Very nice and helpful for the most part but trying to make up tests and labs can be difficult. She is a nice person though and worthwhile. Not impossible to get an A in the class.
Great teacher! always goes around to help! Quizzes can be tough, but that's the way it should be right?! So study hard, but if you need help, ask her and she'll definitly help you!
Awesome teacher. Really easy. There are 7 Labs that are done in class. 4 Homework assignments. 5 Quizzes 1 Midterm and a final, all of which are really easy. She informs you of your grade. Pretty easy to get an A. 85%-100% is an A, 75%-85% is a B, and so on. Really cool teacher. Take her if you can.
had her spring 2006. really nice. was very clear in her teaching and what she wanted from us. gave adequate time to do assignments. very approachable. likes people to stay the entire class, even if your group has finished. final was kind of hard, definitely take time to study and know the material well.
An average class. Be in class, every class and you'll pass with flying colors.
Lots of material and she goes through it very quickly. If you can stop writing notes for a second to actually listen to what she's saying it is very interesting. Professor is nice and helpful when questions are asked, and I would overall recommend the class.
She's likable. She knows what she's talking about. If you need help with the lab work or have any questions about astronomy, she'll be glad to help you. Very helpful teacher. This class is worth taking with her.
Pretty easy class. 2 mid-terms 45 multiple choice questions and a Final. Homwork is kind of hard sometimes but she gives you plenty of time to do it. She offers alot of help in her office hours. She sometimes goes by the lectures fast, but if you tell her to slow down she'll slow down. If your not intrested in the subject you might get bored.
I enjoyed this class, there are a lot of notes, which are helpful on the mid terms, homework is easy, and extra credit really helps so make sure to do it!
She is very helpful in her office hours. She is very passionate about her work and it shows. She makes the material as interesting as possible with cool pictures and stuff. Midterms are all pretty easy if you take good notes, and she gives plenty of time to do homework assignments. Definitely recommend this class
Very good teacher
She is easy enough but her material is EXTREMELY Dry... manages to make astronomy uninteresting... She's a physcist not an astronomer. Class is mandatory due to random attendance... you never use the book. ALL SHE DOES IS READ OFF HER POWER POINT. Only freshman like her because they can't recognize a bad prof when they see one.
Lectures are kinda dry, but interesting topic. Good teacher but lecture could've been more interesting. Class mostly consists of notes, hw, and tests. Take GOOD notes and do the homework and the midterms will be easy. Its getting to class that's the hard part because she literally talks the whole time
Very good teacher. Really likes astronomy. You can get the info from the book, but I recommend going to class anyways. She's fun.
Very good teacher. I like the way she explains the topic. It is nice to listen to her. If you pay attention you will learn useful stuff. Just take good notes, do all the homework and try your best on the tests. definitely recommend this class and teacher.
Good teacher. Made astronomy easy for me to understand. Bring your lecture tutorial book to class. She periodically checks attendance by doing in class questions that you turn in.
This class was super easy. No papers. all tests were multiple choice, homework is easy, you can google the answers or just go to her office. Her lectures are all presented very clearly on powerpoint. you don't even have to listen to her talk if you don't want to]. she knows what she's talking about, probably a huge astronomy nerd. i liked her
I have always had a hard time understanding Science, Until i took this class. Her lectures on the subject are extremely interesting, but... you have to like astronomy, other wise its a sleepfest lecture. gives plenty of time to do the homework, test are challenging, but if you do all the Homework, and read the book and her notes, its a breez.
The most passionate teacher I have ever encountered. She LOVES astronomy and is ALWAYS willing to help. Not too demanding and homework once every week or two. Do the study guides for the tests and you will definitely pass. Plus, her grading system isn't too bad either! 60% is a C!!! Definitely recommend.
I agree with everything positive said about the work, but I Fielder's lecture style didn't work for me. She does have students work in groups, which is a nice breakup, but her power points were very simplified, and her explanation of the material didn't go far beyond them.
I hated going to class, not bc she was mean or anything, just because IT WAS SO BORING! 3 exams, no papers, hmwk wkst due every week, randomly takes attendance and one big final. I got a B, attended almost every class, bombed the 1st 2 midterms and id okay on the final and last exam. She's nice and helpful during office hours, but super boringgggg!
