if you want to memorize the textbook take this class. She expects alot. I do not recommend her at all.
Such a HARD teacher!!!! Makes you take timed quizzes before every class with complex questions before she's even reviewed the chapter with you. 5 exams in this class. Very strict, made me feel likei was in high school again. I dropped her class and switched to stress management..I'll let that speak for its self. $90 for text book $45 for clicker.
VERY HARD CLASS! Quiz before every class, 2 projects and 5 HARD Tests.Expects you to know the material BEFORE class. She picks favorites. She answers your question by asking you a question, which doesn't help. I have not missed one class and still have a bad grade. I wouldn't recomend taking this class by her.
Really Hard class! way too much reading, she expects you to pretty much memorize the textbook. I've always liked psychology but this class made me hate it.
This class was WAY too much work for a general psychology course. the reading is somewhere around 60 pages a class period, the book cost 100 dollars, clicker 45 dollars and she doesn't even know how to use the clickers. the rules changed every class period! There's no consistancy and way to much work. I could be a psychologist now though. :(
dont take her! ive attended all the classes and done the work and still not doing good. She doesnt explain things and expects way to much!! I liked the subject before taking this class.
She is very understanding and willing to help you in anyway she can! At first we had a lot of reading quizzes but when brought to her attention she cut it back so we had less work. She is clear with her instructions and as long as you do your reading and attend class you will pass with an A+ I highly recommend her!
This was her first semester at UVU, and at first it was really rough, but she's been working really hard to make the class better and she raised everyones grades! She's a good lady, take this class.
She tries her best to make the class fair and easy. She wants you to succeed in her class. She's really nice, and the class is really interactive. She's kinda like a high school teacher when it comes to having your cell phone out...she will call you out.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES. I can not stress this enough. I am a senior this year and of all the many teachers I have had, see is by far the WORST. I took cognitive psychology and was a TA for her class and both were miserable. She requires so much out of you. I spent at least two hours a night working on her class alone. Very condescending!
As everyone has said Dr. Hill's class is challenging, but you can learn a LOT. She is VERY nice and willing to help you if you only ask. I really enjoy her unique teaching styles. She is always looking for new ways to engage students in their learning. Not easy class but rewarding and you will learn a lot if you attend class and do the homework.
I am a junior and this is by far the HARDEST class I have taken. The tests are ridiculously hard and she expects you to read and study for an abnormally huge amount of time in my opinion. If this is the only class you're taking you have a chance, but if you've got a full course load (most of us do), don't expect to do really well.
Dr.Hill's was very helpful, especially when it came to the test. She's really smart in her smart. She had us do the Learning Objectives which helped. Most of her tests are multiple choice questions. The test are mostly base on her lectures. She very easy and doesn't take attendants.I love this Professor. I would recommend anyone to take her class!
Dr. Hill knows her stuff, but her class is the least organized and most confusing class I've taken so far. She posts a million things canvas, some needed, some not, her grading scale favors those that have time to work in groups, and the way she writes her questions for her tests are ridiculously confusing. she teaches well, but class is horrible
Amazing. Dr. hill wants her students to really understand the concepts and integrate them. i have learned more form Dr. Hill than any other professor. She is great at delivering the information and has class involvement
I hated this class and professor. I showed up to every single class, took lots of notes, and did very well on the mindtap assignments yet myself and another student were pulled aside and scolded for not talking at length with our groups. She posts way too much pointless stuff on canvas and is very scatterbrained. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I did not like her ways of teaching at all. She only reads slides and that is her lecture. She is not clear whatsoever. Very helpful before and at beginning of class, but that wears off quickly. She "gets sick" often. I would try to avoid her as a professor. THE ONE GOOD THING: She does let you take group tests after you take the individual test.
She was definitely one of the best teachers I have had, and her classes were always entertaining
Dr. Hill is an amazing professor. Seriously one of the best I have ever had. To get a good grade in her class you need to read the texts, attend and participate in class, and communicate with her if you have any issues. She is passionate, she knows her stuff and goes out of her way to help you really learn the material.
