Mrs. Matthews (soon to be Dr. Matthews) is an EXCELLENT teacher. She is helpful and clear on all assignments. I have become so much better at writing. She is brilliant, just brilliant. I plan to take her for ENGL 302, without a doubt.I can't even begin to describe how great of a professor she is.
Took the Adv. Comp. class, AWESOME prof. Helpful, kind, responsive. Funny AND intelligent. Good amount of reading and assignments, but a realistic amount. If you can put the effort forth, you're guaranteed a good grade. Fabulous teacher, on of the best I've ever had!
Absolutely wonderful and understanding teacher. Very lenient with due dates and very straight forward. DO NOT PICK 7:30 AM CLASS. It simply will not give you time to read or do assignments before they are due. Otherwise great.
Very helpful, responsive. If you don't understand something, she explains it until you do. Always willing to help in any way she can. Great teacher, highly recommended.
An amazing professor! Without a doubt the best i have ever had. I like her so much i took her twice and plan to take her for 302.Improves your writing abilites and is very helpful.Works really hard on Thesis statments. As much as it would stink, its worth it to take at 730am just to have her.
Terrible. I couldn't stand her. Not only were the readings tedious and obnoxious, but her assignments were stupid and facile. She was unhelpful, and very irritating. F-

A good woman. She cares about her students, and is truly passionate about what she teaches. She fosters good debates and discussions in her class. My only objection is that she is slightly biased towards the ideological left. As is most of Academia in the West these days....
Easy quiz every class on the reading, which takes about 30 minutes a night, really boosts your grade. Likes participation from the class, first paper is on an opinion which makes it easy and every other paper has the same kinda theme. If you will go to class, but you despise English, take her.
Wonderful teacher. So long as you come to class and do the work, you're guaranteed a good grade. Prof Matthews strives to make the class enjoyable, and while there is a fair amount of work, she is flexible and extremely fair. A real delight.
She grades too hard. Remember, this is 101. I would not recommend taking this class. The readings are boring and attending class was a waste of time. If I wanted to talk about boring books, I would have joined Oprah's book club.
Class was horrible.
Are you in college? Don't take Jessica Matthews if you are! She runs her class like remedial 9th grade English. It's ridiculously boring. Her assignments are tedious and unimportant. I learned nothing but to hate English classes EVEN MORE.
I took this class in the fall of '04. I enjoyed the class and felt she was a fair grader and constructive critic who helped to mold my final research paper into a great piece of work. Not sure what the deal is with her ENG101 class, but the 320 class was interesting. The book readings in the class were kind of boring, but tolerable.
definitely a class act
Do yourself a favor & you'll find plenty of better english professors. Absolutely does not care about her students & even if you come to class & put in alot of effort, she'll never reward you for it!! Patterson & Ireland are I'm sure far better than her!!
So far, I'm impressed. Definitely cares about students. Near instant responses to email, flexible about due dates, and clear in her instructions. Everything's on WebCT. A fine, caring professor.
Extremely picky professor, only helps certain students that she likes.Has personal biases towards certain students. Has no experience in business writing but claims that she knows it all.
I love her. She is extremely helpful and flexible with her schedule. If you email her for any help she will respond to it almost immediately. The only thing that gets annoying are the quizzes, but they are not too bad and you get to drop 3. She cares about her students and is always willing to help. I would definatly take another class with her!!
I agree with the previous comment. Great person, VERY unclear. She's the nicest (insert misogynistic cuss word here) you'll ever have! How can I know what she wants, if she doesn't know what she wants. Annoying.
I had to redo every paper I handed in, but man, at least she let's you redo them. She's really nice, and got the class involved. Even though it was full of bible-thumpers, it provided insight. I was hella-critisized, but that's okay, don't take it personally. Learn, and do better in the real world.Plus, I had a great group to work with ;) S,S,F ;)

Not a course for wimps. I agree, she's tough. But she'll help you if you ask, and in the end she's fair. Plus she made this one h*lluva an intersting class, and I'm not even a business major.
Prof. Matthews was tough but fair. Papers and readings were interesting, she genuinely cares for her students, very organized and on top of things. Quizes do get a bit irritating, and by no means an easy class. I've generally been able to BS my way through college papers, but hers take some effort. I have respect for Prof. Matthews, great prof.
Dr. Matthews is great esp. for the Humanities section. She is definitely worth taking because she genuinely cares for her students & allows you to redo your papers. There are no exams except little quizzes throughout the semester on the readings. I assure you that you'll become a better writer as long as you give the effort.