I thought she did a great job of engaging the class in the subject... group work seems like it was very useful to students who were having trouble with the material, Fielder did a good job of making people use logic to figure out problems. I also liked that she made some stabs at the awesome, ineffable qualities of astronomy!
She roams up and down the lecture room to ask if we need help; for me, individual help during class time... C'MON!How great! She post her lecture slides up and it's easy to keep up with her.
Fielder is amazing! She is so knowledgeable and is very passionate about the subject and it shows in her teaching. You have 8homework assign. throughout the semester, and about 3 tests (two midterms, and a final) all multiple choice. All her notes are online. She is very clear, and more than willing to help, during class or at her office hours.
For those who are interested in the material, this is an excellent class. For someone who does not particularly care about the subject matter, it can be boring and tedious. After the first month or so, the lectures start becoming long and fast paced. She will literally start talking at 11:00 and not pause until 12:25. Very passionate teacher indeed
2 midterms, 1 final, and 8 homework assignments.Grades are curved so it's easy to get a B.Randomly takes attendance by you turning the answer to the question she puts up.Really helpful at all times. Knows what she's talking about. Didn't need the book at all if you attend her classes regularly.Lectures are interesting if you're into the subject.
Took her lab the same time as lecture. Lab was MUCH easier. Quizzes every week, 3 homework assignments, and the final was only about 20 questions at most. Try to stay there for a reasonable amount of time because she remembers people's name and knows if you cut. She gives you the answers to the quizzes but no the lab.
I took her for a 3 hour night class, which she kept us in until the last minute. There are participation points for each class, homeworks due every 2 weeks, but if you go to her office hours she WILL help you. GO SEE HER it will help you understand the material. You can also print out lecture slides for each class and then fill them in during class
3 multiple choice exams. I didn't do so great on them yet I managed to get a B. Do the homework, it helps, i guess. The lecture tutorials she does in class along with the voting card are pointless. She never gives the correct answer in the end. Can tell she's very passionate about the topic, but she sure can put you to sleep
Very passionate about the subject. Knows what she's talking about and is very helpful to students. She cares and tries her best to make sure everyone is on the same page. Use her office hours to talk to her if you need help & she will tutor you one on one if necessary.
Fielder understands astronomy so well that she has a hard time conveying the "simple" concepts to us mere mortals. Went through 40 powerpoint slides in one class, which was 4 chapters. Didn't understand anything on the midterms or final, i passed with a B- because i did the homework. Don't take this class, it's not fun..at all.
Attend class at least one day a week, look over the slides online and this class is super easy. Fielder is an awesome teacher explains everything very well. Take her class.
this class is not easy. you have to put a LOT of work into it and the class is boring. no one in my class enjoyed the class. jessica has an attitude if you dont understand something and shes sarcastic. shes helpful i guess. bad class
I like her a lot. She's really nice and will answer all questions you have about Astronomy. If you have a more in depth question she's always happy to enlighten you with her knowledge. She doesn't use the book that much, just for reference and extra practice. She gives hw, 3 test (lowest score dropped) and final exam. Just do all the work and pass.
Awesome teacher! She kept me interested the entire class. Very passionate about the subject and it shows. Loves when you answer questions because she loves to talk about astronomy. If you need help, she is more than welcome to assist you. I loved having her. Such a great teacher!
She is amazing! Could not have gotten a better teacher for this class. Shows passion everyday and is more than willing to help you. She tells you exactly what is on her test and goes over everything. I love this teacher!!!
Night class with her is so dreadful! She is super enthusiastic about astronomy and you can learn tons from her. Very helpful but who really wants to hear about astronomy at 7 at night? If you do, then take this class!
GREAT teacher. Very interesting class and interesting lectures. Homework is online and very helpful since it is mostly visual. Used no formulas/math in the class and she uses very good examples and visuals in her powerpoints. I highly recommend this professor. Always available for help during and after class and office hours.
Absolutely LOVED Fielder. She made everything so clear, which made doing well in the class very easy. Attendance is mandatory but she is so engaging one doesn't even mind going. Love her goofiness as well.
