She was so helpful and put a lot of work into making sure everyone learned the material. Somehow took what seemed to be a foreign language and made it translatable.
She explained difficult concepts very clearly and in a way that was easy to understand. She's very down-to-earth and genuine. She has a gift for teaching and you can tell she cares about her students.
To be able to explain such complex concepts in a manner that each student truly understands is remarkable. From mathematical derivation to concepts, she clearly knows the material. Absolutely wonderful, helpful, and delightful! It is clearly apparent her love for teaching and wanting to help others learn! Strongly recommend!
I was struggling badly in Pchem, it just wasn't clicking. Prof Koppen took time to sit with me and nail down the concepts and gave me direction on how to study for this class. She seems like she actually enjoys teaching. Would definitely take another one of her classes.
Able to explain things in a very clear and easy to understand way.
She was really good at explaining difficult concepts without overwhelming students. She was a genuine person and has a gift for teaching. I would definitely take a class with her.
She is really helpful and is good at explaining the material we didn't understand in the lecture. Her exam reviews are awesome!
I like her style a lot. She helps students prepare for exams and explains the material in a way that I can understand. Pchem is a really hard class, Jessica makes it easier. She gives extra exam reviews if we want and is always available in her office or in the hall or wherever I run into her (like Einstein Bagel last week).
Very good lab instructor. She helps a lot with the lab reports but grades kind of tough. She always talks about the theory behind the stuff we do which makes the lab more interesting. Highly recommend!
I really like her recitation class. She goes over old exam problems and answers questions about material from lecture. She definitely emphasizes the "important" material - what we need to understand for the exam. I like her style a lot, super laid back and funny. I would really like to take a class with her.
Jessica is very helpful and she's really good at teaching, she always comes in smiling and joking and the time goes by really quick. You can tell she cares about helping us because she volunteers to teach this class. I usually don't like asking questions but I feel really comfortable with her, she never makes me feel stupid. I love her attitude.
Dr J is a great lab instructor, she's a fair grader too. The lab reports are really a pain but she helped me alot. I
Very cool instructor, I just got my grade and I'm so happy! She was very helpful in recitation. I would definitely take another class with her.
Jessica is the coolest lab instructor I have ever encountered in my life. She is very helpful, a fair grader, and pretty chilldown to earth. I highly recommend taking her class.
Jessica is really cool! She is very helpful with the experiments and will try to fix mistakes with the equipment. She is so nice and never makes me feel stupid (like some other profs). The grading is fair and she always writes notes when I lose points.
Just awesome
There is not enough room to write a review fully explaining how refreshing it was to have such a positive and helpful instructor as Dr. Koppen so here are some bullet points: -within the same day e-mail responses -super funny -very attentive to questions and problems in class -patent with (re)explaining -crystal clear instructions
Dr. Koppen is by far one of the best professors I've had at Oakland. She makes lab fun and easy to understand. She is very accommodating with office hours and will meet with you outside office hours if need be. She wants her students to succeed and truly cares about teaching. I wish I could have her as my prof for the rest of my undergrad.
I would sing up for any class this professor teaches. She keeps an excellent line of communication open with students. Goes the extra mile to help out someone in need even when it's information you are assumed to have learned previous to the course. She understands the practical and important aspects of information and focuses there. 5 stars!!!!
Wish she taught more classes! This professor's teaching style focuses on what information is relevant and important within the field. Is very passionate and knowledgeable. Very willing to meet with you if needed but is also great with communicating with the class and preparing people for potentially complicated concepts or labs.
Excellent professor! When she lectures it's interesting and approachable. Never had a hard time attending. Teaching style allows you to understand complicated information without loosing any details. I wish she taught more classes! I would switch my schedule around to take her class over others. You lucked out if you get her as a professor!
Really great professor. One of my favorite. Wish she taught more. Passion for the subject and easy to understand. Has an excellent way of explaining things. Helps you see the larger picture and focus on the important, relevant parts. Goes the extra mile for students. Would take any class she teaches.
Chemistry is challenging to begin with but, Dr. Koppen is so good at relating to students the material she provides is approachable and extremely helpful. She doesn't waste her time with unnecessary details and gets right into the important aspects of the subject material. Great professor! Made a huge difference having her as a professor!
She's the best professor I've ever had at Oakland. I'd take her for anything.
This was her first time teaching 104, she's usually an Orgo professor but she's amazing! She's very clear in her lectures, goes everything important in great detail. She's quick when replying to e-mails, very helpful. Really cares about her students. I'm taking her for 204 next semester. More professors should be like her.
Professor Koppen is a very good teacher. She's exciting and teaches the material very well despite the fact that I absolutely hate Chemistry. She's has actually helped me to understand it a bit better than I have in the past.
Great teacher! I recommend her, only thing I don't like is that we have online quizzes, would have rather just taken them in class. Does extra credit and has short tests, so there is no room for error. two thumbs up, but would rather have stuck with pop quizzes
Best professor I've ever had. she is heaven sent!! Take her!
AMAZING professor!!!! You could seriously skip everyday and not get the book and still pass with a great grade! I never bought the book, don't need! Super easy extremely clear!
I definitely recommend her! I'm at OU for a second degree so I've gone through 4 years of college already and I've never had a professor more dedicated to having her/his students succeed more than Prof. Koppen. She responds to emails about specific questions, gives extra credit, explains each topic very well and genuinely loves chemistry.
By far the best professor I've ever had. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She understands that chemistry isn't for everyone so she makes all of her lectures to the point and easy to understand. Highly recommend taking this professor.
Professor Koppen is an amazing teacher. She explains chemistry so easily that it is easy to understand and if you do the practice exams you will do perfectly fine on the tests. Sometimes you do lose her in her lectures because she goes on and on about something completely different but other than that I would recommend to take her!
Favorite professor I've had so far. She's very sweet and cares that her students do exceptionally well and understands what she's lecturing. She likes giving examples and practice questions during her lectures which I've found very helpful. Her tests are short but really easy. Come to lecture and you'll do great.
