Parr is a young, new teacher. She mostly recites information from the textbook. She has a fairly positive attitude, but I recommend taking general chemistry from a more experienced instructor. Also, lab and lecture usually don't match-up in meaningful ways.
Most helpful professor! she will sit down with you and explain concepts until you understand them and never make you feel dumb or unworthy of her time. tests cover the same concepts in class just applied to more intricate questions, much like the HW. Not the easiest professor but you truly learn from her, which helps a lot for later sciences
lab and lecture never match up, it doesn't matter which professor you have. she provides lots of examples in class and extra practice problems that all really help. test average used to be significantly lower than Bau's, but it all evens out in the end. it got closer 2nd semester so maybe things have changed by now. curve works out fairly though
She is very deceiving because her lectures are simple but her tests are awful. She is also very unclear about how your grades will work out. Basically another failure USC professor.
she is really clear and specific about what is going to be on the test which makes her a lot easier to study for than the other CHEM 105 proffs. she also gives you bonus points for showing up to lectures which is nice
Very good teaching style, easy to understand. Great teacher :)
I really like her. The class is pretty hard and if you haven't taken a lot of chemistry you have your work cut out for you. She is a good professor though. She is SUPER nice and approachable. She is the kind of professor who is there for her students.
A really good professor for a somewhat difficult class. She is very nice, easy to approach, and doesn't speak in a monotone. All of her lecture material is posted online, but you should really try and make it to class.
Parr is a great professor. She is very straightforward and her lectures are clear and concise. Attend lecture and do the homework and you're set for the tests.
If you have no prior knowledge of chemistry, this class will be extremely difficult. She is helpful when it comes to fixing your grade, but when I asked her for help with a concept, she referred me to my book. ALEKS takes up a TON of your time. Her tests were sometimes very similar to her practice tests; at other times, they were wildly different.
Parr is pretty easy to understand. I wouldn't say that the class is very interesting, but if you go to class and do the homework and practice exams, you should be fine. Would recommend.
She seems nice but her class is terrible. What she talks about in lecture has nothing to do with the exams. She only presents easy stuff in lecture while the exams are ridiculously tricky and there's never enough time to finish. Taking this class discouraged me from further taking chemistry classes. The exams are just really unfair.
I had her for 105a and 105b. She reads pre-made slides from the book for lecture, is quick to rush out of office hours, and makes mistakes on nearly every practice exam. Also, the real exams do not accurately reflect what she attempts to teach, largely due to her being a researcher, and not a teacher. Careful reading other reviews on here, they seem pretty fake.
Dr. Parr is a very clear lecturer. She reads off slides, but goes through problems and is very good at explaining the material. However, she goes through easier examples. The exams are very tricky. If you read the textbook along with class and DO ALL THE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK (this is very important--you will do well on exams if u do), it's not bad
she uses very elementary problems in lecture that dont resemble tests at all. her practice tests she posts are so easy they leave you with false hope. tests are nearly impossible with 10 pages and only 1 hour to complete. if you go to lecture and do the HW you will definitely struggle. also some of the lab TAs are useless. worst class ive ever had
Terrible
The other reviews sound too good to be true. Take her at your own risk.
Take at your own risk.
I loved Dr. Parr. Her slides are very clear and she is extremely approachable both after class and during office hours. She will always answer your questions clearly and make sure you understand it. Exams are much harder than the problems you do in class, but not ridiculous. If you took AP Chem in high school, you will be TOTALLY fine.
Seems nice and sweet because of her little girl voice, but can be snappy when she becomes impatient. Don't ask questions in lecture unless you want her to make a fool of you! Her practice exams don't compare to the difficulty of the real ones so false confidence kills many students. Have fun!
Dr. Parr explains things well and is willing to answer any questions you might have. I took this class during the summer. The practice problems in class and the practice exams are easier than the actual tests. It's not an easy class, but if you have to take it, I think that Dr. Parr is a good choice for professor.
Lectures and practice problems/tests were much easier than the tests. She explains things well, though she could present more test-like problems. It's a chemistry class, nothing unusual. Tests were a pretty tricky, but it's supposed to be terribly hard, so don't cry about it
Dr. Parr is an overall good teacher. It's important to do all the problems she assigns to prepare for exams. Exams are definitely tricky, and not like the examples she gives in class, so learn the material well. (You need to go to class every time to earn your clicker points.)
Explains concepts very clearly. Tests are tricky, but if you understand the concepts and work on practice problems, you'll be fine. Lectures aren't always that interesting but they're thorough and you don't even really need to read the book.
I love Dr. Parr. She explains things so well. She really cares about her students if you make the effort to go in. I went in every Tuesday for help and ended up pulling my grades into the 90s section towards the end of the semester. Use the book, study hard and you can get an A. JUST BEAT THE CURVE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
If you have the option to take Parr's class, then take her. She explains the concepts very clearly. Go to class, because she outlines the concepts and does multiple practice problems that resemble test problems. She doesn't mind high exam scores, so midterms are generally straightforward but the final was tricky. Also very kind and helpful.