Professor Fielder is so nice. Her lectures can be pretty boring and I don't particularly like the material, but she is extremely helpful and if you approach her during office hours she will help you with anything. There are also a lot of extra credit opportunities--if you feel like you might fail, do them. They add up.
The lecture class is sooo boring! Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does random participation questions every so often. She is very helpful when you have questions but the material is just very dry!
Homework is online, 3 midterms(drops lowest), 1 final. I never went to lecture so can't comment about that. But you do have to go to class because she has a participation grade. She gives extra credit. I would not recommend her for people who do not go to class or people who want an easy grade. Meh, better than most I guess
Jessica is a great teacher! she is very passionate and does a very good job simplifying everything for for us to comprehend easily. Hw is online. Class is mainly lectures but we sometime do lecture tutorial(workbook) for 5-10min w/ group. She say you have to read text but she'll just go over it in lecture. put in bit of time to study and you'l pass
Great professor, really nice and cheerful. Showed amazing demos in her class. her way of teaching physics was really helpful.
I took Jessica's Astron 3L course at SRJC. She is a wonderful, smart teacher who really knows her astronomy! I'd recommend taking her. I had an easy time getting an "A" in this class!
She's so passionate about what she teaches! I'm so grateful to have had her as a professor. Her class is pretty well structured, puts lecture slides online. Hw is online too. 3 midterms, 1 final. Readings aren't mandatory. Her class is really easy. She also has many extra credit opportunities.
I hate science but this class was not too painful! The grade is: three midterms(she drops the lowest grade), online homework and a final. Attendance is taken not often and lectures are posted online. She is really clear at explaining topics and super helpful.
Good class, she doesn't take attendance often and posts the power-points online. Homework is due only once a week. She is a good lecturer and the grade consists of: two midterms, online homework, attendance and a the final.
Homework due once a week. You can tell she's really interested in the course. All powerpoints are posted online, there were 3 midterms total. If you don't attend class and pay attention during lecture, you will be completely lost. And she WILL NOT review for midterms or the final. Doing the homework before lecture will actually help you too
Her Physics 101 class is actually really helpful. Homework's due once a week but she's willing to do extensions if you need it. She really loves what she teaches, and she breaks it down to terms that are easy to understand.Great teacher!
She is a great teacher. She makes physics interesting and easy to understand. Would highly recommend to take. You use the book a lot and is necessary. Online hw due every week but is easy to do and straight from the book. Make sure to keep up with the chapter readings. Easy midterms and final. Gives participation points. Very willing to help !
Really nice professor and knows how to teach. I barely pay in attention in classes but something about her lectures I stayed awake. Her exams don't really go into specifics (overstudied the first midterm i remember), so they're quite easy. Drops lowest out of 3 midterms. Overall, great class and professor. Easy A!
The class was very easy if you read the assigned pages. Ms. Fielder is very nice and passionate about the subject, and she's really good at helping during office hours.
She is one of the best teachers I have had here at state. She is extremely passionate about the class and clearly loves teaching. During lectures she would engage us with questions that we would answer with a card and we had lecture tutorials to do as well. Hw was only once a week and it's fairly easy. I would definitely take another class with her
Very inspiring and interesting teacher! Jessica is willing to help out with any issues. Very long class, but it is also extremely interesting.
Very nice lady, but wasn't the greatest at conveying Physics principles in a way someone who hadn't taken Physics in a while/at all could easily understand. However, she is very willing to help you out if you ask. Make sure to do all the homework. Reading the textbook really helps.
She is the nicest teacher ever. Her lectures are never boring, and sometimes we get to see videos of stars and other astronomy things. Most of the homework are online and they are super easy. Also you are required to read, but I didn't really read. However, her lectures are super helpful especially for midterms. Just listen in class and you'll pass
Not a big fan of her teaching style. She doesn't like to do examples in class and lectures are a couple chapters ahead of the homework assigned. I was able to learn a lot more from my lab instructor then her. If you have an option to take another professor for physics 101, do it!