Matthews is a patient, helpful english teacher who does her best to explain things and teaches very thoroughly. As well as you attend most of her classes and keep up with her readings and quizzes it's an easy A.
Awesome teacher, very helpful!!
As an English major I took this class after taking 325, and I found this professor to go against everything that they teach you in 325. Her summer assignements have a tendency to be unclear and she expects you to act as though your reader is stupid. I think the only good thing about her is that she lets you rewrite your papers.
She is seriously one of the BEST professors I have EVER had, and trust me, I've had a lot. Dr. M makes class interesting, and is very clear on what she wants. She is also VERY fair, and will help you out. Just keep up with the material, and you'll be fine. EXTREMELY recommended and I promise you, you will learn something!
Prof. Matthews is a great, great teacher. Don't confuse that with easy though. There will be a lot of work, however she is fair and is not difficult or overbearing just for her own entertainment. I would take her again.
Good teacher, whole lotta work!! Do not take her summer course unless you have nothing else to do (to include have a job). You will hate it. However, she grades fair and is very helpful. Did I mention a whole lotta work. Be prepared!
Excellent professor, energitic and awesome. Keeps interest in students and helps with all teaching aspects.
Best English teacher ever. She goes over all the assignments carefully and gives helpful feedback.too bad she will only be teaching online now.
She's not easy. Her online summer class expects full attention. Juggling work is a challenge when also taking her course. Very meticulous about what she expects, but fair...and understanding. I will also add that her syllabus is cluttered. Take her though.
Mathews was a very hard professor! A lot of work, but allows you to revise and turn in drafts! She gives in-class quizes which are completely pointless and are somewhat difficult. Overall she's a great teacher but be prepared!
She give too much home work and does not post grades on time. She is a good professor but her assignments are too lenghty, and are unorganized for the online course. Too much work in too little time, and the grading is just ok.
She is a wonderful woman! Very knowledgable and helpful. She takes the time to read your essay and actually provides good feedback. BAD things are her DUE DATES on like sunday nghts! The amount of work is pointless, discussion posts, exercises, and quizzes plus 3 essays...be ready for a challenging course and LOTS LOTS of homework!
Tough class. There's a lot of work to be done, and you're expected to check Blackboard pretty much every day. Nice woman, though. Only take the class if you're serious about writing. Oh, and she's a relatively tough grader.
Amazing professor. Its a 300 level course, you have to study and put efforts. She is very supportive and helpful. Have conferences with her regarding your work, show your dedication. Her expectation form essay and assignments are very clear. READ the topic and answer accordingly and you should be fine. It's hybrid class so time management is vital.
Great professor! Very nice, easy to understand, and nice to work with. Go to class, do the readings and all the drafts/papers and you'll get an A.
The course itself isn't a piece of cake, but Dr. M is an awesome professor. I'm taking this course online and it's just a lot of assignments (quizzes, exercises, etc) with 3 essays to do, but they're not terribly hard and if you make an effort, you will get a good grade and she's willing to work with you.
Excellent Professor! Extremely helpful, concise and clear in directions and due date. Provides very informative and helpful feedback on your submissions. The class is 300 and is a writing intensive class so it does not matter who you take - this will be a hard class. But Dr. M wants you to succeed so - just do the assignments with effort!
She is awesome! She is incredibly nice and helpful. Her class is fun and there is only one paper due and it is not a hard paper. The final exam is also an essay. Her class is more of a discussion class and it is important to go.
One of the BEST professors. I had her for Why Women Read Romance and it was a really interesting class. We read a lot of novels and it's a fast paced class (about a book a month), but the novels are interesting! She really knows her stuff. Discussion is always good too! I would take her again and again if I could. Shes always willing to help too!
EXCELLENT!! She's so interesting; conducts great class discussions.Assignments are reasonable. You do have to read and pay attention. Go to class, participate, get stuff on time, read the novels and you'll do just fine! I would take her again if I could. No doubt.
Take her!!! This is my second time in one of her classes. Highly recommend it. A lot of deadlines, detailed instructions, and quizzes. She's a very eloquent person. Taking her course has truly made a better writer.
Dr.M is an excellent professor and a wonderful person. I enjoyed her class very much! You won't regret taking one of her classes. Highly knowledgeable. Come to class, do your reading, and show respect. You'll be successful in her class.
She is a great professor, her lectures are very interesting. One in class exam (but she prepares you for it weeks in advance), two papers due (again prepares you months in advance). HMW is not too bad. Gives extra credit opportunities. If you work hard, you'll get an A! Definitely recommend her!!
