DISGUSTING literally have not hated a prof this much shes literally the hardest marker for no reason when her instructions are not even clear. she had 4 online quizzes worth 40% and her questions literally dont make sense, shes a mess and her lectures are a mess AVOID HER at ALL COSTS she loves giving out bare c's
the worst prof that there is. she goes off on tangents that are not even relevant to the lecture for no reason. on top of that the most disrespectful marker there is, she marks hard even though her instructions are UNCLEAR. if you're going to given an assignment than be clear about wtf u want i dont get it. theres a group project and online quizzes
She is super smart. And knows her stuff. Sometimes I felt that the market was a bit unfair. But she talked to me about it at least. Overall a good class and a great prof.
Jessica is a sweetie but also totally tough. She wants you to read but till break it down for you. Go to office hours. It will help.
Awesome class. Totally changed the way I look at gender. Lectures easy to follow. Tough grader but fair. Group projects so if that's not your thing, maybe pick a different class.
taking this class with her was the biggest mistake. she makes you do SO many readings & talks way to quickly, its honestly hard to understand anything she's talking about. the assignment is a group-work (which is HELL.) class is so useless because she doesn't even teach anything.
Extremely chill and says real things you wouldnt expect a professor to say. Shes a fair marker and is open to feedback on how to improve the course
She's an awesome prof I would 100% take a class with her again but NOT THIS CLASS. This class just did not make sense to me at all, but she's a nice person this course just sucks (it was required). You better go to every lecture if you have to take this class
Jessica was a tough grader, even the online quizzes were hard. Just avoid ...
She marks pretty hard and isn't very clear on what she wants. She is approachable and understanding but overall I wouldn't take her class again. The readings are BRUTAL and super boring but she tests you on them so you gotta do them. There's also a group project worth 30% which was not fun.
Great prof. Super approachable, very flexible with deadlines, funny, personable, tells you what she's looking for and basically gives you the answer. Quizzes were online, open book, as long as you did the readings you were fine. Course was meh, but would take her again.
She doesnt really know how to teach. It was a mistake taking her, she marks REALLY tough. Im usually a 90s student and this course brought down my GPA. She gives you so many readings & talks too fast for you to pay attention in lecture. Everyone in my class was always confused on content. Take another prof!
Not the best prof and not the worst either. The assignment and group project were marked fair got around an 85 for both. The online quizzes were hit or miss, not terrible, gotta do the readings and some questions were unclear. The final exam was hard as there was no midterm so lots of content and was only multiple choice.
Not a bad person. The class is something which will be foreign to most Faculty of Arts students who take it. The group project is a bit of a pain to get all the group members to finish their work so I would have preferred if it could be avoided. Lots of multiple choice (test/exam), so no room for explaining your answer.
I loved Jessica Evans. Her lectures were fun and engaging with lots of helpful videos and graphics. She made Sociology of Popular Culture fun. The two minor criticisms I have were that she spoke fast (that did not bother me) and she is a bit of a tough grader, but I am overall happy with what I got in the class!! Would recommend to others!!!
she deserves more credit! goes out of her way to make lectures enjoyable and relatable, there if you ever need help, and constantly asks for students feedback. no midterm, essay, fun group project, and exam. really cares about students
Although she tends to talk a lot in her lectures, her quizzes are VERY easy. She also marks the essay really easy and wants to help you. Shes very accommodating and caring and tries her best to make sure you get a good grade. Definitely would recommend her!
I had this school winter semester and when the pandemic hit, Professor Evans was very understanding. She gave regular lectures by Zoom and checked in with us. She also consulted us when restructuring the class and made sure we had a good understanding of the topics.
great
Honesty was a great lecturer and interesting to listen to but you don't have to stress because as long as you understand her main points you can easily relate the rest from the textbook or slides. Would definitely take her classes again.
Extremely well spoken and very intelligent. Honestly one of my fav Ryerson professors. Had her for two classes one semester and enjoyed working for my grade in each class. Even went to see her during office hours and I don't typically do that unless i really care about the material. Show her you care and it will pay off. Not many like her.