This teacher is not so good, hard to understand. I don't recommend to take her class
Bad teacher I ever had, online comment is not real. She is not a good teacher, and hard to get A
No the good teacher, and hard to get good grade, choose the other teacher than her.
I took this class my first semester of college and I had no background on physics at all. The material was easy to understand through her lectures, so skipping class although tempting can affect the way you perform on the tests. Overall she was a great teacher and as long as you attend class and keep up with the readings its an easy pass.
Real straightforward instructor. Everything in the lecture and online homework will be on the exam. I slacked off in every lecture but came out with a B because I understood the concepts form the homework and lecture notes. Don't buy the text book, I used it for two weeks and never picked it back up.
I thought this class was going to be easy due to the reviews, but I was wrong. No point in getting the lecture tutorials, just share with someone who already has it, because you won't have to turn it in. Homework once a week, three midterms, and a final. Just get a good grade on the homework and manage a C on the tests, and you'll be fine.
Very helpful, very responsive to e-mails and questions during class. Online homework can be a tad tricky, but straightforward overall and your best guide to the material that is being covered. She also drops one of the exams which helps. You should not have any problems getting a A~B if you review the text/class notes/online homework often.
Very helpful, very responsive with e-mail and questions during class. The online HW will be your best guide to the material (and the exams), so take the time to do it well; it also contains a review section with additional questions from the textbook which I found quite helpful--take advantage of it.
One of the clearest lecturers I've had. When ever I had questions she would explain until i understood. I would recommend you take her class.
She is very clear during her lectures. This is an interesting class, there is homework once every week, and tests are difficult. Overall, I enjoyed this class and she is VERY HELPFUL with answering any questions over email, during class, and in office hours.
One of the best professors I've had. She explains everything well and always does into detail, you can tell she loves the subject. She puts her powerpoints online but you still need to go to class. You take 3 tests and the lowest score is dropped. Homework is on the pearson website, and ALL of the answers are online, so just google them
She is a very nice teacher. She has 3 exams, one final and online homework . It is a very interesting class
Jessica Fielder is super excited about physics. She uses PowerPoint presentations and she puts the slides online which makes studying for the exams a breeze.
Really good teacher. Friendly and very clear in her instruction and expectations. Go to class, because she sometimes does little participation activities. And bring your Lecture Tutorial book! Study for the exams, they're hard. Weekly homework online isn't too difficult, just set a reminder or something to make sure you do it.
Prof. Fielder got me really interested in Astronomy. There's class exercises, so it made the time go by fast. There's weekly homework online, 3 midterms, and a final. Her lectures are engaging and she's very nice. Offers extra credit too!
The class is pretty intriguing. However, it can get a little boring because her lectures are pretty long. Not only that, but it's deceiving because you feel like you've learned a lot, but the tests are very difficult. Put a lot in effort into studying and you will be okay on the exams. Homework is pretty easy, all online.
3 MC Midterms (lowest score dropped) and a final. NO papers, presentations, group projects! You hardly need the book - everything is in the lecture - but you definitely need the online code for homework. You have to study to get an A but it's doable and she's really helpful during office hours. She's a great presenter, really interesting!
She is not very helpful when you ask questions after class ( seems too busy). Also this class was very boring! Homework is tough! If you want to work hard for a boring mediocre class, where you barely pass then sign up. Otherwise do not take this class!
I do not like her. She is so hard. The homework are tough.
Likeable as a person-but the class is pretty difficult. I thought this class would be more interactive and engaging but it wasn't. The power points and homework are unrelated to each other and also to the tests so that sucks-ALOT. You have to pay a bunch of money for a book you wont need to use. You HAVE to show up and participate as well.
Very clear and straightforward. Incredibly nice professor. The class was easy to follow and her powerpoints helped a lot. Go to class, do the work, and you'll pass. Not a super easy class but not too difficult either.
This professor was one of the best one's I've had at SFSU. I am terrible at science, but she is great at explaining the material so this wasn't an issue for me in this course. If you want to pass: Do all the homework and go to class to pay attention. She collects participation randomly once a week. I passed without the textbook, she expains better.
