This class is the bomb. You have to take it or any class she teaches at UCI or CSU Fullerton too!
Its a pretty easy class but you have to do the reading and pay attention. She is very helpful and willing to work with you if your struggling. There are assignments and tests so its a good mix. She's very nice and likes to do class discussions.
She is very helpful and willing to work with you if your struggling. Its not a hard class but you have to pay attention and do the reading. She likes to o a lot of class discussions and there is a good mix of asignments and tests.
She is a very easy going teacher. shes got alot of work that you have to do but its very easy. you can easily pass this class with an A
Difficult class. NOT HELPFUL. She gives you guidelines, but does NOT clarify anything. Interesting topics, but super hard to actually learn alot, you just have to give her what she wants.
great class, very interesting, but you just have to ignore the fact that she will ask for class participation, and when you express your opinion, she will talk against it. She makes it very awkward for you when you say things, in turn making you never want to speak again.
Professor Alabi is pretty confusing. Everything she teaches is very interesting and class discussions are very fun and entertaining BUT her tests don't have anything to do with what she talks about. I pulled off a B only because so many people were doing so bad in her class that she had to give out extra credit.
You should really attend lectures. And DO THE OUTLINES the points will help you get the A in the end, because she doesn't do the normal 90-A grade scale. Her A starts at 92, and B starts at 84! Finding out what's on a quiz or test is like pulling teeth, she's very vague about what's on it. There's also a research paper.
Ok, so all the comments are pretty dead on. She is a great teacher but a little tough. Her quizzes are like midterms and you never really know what to study for. Im an A student and I got a C. You HAVE to attend class, the topics are really cool and the debates can get heated. The final research paper is killer!!
Very informative class discussions. About every two chapters. there's a 20-40 question quiz. She's approachable and available outside of class. Class is very detailed but you can get a good grade if you make an honest effort. She's very helpful. There's a huge final project which can really boost your grade. I'd recommend her!
This class was very enjoyable. We had great debate and watching some cool movies. Pretty easy class, just make sure to study for quizzes.
Horrible teacher and horrible class. Dropped it and took a W. It was horrible. She clearly favors some and picks on others.
I am not sure where the negative comments are coming from. Alabi is a tough teacher and shows her passion through her teaching. This class is incredibly informative and Alabi does a fantastic job. If you're ready for reality..take this class.
Completely discouraged me from ever attempting to call myself a sociology major again. Really nice teacher, really funny at times, but way too hard and loves to put people on the spot. She also loves to tell people how wrong their answers are. 75 question mid-term with no study guide! 40 question quiz on 2 chapters! don't take this class
This professor is very hard, but very good. I took some of the lecture for granted and didn't read on the first quiz. Big Mistake. I was able to drop that quiz though. She is very helpful during office hours, but a little annoyed by students who don't try. I was motivated to be a better student because I had to speak in class and write a paper
Good class. She so does not suck.
Dr. Alabi rocks! Yipeeeee!
I was looking forward to this class but was very disappointed. YES she is easy, but EXTREMELY confusing in regards to the final paper. Study guides are worthless. She can be condescending, which I guess is expected for this class though. Each "soc problem" we learn about is covered VERY briefly-- a tease for someone passionate on the subjects.
Alabi is very passionate about her field. Intimidating at times, but don't let her scare you! She loves her students to participate. Quizzes every other week, which come straight from lecture (which are straight out of the book). You can miss a couple classes, as long as they aren't test days. She follows her rubric strictly - easy to follow!
This teacher is pretty cool. Her class is almost always entertaining, whether it be her cracking jokes or engaging the class in a brilliant discussion, its rather fun. However, there are quizes every 2 weeks and the tests are somewhat challenging. As long as you study and read the book you will do fine. I recomend taking Mrs. Alabi.
