Really smart, young, funny, and cute as a button. What more could a guy ask for? Seriously though, Jessica is awesome. I highly recommend taking her for anthropology. And yes, I would say she's hot, although she is nice enough that she would probably disagree. It's always nice to have a teacher who is easy on the eyes, if you know waht I mean.

Her test are not hard, but they challenge you to think. and you have to know the book. basically if you show up you will do great on the tests, but i missed the first 2 weeks so i dropped. but she is a nice teacher though, very funny and normal. she knows her stuff, but you have to go to class.
I think she's a great teacher. You have to go the classes because she lectures everyone that's going to be on the test. She keeps the class interested and laughing. I look forward going to her class, definately my favorite this semester.
I had a lot of fun in this class. It was my favorite class this year. It's not an easy A. Good movies too.
These reviews are misleading. Her assignments are confusing, and sometimes juvenile. I actually had to get in a group this semester and perform a skit (and do all the work, just like back in 9th grade). Not what I thought I'd be doing at 20 years old. She's down-to-earth, and wants people to do well, but just inexperienced.
Great class, great teacher. Best at Napa Valley and I didn't even need it for graduation.
Mrs. Amato is very cool. She's a sweet teacher who wants u to do good. I didn't even know what anthropology was and she lectures really good too. I really enjoyed her assignments. I am also taking her this sem for a diff class.
I think her class is the sh*t. She's freakin hilarious too. Make sure you ask her how to say bad words in mayan.
She is the best teacher i've gotten so far for Antro she's really helpfull all you need is to either email her or ask and she will explain everything to you and just read the txt book and come to class and you will pass with a flying A
This teacher expects you to think for yourself. If you arne't that kind of student, then beware. Good reading assignments and she is pretty.
This class wasn't bad. It wasn't great either. I would peg it down more to inexperience rather than her being a bad teacher though.
I have learned nothing in this class. It has been a huge disappointment. The class feels like it was created for 7th graders. Quite frustrating. I advise anyone taking this class to NOT think for themselves and just tell her what she wants to hear. I wasted a whole semester in this class. I just kept expecting that we would start learning but...
awesome in every way. my favorite class this semester. that other person doesn't know what they're talking about. i have taken two classes with miss amato and she's amazing and always wants your opinion and comments about things.
This class was hard but worth it. I had a lot of nurses in my class, but I am a psych major. Ms. Amato is a fantastic and devoted professor who really lights up the room with her lectures. Electric and dynamic! I don't know how she does it. I am an adult student and she always made me feel like I was valued in the course.
Overall, very good teacher. There are no test or quizzes which is cool, but her projects are quite challenging. I would take this class again because she is REAL nice and she is hot!
I loved her!if you needed to get a hold of her she gives u her instant messenger acct so you could IM her. go to the classes because you should take notes, tests were a little difficult but she is SO interesting where else are you going to meet someone who has had to eat squirrel? and has had parasites!? maybe a few but com'mon thats BAD ASS!
Excellent online class. The work was neither too hard or too easy. The textbooks were well written, easy to read and most importantly they were interesting. Professor Amato seems to really care about her students and has a very friendly online presence. I would highly recommend this professor.
Wow this was one of the funnest classes I have ever taken!! Prof. Amato loves to teach and you can really see that in her enthusiasm and passion for anthropology. DEFINITELY recommend taking any of her classes. Im taking them even though I dont need them for an AS!
It is very obvious that she was meant to become a teacher. She is enthusiastic, fun, and detail oriented. Her classes are excellent and never boring. She has ignited in me a passion for anthropology and school in general. She is very relateable and easy to approach. Her classes always challenge me to think harder and be open minded.
Linguistics is the best class! I am physically sad when it is cancelled I love going so much. Amato is awesome and really laid back. She will call you out on stuff though. She is a walking encyclopedia and I don't think there's anything she doesn't know about human behavior. Take it!
Jessica is an outstanding teacher. She is passionate about her field and her students. She enjoys teaching a lot and is very resourceful. The key to earning A in her class is the extra credit she hands out (a lot). I enjoy her stories about her anthropological work in Mexico and the Caribbean.
GREAT great teacher. Passionate about her profession and what she teaches. Not too much and not too little homework. When she does give homework like readings, the readings are interesting and eye-opening. Grades fairly and doesn't play favorites. NO COMPLAINTS about this teacher. DEFINATELY ONE OF THE BEST I'VE HAD.
