Best bio teacher at UB thus far.
Dr. Poulin is amazing. She makes Bio super fun and is always engaging and concise. I've only had her class for less than 3 weeks but I know I'm going to enjoy going there! Get in her class at all costs and make sure to sit in the front!
she is great!!! she is funny, to the point and extremely willing to answer questions immediately if there are any. if you're going to take bio, try to get her. you wont regret it.
Dr. Poulin is great. She explains everything clearly, and she is eager to answer student's questions. By far my favorite teacher this semester.
i've never had a bio teacher that actually knew what she was talking about, but you do and you make it fun
I absolutely despise Biology and most science courses. Dr. Poulin actually makes Biology interesting. THAT makes a great teacher. Good Job! Two thumbs up.
One word: Awesome.
Dr. Poulin is truly a wonderful teacher. She's passionate about the subject material and makes class very interesting. Also very funny and down to earth.
AWESOME!
Teaches very well and in a fun way too! e.g. C if for conifers.
This professor is extremely helpful. She knows what she is talking about and she makes class so interesting! By far the best evolutionary bio teacher at UB! Her tests are very fair; they're easy enough to not have a curve. I highly recommend her!
lectures are interesting and she keeps them short enough that you don't loose interest. very helpful and willing to help you outside of class
Brilliant teacher, actually knows what she is doing. However, her tests don't correlate well to the practice questions. Average is around a 60 and she says there were be no curve. My only gripe is that she seems to over-emphasize things, but not test them... rather she tested on the less discussed topics.
Amazing teacher! Easy to follow keeps class interesting!! TAKE HER!! You will love her!!
nice teacher, short classes, easy going personality. her tests don't match up with her notes. she tests on what she says in her lectures - stuff she does NOT emphasize in class. Her notes don't prepare you for anything! this something hard to handle for some like me because i take written work more seriously than what is lightly covered verbally.
Best professor I've had yet! Lectures are extremely interesting! Exams are fine as long as you study!
She is an excellent speaker, speaks w/crystal clear quality. Her exams are harder than you would expect. As previously mentioned by others, she hardly have questions on things she emphasized upon. Tests can be hard, but u would need to read the text as well as attend all lectures in order to get an A.U won't get bored in her class. I highly recomme
While she is a great teacher and speaker as well, she makes her tests extremely hard and most of the questions are about tiny insignificant things compared to her lectures. Also, she has different terminology for things in the lab manual so you have to learn both terminologies. Notes r useless, just study from the lab manual and listen to lecture
Coolest teacher i've ever had she is very excited to be there which makes it better for you. You will not need to look at the textbook at all just go to lecture. Tests are on lecture however questions aren't just repeat what she told you .... they make you think, (welcome to college)
Very clear when teaching. She added interesting details and stories in class to keep us energized and help us remember facts. I looked forward to going to class, because I knew Dr. Poulin would not simply restate information of out the textbook. Her tests, which were fair, reflected what was taught in class. Take her!
omg Poulin is HILARIOUS!! Such a good professor, lectures are really interesting and her tests are really fair. Go out of your way to have her, she is amazing!!
She is a great profesor with awesome teaching skill!! She is extremely helpful and nice!! Make sure to choose her section if you are going to take BIO 200!!
Dr. Poulin is awesome! She's fun and makes class enjoyable. Go to class, take notes and go to her office hours if you have questions. If you have to take BIO200 take it with her!
Evolutionary Bio is not an easy course. Dr. Poulin put the uber-specific terms and details she mentioned in lecture on the exams, while the more difficult things in the book hardly ever showed up. No need to go to lectures - just listen to them online, but know those lectures WELL, the info will be on the exams.
The class is insanely hard to begin with. People say she's a great lecturer, I don't see it. Passed out most days even with a cup of coffee. Her tests will contain questions that she may glance by ONCE in lecture. I bombed every test, probably even the final, but manage to catch a curve.
She is the best! The lecture is very fun and you can make alot friends in the class. If you need help, she is always there for you. I Highly recommend you to take her class.
Pretty much the best professor to have for this class. However, that does not mean she is easy. Tests are HARD and you will have to devote hours upon hours of study time. This is a weed-out course to discourage Freshmen who want to major in Biological Sciences but AREN'T WILLING TO PUT IN THE WORK! Good riddance in my opinion ;-)
Exams are VERY WORDY. She'd put info that is irrevelant to mislead & waste most of the 50 mins that u have for the exam. Can always follow up with audio recordings for lectures, but don't rely on it (technology problems). Study everything from lecture cuz she writes lectures ahead, word-for-word,& reads it w/emphasis. class knocks out Doc wannabes.
very clear and concise. a lot of material but she creates outlines only had her for a few weeks now but shes pretty good. also very attractive
Dr. Poulin is a great professor and really knows what she's talking about as well as making little jokes to keep it fun. She talks insanely fast which makes it hard to take notes but the lectures are recorded so you can go back to them later. You won't use the book at all, don't bother buying it. Lab was easy but TAs Justin & Eneda were awful.
Professor Poulin is an excellent teacher and made a typically boring class rather interesting. Although the course material isn't extremely interesting, Poulin teaches TO you instead of AT you. Text book not required and lectures are posted online. Exams are inferential instead of straight fact and are not easy. However, a notes sheet is permitted.
provides everything you need to succeed
Dr. Poulin is one of the few professors that can keep my attention for the entire class period. Her lectures are organized well and engaging, and her stretch breaks allow you to reset your brain. Her tests are extremely wordy and require some critical thinking, but hey, it's college. The labs are completely useless, you won't learn anything.
good teacher, but test questions are really hard
This teacher is the by far the worst teacher I have ever seen. I'm passing the course but even so her exams are a *!@#, they have nothing to do with class. She easily takes down any aspiring doctors, if u have a choice dont take her. IDK what these other people say but this is definately not a teacher a freshman should take.
I think she is a great professor who actually cares about her students. She goes out of her way making sure everyone understands the material and makes herself available when you do not understand some part of the material. I recommend her to everyone! One of the best UB professors!
Dr. Poulin puts the "fun" in "fungi". She really should be a part-time comedian. Her lectures are really interesting and she always has a break in the middle. You don't even have to go to class because she posts the lectures online to watch. She's very intelligent and passionate about her subject. Tests are hard but there are Harry Potter reference
She's the "easy" professor of the three that teach BIO 200. That said, this course is very hard! She's very reasonable though and genuinely wants students to succeed. My only complaint is that she sometimes asks very abstract or obscure questions on the exam. We don't even have the dreaded lab practical. Do your work, overall a very good choice!
She is one of the hottest teachers hahaha, well anyway, her class is hard like any other bio class, but she lets us have a cheat sheet for each test, written out front and back of 1 regular sized piece of paper....do the appropriate studying and the class will be a piece of cake, also get the right TA and you'll be fine, since lab is 50% of grade
Do NOT take this professor. No matter how well you know the material her tests test your ability to take tests, not your knowledge of the subject. This is coming from someone who is most likely going to end up with an A in this class and I wouldn't take her again no matter what. Her lecture may be intersting but her tests are incredibly tricky.
First, study the lectures. Second, study the lectures. Thrid, study the lectures!!! Try to learn the test taking strategies before you take the exam. Sometimes you just have to guess what she will put the answer as. Very hard course&exams. Interesting lectures.
