procrastinarot!!! If you do not want to learn anything, take her class. She’ll be late every time she’ will not know what you are supposed to do in class. She will turn your essays back with delay of two months. She’ll give bad grades or whatever she want
She is a very bad teacher. Lets keep it to that. Its not worth writing bad reviews about why she is bad. If you want to know why she is bad, go waste a semester on her and find out.
She is not a good teacher. She is legendary for her lateness, hypocrite views, and just plain lack of fair grading. She expects 100% from you while just giving her 10% to you. I do not care for her daughters or what ever they are being in class either.
This instructor, if you can even call her that, is one of the most useless instructors around. I can assure you, that you will not learn anything in her class. Tho, she will assign you work as if you were tought everything. My advice, Skip this instructor
I switched teachers after a few classes with her. Too political, & hipocritical. She sat through all of her classes, acting as it was her forum to talk about whatever she wanted, not English. Also, said she "didn't see the value of teaching Shakespeare." can someone tell her it's an ENGLISH class??
jessica is an awesome instructor. sure, she may be late sometimes and bring her children to class, but i found these instances to in no way affect her sytle of teaching. i came out of her classes with a greater knowledge and appreciation of blk. authors and with the confidence of a skilled writer.
Sometime around the midterm I came to the realization that no matter how hard I tried I could not get an A in her class. Every essay I turned in was given back to me with a b or B- on it, so I stopped trying and still got B’s. Werid eh? I would not take her again.e around the midterm i

This instructor is not any good. I believe that she grades way too hard based on her poor teachign style. She comes late to class every class, uses class time to talk about what ever she wants too. She has a one sided view, HERS. She also does not let you air your opinions. Enough said. Shes not worth it.
She is a pretty cool teacher, she is late alot, and is a little scatterbrained, she is also a pretty hard grader, but my essay writing has improved dramatically because of her being tough, I am glad I took her class, because now I write so much better, I could care less that I will prolly end up with only a B or C in her class.
She definitely has her favorites and you better be the lucky one that gets to go to her house for get togethers...kiss her butt and she'll love you forever..
Amazing person, so-so teacher. she forgot asignmens and our mid-term was delayed 2-3 weeks because she's so unorganized. her reading assignments were garbage. she was hard only because you had no idea what she was going to test on. good luck with this one.
Like a lot of others said, she is a horrible teacher. She comes to class late, sometimes not at all. She is very unclear with her materials. And uses classtime to talk about her personal life. Her grading seems to be based on if she likes you or not.
Jessica does not favorites. She knows literature and presents and teaches it well. In both classes I took, one was completely afro-centric and feminist (Blk. women in lit) and in 1B, there was a predominance in Blk. authors. Some saw this as a drawback, but as a male I saw it as a strength in style wanting me explore black feminist lit. further.
She's a hard grader there's alot of in class essay (4) she's always late so by the time she gets to class its almost time to go
Alright, Jessica is a little nuts, she plays favorites and I was lucky enough to be one of them. She seems relaxed until you get your paper back with a bad grade but ultimatly I learned alot about how to structure a paper and I enjoyed the reading.
She is a very open-minded and intelligent person. She is the best teacher I ever had. The people who say she can't teach are probably the slackers or the smart-asses. She is a strong woman who will check your ass, but she does grade fairly. I got Bs both in Eng 96 & Eng 1A.
Very disorganized in class. Shows up late.
if your job title was "teacher" wouldn't you try to actually "teach" something... anything... occasionally... even twice a semester? maybe? guess not... she shows up 15 minutes late, for a 50 minute long class, everyday. she only grades the first half of your essays; but those grades don't correspond in to your final grade anyway. waste of time
she's a wanna-be political science teacher, all she does is ****/whine about corporations or tell stories about her daughter. the class is never about writing even when she occasionaly shows up before it's half over.
If you want to learn something and get good grades DO NOT take this teacher. She is always late to class, she does not take it serious. I had to drop the class with W. I approached her about something and she told me that it is her show and she runs any way she wants. She also kicks you out of class if your phone rings and marks you absent.