Love this class and this prof! I was interested in the subject before attending, now I am passionate about it!
Amazing instructor. Very passionate about her work to the point that she makes the class very passionate about the subject as well. Very knowledgeable about her subjects, very open, serious about you learning. Come to class, not that you ever want to miss it, pay attention and read the very intreguing reading subject matters. Recommmend this cla
Professor Amato is amazing and her anthro class was my favorite class at Napa Valley College. Before taking her class I didn't know much about anthropology, but after the semester I want to study it more. Every class was packed with information and her teaching style makes it interesting.
Excellent Professor. Amazing individual, very experienced, professional, fun, and down to earth. She is very passionate about her subject and about life. Do as your are told (now that we are in college) and you will do fine. You get out of it what you put into it. Definitely recommend class and Instructor.
This is my favorite professor at NVC! Her lectures are engaging and the class discussions are enthralling. There is a common misconception that she is an easy grader. This isn't true. I received an F on my first paper, but she told me how I could make up for this in the future. My final class grade was an A. Look no further than Amato for Anthro.
Great teacher! Feels like you have known her all your life! Very engaging in discussions and loves to learn about her students backgrounds and cultures. I would for sure take her class again
I took cultural anthropology online with this instructor. It was a great class! Grade was based on weekly discussion, 4 tests + a book critique.
I took Amato for Anthro 121 online. I do not recommend you take her for this class. She is very hard to get ahold of and never returns phone calls or emails. The material is interesting but the class is not structured leaving the students confused and to fend for themselves. I say take her class in person? Hopefully it will be better than this one
I'll just keep it simple. Nutrition major. Took her class. Now an Anthro major. If you don't want to risk having an incredible life changing experience, I suggest that you look elsewhere.
I took Dr. Amato's archaeology class "just for fun". Now I am seriously considering changing to anthropology because of what I learned from her, and what she helped me to learn about myself. Any class of hers is never a waste of time, and she really has a true talent for teaching. Five-star experience!
She makes science really fun and interesting. very professional but still funny. make sure you read the book, the tests are all on the book and slides.smart and wants to help you learn, always helped me when I asked or was confused. Wonderful instructor.
Jessica is passionate about what she teaches. She's an amazing person and has a lot of incredible stories to tell. I enjoyed her class-when she was actually there. She was sick a lot and classes were cancelled often, which was a bummer because I loved the class. Her exams are fairly difficult, but if you attend class and truly care, you will pass
This professor is a delight. I am so happy that Napa has her and any student should find time to take her 122 or 120 class. Prof. Amato truly cares about her students success and although I got a B in both classes at least she completely helped me understand how to do better. A MUST if you want a quality education.
Very difficuly class. She is constructive and you can tell she really values her class, sadly the relationship you have with her is based off of how smart you are. If you don't understand she won't be as friendly. Which is unfortunate.
I really like Dr. Amato but she can be intimidating. She is very smart and she knows it. Great personality though! Class is fun but too many slides! Gives extra credit. She is fair and treats you with respect even if you suck at biology. All multiple choice tests. If you need help she will make sure you get it. I will prob get a C- got an F in Bio.
Dr. Amato was a touch teacher, but loved her subject. Had good lectures, and a fun way of presenting the information. She was late to class a lot and there were many days she didn't come, yet the information skipped was still expected of us on exams. Her way or the high way! Wouldn't recommend disagreeing with her, had a "strong" personality.
I loved this class! Prof Amato has super clear lectures that make a potentially boring topic (biology) come to life! She gives you all of her lecture slides so you can study. Def need to study hard. Tests are easy if you show up. I am now at Davis and feel way more prepared after taking her class. She will not dumb it down or give you an easy a.
Love Ms. Amato, but as a lab/science teacher, she isn't really clear. Her tests are multiple choice but they're never what you expected them to be. Seems to drift off a lot and digresses from the topic constantly. Very laid back, yet stern at the same time. No homework, just memorising for tests.
Amato is a great teacher. My only warning is if she injures herself, drop her class! Aug-Sept she was absent A LOT. In Oct she stopped showing up; in Nov the class was told our sub will be permanent. In Nov we were finally told our current grade. So this rating is based off when she DID show to class and the effect her absents had on the students.
