Well she wasn't terrible, but she does go on and on about topics. She also doesn't post notes online, doesn't go from the book, and doesn't give study guides for the tests. You MUST go to ever class to get a good grade on the tests.
she definitly requires you to think. but she is also very dedicated to teaching and her students. she tries to make the topics connect to real life. its not an easy grade but coming from somone that HATES theory.... she did a good job to make me enjoy it
She is terrible! I've never had a more unclear professor. She doesn't seem to care if her students do well, she's confusing and gives no opportunity to get a good grade if you don't test well. Her class is boring, her notes are vague and her tests have nothing to do with the lecutre.
She is one of my favorite teachers. You definitely have to go to class because everything is based off lecture, but I thought it was very interesting so I didn't mind. She always relates stuff to real life and lets everyone get involved in discussion. I've taken her for 306 and 309 and got an A in both. If you go to class, you will get a good grade
Best teacher i have had in a long time.. she is actually there to help you .. not there to trick you.. I would recommend her to ANYONE!!
3 tests 1 paper. Tests are mostly application, not memorization. If you go to her office to talk about the tests/paper, you will do A LOT better on them. Boring but straightforward. Jess is a little quirky but nice.
Jess is a great teacher but her class is definitely not for slackers. You do have to do the readings to do well on the test and a lot of the material for the test does come from her lectures so attendance not mandatory unless you want a good grade in the class. She is fun and interactive. Just study for the exams hard and you'll love it.
She is not easy. If you want a class to slack in this is not it. You better find another prof. But she knows what she is talking about so if you want a knowledgeable prof who can teach you everything you want to know she's it. But if you slack and start ditching class you will not do well. You need to show her you really know your stuff or else BAD
She's a pretty good teacher & pretty nice too. 1 paper, 3 tests, & 4 discussion questions. Paper wasn't as easy as it seemed, tests were worded a little weird but overall a good class.
I dont understand what all these people are talking about! I found her class to be one of the easiest classes so far in this major. I learned a lot in her lectures, never did the readings, and got a B+ on everything. I loved her, she was quirky and adorable
She is funny and nice at first but she expects way too much and she doesn't give study guides like normal professors because she wants her students to fail? She needs to realize that she is the hardest 309 teacher and she should re-plan her teaching style.
I don't think she is that bad...she actually does make me stay awake in class.she likes to get the class involved, which makes it interesting.the only problem i had was that her tests were confusing.she called them application questions.i didn't care for her tests and Her GA graded harshely. No one i knew got an A on the paper. UNCLEAR on assignmen
The class lectures were very enjoyable. I always walked away feeling like I actually learned something. The test wording can be tricky, but just take the time to read and re-read to make sure you understand what is being asked. The GA took off points on the paper for things that had not been specified beforehand and seemed to be overly picky.
Attendance is not mandatory; however, attending the lectures is helpful. She likes to get the class involved in discussions, and all of the topics are related to real life experiences and observations. The class wasn't too difficult, but it wasn't a walk in the park. Keep up with the readings because they will appear on the test.
honestly, one of the best professors i have had. Not easy but not terribly difficult. She is challenging however, and requires you to think and apply concepts. Don't take her if you are a slacker and want an easy class but if you want to learn, then id suggest taking her
Great teacher, really knows her stuff. She's always available during office hours. She's not easy and she makes you work, but it's totally worth it. Great class! And I don't get why people are so upset that there's no study guide for tests--get over it--you're in college now.
She's a great prof, engaging & helpful. Her tests are basic mult choice, not hard at all unless you didn't study concepts. Class average for the first test was a 73%, NOT 60%. The essay was graded hard, esp. by the TA. Class isn't an easy A but it's not impossible to receive one. She just doesn't hand out A's like some other profs - you gotta work!
A really fun class! She explains concepts clearly and tells you EXACTLY what to study for. The essay was stupid and difficult in my opinion (like the other person said, the TA grades HARD!), but the tests are okay if you read VERY carefully (and study a lot)! 3 tests, 1 essay, and the choice of either another essay or a group project.
