she is horrible at teaching. she's new and she doesn't know what she's doing. you don't have to go to class to pass but she tries to make it more fun by activities because people stopped going to class. she lectures off on topics that only she thinks is interesting and it doesn't make sense. she's passionate about microbiology but can't teach it.
Knowledgeable and passionate about microbiology, but does not know how to teach it. There are only three exams and the first one covered NINE chapters of material. She's light on lectures and instead gives you group projects that you get nothing out of except anxiety. She teaches you as if you've already mastered microbiology. Don't recommend her.
She is very knowledgeable about microbiology but she does NOT know how to teach. There are random participation questions in class, homework due every 2 weeks, lots of group projects, and 3 tests that all include a hard essay question worth half of the grade. Posts everything on a google website instead of icollege. Dont recommend taking her class.
She's a nice, knowledgeable professor. Microbiology is a tough class itself, so it's not her to be blamed!! Her exams are fair compared to other professors; read the textbook and her slides, and the exams should be just fine! LOTS of extra credit opportunities (worth almost 50 points!!!!!) Put in a little effort and it'll be an easy A, I promise!
So shes not a bad person just a bad teacher. She gave out a lot of extra credit but i think its cause she knew she was messing up a lot considering it was her first year. I didnt learn anything really. You dont have to attend class but she kept doing group activities to get people to come even though it failed :(
She was okay. I do think as long as you truly invest yourself into this course, you'll do fine. Her class can get boring because the lectures are pretty heavy and long. Overall, she was cool, attendance wasnt counted, she cares and will help you improve your grade as long as you particpate/stand out in class.
I know you all are looking up classes to register for next semester... please hear me out. Do not take this class, its a setup. That is all. If you still decide to register, you will remember reading this. Her quizzes are impossible, 2 exams all open response, only 3 questions. Tests cover almost 8 chapters of material... i could go on all day.
Trust me when I say this, take any other professor besides her! Semester long group project is a complete nightmare. Online quizzes w/webcam that do not resemble the slides or textbook, her lectures are pointless but makes you do group participation for points. If you want to learn about microbiology, this is not the class for it . Not worth it.
She does not read off her power points but expect you to use them to study. Her power points have nothing to do with her quizzes or exams. The mastering biology is the only easy thing you will get from this class . Her quizzes are on like 4 chapters at a time but she doesnt give anything to study and they are locked down . her exams are 45 minutes
STAY AWAY! Trust me. Absolutely terrible. 5 quizzes total, no study guides and it covers 4-5 chapters. Exams were a joke. Total of 3, last one is optional. 45 minutes for ONE essay question with 5 parts (covered 10-11 chapters). Homework (simple) is every week. Extra credit saved my grade, but be prepared to teach yourself. Very bad teacher.
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. It is her second-semester teaching here. A semester-long group project is easy but she gives no rubrics. Online quizzes w/webcam that do not resemble the slides or textbook, her lectures are pointless but makes you do group participation for points. 2 exams, the 3rd is optional that are 45 min essays. 100 points EC
Tons of talking, in-class activities (graded) and stories that don't help with quizzes or exams (Chapter reviews help).Polls every day as participation credit. No review for quizzes and never provides rubrics. Exams always graded low so, meet with her to gain more points. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU CANNOT DEVOTE MAJORITY OF YOUR TIME TO THIS CLASS.
Go to class bc participation MATTERS. It's 65 pts and trust me, that goes a long way. Tests were easy (essay), she gave the prompts before the exam. Just do the prompts and you'll be fine. Lectures had nothing to do with quizzes, which were HARD. Reading the txtbk did not help. Just go to class and complete the assignments. not a hard class, really
Dr. Joyner is very knowledgeable in environmental micro and bioinformatics. No exams or quizzes in her cure lab, however, tons of group assignments and papers. Multiple deviations with respect to lectures and peer evaluations. Tough last minute grader which makes it hard to have an idea how you're doing in her lab, so be sure to visit office hrs!
Should've dropped this class when I saw quiz and exam dates posted on PowerPoint slides and the syllabus contained no dates. From that point on (AKA day one) everything related to this course was confusing - group work/projects, presentations, exams, quizzes. All uncertain. Microbiology is tough in general, so take it w/ a more organized teacher.