Took summer online class for Business. Great class, extremely relevant and learned a lot. They mean it when they say "writing INTENSIVE". Requires a lot of close reading every day (quizzes). Book required for weekly quizzes. Hard grader. Read everything and submit every assignment. Very prompt e-mail responses.
Dr. Matthews is a great professor. ENGH 302 is a tough class, but she really wants students to succeed and the feedback she provides on papers is extremely helpful. Take advantage of her comments and the opportunity to turn in drafts! She is the most helpful professor I have had at Mason.
Took Why Women Read Romance Novels. This was a great choice for a lit class. She is very talkative and loves to have discussions. Novels are read at a fast pace but they are interesting and the actual class is great. I highly recommend her! Your grade consists of a presentation, 5 quizzes on the novels, a paper, attendance, and participation.
Brilliant and caring professor. She is tough but you will become a better writer in her class. If something is not clear to you, make sure you talk to her about it. She is wonderful at interacting with students and I took this online. I am a senior and most of my program has been online. She organized the best online clourse I have taken.
Enjoyed her class, signed up for Why Women Read Romance Novels and I enjoyed it. We read 5 novels during the entire semester which included 5 tests, your lowest quiz grade is dropped. Participation is not mandatory but it is part of your participation grade which is easy to get mostly if you show up. Great teacher, totally recommend her!
Dr. Matthews' Marriage Plots was an excellent course! You read 5 books and watch 2 movies. It is an interesting course and the reading is easy to get through. There 4 quizzes and no final. Dr. Matthews is always available to help and provides helpful feedback. Overall an awesome course- definitely recommend taking or taking a class with her!
ENGH 202- Marriage Plots. She is so great and is a very helpful professor. There are 4 quizzes on the books read, lowest grade dropped. In addition, she creates in class debates in which you are assigned a certain position on an issue in the novel and you debate with the other team in class on the issue. Takes up a whole class period and is helpful
Honestly cares about student's learning within the course and enjoys teaching. The course itself is not good and focuses too much on prepping undergraduates to do academic research. Not enough focus on the ability to write. If you have to take this course, Matthews isn't a bad choice, but be prepared for pointless essay requirements.
Most interesting and well-designed course I have taken! A couple of the books are lengthy but they keep your attention. There is one paper and one debate on a marriage issue. Prof. Matthews was extremely helpful and a great speaker. In-class discussions were always great and helped you learn, so definitely read the books, you won't regret it!
This course is a lot of work, but I have never had a teacher give me so much feedback on my papers. Plus, she gives you feedback on drafts. I had two conferences with her that helped, too. Tough grader, but she is a very nice person.
I have studied at 3 universities, am very confident in my writing abilities (rarely get below a B+ on essays), and I have to say this is the hardest class I have ever taken. It is very well organized, but if you are taking a lot of classes or have a hectic schedule, maybe look at another section. It is a ton of work and she is a very hard grader.
Great English professor. ALWAYS accessible through email. The syllabus and paper assignments were clearly laid out. 10/10 would take again. I took the course online and when I met her in person for my conferences, she was very nice. There are textbooks required, but I never used or purchased them.
Pros: Pro. Matthews is very accessible outside of class, gives A TON of feedback. Cons: It is practically impossible to get an A. On her grading criteria, it literally says an assignment that "exceeds expectations" is a B. She is extremely picky with the way you do assignments. This is the first English class I will get a B in (even counting HS).
Don't get me wrong--Prof. Matthews is a great professor. BUT if you're not very good at writing papers, then do not take her. She's a very tough grader & it's just about impossible to get an A or even a high B. She takes points off for very little things and sometimes they are opinions. It's very research focused so don't expect to learn much else.
This is an awesome class: "Popular Romance Novels." It's not every day that you get to read nothing but novels as "textbooks" and mostly we're just talking about it. If this class is ever offered again, go for it! No exams for the class, but there are some writing assignments and a presentation you'll have to do, so keep that in mind.
There are two types of highly rated professors: the easy A's and the ones that make you learn. Jessica Matthews is the latter of the two. She is incredibly difficult, but I knew that going into it. She is an amazing teacher and really beats you into shape when it comes to writing, but it can be a lot for an online class. Take her if you write! :)
This was an online course for me. She is an extremely tough grader! Participation was the sole focus- many discussion questions, group questions, homework, quizzes etc. The course is mostly research based. But Matthews is a great teacher, always accessible outside of hours and is sweet.