A hardworking professor. Her class is hard to me. I got a decent average grade just barely. A bit into herself. She could have been more clear on certain hw. Hard grading, i had to work my butt off, in order to get my high decent grade. Take her with precaution and a willingness to work hard. Show up to class.
omg this class is hard! boo! she is super cool as a professor but when you talk to her one on one she talks to you like you're stupid for not getting it!
fun class but hard tests
I loved this class! The professor totally applied the concepts to real life, which made it that much more interesting to me. It's not an easy A, and you have to study, but let's get real, it is college and not high school. She was always available for office hours, and it really helped to talk to her outside of class.
Lots of work, but really worth it. I loved this class! Dr. Abrams was awesome!
Awesome teacher, lots of hard work. You'll definitely learn from her. Helpful. If your looking for an easy A though, not the prof to take...definitely need to try in her class.
Love this teacher. Gotta go to class for notes but material is interesting.I found everything easy in this class and she does a good job at relating material to students. 3 tests 1 paper 1 group project 5 in class q's that u get the points if ur there and answer the question.
She is so passionate about the subject she came off angry @ times but she is a nice person, very clear & thurough of what she expects from you. She is very caring & helpful and has really interesting views! Had fun in class! I thought the tests were on the tougher side but it was a good experience!
Abrams was the most influential professorS I have had at CSULB. She is very clear about what she expects from you and she is very accessible. Take her. Though going to class is not mandatory for points, its highly recommended. If you go to class then the reading for class is easy and you can get through it faster. In 306, there is lots of informati
The only C I got on my transcript. She is funny and passionate but the material is kinda no duh... and the group presentations are so ill informed because no one does the readings that it muddies the actual class material. Ok class... wished there was more thinking, less... listening and taking thin substanceless notes.
She is humorous which makes the class tolerable. She knows her stuff so if you have questions, she'll have the answers. I would recommend starting on the paper early on in the semester or else you'll get stressed out. Don't just write down what's on the powerpoint, write down what she is saying as well and you're good to go.
Greatest professor I had this semester! The class was sooo much fun. She always related her lectures to real life examples and we always ended up talking about her or one of us (she referred to it as "therapy sessions"). The class was difficult but I came out with an A! So glad I took her class!
Wonderful and smart professor. Do the readings, go to class, pay attention to lectures. You should get a B if you do that much. The course was difficult, required a lot of critical thinking and definitely is not an an easy A. If you're interested in the material though, It will be an enjoyable course. I am very glad I took the class with Jess.
Amazing teacher. Take her for ANY class. She explains things clearly and the class is always interesting. Best teacher so far.
Jess is a great teacher! If you go to class, take notes, and read the articles there is no way you can't do well in the class. There is one group presentation at the end, which you have almost the entire semester to work on, so its not that bad. Tests are short answer, but easy if you study. Very fair teacher!! Loved this class & learned a lot!
Very engaging and animated professor. She's such a fun character. Her classes are not so boring. It's really easy to understand. Her weak point is time management, but I think it's not so bad. She organizes her lectures well. She does grade harder than she lets on, so don't take her too lightly in a paper. At the same time, it's bearable.
I love Jess! :D I've taken 306, 307, and 309 with her and she's an amazing professor. Her tests are always structured similarly; it's all real life application. She wants you to understand the concepts, not memorize it verbatim. Great attitude and makes her classes enjoyable. I definitely recommend her!!
A great teacher. Very clear concerning assignments and lectures. If you happen to not understand something, she will gladly stop her lecture to cater to your misunderstanding.
She's annoying to me, think she knows it all. I wish I had of taken this class with someone else.....
Really great professor, knows what she's talking about and pushes you to learn and grow. Take her for any class!
she is a VERY hard grader but she is so awesome and SO good at her job. she has very high expectations but you will learn so much from her class.