It is honestly an easy A especially if you are a STEM major. The quizzes are the only real issue here in her class because they actually ask in-depth questions from the textbook, but I didn't do 3 of them like at all. She gives plenty of extra credit and the first two exams are easy; she gives a word bank which is all you need to study.
Doesn't teach the subject very well it's cool that she's passionate about the subject but it helps to be able to teach it
I'll admit that she's passionate about her work. She's very interested in her work that sometimes she goes off-topic from the lecture. She can't teach well and her quizzes doesn't have to do with anything on the slides. Her exams are ok she gives you key terms to remember beforehand. Honestly, I don't recommend her.
How are you going have a 1.7 and still be teaching this class.
She makes this course 10x harder than it should be! The course itself is already difficult because you are required to cover the entire textbook within one semester, but she also adds endless assignments. Her quizzes are structured like test! This is a class you really should take by itself. It takes up all your time and energy!
she is the WORST teacher EVER!!! do NOT take her. she failed me because she is biased and thought i did something that i didnt . she needs to be fired because she is BUTT AWFUL!!!! WORSR TEACHER IN HISTORY OF GSU
By far the worst class Ive taken at GSU. It is structured poorly. Her instructions are all over the place. Do not plan on actually learning anything. Especially with the online transition, the class has become even worse. Do not take this class if you want a smooth semester. Its unnecessary and uncalled for. Horrible lectures, poor slides.
She is an extremely hard teacher. She expects students in an intro class to have gone through the textbook with a fine-toothed comb. While online, she gave more work than when not online. She doesn't curve and while she may drop 1 quiz and test, her quizzes are ridiculously hard, with a majority getting low Bs
She is the worst. She sets you up for failure. Everything she assigns is impossible. Please stay away, do NOT take her. Her class is the worst class ever. Awful teacher
The quizzes are IMPOSSIBLE. They are often 47 hard questions that are to be answered in 30 minutes. She assigns so much work as if you don't take other classes. Her answers are never satisfying. I devoted hours to this class every week and it is made more difficult than it needed to be. Don't take this class if you care about your mental health/GPA
Worst teacher to step foot in gsu. she thrives off seeing people fail. if youre not white then shell fail you
Save yourself the time and dont take her. You will fail. She designs her test and quizzes so you fail
So I did get an A. However, shes terrible. If you do get stuck with her do ALL the assignments to the best of your ability. Quizzes are lockdown browser and tests are written response only. If you do all the assignments + extra credit and get Cs on the test and quizzes youll get an A. VERY TIME CONSUMING CLASS.
She expects way to much from her students for a 2000 level class. Too many group projects and her lectures won't help you learn the material. She is easy to get in contact with and if you do the extra credit it's easy to get a good grade.
She doesn't really teach the material and what she does teach, doesn't help in the tests. There is no chance to make up any assignments. There was no leniency whatsoever. Had to take her again and online was 10x worse than it was in person.
Microbio is a hard course. She is fair and helpful. Quizzes are harder than the exams. Everything else is a free 100. Offers up to 9 extra points to overall grade. Comments here are your toxic average student that doesn't read, study, and just complain. If you fit this, take another prof or find a new major. Gets harder in your healthcare program.
IF you are READING THIS DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is EXTREMELY disorganized, and has NO clue of what she is doing. It is the end of the semester and she has not put in grades for anything. She takes no accountability and blames the student for everything she does wrong. She should resign and NEVER work at an institution ever again!
She never really helps and just assigns extra work. Way more work expected than should be for a 3 credit class. Her lectures are always irrelevant to her assignments and you'll just spend countless hours reading the textbook (including the extra optional but not really chapters). Quiz questions clearly come from text bank and are randomly selected.
Dr. Joyner was incredibly unclear in what she expected from us and when everything was due. The quizzes each week covered a lot of material and never lined up with what was discussed each week. She was accessible but also many people had these same issues and nothing was adjusted other than being encouraged to read the text more.
Professor Joyner piles on the work. 77 Total pieces of material for one module. Does not give anyone leniency, although she is clear and concise - her expectations and disregard for students both in their personal and academic lives outweighs everything. Dont take her class unless you want to set up to fail.
THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. I am a student that puts my all into everything I do and make sure to reach out to my professors for help. Her response time is trash and she does not put her students first as so she claims. Her exams and quizzes are extremely difficult so I advise you to study the book NOT her notes because they are not helpful.