Smart, insightful, fun lectures. Tolerates cursing when necessary, which is good, considering it's a modern lit course! Doesn't try to censor anyone, ever, and encourages thought and understanding. Takes a bit to get grades back. Very accessible and kind, but sets a standard. Learned our names in two class periods.
hardest professor ever and so so much work
I have a feeling that all her ratings on this site were written by her. She's a very tough grader to please. I would go above and beyond the required guidelines for assignments but she would always find a way to make me feel lowly about my writing. Very discouraging.
AVOID TAKING THIS ONLINE CLASS! Matthews is a nice professor and seems very knowledgeable. But this class requires an INSANE amount of work. There are 3-4 different GRADED assignments/quizzes every week and they are pretty pointless. Matthews is a really hard grader as well...I regret not taking ENGH 302 in person :(
I took this online course and it was the worst decision I would make. Prof. Matthews is a nice person but an extremely tough grader. Everything I wrote didn't please her. I love to write but after taking this class I feel even worse about my writing. Please take course in person!!
I am sorry to say that Professor Matthews is a very nice person and helpful in all her responses, however she is a super hard grader. I have always been a good writer, and in all my other upper level classes, my teachers give good feedback on the essays I submit. In this class, it was impossible to get a good grade on any assignment.
Prof. Matthews helped me pass this course. She even conferenced with me online at 11:00 pm so that I could get my kids to bed first. Her feedback is amazing. She uses rubrics to grade everything and gives them out ahead of time. If you can get in her class, take her.
Professor Matthews is a really great person, I can tell that she has passion for her students. This class (ENGH 201) was the only option I could take to fulfill my degree online for Mason. She warned us that it was a writing intensive course and I took that as a challenge. I have never had a grade this high before. Lots of work but well worth it.
Well organized course. Easy to follow. She is a good person and always helpful.
This is by far the hardest class I have taken. Although this is a 200 level class there is a lot of work and she grades very tough and takes off points for the smallest things. I would not recommend taking this class.
The course is good once you get the routine of it. Very helpful professor who responds right away, even though the course is online. It is tough to get into her course because it fills up so quickly, so I'm glad I was able to get in.
Amazing professor. She is willing to work with you on any assignment and responds to emails so quickly. I had her for ENGH 302 Online and even though it was a lot of work she offers you a clear a concise schedule and great feedback. Extremely flexible and understanding, especially due to the effect COVID-19 had on classes.
This was by far the worst professor I have ever taken, she is a tough grader and does not really work with her students. Avoid this professor at all costs. Has mandatory meetings in order to complete assignments.
Super sweet prof who was always available in office hours to talk or help. The course was writing intensive but she did her best to disperse the work and even gave us an extension on one of the projects. Would take again!
Nice person. I wouldn't have passed this class without her. Always available when you email her. I would take her again.
Dr. Matthews is a great professor. Her class is not easy and there is a lot of homework to be done and is very writing intensive but, she provides loads of feedback and isn't hesitant at all to respond to emails. She communicates her expectations clearly in conferences. Put in the work and communicate with her, you will pass. Very kind professor
Be aware! Do not take this professor if you do not like heavy research. The research needs to be current to count towards your grade. Compare to my last professor, she is tough to get her be a little flexible on papers. Otherwise, she reply emails fast, she send announcements every week, she sent out homework remainders.
Do not take this class! Any other ENG 302 would be better than Professor Matthews. Overwhelming amount of research and reading, Mutiple items due in one-week, mandatory meetings in order to submit assignments. AVOID!
I LOVED Professor Matthews! I would not have passed this course without her help. She metwith me at night & on the weekends, and she alwasy gave me good feedback. When I got behind, she would email me to remind me to catch up, which I needed since this class is online. Most of all, she is very understanding and easy to talk to.
Straightforward course: if you do the lesson and follow directions, you will get a good grade. Clear organization for an online class. The best thing is that the professor responds to your emails right away. She's a nice person, too.
Personality-wise, Dr. Matthews is great. She responds to emails right away, grades are in within the week, and her BB setup is really easy to use. However, if you take 302 with Dr. Matthews prepare to work a lot harder than everyone else. 2-3 assignments per week made it really hard to stay on top of assignments. Other 302 professors are easier.
Professor Matthews was an incredible professor and extremely knowledgeable. Her class was just a bit rough. An extreme amount of work required each week and super nitpicky about what you turn in. If you take her online classes then virtual 1 on 1 zoom meetings are required to attend before every big assignment. I cried doing the assignments.
