This wasnt like a normal english class with grammar quizzes and stuff but thats a good thing. Cool assignments and shes pretty funny and nice too.
Easy class if you ask for help. All about food politics, so its an interesting class
Very nice teacher. She is willing to work with you even if you don't get it right away. Not a lot of reading more visual work!
She's a really cool person, and is passionate about what she teaches. Highly recommended.
I took two classes with Weber. She was fun, and had a lot of class discussions; not very often did she give lectures. Assignments were always clear, and the class was developed around a topic that was very interesting. Would definitely take another class with her!
The essays weren't like my other classes in high schol and I didn't think I was doing it right but she talked about how to do everything in class and if you meet with Dr. Weber in her office she will help you. She really likes teaching and I'm going to take another class with her!!
I would not recommend this class. She allows too much of her own personal bias in politics to be incorporated. Not very clear instruction, overwhelming personality that expects too much from her students. She's a nice person, and its relativly easy, yet the major assignments are too confusing.
Jessica is an amazing professor if you like the subject. I want to be a writer and she really helped me along that path. Most of the work is critical thinking~if you're looking for an easy class to skate by in, she isn't for you. Very engaging and cares a lot about the subject.
Dr. Weber is a great and smart professer! She gets really excited and can be kind of dorky about the topics but makes it fun. You defiantly have to go to class to know what's the homework and what's going on with the assignments. The whole class is about film but really it's all critical thinking, not just watching movies.
Dr. Weber is one cool cat. Sometimes I felt like the papers/projects were difficult to do since there weren't many guidelines or instructions AND her expectations were specific when it came to grading. I really liked the class though, it was unconventional and she wasn't afraid to explore controversial topics. I highly recommend her! :)
Jessica is a good teacher and was pretty helpful. She made the class interesting and I learned a lot. I recommend her for Eng102!
Jessica was the best professor I ever had!! I came out of her class iwth a million new ideas and things to google! She's so smart and really relates to what's going on in the world today. I'd take a third class with her if I could!
Love her! I took her for 101 online and she made it so easy and fun! She tells you what you need to do to improve your papers and will meet with you to make sure you understand! I emailed her all the time with questions and she always answered quickly! I would recomend her to anyone she rocks!
terrible teacher. hard grader
This class is difficult. There are a lot of online readings, no textbook, long class discussions, and long awful papers. I wouldn't recommend this class. Somebody else here said that the instructor has an overwhelming personality. It's true.
She is a good teacher, the class itself shouldn't be a breeze it is a college level class... She's a really corky person which I like. She grades kind of tough, but not insane. You can go to her for help and she reply's to emails sooooo fast. I would totally recommend her!
Jessica is genuinely one of THE most amazing teachers someone could ever have. She cares A LOT about teaching & her students. If you struggle, let her know. She is a dedicated listener and an even better helper. Also, her persona is SO fun and jolly - truly can brighten someone's day. If you want to enjoy school, TAKE HER!!!
Jessica is an awesome lady and has an effective way of teaching so that class is fun but she explains hard concepts too. There is alot of reading at first but it's all towards the research project which is your own free choice of topics. She brings alot of passion to the class atmosphere so I will defiantly take her again if I can!!
She is probably one of the most genuine amazing teachers I know. She used to teach at LSU, and she knows her stuff. She is pretty chill, but she expects a lot. You learn a lot. She's the type of teachers that will stop to have a conversation with you in the hall way just out of complete interest and compassion. Overall one of my favorite teachers!!
Have had Jessica for two different courses now and am consistently impressed by her dedication and understanding nature. Poetry Writing is an in-depth course but if you're in class, willing to step out of your comfort zone and trust yourself, Jessica works with anyone who shows effort. Highly reccommend!!!
I took a class that was joint Engl102 and GS150. It was very unorganized. I asked Dr. Ketcham if she would please place all of our assignment on canvas ahead of time so we could know what was coming and block out time for it as well as prepare for it. she replied that it was two classes in one and that we should already have time set aside for it.
Jessica is an amazing teacher. She cares about what she's teaching but also much, much more. She incorporates important and meaningful aspects of the real world into her lectures. Jessica made me WANT to learn, especially from her. Her class was tough but if you give her your time and effort, she will not disappoint you. My favorite teacher yet!
Lots and lots of reading covered in a short amount of time. Approachable and gives good feedback. Lots of group work. Make sure you have the time to fully invest in completing all of the readings and work. She challenges your thinking. She's not an easy prof, but you will develop more skills. Tough, but worth it. Keep up, and you'll do fine.
