She is a great teacher. She really engages the class and knows her subject. She is passionate about writing. Jessica is really cute too and a great dresser (hey, I'm gay).
Worst english class I ever had to take. The woman is unhelpful, stuck up, and overly-educated. Yes, it's *DR* JESSICA MAGNANI. All you EVER do in class is analyze stories. Yes, every day for 1:15 mins you analyze the meanings of a story you were assigned before. It's like your 9th grade ENG I class. Horrible. Def do not recommend.
This teacher is like a snake in the grass. She will give you a smile and then when its time to give grades, she lets her vinem out. She is not a good teacher at all. She is more phony than any person that I have ever met. She is not helpful. She is very stuck on herself. She wants things to be perfect. I do not recommend. Don't waist your money!!!!
I took her for Comp II HONORS, and thought she was wonderful. It was also her first semester at our school. Maybe people find it difficult because they are college students and can't spell "venom" correctly, which would show in their work. Great teacher, hot, helpful and works with you. I got an A.
I LOVED her class. She encouraged critical thinking skills. She was very clear on her expectations. My guess is the unhappy students were the ones who skipped out after break and who did more side talking then work. She offers lots of extra help- if you are willing to put in the effort. I would highley recommend this class
Amazing teacher, I liked that she anaylized pieces of work. She did get angry when people had side conversations, but that's all teachers. She really helped me out too and would discuss my papers with me after class. I would recommend her!
She's a good instructor, willing to help and varily simple grader. She stresses grammar. She does allow class discussion on essays read. Goes by syllabus so you always know what to expect. She tells you exactly what she wants when it comes to writing essays.
I took her for Comp II Honors-- thought it was a rather difficult class, five short responses, two-five paged essays, and one eight to ten paged research paper--all of which are based on the text. But, overall she is a wonderful professor--very helpful!!! :)
GREAT TEACHER and I enjoyed her class =)
She is great. She doesn't like people who are loud, obnoxious, cell phone ringing. I don't blame her, those people ruin class for everyone. When not being bothered by bad students, she was breaking down the literary works, explaining the meaning. Very good prof.
I simply breezed right through this class. People here saying she is stuck on herself, i didnt experience any of that - you have to respect a profs education..they are the prof. you are not. She tells you exactly what she wants to see..if you pay attention you will do just fine.
Fantastic!
Prof. Magnani is nothing short of inspirational. I have had her for Comp. I Hon, Comp. II Hon., and World Lit. I Hon. I have yet to receive a grade lower than "A" in her class. If you need help--she's there. If emotionally you are struggling--she is there. Anyone would be a fool not to take her. She is extremely bright and engaging. TAKE HER.
Shes is easy but a stickler on papers and grades. If you dont get her attention the first few days she hates you. Wrote a paper, got a F on it because i didnt site one sentence....come on? If you are shy and dont feel the need to talk when learning, then do not take her. Calls you out in class and makes you look like a fool. Same stuff everyday
She didn't show up for the first two or three lectures and I felt as if the assignments were irrelevant and not very interesting. I decided this class wasn't for me and dropped it and I'm very happy with my new Composition II class that I'm currently enrolled in.
Very helpful, very understanding. Clear with directions.
I took her for Comp 2 and at first I didnt like her teaching style, but after a while I really enjoyed her class. I really struggled with this class, but she was very helpful whenever I asked any questions.
Comp 1, papers have to be 4-5 pages, final 6-8 pages, your rough drafts are peer reviewed, alot of analyzing short stories, work in groups to answer questions about short stories. She goes by syllabus. If you do not mind this stuff then take her.
A lot of what she says goes right over my head so I could not understand some things she meant. So if you get confused easily then do not take her. If you don't like to speak out and express her self then you will not enjoy this class. She is very smart and is a great teacher, but she was just not for me.
This lady is a whack job!! She has so many degrees that she just assumes everyone should know what the hell she talks about. If its not the answer she wants to hear your wrong. If your not advanced in writing it is not good enough. She teaches World Lit and 1102 and one 1101 class I think she is teaching us 1102 I would not recommend her!!
Be prepared to read, write and discuss in class. It is, after all, the purpose of taking it. She is informative and very helpful when you ask. She will expect you to follow MLA and stresses this whenever you write an essay/paper to be turned in. If she feels no one is reading, she will give a quiz. Would definitely take her again.
This professor is amazing! I took her for comp 1 and chose her again for LIT2110. She's very helpful & willing to assist you when needed. Do the reading & participate in class & you will have no problem passing. She requires use of MLA format for all essays. I will recommend her to anyone who is looking for a great professor!