Honestly, Jessica is a sweet lady who cares about her students. Material isn't hard at all, and her lectures are well structured and clearly explained. However, she is definitely a tough marker. Just put in a good amount of effort and you'll do fine.
Poor explanation of assignments. Her lectures are boring with information you can read from the textbook. She makes sociology much harder than it should be.
marks hard & assignments are unclear but shes nice and somewhat helpful one on one. id never take her again
Professor Evans wasn't a bad online teacher. She apparently changed her usual assignments for Qualitative data. The assignments are all connected. You first start with choosing a topic, and then choosing a research question from that topic(from a literature review *5 pages +5 sources), then you have the big paper which is 10 pages (double spaced)
Great professor overall! The rubrics for her assignments are a bit vague though, so I suggest asking her any questions you have ASAP.
She's really chill and nice, however, her recorded lectures are long and dry. I think she's a fair Marker overall. Quizzes were straightforward and easy. Assignments were explained well. She takes a while to respond to emails however her feedback is very helpful. Also, 30% of our mark was from discussion posts, so easy 100% on 30% of the class.
Dr. Evans is a great prof. Very accessible, really cares about you and works with you closely on the final proposal. The course is made of one big proposal chunked throughout the semester. I honestly barely read the course materials and lectures but found it relatively interesting. The assignment is fun and creative and I would recommend this prof!
She was a great professor and very accommodating! It seemed a little overwhelming at first but the workload is manageable and she does check-ins throughout the semester to explain things further if needed. She graded fairly and there's a clear grading criteria but she provides little feedback. Overall, she's a great choice!
First day of my second class with her (took one in first year as well) and had to come here to say she's amazing! I love the way she addresses her students, such a refreshing and respectful person. If you have the opportunity, take a class with her!
Amazing Prof, one of the most understanding prof I've ever had. Will definitely take her class again!!
Class was asynchronous and every end of module we had a zoom to review. For participation we needed to complete quizzes and discussions post which you only got 0,7 or 10, so you need to be careful with the posts. It was a lot of material to read, watch and listen plus a literature review that was almost immediately after we entered the course.
Jessica was so chill during her lectures! She explains things well, records the lectures and posts them every week so you can catch up if you miss a class. She is a bit of a tough marker, but is willing to explain what went wrong.
Jessica was PHENOMENAL!! Her lectures were really engaging and very applicable to current world events. You only have a couple assignments which are clearly outlined and fairly easy if you understand the concepts. In tutorial we had to have discussions with classmates for participation. She is the most caring prof I've ever had. Ugh I miss her
I definitely enjoyed the class content and the way it was presented. Jessica was energetic and had some great humour in class. Some cons: emails are not responded to quickly and grading criteria for the papers were not always clear. But an overall good class as it spoke about real life issues!
DONT TAKE HER. Very unreasonable marking. I am a 90 student and she brought me lower after following her instructions yet tells you things are not making sense and are unclear. THIS IS NOT A BIRD COURSE. Especially with her marking, I was so confident in assignments but feedback does NOT align with her instructions. just no.
She was very passionate about teaching but assignments were very unreasonable. Do not recommend.
Keeping up with your readings and paying attention in class is my only advice. She makes it easy to focus on her lectures because she is so engaging in the class and open to different opinions and ideas. Most definitely one of my favourite profs and made my first semester quite enjoyable.
Shes super supportive and kind, knows a lot about her subject and is super passionate. The lectures are quite monotonous though. Doesnt do formal exams or tests, just unit quizzes
Had her for the second time in a row now and she is truly amazing. Her assignments, tests, and quizzes are straightforward and you can easily get 90% and above. I 100% recommend her, you will not regret it. Also, she does not mark your stuff, the TA's do. You'll do good being in her class still, she will fix any of your concerns and issues
Easily one of the most caring professors I've had, very accessible outside of class. Pretty clear she wants everyone to do well, and will go out of her way to help you. Rubric and instructions can sometimes be a bit unclear, but she'll clarify anything if you ask.