Dr. Hill was awesome! She is willing to work with you if you ever need help. She is knowledgeable in her field and her lectures are clear and to the point. Reading the material is essential to passing the class, but overall a great class and an awesome teacher.
Dr. Hill strives to create a safe atmosphere where students engage and comment freely, however, if you don't answer quickly enough she puts you on the spot and is condescending. Her expectations are NEVER clear on assignments, and she will change the exams and final without giving you prior notice. If you can avoid this class - DO NOT TAKE IT!!!
Lectures are interesting and class time is fun, until you have to take exams. She loves to test you a lot. At beginning of semester we were told one test score would be dropped making it no final. She emailed everyone at 10pm the night before final and said we had to show up and it would count towards our grade. Daily quizzes, lots of homework.
Dr. Hill is intelligent, knowledgeable, funny, and most of all, caring. She truly cares for her students and their success. She did everything she could to support me through this challenging class and help me become a better student teacher. She took the time to give me detailed feedback and individual attention. I would highly recommend Dr. Hill.
Dr. Hill is a great professor! She has very clear grading criteria and prepares you very well for the tests. She gives quite a bit of homework, but if you go to class and stay on top of it, you will pass the class. She is hard but it is so worth it! You learn so much about the world around you. And a little difficulty never hurt anyone.
Dr. Hill is a good professor but be prepared for hours upon hours of homework. The lectures are mandatory and they're not very helpful. You do get to use your notes on all tests including the final so take good notes!
She is a true professional. Best class and instructor I have attended with at UVU. Dr, Hill is an admirable instructor the kind you are proud to sit under and learn from. The material is not that hard some people think it is but I like it. She is the kind of instructor other instructors should look up too.
Dr. Hill is a good teacher, but seriously prepare for homework. With reading and then InQuizitive, which is not helpful at all, she will also assign unit assignments that have unclear directions. Class time is enjoyable, but I am not sure the workload should correlate with a 1010 class. Not worth it.
Dr. Hill was the hardest professor ever. Expect homework EVERY night. Hard quizzes and tests. Class is mandatory which is so hard because sometimes things come up in life and you can't attend. I would not recommend taking her class,
Not a very harsh grader, but gives a fairly big workload. Expect to take 2 quizzes, read a chapter, meet with TA for required session, and one homework assignment per week. If you put in the effort an A isn't hard to obtain, but will take up a bit of time.
20 to 40 hrs min every wk homwrk S/b two 4 credit classes EVERY WEEK Read 1 ch psy 1010 text, write ALL concepts AND definitions 3 to 5 ch other readings 1 paper synthesizing guest profs / all reading SEMESTER 2 observations of profs / write Teach ethics 2 x Teach other class 2 x Review cohorts presentations
Good part is that she has 95% guest lecturers. Most of the guest profs are really good. Minimum of 4 chapters reading and 2 written papers each week, then adds student lectures to the rest. It takes at least 25 hours to complete all assignments each week. Not there if you need help. Half of students dropped the class by the 3rd week. No tests
If you can find ANY other professor to take this course with please do! Safe yourself the time and energy with Dr Hill. Her homework, tests and quizzes are hard, not to mention the time she wants you to set aside for her class only is ridiculous.
Avoid this class if you can! She is a good person and very smart but her teaching skills are beyond what 1010 psychology class is ready for. If you make an appointment with her to talk to her about a certain circumstance be ready for her to point out all the things that she put syllabus! She is not flexible with students at all very strict.
There was an insane amount of homework for this course. I had to schedule my life around this class. We also did this thing called breakout sessions, where her teachers assistants would teach us on Fridays. It wasn't horrible, but I would prefer to be taught by my professor. Way more difficult than it needed to be.
Jessica Hill wants to be the sage on the stage. She is an mediocre lecturer. The amount of assignments are ridiculous for a 1010 class. If you ask for help she will tell you to make shortcuts. You will fail the class if you take the shortcuts she recommends. She uses psych to manipulate others. Changed my major from psych because of her.