Not enjoyable at all. I sit there and she expects us to know what the writings are about. Hey I'm only supposed to come to class, not enjoy it. You have to really take notes about what she thinks about the writings or else you will be lost on how to write the papers. It's either her way or the highway.
DR. MAGNANI IS A GREAT TEACHER, SHE IS HIGHLY INTELLIGENT AND ASSISTS IN ANY WAY SHE CAN, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! AND SHE IS GORGEOUS!
Rude and not helpful at all. Never checks emails and offers to assist even after class. oh and dont bring your laptop no allowed to use in class.
She is ok. The class is a little boring. There is a fair amount of homework. The final is 8 pages! She will give you a chance to submit and correct your work before the final grade is applied.
Never knew when she graded stuff, and when she does, she grades hard without much feedback. I only used the Norton Intro to Lit book although another book was recommended. If I were you, don't buy the Little, Brown Handbook. Didn't enjoy the class, but composition is not my favorite subject.
She waits to grade your work til the very end of the week. Do NOT take her online. The highest grade i got(A) in her class was on a few short story multiple choice test. Other than that she loves giving C grades.
She's a very tough grader and expects you to be able to at least to a grad level, so if you are not into writing too much would not recommend. She has a Doctorate in Literature so her expectations are extremely high!!
I took Professor Magnani for Comp 1 and 2 online. She is a pretty easy going teacher. She gives samples of her past students work to help guide you on your papers. She will help you, but make sure you email her early enough because she is a little slow on responding and grading. Other than that not a bad teacher.
Class was organized, the quizzes, Mid-term and Final are very easy. The essays on the other hand were a bit of a challenge, probably because it was a short summer semester, didn’t have much time. Dr. Magani was helpful. if you email her later in the afternoon, she’ll respond the next day. So all in all, I do recommend her.
Dr. Magnani takes the time to go over all poems and stories read so that you are fully prepared for your papers. You are also allowed to edit two of the papers to get a better grade after you receive feedback. Mid-term was easy. You aren't writing a paper every single week so you aren't overwhelmed with homework.
One of the hardest classes I've ever take! Enjoyed the subject, but if I could of taken it with someone else I would have. She treats us as if we are a Comp class. We aren't, I know how to write don't teach me that teach me African American Literature! She's nice till you don't understand something or don't do what she wants. SO MANY PAPERS!
She is very sweet and will help any way she can. I had her once a week for the 2hr and 40min lectures and it was killer. She is a very tough grader, dust off your MLA format books bc she marks off for very small details. She does curve your final grade though. 1 big research paper on lit as final which is 30% of grade. Class was a bit stressful.
Dr. Magnani is tough. She expects her students to write a perfect paper, to they way she thinks it should be wrote to give an A. You will definitely work in her class.
Very tough professor. It is more about her own ideas than letting you express your own interpretation of the reading. Very tough grader. I would not recommend her
Tough grader. Not flexible at all.
I took Professor Magnani's class online. She was very helpful with any questions that I had, and always responded promptly to emails. Some papers were challenging, but I enjoyed them. This online course had 2 quizzes and discussions posts due every week; it was challenging.
A lot of reading and a lot of writing.
She expects people to write the essays the way any great English major would. If you don't write it the way she wants you to there will be no A's not even a B she is one of the worst teachers I have ever had.
The first half of the class you read stories/take quizzes on them and write a paper. The second half you watch two films, chose one, and write a research paper on it. You will need the book to be able to do the first half of the class work. She will NEVER give you a 100% on anything, even if you deserve it. She contradicts herself sometimes too.
If you're taking ENC 1102 in the summer term -- be prepared to do a lot of work. The first week, you'll have one quiz and 2 discussion board assignments. After that, it will be one discussion and 2 quizes based on the readings (10-25 pages ea) There are two papers. Do your work and don't fall behind and you'll get at least a B. The Class was hard.
You read A LOT of stories then take quizzes and do discussion posts on them. She expects your papers to be perfect and done the way she wants them. Worst class I have ever taken.
Hardest teacher I ever taken. I am a straight A student and international student. She expects a lot from you, has to be perfect. She doesnt tell you very clear what she wants and expect you know what she wants to hear. If your paper states your opinion that doesnt match hers, she will give you a low grade. I had an F. I hate this one, with passion
I am an A+ type of student and I always pass my English classes. I have never failed an English class until I took her. She didn't help at all and I had a lot of family problems and she didn't cut any slack. She willl never ever give you an A on an assignment. There are no second chances on quizzes, you take the once and if you fail you fail. The quizzes are set for 10 minutes only and If you don't finish too bad. Her research paper is really hard too.