Dr. Joyners course is well-structured, there is a lot of assignments due - but it helps since the information is on the quizzes and tests. Our TA for our class also posted discussion questions that really helped my grades on the quizzes & tests. I usually struggle in biology courses, but Dr. Joyner has made this class interesting & manageable.
One of the toughest professors ever. Class Consists of 4 modules with over 60 items in each. Her quizzes are over material weve never learned and the exams are just essay questions. No idea how or why she continues to teach when she has such a horrible rating at GSU & the previous college she taught at Dont take her if you care about your GPA!
I took her class during the summer semester and had to withdraw because her class was a complete mess. The majority of her students were getting low Bs and below since her quizzes are over stuff she never covered. I only took the first exam which was a couple essay questions but the course overall just had a lot of busy work. Take another prof!
If I could rate even lower, I would. Makes it more difficult than it has to be. Open response questions on tests with no clear guide on what to study. Her lectures were completely useless & did not help with the weekly quizzes or tests.
The quizzes are extremely hard. Many made failing grades. The exams are a bit easier but are open responses. The lectures weren't much help. Most questions were from the textbook. There were excessive amounts of assignments-you need to plan ahead. There were also a couple of group assignments. She takes a long time to respond back to emails.
Please take another professor. Dr. Joyners class is assignment heavy with open answer exams and difficult quizzes. Although, she does drop some assignments and 1 quiz and test - if you value your mental health, do not enroll in her class. Its a wonder how she has numerous horrible ratings yet still continues to teach
Very assignment and textbook heavy. She compensates for the fact that everyone bombs the quizzes and tests by assigning a lot of busywork with confusing due dates. Your best bet is to keep up with due dates through groupme and to use the smartbook in MGH to study. Use quizlet to learn the work banks for the test and pray you get a good group.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. Outdated syllabus. I bought the textbook (she's a co-author) for nothing other than busy, irrelevant work. In person class, but a few to none online lectures reposted from her old online class. No organization. She's delusional and clueless about what she's doing. You will get failing grades and not learn ANYTHING.
Should have known this class would be terrible when she didnt go over her syllabus on the first day, mind you a syllabus that was out dated. Her class lecture consists of rambling about irrelevant micro topics. Uses prerecorded covid lectures with barely any information to teach. Dont try to email her, she wont respond ANYbody else is better
Not trying to be dramatic or disrespectful but honestly the worst professor I've taken in my 4 years of college. The structure of the class is nonexistent, the workload is ridiculous, and the syllabus had no correlation with the class curriculum. Do not take her if you value your mental health and I mean that wholeheartedly. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
Im a senior biology premed student and Ive had my fair share of difficult teachers. Hear me when I say that this professor is probably one of the worst Ive had in my 4 years. Her teaching is deplorable and her response time is nonexistent. She takes no responsibility for her mistakes and makes doing well in class a nightmare. DONT TAKE HER!
Theres lots of opportunities to get points, so no worries, you CAN pass. However, her communication, hefty workload, and inconsistency with deadlines make this class hard. Youre better off teaching yourself or getting a new professor if you can help it.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SIGN THIS IS IT, DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE! She is very unorganized with due dates and doesn't teach well. When she does teach and the "notes" she gives are irrelevant to the test/topic. Just read the book that's where the material for the test will be. There's a project that is very time consuming at the end.
worst professor ever. she was very unhelpful and never talked about anything that will help you on the quizzes and tests. lectures were unuseful, have to learn everything on your own. the tests are written responses. the quizzes are on quizlet. one thing I would recommend is making friends in the class so that yall can help eachother
Dr. Joyner makes learning fun! She is very kind, and everything is straightforward. Put in the work, and you'll be fine :)
Dr. Joyner was pretty good. Just stay on top of due dates. There are 2 mandatory exams. The third one is extra credit plus there is so much extra credit. I recommended her over anyone else in the Microbiology department. I am a solid B student but I just stayed on top of her work.
Dr. Joyner is amazing!! She understands her material well and is a big help when asked. you MUST do the reading and hw to pass all the quiz and she has 2 exams written response with the third one being optional. Would definitely take her again!! if you read its an easy A. And the group work is the group you're with for the rest of the year.
Dr.Joyner is one of the best professors I've ever had, she makes you think critically about Microbiology and she really cares about the subject and the student's understanding. Microbiology is a difficult course, the reason she has low ratings is due to this and the fact that students don't actually want to put in the work they need to.