Professor Koppen is one of the best professors at Oakland. She is always there for you. If you get less than an 80% in this class, its completely your fault. She gives you all the materials and help to make sure you succeed. Do the homework(even if its not mandatory), and review powerpoints, and you should do well.
One of the best professors at OU! Always willing to help her students. Very fair grader. Lowest exam and quiz was dropped, and w/e points you had earned for the lowest quiz was given back in extra credit points. If you study and attend class, you will have no problem passing with a high grade. Needed book for HW on each chapter, not graded.
Professor Koppen was amazing. The class was clear and easy to follow. The exams did get very conceptual very quickly, but I think that had more to do with the difficulty curve of the material than her style. Extra credit was available, office hours were accessible, tests and exams were passable. Best professor 2015.
She is the best professor I have ever had and will do anything to help you succeed in the class! She is so approachable, fair, and genuinely wants you to do well. I wish I could take her for every class!!
Explained stuff really well and was very clear on what we needed to know for exams. Kids either did really well or completely failed it, all of the quizzes and test were easy but the final was extremely hard. Didn't buy the textbook, her notes and homework solutions are so detailed I didn't need it.
koppen is an amazing professor! Like someone else previously said, if you don't do well in this class you have no one to blame but yourself. She does an amazing job explaining everything. all quizzes have extra credit, as well as a bonus question on each exam. i didn't need to open my book once, as her lectures were so helpful!
Koppen is hands down one of the biggest sweethearts on campus. It is very clear that she cares about her students and how they learn. She also knows exactly what she's talking about w/o being condescending or expecting students to understand more than she explains. Take her class!
Professor Koppen is absolutely hilarious! She constantly makes fun of herself, but does it in the cutest way! Her lectures are very straight forward and she does a ton of example problems so you know how to do the actual problems when it comes to the exam. I would/am taking her again and would recommend her to anyone! Best professor!!
Professor Koppen is the best professor I have ever had. She is wonderful and does everything in her power to ensure her students do well. Take her for chemistry! She is the best!
She is a very understanding professor who really wants all of her students to do well. She looks out for each and every student to see how she/he can get the highest grade. Although some of her teaching strategies can seem difficult at times, she is more than willing to help you out if you attend her office hours. I recommend taking Chem with her!!
Professor Koppen is without a doubt the best college professor I have had. She took a class that isn't exactly the easiest and made it clear that if you put forth the effort that you WILL succeed. However, if you don't want to put forth the effort you will struggle hard. And she will always be there to meet if you don't understand a concept
This professor gives all of her students a different way of learning; by providing power point presentations, video lectures, webex and homework assignments. In addition, she gives extra credit and immediate feedback to any email she is sent. I highly recommend her to anyone taking Chemistry for those who fear the topic. She's amazing.
This is without doubt the BEST professor I've had at Oakland University. If you took any high school chem class, this course will be a BREEZE. She goes slow and lets you ask questions and always asks if she explained a concept in a way you can understand. She takes time do write out all HW! Lots of extra credit! She wants you to succeed! 10/10!
Professor Koppen was my first class beginning my freshman year and she set such high standards for what I consider a good professor. She is so kind and understanding, and is so clear on what she wants done. NO OWL!! please take her, she wont let you down. :)
Great teacher probably one of the BEST at Oakland. If you truly want to understand Chemistry and get a good grade take her.
Professor Koppen is an amazing professor!! Currently taking her again for CHEM 201. 4 tests one gets dropped & then cumulative final exam. Curves exam if needed, the final was curved. Extra credit available on tests and quizzes. She wants you to do good so dont be afraid to ask questions! Take notes and do all homework & you'll be ok! Ended w/ 3.6!
Koppen is my favorite professor on campus by far! If you aren't understanding a concept she makes time for you! She emails back quickly and treats everyone equal! She understands that the material can be hard! Super nice and down to earth and will always go above and beyond to allow students to do well! Take HER!
Nicest lady in the world but this class was a complete disaster. Orgo is confusing as it is and the fact that she makes her slides the week before is ridiculous. TEST WERE 20 QUESTIONS WHICH IS THE DUMBEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD OF IN MY LIFE. Get 4 wrong and enjoy getting a low B- on the exam, that's if you got the rest of them right. Good luck.
Just talking to my peers , I was happy that I wasn't the only one confused to understand what she wanted out of her exams. She says her exams were easy but I've never seen so many people drop . She's confusing and some tests I felt cheated on especially the first exam. You get a drop of 2 grades but that tells you a lot.. I felt helpless
Emails quick , grades fast, but her methods are not the best on campus . I felt rushed through material, I felt like things on exams were not what was explained in the homework , it was either oversimplified or a tricky question and not straight forward . I'm in between right now with grading but this class could be introduced to students better.
Don't do it, just stay away ESPECIALLY if youre thinking of taking orgo with her. So so so so unclear with what she wants because she herself doesn't know what she wants. I never knew how to prepare for an exam and I never felt confident coming out of one. Tricky exams filled with the finest of detail when each Q is worth 5% of your exam/quiz grade
Koppen is basically a babe. Also she's a great professor. Take her for both 104 and 201. very good lectures and explains everything really well.
A 90% is a 4.0 an 83 is a 3.5 try finding that with any other orgo prof here. Koppen is amazing at what she does. IF you're not doing well its because you're not taking it seriously. Id recommend her to anyone.
Fantastic person and professor. She tries her hardest to make sure you understand the material, and understands that it is difficult for some students. Read, read, read. Utilize her office hours, and you should be fine. Chemistry isn't my thing, but if it's yours, you'll do great in her class.
The most important thing to note is that you need your book. You won't fail without it, but if you want an A you should use it. The slides are made to cover as much of the content as possible in the lecture time, but the time frame is short for such a heavy subject. So, read the book first, then look at the slides for review. 4 exams, 6 quizzes.
She is a great professor, had her for 104 and took her again for 201. Big mistake, she is unclear with her exams and says that what is on the practice exam is on the exam, but I found that not to be true. Her exams were very detailed and didn't go along with the practice exams.