The only complaint I have about this class is she is incredibly hard to reach by email. You need to email her multiple times to get a response. This class is also graded on 2 papers and a midterm. If you mess up on one you are screwed the rest of the semester
Excellent experience. Enough to make me come on this website and rate it. I would take any class she teaches and you will learn a lot. She owns the classroom and her lectures are well done and inspiring. Pay attention because her tests will kill you if you don't.
Best class ever. Do it. Im felt like I was watching stand up comedy the entire semester. Dr. A is the real deal!
Professor Amato is a really cool professor and a cool person. She keeps the class fun and interesting, and is flexible about schedules. If you finish your lab early you may leave and she is really attention grabbing in lecture. The first quiz on osteology requires a lot on memorization, but overall is a fun and interesting course.
I took Anthropology in another college a few semesters ago and I didn't like it at all maybe it was just the professor. With Dr. Amato I really did enjoy her class, she makes lectures and lab's fun. Attendance is mandatory in order to pass the class. Go to class everyday and read the assigned chapters and you will defiantly pass this class!
Online class. Her assignments are annoying, but she's very easy. Her tests depend on how well you know the material. I would highly recommend using quizlet as a study resource for her weekly quizzes (hint, hint). She's full of personality and she's very funny. Easy A if you turn everything in.
Dr. Amato really loves what she teaches, so she will influence you to love it too. I don't usually do good in science classes, but with her great energy and teaching abilities I excelled in this class. I definitely recommend her class to anyone and everyone. Aside from being an amazing teacher she is very caring and understanding.
Really cool teacher and class
Sets time limits on assignments and enforces them. Fair and encouraging. Creates interesting assignments.
She is a professional within her field of anthropology and is very passionate about it. Her lectures are meaningful and educational at the same time, which can be heavily reflected in her personality. She wants you to pass and will do whatever she needs to help you if you take the time to reach out to her. She incorporated Remind for accessibility.
I took her online class and it was fine but be ready to read the whole textbook. Its a lot of reading and she knows its a boring sometimes so she makes the assignments based on the reading fun. Also there is a test every week on Tuesday.
I took this class online and I think Professor Amato is simply amazing. Her class is super organized. She gives reading every week and test based on that particular weeks reading but the readings are super fun and interesting. She's very understanding and replies in time. Plus there will be weekly participation for easy credit.
You can tell that she cares about the subject matter, and genuinely wants you to understand the material. She does give extra credit opportunities, and study guides that help. Make sure to take her lab too!!! The lab helps with the lecture (2 separate classes, 4units total)
Professor Amato is an amazing professor! She is hilarious and makes assignments fun! Homework is time consuming so make sure to make time for it. I would highly recommend this class for students.
I love this class! Prof. Amato is a fantastic, energetic lecturer and an overall great teacher. I wish she could be more organized and she is sometimes 5-10 min late but she is an EXTREMELY knowledgeable researcher and her class is never boring. I still have a midterm to take but this is by far my fave class. She gets so excited and loves to chat.
She got sick a lot during my semester, but I was very impressed with Dr. Amato in lecture. Not only does she know her stuff, but she really knows how to teach it! She was super helpful when we needed her and very understanding. I was sad when she was out, but it wasn't her fault. I suck at bio, but I did awesome in this class. Our SI was great too!
I love Professor Amato! She's incredibly inspirational, caring, and super funny! I would definitely take her classes again. The key to getting a good grade in this class is simply do the work! Show her that you care.
She refuses to grade, provide lectures, or stay on top of literally anything. She doesn't reply to emails/is completely unavailable; this is a very self-taught class. The material is pretty easy but I didn't enjoy any of the assignments. Definitely don't take her if you care about seeing your grades, getting help, or actually learning anything.
This professor gives too much homework each week as if we dont have a life or other classes. She always had an excuse as to why she was unavailable. She doesnt grade all of your work until the end so you dont really know your progress. She gives between 10-15 assignments a week.
You get what you put into it, simple as that. Don't slack off, ask questions and you'll do fine! She's really nice and offers extra credit!!
I normally avoid online classes but this semester there was no choice. I really liked Professor Amato's class. She is someone I respect because she treats her students like they are on the same level, like everyone is in this together. Also an amazing lecturer herself. There are many things to keep up with but it felt rewarding in the end.