Take Jess if you get the chance! Shes an awesome teacher that really cares about her students. Shes really cool in office hours too. Go to class and pay attention to lecture and study your notes and you'll succeed. Its not hard if you put in a little effort
Terrible. Wish I had taken this class from another professor. Brought up LBGT issues almost every class=annoying. Lectures are dry and boring. I was very excited to take this class after hearing her reviews and because I like the course content but I was extremely let down by how it all panned out. AVOID JESS!! (I got a high B in this class.)
Jess is entertaining, educated, and engaging. Very discussion based and a lot of real-world examples and implications. Midterm, final, group presentation towards end of the semester, easy cultural write-up, and three extra credit opportunities that depend on attendance. Easy A class - and it's interesting!
First time teaching this course and it showed. She is interesting and I enjoyed her lectures. However, the group project she gave us was her demise. She does NOT tell you any details. She brags that she is vague. She gives you contradictory feedback and grades you on some unknown, illogical scale (bad = A's, good = B-'s) Won't take again
Jess is amazing! She makes you work, but I learned a lot. Her grading is fair and she is always available if you need help. some of the "bad" postings are clearly students who like to whine or didn't like their grade. Take Jess if you want to learn something.
AWESOME! Wants you to do well. Do not buy the book (depending on the class) just the reader. Fair teach overall. Open-minded, accepting and funny. STUDY and stay up to date on readings. She does NOt post her power-points online. Go to class. Be active. Have fun and most importantly talk to her if you don't get it. She is really understanding
This was her first time teaching this course. Her lectures were long, but very interesting. She likes to get the class engaged and she has an AWESOME sense of humor. Unfortunately, we had group projects that took up more than half of the semester, she is no longer doing that. Her test are a bit hard, I would have done better if I had studied more.
Dr Abrams is awesome. I'm in her Spring class right now. Only 3 exams and 3 in class discussions (that are impromtu, she forgets about them most of the time so if someone mentions it in class, she'll end up giving one that day lol super easy, 5pts each) plus a 50pt outgroup paper (easy) . She's so fun and keeps things interesting.
Exams are not too hard. My complaint is the group project, which was worth a big chunk of the overall grade. No proper rubric or guideline because it would "confine " us. Then she flipped a 180 and gave us a poor grade and was unable to explain how she graded us. Avoid this class if you want to actually learn something useful.
Dr. Abrams is an amazing professor. You will have to work for your grade in this class. Your grade in this class is based on one paper, three exams and three easy in class discussion topics. Does not take attedance but if you don't come to class on the day a discussion topic is assigned you lose out on those five points. Her test are fair.
I'm finishing my third year at CSULB and I've never had a professor present material as well as Jessica did. The way she taught made me love going to class. She also respects all of her students and their opinons. Her lectures were so good I almost cried one day. School officials please take note this is how professors should teach.
Professor Abrams is a fascinating lecturer and very insightful. Her class is entertaining and she loves hearing feedback from student. Would take again. Just be prepared to study for tests and you'll be good
My favorite communications professor. She is funny and presents material in a clear and interesting way. I loved going to her class because she genuinely cares for students and makes you want to participate. One short one page paper that was actually fun to do. Take her, you will not regret it
Jess cares about her students and is very clear on what is expected. She is always ready to help via email/office hours. She is hilarious and makes the material fun/interesting. CSULB has some great comm professors and Jess is one of them.
Dr. Abrams is nothing short of amazing. Her lectures are engaging and her openness to feedback is genuine. She is a scholar that enjoys her profession. 3 passable exams with reading study guide, 75% lecture, 25% text. One paper due towards the end you can turn in at any time. A must take professor at CSULB, not just for Comm majors.
This class is engaging and interesting! Jess's lectures are always super interesting and she makes the discussion fun. There are three multiple choice tests, come to class & write down everything she says. Get the book to do the readings, they help with the tests! One paper that she gives you three months to work on. A fun class that's worth taking
Jess is in my top 3 professors that changed my life as a college student! shes super helpful and conscious of everyones needs in the classroom space. she is extremely knowledgeable but also asks for help which is so refreshing to see from a professor. EVERYONE NEEDS TO TAKE THIS WOMANS CLASS.