I took her for 104 &again for 201. She is an absolutely amazing professor& she tries her best to make sure that students understand material. 104 was great I had an amazing grade& I recommend everyone to take her, but absolutely not for 201. It is extremely fast paced&she rushes through the material. practice exams are nothing like the actual exam.
Took koppen for both 104 and 201 because she is so amazing. she explains everything perfectly and she is really relatable. you definitely need to put the time in outside of class, especially for 201, but she explains everything very well. Definitely take her!!!
Koppen is awesome. She is so caring and understanding towards her students. If you're ever having a problem or hard time just email her and meet with her and she will work everything out with you. She's awesome. Make sure you do understand her grading method though because it can get a bit confusing.
Professor Koppen is hands down the greatest professor at OU! She truly cares about the well-being of her students. She explains the criteria in a great matter, making sure her students understand the material before going on. The material itself is confusing, but she does try to help. Take her!!!!! She really is the best
Professor Koppen is a great person. Her 104 class was great but for 201 she was not experienced in teaching the class. She was confused her-self with most of the material. I will be taking this class again to get a better grade I ended with 2.8. You have to study and put the work into this class. It should be your only hard class.
First I want to start off by saying that Organic chemistry is as hard as you have heard. As someone who struggled with regular chemistry I was worried but as time went on in class it became easier as time went on. Maybe it was just me studying more effectively or her teaching method but I ended up with a 3.4. I can not recommend her highly enough.
She is great, truly cares about students' success. This was her 1st time teaching 201 so at times she was a bit unclear but I'm sure it will get better. There is a lot of material to cover so it was tough but not impossible. I put in the work and got a 4.0. Using the book is very helpful & homework (not mandatory) is crucial to passing the tests.
This is the second class I have taken with Professor Koppen (first being CHM 104) and she is the absolute best! She is a little quirky which may take some getting used to at first. But the criteria for her class is clear, despite the class being difficult. And she is always there to explain something if you need help. Overall my favorite prof at ou
Jessica was by far THE BEST teacher i have had at OU, she wants all of her students exceed and is always willing to answer questions and meet with you after class hours. I had her for CHM 104 and 201, which are very difficult classes, and she knows that.. so she always tried to make class enjoyable! If you attend class and study you will do great!!
Jessica was an amazing professor! Organic Chem is hard, but she made it manageable. She knows it's hard and does her best to help you understand. This was my first time taking it and I took it online. Which was way harder, probably, than in person. She gives a lot of extra credit. That really helps boost your grade.
She really loves what she does which makes it so much more interesting. This was an online class, so I expected to have a harder time staying on track, but she makes it really easy to stick to the schedule. She posts weekly lectures and gives us homework to prepare us for the quiz every week. As long as you listen and do the homework, you'll pass.
Over explains and uses a lot of examples, but if you are not understanding the material, this is a good thing. She is so sweet and genuinely loves teaching her students, while having fun doing it.
Koppen is great. She goes really slow in lectures with a ton of practice problems. If you are ever iffy on a subject and she teaches it, I highly recommend you take her!
She is a really good professor. She's nice, she cares, and wants to make sure that her students pass. She does give tons of practice problems which is actually helpful and she also puts practice exams online that are relatively similar to the actual exams given in class.
Jessica makes the looming cloud of CHM 104 seem like an easy task. She makes the notes understandable, and reviews more complex material. She truly wants every student to get a 4.0, and she even gives extra credit to compensate for the lab grades. Quizzes are straight forward and she will never try to trick you. Random attendance for extra credit.
Koppen is seriously the best professor to take for chemistry. She explains everything so well and does a lot of sample problems to make sure you get it. Cares about her students and wants them to do well. Gives practice tests to help with tests. Very straight forward questions. Homework is not mandatory but helps a lot. Grade is quizzes test& final
She was so awesome!! Even though I decided to change my major, she was still the best professor I've ever had! On the day of finals I got in a car accident and she was so understanding!! Such a great lady :)
I have had Professor Koppen for Chem 104 as an online student, and she is AMAZING. Will go above and beyond to help explain material if you would not understand. Extra credit it available for a few things in the semester. Quizzes are given once a week open from Friday-Sunday so it gives you time to complete. Homework is encouraged but never due.
Koppen is an amazing professor. If it is just passing the class you are worried about there is nothing to fear, and getting a 4.0 is not extraordinarily difficult either. There is no better chemistry teacher to have. My only issue with her is that her quizzes and tests arent very long, so there is very little room for error.
Super nice and great at explaining things! She posts a lot of helpful things on Moodle, too, like practice exams/practice questions. Take advantage of them - they help your grade a ton!
Great teacher! Would definitely take her again. Like the way she grades
She goes through a TON of examples, and her grading scale is super lenient (90% for a 4.0--not that you'd need it, she makes it so easy that I had 103%). She welcomes questions and is super nice. Definitely take her!!
Professor Koppen's lectures might be super long, but she's such a sweetheart and really cares about her students. I definitely would recommend her as a professor because she really helps you understand the material, from recording the lecture, to giving out optional homework. Koppen is an awesome teacher and I would definitely recommend her!
This professor was OUTSTANDING! Would highly recommend her to anyone who needs to take Chemistry. Very passionate, always willing to go the extra mile with her students! She took the time to explain everything into detail, and was very compassionate. Out of my four years at OU I've never appreciated or respected a teacher until I took her! THANK U!
Koppen tries to make the subject the least difficult possible. She will work them out in front of the class until she feels that everyone understands. Homework and practices aren't mandatory but are very helpful to do anyways. She will insist that her practice exams are very similar to the exams but I've found the exams to be much harder.
I LOVE PROFESSOR KOPPEN! She is beyond my favorite professor. She gives helpful power point presentations, helpful (not graded) homework, fair quizzes and exams, and extra credit sign in sheets. She truly cares about your grade and will go out of her way to ensure you do great. I'm taking her again for CHM 201 and can't wait. I highly recommend!