I agree that this class is all about knowing how to take her tests. First you need to know the material top to bottom, but most importantly you need to know how to take her tests. If you can score 10-15 points above average on all the exams then you have a good shot at an A/A-.
The material itself isn't overwhelming, it's her tests that are ridiculous. She is one of those teachers that is out to trick you with her tests, because they are all conceptual and really long, so that by the end of the question, you're more lost than you were before you read it. Don't take her class. It is a mind-boggler.
DO NOT take this class because it is impossible to pass ANY of her tests. After reading her test questions, you are completely lost and dont even know what she is asking in the first place.
She really give you all the tools to succeed in her class. She video/audio records all her classes, holds reviews on fridays, gives practice questions on every section and provides previous exams. It is true her test are tricky, she loves to give long questions that tend to confuse most people, and frankly 50mins are not enough to take her exams.
She is a great teacher but you must put in alot of work too. Her lectures are very organized and interesting. She is very helpful in office hours. Her tests are difficult because you must pay close attention to detail and read quickly. In order to do well you have to listen to lecture multiple times, do practice questions and ask her for help
Interesting lecture, difficult labs, INSANE tests. This class is basically a weeder course. Be prepared to give up your social life or any remainder of it if you want a high grade.
The material in the class is boring and the tests are insane, but she is a good teacher and i feel I learned allot from her. He is fun to listen to and passionate about the material. Know that this is a hard class and you will need to put in effort.
Yes, this is a hard class. However, she is an amazing teacher and made the class really interesting, and I don't think i've ever learned so much from one class before. The poor ratings on here are probably those who got bad grades, it takes a LOT of work, but it's definitely possible to do well in her class if you put in the work.
It's hard, but I think she's really working to prepare us for college and to *think* in a way I don't see with my other science courses. Just put in the time and you'll do well.
She is awesome teacher. It's my second time taking it n I learn a lot compare from Herreid class. She explain very clearly and if u pay attention, everything is on the test.Even though, tests r long questions, but they make sense.I'm not a Bio student at all especially Evo,but Dr. Poulin is better than the others. Take her if you can!!
Wonderful teacher. Does not require a textbook. Keeps lectures interesting and fun. Can have wordy test questions, but overall very fair.
Easily the best teacher I've ever had at UB. Down to earth, funny and keeps things interesting. Tests can be tricky, but she provides more than enough resources to succeed in this course.
Hard tests (tricky), fun lecture, go over her stuff a few times and your good to go, lets you use a cheat sheet =]
I will never skip Dr. Poulins lectures, even though attendance isn't mandatory. She's hilarious and she knows how to present the material so that it's interesting. She reviews everyother week which is very helpful. I would highly recommend taking her course.
Best professor i've had, but you need to work for your grade.Tests are tricky but she gives you absolutely everything you need to do well (cheat sheet, practice tests, lecture guides, office hours ect), anyone who fails didn't try hard enough. Also hilarious and makes harry potter references on her test! makes a potentially boring class fascinatin
Fun teacher, great teacher in fact. Slides are easy to follow but most info comes from her. Tests are very hard. Hard to fail the class, but also hard to exceed. 4 ests, 1 and 2 are on specific parts of the lecture, 3rd is cumulative on lecture, 4 is lab final. Cheat sheets for them all, but even with that you'll find these tests rough
You guys are making this class seem impossible. Most of you are probably are not used to a class that requires SOME effort. I honestly treated this as a high school class and still manage to beat the average on every exam, and get a very good grade in lab; lab section is worth more than lecture. Cheat sheets make it pretty easy. Just takes effort.
Dr. Poulin is a great professor, tests are hard but lab counters that. I did barely any studying and got a B-. Don't buy the book, it's expensive and tests are based on lectures. Take Poulin's class if you have the chance!
This class isnt impossible but its hard and you really have to work to get an A. Youre allowed a tip sheet on every test which is nice and she records the lectures and puts it online. I would listen to the lectures even if you attended the class. I would recommend Poulin over all the other Bio 200 professors--shes approachable, fair, and funny.
Dr. Poulin is great. She gives you everything that you need to get a good grade, its just up to you how much effort to put in. Her tests are hard and questions are usually long situation as opposed to straight forward facts. I got a 76, 48, 67 on all the exams (84 Lab Final) and got an even B in the course. No required textbook. Loads of fun.
DR. POULIN IS SUPERB! One of the best at UB for sure. She makes lectures interesting with anecdotes about her family or info about bizarre organisms. LISTEN TO LECTURE AUDIO POSTED ONLINE - she talks fast. Don't buy the lecture guide or "recommended" book. DON'T RELY ON CHEAT SHEETS - study REALLY hard to know the material and an A is yours.
Amazing Professor!!! There is a lot of material and you have to work hard in order to achieve an A, but its definitely obtainable. I ended up getting an A because i went over and listened to her audio/video recordings! Probably one of the best professors you will find at UB! You are going to miss her when this class is over!
Amazing professor! Very interesting lectures and she does a great job in making you understand. Please do take her, you'll not regret.
Great Professor!! She tells you everything you need to know for the test in the lecture. She gives you a study guide for each lecture and holds helpful office hours. She's very helpful and approachable.
Poulin's section is probably the best out of the three Evo. Bio teachers. She is friendly and always willing to help you. Go to her office hours if you need help with anything. However, her tests are pretty challenging at times so make sure you do heavy preapration before her tests. Lab for this class will help boost your grade.
Don't buy the book, it is completely useless. The lecture guide is absolutely the best creation ever. Buy it, use it, sleep with it next to your pillow. It is the key to getting an A. Her lectures are incredible! One of my favorite professors of all time.
Probably one of the best professors I have had so far! Dr. Poulin is enthusiastic about the subject and makes the class interesting. I would recommend her above the other BIO200 professors. I did not buy the book, but I did use the lecture guide.
Dr. Poulin was so interactive with her students. She really makes everything clear. All I will say is don't bother buying the textbook... I never touched mine.
Favorite professor at UB so far. Doesn't put me to sleep or anything. Her lectures are very planned out and you can tell she loves Evolutionary Biology. Definitely buy a lecture guide. Ive never gone to her office hours or anything but from her review days I can tell she's really helpful
Dr. Poulin is the best teacher i have ever had. She is a true nerd at heart but she is the most genuinely nice person i have ever met. She really goes out of her way if you have a problem or are struggling. Her office hours are awesome, she really knows her stuff. She prepares you for lab a lot. And buy the lecture book it is my life savior! :)
Poulin's class is very interesting. Informative lecture so pay attention and take great notes. She provides slides and audio links online which are very helpful. Evolutionary bio is a difficult course in general so you need to study for that course. Also, do not buy the textbook! Buy her lecture guide and lab manual. I suggest you take her class!
Dr. Poulin is my favorite professor so far in UB. Her classes are highly organized and she explained everything crystal clear. Didn't buy the textbook but did buy the lecture guide. Never memorize her material, you have to really understand the concept and everything. Exam questions are tricky but if you pay enough attention, you are fine.
One of the better professor at UB. I would definitely recommend her. Her exams are tough but manageable
This class is really hard, but it's entirely possible to get a high grade in this class. Know the lecture material from each lecture and consistently review it and use lab to bring up your grade. Your grade depends on how you are in relation to the class average. Hope for a dumb class. The curve for fall '11 was <10 points.