At times it may seem like she's being a bit of a "hard-ass", but I actually appreciated that about her. She actually is trying to teach the content versus lecturing and hoping you get it. She will be tough on you, but she gives very good feedback and helps with progressing your work.
Although she seems like a highly intelligent, thoughtful person, she lacks the organization and clarity to be a truly great professor. Deadlines, rubrics, and other resources were almost never posted on Canvas, therefore attendance is crucial. Horribly high expectations for a professor with little support or clear expectations.
Great person to talk to during a class or one on one, very friendly and willing to help.
Dr. Ketcham is one of the most 'real' people in this line of work, she cares about if you learn it. She is SUPER blunt and straight forward - but will most likely tell you to figure it out without much of a rubric. She strives to improve the quality of education, and is my favorite professor to date - CT ENG102-GS150 learning comunnity
Ketcham is a good teacher. If you follow the checklist and do what she says you'll be fine. She'll give you more feedback if you ask for it. Very clear instructions but Canvas made things confusing a few times, and she was fine about extending deadlines. Probably the only non math and engineering one that I'll use after college.
There are a tons of homework, and all things went so crazy and fast. All I can say is this, if you try hard, you will get want you want. So please be responsible for her instructions!
Dr. Ketcham was one of the most inspiring professors I have ever had. She made it clear that there were resources in and outside of the classroom for both the homework and for the college as well. She has a fascinating way of teaching the subject, while incorporating global knowledge as well. I would absolutely take her class again, and I have!
every single homework was applicable to my job. Also I think I saw her at 4 shows in Seattle this summer so she must be fun. I wish this wasn't an online class because I didn't really get to know her. Good rep.
I took her for a prefall college 101... 11 weeks in 8 days. Homework took 5-8 hours a night and a ton of reading. No complaints. Rough 8 days, but I survived.
She used a free program called slack to email and was always online so my group could talk to her pretty much anytime we needed. I used the textbook but her canvas readings were more useful than the textbook readings.
As mentioned by another student, Dr. Ketcham uses Slack to communicate, which is much better than email! She really pays attention to her students and puts a lot of work into the class. Technical Writing was very applicable to future (or current) careers. She seems like an amazing professor, and I wish I was able to take her class in person!
Dr. Ketcham really helped me make a smooth transition from HS to college. She told us about college life/resources, how to interact with professors, pros/cons of Cascadia, etc. She emphasizes complete understanding of the material. There's a ton of homework (it's a quarter in 8 days, after all) and a lot of group work (incl. a final group project).
At the beginning of the quarter, Dr. K was very accessible and gave great feedback. However as we began to approach the end of the quarter she stopped responding to messages and wouldnt grade assignments until the last day of class. Also, all of the homework is worth a ridiculous amount of points and really long.
Ketcham responded to my 3am emails and didnt seem mad about extensions, so that was cool. I learned a lot but it was harder than a freshman level class and way more about research. That is good for when I transfer but means no sleep now!!!! I made it threw though!
Dr. Ketcham, being a respected member of the Cascadia faculty, was difficult to work/communicate with and graded stubbornly. I very much enjoyed the class and concepts but I believe my grade suffered due to her inability to relate. Feedback left on major assignments was scant (if any) and I received none on my final project. Lack of care was shown.
Does not provide feedback when asked. Repeatedly asked why I did not receive good grades on specific assignments when I adhered to all of the requirements. Asked so that I could do a better job on the next assignment. Never received any responses, she continued to grade without any feedback on how to improve.
1st half of quarter: lots (4-7/week) of assignments (discussion boards, memos, textbook questions, etc.). 2nd half: big projects (resumes, final project, etc.) that are worth a lot. Dr. Ketcham's smart, but doesn't respond to messages very often so you can't get consistent help. Follow directions & produce excellent work if you want a high grade.
Ketcham was the best! I'm not sure what class these other people sho said she's not available were in but she was always on IM for my class and we all used it to ask questions all the time. She even did video chat with my group the day before our final project was due while she was in a waiting room with her kid and we were in the library!
This is my second class with Ketcham and I would take a third. She always comes up with fascinating assignments like 4 this class its prototyping a Echo Alexa conversation and making future science fiction product designs. She does expect you to read a lot and gave pop quizzes bc noone was reading. I agree that she responds fast if you use slack.
Be aware that there is absolutely ZERO instruction from her in this online class. Don't bother with this class because all you'll be doing is reading from a 700 page textbook and be piled in homework that comes with confusing instructions and get no help from her when you need it. Why pay to teach yourself and stress over homework.
She expects you to read, yeah. Its an English class so if your complaining about reading and writing maybe take another class. One thing I can say is that the assignments were helpful and 2 of my teammates got internships from one of the class projects. Shes on slack a lot and gave feedback on all the things I asked for help with really fast.