Orgo is a very difficult class but Koppen really wants to see all of her students do well so she goes above and beyond and makes many resources available, if you put in the time and effort (which is a lot) it will reflect in your grade. She is an amazing professor
Professor Koppen is AMAZING! She is by far one of my favorite professors at Oakland University. She responds to emails and questions right away, and is ALWAYS there to help her students. She gives a lot of extra credit, and posts practice problems for every chapter and exam! Best Chemistry teacher for 104 and 201! Highly recommend to all students:)
Koppen is a really great at explaining things. She's super clear in her lectures, and she will always take your questions if you have them. The only problem is her homework and practice problems aren't similar to her quizzes and tests, which makes them really difficult. Reading the book really helps tho.
KOPPEN IS THE BEST. I had her for CHM 104 and 201. She was so funny, very helpful, always around for questions and always replies to e-mails. One of the smartest professors I have ever had. CHM 201 is hard and requires a lot of effort on your part but she will supply you with everything you need to succeed. TAKE HER!
Great lecturer. This is a hard class to take but that it not her fault at all. She does her best at explaining the concepts. If you're struggling at all, she will help you. Her reviews aren't really like the tests but the concepts stay the same. She does take a lot of extra credit if you show up to class. She definitely wants everyone to succeed.
Sweetest prof at OU. Class is very difficult, not her fault though. She does a great job of translating the material and offering help outside of class. She has so many students and work on her plate I truly don't know how she does it. offers extra credit points for showing up to class (which are VERY helpful!!!) passionate and knowledgeable!
Koppen has a very lenient grading scale and gives random extra credit for attendance. The key to a good grade in this class is to print the notes and read the chapter before her lecture. The homework is helpful and so are the practice exams yet they only guide your studying for her exams and quizzes. Great professor, just a really hard class.
Koppen is the best professor I've ever had. She tries her best to make an extremely hard subject bearable. She provides a lot of practice problems which aren't mandatory to do and also offers extra credit for attendance. The quizzes and exams can be very tricky, but if you do the practice problems you will do fine. She also drops the lowest quiz.
Prof. Koppen is one of the best teachers I have taken! She is so sweet and cares about her students a lot. She wanted all of us to do go and it is very apparent in the way she teaches. Organic and biochemistry is tough but she tries her best to communicate it to us in a way we will understand it better.
I loved having Koppen for chemistry! She explains everything very well. She is super nice and funny and you can tell she really cares about her students. It's a hard class in general so it's a lot of work. Do the homework and study guides! I wouldn't take this class with anyone else.
Prof Koppen really cares about the students and tries really hard to make the class easier! Lectures aren't bad, easy to follow along with. Everything on exams are on lectures and she makes practice exams. Never really used book
Amazing professor, hard material.
Prof. Koppen has done an excellent job explaining and clarifying concepts that we are learning in class. She gives multiple examples and is happy to answer questions in class but especially during her office hours. You can tell she cares about her students and wants them to do well and she inspires you to enjoy chemistry.
Jessica Koppen is such an amazing professor. She makes her lectures super easy to understand & writes out problems with you. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She gives out a lot of attendance extra credit so if you go to class then youll get free points. Your worst quiz grade will be removed.
She cares about her students and does everything she can for you! Extra credit points for coming to class. Quizzes and exams are your only grades but study her PowerPoints and homework and you'll do great. I would recommend to all!
I took this professor for Chem 104 and 201. Jessica, as a whole, was a really good professor who cared about her students and was knowledgeable of Chemistry. However, I felt that her exams were way tougher than she prepared us for. They didn't really match the lectures. I think she expected us to understand more than we really did.
The best Chemistry professor at OU 100%. The only downfall is that exams and quizzes are the only grades, and they are very few questions so 1 wrong on a quiz is a B. She is the sweetest and replies so fast to e-mails. I've taken her for 104 and 201 and there isn't a professor I'd recommend more.
If you are pre-nursing, take CHM1040 with this professor. If you put in half an effort you shouldn't have trouble. She doesn't try to over complicate the material. Going to lecture will only help you and she will through hints on what might be on the test and quizzes. Their is no better professor at OU. Hands Down TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
She was a great professor. She goes over difficult concepts many times to help you understand them. She gives you helpful examples as well as old test materials to study for the new test. Everything comes from the lectures, so you really do not need to use the book unless it helps you personally. She tells you exactly what you need to know.
Professor Koppen really does care about her students passing and does her best to help. The downside is I would always get 90-100% on her practice exams/reviews/homework (not graded) and somehow end up with Cs on actual exams. You have to get 100% on quizzes to get an A. 1 wrong answer and youre stuck with B. 2 wrong and youre stuck with a C.
Take another professor if you are looking to pass this class with an A. She is very nice- BUT she is very poor at instructions. She goes over the content, but includes only the most complicated scenarios and problems on her exams and quizzes- making them nearly impossible to get a decent grade on. Only redeeming factor is the curve on the final
I have mixed feelings about her. I took a general intro to chem class with her and I really liked her, but taking her for organic chem was different. I know that organic is supposed to be challenging, but even after studying for hours multiple days a week, I still received barely passing grades, as did most of my class.
Would not recommend taking this professor. Challenging material which I get, but professor made it impossible to get a good grade on the quizzes and tests because they the practice problems didn't match what was on them. Professor wasn't helpful when i went to office hours to ask questions and the exams/quizzes are the only grades.
You could study for hours on end, feel 100% prepared and confident that you know everything until you take quiz/exam, which are like a slap in face! Each question is also worth around 5 points, so if you get one wrong you automatically go down a few percentages :( very frustrating and unfair since thats the only thing your grade is based off of.
Don't understand why there's even a single negative comment about this prof.. I've had her for 2 semesters and she is singlehandedly the best prof. Course is very challenging, so is Orgo. But she does an incredible job teaching, is very passionate, and truly cares. Provides study guides, audios, everything she can to help. You just have to care/try
In my opinion she is a great individual as a person and a great teacher/professor as well. Lectures cover the basics and she does as many examples as possible in class. The student must understand the CONCEPT for organic chem in order to pass and do well. Many helpful materials are available to 4.0 the class (HW, SI, office hours, tutors).