Evo Bio is really hard, but if you get Poulin you are very lucky. She is so nice and so helpful. Just pay attention, take good notes and do really good in lab and you'll be able to get a good grade.
BEST TEACHER AT UB. She puts hours into her lectures to make sure you understand, and it very funny! Get the lecture guide!! And go to office hours, she gives out test hints there! Lots of material, but Poulin makes sure you can get it all!
Dr. Poulin is a fantastic teacher!I highly recommend her. She is so organized and truly loves teaching. Even though evo bio is a challenging course she makes it interesting. She published a lecture guide that goes along with the course. Its very helpful and has all the info outlined out along with practice questions.Go to office hours and work hard
Dr. Poulin is the best teacher ever! If you have an option take her! Be sure to keep up with the class and go to office hours and the A is yours! Also i would definitely suggest getting the lecture guide, it is a great tool to help you outline the course.
Everyone should take a class with her, makes the subject a lot more interesting than it really is.
Everything that is barely described in lecture will be on your exams. She's extremely tricky, and the exams are VERY hard. You will be fooled on multiple questions. Studying takes at least 12 hours minimum. Extremely hard class.
i would recommend this professor her class is easy if u look over the lecture slides and study using her audio recordings. she lets you use cheat sheets for her exams(around 30 questions MC).
She is briliant, teaches pretty well, and will not hesitate to help you if you go to her.
extremely hard professor. dont take her if you dont have to. take some other professor. she made me hate biology!!!!!!
This is a do-able class. It requires a lot of work though so don't complain if you get a bad grade yet don't do the work. Buy the lecture guide, and LISTEN to the audio recordings online and write everything down from there. Most of her test answers are the precise details of things she spends little time on in lecture, so use the recordings.
Most dedicated professor I've had yet. Lectures are clear and recorded so you can pause to take notes as its quite fast paced at times. Know the material in the lecture guide, don't bother with the book. There are practice exams and questions in the book, do them. very similar to actual exam. Exams are not hard, and you can use a note sheet.
Great professor, the tests are very frustrating because she tries to trick you but you are pretty much guaranteed to learn. I didn't use the textbook, just listened to the lecture slides online and took notes. The lab in general, especially the quizzes are a little ridiculous, however if you spend maybe 30mins studying beforehand you will do fine.
Dr. Poulin is one of the best, if not the best, professor I have taken a class with at UB. She cares about her students, is willing to talk about whatever you may need help with, and her 50 minutes lectures fly by! There is a fair amount of work in this class, but as long as you attend every lecture, exams are not terribly difficult.
She is great. I really loved her. Her tests can be tricky but study the lectures hard and take good notes and you will do fine. She moves quick but I liked her style and was able to keep up. (write important parts) She is very nice, friendly, approachable, and helpful. I loved this class because of her.
Dr. Poulin is a perfect person. She's got brains, looks and is extremely organized. Her tests are out to get you. Some of her questions are about a paragraph long. Don't buy the textbook but buy her guide, go to lecture, with the slides. Listen to the lecture again online and fill in the study book. You'll get an A if you do all those things.
Dr. Poulin has a script that she brings to class that she reads directly from for lecture, resulting in her reading incredibly fast. Her slides have very little on them, so it forces you to try to catch all of the information she spews at you. It's a format that doesn't foster learning. I'd recommend a different professor.
Dr Poulin is a no-nonsense teacher. But she is very willing to help students out if they come to her. She speaks fast during her lectures but all of them are recorded and available online. Tests are HARD however she does allow a cheat sheet.
She's an absolute sweetheart if you have any Bio 200 teacher take her, she's not at all easy so if your looking for an easy A you won't find one with her by any means but she is by far the best at teaching the material and she's very passionate about her field and it shows, study hard and know everything and you'll be fine.
Dr.Poulin is a good and fair professor, she is willing to help her students at any time. But it is not an easy course at all, tests are tricky and hard. Try to study hard before the test use lecture audio and textbook. Also it will be easier to do well on lab which can make up the final grade. Overall it will be fine if you spend times on the course.
Textbook is not needed, at all. Don't waste your money. Everything that will be tested is contained in her lecture. She throws a lot of information at you in a hasty way, so it's hard to keep up. Other than that, she's a passionate and informative teacher. Of the three units in the class (Evolution, Diversity, Ecology), diversity is the toughest.
She is the nicest lady! Super organized. Puts slides online. Don't leave her review lectures, she gives you test answers! Didn't touch the textbook. Tests are difficult, don't take her for granted. You need to put work into the class and study. She gives you cheat sheets, but know your stuff. I got a B-, crammed all lectures on cheat sheets.
Poulin is super nice and super helpful. Her tests are very hard and confusing. She allows a cheat sheet but it doesn't help at all. But other than that she is awesome. Go to her office hours, she will tell you everything that will be on the test
She's a perfect person. Of all the professors I've had, none of them have been as helpful as she was (especially with 300+person class). She knows how to break down complex material and make it understandable. Her tests are tricky and the class is a lot of work but it's not impossible to get done. Overall a great teacher and an amazing person.
She's super nice and passionate about the course. Relisten the lesctures online and take detailed notes. This course is hard because there's so much information, but at least you get a cheat sheet.
good professor.
Amazing Teacher, She is passionate and patient about what she teaches, also she knows HOW to teach. Her methods are great for slower learners like I, Wish she taught all my classes. I also would try to pick up lecture guide and office hrs are a must. Itll pay off.
Went to a lecture of Doctor Poulin''s over the summer and when I came to UB I switched into her lecture class. Best thing I''ve done with my schedule at UB. She is extremely bright her lectures are not boring she''s very willing to help you herself and so are her wonderful TA''s. Lecture is recorded but definitely go to the lecture in person. A+
She's great
Its easy to tell that dr. poulin is very smart and very passionate about teaching. Overall, she is a very friendly and approachable professor who would want nothing more for than her students to succeed. However, when it comes to test, good luck. Questions are very specific and are meant to challenge you. Must put in the time to get a B or above
Honestly the best professor I've had hands down. I credit her for class for teaching me how to study. Not only is she one of the most intelligent professors, she's funny, and her lectures are online. I highly recommend the lecture guide and rewatching lectures as she puts a lot of information into 50 minutes.
BEST CLASS I took this semester. Dr. Poulin is enthusiastic about what she teaches and keeps us engaged in lecture. She is really funny and is always available during office hours. BIO 200 is not difficult if you put your time into the material. Her office hours, re-listening to lectures, using the lecture guide really helped! Amazing professor!
Poulin will always help you out when you need it. The class is hard but she makes it a lot more interesting and lectures really fly by. Make sure you put in the effort for this class or else you will suffer. If your cheat sheets are dank you can easily get a B for the course.
Go to lectures and you're set for the class. Overall a good teacher who makes the class interesting.
Make sure to relisten to lectures and start the cheat sheet for the exams ahead of time. There are three units- evolution, diversity, ecology. If you want to get an A, try your hardest to get a good grade on the first exam-it's the easiest. Diversity is the toughest, and people get all sorts of grades for the final.
You have to really try to earn a good grade. Ask for help when you need it and you will be likely to succeed. Good luck on her exams though. Nothing can help you there.