Do not take her unless absolutely necessary. Her class will make your mental health decline - there are many assignments, quizzes, and open-ended essay tests, etc. There’s also a mandatory group project / presentation, so better be sure you pick a good group. Her class is doable, but it’s a huge workload so be warned!
Please dO NOT TAKE HER! she is by far the WORST professor I have ever met. Her classes are mandatory, but she has no idea what she says during her lectures. In the class before exams, she puts you in groups to talk amongst yourselves rather than having an actual review. She is unorganized and unprofessional.
unless you like your mental help, don't take her. she assigns tons of unnecessary homework, and barely teaches. she was always late, and always went over time. she's is not sympathetic and very stuck in her own ways of teaching. she did a lot of break out sessions, but they never helped. her test are 6-7 questions free response. just do your work
Do not take her class. She was the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Her lectures are online and she is constantly late and nothing she says in the lectures pertain to what we are learning. She assigns a lot of group projects that are worth a big part of the grade.
Insane amount of things to turn in. The quizzes are so difficult and filled with information that she never covered in the lectures or PowerPoints. I had to drop this course.
Disorganized. Unclear expectations. Quizzes require lockdown with webcam and the questions are worded terribly. Each answer to the question will be a paragraph long on a timed test and you have to read all 4 because some will be partially right, but not the most right. Minimum 3 assignments per week, but none of them help you learn the material.
Dont take this class if you want your mental health! Tests are difficult and every other week. Lots of reading from text book, several lecture videos, heavy homework assignments none of which help with these tests. In class lectures are mostly break out groups doing assignments that dont help you understand the material. Class starts and ends late
all the low ratings and reviews for this class are very much true. for an intro level class its very unorganized with too much busy work as well as test/quizzes are extremely hard and don't seem to relate to the material covered in lecture videos and in class. I advise taking another professor if you value your gpa, grade and mental health.
She goes way over class time with no respect to your other classes. She gets smart when you email her for help. Her favorite thing to do is put in zeroes for assignments that are IMPOSSIBLE to find on iCollege. I have had not a single moment of clarity in this class. my peers and I are not over exaggerating, she needs to choose another profession.
Hello. I am just here to say JESSICA LEE JOYNER COUNT YO MF DAYS YOU WITCH That is all.
She must have been a loser all her life so she wants to make the rest of our lives difficult. For some reason she grades discussion posts like Putin. You either get a a 0 or 0.5. There is no such thing as 0.1 0.2 0.3. Or 0.4. This professor is an idiot. I highly advise you do not take her class.
worst professor ever
Get a good group, average C+ in quizzes (study with textbook), do extra credit, participation and hw are most of the grade, she's a tough grader so write a lot for reflections. **you have to be on top of everything yourself** Dr. Joyner is a great person and microbio is a tough class, you have to put in the effort!
Her lectures don't tie into what you're going to be tested on. It's best to read the book because she going to be all over the place during her lectures. She's a great historian teacher not microbiology. Find someone else to do it.
Do not take unless you absolutely have to!! Takes a while to get a response from professor. When response was given, it was very vague. Lectures and worksheets rarely matched up with biweekly quizzes. Worksheets almost every class. Had to do heavy homework. If you have to take this professor, make sure to read the textbook and review at end!
Joyner ain't too bad tbh. I would recommend you take her for Microbiology & Public Health before so you have some background on Microbiology. Honestly, I just used my knowledge from that class in the Microbiology class. The exams are open responses and mostly easy. The homework is very excessive but nothing you cannot find on quizlet.
this professor and her masters student that graded our papers probably just wanted to give us a bad grade to drop our gpa (was also very rude) cuz no matter how hard u tried to be on their good side & show that you're actually trying they just didn't care.she also doesn't say what exactly she's grading on, get ready for a surprise on ur transcript!
didnt have a syllabus letting anyone know what they were doing but still gave a B after numerous unanswered emails about what to do in the class. She completely didnt care about our class and still gave a subpar grade.
You get two chances on her quizzes, the case study worksheets are fun, and so were the group projects if you ended up with a good group. She graded everything a day before grades were due and gave me an F or D on things I had submitted. She did not respond to emails either and the course is a bit disorganized. Read the textbook for quizzes.
If you want to pass do not take her. Very strict. You will have to speak to the dean of student !