Dr. Magnani sets her expectations high and gives you all the tools to meet them. If you are looking for an easy "A", do not take her. If you are looking to actually learn and expand your critical thinking skills, she's your gal. I earned an "A" in her class, however, I worked my butt off for it. I am a better student for taking her class.
Dr. Magnani is a fantastic professor. She offers multiple opportunities to not only be involved with critical thinking based discussions, but also makes a point to be available for any advising you may need. Be involved, show up, and hold yourself to a higher standard to actually accomplish your work and you will reap the benefits.
Professor Magnani's Comp2 class online isn't impressive. Much of the material is based on matter of opinion. She's made several spelling errors and typos on quiz questions. I have a high B in the class, only thanks to my high scores on papers/mid term. She doesn't accept late assignments at all. It's hard to get a straight answer when seeking help.
Professor Magnani's class was one of the hardest so far, A lot of work but the instructions are not clear. The tests about short stories or poetry are timed for 10 minutes with seven questions. Its very hard class, you will put a lot of time to get a C or low B for the best case. If you looking for a high grade i highly recommended not taking her.
I took Dr. Magnani for two semesters this year for Comp I and II Honors. It is more of a discussion class on readings. There is heavy writing for Comp II but it is manageable if you are dedicated to doing your best. She is also always willing to help and very understanding. I enjoyed her class and I recommend honors to anyone who has the chance.
The first half of this class was ok, but it didn't teach much. The last half of the class you're required to watch 2 movies and write a final research paper. Her grading scale seems to be a matter of opinion of interpretation. I do well and did well in all of my other classes, but the way she grades makes things impossible.
Barely gives feedback. Will give you 0 even upon completion of work if she does not personally enjoy your work.
very hard to get a hold of when needed questions answered she is disorganized and it is vvveerryyy hard to get an A in this class. so many assignments and the book is online so if you dont live with your computer on your hip good luck.. this was the worst teacher i have ever taken i would definitely NOT recommend taking her class
I've taken Dr. Magnani for Comp and currently comp II honors If you're a good student and like reading/class discussion a lot Dr. Magnani is everything you could want in an English teacher, very logic/evidence based. If your class seems to read the material and cares, she won't even assign a single quiz. She's also very very accommodating
I am a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA. I never got a 100 on any assignment in this class, the highest I got was a 90% on a DF. I have a C right now hoping to at least get a high B. She is a very tough grader. I would not recommend her at all.
Magnani is a very liberal teacher and gives primarily liberal assignments so if you're not into that don't take her. Most of the things you do is discussions. Just speak once per class, you'll be fine. Do your papers (smarthinking). Do your work and you'll get an easy A.
In professor Magnanis class, all you do is read out of the little text book, usually it is stories about politics and educations but she gives good opinions and allows everyone to give their opinions on topics.
Dr. Magnani, is a passionate professor that truly tries to make the (3 hr class) fun and exciting. This class has a good amount of readings that you will have to discuss in class. The papers are tedious and challenging but you can redo 2 of them. The final is 20% of your grade. You truly have to work for an A in this class.
Incredibly tough grader. If she doesn't like the way a sentence sounds because she would personally word it differently, she will knock points off your paper. Minimum of 300 word paper due AT LEAST once a week. I have had two 500 word min essays due two weeks in a row. DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS.
Incredibly tough grader. Will dock points off your paper for the dumbest things. AT LEAST a minimum of 300 word paper due once a week. I have had two 500 word min essays due two weeks in a row. DOES NOT RESPOND TO EMAILS.
It is quite humbling to submit papers in this class and get lackluster grades. This instructor has the expectations as if this English class is part of a Masters' Degree curriculum. In emails sent out from this instructor there were some misspellings of words. When I saw these email mistakes I lost respect for her grading. Good course, bad teacher.
Definitely better than my Comp I professor but there was so much homework! I felt like I had a 300+ word essay due almost every week. She does give in-depth feedback, but I do feel that her grading is harsh, as if this is a high level English course. I would take her class again only if I had to. If you're good at essays (I'm not), take her class.
Dr. Magnani's AML 2010 class is very difficult and she gives a lot of homework and reading assignments. She assigns a killer amount of reading and it's all really, really dense. Also, I didn't think she was a very good grader and she doesn't give clear instructions until she sends them in an email after you've submitted and she's given you a 0.
I'm a straight-A student, I have seldom received below a 90% on just about any task I've done in my 4 years. Professor Magnani will nitpick and destroy any essay you give them, regardless of how good it is. Furthermore, the amount of writing and reading makes the class feel more like a Ph.D. Literature program than anything else.