Poulin's exams are fair, but have tricky questions. To make up for this, she allows for cheat sheets on tests and quizzes. Also, buy the lecture guide! Not only is it helpful, but it comes with an online code for practice lecture questions and exams. If you put in the effort to study, you'll do very well. Probably the best BIO200 prof UB offers!
I absolutely loved this professor. she made such a hard class interesting and clear. she loves what she does and it shows in her lectures. tests and finals can have a cheat sheet. also a note card for lad quizzes. she was one of my favorite professors
Very hard course, but she knows how to get the extensive amount of material across. Requires at least 10 hours a week to go back and reread notes to actually understand the material. Best professor I've had but extremely hard course
Dr. Poulin is very knowledgeable in her field. Lectures cover tons of material. There is a cheat sheet given for exams, but you have to make sure you study your butt off because her test questions are very specific. Lectures are posted online, but it's better to go and review it. Her lecture guide is really useful for exams, forget the textbook.
Very clear and tests seem tough, but are actually very straight to the point. It all comes down to whether or not a person knows the information. It requires a lot of work, approximately 1-2 hr per day, but this was the best class and teacher I have ever had.
Poulin's your best bet. BUY HER LECTURE MANUAL; it's probably the only reason I got an A in the class. She definitely made the class interesting and she's always willing to help a student in need. She talks fast so take advantage of the online lectures. Tests are pretty straightforward and short but if you don't study then you won't get very far.
TAKE HER! She is absolutely passionate about the course. The course is tough and requires many hours of studying but it's doable. She is very helpful and cares a lot about her students. Very very clear and always straight to the point. Don't buy the book and don't leave your cheat sheet for last minute. Buy the Lecture guide and study study study!
If you don't study you will fail. She's a good teacher but gives really hard tests. Only 3 tests, 2 midterms and a final.
Dr. Poulin is easily one of the best professors you will ever get at this school. She is so passionate about what she is teaching, and it shows. It also really helps-- her being so passionate makes the class just a little bit easier. She is also hilarious. The way she teaches makes me WANT to go to class. You will love her, TAKE HER CLASS.
Amazing professor, but her tests are hard. You MUST study to get a good grade and you MUST go to class. Reviewing her lectures, read the sections she tells you to and go to office hours. She is an amazing professor who clearly loves teaching the course.
I love Poulin and was so lucky to get her. As a freshman who hasn't taken Bio since 8th grade she was the BEST! Her lecture guides are super helpful and her online quizzes (not required) are harder than the tests so if you get 80's and above on those then your gonna ace the test. She also puts the lectures online so no need to attend class.
She is a great professor and clearly loves what she is teaching. Her lectures are recorded but you HAVE TO GO TO CLASS if you want to do well. Her in-class review sessions are also very worth it to just go and listen, even if you don't have questions yourself. Her tests are difficult but you have to study for her class every day.
The exams are extremely hard but unless you study everyday for them you won't do great on the exams.
Tests are extremely difficult, so after each lecture you must relisten to the lecture. Fill out lecture guide to the best of your ability and that can be a great studying tool.
Amazing professor! Cheat sheets on her 3 exams and lab final. No textbook, just do the lecture guide. I got a 52 on 1st exam, 61 on 2nd, 78 on final and 90 on lab final. Cutoff for an A is around 86-87. I was in between 80.7 and 83.8, thus the B+. Lab final is Free response and Lecture exams are all MC. If u think u are "failing, think twice! Best
Dr. Poulin is HANDS DOWN the MOST amazing professor I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Her lectures are insanely interesting, and she made me fall in love with biology. Don't let this class fool you, you NEED to put in the effort, but Dr. Poulin is more than happy to help. Her office hours are the greatest, ask question! She loves to answer!
Poulin is very passionate about the course and knows it's a hard class which is why she allows for a cheat sheet. This class is not easy. You have to work super hard if you want the A, so study every day!! Also, attend all her review sessions b/c sometimes she'll drop hints to whats on tests
She is an amazing lecturer you can tell she loves what she is teaching and she makes it fun and interesting. However her tests are insane! Even if you know the material the questions are worded in confusing ways and they are very tricky! Buy her lecture guide and fill it in as you go! She doesn't curve the tests but she does curve your final grade.
Poulin is bomb. Take her for BIO200 it will be the best scheduling choice you will ever make. Lectures are full of material but she is interesting and funny. BUY THE LECTURE GUIDE! Everything is recorded so you don't have to go to class. Tests are hard but you can have a cheat sheet and the lab final is a joke. Don't buy the textbook.
this is a crazy class. You have to work realy realy...... hard. I even listened back to her recorded lecture and wrote down every single word she said. Good luck man. Thank god I passed this course. Don't panic when you see your first few test grades. Keep going. Overall, Thanks Poulin though. She loves what she is doing. She is knowledgeable.
Tough class requires long hours of studying. But theres a curve at the end of the semester. My grade went from a B- to a B+. I worked my butt off to atleast get that grade. This class isnt easy and the labs are terrible if your TA is bad. Be ready for her exams there brutal.
be prepared to fail or come close to failing every test. Her tests are honestly brutal, i studied my butt off and it didnt help me out very much, Im a pretty good student but her tests are very confusing, the wording is what messes everyone up. The only positive is you get a cheat sheet which is the sole reason i was able to pass the course.
This class honestly was one of the hardest classes I've ever took. You need to study everyday because those tests are terribly hard. Dr. Poulin is passionate about the class though and she's willing to help others. I'm just happy I passed this class.
Hardest class i've ever taken in my life. Poulin has no mercy. I studied after lecture everyday and 5 - 10% of what she really covered in lecture was on the tests. The cheat sheet that I spent hours making helped with maybe 1 or 2 questions, she talked way too fast and basically made it impossible to get an A in the class. Worked hard for nothing.
the person before me was way too harsh on dr poulin. she is amazing, one of the best professors at UB. She is so cute and loves what she does, she loves her classes, and that makes it so much easier to sit in lecture . Her tests are NOT hard if you rewatch lectures and make good cheat sheets beforehand. Everything on the tests is covered in lecture
Don't get me wrong, Poulin is a very entertaining and knowledgeable woman but the class was RIDICULOUSLY hard. You can have a cheat sheet but it really doesn't help. The test is worded in a way that is meant to confuse you. The material isn't that hard to grasp, but no matter how hard you study, you'll leave the tests feeling like a failure
Explains very well and her class is fun.
First, third, and lab finals are all easy. 2nd test? Good luck. Cheat sheet for all tests and lab quizzes. All lectures are recorded and there's a notebook to go along with it, so class is completely optional. Strongly recommend going to review sessions before a test though, because the TAs know what will be asked.