Very helpful professor and strong at explaining the material. After leaving 105A, she's a breath of fresh air for sure. Be aware that the Chem dept has a limit on the % of A's and B's so, despite any effort you or Dr. Parr makes, there's still going to be a "downward" curve. That being said, she's fair in her presentation and testing of topics.
She posts all her pwpts online so unless you're dumb, you don't need pay attention in class. With that said, she's a decent teacher and lectures thoroughly. Her tend to be straightforward and predictable. Overall, not fantastic and not incompetent.
After having Bertolini for 105a, Parr is not difficult. As long as you do book problems & pay some attention in class, & SI, you should be pretty fine. She is super helpful & explains very clearly. You must put a lot of effort to do well in this class!
Dr. Parr is the best option for chemistry lecturer! She is way easier than Dr. Bertolini and she always wants to help her students. The labs are hard, but she doesn't control them and her tests are really similar to the practice tests she posts online. Also all powerpoints are posted online which is nice.
She is very clear and works a lot of examples in class. However, she is bad at responding to emails and is a dry lecturer. Her slides and practice exam seem pretty straightforward but her exams were much harder than the examples she worked in class and the practice exam. Her office hours were not that useful either (very crowded).
She's a great lecturer, but her tests are horrible.
She is a nice professor and approachable, but her class and sample examples are like adding 2+2 in comparison to the difficulty of her exams. Her exams are also poorly proof-read, which is unprofessional. The chemistry department as a whole at USC is very poor, so I am not sure there are better options. Just don't rely on her practice exams!
Boring lecturer but she explains things pretty well. The tests that she writes are usually way easier than the ones that the other professor writes (Bertolini), so don't rely just on the practice exams that Parr gives you.
Parr sometimes struggles to get concepts across but no matter which way you spin it, the content is pretty basic. Look at practice tests, ignore the TA's, and read the book and it won't be very difficult.
Class is easy if you stay on top of practice problems and pay attention in lecture. Take advantage of practice exams. She sometimes does not explain concepts well so using the textbook is advised. B- is because of the ridiculously hard lab. Instead of spending 4 hours on post lab, I focused on lecture material instead and got B's on every test.
Such a helpful professor! Just wish she would go over harder problems in class that are the same level of difficulty as her tests!
I love Parr. Once you take more chem classes at USC, you'll really appreciate her. She explains concepts very well and is very helpful. You can definitely get an A in this class and 105 with her. She's also really sweet.
Her lectures are clear and explain the material well!
Standard Chemistry teacher. She puts up all of the PowerPoints, but going to class is very helpful. She's better than the other teachers from what I've heard, and although lectures can be pretty dry, she tries to spice it up with a video once in a while. She always has office hours and is very willing to help if you need it.
105A is a pretty typical entry-level STEM course, but Dr. Parr makes it as painless as it can possibly be. There's very little reason not to show up to lecture; she's engaging and has a fun personality. Her explanations are thorough and fairly simple, but you do need to pay attention and practice, especially if you didn't take AP chemistry.
There's a total of three exams during the entire semester (she drops the lowest of the three), not including the final. All the tests are pretty much taken verbatim from the powerpoint slides. Parr recognizes that this is a GE class and is very lax about everything. She makes class enjoyable and bearable and honestly I would def take again.
Dr. Parr is an excellent teacher. She really explains things as clearly as possible and is extremely helpfuleasily approachable regarding the course. She really wants you to understand chemistry. I personally found her much better than Bertolini as a teacher. Her tests are reasonable and her grading is fair. Wish I had her for 105a! She's great.
Really cares about her students. Very helpful during office hours. A lot of people found the textbook not necessary because the lectures were quote thorough and helpful, but I would recommend it as it explains things differently, which is always a benefit. Tests are tough, but the problems are never truly unexpected. Overall, great class.
She is a clear lecturer. But she oversimplifies topics during the lecture and then gives difficult exams. The exams are slightly tricky. But, if you study you will be fine.
Dr. Parr is one of the most amazing lecturers I have had at SC. She makes complicated chemistry concepts easy to understand and is always there to answer your questions. Her tests are very reasonable. The only imperfection is that she doesnt do many in-class demos.
Really easy tests and clear lectures. Extremely easy class and teacher, but this can also be a bit boring.
I like Bertolini better since I took 105a from him. Dr Parr only post one sample exams which gives less opportunities to practice. She loves giving questions that is not explained a lot in the lecture and test them in exams. Her exams are not as clear as Bertolini's. So I would suggest take Bertolini's 105b
Dr. Parr is not at all intimidating and a pretty clear lecturer with lots of examples. The tests are pretty tough and you really have to know your material to do well on them. Show up to class to get those easy clicker points and to learn. The book will be a big resource for you and do your practice problems you degenerate.
Professor Parr's class is very easy: lectures are not necessary at all and tests are very straightforward. She is very approachable if you have questions. Overall I would say the class is pretty boring overall but very easy to get a good grade in.