Her instructions and criteria for assignments were very unclear. Her tests were easy but I would've liked to actually learn something. Her lectures were not diverse and you could easily tell they were aimed at accommodating a specific demographic. If you want to actually learn about interCULTURAL communication, take another class.
Jess is one of my favorite professors at CSULB. I will say she is a tough grader, but she is fantastic at teaching media effects. Every single class was interesting and it was very interactive. She truly cares about every single student and is a great person! Great class.
Jess is amazing! She knows her stuff, uses real-life examples during lectures to clarify meaning of concepts (makes class current, relevant, & fun), she puts up exam scores in under 24 hours, she truly listens, and she will know every student by name in a week! You will learn so much! 3 exams (with text reading guide), 1 paper (3 months to do it)
I'm happy I took this class higher level COMM class with Professor Jess because she's an amazing lecturer. Her enthusiasm and attitude made lecture go by so much quicker especially for it being my last class. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, I recommend you come to class in order to do good in exams. Exam questions are implied.
Jess is an incredible professor. Her lectures seriously inspire me and are very relatable. She makes you WANT to go to class! I have walked out learning so much about myself. One thing to say: her tests are very specific and grades tough on the paper. However, she's willing to help. Going to miss this bright soul!!
Abram's class is honestly easy. The class is graded out of 3 tests, 1 paper, and 2 random in class writing assignments with no right or wrong answer. Attendance is not mandatory, but all her tests are like 75% from the class lecture, and she does not post the powerpoints. BEWARE 1 bad exam grade, & the highest grade you can get in class is a B.
Dr. Abrams has three exams in this class and is very specific as to what she wants you to know regarding the exams. She requires you to read the text but will give you certain sections of the text to read for the exam, so she is very transparent! 75% of her exams are on her PPT lecture notes. She is very predictable.
There are very few things used to rack up points in this class so try your best on all assignments! There is a paper, 2 random writing assignments, and 3 exams. Make sure you do at least a B/A average on everything and you can pass with an A. Dr. Abrams makes it fun to come to class! Her examples for class material are so great! Really engaging.
Jess is great. Her lectures are very easy to understand. 3 exams where you have to read articles and apply lectures, different exam style but I love it! She is such a kind professor that really cares about her students. This course has helped me to understand media in a whole new light. Funnily enough she doesn't use social media. Take her yall!
Jess is awesome. I had her for 306 Spring 2020 and she did an amazing job at clarifying challenging concepts. She is very approachable and wants to help her students succeed in any way she can. Her tests are straightforward, and the paper isn't bad as she breaks it up into smaller assignments and gives great feedback.
Jess is an excellent professor! She's probably the most caring professor that I have ever had before. She is extremely funny and her lectures are really interesting, which will make you look forward to each class. Her tests seem intimidating at first but as long as you pay attention and do the assigned readings you'll be just fine!
The best professor at CSULB only thing is her way of study guides and testing were quite difficult. You weren't sure what to study or read besides the heading she'd give us. Other than that, she was an amazing professor. Made the lectures fun and engaging.
Did the wrong class below. Despite it being an online class due to covid. Professor Jess, was the best professor at CSULB only thing is her way of study guides and testing were quite difficult. You weren't sure what to study or read besides the heading she'd give us. Other than that, she was an amazing professor. Made the lectures fun and engaging.
Go to the lectures to learn, do the reading of the many articles to get the gist of them when the exams come, you'll need some knowledge of them to tie into the theory's, lectures. She is a caring, understandable energetic professor who doesn't give out HW or take attendance. 2 exams, one group project so not too much to worry about.
NICE PROFESSOR. Lecture notes are essential. 3 EXAMS based on lectures tied in with article readings (3-4 short answer & a few fill in the blank). 1 GROUP PROJECT, she assigns group members. Our class had a study group, would recommend to discuss articles & lecture notes. Grades VERY FAIRLY.