Dr. Hill might possibly be the worst professor/teacher I've ever had. She doesn't care about you in the slightest or your needs. She has a HORRIBLE attitude and is a grumpy person. Class wise.. There is a ridiculous amount of assignments and work for a 1010 class. I am considering switching my major because how horrible she made psychology for me!
The best part of this class was the breakout sessions on Friday. The beginning of the semester is extremely confusing. It's very difficult to know what to be doing. There is a lot of interesting information, but it is presented in an uninteresting way that makes learning difficult. There is also a lot of meaningless group work.
This is a TOUGH class. I had more work in this class than all my other classes combined. If you get behind you will fail. 4 Exams (plus a cumulative final), 4 big projects, a weekly reading quiz from inquisitive (literally the worst), and I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty more. GO TO CLASS, especially breakout sessions. They're worth a lot of points.
She is the worst professor I've ever had. For a 1010 class it was the hardest and most time consuming class I'd ever taken. To get an A it would need to be your only class and no job. I was thinking about going into psychology, this made me hate psychology. She should not be teaching. Bad attitude, not helpful, if you want to pass don't take her.
This was one of the WORST classes I've taken at UVU. The first section focused on how to study and how to make a schedule for your life, which was totally irrelevant, difficult, and intrusive. The material was fine but I felt like most of what she focused on teaching was completely irrelevant. Terrible Terrible class.
Pretty easy class I thought. The exams were a little tough but not too bad. Never any homework but reading. Just show up and study a bit and you'll be fine.
Although there is a lot of work that comes with this class, Coach Hill is awesome! She makes the lectures interesting.
This class is extremely easy, anyone that says otherwise just did not show up to class. The exams have complex questions, but using your best judgement you will do fine. The exams are open book, the final is not open book, but is similar. I studied maybe one hour for each exam and did very well, to save studying time just show up!!!!! It was easy:)
Can't imagine her other higher Psycology classes. This should not have been a 1010 class, way to much time, to many assignments and tests were pretty much created to fail you. She says she cares about you but you can tell she doesn't have the fact that even if you do everything you could fail. This class gave me so much anxiety, take a diffferent 1
Very conceited, makes you go through her TA's with any questions. Very annoying person in general. Learned more from the book than I did from her. Easy class if you show up and do the work. Get lit fam.
This class was online and a lot of busy work. I have taken many other online classes and this class was the most work i have ever done. She tries to be clear with her assignments but it is hard to understand what is expected. She tries to do group projects online but I would rather work alone since it is an online course. All reading type of class.
Dr. Hill really makes you work for your grade. Her class was my hardest. It didn't help that I felt confused the whole time. If you slip up just a little bit you will fall behind. I went to almost all of the classes and it was still hard. DO YOUR READING
Because I made the effort to read and do the assignments, I passed the class without a problem. I heard a lot of students complaining about how much work there was and how hard the class was. It honestly isn't a hard class, you just have to do your part. She doesn't teach literally anything in lectures though, you just go for participation points
Her work load is way more than an entry level course. Makes you do most of the learning on your own. Goes off on rants when there is way too much to cover. Take Psych 1010 from a different professor, you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
If you are looking for a class with only busy work and prefer to learn on your own this is the class for you. I didn't find it helpful that we would just do busy work in the class, leading to the quizzes and tests you feel like it is a different class. Be prepared to learn on your own from the readings. If you have to take it from her, wait a sem.
Dr. Hill actually cares about you, but the class it's self is incredibly difficult. Very disorganized and a lot of assignments that you forget whats due when. She has stated many times that her classes are harder, so that your future classes are easier.
She expects that you'll put 12 hours into her general education course. It isn't worth the amount of time I spent on it. She is much more of a small classroom teacher, but we had a huge class. I could tell she was a micro-manager, because she had a seating chart for 300 plus students.
She is an alright professor, but she doesn't do a lot of lecture, prepare for lots of in class group work. Also tons of quizzes, so be ready for that. Her tests are hard too. Most of the material is learned through the readings, so if you make sure you read, you'll be fine.
If you really want to learn the material, for sure take this class. Dr. Hill knows her stuff. If you have a life other than school, though, you probably don't want to. It was more work and more stress than all of my other classes combined. We had two textbooks to read, three quizzes a week, and an exam or major writing assignment due every 2 weeks.