Awesome Professor. Always struggled with chemistry but did really well in both CHM 2010 and CHM 1040. Very informative and has great lectures. Hard material but teaches extremely well. Gives EC for being there (random days). Will help you out in any way she can. I can't speak highly enough of Professor Koppen
I love Professor Koppen. Chem lectures can be brutal but she makes them bareable. Very funny and passionate about this subject. This is a very tough class and I didnt get the grade I wanted but It wasnt because of the professor. Definitely take her!
Overall, she's a great person, and I don't want to be someone that blames others for doing poorly in the class, but I do think she was a little unfair with her exams. I always thought I had a solid understanding of each chapter but then felt like none of the exams matched. I get her grading scale is easier, but I just don't think it was fair.
AMAZING prof. very understanding and always willing to help. difficult class, but she is always fair. super nice. best prof I have had.
If you're taking this class for passing grade, she is an excellent prof and explains the material well. but if you're taking this class to achieve a 3.8 of higher good luck. She asks extremely tricky questions on exams and quizzes. I honestly felt like her test was bullying me it was so hard. Her exams are way too hard to get a good grade.
I took both chemistry 1040 and 2010. Both were challenging in their own way. Chem 2010 was more challenging for me because I had to think and learn in a different way than what I was accustomed to. What I would recommend is to think very carefully before signing up for chem 2010 and ask yourself if this is something you will be willing to commit to
Great teacher, Tough class. Study guides rarely helped with exams. Lectures were awesome, additionally she records lectures to watch too which was huge for me! Class is near impossible to fail if you put in a good effort. Only downside I would say is that the only grades for this class are exams and quizzes. Would Highly recommend
Really good professor! Grades are based on quizzes and exams, but she gives you optimal homework with practice problems and helpful study guides. The exams are not hard if you know the material and use the resources she provides. She also give extra credit for attendance and on exams and quizzes. Don't buy the book. 10/10 recommend as a prof.
Koppen is such an amazing professor! She cares so much about her students. She gives extra credit from attendance, & homework is optional on Moodle. She also drops your lowest quiz & exam grade. Shes young and understands the struggles of college & trys her best to help all her students! I recommend her for Organic chem, dont take anyone else!!
She was by far the best professor I had this year. I had her for CHM1040 and CHM2010. Her lectures are straight forward-- she will tell what she wants you to know for her exams. Her tests are tricky, but that goes for any class, it's college. She does a lot of examples, which are always helpful. She wants you to do well and will help you!
Amazing professor! By far one of the best I have ever had. CHM 2010 is hard, especially taking it in the summer, but she really does what she can to ensure her students undersatnd and pass. She is a great person. I had some family issues in the beginning of the semester and she really worked with me. She wants her students to pass!
If you do not take Koppen for chemistry you are crazy. She is hands down the best professor. I would take her classes over and over if I could. Lectures are VERY clear and wants everyone to do well and understand all the material. Do all the homework, go to the book when confused or ask her and she will be happy to help! Got a 4.0 in this class.
Take her! she really cares about her student success. It's a very tough class. She also gives points for extra credit and a 904.0! Practice practice, ask question where you do not understand and you will do great!
She is honestly one of the best professors I've had at ou. She is very helpful and cares about her students. Her lectures are straight forward and doing the homework is beneficial. Quizzes/exams can be a little tricky but they aren't too bad.
She is such an amazing teacher, she explains things to the class very well. I love how she takes the time to explain each piece of information in her powerpoint. TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE
Really enjoyed Dr. Koppen. Super funny and caring of ALL her students. Great instructor and a very fair grader. 10/10
Koppen is by far the best professor I have ever had. She really relates to the students regarding struggles... so she really makes everything as clear and as easy as possible. I recommend taking her 10/10.
Professor Koppen is by far the greatest professor I have ever had. She cares so much for her students and is an excellent teacher. She is so down to earth and is always there for her students. Awesome instructor, I would take her classes a million times if I could.
I was very anxious taking this class from hearing rumors about it. Professor Koppen made this class so fun, and broke everything down. She is by far the BEST professor I have ever had! She is always there for her students and truly wants you to do well. I got a 4.0 !
she is a great teacher! the class is hard as is most chemistry classes so you do have to put in the work but she explains things very well, wants everyone to succeed and gives ample extra credit. make sure you do the homework and practice tests she gives you because those really help!
Professor Koppen is amazing! She made attending an 8 a.m. Chemistry class engaging! She is also available outside of class, so if you have any questions, she is willing to help out. She also gives out extra credit for attending class, so take advantage of it! I would recommend doing her homework problems as practice for exams; they really help.
Dr. Koppen is one of the best professors I've ever had. The class was an easy A since I had 3 years of prior chem experience, but if I didn't have any chem knowledge, she would be the teacher I'd want. She's thorough and never leaves anything up in the air about what to know for quizzes/exams. Stop reading reviews now and just take her class.
I took CHEM 1040 online and I definitely recommend taking it with Koppen. She is very thorough in her lectures and I've honestly learned more from her than every other chem professor I've had at OU. Definitely take her!
Professor Kopek is great!!! Highly recommend anyone to take it with her! She really teaches the material well and goes in depth. She is funny and makes class interesting. Btw she gives a lot of extra credit!! I have over 100% in orgo right now and really understand the content. Take her!!!
Koppen was an amazing professor! She really wanted to help us understand Chemistry, so she would rewrite her power points in more understandable words. While some people say her wording can be hard to understand on quizzes or tests, as long as you know your stuff you should be good. She also gave extra credit to help boost our grades.
Best chem professor at OU!!! She really explains every concept in depth. Exams have some trick questions, so read carefully. Do the optional homework and the quizzes and exams will be easy. She always curves, even with the final. Final is the ACS version. Sometimes EC for attendance; so always attend to not miss it. Taking her next semester again!