Dr. Parr was my professor for Chem 105a and chem105b. She was very inspirational as a role model in chemistry and education and was a fair and just lecturer and grader.
Chem 205 Chemical Forensics class with her for a GE. was EASY. It has an online lab (simple math calculations and "detective like scenarios" ex: how did the person die? Poisoning? Fire? etc.) 3-4 exams in total, lowest exam grade is dropped. Exams took less than 30min to do if you memorize ppts No book needed, No prior chem knowledge needed.
Dr Parr was one of my favorite teachers at SC. She's very sweet and does a great job of working through examples in class. If you go to lectures, the exams are pretty straight forward. Chemistry is one of the hardest classes at SC but if you have to take it, get Parr!!! She's an angel.
She was very good at making complex topics similar, by explaining it in a very clear and organized manner. She always had a smile on her face and was excited about the topic at hand. A real great teacher would recommend.
I liked Dr. Parr, she was a great professor and helped us learn 105B, but the exams were fairly difficult because they were with Broyer's and the exams were somewhat confusing. I would take her over broyer. She is very nice. Requires a lot of work for the class.
Professor Parr was a great teacher for 115A. Her tests are fair; all of the information on them was very similar to the practice exams that she posts. Attendance is advised because she asks for participation through a clicker system, which counts as a small part of your grade. SI review sessions are very helpful, and labs are graded easily.
Dr. Parr is so nice! She explains everything well in the lectures and moves at a really reasonable pace. She gives you clicker questions in lecture but they're graded for participation, not accuracy. Tests are really similar to practice tests, and SI sessions are super helpful.
Great lecturer. All slides are online so I never really went to class. Tests are very fair. Taking Parr for 115A is the best way to get an A in freshman Chem. Despite being an Honors class, Parr's section is MUCH easier to succeed in than any of the 105As.
Really sweet and a good lecturer, would recommend if you need to take chem
This was a Chemical forensics GE where all the slides were online. The online labs can be somewhat confusing but the tests are super easy as long as you study the material. Attendance doesn't really matter, I only went to class occasionally and did well in the class.
pretty easy GE for physical science. lectures were boring & she basically reads off the slides. attendance not mandatory and everything on the tests are from the slides which are posted online. 3 midterms lowest one dropped. lab sections optional as labs are online. some of it can be challenging/confusing but the TAs are helpful if you ask them
IF YOU NEED A SCIENCE GE TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This is the EASIEST class for non science majors. Lowest test grade dropped, labs are all online so section is optional, two lowest lab grades dropped, and she posts practice tests online. It literally was a dream GE. Also Parr's lectures were not boring which was another plus!
Gen chem is notoriously hard, but Dr. Parr made 105b as simple as possible. You can tell she cares about her students, and is such a sweet lady. Her tests were usually straightforward, with a few exceptions. I do wish she posted more practice exams because having those extra problems would be nice.
I love Parr. Great lectures that are really clear. At first it may seem boring when she teaches material you already know but she really does know how to teach new material. I really understood everything she said. She made chem really enjoyable I really liked her. I recommend taking her class!!!
Great lectures - super informative. She is a little monotonous at times but 50 minute lectures arent painful. Much better than Broyer (seems more experienced). Had to pull in outside source study to pull an A, but its certainly possible. Parrs tests are fair.
I love her so much. She actually teaches you out of her passion for chemistry and teaching. She spends so much of her own time preparing for the discovery course just so we have a better learning experience. Her tests are fair, her group labs are an amazing experience in which you appreciate chemistry- especially after hell with skibo...
This professor is so bad. She is really easy though.
Dr. Parr is an amazing professor, she's so caring and approachable. Unfortunately, the chemistry classes are just super difficult because of all the intense pre-meds at USC, but Dr. Parr really tries to make it more manageable. Highly recommend the Discovery Course! It made lab way less stressful and didn't have NEARLY as much busy work.
Dr Parr really cured my PTSD to chem from 105a. She made the class so interesting and fun to take. And she is a really really nice teacher who's always smiling and ready for your question. I took the Discovery one which was much more fun than usual but it's still quite time-consuming since you need to self-study a lot.
Dr. Parr made me not hate chem after 105a. She uses flipped classroom for 105b discovery, which is very good if you make an effort to watch the videos before you come to lecture. She is very friendly and is happy to answer questions. Her tests are straightforward. If you feel like lectures can move too fast at times, this is a good class for you.
Dr. Parr is super sweet and approachable. She is accesible during office hours, pleasant to talk to, and makes class enjoyable. She clearly has a passion for teaching and it shows through her dynamic approach to the classroom. Would definitely recommend. Her tests are very fair. There is a lot of homework and extra work but it all genuinely helps.
The class itself is not as hard as Chem105a. She doesn't really lecture you concepts during the lecture period, so you end up not doing much during class. Go to office hours and the SI sessions for help (that's where I learned everything). Homework includes straightfoward problems. Lab periods usually get out early, and write ups are pretty short.