Poulin is a very sweet and good professor. The class itself is pretty difficult but if you put work in you will get a good grade. As long as you get an 80 on each test and do well on the labs you should get an A
Jessica created the course and is by far the best professor for BIO200. I had to retake the course because I didn't get a B the first time because my professor sucked. When I retook the course I went from getting a C to an A. Tips: attend lectures, don't rely on cheat sheet or you will barely get by, learn how you study
Love Dr. Poulin. The thing you have to realize is she is *GOOD* at her job. Be prepared to actually learn the ins and outs of each concept. Even though the tests are multiple choice, and you get a cheat sheet, her questions are hard. (But still entirely reasonable-this is rare!) She is possibly one of the most caring and engaged professors I've had
awesome professor, she absolutely loves what she teaches and shows real life pictures that she has taken herself! She does talk extremely fast so get ready to re-watch the lectures to catch the things you missed. My advice is to get the lecture guide and fill it in as your notes, that's what I found the easiest. gives cheat sheets for exams
Horrible, self-obsessed, constantly talks about herself, her kids, the "amazing" stuff she's done. Gives u 50 mins to complete exams of 30 "questions"; each written a paragraph long, misleading (ex. chose the MOST LIKELY, which COULD LEAD TO.. etc.) Learned nothing, honed my memorization technique. Big let down for a pre-med student like myself
TAKE POULIN FOR BIO. She wrote the curriculum for the course. The course is difficult; you have to work for you grade, but if you put in the effort, getting an A is not hard, she has built in safety nets. Buy the lecture guide, no textbook. Go to her office hours before the exam. 2 midterms, 30mcqs, 1 final 50mcqs, & 1 lab final. Records lectures.
She never makes classes boring and she is very passionate in teaching everyone. Even though her test is hard, she allows students to have cheatsheet on the exam.
I left my soul on those 3 exams. I pulled all nighters making study sheets for them and they only helped with a few questions at best. No matter what technique I used in lecture or to study, I still failed the exam. She's a nice teacher and loves what she does, but this course was way too hard for me.
Lectures recorded, but go if you want to do well on exam. Tests are exactly what she says in lecture
Amazing professor, even better person! exams are based on what she says in lecture, lectures are recorded. Textbook not necessary.
Best professor I've had so far at UB. If you pay attention, make your cheat sheet, and study it's an easy A. Some of these comments make it seem like her tests are impossible, but they are honestly super easy. Overall this class was great. Even when the content was dry, Dr. Poulin made it interesting. Highly recommend.
Phenomenal professor, she really cares for her student and gives the best lectures... BUY her lecture guide and everyday after class rewatch her lectures and do the practice problems in the lecture guide. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND STAY FOR THE REVIEW SESSIONS!!!!!! Work your butt off for lab because it's a pretty easy A.
Dr. Poulin is obviously great instructor. If you are a hard-working student who will review after every lecture, you will get a good grade. Honestly, I don't think the concept is hard, but there are many things that you should take notes, memorizing context for the exam. This is why you should not procrastinate any work! Review!
Dr. Poulin is amazing, and is genuinely passionate about what she teaches (a rare commodity in higher education). Her tests are difficult so don't underestimate them, but if you put in the time and ACTUALLY study (not just go to class and put stuff on your cheat sheet) you'll do fine. Would recommend, but just know you're going to have to work.
TAKE HER. she designs the class to let you get a god grade if you put in the work ( she even makes a lecture guide which i would suggest you buy and fill in after lecture). She makes this material interesting and is passionate about it! (plus she puts lectures online) if you email her with questions she responds super fast and loves to help!
One of the best professors at UB. The second exam is the hardest but study and you'll do well! BIO 200 with Dr. Puolin at least is very conceptual so make sure you understand everything! She is super helpful and really sweet :)
She is very passionate and funny. Lectures can involve a ton of information so listen to the information during class and take notes when you re-watch the lecture.
I love Dr. Poulin! Her lectures are amazing and she always keeps them interesting. The tests are a little hard but if you know your stuff you will be good.
she basically read from her notes and the materials are too much you have to study every word she said and attend lectures and take notes or else you gonna fail. labs are easy though and you can easily get high grades on lab. just study everything she said and you gonna be fine. she allows for cheat sheet on test so that helps a little.
Amazing Professor
Don't know how else to describe Poulin other than simply adorable. She's a huge nerd, gives interesting lectures, and has a great lecture guide. Wouldn't recommend skipping lecture, because she does PollQ for credit and a question that are like the ones she gives on the test. Her tests are pretty difficult, but you can take a cheat sheet with you.
shes great. If you're ever having an issue just talk to her and she will do everything she can to help you out
Learned more from her than anyone in all my years at UB. Makes the class very interesting and is prolly one of the top evolutionary professors in the entire country. Class covers a lot of material so it isnt ez. Cheatsheets are allowed for exams but are still quite difficult. Ez labs and attendance questions help with grade though. Highly recommend
She is a lovely lady and knows her stuff, but is not the best at getting it stuck into your head. The lectures are content heavy and are just kind of read off the slides. The class moves at such a fast pace it is easy to fall behind.
Dr Poulin made evolutionary bio a bearable experience for me because that course was a tough one. You need to study like crazy because studying the day before isn't the best idea. Dr Poulin is very caring and has passion for what she teaches. She presents lots of method for you to keep up with the course. TAKE HER!!!
Dr Poulin is such an amazing human being! Very passionate about what she teaches. Go to class and rewatch lectures. She's super helpful in office hours and review sessions. Very caring and just overall great. Love her!! if you put in the work, it'll be totally worth it.
Dr. Poulin is one of my favorite professors. Her lectures are entertaining and very informative. She also works hard to make her self available outside of class. I would %672 take her class again. :)
Great prof. but Bio200 is the hardest course I ever take at UB!
Honestly the best teacher I've ever had!! She was super caring and a great, fun teacher who had a lot to say. She is passionate about what she teaches and its evident in her lectures. Office hours are the best. Go to them!! Yes the class is hard but it's a class that is worth the effort.
i loved dr poulin! shes so nice and truly loves her job. her class is very detailed making the tests hard, but luckily you get to make your own cheat sheet! you definitely have to work hard and just reread the notes and rewatch lectures.
Great class and great professor. Her lectures are really interesting and you can tell she really loves the topic. Her tests aren't hard, but you definitely need to study and pay attention in class to pass them.
Great Professor
Took her during the summer session. 2 exams, the 2nd was cumulative - & 1 final exam. We're allowed 1 sheet of notes which don't really help so you gotta know your stuff. She spends more time talking about herself & kids than the actual material. Wasted $ on text & lecture guide which she doesn't use for the exams.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had. She is fantastic, and really loves what she does. Very caring and wonderful professor. But the course makes you work hard for it. The exams are kinda tough and you really should know the material to pass.
Must pay attention to every word of her lectures, but she seems passionate and knowledgeable about her subject. However, she'll tell you how much money shes saving you, then forces you to buy a lab manual that she wrote herself. $50 a pop, times her hundreds of students. Seems like quite a nice bonus at the expense of her students.
Literally smashed snails to death with rocks in lab. Enough said.
Great professor who really care about her students. Tests are difficult but you get a full sheet of paper cheat sheet to use (but don't rely on it). 10/10 would take another course taught by her.
Honestly, a difficult class but she is an AMAZING lecturer. You have to pay attention because anything she says can be on the exam, GO TO THE REVIEW LECTURES, if you don't you will suffer. Will 100% be taking one of her upper level classes, amazing professor.
The trick is to listen to the lectures and make notes on time. you have to study real hard. There are PollQ questions for attendance. The book is not needed tbh. The lecture guide was helpful for some. I bought it but just for the sake of the online practice questions. You can just share the same account with a friend instead of buying it. easy lab
Dr. Poulin was one of the best professors that I've ever had. She makes lectures interesting and is super passionate about biology. I made sure to go to her office hours every week. Although, the class is pretty difficult. She makes exams pretty hard because you get a cheat sheet. Extremely rewarding though!!