Very nice woman who wants you to do well. My only complaint is she wouldn't bump up my 89.7ish to an A, but other than that she was amazing. I'm terrible at science and was still able to do well in her class due to her great power points and visuals.
She is one of the kindest teachers I have had so far in my college career. There are homework's and multiple choice tests, but they are not hard if you decently study the slides and textbook. This class is very interesting because you get to learn in depth about the universe.
interesting and clear. Most Examples taught in class were more challenging than exam problems. Do the sample problems in the book because they do show up in the written portion of the exam. Physics for me was tough, but with lots of practice it became doable. Fielder sticks to her syllabus so if you're aiming for an A-, better get a 90 percent.
Very nice lady and great teacher! I only had her for half the semester since she went on maternity leave. Overall I recommend her, the class isn't extremely hard.
Took professor Fielder in spring 2014. Her lectures were easy to understand and she made astronomy really interesting. If you're looking for a fairly easy GE take her! Her tests come directly from the class activities and lectures so go to class and pay attention
Mrs. Fielder was a very good teacher. If you aren't into science that much, it's okay because she understands that not everyone is an astronomy major. She drops your lowest score on one of the three mid-terms, which can really boost your grade if you had a bad score. She also gives many extra credit opportunities. Very nice lady as well.
Fielder is who inspired me to pursue Astrophysics. A true gem of a lecturer and worth taking. You can pull your grade up by 4% with extra credit and she drops your lowest midterm score to help your grade. Office hours are very helpful and she's awesome to talk to.
I hate this class with my whole being. Were asked to buy textbooks and we don't even use them. We do "practice" in our workbooks the last two minutes of class and never goes over the questions. The one time she does, the whole class does a terrible job on them. There is not enough curriculum we do to get a good grade. Do bad on one test SCREWED
The best teacher I have ever had for science! She really loves Astronomy, and is very good at explaining concepts so everyone can understand. She really cares about her students, and is always there for you during office hours. There are 4 pretty easy tests, and she drops your worst score. Just study the concepts and you'll pass with flying colors!
She's so enthusiastic, dorky, and witty. Definitely worth being there. I could listen to her talk forever. She's good at time management and never goes off track. She makes things much easier to understand is very organized and structured.
If you're bad at science, don't take this class. Although she's a good professor, there's not much you can do to raise your grade besides participation, online hw and midterms. She doesn't give much solution to your confusion or struggle with the work besides emailing her your questions, which was really frustrating.
Fantastic professor, one of the best. She explains everything with enthusiasm and detail. You can tell how passionate she is for astronomy. Pay attention in class and do the readings and this class will be an easy A.
She's one of the nicest professors I've ever met. Says "banana-pants" a few times, and it's incredible every time she says it. She takes roll on Fridays with little questions that you have to answer on a piece of paper and turn in at the end of class. You can certainly tell how much she loves astronomy. Don't forget to do the online homework.
jessica is an amazing professor. as long as you actually read the material and pay attention in class you should be fine. tests are fairly difficult but doable. homework is due every friday and takes about a half hour to do. her lectures are astounding and she is truly caring. if you want an easy A this class will be difficult.
She is so enthusiastic about Astronomy that it's almost contagious! She is good at engaging her class that no one ever talks over her but just listens bc she makes science fun. She is able to explain complex astronomy and physics material and break it down to something easy & weirdly: makes it seem like the best thing you have/will ever learn.
Takes her time to help her students understand the topic. She would answer any questions we had and offered many extra credit opportunities. She seems to love Astronomy so much that it makes you like it too. Her lectures are very interesting.
She's the geeky type of teacher. Geeky in a good way! She's extremely passionate about astronomy. Her grading is designed so you don't fail. 60% is a C-! Her class is based off of participation points, online homework due every friday, 3 midterms but drops the lowest score, and a final. Easy class to pass, but not so easy to get an A.
She is just wonderful. She's very passionate about what she does. I was in a combined lecture, so we had 100+ students. It's a really great intro to astronomy class, the homework is online and the only tests are the midterm (3 total, lowest of 3 dropped) and the final. As long as you follow along with the lectures, it's a really easy class.