Just be ready for the final paper. Decent class, not much to say other than that. Very liberal politically in her comments.
her class is interesting. shes chill and sometimes gets side-tack for a quite some time xp but it makes the class more fun. tests r easy if u study. read the book and you'll do fine. i recommend taking her class!
you're in for a ride! She definitly loves her syllabus
shes really cool. tests every 2 weeks but as long as you study youll do fine. only big thing in this class in the 7 page paper due at the end of the semester. other than that class is a piece of cake!
study for the quizzes, even if there is a lot, counts a lot towards your final grade, really follow her instructions when writing the papers, midterms and finals were surprisingly easier than the quizzes you really have to keep up with the reading, class participation will make your time go a little bit faster in this class
She yells instead of lectures, giving you the feeling in your stomach that you're in trouble. She's unwilling to help, even when you ask very clear, specific questions. She gets upset if you don't participate, but when you do, she looks for any reason to knock you down or make you look stupid. I will never, EVER again take a class she teaches.
Seriously, I'm a straight A student and I've never had to bust this hard for a C in my life. First C ever...there's periodic tests, no homework, attendence is mandatory, a final paper, and a group project. The paper has really vague guidelines and when you ask for help she'll tell you to figure it out. Like getting thrown to the wolves.
I really like her as a person and her lecture is pretty interesting, BUT i found her quizzes obnoxious and did not like the fact I had to put effort into getting an A. Pay attention to the lecture read, aka be a student and you should get a good grade.
You have a 7 page paper and a group presentation at the end. No midterm, but there are quite a few tests, that you MUST study for or else you are screwed. She likes pointing out people so pay attention and know what's up, or else. She likes making the students feel stupid at times. Become friends with the syllabus before asking!!!
Reasonable, follows the syllabus. You get four 25 question quiz which is straight out the textbook. Midterm, final, and a 7 page paper due at the end... APA format, double spaced.
Don't take a class with Alabi if you are a person that has trouble being on time. she locks the door at the exact moment the class is scheduled to begin. she is unhelpful and rude, and the class is quite boring. The entire class is centered around a research paper that has unclear guidelines and will be hell to complete.
Her lectures are amazing. She applies gender differences to real life situations to make it easier to understand. On the first test I got a D but after reading the book I got a 99.5% so her tests and quizzes are right out of the book. The project is a pain and you're on your own. Really interesting class but overall the class isn't doing well.
I took her for Introduction to Marriage and Family. She was a fantastic teacher! I always looked forward to her class. She is really funny, and interesting!
My favorite teacher at OCC to date. You will learn so much information and be able to apply it to your life! I highly recommend her Marriage and Family course!
Great teacher but hard class!
EXTREMELY HARD CLASS. She makes it near impossible to get an A and is proud of it. Class sucked but she was an awesome person I stayed for the entertainment and took an F in the class. STUDY AND TAKE LOTS OF NOTES ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND KEEP UP WITH THE READING.
Unless your major requires this class and she's the only professor available, do not take her class. She is VERY opinionated, so her word is law. Half of the students in the class I had with her dropped. 50% of the class. Dropped. Sociology majors, some with degrees, dropped. If they couldn't take her style of teaching, imagine everybody else.
This class is difficult and takes a lot of commitment on your part to take notes and read the text. She is an amazing teacher who allows and welcomes others to express and argue their opinions. There are 3 exams, 1 presentation, and 1 research paper. As long as you are committed you should be able to do well in this class
I have never had a professor who said on the first day of class that she'd rather be wearing Chucks and Dead Prez t-shirt. I love the fact that she is 100% real. Her class is hard only if you procrastinate, don't come to class, or just plain lazy. No study guide... ***Make flashcards based on all your lecture notes and use the book's website!!!!!
i love her! She is so funny and down to earth. Her class is tough if you do not put alot of time in to studying for the tests (there are only four) and there is one annotated bibliography that you have to present which is easy just time consuming. Bottom line, YES i would take her class again(:
The class is hard, but you will be fine if you study for the 3 exams. Even though her standards are very high, she gives you full credit if you turn in something. She is very nice and helpful, she always encourages to visit and talk to her at her office hours if you have problem. Take her if you want to study and are concerned about society.
She was a terrific teacher. The only class I had that didn't have mandatory attendance & the only class I always wanted to go to. Her tests are easy as long as you study for them. I loved the class & plan on taking more classes with her. Only this time I'll be sure to study more.
Professor Alabi is an amazing professor! She makes the class interesting and makes you want to be there. Her tests are easy if you read the chapters and study her notes. I highly recommend taking her class!!
she never replies to her email. Her instructions are never clear. She's the worst teacher ever!!! Her exams are stupid and hard.