I took her last semester for gen chem and have her again this semester for organic. She is a fantastic professor and I would take her again if I could. Great lectures, and though the exams are tough it's worth it.
I love Professor Koppen. She has good lectures and tells you exactly what you need to know for the quizzes and tests. You don't necessarily need to attend lecture, but make sure you attend for quizzes and exams. She gives you practice problems like what you'll see on the exam and will answer any questions that you have. I highly recommend her.
She is a very caring professor who wants to help us understand organic chemistry.
The class is composed of 5 quizzes and she drops the lowest, midterm, labs, and a final. The exams are a bit tricky so you really need to do the homework problems to understand everything. Listen to her lectures and take notes or else it makes the class 10 times harder. Overall, she's very straightforward of what she expects and wants the best.
her class is not too hard. the biggest piece of advice i can give is to start studying EARLY! you cannot start studying a chapter a few days before an exam/quiz. it takes a while to process and the material is so dense, so my advice if you want to do good in this class is to start studying early. she lays out what to know/provides study guides.
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken between my dual enrollment classes and this semester at college. She gives no homework to help study. In her lectures she just rambles about random things and does very little teaching. She blames the class for failing when she doesn't teach. I had her during the pandemic and she didn't do lectures.
Dr. Koppen is a great professor and she's really smart. Her lecture videos can go on for a long time because she tends to repeat herself, but it reinforces the more difficult topics. The class is only quiz and exam grades (homework is not graded), so make sure you DO THE HOMEWORK and study up for tests. I can't stress that enough. Do the homework!!
Dr. Koppen is a great chemistry teacher, just not great teaching online. She is available for meets if you schedule them, and she is one of the friendliest professors at Oakland. For me personally, a professor just reading words off slides is not a lecture, there needs to be more explanation behind it. Although, her extra videos helped a bit.
Koppen is great!! Take her if you can. she provides as many resources as possible. Pay attention to study guides she posts. Class was challenging, do as many practice problems as you can.
Professor Koppen is very nice.
i took chm 2010 with professor koppen! shes great. shes so nice and truly cares. she is always available to help if youre confused. She also offers a good amount of extra credit. pay attention to her study gudies she posts. take her, shes amazing!!!
Professor Koppen was a good professor. She gave extra credit once in the semester but other than that that class was only graded on graded on 4 quizzes, 3 exams and a final. Her exams are not easy so don't expect this class to be a breeze but her recorded lectures were extremely helpful and she made organic chemistry actually interesting.
Loved her as a professor, she has amazing lectures, homework and study guides. However, the grade is based fully on assessments and the exams can be tricky. She likes to put more than one correct response on a ton of questions, so you really have to know the material. If you take her class, look at the notes on the study guide! Wish we had labs.
Loved Koppen and her lectures! If you take this class and are taking CHM2010 after, make sure to pay attention to the acids + bases chapters! I loved how she presented the material, but the exams can be a bit tricky so make sure you do the study guides and homework problems! Overall I think that the class is doable but pay attention to the details!
I took Koppen last year from 1040/2010. she is great!! TAKE her. pay attention to practice quizzes/exams she posts, very similar setup to exams and quizzes. pay attention to her additional videos as well. I dont remember any EC but she curves the final a lot which makes up for it. shes amazing, take her if you can!!
Let me say this, Professor Koppen is a great professor! Chemistry can be a very difficult subject to learn, but Koppen goes into every concept with great detail. Follow her lectures well and practice the work. If you do, your grade will easily show it. Some advice, learn how to dimensional analysis before the class, it will help so much!
Her exams are more difficult than they should be, especially her final exam but overall she's super sweet and really loving. Its an easy A / A-, I just screwed it up.
Professor Koppen really is a great professor. She gave multiple extra credit opportunities and curved the final which ultimately gave everyone 35 extra points. The only problem is there is so much information to learn in a short amount of time. If you fall behind it will hurt, so use the tutoring center, office hours, and SI!!!
LOVED HER. super nice and is passionate about chemistry. Her lectures made everything make sense. GO TO THEM. The grades were based on weekly assignments and if you looked over the notes and are pretty confident, you'll do good on those. I would recommend her for chemistry.
Professor Koppen was great! I can't wait to take organic next semester with her! My only complaint was the final, which, in my opinion had way too many specific questions on random material. It's hard to study all the conceptual stuff, when we basically focused on math the entire semester. Overall, she is great and really cares!
Professor Koppen is my favorite professor. You can tell she is very passionate about chemistry which makes learning very easy. She posts practice exams before every exam. She offers extra credit after almost every exam. She posts all of her lectures and notes on line and is very organized.
I did not do well on the first two exams and then I got a tutor to help me through the material but Professor Koppen has excellent videos and lectures. She's extremely thorough and adheres to her syllabus. You know exactly what to expect and she offers extra credit. She's also super lovely and nice. Excited to take her organic chem class next!
Koppen is a really good professor. Her class is organized and there is so many extra videos she makes to help. She provides so many opportunities to practice and review before the exams. She emails back so fast and is always ready to help.
this is the second time I took chem with her due to not getting a 3.0 and she was an amazing prof. whenever I had a question that I sent through email she responded within an hour and with good detail helping out. I went to her review sessions for my final and she was very helpful. The final is usually curved. as long as you do work you will pass.
Shes a very sweet and caring professor and it definitely seems like she wants everyone to do their best and is very passionate. Reading the book isnt necessary, and isnt even worth buying. She breaks everything down so clearly in lectures and goes over things multiple times, as well as additional videos to help. Definitely recommend taking her.
The class was hybrid with recitation on Thursday mornings. She will always offer zooms out of school hours, and she is there to help you pass. Will do extra credit if it helps most of the class, she wants to see you pass, so if you need help, ask for it.
Her lectures in person weren't helpful, the things she would go over would be stuff she already covered on moodle. which her weekly material was 3+ hours long. quizzes were weekly and she helped us with those. The only thing you have to worry about is the exams. They are difficult and short so even a couple wrong and your grade will go down.