If you like talking about how the white man is ruining the planet for everyone else and focussing on literature written by and made for women, then take this class. I don't remeber anything from the 1 month I was in her class except stories about her stupid children and the phrase "white men don't struggle". This woman is full of ****.
ALL COMMENTS MADE B4 ME ARE RIGHT. I HAPPEN TO NOT DISLIKE HER PERSONALITY, BUT SHES AN AWFUL TEACHER. ALWAYS LATE, CHIT CHAT ABOUT HER LIL LIFE OR WHATEVER ELSE INSTEAD OF TEACHING. SHE TAKE MONTHS TO GRADE UR TESTS. IRONICALLY SHE IS TUFF WHEN GRADING. U WILL HEAR THE WORDS "MY BLACK ASS" AND "****" IN ALMOST EVERY CLASS...

Always late. 6 weeks to get papers graded. Liked her choice of reading material, wouldn't have read Hurston on my own. WAAAAY too much time spent on her personal life. I wanted to talk about poetry (which she didn't get around to) she wanted to talk about her boyfriend and pregnant daughter. Still, got an A, so I guess I can't complain.
I didn't have her as a teacher BUT when i tried to add her class, she was really rude. I was rejected from another eng class and went to hers a little later asking her politely if she was still adding and her response was, "NOT IF YOU'RE GOING TO INTERRUPT MY CLASS." her door was open, she should have closed it or something. how rude.
I took her English class that was a womens studies focus. Worst class ever. All she did was complain about men and how all the worlds problems are because of men. If you brought up a new idea that seemed to contradict hers she become very rude. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!
I've increased more anxieties from this lady. She is rude, disorganized, helpless, and terrible. If you want to transfer to UC or 4-year college institution and are required to get a B or better grade, this is not your Eng 1A teacher.
Just thinking about her angers me. She was late every day and often didn't show up at all (no note of course). Nevertheless, she'd mark US down for being late/absent. She's also blatantly **** and a hypocite for doing so. Don't take her class!
english is my favorite subject although she did not prepare me for 1B, i did all the work, participated and got a c. She always came late never had a lesson plan prepared. We barely used the books or went by them. She came twenty minutes late to our final and we still had to write an in class essay within 30 min.
One of the best English teachers I ever took
Attendance is mandatory, but she was never there. I have to agree with the other reviewers, she is rude, disorganized, and unavailable. If you want to hone your writing skills and get good feedback, do not take her class. At the midterm we had only written one paper and that had not been graded. She is not interested in teaching and shouldn't be.
She seems like a cool person but she's a HORRIBLE teacher! She's a total hippocrite: she was always late, yet expected you to be on time and marked you down if you weren't. Based on her policy, if I had missed as many classes as she did, I'd have gotten an F! Her standards are also extremely high and she doesn't explain things well, if at all: she
She's HORRIBLE! Her standards are also extremely high and she doesn't explain things well, if at all: she would give you an essay assignment, and when you got it back, you'd be shocked at all the things she marked you down for because she never explained them or what she wanted and how she wanted it done!
She's an extremely BAD teacher! Going to her class was a total waste of my time! As if reading the crap she assigned wasn't bad enough, she wasted half the class talking about whatever she wanted, which was usually her personal life.
By far the worst teacher i have ever had. She holds her students to a standard 10 times higher then what she brings to class (if she comes at all). She habitually wasted class time to talk about her family and their finances, she is always late, she takes months to turn back papers, no clear grading standard, and she clearly played favorites.
This instructor is NOT one I would recommend. She is an unfair grader and does very little teaching. I often wondered whether or not I was in a POLS 1 course or English. She often contradicts herself and relies on the students to answer questions about English grammar. Poor instructor.
Unfair Grader. Completely unfair!!! She barely comes to class on time. For the final, she came 30 min. late and we had to write a 8 page essay in only an hour and a half!!!!! She's not into teaching, gets side tracked alot, and she's not helpful at all!
I have mixed feelings about Nelson. On one hand, if you follow her rules and essay format, she will give you a good grade. On the other hand, she doesn't teach you anything. Her class consist of discussing current events and her children, not relevant to English 1A. Just follow her rules, show up to class, and you'll be fine!