She talked way too fast and was only obsessed with her sons and their group family Halloween costumes. You have to memorize almost everything that goes onto each test. The cheat sheets barely help, I spent 5-6 hours making each one and maybe used it for 2-3 questions on the test. Would not take her
I love Dr. Poulin so much. She is an amazing professor. Her lectures are always interesting. And she gives you every opportunity to succeed in her class. Its challenging, but if you use your resources youll be fine.
Dr. Poulin is by far the best prof I've had at UB. She knows the material EXTREMELY well and it super excited to share her knowledge with students. I bought her lecture guide, made flash cards, and put a lot of time into the cheat sheets she allows for tests, and the class was more than manageable. She's willing to help you succeed no matter what!
Her lectures were insufferable, her voice grating, and her attitude condescending. Genuinely the worst professor I have had in my four years in college. Marking the $30 lecture guide (which she wrote) as "optional" is most likely the reason the average on her exams was around 50%. The class still gives me night terrors. Wish I could give her a 0.
Dr. Poulin is an awesome professor and even more awesome person. Her tests are difficult, you have to really know the material. But she designs the class so that if you do put in the work throughout the semester you'll succeed (lab is half of your grade and it's easy to well in lab). GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!!
She is super passionate. This class was very hard but will be no matter which prof you have. She at least weighs your lab grade equally and allows you cheat sheets on tests and lab quizzes. Get her notes book!! This was the only way that you will be sure you have all the info: huge memorization class, so fit these notes on your cheat sheet.
Dr. Poulin really cares about her job and does her best to give you every resource to do well in the class. I recommend rewatching lectures before tests as she will put very specific questions on the tests. The lab is worth half your grade which is nice. Make sure to go to her review sessions before the test and buy her lecture guide.
If you are taking BIO200, for the love, buy the lecture guide. Use the lecture guide to make the cheat sheets word for word. She talks a bit fast in lecture but if you rewatch the lectures online it makes a lot of sense.
If you take her class you should buy a new lecture guide as it helps with keeping track of notes and provides practice exams. While she does post her lectures and slides online, it is useful to attend lectures as she will announce test materials while muting the mic for lecture videos. Her exams are hard but, she allows a cheat sheet for them.
I had to retake this course so heres what I learned the second time around. Personally I didnt like the lecture guide because it was super easy to miss details. It is not a fill in the blank type of guide, its just a list of vocabulary to know. Print off the slides and take notes on those. She is a great prof and makes class enjoyable too!
Shes a nice person and a good teacher. But she doesnt get the point that not everyone is into all organisms like her. It made the lectures sometimes cringe. That made the exams super hard because she expected everyone to be into biology like. So it was very time consuming to memorize everything she say.
The final is about 36 questions long.1 Q per chapter. meaning you have to know every detail in every chapter to fish out 1 piece of info for 1 question. Writing notes for her lectures can go from 20 to 30 pages. Coming from from someone who has taken Engeering calc 1&2and Chem for engineers series, this is by far the hardest class I have taken.
This class is the worst I've ever taken at UB. The exams count for a lot and her word choice on them makes them far harder than need be. The class has a content overload and requires a ton of straight memorization. Her iclicker are based on correctness, not participation. Straight forward about what you need to know, but the content is too much!
She talks pretty fast but all her lectures are recorded on UBLEARNS to rewatch, which you have to do for most of them. The tests are very difficult, but she allows a single piece of paper as a cheat sheet for every test including the final. She expects you to memorize A LOT of information, but if you study this class isn't terrible.
Great professor overall, but BIO 200 is too much. Make sure you take it during your freshman year with easier classes and it will be doable.
Dr. Poulin is a great professor. BIO200 at UB is a really hard class no matter who you take. Her exams are tough but this class will prepare you for the rest of college. She has a lot of passion for what she teaches and she makes a boring subject (to me) enjoyable to learn. Lab's half your grade and easy but quizzes can be tough at first.
Dr Poulin is great, and this class was great. It is very interesting, and the way she structures it is very easy to follow. Her lectures can get intense, especially diversity, but as long as you follow the lecture guide and make a good cheat sheet, you should be able to succeed in the class. 10/10 would take again
BIO 200 is a difficult class, no matter who your professor is. However, Dr. Poulin was always so accessible and helpful during office hours. She will take the time to make sure you understand the material, no matter how many times she has to reexplain. Every other week there was an in class review session. Test are hard but you get a cheat sheet.
Poulin is amazing! Evo bio is not an easy class to teach or learn, yet she does it in a way that becomes manageable to do so. REWATCH HER LECTURES AND BUY THE LECTURE GUIDE!! It will save you so much time and effort when taking notes/studying. Her office hours are group ones, unless you schedule one w her. She's passionate & you get cheat sheets!
Her powerpoints are useless they contain no notes, you basically listen to her talk and write down everything she says bc she's gonna ask you the tiniest detail. her test qs are not straight forward. you need to know the why and hows. i hater her class.
I loved taking Dr. Poulin's course! You can tell she loves what she does and teaches. Her slides are designed in a way that you have to fill in extra details, but she is a very engaging lecturer. Her exams are super fair. As long as you listen and understand topics covered in class, you're set. If you need BIO electives, take her course!!
A really good professor and cares for her students. She held a lot of helpful reviews and answered our questions. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to this class if you want to get a good grade.
I LOVED her lectures. They are interesting but you have to write down every little detail, because she will test you on it. The format they used for the online exams and lab quizzes during the pandemic was a nightmare though-none of the questions were numbered and you weren't allowed to go back and check which made pacing almost impossible
Dr. Poulin is an amazing professor herself but BIO 200 itself is a rough course. It's crazy that most of the course consists of first semester freshman. This course definitely challenged me, but Dr. Poulin and the lecture and lab TAs were all there to help me get through it. Just mentally prepare yourself if you're going to take this course!
The material in the fist 1/3 and the last 1/3 is not hard at all. But the material in between was the hardest thing to understand. Sooo many things you have to know it's really discouraging. Dr. Poulin is a good prof and she's passionate about the material. But some of the exam questions were unnecessarily confusing for no reason.
Very sweet professor, but she's very fast paced in lectures and goes through a lot of information in a short period of time. Lab quizzes are fairly simple though, and all quizzes and exams are open note.
Dr. Poulin is so sweet, and genuinely cares about her students' success. She's a fantastic professor and, in my opinion, really good at teaching. Her lectures were engaging and interesting. If I could take this class again, I would.
She is my favorite teacher. She is so nice! I love evolution so I'm biased. She is very accessible and just wants us all to do well. You can talk to her outside of class, works for me because I'm obsessed with the topics she teaches lol. Definitely recommend.
Got an A in the class online. Took in person and online Spend good amount of time on each lecture and be on pace with it. Take extremely good notes on EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING. The smallest things are on the exam. In person- memorize the big details and write down the small ones on cheat sheet for exam. Taking in summer is also much easier.
Great professor, and really wants her students to understand what they are learning.
This class was not bad at all if you fill out the lecture guide and study it. It clearly outlines what is important for each chapter. Dr. Poulin is so nice and funny, she made the class really enjoyable!
Dr. Poulin is very enthusiastic with the materials that she teaches. Although I did only take this class for credit, the information she presents is still pretty interesting. Evolution and Ecology is pretty easy, but diversity was pretty hard that you have to memorize many organisms and their family. However, test is open notes and google helps.