Due dates constantly change, the way she grades constantly changes. She posted assignments the day before they were due. If you can handle a large amount of chaos then this class is passable. It requires a lot of time, if you dont work well under pressure or disorganization, this is not the class for you. Choose a different professor, just do it.
Gives more than 7 hours worth of homework. Crams you with readings but then lectures on studying and how its bad to get too much information at once. Basically you don't need to attend class because its all online. Makes you answer tons of homework questions and have in done in 2 days. Not considerate that we have other classes.
Passionate about the subject, but wastes class time and expects you to learn literally everything from the textbook. Assigns 2 crazy W2L assignments weekly that take 6+ hours each. On each assignment, only selects 2 questions from approx. 75 to grade. Her TA screwed up my grade SEVERAL times, so watch it closely. Prepare to dedicate lots of time.
Dr. Hill is an excellent and well distinguished faculty member but she exponentially hard and difficult on her students and research team members. Get prepared to work and study because this will likely be one of your most difficult courses you will take at UVU. She is blunt, isn't approachable and is not warm and fuzzy in the slightest.
She will do all she can to help her students. The class is hard, but she fun and engaging. Her goal in lectures is to cover what the book doesn't or to clear up what you don't understand. If easy is what you want, look elsewhere. If you want to understand and master the content, take her class. Trust me, she is very easy to talk to.
I took her class and I learned a lot. There is group work that you'll be doing mostly every day but it's simple and easy. Sometimes I didn't want to do group work, but it definitely helped me succeed in her class. If you study as if you would any other class, I don't see how you couldn't get a good grade in the class. She is really nice and fun
One of the most disorganized and frustrating classes I have ever taken. Because it was a condensed class the workload was substantially more, which I was ok with & aware of. Grading was a mess, she was either incredibly harsh, while her grammar and directions were poor. Or she'd give full credit because she didn't have time to read your paper.
Great teacher who knows her stuff. She will make you understand how to get the most out of your class and how to do it in other courses! She does expect you to do your part and is willing to help you if you are struggling. Worth taking her class to better ourself and know the material!
Worst class I have ever taken from an incredibly pretentious professor. Group work was a requirement every single week. The only thing I learned about from this class was how to edit Wikipedia articles. Ask me about cognitive psychology, I won't be able to to tell you a dang thing!
This class is not one you take just to coast along. This class requires you to put in a decent amount of effort. She's not too harsh of a grader but there is a LOT of homework. Check Canvas EVERY DAY. Originally, there were 5 or 6 exams scheduled but she ended up dropping all but 2. I can't speak for the OER assignment, but the WIKI one was 3/10.
Does not respond to emails or requests for help. Changes grades after assignments have been graded based on personal opinions. Only gives the student a grade, no explanation of what they did wrong or how to improve besides to reread the criteria. Recommends a student use the tutoring center instead of teacher herself.
I'm a senior and she is the worst professor I have ever had. I would take her again. Here is why: Instructions to assignments were like reading a transcript of a court case. She was accessible but not helpful when you did meet with her. She always seemed distracted. I would recommend you avoid taking any of her classes as you may not pass.
I definitely would not take this class from this professor if you already have a bunch of other classes. You have 2 books to read every week, a weekly activity that requires more reading, 2 quizzes every week and a big writing assignment that will take up the whole semester and you have to meet with writing fellows every month.
So, Jessi gives people a lot of mixed feelings. I've taken several classes from her because she really cares about student success and learning. Her Senior course is devoted to learning how to teach. Everything she does is backed by research for how to teach. This also means there's tons to do and some of it is unorthodox. She's a great teacher.
If you are taking this class online because you don't have time to go to campus and do group work DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I have never felt so inclined to leave a review as I have with Dr. Hill. This class has been an absolute nightmare. Zero organization and completely unnecessary busywork and assigned reading on "teamwork". The final group project is confusing and assignments are constantly revised and edited so no one ever seems to be talking abut the same thing.
