to the university because this guy seriously does not deserve a job. He has no common sense/pratical knowledge and has zero real world life experience. He needs to be fired!!
Dr. Stothers is a hard but fair grader. His copious feedback is not rude. Prepare to throw away the writing and formatting skills you learned in highschool. Avoid this class if you lack strong understandings of history and religion. I think the negative reviews are from people who are salty because he actually points out what they are doing wrong.
Decent prof who wants to see his students improve. His marking is harsh but it is helpful for the future assignments. Not a whole lot of assignments, so you have to do well on the one's he has.
His final exam made my hand cramp up from all the insane amount of writing. It was HELL
Jesse is a great prof. I normally hate English but his insight made the material genuinely interesting. He is direct and does not sugarcoat things, which is why some people may think he is harsh. His feedback is very helpful if you are willing to accept it and use it to improve your writing.
He was not that great. Would say some very questionable things during lectures. Would only write why after ever sentence in an essay and would not provide how to fix the error.
Jesse is clearly very competent in English, and expects a lot from his students. As such, he is a tough but fair grader. Papers are very important to him and this class. His in class lectures are good when he is actually focusing on the material, but he often gets sidetracked and goes into drunk uncle rants about feminism and wokeness
changed my view of poetry and literature forever. love this guy
DO NOT take a class with Jesse Stothers. When marking assignments, he doesn't give you constructive feedback on how to improve your writing, he merely writes "why" after every sentence and completely tears apart your paper. His comments are rude and if you ask him for help he speaks to you in an insulting and degrading way.
Expects you to write at a higher level despite this being a first year class. No explanation on how he wants you to write uni english papers and he does not give constructive criticism when grading.
His feedback at times were rude and wouldn't explain much on his marking.
I once read a review on here about Stothers that said you need thick skin. I'm a server, so I have very thick skin but this man is downright rude. He'll tear your paper apart with no explanation. He makes you feel small and is very condescending. If you know how, use his feedback to do better but prepare to figure it out on your own.
Damn, who hurt you Dr. Stothers? Who hurt you? Your grades and the absolute hilarity of how torn apart you get on the essay feedback are two entirely different things. I got a 75% on a midterm essay and was critiqued like a terrible wine by a master sommelier. Yeah, I'm more of a science and math guy I guess?? He'd probably tear this review apart.
It grades papers with a patronizing, condescending look at you. Without giving you any respect, it will mercilessly criticize your views with its narrow and pitiful subjective mind. As a normal human being, you can't even figure out what this crazy person's comments are trying to say.
Jesse grades harshly and rudely and provides nonsensical feedback. He leaves comments on one essay suggesting one thing, then dot marks on the following essay for following his suggestion.
This man is rude. His criticism is harsh. He belittles students and does not explain why and how he marks. He sets high expectations in what students should get down in a week; mate I'm sorry I do not have time to read 10 required texts, go over your long lectures, and do work for other classes. Spare yourself and take a different class.
This professor does wayyyy too much for a first-year English course. You will spend days working on an essay just for him to bully you and say it is "feedback." He barely provides notes and expects you to be a god when it comes to writing. All the ratings on this prof are accurate.
I highly recommend taking courses with Dr.Jesse
The course content was by no means difficult, but Dr. Stothers is in fact a very tough grader. No one in the course earned any writing assignment grades above 90, and the highest final marks were in the area of 85-87. If you plan on taking a course with this prof, expect to get grades in the mid 70s and low 80s even if you put in a lot of effort.
Professor Jesse Stothers is the reason I changed my major from English. The sheer thought of ever having to take a class with a prof like him again has torn me away from my love of writing and English, which before this class I loved. His grading style is sloppy, his comments are unprofessional and useless to develop any skill, I regret not dropping
Worst professor I've ever had. His grading is a mess; his comments/feedback are unprofessional and downright rude. He seems like a very unhappy and pessimistic person; if I didn't need the credit I would have dropped the class. Too much reading. A different prof designed the class, and he doesn't seem to understand their assignment instructions.
Course was not particularly difficult, but Stothers is not a good professor. Made things tediously annoying. His grading is very unforgiving, feedback is not helpful at all. Goes against rubric often. Does nothing to help you learn or improve, writing center is better for that. Only good part was the interesting/enjoyable readings that he assigned.
This professor is unprofessional and incredibly rude when he grades. One example of his “feedback” is him writing “[seriously?]” with no explanation on how to improve. So demoralizing.
ENG 114 for summer was all about science fiction readings. It was an interesting class. I also liked the feedback on my essays, they helped me get better at writing essays!
Manageable amount of work and readings were interesting but lots of essays and they are graded very harshly.
He expects students to be born with PHDs and to know everything about writing. Is rude and grades like the world is about to end. Everything you learnt about essays in highschool, is apparently wrong according to him. Do not take his class.