Took her summer course and it was VERY difficult, but she is an amazing professor and I really enjoyed the content. It was a lot to keep up on.
THE BEST. fallen in love with bio even more bc of her, she has the most perfect lectures, she always manages to teach everything in 50 min with a story or joke or two. passionate and caring, she listens to the student's feedback and takes everything into consideration. the lecture guide she created is a must, attendance is mandatory, no hmwk, EXAMS
She understands that we have a lot of other things in other classes and is very mindful of it
Lab quizzes every week. She made the book for the lab manual that you have to buy so Im sure she makes a profit. Experiments are pointless and never learned anything. Had to do excel spreadsheets for 3 labs based on hundreds of data. Worst lab ive ever taken in my life. TAs made it enjoyable, but had a presentation for a lab class. Lecture was easy
No matter how anyone looks at it Doctor Poulin was incredibly fair with her grading and had everything outlined in the syllabus. She even offered an extra credit make up exam because she was worried about the students. She deeply cares about her students. She always makes her lectures engaging even if the topics are on the boring side. SHOW UP!!!!!
Quiz every week. Exams are hard. This is the hardest course I have ever taken at UB.
Poulin REALLY cares about students, labs are hard but if you go to reviews and ask questions youll begin to understand. She has fair tests and lab quizzes. Youll need to put in work to pass but once you get it, you get it. She allows 1 page for cheat sheets/index card for lab and all MC for tests. Everything is straightforward and she offers EC.
Professor Poulin is by far the best professor I have. Interesting lectures but theres SO MUCH material - your cheat sheet will be your best friend for your exams. No homework or quizzes, grade is based on participating in class (iclicker) and exam grades (the other half comes from your lab). She is so caring and funny!!
This is an incredibly easy class if you take the time and study the material. The labs are very fun, try to put effort into it and the professors & all the TA's will make sure you succeed. The second unit is the hardest by far. Make use of cheat sheets.
Dr. Poulin is a great and charismatic teacher. She grades on very little tho, So put effort into the lab. I didn't buy the textbook and I was just fine. I bought the lecture manual though, my lab TA did the same. Review her presentations when studying. TAKE GOOD NOTES, YOU'LL NEED THEM FOR UR CHEAT SHEET. overall, she's very approachable and kind.
Dr. Poulin made my toughest class feel like my easiest class. Lectures are super clear and accessible at any time, and are much easier to process with her lecture guide. Labs are fun and easy, TAs want you to succeed, and as long as you take out at least a week or two to study for an exam you should be fine. Overall Dr. Poulin is a great professor.
I love Dr. Poulin, she is my favorite professor at UB she explains the material really well and she also provides a lot of office hours and ta office hours just to make her students to successes.
Dr. Poulin is nice but her lectures are extremely heavy and there is not many opportunities for extra credit. The only forms of grades that go into your overall average is the tests, iclicker, and your lab grade. This class is extremely difficult as well with many topics difficult to conceptualize.
Dr. Poulin is the best lecturer I've ever had. She is really passionate about Biology, and it makes you care about learning evolutionary as well. Beware - the diversity section covers a lot of material, start studying a week before the tests, and the lab quizzes are something that you should spend at least 30 minutes reviewing before.
Listen, this class is not a walk in the park. Freshman need to understand that you are being prepared for rigorous pre-health coursework. That being said, this class is nice once you understand the bigger picture of the concepts she discusses in class. Utilize the Ta's and email her. She's super friendly and loves biology! Its possible to get an A
I can't say enough good things, she is my favorite professor I've had so far and most likely will be my favorite professor forever. She teaches BIO200 right now and she just does everything right, if you follow her suggestions and take this course seriously you can easily get an A, I wouldn't even think about taking this course with anyone else!
Lab Manual w/ Achieve is a must-buy ($145 tho). She gives you opportunities to mock exams, In-person/virtual reviews, practice questions, no hw, extra credit if you attend lectures, the lab and lecture grades are combined, lab quizzes (15 min to take), and cheat sheets for test one full sheet front and back. Overall good at teaching, and cares.
Only bad thing is that there is no homework, so your grade is basically the exams, and in class questions she posts on iClicker. Also you are allowed a whole page for cheat sheet for every exam.
I just finished my BIO 200 final. Let me say that class was not easy, but it teaches you how to condense and stack information mentally AND on one sheet of paper for each exam. Dr. Poulin is also a beautiful human being whose teaching style is impeccable. I thanked her after my final for the pleasure of being her student.
Best Bio 200 professor ever! Her lectures are very clear and straightforward, although sometimes fast paced. The practice exams and lecture questions are an amazing resource to take advantage of when studying for the exams.
This is a difficult class, very dense in material however it is absolutely manageable. Lecture is only graded by two exams, a final and iClicker points (which cap at 52 but it is possible and very easy to earn more than that for e.c.). Exams are very fair and you are allowed an 8.5x11in cheat sheet. Dr. Poulin is a great and very kind professor.
This is a difficult class with very dense material but it is very manageable. Graded only by in-class participation ?s and exams. 8.5x11in cheat sheet allowed for all exams (write literally as much as possible on them and you'll be fine). Offers practice exams and lecture ?s. Dr. Poulin is wonderful and a very understanding prof.
Dr. Poulin is amazing! She will help you succeed if you put in the effort to succeed. Her lectures are by no means easy, but there are so many resources to help you. You'll get a full sheet of paper from front to back to take notes on and use on your exams. She also provides mock exams that include questions similar to those on the test!
One of the best lecturers. She is genuine and passionate, teaches fast but EXTREMELY well. Don't put off studying, grades are mostly iClicker and Exams. Show up, keep good notes (buy the lecture guide), do practice questions, go to TA reviews, and I can't stress this enough: GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! Her class was amazing, I'd highly recommend her.
The materials of this class itself seemed not making any sense, but I loved Dr.Poulin overall as a Professor,as for how engaged she is with her teaching and helping students, even answering question on piazza at midnight ! She's amazing, absolutely recommending her if anyone to take evolution bio/ecology classes with her.
This was one of my first classes I took freshman year, coming into UB, at it overall helped me adjust to college level lectures. You have to be there in class, ready to take notes, and spend time out of class going and reviewing, rewriting, and studying material. There's great TA's and PAL sessions, use them, overall great teacher, very caring!
The class is incredibly difficult, so be ready to put in the work, but Dr. Poulin clearly cares so much and wants everyone to succeed and had I used some of the many resources that were provided I'm sure I would have done a lot better and the class would have been a breeze.
you can get a 75 on all three tests and still pull through with an A, as long as you go to class and do iclicker which turn into extra credit, and just do well in labs. go to her office hours she literally will answer anything and is so fun to just hang out with. she is super enthusiastic about evolution and it shows.
Dr Poulin was the best professor amongst the others for evolutionary bio. I would not take the class again simply because I do not like evolution but she is a really good professor. She lets you use cheat sheets and there's extra credit. Also use the TA, SI Pals session and pay attention in lab!
Dr. Poulin knows a ton about what she is talking about, and she is a great teacher, but the class was extremely difficult. The only things that were graded was tests, iclicker, and lab. There was no extra credit, or homework to help boost your grade (which other teachers provide). Lab is also extremely hard, and you need to study for it a bit.