Don't do it, I gave her a second chance after not getting anything from her Microbiology class. Bad idea... If you like structure, and understanding do not take her. She lacks professionalism and puts everything together at the last minute.
I think she didn't get accepted into being a professor in another department because mama she doesn't teach microbiology and expects you to somehow know it
im begging you if u need to take microbiology DO NOT TAKE HER. She has been the worst professor I have had for the past 2 years here at GSU... She never teaches actual lectures and the only thing she does is breakout rooms that don't even help my learning. I have learned nothing for this class.
I am withdrawing from her course, I will find another microbio professor in the summer. The workload is overwhelming, like I found myself consumed by her work and became anxious. I usually don't mind having a lot of homework but she doesn't really teach in her lectures. All we do are breakout rooms, she goes over some stuff but it's not enough.
MAKE THIS TEACHER YOUR ABSOLUTE LAST OPTION. She is very inconsiderate of any classes you may take besides hers. She ensures that most of your time goes towards her class. She assigns a group project that is absolutely ridiculous. I genuinely do not know how she is still allowed to teach at GSU. Peace be with you if you unfortunately get her.
I seriously don't understand these other reviews, so far week one she is very kind and she is actually going into the topic of biology and making it fun. I find her class very engaging and I actually can't wait to learn more in her class.
Ngl, her class is incredibly disorganized. No due dates for anything posted (no late assignments will be accepted so gl), there is sm material and the lectures are literally everyone fend for themselves. It also feels as if her lectures are a recap of microbio instead of teaching it for the 1st time. Only 2 lectures down, and I'm alr super lost :/
I would like to say that even thought it's the first couple of weeks, she makes the class a thousand times harder than it needs to be. She acts as if we're taking her class only and the workload and her lectures are insane and ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!! I love to study and learn but her lecture makes me hate it.
Lectures are absolutely useless, quizzes have nothing to do with lectures/slides/textbook. Her lectures videos on iCollege are from her COVID online classes. good luck lol
swear this class harder than biochem and ochem not due to the content, but due to the teaching style.
End-of-semester evaluation shouldn't be the only time our concerns are heard about BAD professors. The AI essay questions are bogus; we're doing her job for her by creating questions she should be doing. Her lectures are all over the place, and in every class, we only do group work. The quizzes are disgustingly hard because she barely teaches!
She is terrible. She goes on and on about nonsense and then gives us study guides that have nothing to do with the test. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Don't expect to get lectured by her; she talks about things that aren't important. You have to teach yourself the entirety of the class. She expects you to read 200+ pages for quizzes alone, on top of having daily activities AND hundreds of homework questions. We expressed our concern to her about feeling unprepared, and she tried to gaslight us.
We tried telling her where we're struggling & she brushed it off. Be ready for group assignments where no one fully knows what to do. Not much lecture during class time but many assignments. It's expected to use personal time for group assignments. Tests are tough bc she doesn't lecture. She's a nice person but should change her teaching model imo.
This professor is literally the worst biology professor I have ever had! She barely teaches half of the class and talks about random topics, and we never have time to finish what we actually need to know for class. She always claims to have time at the end of class to work on our group projects. She expects way too much out of her flipped lecture.
Worst online class I've ever taken. The professor is completely clueless and unorganized. Assignments appear with no warning, she barely communicates, and grading takes forever. The honors portion is nonexistent. Feels like she makes it up as she goes. Don't waste your time taking her class.
She doesn't know what she's teaching. students have questions and she never answers....she doesn't even teach and assignments appear in the portal with no warnings. DO NOT TAKE HER
So many people complain about the teaching style whereas I appreciate a mix of both interactive activities and learning. She's great and supportive. Just be committed and while I haven't done any higher than a C so far I will still be getting an A
Dr. Joyner was an incredibly tough and rather rude professor. She uses AI to make her entire syllabus, and wouldn't know what's going on/due. Had many assignments on iCollege that weren't meant to be completed, and would be upset that we weren't doing assignments due to the confusion. And then when asked questions, she'd answer so rudely.
I earned an A, but I wouldn't recommend this class. It's disorganized, quizzes don't match the textbook or homework, and many questions come from random articles. Studying is confusing, lectures are mostly reading slides, grading is tough, and I was given a zero for attendance despite being present. It was fixed later, but the explanation unclear..