An average of 2+ hours of lecture videos per week, plus additional videos. your grade is based on 12 hw assignments( which she goes over in recitation) and 4 exams which she curves . This class was fine, but it would of been better if she didn't just read off and rewrite her notes. She needs a little more supplemental resources.
This class is not easy by any means, and just watching her lectures will get you nowhere. However, her extra hw problems and additional lecture notes, are so helpful. She is more than willing to help you pass and cares so much. Her exams are extremely hard, but her additional notes helped more than anything else.
The class is made up of 4 tests, one being the final. There is also 1 assignment every week. You have to try hard on the assignments to save your grade. The tests are hard and there is a ton of lecture material and notes. If you go to class, she will most likely give you the answers to the assignment of the week, which is so nice.
I took this as a 7 week online course. The class only has 570 points and 450 is tests. Her tests are VERY difficult but her additional videos, lectures and homework do help. She does give extra credit and curves the final a few points but this class was tough and at the same time I would take her again if I had to take another chem class.
I had to retake this course and took it the second time with professor Koppen in person. She is a great professor, especially because this is such a hard course. If you attend her class and watch her additional video lectures, you will do good. There are quizzes, three exams, and one final. I recommend taking her for this class.
She is willing to go over practice problems in class and gives an outline of what the tests will look like but she doesn't follow schedule and had to push parts of chapters to another test because she didn't finish the material in time.
She is very kind and funny and makes sure everyone understands the topic. Spends a lot of time teaching and posts lectures online which is very beneficial. She has only one quiz per chapter and no homework. I wish she gave more assignments for practice and for grade to go up.
She cares a lot about her students. Just be transparent with her, you will see it pays off in the end. Exams are super hard, study well for them.
I was nervous to take chem, but Koppen made it much more digestible. Her lectures were clear and she was accessible outside class. She provides lot's of practice problems, and if you don't understand something, she'll explain it different ways until you get it. She never made me feel too dumb to be in a chemistry class; I'd recommend her to anyone!
Lectures were very long and boring. One 10 question homework assignment each week, that are kind of difficult. There are 3 exams and a final. Exams are hard and proctored. Has a virtual lab that is somewhat difficult.
The professor is a very nice person but her lectures are extremely slow until she realizes that she is behind and then she speeds through the notes for the rest of the chapter. Her exams all consist of 25 questions and each one has a "more than one correct response" choice. Passing exams is essential in order to pass.
She returns exams very fast. I had to miss an exam because I got into a car accident on the way, and she was very helpful. I was really struggling because of a family member's death, and she helped ensure that I passed. Her exams are very short and nearly every question has both "multiple correct answers" and "no correct answers" as options.
I respect professor Koppen but during lecture she would go off topic and talk a lot about her personal life, causing students to lose focus (including me). Her assignments are easy and she gives you 2 attempts. Very understanding if you forgot to complete assignment etc.
Amazing professor. So caring and wants her students to succeed. Dr Koppen wants you to ask questions either in class or via email. If you take her in person and can't make a lecture, prerecorded lectures and additional helpful videos are posted on Moodle. SUPER hard class but she makes it bearable!
I was blessed to have her for both Orgo AND Gen Chem. She breaks everything down, posts a lot of lecture videos and practice exams, and wants everyone to succeed. Perfect example of what professors should be doing. Super quirky and cracks lots of jokes. She truly cares about her students well-being and I would 100% have her for a professor again.
She was very difficult, I read all good reviews and I took her class. But she honestly did not break anything down and you'd be better off reading the textbook and watching crash course. She doesn't give extra credit and barely curves, I was .2% away from the B- I needed and she said too bad (pretty much).
Professor K is an absolute angel. She's so sweet and really cares about her students. She responds to email quickly. She offers a lot of extra credit and puts 2 attempts on homework so you are guaranteed 100%. Exams are hard but that's chemistry. Her reviews are extremely similar to the exams. Lectures are not mandatory as she posts them online.
she cares and supports everyone. bunch of extra credit and curves. its really hard to fail with her. requires studying but she works with students and doesnt want anyone to fail. she is so funny and i wish more professors were like her
She is a very nice lady but overwhelming at times. The tests are very similar to the study guilds. The videos she posts are very helpful.
Pretty good professor, she is very kind, class wasn't difficult although sometimes she would try to make something really simple which complicates it. Anyways great professor I recommend her to anyone in need of this class.
Professor Koppen was very helpful and kind. Exams are a large chunk of your grade, but if you are struggling, she is always willing to go out of her way to help during office hours and after class. If you miss class she always has lecture videos posted as well, which was really helpful for me when I missed class one week because I was sick.
Absolute angel of a woman who cares about her students and is passionate about chemistry. Attend her lectures and use all of the resources she provides you with and you will do great.
PROS: Extremely caring. Wants you to succeed. Good availability via email/office hours. Lots of OPTIONAL learning material: recorded lectures, recordings going through problems, lots of practrice questions.
PROS: No required textbook. Provides LOTS of extra, optional review material: recorded lectures, recordings of her working through practice problems, and LOTS of practice problems. Genuinely cares if you succeed. Available via email/office hours outside of class w/ quick responses. Highly recommend, I found a new love for chemistry thanks to her.
I loved having professor Koppen! She is such an outgoing person and actually wants her students to understand and succeed in her class. She does plenty of practice problems in class and has so much extra material posted online for studying purposes. She is the sweetest person if you attend office hours and is so so patient with you.
Please take Professor Koppen! She is so supportive and understanding of your personal goals for the course. There are three exams, and if you do the practice exams, assignments and ask for help at office hours, you will do great! I had a few life events that lowered my grade but she was understanding of that. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND ATTEND CLASS
She is the absolute most amazing professor ever. She is so caring about her students, she wants you to succeed. She explains everything in in-depth detail and will show you what's important to know for your tests. She does pre labs with you and she is always willing to help. I LOVE this woman. Such a sweetheart. She made me actually enjoy chem.