Avoid taking this class. She talks about her life all class and we get nothing done. She is unclear about what she wants on tests. Unprofessional and really UNORGANIZED. Book is required. Exams are challenging to understand considering you don't learn much. Did not enjoy this class because of the professor. Do not recommend!
She was the worst professor I've ever had. Unhelpful, unclear at all. She suddenly added assignment of the three-pages essay called "take home exam" before few days of the final. She is annoying and mean.
I love her so much! Out of all the professors i had this last semester shes is the one i most enjoyed listening to in lecture. She was very funny, sometimes sarcastic. Things shes taught me i will never forget!!! AMAZING teacher, AMAZING person. shes super real, and actually cares about her student.
This teacher was by far the best teacher I've had in my 4 years of college. So helpful. Not to mention HILARIOUS. Keeps the class very interesting through out the whole year. Truly cares about the well being of her students and others. I would re take her class any day.
Dr. Alabi is a great teacher, her tests are hard but if you read the book and study her lecture notes you will be fine.
Well, If you have an issue with showing up to class, reading books, or studying, then do not take this class. Otherwise, one of the best classes I have ever taken. I took her marriage and family first and got a C but then came back to take Gender Studies and got an A. If you just put fort a little effort, this class is very enlightening.
At frist seems like she going to be really nice and fun then the confusion starts nothing is clear she gets the questions out of the air for test not in book not in notes very much confused lady
I would not recommend this professor at all for anyone .completly disorganized, and lack of communication with students. She completly failed me even though I did not do that great on the exams. It was complete bs i did every assignment & got full points and also did extra credit as well as had perfect attendance. her teaching stylehorrible
Doctor Alabi is awesome and she may seem unorganized sometimes but it's almost never her fault (she has health issues and stuff). She is very fair. She is the only adult I've met who seems to actually care for the future generation. Take her class and ask lotsa q's and you'll be fine.
Dr. Alabi isn't going to be an easy A, but she is worth it! College isn't all about getting the credits to pass and move on to your mediocre job. It's about learning and growth too. She is a great teacher, she works hard and expects you to as well. I've taken both Marriage & Family and GNDR. She's by far my favorite teacher @ OCC.
This class is super wack. A lot of reading. Test are long fill in the blank and multiple choice. If you don't spend a lot of time reading and studying every detail in the book then you will fail the test. The professor is super cool, but she need to realize that this is not Nasa or open heart surgery. To much brain damage for a class like this. ..
She is very disorganized and unclear of what will be on tests. You have to read every little detail in the book in order to do good on her tests. She never lets you know about your grade. Did I mention that she skipped maybe 3 weeks of school and it was only one day a week? Because of this she let us take the final exam open note and open book...
She isn't nice.
She's very funny. She's also very unclear about what's on the test. All you have to do is turn in a blank piece of paper with your name on it (you make your own study guide) and you get 10 extra points. There's a multiple choice test from the crazy long reading she assigns, and fill in the blank part of the test from the lecture. Good luck.
Not a hard class to pass. Note taking is a must to pass the tests and there is one big paper. Some extra credit, little class participation.
She's really one of the best professors ever! I don't know how people say she's too hard and to stay away! Anyone who says that aren't being serious about their education; education is meant to be challenging, that's the only way we grow and develop. I'll recommend her to anyone and everyone. Go Alabi! c:
Very Vague when it comes to test day. Her lecture test is conceptual which means that its concept based questions. Very Hard! Lots of readings! HAVE TO READ TO PASS!
I love taking her classes they are always the most interesting and hilarious professor ever. Her class is easy aslong as u study and pay attention in class. In her exams she incorporates both the lecture slides and the textbook, with a fill in the blank for the terms in her powerpoint and then main points in the textbook as multiple choice question
She was very outgoing and speaks her mind so be prepared if you disagree with her. She gives you a multiple choice test based on book and fill in blanks from lecture. You need the book because of the test. She has one paper thats due at the end of semester. Int really clear of whats on the test. No study guide.
I decided to take gender studies to get a gen ed out of the way; although the class was interesting, I had to drop it midway through the semester because I was failing. She sends our lecture notes out by email which forces her to talk about nothing of relevance in class. The tests are close to impossible so save yourself the energy & don't take her
The first day she will seem intense but as the semester goes on she is actually very intelligent and passionate. Attendance not mandatory at all. she didn't take attendance once and the lectures get emailed to you. She cares about her students and you can tell she is passionate about her job. Very intelligent as well. One of my favorite professors!