Took the Discovery course. Survived with SI & the textbook. Lectures were short clips online. Class time consisted of doing practice problems in manual & doing the exit tickets. Untraditional structure but if you put in effort after class then you'll be ok. Go talk to her if you need help! She cares a lot & will explain everything.
Dr. Parr was clear and considerably lenient in her grading. You could drop your lowest score in most assignment categories. Go to the supplemental instruction. Because it's a large class, Dr. Parr can't go through every problem in detail, so that's where the SI fills in. Group labs are the hardest, but most of them are typed and there's no prelab.
Parr does not make the class harder than it needs to be. Lectures are helpful, but success in the class will require self-studying. Labs run short and tend to be easy. Midterms are fair, and similar to the practice test. She is very nice and caring teacher.
Dr. Parr's discovery course is different than the traditional lecture, but it has way less busy work and is easier than 105b. Lecture videos not super helpful but TAs and Dr. Parr will explain anything. Read the textbook for practice problems.
I took the Discovery section, and I loved it! While the workload is kind of a lot (individual write-ups, homeworks, video quizzes) that's expected for genchem and they only help! For lecture and lab sections, you're in the lab, but you don't have to do pre and post labs which was LIFE changing. Please take this over regular 105b you won't regret
Dr. Parr was an amazing chemistry professor. She moves slowly and patiently through the material, so as long as you listen well during lectures, you have to do very little studying outside of class to do well. If you don't pay attention to lectures, catching up is not difficult either. She is a great lecturer, and her tests are straightforward.
Parr was truly the brightest person I have ever met in the chemistry department. She is so encouraging, and she truly cares about everyone. She literally restructured 105b to spark more interest in students. Shes not trying to trick you. If u can understand lecture and the practice exams, the real exams are straight forward. miss this class sm <3
Parr truly goes above and beyond to make chemistry understandable and interesting for us to learn. exams are mostly straightforward. doing her practice problems in lab manuals and suggested textbook problems and attending si will help you understand concepts. it's thanks to parr, the TA's and si leaders that helped make 105b an enjoyable experience
Dr. Parr was a fantastic professor. Her lectures are clear and concise with plenty of example problems. The textbook is good for extra practice, but not required to understand the material. Parr takes student input very seriously and is accommodating in regards to extenuating circumstances. Overall, she's simply an angel of a professor!
Jessica Parr is such an amazing professor! She is the only professor that I felt was genuinely understanding and empathetic during the transition to online classes due to the pandemic. Her lectures are very easy to understand and the tests are very reasonable. This woman deserves the world!
Dr. Parr cares about the needs of her students, especially in light of the difficult academic and personal situations we faced this semester due to COVID-19. Dr. Parr postponed the midterm we had to take in the midst of the chaos at school, and changed the online format at our request. She cares about her students and runs a fair class!
I don't have enough good things to say about Dr. Parr. She went out of her way to make online classes a positive experience, and she was always incredibly generous and thoughtful when it came to student needs. Everything she does is with the dual intention of our better understanding the material and also receiving the best grade outcomes.
Chem may not be for everyone, but put in the effort to learn and understand the subject because Parr genuinely cares about helping students to learn/understand the material. She really goes out of her way to make learning still worthwhile even in online session.
Dr. Parr went out of her way to improve the online learning experience. She is a really gentle and caring person, and very experienced at teaching and highly knowledgeable about chemistry. Really phenomenal course with her.
Dr. Parr is so sweet and caring. She has made online learning a thousand times better and is so understanding. The grading criteria is very clear. Labs are super chill. Shes made it so chem has been my least stressful class this semester.
Parr is awesome. She cares deeply about chem and she makes the class pretty enjoyable. Her video quizzes are super helpful, she answers questions in detail, and she gives great tips for calculations. This class has a lot of homework, but its all pretty easy. Tip: TAKE A LOT OF NOTES!!!
Dr. Parr is the most thoughtful and compassionate professor I've ever had. She's such a beautifully stark contrast to other science professors at USC. Rather than having big midterms and finals, we had homework and write-up assignments due every week and quizzes after each module we learned. She's very accommodating and wants to see you succeed.
No midterms or finals, but gives lots of homework (not hard). She is very accommodating and made online learning a lot more enjoyable. She does take a while to reply to emails though.
Literally the nicest prof at USC. Goes out of her way to explain things and make life easier on students, and no big assignments (largest assignment 5.55% of total). Go to office hours in order to understand where you went wrong, and watch SI lectures for extra practice. Online labs are annoying but manageable per you have a good TA NO SKIBO
The class was mostly busy work with everything contributing a bit to your grade. It does help reinforce the concepts. Dr. Parr was very knowledgeable and caring, trying to make the class as interesting and straightforward as possible considering the constraints on Zoom. Definitely one of my easiest classes this semester but required some effort.
Lots of work, but none of it is particularly difficult. Her video quizzes are helpful and often reflective of the weekly quizzes so it's important to take notes. Although she takes a while to respond to emails, she is accommodating and fair. Online labs are tedious but can be chill depending on the TAs. Overall a solid choice!