Terrible. Hated her class. I have NO experience with literature or how to analyze. Adult student returning after 5 years. Treated me like I knew nothing or couldn't contribute rightfully. I'm not a lit or english major, just trying to get required classes out the way. She didn't make learning about American literature fun at all. Don't recommend.
I took Dr. Magnani and was blown away by how amazing the course was. I took honors to really try to improve my skills and get good feedback and my expectations were met and passed. With multiple hurricanes and storms hitting us this year, we also needed a lot of extensions or help and she was always understanding. 100% reccomend for english lovers.
I highly recommend you avoid taking classes with this professor. She will tell you to write a thesis statement of a highly archaic story you read in class in one sentence than give you a C for not supplying enough info. She will find ways to mark you down that you didn't even know you were doing wrong. There is basically no teaching involved.
I took her for Comp 1&2 Honors, and really enjoyed the discussions we had about the reading. The class is mostly discussion and papers and I got much better at writing during this class. I recommend Honors, its smaller and more intimate classes. She is funny and kind, but make sure you participate! Ive never had a problem with tough grading.
My issue was I never once received a reply when I attempted to contact her. Never once. I emailed her for an extension after a hospital trip with documentation and never heard back. I also asked for help with a research proposal paper and never heard back. That sums up my experience with her and the class.
This professor does not answer emails and is not clear with homework instructions. I would avoid taking her at all costs.
The class itself is easy you have a reading assignment and discussion each week and 4 essays. I would not take unless you are a strong writer already. She teaches by telling you what you did wrong after instead of teaching you what is expected to receive a 100. I got a 95 on an essay without any feedback of why it was not a 100.
Highly unrecommended. Highly biased grader, she will fail you if your opinion does not mirror her own. Literary analysis essays where if you don't have the exact same opinion/takeaways she will not even give you a decent grade. Takes forever to grade assignments and gives awful feedback that is neither constructive nor useful. 0/10
Highly unrecommended. Biased grader. She will fail you just because she does not agree with your opinion. Does not provide useful or constructive feedback. Lots of literary analysis essays where if your opinion does not mirror hers, she WILL fail you. "Teaches" (in the loosest form of the word) content that she is unprepared for. 0/10.
Professor Magnani didn't have the most entertaining class at all. You have to take 4 essays for the semester, last one being a research paper. If you email her about anything she never responds back! You read chapters from your textbook or online articles... if you don't read/understand anything she will make you answer questions on groups.
I enjoyed this class, we mainly read chapters from our textbook or articles and had discussions about them in class. Did 4 essays total throughout the semester, the last one counting as our final which was a persuasive research essay where we got to choose our own topic.
Extremely strict grading,70% of your grade is from 3 assignments at the end of the course, an example of this is one of the assignments is to collect research papers to use as sources, she gave me a 70% even though all the papers I had are from the schools library as approved peer reviewed papers, don't expect to pass her class avoid at all cost
Take any other proffessor
i liked the class but the professor was not the best. My grade went from an A to a D, due to forgetting a source
I took her for Comp one and two honors, and I loved her classes so much. The class was only reading and writing a few essays, while class time was all discussion about the reading for the week. If you get involved in the discussions you will learn so much, and Professor Magnani always made you think about things you usually wouldn't.
Professor Magnani expects you to read before every class and sometimes has pop quizzes although she provides great feedback and genuinely betters you as writer. She is probably a little tougher grading wise but you can make revisions within a 7 day span of your grade.
If you are a reader who likes to discuss literature, her class is perfect for you. I recommend taking her in person as she is way more responsive. The discussions we have in class help you critically think, opening your mind to new perspectives. I personally like the fact that she is a tough grader, it helped me improve my writings significantly.
Took online with this professor. Good luck getting in touch with her bc she'll never answer an email. When a hurricane hit St Pete back 2 back she said she'd extend due dates by 1wk. She never did it, never answered the emails asking her to extend it after she said she would. Then asks "why" when u ask for an extension. Disappointing!
Despite being online, I found this class fun, engaging, and pleasantly challenging. Her expectations are very clearly outlined, the course setup is well organized, and if you ever need help, stop by her office. She's very helpful and informative. No clue why there's so many bad reviews. Weekly discussions, three essays, and that's it!
Not considerate
Disrespectful
Consist mostly of essays, which she gives ampule time to complete and easy point when you show up for peer review day. Every class has a reading normally, and we discuss them in class that day so make sure to read them.