Class is somewhat fun and informative. Wish she would let you use notes for the exams. Very difficult tests!! So unclear about what is going to be on the tests, wordy, fill in the blank to 20 definitions of difficult words. Would not recommend
Those test though..... Amazing person, she really does care about all her students and making it a safe learning environment for all. I would totally take her again if she had more homework, I know that is crazy to say but when your grade is just on test scores and one essay, it stresses you out if you are not a strong test taker.
The class meets once a week, she has missed two so far. Material appears on the test that was not on the study guide. She's excited about the subject, and seems super intelligent and informed, just doesn't put in the work to get to class!!!
Dr. Alabi is one of the most disorganized professors I have ever had. The class was only difficult because of how unclear directions and study guides were. She is not good at grading accurately either, there has been many times where answers were wrong on her part, not the students. It's incredibly frustrating to be in her class.
I took this class in order to satisfy social sciences requirement, but I enjoyed this course way more than I anticipated. Dr. Alabi is a caring, hilarious, and knowledgeable woman, she makes it known that her main goal is to educate her students so they can make a difference in the world when it comes to gender, which I think she succeeds at!
Shes extremely unorganized! We meet once a week and she either is late (by 30 minutes once) or is sick and doesnt show up. She projects her opinion more in her lecture than the actual criteria. She gets off topic A LOT! Her 75 question test is something you DEFINITELY need to study for and even so dont expect to get an A.
Take her class! Dr. Alabi is very passionate about her teaching. The class discussion/lectures are informative and fun (I never wanted to miss a class). Do the work and you can pass easily. Music and Movies are impeded into the classes to connect and help with learning and understanding! I would recommend any of her classes to EVERYONE!!!
She was a great professor and very inspirational. She cares about her students and teaches based off of the real world and not just textbook memorization. If you may attention and do the work you will get an A.
Tests are very specific to the readings. Multiple choice are based on readings and study guides (if given) are very vague. Written portion (fill in the blank) has no word bank and is very difficult. Only homework assignments are worth 5 points each which are notes taken on the readings and a research project worth 80 points.
Professor Alabi is awesome but she is always late to class. I have taken her two times GENDER 100 &130 and i really like her. However, she canceled class too many times and we didnt got to cover all her lecture. Theres two side of the test multiple choice and fill in.
It was very difficult to know what was expected bc nothing was consistent and while Dr. Alabi is a beautiful soul, she was late to class and cancelled it often. The lectures had absolutely nothing to do with the tests and there is a huge amount of self study required. Her lectures were heartfelt, and impactful, but class management was poor.
She is interesting to listen to and provides a lot of good information, rather than just reading a textbook to us. She has an impressive resume and is really down to earth and kind.
Very opinionated and if your opinions don't align then you have a hard time in the class and it is very uncomfortable. Most of the grade comes from the lectures, which don't align with the book so the book is pretty useless. If you don't take notes on the lectures or pay close attention it is hard to pass the tests.
She's a caring professor, but she's kinda off on her schedule since she has many commitments. Her lectures are kinda boring. There are 2 exams, a lot of short analyses and writing, but she's an easy grader. There's also a research project which is kinda huge, and she didn't explain it very well so it might be very confusing to start.
The professor has very strong opinions. I dont identify as conservative but I can understand how some of her students who do might feel picked at.
This class should be titled liberal indoctrination. It is sad that this counts for college credit. The teacher is so biased and practices discrimination. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. TAKE A REAL COLLEGE CLASS.
The professor claims she is there for students but she really is not. She has habits that are despicable as a professor. She calls out student how dont have the same political opinions in class. As a person I know its wrong and this person with a doctorate degree she should know better. A professor should not do this.
Terrible teacher!!! Her comments were mean and unprofessional. Everything is one sided. You do not have your opinion in this class. And if you do your won't pass. Does not give any criteria and after you turn in your work she gives you bad score for not doing what she expected. But she does not say what she expects until the work is already graded!