She's a critical grader and often late, but she's got a great sense of humor, offers extra help and ultimately made my Eng.1a class an enjoyably valuable one.
people, listen to me: if you want to fail your english class, i really recommend that you take her. she is the worst teacher i have ever had. the moment you walk through her door, she will give you an F. she is so picky about the essays, if you forget to put a coma or somthing like that, she will take a lot of pints off. remember, automatic F
Ms. Nelson, is one tough cookie but if u pay attention to her directions and put effort forth when writing your essays you should do fine. She's hilarious and kept me entertained in class, shes a sweetheart but she is a challenge, so be prepared to work!
She is very hard! We had to do two 5 page essays and an 8 page essay and were only in English 96?!? Sheesh, very critical too. If you like the challenge, by all means. Other than that, let this be my warning to you. Oh btw, our in-class essays has to have a WORKS CITED LIST -_-
She is actually a really good teacher. People who rate her poorly are only doing so because they did not follow her directions when writing essays. She clearly tells students what she expects of them and if you dont follow a certain set of rules like not having one inch margins or not having a work cited page you will get an F. Its not that hard
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. I worked hard on my essays, followed her instructions and still I failed my papers. However this is not what i am complaining about. Maybe I deserved the F (though I worked hard) but she did not write ANYTHING on the paper to help me. She is lazy and uses strictness to get away with it. Skip this teacher.
Definitely the hardest teacher I have had here, but also one of the most effective teachers. If you are the lazy type then her class will be miserable. However, if you rise up to the challenge, you will see that she is one of the better English teachers. Topics were mainly political, so be to actually have to argue rationally about your views!
Me no likey the Lundy. I took her 96 last summer- awful. She was late everyday, didn't actually teach a thing except how to form a work cited page, wasted hours of class talking about off-topic subjects and graded extremely tough using vauge, arbitrary criteria that half the students seemed to botch... I worked damn hard for a B. Aviod if you can!
Wow not good at all! Don't waste your time taking her class. She doesn't hep at all and will spend all of class talking about her personal life or others. Her "grading" is all over the place and will leave you 0_o
She's not as bad as what people are saying. Just follow the guidelines and do well, that's about it. She doesn't really ask much. The stuff she teaches you; you'll need it in the end anyway. But she does go off topic alot.
The worst teacher ever. She obviously uses her personal feelings about students when grading. She ignored my raised hand or belittled my contribution. Often late but would get pissed if a student was. No constructive or helpful comments on essays. Spent a lot of class time NOT teaching but rather talking about her personal life. RIDICULOUS!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She is the worst teacher you will ever have. She has no desire to be a teacher, and should just retire already. There is a reason the class has room in it! I have had few really bad teachers, and i am sorry to say this is one of them. She is not a bad person, just not the one that you want for a English teacher. Sincerly
One of the more interesting professors I've had. She has strict guidelines, but I don't think that they're arbitrary; you'll need to know that stuff to go any further. I appreciated the fact that I had to work hard for my A. Honestly, if you show up to class (on time) and listen to what she says, you'll do just fine.
I will personally say that she is one of the worst ever met. She is not hard, her class is not so difficult, that is not the reason why students leave. She uses her own personal biases when she teaches, and somewhat favors students who agree with her. AVOID,I got a B but she was a really bad teacher.
Probably the worse teacher i've ever had. She is awful. She comes to class late every session! Sometimes up to 20 to 30 minutes late. She is a hard grader, which doesn't make sense since she doesn't teach as much as we just end up talking about her personal life. I learned far more about her family that i did any English. She also plays favorites.
All the comments are true. Yes she comes to class late & gets mad when a student is late, because if you come to class later than her of course she is going to be pissed. Class grading is quite fair but she is very detail about the format you turn it in. strict MLA format. If you need an ENG class&adding, she will most likely add you. Quite nice.
She is not at all like what the previous raters wrote. What they don't understand is she was going through a tough time. Just follow instructions, put some effort in your papers and you will do fine. If you don't understand go to her office hours and she will take her time and explain. Just don't mess around, this is college not high school.