She's very nice and understanding. Gives lots of time to do work. Lectures take too long. Attended once and never again and still passed. Great prof in general.
Super nice and made lectures engaging. Gives lots of time to do assignments and is extremely helpful when you ask her questions.
I LOVED PROFESSOR EVANS! She made me love this class.
My favourite class for the semester. The lectures were really fun and entertaining and the material not hard to understand. Make sure you ace those reading quizzes or they'll really bring your mark down. There's also a short paper (marked by t.a) and a media assignment that stands in place of the exam.
Very good at explaining the lecture concepts and relating them to her own admirable area of research. Provides very clear and straightforward instructions on all assignments. I highly recommend Dr. Evans!
Great professor. Lectures are not boring and she has a way of encapsulating multiple pov very well. Usually finished lect early. Grading is always clear and she leaves great feedback so you know exactly what to adjust. Her outlines and templates are amazing for assignments. Everything was very clear and organized & she always posted the content.
Genuinely such an amazing and knowledgeable professor. Her lectures were engaging and easy to follow, she truly knows and is passionate about what she is talking about. Her quizzes may contain some tricky wording but as long as you follow her lectures, the content is easy to follow, recommend her for all SOC courses!
She is awesome! Highly highly recommend her! Not only is the final assignment super straightforward, but you don't have to do any coding! Just a mock report!!!!
Professor Evans is very caring and a very straightforward teacher. She cares about her students and was great all semester. Thank you Professor Evans.
Professor Evans was an amazing professor. Her lectures were interesting and informative. Her assignments were very straight forward with clear outlines. I feel like she was a bit of a hard marker but overall she was great!!
Tests are easy and there are only two big assignments (one at midterm and one final). Dr. Evans always tries her best to engage with students even though the material is very dry. The course was definitely a bit more bearable with her!
It is clear she cares about her students. She makes jokes and ends class early usually. I wish she would explain the assignments more but she is always happy to meet for office hours and explain things in detail. Overall the class was easier than I expected it to be.
Dr. Evans is a great professor, who made an 8am mandatory class enjoyable. Her lectures are light and interesting, and she is very approachable and always willing to help.
highly recommend her!!!!!! i loved her lectures and she made sociology very interesting. the work wasn't hard at all and she was my favourite prof this semester. i will say, if i ever missed her lecture i was very lost and didn't do well in the quizzes. i also never did any textbook readings and did really good in the class.
She is a great professor. She cares about students and is always available to give feedback and ideas. Great experience!
Jessica was very nice and her class was pretty easy but due to the content of the lecture, the class was very boring.
Good grader and gave decent feedback. She's nice and is pretty real with us, uses relevant examples to make the material more understanding just make sure read the lecture slides.
Porfessor Evans is a great prof! You definitely have to attend the lectures, as she takes attendance (it's mandatory for the participation marks). Other than that there aren't real exams, just projects and quizzes, which are fairly easy as long as you go through her slides. She also gives students extensions often, which is a plus!
Best prof I've had so far, favourite course too.
Professor Evans truly cares about her students and made this mandatory requirement much more bearable. She provided excellent feedback and even gave us a presentation about grad school at the end of the course.
This teacher is incredible, always gave amazing lectures on stuff I didn't even know I'd care about. Makes it relatable and is a lenient chill person. She is quite young making it easier to connect, and overall makes classes fun. The final project is quite enjoyable as it is a film analysis and video format is accepted. 100/10, choose now
Amazing prof. I loved the lectures and everything was easy to follow a long. Definitely a chill professor who wants her students to be comfortable. Only two workshops that were mandatory for participation marks but I suggest going to lectures as it helps with quizzes.
This class was an 8am with very dry and long lectures, but this prof really gave it her all. Bought both textbooks but mostly used the PEP textbooks, only used the SEL textbook for 3 chapters. Assignments were creative and had a lot of freedom to it. The final was a paper which forced me to learn about a topic in a diff pov. Attend class for quiz.