She adapted well to the online format. There are homework assignments, video quizzes, write-ups, quizzes, and labs every single week. She doesn't have midterms or a final which is amazing!! She only gives us weekly quizzes which aren't too bad, but must study to do well. Go to lectures, she grades participation with poll everywhere q's.
You have a lot of homework, it's not hard, but it will count a lot towards your final grade because there are no finals or midterms. Labs are very chill and never last the full session. Dr. Parr was great!
Lots of work, pretty time-consuming, and she's not the easiest grader. But, the class could be much worse so I'm not gonna complain. Not too bad.
she made lectures really interesting despite being on zoom. also there are no large exams. If you pay attention in class and put full effort into all her worksheets, you can get an A.
i loved prof parr. the grading is so clear. she is super accessible. although there are a lot of assignments, she gives clear instructions and it is easy to know when things are due. she teaches the material really well and she is so sweet.
There are like a billion small assignments due every week. Insanity, really, especially because some of them are on the last week's material and some are on the present week's. It's better to have these assignments instead of a final, but it can get overwhelming and it is very easy to miss deadlines. But, this was just because the class was online.
Amazing Lectures even over the zoom. Many homework assignments. Quizzes make you have to think. If you are ever lost in the middle of a semester, look at lectures/homeworks.
She's great. The only thing that would push me away from her is the fact that skibo is lab director for 105a, so i would recommend doing 115a if possible.
lectures are flipped which is nice so in class only practice problems are done. however, bryant only grades homework for completion so i would recommend her for this reason. quizzes are application based, but if you study the lectures and do practice problems you will be fine. i failed one quiz and still almost got an A because she drops one
Sweet woman, personally never took notes, just followed along on the handout and usually was sufficient to learn material. Never really studied too hard either besides doing the practice problems and still did pretty well. Homework is graded so do spend some time on that. Lecture recordings not bad but I'd rather go to class. Good choice for 105a
Professor Parr was a great teacher and I had a good and fairly easy time in her class. My one qualm is that we had a student teacher this semester and Parr never really made up for any deficits that caused, but other than that the homework and quizzes in this class were very doable. The textbook can be helpful but it is NOT actually required.
Professor Parr was great! The lectures were engaging and I liked her teaching style. She usually gives practice problems on BB accompanying the lectures afterwards which I highly recommend doing as they are good practice for quizzes. Homework and weekly summaries are due every week so make sure to keep up with those.
Professor Parr is adorable. There are 6 quizzes in a semester, not including the cumulative quiz (final), the lowest quiz grade will be dropped (excluding the final). She gives a lot of homework, but they are good practices. Her practice problems are honestly so helpful for the module quizzes in class. Go to SI sessions if you can, they are helpful
You will get what you put into the class. If you want an A you will get an A. Definitely a work heavy class with quizzes biweekly, but a very fair class.
Class was unnecessarily so much work. Take Bryant. No partial credit. 1 question wrong is automatically a B regardless of how trivial the mistake (ex: adding two decimals by accident etc). She does not care. There are so many assignments due like everyday. Don't get me wrong istill got high A and didn't find class hard but so stressful and annoying
Great choice! Parr was very sweet and organized with her class. Fair amount of homework/practice but it really helps you understand the material.
Professor Parr makes learning very easy because she goes slowly to make sure you understand how to get from the problem to the answer. Her tests are a bit hard though, but make sure you go over the practice tests before. Quizzes are pretty easy. You don't have to read the textbook. She is very accessible outside of class through email.
Love her. Watch a few 5 min. videos on the concept and do problems during lecture-- super efficient. HW is graded on accuracy, not completion, but it's not bad. Lowest quiz score is dropped. Easy final project. Also gives specific practice problems (not textbook problems like Bryant) for extra practice. This + SI = A. Student-teacher is not it..
My main gripe was that you were kind of teaching yourself the content rather than her. There still were video lectures and you can ask her questions during lab/lecture. Skibo is not lab director, so lab reports are so much easier compared to what Skibo assigned last semester. If you don't want to deal with Skibo, I recommend the discovery section.
This class is really excellent. Cannot recommend enough.
So easy
Dr. Parr is a great professor. Her lectures focus more on working through examples, but they are overall concise and clear. I found her exams to be harder than Krylov's, but both professors wants you to succeed. While lecture is mandatory, you don't have to go to get an A. Put the effort in.
I absolutely love Professor Parr! You watch videos ad do little homework quizzes before the class the next day which prepares you. You get multiple chances on the quizzes as well. She explains very well and is open to questions during lectures. If you do the video quizzes and weekly homework assignments on time, you can easily ace her class
Parr took over Bryant's section when she left for CalTech mid-semester. I actually liked Parr's teaching style more, she had guided note sheets which you fill out during lecture and have questions to follow along. Exams were well written and overall she's a nice lady. No curve so raw scores matter!