Ketcham was beyond patient with us even though like half the class never had their work. I used her for portfolio feedback for another class and she was really helpful. Wish I would have taken her when I was at my best, kinda feel coronajipped.
Great hands on learning. Also I really appreciated that Dr. K was my only proffessor who talked about BLM this quarter. You can tell she cares about her students and helped us with resources related to coronavirus all term.
Prof. K worked with me in video sessions almost every week for the last 4 weeks. I will never forget how helpful she was in her zoom hours. I work fulltime and am in school fulltime and because of everything going on this quarter I fell hard behind and she told me not to drop and we started meeting to help me get caught up. She let me turn everythi
Dr. K was very helpful. However, this online class she kept assigning group work and in these times it's hard to work with peers because half the class barely did work at all, so group work was a pain that kept repeating. She also did not grade the majority of work until the last week of the quarter. Overall great prof though and very useful class!
This is my second class with Dr. Ketcham, and if I had the room in my schedule, I would absolutely take a third and a fourth. She really cares about the student's learning and will push you to become a better thinker and writer. They're also really accessible for additional Zoom calls or a quick question on Slack, which I really appreciated.
Dr. K was so caring and helpful. They helped me through a hard time in my life and helped me get caught up on work without feeling like a failure. They made a YouTube channel of tutorials because I couldnt make office hours and really cares about students being supported!!
I took this in Spring 21, and it was asynchronous. The class has a theme about health and science, and for the major of the quarter, you are doing a project based on a topic around medicine/health. She uses Slack which makes communication clear, and she is really sweet.
I took her class online during Winter Quarter. She is so nice and cares about her students. There are lots of writing assignments and for some, there's a good amount of reading involved. Whenever I emailed her, she never responded but would answer if I messaged her on slack. She is an easy grader and I would recommend doing the extra credit!!
The class is broken down research project with each week being a little part of the project. Your choice of topic! If you keep up,and chunk out your time you can pass the class with little to no effort. You read ALOT. ALWAYS msg prof. on slack otherwise she is just unresponsive. Other than that she is an amazing prof. and you never feel overwhelmed.
She was a great prof. very understanding when you had problems outside of class, would take her again.
Ketcham is a kind person... and that's where my compliments end. For reference, I am going to be an English major, with a plan to teach English. I've taken 6 English classes in total, and not only is this the only one i struggled with, I almost failed it. Told me to drop the class after a week because I missed an assignment and had an F.
I had Professor Ketcham for BWRIT135 at UWB and she is the most caring professor you will ever meet. She's incredibly helpful and understanding, she gives the best feedback as well. She isn't a tough grader and is available to accommodate your needs to the best of her abilities. Her class is a no brainer; you should definitely take it!
Lots of reading! Participate a ton! Be mature. Pros: Very engaging & fun personality. Intelligent speaker. Do not skip on the first parts of the class instructing on how to do college reading & notation, it will make or break you! Great late policy. Con: sometimes slightly rude to students, or what some may perceive as rude.
I was dreading taking english because I hate writing long papers. this class was totally different. She teaches research and the whole class is all one big project so not a lot of busy work . There's alot of reading in the first few weeks but then its just work for your big project. She really cares about students you can tell. I'll take her again.
Dr. Ketcham is one of the most transparent professors I've ever had, she explains the reasons for all her assignments and how it fits into future classwork which helped me stay motivated. Her Canvas class is extremely well organized so I always knew what I needed to do, even when I was out of town or busy at work. She is really supportive.
this prof was the sweetest most caring teacher i have met. She answers all my questions via slack and is super easy to talk to. very interesting and engaging class work which she used labor based grading. definitely suggest this class, and she affected my future in many ways. so supportive!
She has a very generous late policy and supports neurodivergent students. I met with her once a week in zoom bc I could not attend her office hours & this class was online so we created a plan for each week that was lined up with her weekly checklists. Def read the checklists to stay on top of it all. The actual class was so useful for my major. A+
Teaches at UW. Wonderful professor and person. She's so down to earth and a role model. Go to class, participate in assignments and work and you'll be fine. Graded with weekly assignments reading, and then a few papers that make up a final project you work on all quarter. Not hard at all, she helps alot along the way.
I would never take a class from this professor again and would advise others to do the same. I see she has gotten a good amount of positive feedback on her but to me and a few of my peers, she came off as demeaning, rude, and not caring. I have received high B's or A's in every class I have ever taken except this one.
Her course is very organized, there are a couple of big assignments but she separates them and teaches you gradually. I learned a lot from her class and enjoyed it.