Most of these negative comments come from students that are not prepared. Most idiots these days complain the teacher is hard, but in reality, they just don't know how to write a decent paper. If you can write a decent paper, this teacher is the best. She is not hard. She teaches the class and really works with the students. Try, learn, get an A.
I took Prof. Nelson for English 1A my very first semester at CCSF. She was amazingly helpful when I visited during office hours, and she was very honest. She told me right off after my second essay that I already was improving, and she made me feel excited for college. She has high standards, but she makes sure everyone can reach them if they try!
Professor Nelson certainly deserves a higher score! Diverse selection of texts, and makes sure everyone participates in discussions. Anal on MLA format (as she says herself); if you're not that good with MLA, you suffer now or suffer in a harder course. Detailed essay checks, with emphasis on both grammar and content. A nice teacher for 1A!
I found this professor to be very helpful simply because she is a professor that knows what she wants and gets straight to the point. My writing improved during this past summer thanks to Ms. Nelson. Yes, she is late some of the time but I think she is a great teacher for 1A. Ms Nelson is very clear and is more than happy to answer any questions you have.
Not a good person or teacher. She is condescending with her students which creates the fear of failing. You will be stressed the entire semester if you take her. Avoid this professor!
Halfway thru the semester, considering dropping! Wish I had read reviews of her, she does not teach, wastes my time, asks personal questions in class. Very stressful. No reading, essay topics are lame, not based on reading. Fed up!!!
I LOVED English before this class. She has expectations that are very precise but doesnt take time to go over them in detail w/students. Thinks it makes her cool w/students that she curses&talks in this 'sistah gurl' hood mama way..acts like every1 has had her before&hs experience w/hr expectations..always late and/or abscent&doesn't understand her
I don't understand how everyone has rated Professor Nelson so low. She the TRUTH and its understandable that the average student cannot handle that. If you didn't learn anything, go back to ENG 96 because that is entirely the students fault. Its ENG 1C people. You should know how to write already.
DO NOT take her class! She favors students in classes and is extremely unorganized. I feel that she grades unfairly as well. She is fun to listen to, but her lectures often have nothing to do with what we're learning and focus more on her own personal feelings. WOULD DEFINATLY NOT RECOMMEND HER!!
My favorite teacher at City College. She wants students to do well in the class, that's why she is tough on people. If she knows that you can be good with her work, then she'll push you. I took her about a year ago and I still talk to her as if I'm in her class. If you need help with the paper, go to her office hours.
Grades brutally and will fail your paper if you make the slightest mistake on your formatting. We spent more time in class debating and talking about women's studies issues, than talking about English -- which is fine, but first and foremost this is an English class.
If you think she's hard, you were not doing your assignments. You do have to write, but that is the point of English right? If you were at a four year university, there would be a lot of discussion. The discussions are to help you formulate ideas for your papers, Duh. Anyway, if you like writing 3-4 papers in 18 weeks, take her class. JMO!
I cannot believe the comments here. Ms. Nelson is fantastic! She loves to help, hear you, and is very understanding. Just make time to attend the class and meet her during office hours. You are in college, please make an effort to show some seriousness in your work; you will be ok.
she is a great teacher who is very involved in class lectures. assignment are easy as long as you stay involved in lectures as well. expect to learn
Ms. Nelson is full of tough love. People either dig it or don't. She really pushes you to do well. If you don't understand, ask or check the handouts. She gives you a blueprint on how to succeed at the start of every semester. Follow the directions, go to class prepared and ask questions = Golden!