Parr is everything you expect out of a sufficient chemistry professor. She's super sweet and will be pretty standard. If you took AP or IB HL chem then this will be a breeze. just make sure you don't underestimate the first major quiz.
professor parr structures her lectures so that you are working on a worksheet per lecture session. if you are the type of student who prefers examples of problems, then professor parr's lectures would be great for you! she also provides helpful practice worksheets to prepare for quizzes. unlike bryant, parr's homeworks are graded based on accuracy.
I thought Parr was kind of inaccessible and rude. She took FOREVER to respond to emails, and she was not very welcoming or helpful during office hours. The class is easy enough. Just watch the videos, do the textbook problems, and do her worksheets and you'll be all set for an A.
I didn't particularly like the way the course was structured. Before every class, you have to watch a short video and take a quiz on it, and during class, all that Professor Parr would do is solve worksheets. It seemed like we were supposed to learn the material ourselves, and she would just show us how to solve problems
I am in the discovery section and I have taken her 105a class as well. I don't like the reverse class style and she does not teach in both 105A and B. This class is doable but try to avoid her and choose other professors.
A lot of tests but if she gives tons of practice problems that replicate what is going to be on the test so definitely do them. I recommend going to class so you don't get lost, but it really isn't necessary.
Took Dr. Parr's CHEM105b Discovery class this last semester. She doesn't take attendance, and you do worksheets in lab during every MWF class, which sometimes have a wet lab component but are honestly mostly skippable if you keep up on your own. The actual lab section is wayyy easier than Dr. Skibo's. Grading is buffered by a lot of easy points.
Dr. Parr sets up the class so that anyone can succeed if they put in enough time. Her lecture videos aren't very helpful but she provides so many studying materials and practice problems that you'll know pretty much exactly what will be on the test so it's really up to you to prepare. Very kind/approachable and able to give help if needed.
This class is so easy with Parr
Parr is a really clear lecturer and teacher. She responds to emails well. The only thing is that she's pretty cold to her students. First half of Chem 115B was way easier w her as a teacher
Parr is a really great professor. Her grading is fair and her online lecture videos are very helpful for learning content before you attend the in person lectures. The in class experiments are a little boring, but Parr does a really great job of helping students understand the topic conceptually. Take her if you can, she's amazing.
TAKE PARR'S CLASS IF YOU CAN YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I was really nervous for my chemistry class at USC, but she's actually such a great professor. She responds to emails really quickly, she welcomes questions, she's easy to talk to, and it's just overall a pretty fun time. I'm going to miss not having Parr for ochem :(( THank you Dr. Parr!!
Professor Parr made the class easy, but lectures were quite boring. If you have a decent understanding of chemistry you can skip some lectures and be fine. Her slides are quite helpful.
Parr is a very nice professor, and her video lectures are very helpful. However, her in-person lectures are somewhat lacking in effectiveness. In fact, I ended up not attending any lecture outside of the first month after realizing this, and I was still able to end with an A. Chem 105b is tough, but she offers a lot of assignments to pad your grade
DISCOVERY 105B!!! Take it if you want to avoid Skibo labs and are able to learn on your own/with friends. Didn't ever feel like I was taught anything in this course directly because of discovery but it was pretty easy if you just look at the notes and work on it yourself. take discovery if you can bc it was a breeze
Had her for both 105A and 105b discovery, could not recommend her enough!! Great teacher who will take the time to explain concepts if you need help! If you have experience with AP/IB Chem her class in a breeze, those without struggled a bit more but still are able to pull through with an A.
Had her for both CHEM105A and 105B (non-discovery) and she was phenomenal. Lectures are clear and always related to what will be on the tests, weekly homework is practice problems. Weekly HW + 4 "midterms" + cumulative final for this class, but if you've taken AP or an equivalent class, should be a breeze. SI is very helpful, great class overall.
Everyone knows that chem is hard, and be prepared to constantly have assignments to do. Parr is a gem and is so sweet, and she's a really clear lecturer.
Best Professor by far. She has a standard slide deck, but breaks down hard concepts in a way anyone can understand. If you don't, send her an email and she will find a way to make sure you know whats going on. Amazing professor!
This class was really easy. Dr. Parr posts the slides on Blackboard, and the exams are very straightforward. If you study and do practice questions from the textbook, it is possible to receive a high A on every exam. She is also very friendly. Highly recommend Dr. Parr as a professor for 105A.
Incredible professor. Great lectures on difficult topics, and even better 1:1. Go to her office hours if you are struggling! She is sweet and genuinely wants her students to learn. You can tell she loves her subject and her job, and it reflects in her teaching. Chem is hard, she makes it better
Parr isn't a bad option for chem. You may get a worse grade in her class because she doesn't curve the class for some reason (even though the averages are typically in C-B range on tests) and if you have a harsh TA grader for lab it's a lot harder to get an A-/A. Her tests were pretty challenging, but challenging in a good way. She's a good prof.
Be aware that Chem105b is a lot harder and time consuming than 105a. Just something to keep in mind when you make your schedule. Parr is not horrible tho and I would recommend her despite not having a curve in her class.