For an asynchronous I had to do a group project with 2 other people... If I could give 0 stars I would because I am going insane. You pick an asynchronous class so you can do EVERYTHING at your own pace and not to have to interact with anyone... THEN WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT ON TWO PEOPLE
she cares about her students so much and talks about the whole college experience when shes teaching. you can tell how much she cares about students who are new to the system too. i had been falling behind because of things going on in my life but she met with me every week to help me know what to do next.
This is an online asynchronous class, why are we doing 3 group projects? Her directions for assignments were very vague, everyone I talked to in the class was confused. I had issues in my group and she had an attitude in her responses. But she basically gives a 100% unless you seriously mess up. Gives a 48 hour grace period on most assignments too.
She is very understanding person and incredibly passionate about her job. She WILL work with you if you're struggling. She has a warm personality and i can't recommend her enough if you want to grow you skills in critical thinking and evaluation in writing. She is a mentor & i've left her class with many things i will carry with me in my writing.
Super Coolio yessssss
Win win chin
Dr. K is the most caring faculty I have had in college. She has met with me for personal coaching for transfer materials too! I wish all teachers understood students lives like she does!
Flexible high standards high support
Easy A, but professor was lacking with communication. Near finals, she provided zero response when asked about a medical concern. 1 week later, I had to ask the tutor instead who responded quickly. There is no rubric for any assignment (including the main essay) and the instructions are minimal and vague. Her method of teaching is learn by example.
Very accessible on Zoom. We met weekly at the same time day and I appreciated her help with writing and time management. I also met with the tutor who was her student before so he was very helpful too!
Highly Highly Highly recommend Jessica! I'm in two classes with her and could listen to her talk all day. She is brilliant and helpful outside of class if you ask to meet. She even did research on the school I'm transferring to and gave me a checklist of classes to look at based on my interests!!! Amazing experience.
Caring, passionate, kind and filled with wisdom. I am grateful to have taken her class that helped me out of my comfort zone. You will leave every class with new information and you will defiantly learn and grow with Dr. Jessica.
Very sarcastic and rude, students were scared to ask questions. She would take away points for "not following instructions" when instructions were rarely given on Canvas, never written down, and always extremely vague. Very long rants. Dr Ketcham is the first teacher that has made me want to give up on my dream of getting a master's degree.
Dr. Jessica showed me that I could pursue my dreams of becoming a PhD. Inside of class, she brings incredible resources and takes time to explain institutional structures that are barriers for some of us, while outside the class she helped me find 3 literature journals to submit my work to. Amazing professor and person.
Her class was alright and the material/assignments were very valuable for me as a writer, but she's quite condescending to students. Sometimes I felt that I was being reprimanded like a child for something as silly as asking, “Can you clarify the instructions?” I love writing, but it was hard to find motivation to participate in her class.
Jessica was an incredible professor who cares alot about her students. I wish I could take another class but I'm graduating. Take this class if you want to expand your mind about your writing and what short writing can do.
Prof. Jessica was available for our questions, concerns, and feedback requests. I genuinely enjoyed this class from the first day because of the way she welcomed us in, and I feel that, as a student, that is possibly the most important thing for us when walking into a classroom with no idea what to expect. Good energy and daily smiles helped a lot
To everyone who is so pressed at her, did you even do your work or were you mad you didn't get glazed for your unfinished short story? She teaches with high standards but's lk available all the time to help. She treats us as adults even if you're in RS. She even WANTS to help us get published. Yeah you reading this. She would even help you. 10/10
I actually really enjoyed this class. She was really fun and engaging! Overall, I learned way more than I expected and feel more confident doing real research.
Dr. Ketcham is an amazing professor! I learned so much about research and writing, and I was became much more confident in my ability to synthesize and question. Come to class and engage! They create such a great learning environment in lectures and it only hurts you if you don't participate. I can't wait to take Dr. Ketcham again this fall!
Professor Ketcham was one of the most helpful professors I've ever encountered. She went above and beyond to help us with college life, reading and analysis skills. She gave extra credit to meet with the class tutors, who she trains so they know the assignments. Don't sleep on the office hours because she helps way more than advisers.
Ms Ketcham was an amazing professor and classes were genuinely great and exciting
This class automatically receives the lowest possible score from me because of the sheer absurdity of having required synchronous group projects in an ASYNCHRONOUS CLASS. It's near impossible to line up free time with two other teammates who also have jobs. Not what I signed up for. The instructions on assignments are also very unclear.
This professor is a very kind-hearted professor who prioritizes teaching and helps you do your best. The work isn't hard and pretty enjoyable.