There are weekly quizzes made by the prof so attending lectures are mandatory. Tutorial attendance is also counted for marks so show up. She usually takes up the weekly quizzes during the 1H tutorial. Midterm was an essay about given topics. Final was also an essay, you had to watch a movie and apply the concepts learned in class.
Prof. Evans is incredible - my absolute favorite lecture at Ryerson's. I rarely attend electives, but she is so well-spoken, captivating the entire class. The online tests were simple, with the content embedded in the course. As for assignments, she is a clear with instructions and her feedback reflects that. Take the class!
As always, she is excellent at teaching & makes it easy to pay attention in class. She is very passionate about the topic. Despite highly disliking writing papers, I took another course with her, which says a lot. There is a 5-page & a 10-page essay (I wish one could be an alternative like an exam). Overall, she is super sweet & a great prof.
I have taken a few courses with Professor Evans; she is one of my favourite teachers. She is very reasonable, cares about her students, and is very accommodating. If you attend all of her lectures and tutorials, then you are basically guaranteed an excellent mark. She is very down to earth and wants all her students to succeed.
Dr Jessica Evans is one of the best profs i've had in my four years here. She's caring, teaches well, keeps you engaged, and is inspiring. There's a couple quizzes but if you come to class regularly, it wont be hard for you. there were a couple papers, but they were interesting to write about. Overall, if you're thinking of taking her, you should.
Honestly one of the best professors I've ever had here in TMU, she is one of the few professors that genuinely cares about her students. Shes open to meeting you, doesnt make a fuss if you ask questions she already answered in class. I recommend her to everyone!
AMAZING PROF! Highly recommend for the seminar course! She is so nice and wants all of her students to do well! Her feedback is excellent and helps you do well! She also provides extra support and help if needed! Very accessible and I really enjoyed her seminar!
Class was fine. Very average. Material was very repetitive and boring.
Though Professor Evans was definitely interesting and made the class content (which was repetitive), fun to learn, her grading was a pain. She marked the essays and group projects easily but was so harsh with the reading reflections, which she claimed were free marks. She was upset people submitted them at the end of the course, which isn't valid!
great professor. very interesting content and loved the readings. great the people complaining didn't feel like actually working in a university course lmao. if you try you will do well.
One of the best profs in the Department of criminology
love this prof so much. Genuinely a talented lecturer, very smart, very down to earth, very reasonable and accommodating. assigns reasonable workload considering this is higher education (its not meant to be high school level folks), gives good feedback, very fair overall. 10/10
I took CRM515 as an upper liberal. Jessica Evans is an amazing prof. Attendance is not necessary but the lectures are actually interesting if you go. She's super chill and accommodating. Fair with marking. There are 4 quizzes (online), 2 workshops (in person), and a final paper. Super easy upper liberal.
Interesting lectures and a very caring professor. She's always open to questions and engages with her students. This course consisted of two essays and two portions of group work, each worth 10%. There were a couple online quizzes but no exam!
I thought Dr. Evans was very knowledgable about the material, nice and considerate, and genuinely took the time during office hours to discuss research paper. Attendance is a must. I am giving her an ok rating, however, as I found her marking for the papers to be pretty confusing despite me going almost every week to her office hours for feedback.
Currently have Dr. Evans. Very knowledgeable while also remaining humble. This creates a very safe space as she values her students perspectives. Interesting content and does not just read off the slides. She actually engages the class. The content is also in depth and clearly well thought out. One of the best profs I have had.
Dr. Evans is a caring and understanding instructor. She evaluates students based on 4 quizzes, a literature review, 2 pass-fail workshops, and a final essay, marking generously. She's supportive of personal issues and listens to students. Her lectures are quick, enjoyable, and rarely last the full 3 hours, so don't listen to negative reviews.
A very insightful class that I'd recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about feminist criminology. The assignments were a bit confusing because of the minimal instructions, but Professor Evans was always willing to clarify/hold office hours.
She is a very informed and thoughtful prof and cares a lot about the topics taught. I did find the lectures slow at times however the topics themselves are important and interesting. You only need to attend classes with workshops which is an easy 20% of your grade. Quizzes through the course are also easy opportunities for strong grades.