A LOT of work especially with lab. But if you at least do all the weekly work it's impossible to not do well. I hadn't taken chem in two years and still got an A in this course. The practice problems from lecture are a carbon copy of whats on the midterms. Homeworks are slightly harder. More computational focused than conceptual.
This class is the definition of busy work. BUT Parr makes it bearable because she has so many resources available and she is really sweet. The class is easy but make sure to not fall behind on the assignments. I got an A, two A-, one B (quizzes) and an A- on the final and finished with an A. There is no curve and I got lucky with easy lab graders.
Dr Parr is amazing! Chemistry can be hard, but her lectures are easy to understand. Even if you don't get it in class, she is very accessible through email and office hours. Quizzes can be difficult, but they are fair. Lots of supplemental assignments to pad your grade. Overall, take her if you can!
Dr. Parr is an extremely considerate and approachable professor who legitimately helps you understand the material. The only issue I had was the relatively heavier amount of weekly work compared to courses like CHEM 105a. That said, more weekly work equates to more free points, so it isn't too bad if you head into this course with that mindset.
AMAZING TEACHER. explains so well and slowly to the students. you still have to study and do all your work-but its super easy to end with an A-just dont fall behind and youll be fine.
An amazing professor. If you have to take chem105a, do not hesitate for a second! She makes the lectures very interesting and her tests aren't that hard. The grades ended up being curved.
Smooth experience unless you have to interact with her. Cold and dismissive when you ask for help. Mean or unresponsive through email. A lot of assignments, but they help keep you on top of the material. Tests were always harder than the practice tests. Lab is the real terror of 105b though.
Parr is very caring and transforms difficult concepts into easier ones. There are somewhat lots of assignments, but they help build your grade up. My only problem with this class was that it's hard to prepare for the exams, since they are a lot harder than the practice tests and no assignment really prepares you for the difficulty of the tests.
Lectures and quizzes are straightforward. Concepts are not terribly difficult but can be heavy. Accessible through office hours and email. Good option for 105A.
Professor Parr is super organized with weekly lectures and associated assignments. Work and tests are aligned with other chem105a lecturers. Parr is pretty sweet and caring - lectures also good
Dr. Parr is a great lecturer and makes complex topics clear. We walk through practice problems every session so lectures are engaging and helpful, and they set us up for the test. Ample practice opportunities and no trick questions. Went to her office hrs once and she was nice. Would recommend SI as well just to solidify concepts
THE GOAT
CHEM 108 is the chemistry sequence for chemistry & biochemistry majors. The class was not very difficult (other than the beginning part involving MOs), and the exams were fair. However, the final was very dense and hard, so try to do very well before the final. Dr. Parr was our lab instructor, and she was very hands-off. The TAs did the work.
Lectures were concise and to the point. Did not have demonstrations like Dr. Krylov and Dr. Reisler, but was still an engaging lecturer. Her test questions were very fair and covered basically what she covered in lecture. Was responsible for the lab portion of our class for first semester and most of the second semester. Very fair lab grading.
Parr is an amazing and organized lecturer. Her focus constantly was to get us engaged and excited about learning chemistry. Materials were conveyed in a cohesive manner that more or less built upon the previous unit.
parr teaches in a weird way and the content is not linked clearly from week to week, but the guided reading notes and weekly problems ensure that you dont fall back. A lot of work but midterms are relatively straight forward.
She was great! Definitely one of my favorite professors so far! Her lectures were very clear and easy to follow. Most of the content was identical to high school AP chemistry so if you've taken that, you'll be set. Exams were very fair and pretty straightforward. Highly Recommend!!
Love Dr. Parr. Amazing lectures and makes everything easily comprehensible. Very similar to AP Chem. If you have taken it in the past, the class should be a breeze. Really accessible outside of class and is always willing to help.
Exam questions are very straightforward and similar to daily assignments. Overall her lectures were fine. Definitely take Parr for Chem 105a.
Was rough but hoping for the best….
One of the best lecturers OAT. Tests were pretty hard, but, as long as you study 10+ hours you're chilling. (Most students in this class study 20+ hours for one test it's crazy). Gives very strong core for chemistry.
She's great content is based off the lectures. Textbook is needed but she does guided readings for a completion grade. There are so many points that are just given to you by doing the work. The content in my opinion was also super easy so if you do the reading you can probably get away with missing the lecture. Lectures are extremely clear.
Professor Parr was great! Her lectures were straightforward, and I liked her fun little demonstrations. For exams, they are for the most part straightforward and if you study enough you will be fine. Overall, very good professor and I would definitely take her again!