Dr. Poulin's honors research class is a must-take for anyone interested in research. Dr. Poulin is passionate about improving student outlook for career opportunities. She did an amazing job teaching how to read, analyze and present a piece of primary biology research. She also had amazing speakers from different areas of the field of biology.
Dr. Poulin definitely cares about students, but the lab portion of this course was awful. The TA was downright rude and graded the oral presentations harshly. The course is difficult and a lot of content, but I'd probably take it again with Poulin and hopefully a different lab TA.
One of my favorite Professor at UB! She cares about her student! Fun class. Make sure you do iClicker , you can get extra credits. And do all practice questions on Achieve!
Most amazing professor I have ever had. I had her for Bio200 as well. She is so caring and actually treats her students as people. She is extremely understanding and is always willing to listen to you, and cares about your success. I couldn't say a bad thing about her.
Super awesome! Go to her office hours, get the lecture guide, and honestly, just communicate whenever you're having trouble. She's extremely supportive. She'll definitely challenge you but it's reasonable expectations.
Awesome class and professor. Go to office hours even if you don't have questions, and if you do, she takes the time to make sure you fully understand. Review lectures after class (invest in the lecture guide) and also take the practice Achieve questions. The amount of content seems intimidating, but if you put in the time and work, you'll do well.
Dr. P makes it very easy to learn this tough material. Lots of memorization, but her office hours and TA office hours helped me bring my grade up from a C- to a B+ throughout the semester. GO TO OFFICE HOURS
Dr. Poulin is very passionate about what she teaches, and her lectures are interesting to listen too. Labs for this class was entertaining, it is a lot of working with groups. Lab and lecture are both worth 50% of your grade, as long as you keep up with labs, study for tests, go to class, and answer iclicker questions correctly, you should be fine.
Amazing teacher, very passionate and great "story-like" lectures. With good preparation, you can get an A
Whatever disruptions in class, she jumps back to lecture and students continue to love learning from her. Participation and attendance is through iClicker and she makes manageable questions and allows us to discuss on answers. She also sends email notifications to update students on happenings or tech issues right away.
Great Professor, highly recommended. She's very clear in how you can earn points and what is and what is not allowed. I rarely get bored during her lectures, always telling us a random fun fact or a picture of a plant that she's obsessed in. If you pay attention, you'll ace it.
The professor purposefully makes the questions hard and tricks you with multiple semi-correct answers. The exams are frustrating as the practice questions do not match exam questions. The professor also explains the material differently each time making it more confusing to follow along. She is the lesser of the two evils.
Dr. Poulin is an amazing professor! The lab work was difficult because a lot of the time it would be on a different topic from the lectures or some labs were just completely pointless. The lab exams are more difficult than the lecture exams. The lecture guidebook is a must for this course it's much more helpful than the textbook.
Best professor I've ever had. If every professor were like her, college would be so much nicer.
Dr. Poulin was such a great professor! She was willing to help every student and answer any of the questions they had. The iClicker's are graded; however, once they cap at 100% the rest are extra, so be sure to get them right. All it takes to do well in this course is to take the time and really understand the material. Overall, really good course!
lectures are interesting and engaging. nice professor, take her if you can!
Amazing prof and even more amazing person! It's hard to keep short, but she's PHENOMENAL and I couldn't recommend her more! It's definitely not an easy class but she keeps it super interesting; she's easy to talk to and ask questions and responds to emails quick. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! Hang out and do the Achieve practice there, IT'S WORTH IT!!!!!
Jessica Poulin fails to balance what you memorize with: (1) what you apply it to and (2) what you synthesize with it. This lead them to cram BIO 200 (laps w/ BIO 201) and fail to assess you with something that ask you to demonstrate your competence and push you understand it. They did start to experiment this semester (Aut 2024) and it may change.
Dr. Poulin kills the lectures, she's very passionate and knows how to draw you in and make you care as much as she does, Little to no out of class assignments, but this does mean that your grade is almost solely based on participation questions and the exams. Optional textbook readings, recommended but not essential.
dr. poulin was an amazing professor and her lectures were packed with info but also fun! the best way to excel in this class is to use the lecture guide, go to office hours, and take the practice exams. the few bad ratings are from those that don't know how to study. the TA's were also the best! the reference sheet during exams definitely helps
The class is difficult if you do not have any prior knowledge. Dr. Poulin teaches really well, and theres a lot of extra credit. Your lab grades help you to boost your average as well. If you put in the work, you will do well in this class. Just don't take this class if you don't have to.
All lectures are recorded. There's a textbook but you don't need to read it to pass; only the things covered in lecture will be tested on. No homework. Just 2 midterms, a final, and lab grades, but there are optional practice questions for studying. Overall an entertaining and engaging lecturer. I heard she's amazing and nice in office hours too.
She is the absolute best proffesor of all time.
She's a good teacher who teaches her lectures well. Despite the exams being oddly difficult, she makes it very easy to get the resources to do well in her class. She is also very accessible. Make sure to study very well for exams though, as they make up a large chunk of your grade.
She's a good professor so far I'm taking summer classes but her TAs are absolutely horrible they don't reply and never willing to help they have an attitude labs are so bad it's ridiculous
Worst professor ever she can't teach at all
she is great but her teaching isnt for everyone.esp if you are some1 who hates tests. No homework, just iClicker, Exams, and lab, and theres 3 exams. but she tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exams.and exactly what you need to know from each lecture its an amazing system i wish more professors had. youre also allowed 1 cheat sheet, both sides.
Amazing teacher, the absolute goat
She's a great professor because she obviously knows what she's talking about. The exams themselves aren't too bad as long as you come prepared. She also likes to throw in some stuff about her personal life mid lecture, which I quite enjoy because it kinda gives my brain a break. My only issue is that she DOES go pretty fast during lectures.
Dr. Poulin is obviously very passionate about the content she teaches. She explains things very well (she wrote the course so she knows what she's talking about) and always gives tips on how to succeed in this course. Very friendly at office hours. Lecture grade is basically only exams and iClicker, but final grade is combined with lab to help out.
be prepared to not have a life. in order to do well in this class you need to study probably every hour of the day. lab is great tho!
Although Prof Poulin is very passionate abt course, there needs to be some changes. Grade's based off very little that carry tons of credit. If you do poor on single thing, expect it to heavily affect grade. Course material is interesting but taught extremely fast. Tests can be possibly difficult if you don't put the entire lecture on cheat sheet.
She is genuinely so passionate about what she does and you can see she wants everyone to succeed. She posts all of her lectures after class, has so many resources to help everyone, and has a great team of TAs that work so hard. If you fail this class, it truly is your own fault.
She is very passionate and loves what she is teaching. It is a hard class, but if you put in the work, you will do fine. You get a cheat sheet for exams (USE IT). The labs are nice, too. The whole class is 50% lecture/class and 50% lab, so if you do well in lab and do okay in lecture, then you'll be fine.
She is a very approachable teacher and her office hours are very enjoyable. All of her TA's care and are willing to help all they ask is you to do the reviews. Definitely a tougher course but if you study and do the extras an A is very achievable. I would recommend her and this course.
Dr. Poulin is an AMAZING professor, who is extremely passionate about both teaching and biology. She is very accessible in office hours and through email and genuinely wants you to succeed. The tests are very straightforward and she provides lots of resources so it is on you to put in the work and do well. This class is graded 50/50 lecture and lab