Do not take this class her homework are confusing as hell, give an ungodly amount of homework which are essay based. Her test are really really hard and are oddly specific. This class did not translate well in an online format
The class has lots of busy work and gives about one homework assignment each week. If you take lecture notes and read the material the class is easy and interesting. Dr. Alabi gives hard tests, but if you study you will do well.
Professor Alabi lacked professionalism in the classroom, was unreachable throughout most of the semester, and the class lacked clear structure. Assignments took so long to be graded that little development could be made throughout the semester. The content was super interesting but Professor Alabi made it very difficult to enjoy Sociology.
Classwork was fine. professor is the issue. Class was asynchronous, but she's terrible at communication. Takes days to reply to emails and sometimes not even reply at all. And when she did frequently misinterpreted the questions asked, like she barely read the email. + several more frustrating behaviors I cannot fit into the character limit. Avoid.
I think overall Professor a Alabi is pretty decent as a professor. She is more like a robot than a person though. She will make it nearly impossible to get an A. While she provides a study guide to prepare for the exams, they do not include much of the information on the exam. Wish she was more emotionally sensitive with grades, no extra credit.
I felt bad after giving a 2 star review the Professor is just ok but deserves 2.5-3 stars. She would not feel bad while she grades harshly.
Professor Alabi is a tough grader and gets mad when directions are not followed to the T. If you can't follow very long winded directions, be ready to get a poor grade. Read the directions multiple times before doing anything as they are always very long and contain a lot of info.
there were lots of errors in her tests. she gave assignments every week but they were doable and very tedious because we had to write 300-500 words, just for her to not read it. sometimes instructions are confusing because she doesn't explain it well and then gets mad at us. she's also a very slow responder when it comes to emails and slow grader.
Jessica requires a lot of work and reading for a course that is a GE requirement. If you are just doing a GE requirement, save yourself and DONT take her. There are many other professors who assign less work but you still learn as much. Her instructions for assignments are VERY long and unclear. The stress isnt worth it.
Dr. Alabi has tests that have many questions partaking to the content learned in the textbook, however about 30% of all her test questions pertain to her own discussion notes, meaning that if you dont pay attention to what she has to say about topics in class, you will miss those questions. Instructions on final project were very unclear/confusing.
Ignore the bad reviews, most people who rated decided to take an intersession course knowing that it is a semester's worth of content (16 weeks) squished into 4 weeks of intersession, most have a false ego thinking they can do it when they don't commit their time into learning. The tests are a lot of questions but they take 10-20 seconds.
Very condescending would never give you constructive feedback on your assignments. 2 big projects that she didn't clearly address the instructions she wanted, so if you did something she didn't like she would call you out on it, but not give you a chance to explain yourself or ask questions. Wouldn't even reply to your questions or emails.
You have to come to class each time if you want an A. I missed two classes the whole semester and it brought my grade down to a C and I had to do extra credit to bring it up, all because I missed an in person group discussion about a video. Her class materials (text book, final project) don't align with her lectures at all.
There aren't many assignments in this class so make sure to do them right. There is enough time to complete them. However do NOT wait until the last minute to finish the final project. There is a reason why she gives you all semester to complete it. Other than that I don't like her tone when she sends out announcements. Study for the long tests.
Took class online during Summer, plenty of time to get assignments done. She is very helpful with questions. You will be doing a large research powerpoint project that you must to do pass the class. It isn't too hard as she makes it very clear as for what you should do. Free textbook and a few exams.
Prof Alabi is a nightmare. Her tone in announcements is condescending, snarky, and very passive aggressive. This is supposed to be a GE class, yet was excruciating. The final big project is absolutely stupid. She demands for a lot of information, yet limits students to a maximum of 16 slides. She is so tedious and specific. Be wary of final project
It is not an easy A class for GE. You *will* be forced to learn with the required material and assignments. I took this class for Intersession so it was intense, workload and deadlines were always on crunch. Had a lot going on in my life so couldn't give it 100% but I think I'll pass with a B. Take it if you REALLY need the class or major in it.
Prof Alabi is TOUGH. Please really pay attention to all of her announcements. There are not many assignments but make sure you follow her instruction CORRECTLY. The final project are heavy, that's why she told you to start doing it in the beginning of the class. As long as you follow her instruction, you'll be fine in this class.