Her exams are a lot to get used to and are challenging multiple choice q's. Engaging lectures for sure but she sets up her class in a way that you have to be good at exam taking, otherwise you will not pass. 3 major exams that make up pretty much the whole of the class - everything is weighted. Textbook helps a lot to reinforce what she is saying.
jess was great! I really enjoyed the lectures. she is a really tough grader, but put in the effort and pay attention and you'll be good. come to lectures even though attendance isn't mandatory. the concepts were interesting and she kept class engaging. there are 4 assignments, a paper, and 2 exams.
I love Jess, she is very sweet and quirky-however, she is a tough grader and nit-picky. Attend class and go to her office hours, they will help you a lot! The research paper is broken down into three sections throughout the semester, along with two ENTIRELY exam-based exams. She is, however, flexible, so that is a perk.
Few assignments. First and 2nd to last assignments are a pain in the butt but doable. Two Tests that focus on every detail of notes taken in class especially the little minor details. Like that she splits final assignment in 3. and an easy presentation. Jess gets everyone involved in the class and is cool. She likes the show Friends tho which sucks
She is a great professor and you definitely need to attend class because her exams are based on her lecture notes.
Shes a great professor and clearly cares about her students. Attendance is not graded although it necessary in order to pass the class! Only grades 3 or exams and a final paper. She writes all the exams herself and they are difficult. You will need to apply yourself in order to pass.
Dr Abrams is a great professor. Lectures are full of information and engaging. A few group presentations and 3 exams. Read all the articles before the exam and you'll pass the exams.
Her lectures are incredible; I always looked forward to class because of that. However, your grade is based on 3 exams, 1 paper, and some discussion questions (she won't warn you ahead of time that she's giving those out) -- not many assignments for wiggle room. I found her tests do-able; she asks a lot of application questions. Very approachable.
Jess is the best professor I have ever had. She is knowledgable and her lectures are amazing. I actually feel like I am learning something in her course instead of reading a textbook. She teaches in a way that makes it simple to learn for everyone, and actually makes you learn instead of memorizing material. I wish every professor was like her!
Jess is incredibly knowledgeable and a great professor. Her lectures are organized, and while attendance is not mandatory, be sure to show up because they are not posted online. She was the only professor I had this semester that actually inspired me as a Comms major. Only pitfall is that she is a notoriously tough paper grader.
Jess is nice but her lectures do not correlate to what is on the exams. If you want to pass the class you need to read the textbook. The exams are in person and on paper. There was one paper and she is a hard grader. Would not take her class again.
I don't usually write reviews but she is amazing and respectful. She pays attention even if you don't think she does and she knows your name. When she lectures it's mostly examples and less note taking. Exams are straightforward. 3 exams, 2 discussion questions and 1 self reflection paper. Your grade depends how well you do on the exams.
Professor Abrams is one of the most caring professors I've ever had! She does not offer many opportunities to earn points, so you really have to be on your game! Most of the points come from her three tests which are almost entirely based on lecture notes. Professor Abrams tells her students she does not give full credit for papers!!
Absolutely love Jess. She is very funny and open minded, and loves what she teaches. The only con to any of her courses is the fact that the only grades are the exams and maybe 1/2 other assignments throughout the semester. Do good on the exams and you'll be fine. Communicate your needs and she will accommodate.
Jess is one of the best professors I've had so far in college. It's obvious she truly cares about people and making sure they do well, which is invaluable. Beyond that, she's very knowledgeable about comms and more than open to learning from her students. The class is as hard as the material can be, but she def makes it more palatable/enjoyable.
Jess isn't a good professor. She can be very condescending, preachy, and her lectures are supposed to cover 75% of what is on exams but in lecture, she doesn't explain notes or examples. how well you do in her class is dependent on the students that are in the class. Some of the students in. my class liked to yap so we didn't always finish notes.