Professor K is truly a gem - so supportive and understanding. With practice exams, office hours, and helpful online resources, you can ace this class. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for my study prep too!
She's a nice lady but not a good professor. Our class averages were always under 70% and she would get upset with us because she claims they are fair exams. She offered extra credit after every exam but it was only bc everyone did so poorly. Her exams are MUCH harder than her homework and the problems she does in class.
The first two exams are straightforward, but the third is more challenging. Attendance at lectures is optional but helpful, and she has extra videos on the lectures we learned. Each exam has about 25 questions, which can be tricky with options like "two or more answers can be correct" and "none are correct." extra credit is given on some exams.
All I can say about Prof. K is that she is awesome. Her teaching style is great, she always made sure to be clear about what is on tests and not. She writes tests to form what she has taught and there is one homework assignment per chapter. Showing up to lecture really helps your understanding. Provides practice exams which did me wonders too!
She genuinely cares and is so willing to work with students. If you did bad in this course, I'm sorry but you did not study or pay attention. Chemistry is all about practice and she gives you practice tests and assignments that all correlate directly to what is on the Exams. I wish I had her for organic chem. Also just a very friendly professor!
She really wants everyone to succeed! Her classes aren't mandatory, and she posts all of her lectures online with extra practice problems. A lot of this information was a repeat from high school, so I would just watch the lecture videos online, but for some of the new stuff, I found going to class helpful and her teaching easy to understand.
She was very goof and clearly cares a lot about her students. However she tends to over complicate things which even she is aware of. Would take again
Prof. is a very sweet teacher, and I would 100% take her again. Her class is very simple if you study your notes. She posts all of her lectures on Moodle, provides EC opportunities, her quizzes are only 25 questions, and she curves the final exam.
Take Professor Koppen she is funny and her class is fairly easy as a freshman! She is super nice and willing to work with you happily if you need help. Total of 11 online quizzes that you can use notes on and gives extra credit if class average of a test is low. Total of 4 exams including final and lab with this class is easy. Only 4 labs in total!
TAKE HER!!! I love Professor Koppen. She really did everything in her power to make sure her students succeeded and she provided various opportunities for extra credit. Her lectures and what she goes over during them are very similar and helpful towards the exams. She is very caring, understanding and made me enjoy being in class.
had her for chem and orgo and was able to end both classes with 100%, gives extra credit and her exams are like practice questions. amazing professor and explains content well if you meet with her during office hours. The best professor I have had at OU by far.
Really great professor! Had her for 1040 & 2010. Going to class isn't mandatory but it will benefit you. She slides in hints and tricks that she doesn't post with the online notes. As long as you put in the work, you will pass. It's not easy but she makes it as easy as possible
I had Professor Koppen for Chem 1040, as well as 2010. She is such an amazing professor. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students and the course. If I had an option to take her again in the future, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. She is amazing. Such a great teacher and person.
If you are a nursing student TAKE HER extremely kind and cares that all of her students learn as long as you go to lecture, study and do ur work you'll be fine This is just a hard class And go to her office hours Hw is minimal and gives lots of time to do it The only complaint is that she goes sorta fast w notes but she posts them
the best chemistry professor at oakland. so kind and helpful!
Professor Koppen was overall the best teacher to take for gen chem & orgo! She was super accessible outside of class and was always answering her emails! TAKE HER AS A NURSING STUDENT!! I do not have a strength in chemistry, but her classes made me end with a 99 overall and i was able to understand everything she talked about!
This class rewards effort—work hard and you'll get the grade you want. The instructor is great, but success depends on your commitment. Don't skip the supplemental videos—they're super helpful. Just attending lectures isn't enough; you need to study and practice outside of class to keep up and do well.
If you can please take prof. K, she was absolutely wonderful and goes through everything step by step in class to make sure her students have a good understanding of material. I had an amazing learning experience with her. She always shows her love for chemistry and students. Overall the course itself is difficult but prof. K made it worth it!
Prof K. was a delight to have as an introductory instructor! Not only is she detail oriented, she ensures no student is left behind. Very open discussion lectures and will stop and explain whenever a question arises, does not require the book, and explains topics in a down to earth way. Very approachable as well.
I was super nervous for this class but when Prof. Koppen started with her lectures I felt at ease. She explains things in a simple way that are easy to understand. She provides tons of practice and is always looking to answer everyone's questions. She loves what she does and it shows! Class was at 8:00am and she was always cracking jokes. Love her!
Excellent professor, she makes everything easy to understand. Provides a lot of material to understand all the topics covered, provides extra-credit opportunities, very approachable, answers emails fast, caring and classes are fun. I highly recommend her, if you can take her class you will learn and not be bored.
i loved prof koppen. she really cares for her students and wants them to pass. there are four exam (the last being the final). def start studying a few days early. i had trouble with the second exam the most. lots of EC and only 11 homework assignments
TAKE HER gave lot of EC, explains VERY WELL. Class content hard bc its orgo so if u didnt pass it was bc u didnt understand (its ok) OR u didnt care about class/didnt do EC. Bc even if u did bad on exams she gave lot of EC! Her prac exams r similar to real exam and she prepare u well. She even extend due dates bc knws we r stressed w/other classes.
Koppen was my favorite professor. Her tests are pretty easy and very similar to her practice tests. She explains everything really well and makes sure everyone understand. I 100% recommend.
Shes the nicest teacher I had at OU and very down to earth. She breaks things down for comprehension. Her lectures are great but the class in general is hard. 11 assignments, 4 exams (counting final), barely any extra credit.
I really liked her! She really wanted every student to pass. She would write notes along with her lecture to help us understand more. Her exams are pretty straightforward, and they're just like the practice tests. Study every day and make sure you understand the material from each lecture, it builds up. Cumulative final is difficult.
i really liked Professor koppen she was suchhh a queen she made this class so easy she really knows how to make things understandable!! i think the worst part about this class was the lab tbh i didn't do too great in it and it brought my grade down but she didn't teach the lab. i'm so glad i have her for Orgo next semester she is a great professor!