Ms. Nelson is a very good teacher with high expectations for her students. Take her class if you want to be challenged to be the best you can be at english. I got an A in !a because of her expectations for me in 96. She is always willing to help students and teaches life as well as english. I highly recommend this class!!
every comment in here is correct, by the end of he semester I know more about her family then English. Unless you are a super amazon writer don't take her class, she's awful grader, super discouraging she basically sets you up to fail. Half the students dropped out, even if this is ur last resort DONT DO IT! You will fail
She's the type of teacher that really wants you to kiss up to her. If you don't see her during office hours u are bound to fail. Lectures are boring and unrelated to essays. If you have the same view points as her then she will love u if you don't then she'll be dismissive
if you want to fail take this course. bad at explaining things, crams essays in. she has no structure in the class, just makes up everything along the way. very rude, and will fail you for not having ur margins a certain way, 17 lines on the last page, peer review or a work cited page a certain. if u miss any of those she wont even look at ur essay
worst teacher anyone can take. please note that even if you turn in everything correct if you don't have a certain writing style she will try to fail you, ive had several people o know take her and they all say it was the worst experience they have had.
I took this class bc the rest were full, I realize now that I should have much rather not taken English for a semester then with this teacher. Even if you work intensely hard she will fail you.. she even said it herself in the class " I had one student who had a tutor the whole semester and they didn't pass" what does that say about the teacher?
I don't know what the bottom comment said about 3-4 page essay in 18weeks, we had 3 essays 8-9pages and she made us read an entire book the last week of class so if you like 8-9 pages essays take her class.
Ms. Nelson is one of the finest English teachers at city she is there to make sure you are able to write effective paper on getting your thoughts clear and concise. I just love her teaching ethics.
nooooooo! Do not take her!!!
I don't think she really cares about her students. She is tenured, so you'll know she gets to ask favors of particular students and not tending to organize the course. If you only have her class to take, do me a favor and just wait a semester for your sake. You'll waste entire semester and effort by getting C just to do rigorous works in last week.
I am so grateful to have taken Ms. Nelsons class! I respect her and have enjoyed her class a lot. Those of you considering taking her class just know that she expects a lot of participation. Considering we discussed a lot of real issues like poverty and racism, she manages to make it a thought provoking experience...
She's a tough love teacher. She's very helpful outside class (most people don't realize this), she's funny, but you HAVE to do work. Read all the assigned materials or you won't pass. She won't assign homework, but make sure that you go out of your own way to learn the skills this class demands.
Ms. Nelson is such a great teacher but she is so TOUGH! if you are not willing to work, don't even bother looking into taking one of her classes. She makes you work! If you are not writing at a college grade level she will get you there.
Absolutely wonderful instructor. I LOVED her reading selection. In her 1B class lots of literature on black history, she makes it come to life and is very passionate about it. She is a HARD GRADER, but fair. The first essay is tough but after a while you start to understand her grading. Lots of writing and reading but a great class
Honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. She made my first semester at City College a great one and she is such an amazing person. Her classes are really understanding and easy but it's up to you to pay attention. She is so understanding and will do anything to help you pass. Such a fun professor, highly recommended!
Never have had trouble in English classes as paper writing has always been one of my strengths. I was stuck taking Mrs. Lundy one semester due to a lack of other options. This teacher shows EXTREME preference to specific students. To put it bluntly, she has racial preference. I was given a C for midterm grade and had to fight her for my rightful A.
Worst teacher ever. If you want to pass DON'T TAKE HER !!!!p
Mrs. Nelson was very funny and made it a pleasure to come to class. There was definitely a good amount of work, but she was very understanding and wanted everyone to succeed. You do have to work in groups and present to the class, but she broke up the essay work so it wasn't too much. Excellent teacher.
Her class is very fun to attend and a very nice teacher. Really helpful :) trust me haha I got an easy A with 12 weeks of not attending class
Ms. Nelson is the most caring teacher in CCSF. She likes to get to know her students and build a friendly relationship with them. She is willing to help you if you're having any trouble. If she sees that you are dedicated, participating and really trying to improve you're writing skills, she will pass you.
Honestly the best professor I've had in my whole education. I was lucky enough to have taken her English course along with Luana's dance history and the two of them are very close friends. The books were for minority and women's rights, so I highly recommend it if that's what you're interested in. I will forever be grateful for taking this class.
After taking her class, her socioeconomic teaching of our American incarceration system still stays on my mind. I am forever grateful for the seeds of social justice she planted in me because now I am studying feminism & gender equality. The film "The life of David Gale" still burned into my mind about the prejudice Death Penalty of our country.