Easiest chem ever. I didn't go to any lectures and got a 100 on every exam. Tests were fair and lectures were clear. Parr responded to all of my emails asap. Final was also super easy. The hard part about 105a is lab but that isn't parr's fault.
note: ppts, worksheets, hw, and exams are all standardized across the different profs for chem105a. nothing too bad, coming from someone who didn't take AP chem! dr. parr made the material super manageable, i appreciate that she worked out all the example problems for us during lecture. curved in fall 2023!
she was nice but chem 105a was just a heavy workload. the way she taught also didn't make sense as she would jump around from concept to concept with no clear throughline. do the daily assignments, and weekly problems and you'll be fine. not great but not bad either
Parr's lectures are decent, but she is very helpful when asking specific questions and answering emails. Most of the class is just practice problems, so if you can follow along and replicate, you will be fine. The labs and quizzes are a fair bit of work, but nothing crazy. Lectures have live polls, so you need to go, but missing one is usually ok.
Parr is a great lecture professor. She's always prepared, answers questions, and is straightforward. Read your textbook and complete the guided reading notes—they're easy ways to maintain a high grade.
Great lectures, explains concepts super clearly. Wish I hadn't slept through half the classes, then I probably would have ended with an A.
Dr. Parr is caring for students and makes the chemistry content easy to digest in lectures. Go to lecture and understand the content of each part of the course and you'll do good in lecture, not sure about lab
Dr. Parr is a good lecturer for this class and I felt the tests were very fair, not too difficult but not too easy. Because of this don't expect a curve and the homework was kinda a lot but very manageable. Definitely the best Chem 105 lecturer.
Overall, Dr. Parr is amazing!
Very clear and easy grading! Her presentations are easy to understand and Dr. Parr really goes out of her way to make the nightmare that is chemistry digestible. She offers notes and daily assignments that are free points towards your grade. With proper studying and time management, she can be one of the easier science classes you take!
She is a really good prof. I did not know anything about chem going into the course and feel good about it now. Tests are not hard if you are comfortable with the content, never any surprises. Parr is not involved with the lab ran by Skibo whatsoever, so really no complaints at all. Has some easy nightly homework to boost your grade and is fair.
Dr. Parr is the best option for any gen chem class! She is kind & always posts the notes. She is clear & offers many examples in class. Grade is padded by daily HW & reading notes (bless). Cumulative final was rough but all other exams were easy-ish if you went to lecture & did the practice problems from the book & HW. Can't recommend her enough!
parr is such a queen especially after taking some other chem teachers here i really appreciate her and her teaching methods/tests. thoroughly explained notes (and posted), straightforward tests, wants students to succeed. def the best pick for105a!!
I love Professor Parr! She always has so much excitement for chemistry and gets really excited for demonstrations. My one complaint is that a lot of the SI sheets have wrong answers or incorrectly printed questions, and they're what I would say the best way to study, but admittedly I don't know how much Parr is responsible. Def take this prof!
probably the best out of all 105a profs. tests are hard but just study A LOT and you'll be okay.
This is a good class for introductory chemistry. Dr. Parr's lectures help significantly when it comes to solving problems, and her quizzes mirror the demo questions. There's homework before and after most lectures, but it is quite manageable and is not that difficult. You learn the concepts, but I did not feel particularly inspired by the class.
Dr. Parr is thoughtful and clearly cares about her students, even in large lectures. The workload is significantly less than other 105A classes, and more helpful. If you can, definitely take her class!
It's just a hard class but she's very good and explaining stuff clearly and answering questions. You have to actually listen and do the work but if you do you should be fine. Her tests were very straightforward and exactly the kind of problems we would do in class or for homework. She never tried to trick you.
Parr did an amazing job leading lectures and explaining concepts. Test were like homework questions so they were fairly easy.
Good at explaining new chemistry topics if you never took chemistry in high school. Exams are fair and easy.
If you took AP Chem and paid attention, CHEM 105A with Parr is a breeze. I didn't go to a single lecture and still got an A. Everything is in the slides + practice. HW 3x/week but only ~8 questions, and she drops ~10 lowest scores. Exams are fair. Lab is the only thing you can't slack on.
After a terrible experience with Chem in HS, Parr revived my love for Chemistry. Clear expectations, straightforward lectures, doesn't try to trick you. Not too much work, and regardless, you should be doing all the work anyway to practice. Exams are straightforward as well. Best option for 105A by far, pick her no questions asked.
Dr. Parr is definitely the best choice for chem. Kind, understanding, and reasonable. Tests straightforward and identical to material on slides, easy to do well with proper studying. Wish she was teaching 105b next semester
Dr. Parr is really kind and I really enjoyed her class. Her classes were a breeze and the midterm tests were also pretty simple and straightforward. I wish the final was as easy as the midterm but the quizzes and Homeworks were pretty fun. I really wish she was teaching CHEM-105B next semester :(
I would 100% recommend Dr. Parr for any chemistry class! Her teaching style is so down-to-earth and understandable. I had no issues with the coursework. As long as you do your worksheets, homework, and put in the time to study, you should have no problems in this course! She is very caring and sweet. I wish she would teach all my chem classes!
She's a great professor! She's accessible with helpful TAs. I've never taken chemistry, and Parr made it easy to understand. Quizzes can be retaken, not all assignments have to be done.