I took this as a general ed and was not looking for something too terrible difficult. Professor Fielder is a great professor and I would suggest that you take this class if you are looking for a general ed requirement. As long as you come to class you will pass the class. 10/10 definitely recommend!
Jessica is a wonder professor who has a deep understanding about Astronomy. Be prepared to listen to her lectures because she provides a lot of information. You will need to purchase an access code for your weekly online homework. You will also take three midterms but Jessica drops the lowest midterm grade.
If you want to take astro for GE credit, do yourself a favor and take it with Jessica. She's super passionate about astro and accessible outside of class. She takes participation once a week on a random day but you can make up for it with extra credit. 3 midterms and 1 final, she drops your lowest midterm grade. Also, the textbook is free!
Amazing, charismatic professor, encourages curiosity. I didn't even need to read the textbook to know what she was talking about b/c she explains so well. Tries to answer questions, HW is pretty easy, can be found online too. Slides and demos avail outside of class. Gives extra credit, walks around during 'classwork time' to help individuals.
Easy A. Takes attendance random days once a week. Online weekly hw (quizlet). 3 midterms (drops lowest) and final. Extra credit opportunities. Honestly study her handouts, hw assignments and do study area from online hw website and you'll get A's on the tests. Super easy and she's a fun and quirky teacher.
Incredible class. Jessica was so excited to be teaching. I don't like science at all but she made me love it. Just do the homework and study for the tests and you'll be fine. The final was pretty hard but she drops your worst midterm grade. Her grading scale is adjusted too, 85% and higher is an A.
Jessica is such a great astronomy teacher! She is really passionate about what she is teaching and very willing to help students. It's an easy class if you pay attention to the notes for the tests and do the homework (once a week online).
I've always had an interest in astronomy, but my true passion for it wasn't revealed until I took ASTR 115 with Professor Fielder in my first semester at SF State. Her patience and kindness makes her class an open space free of judgement, which makes it easy to ask questions, and her passion for astronomy makes every day interesting.
If you're like me, you love taking courses with passionate professors like Fielder. I took her my first semester at state and she was the sweetest thing. She makes her lectures so interesting and it's clear she cares about what she's talking about. She makes astro easy to learn and is always so open to helping out students. Definitely recommend!
Prof Fielder is really sweet. Curves grades. Does everything possible so that you can get as many points as you can. Gives partial credit opportunities for multiple choice exams. Homework is fairly easy. Exams are hard, but study notes and hw probs. Don't miss class, takes attendance thru notecards. Gives EC opportunities.
Jessica is very nice. She cares about the students so she is easily approachable. If you ask her questions she will give you a clear answer, there is homework every week and she takes attendance by making us submit an index card with a question of the day. Overall she is pretty amazing, I am really happy I took this class with her.
Jessica focuses on conceptual understanding when it comes to physics. She tries to make the material connect with the students and has no problem re-explaining things. She's very sweet and passionate about physics. She's a great teacher to take if you want to focus on learning physics, but also enjoying it.
Attendance is taken at random once a week through participation worksheets. If you do the homework you'll probably pass the test. Go to class/ watch the lectures online in order to actually learn the material. She does review sessions before exams. There are 4 in total but the lowest one is dropped. She explains things very well and at a slow pace.
Absolutely amazing and caring professor.
she is by far the most amazing physics teacher I've had. She is caring and helpful and understands the students. She takes participation once a week. 2 midterms and 1 final with options of extra credit midterms which ONLY adds to your grade! easy A class if you study for it enough.
She writes all of her own homework and test questions so that is definitely something to consider if you know what I mean. She is really nice but I feel like the tests were unnecessarily hard sometimes. She took participation once per week on a random day in class and then through Gradescope once we switched to online.
jessica is one of the sweetest professors i've had so far. she really focuses on making sure students understand and i love her passion for physics. it makes learning a lot easier. her midterms were hard but she drops the lowest score. she does participation but it's easy points. overall, i really enjoyed her class.
She is such a gem. She explains things so easily and truly wants you to succeed. Her exams are not too hard, I found the homework to be a little tougher. The way she teaches physics though makes it so easy to understand. I would not even fret about her class and she will help you with anything you need. Super chill:)