Absolutely unbearable for the student that values education and time. She won't stay on one subject. She assigns an unbearable amount of work. Very odd speaker, educator. Would make an amazing kindergarten teacher.
I don't understand some of the reviews. Her class was the best of the three that I had during the pandemic. She is clear about what is expected and gave us flexibility. The workload was high but not insanely hard if you keep up with it. Don't try to do everything at the end, which I think where some people got into trouble. Very approachable!
I didnt mind that there was a lot of hw that was due every week but wow I rly wished that she would keep up with the grading. The class just felt REALLY unorganized but maybe thats just me. Shes really nice when u ask her for help tho. She isnt terrible like how some people make her out to be but just be mindful that there will be a lot going on.
Dr. Amato is clearly very knowledgeable and an interesting lecturer. She has a good sense of humor that keeps online class fun. ANTH 120 is an intro class so it is relatively easy, do the weekly readings and you'll be just fine. Online there was a lot of structure which I found helpful. Would take again :)
I don't want to attack her character, I think she is a caring human-being, but I'll focus on her teaching style. She is extremely disorganized. She takes forever to grade things. She spends more time trying to be funny than getting her message directly across. She makes her political stance clear, and that is very unprofessional. I Don't recommend.
At the time I added this class I had NO idea what anthropology was. Class is both interesting and challenging. Professor Amato is very sweet and really knows her field. The Canvas part is very clear and Zoom quiz reviews are super helpful. The class helps change your perspective on things. Stay current with the work and it is an easy A.
Dr. Amato's class was a great class. The Canvas system is very organized, and her lectures are so passionate and full of information that sometimes we will go over time and everyone just stays in Zoom because her talks are so interesting. I learned a LOT in this class, more than I ever thought I would. She's not an easy professor but is nice.
Great class, great teacher. I appreciated her flexibility and her passion for teaching. She is probably one of the best I've had at NVC. Treats you like you are a real person with a real life. The lab manual is kind of boring but an online lab is really boring anyway. I also took her for 1231 this same semester and that class was good too.
Dr Amato is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about a really cool subject. It IS a tough class. The tests are difficult and you really really really gotta diligently read through the material to have a chance at getting a good grade on them. A lot of homework. The lectures are wonderfully informative but don't aid the tests much.
Currently taking professor Amato's Bio-Anthro 120. First might I say she is an amazing professor. She so much patience with us and she gives us a lot of help. As a 32yr old full time working mom who hasn't been in college since my 20s she has been so amazing. She really cares about us learning the material. She loves what she does and it shows.
Professor Amato is sweet but doesn't reply fast. Sending couple emails to remind her. The labs are in pdf which you correct yourself but automatically get full points for completing on TIME. The catch is you have 9 days to submit work in late, however 10% is deducted each day. Example: 3 days late- 70% without the points you got.
She got sick/injured sometimes so a few assignments were posted late. Be prepared to commit a good amount of time to this class. Labs helped more on tests than the textbook. No discussions after the first three weeks (at least for my semester). Somewhat easy to get ahold of, provides extra credit opportunities, and keeps her Canvas page organized.
Due to her being sick there was no real learning done this semester. She yaps about different topics and sometimes it relates on what we are learning. For the 6 week course it wasn't too rigorous but there was one paper, one test and one final. I wish i had more time with her she's a great person to chat.
Doesn't respond to emails
Very easy and fun class, my only critique is that it is hard to reach her by email, and eventually had to text her via phone.
Dr Amatos teaching style is not the best, yaps most of the time about random things and almost never focuses on lecture. Random and few assignments for the entire semester. Good luck
I will hand it to her; she does care about her students. Besides that, she cancels classes a lot, she tends to get off track a lot, you don't know when she is off and on topic so it's like a scavenger hunt with her words. Very little assignments and they all tend to be quite confusing. Would not recommend if you have a hard time focusing.
Dr. Amato is a ridiculously smart person who wants her students to do well in a hard subject. I loved her class -- definitely take it instead of biology.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. My lab group is fun, labs will not kill u and dr. j will keep the party going. but seriously i thought this class would kill me and it did not. lots of cool information and i appreciate the way to professor breaks it down for us. it makes me more confident and able to take on harder classes.
I took both Intro to Cultural Anthropology and the course focused on Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion, and both were excellent classes that taught me so much at a pace and with an enthusiasm that was very encouraging. Every module was clear, concise, and worked for me even with my busy schedule.