70% of the class is easy and I loved it. The other 30% made me never want to see Dr. Hill again and made the semester so hard. The group assignment is awful. She did not have clear grading and was a tough grader. It was so disorganized and she made it way more complicated then it needed to be. I would suggest taking from someone else.
OOOF. Where do I begin. NEVER again. Hardest grader. Did more group work in this ONLINE class than my entire UVU career. I'm a straight A student and I was Lucky to get a B. 0/10. Never would take again.
If you're looking for an easy A this is not the class. She's a tough grader and assigns a TON of work. However, if you are going into a research-based field I would consider her. She may seem condescending at times but she is very willing to help her students and help you understand the material if needed. Also, beware of group projects!
Dr. Hill is so nice but I wouldn't take a class from her again. I've never worked so hard in a class before. I'm a really good student but I struggled. You basically teach yourself the material- will do more work in this one class than all of your others combined. It is unnecessary bc the work doesn't teach you anything. Busy work & tough grading.
She does not teach you a thing. Even though it was an online class, I didn't learn a single thing from her. She just gives readings and quizzes and group projects. I had to youtube a lot of things to find extra information needed for assignments/tests that wasn't found in the readings. Not super helpful when I asked her to explain concepts.
was captivated in her 1010 of 100 students. contrarily, 4850 is intimate and inspiring mandatory formal attire and attendance, but extremely flexible The students collectively decide on classroom dynamics/culture semester-long groups and 80% differing guest lectures you take charge of your learning while she is your guide on the guide on the side
That was the most confusing class I had ever taken. It was online and she has access to so much technology, but just because you have it, does not mean you need to use it all. It just confuses everyone. Group work, excessive, wordy, and confusing communications from her... it was terrible. 0/10, never would recommend.
Dr. Hill is very communicative and organized, but her class is the most labor-intensive that I've ever seen. The quizzes are hard (w/ mandatory 5 hours between attempts), reading annotations are graded, and there are so many assignments to turn in every week. If you have plenty of time and patience to spare, you might like it. If not, avoid it.
This class has SO much work. Understandable because it's a 4 credit hour course but the coursework is very hard. There was a pass/fail system and I personally didn't like it, the stress of needing to pass assignments was too much personally. I knew I was going to fail this class when I couldn't pass the quizzes. If you're smarter than me, take it.
Dr. Hill is a very helpful and accommodating professor. I had multiple opportunities to get help through office hours. Though I only took PSY 1010, it was by far the heaviest workload I've had in a 3 credit hour entry-level class. I spent more time in her class than in all my other classes combined. Go for it if you have no life outside of school.
Would not recommend this class if you are full-time. Easily the worst class I've taken. So overloaded with homework and assignments that I had to throw in the towel with trying to learn just to gets assignments done on time. I loved her 1010 class years ago, but this was too much. I wish I would have dropped it.
She does give good feedback, and is available outside to her students as much as she can be. The feedback, however is largely based on how much feedback YOU ASK her to give. Lots and lots of reading (and work). Very dry textbook. P/F system on A/B/C/D/F grades, very strange, but do your work and you'll be ok. It was panic-inducing at times for me.
Don't take this professor. Don't get me wrong she is sweet and tries to help you out, but the way this class is structured is SO strange. Everyday you do this thing called "POGIL", which is pretty much a timed assignment you do in class that is extremely difficult. Crazy amounts of hw and other assignments. Don't waste your time.
I would say Dr. Hill has a good heart but she doesn't teach you anything and makes you learn by yourself through these things called Pogil activities which you do in a group. You also have to do a bunch of reading and learn by yourself as homework. She is not organized and her grades are very tough. She does surprise assignments too.Not recommended
Professor Hill is really nice, but her course was pretty hard! There are lots of assignments and projects going on at once which makes it difficult to keep up with. However, she is accommodating and willing to work with you.
Professor Hill is one of the worst professors I've ever had. DON'T TAKE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. You teach yourself the material w/ in-class activites and outside of class there is a ton of projects and hw weekly. After class I asked her a question and she refused to give me an answer and fill me in cause I was late to class (finishing a stats test).