The class is tough, with long, detailed assignments and tests that require careful attention to the textbook and lecture notes. But unstuck study can help make the workload more manageable.
worst professor i've had so far! dont take her!
She gave me an F on an assignment because I use the word “Hispanic” which, according to her is a racist word, even though I'm Hispanic myself, and it's not racist at all.
she gave me an F on an assignment because I used the word in Hispanic
awful professor!!
she accused me of cheating on my assignment because i have good grammar
Here's an itemized list of her nonsense - Can't use tech - Gives no feedback - Late to class DAILY - Brought in a guest speaker who had absolutely nothing to do with course, wasted an entire class on this person two weeks before our final when we were already behind - Ridiculous annotated bibliography assignment with no feedback
Ugh. Prepare to waste your time in this class with lectures! Absolutely nothing in the lectures are on the test, everything is in the textbook and most of the lecture period was eaten up by her just doing Q&A with the class, letting people trauma dump in class and talking about herself. It's so frustrating and the assignments are basically useless.
None of her lectures prepare you for the exams, you need to read the textbook. She is not good with tech. Do not even bother trying to contact her or ask for feedback bcs she won't give you any.
Her lectures/class activities wont prepare u for the exams. They have nothing to do with exams and youll need to teach urself the material from the textbooks.
Online class. There was an assignment due on the first day of class at 7 AM, if you don't complete it you are dropped. A lot of work to turn in with hardly any time. I had to take a 100-question exam less than one week into my course, and I had only 70 minutes to complete. Stressful and confusing. Trick questions/definitions.
This professor's exams and quizzes set us up for failure. No one in the class got a grade higher then a C and exams had things we didn't go over. Manageable weekly papers, most information usually from videos or prior knowledge. we had to wait to be able to download the textbook as only 2 ppl could open it at a time. Professor was very ableist
I was in her intro to gender studies class. definitely not an easy class. you have to read the entire book for the extremely hard chapter tests and her lectures are unclear and confusing. she also has a lot of attitude which can be fun but not when its directed at you. Overall not a fun class and i was really exited for it when i signed up.
don't use words like black or Hispanic or she will give you an F, make sure research project is done correctly or she will get so mad
I don't know why she has so many good reviews, she is not a good professor
It is not an easy A class for GE. You *will* be forced to learn with the required material and assignments. I took this class for Intersession so it was intense, workload and deadlines were always on crunch.
I took her for Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies. She's a pretty tough grader. -10% for every day hw is turned in late. Tests are hard with less than 1 min per question, 5000 word ethnic study final. I would take a different professor if given the opportunity.
She sends condescending announcements each week telling you if you don't follow instructions, you'll fail the class. She also cares about the word count over content. Her final project is a 5,000 word presentation that you HAVE to do well on to pass, but it is very confusing since her instructions are unclear.
I think she's not personally for me. A lot of people seem to like her, but she's a little disorganized and her class is harder than I expected and don't think it's worth this much effort unless you're going into ethnics for your career.
Even if you have an A in the class and a perfect score, but If on the final project you don't do exactly as she says you not only fail the project, you fail the class. She goes on and on about her personal life every class talks endlessly about things that are never on the actual EXAMS.TAKE THIS CLASS AT A DIFFERENT SCHOOL TRUST ME.
Extremely tough grader on the final project. Does not give any meaningful feedback and is rude if you ask for it.
Not sure why everyone is complaining so much. She is a very straight forward professor and while the final project is a little difficult to fill out, it is the only tough thing to do the entire semester. Fair grading overall.
LITERALLY TAKE ANYBODY ELSE. she makes a 3 unit ETHS100 class feel like 5 units. for what????????? 4 week class has way too much homework. way too much reading. she is way too strict on her grading policy. and will fail an assignment/your FINAL GRADE for the smallest things. she is as bad as everyone says. i wish i wouldve dropped the class.
I took ETHS 100 this summer to just get it out of the way. It was very intense for being a 4-week class, but I honestly enjoyed the material and Dr. Alabi herself. She does outline clear expectations in her grading and provides good feedback, where I think she looks to see actual application of the material in your work which can come off as harsh.
Took this fall semester online and was an easy A. She barely assigns anything and her assignments are very easy and took minimal effort. The only hard thing was project bc instructions are a little confusing but she gives you all semester and is very helpful if you have questions.
