Nice professor! Exams are quite easy and lectures very straightforward. Highly recommended. You can also drop the lowest score of exams.
She is a great professor! Lectures are helpful and exams are fair. The practice exam is very similar to the real exam. HWs and discussion sections helped preparing the exams well.
fair exams and you can prepare well with homework and practice exam. There are more HWs compared to other classes, but it is good prep for the exams.
Since the subject itself is difficult, you need to put much efforts. Although the quarter is not ended yet, professor is very nice so far. I like her lecture style, but it seems like too much assignments. But it has been helping me preparing for exams.
I like her lecture because she explains concepts clearly. Workload seems like a lot but the good thing is that all the assignments are very helpful to prepare for the exams. Drop the lowest score of exams!
She is a great professor that really tries to accommodate her students and make the class relatively easy but definitely not a free A.
Ridiculous structure, unorganized, lazy. The only way to really pass is to hope that you navigate your hw right. Lecture slides are primarily pictures and her handwriting is barely legible. NOT accommodating. There is no clear cut resource to use to learn the material, only vague links that you figure out how to research yourself.
One of my favorite professors I've had so far at UCSD. Even though I had to take it virtually, she made the class really engaging without it being too much work or overwhelming.
There is a lot of work for this class, and it does not matter how hard you work still it will be not enough to get a high grade on her exams. She tries to trick you by any means possible to ruin your grade. Just try to avoid this Professor.
Do not take this class if you are planning on taking any other classes with work, she will dominate your time with 4 quizzes and 2 problem set submissions a week. Then she has two cumulative midterms and a final. Her lectures are disorganized, lazy, and will not prepare you for the test material. Make sure you read the assigned readings. BAD PROF!!
She's very unwilling to compromise. Throws on multiple problem sets, quizzes, and readings every week even during midterm weeks. Her lecture's are very unclear and I learned only from my TA. She spends a lot of time talking about irrelevant things and glosses over the important topics. Says "i don't know" a lot in lecture. Would never recommend
This class was supposed to be the easiest upper division class, but Dr Rusert teaching the class was a complete fiasco. If you are going to take any upper division class with this class, then I would never recommend taking her, because the only thing she does is to focus on her class, and only on her class. Never take with her to save your GPA!
While I appreciate Dr. Rusert's intention to have us learn the material over simply memorizing it, the execution is just not it. There is way too many things due each week and her absolute focus on experiments makes me think I'm in a lab class. It's extremely difficult to apply concepts to experiments when the concepts aren't well explained. :(
Shes very nice & want her students to succeed, but she gives LOTS of work. 4 quizzes a week w/problem set. No xtra credit. No answer keys to hw/midterms. Her lectures are very dense but doesnt prepare us for exams. We cant study off of the work that we did because we dont know if its right/wrong since theres no answer key!
We can tell that Dr. Rusert has good intentions, but this class is unnecessarily busy, chaotic, and lacks the necessary resources students need in order to succeed. You will never know what mistakes you made in the class because there are no answer keys. So many assignments, so many quizzes, unclear tests, and nothing to show for it. Don't Take.
Avoid Dr. Rusert at all costs if you don't want to ruin your GPA. Her teaching style is awful. The topics covered in her lectures have nothing to do with what you see on the test. If you wanna get a good grade on her test the best way to do so is to get a Ph.D. then come take Dr. Rusert Tests. No curve, no extra credit, no excuses. RUN.
The amount of work this class has is unbelievable. This is the only upper division course Ive taken that has required me to have this much work and Ive taken upper div labs here. This is ridiculous. Its an easy A but it doesnt require all this extra other stuff! If you have other commitments such as your life and other classes, skip her.
She's completely insensitive to people affected by COVID and went on a rant about how people should get over it. Her tests are mis-worded, and questions do not represent material presented. One has to read copious amount of text to even understand her lectures. There are 4 quizzes a week and a lot of homework. If you are taking other classes beware
Insensitive. Inconsiderate. Lacks the proper knowledge to be a professor at UCSD - says things like she forgot or shes lost during lecture. Doesnt realize students failure is a reflection of her teaching skills. Avoid this professor at all costs - heavy and useless workload. You wont learn much from it all.
Between the horrible teaching, astounding workload, unclear tests, excruciatingly long assignments that have no answer key, and unclear expectations of student- this class is an absolute disaster. Take anything else. She does not realize the class' failure is a reflection of her own failure as a teacher. Midterm averages in the 60%'s. No curve.
Not sure how people are saying she is not accommodating. She drops 2 quizzes, 2 homework, and 1 test and when I have emailed her with issues, she has been so sweet and understanding. In my opinion, her exams reflect the material as long as you put in effort. I honestly thought she was amazing for BICD100, and I have no complaints.
I like the content of this class but the professor is absolutely horrible at teaching. One time she spent five minutes in lecture in silence unsure of what the experiment on the slide meant asking students to give her some time to think about it. Students had to suggest to her what they thought the experiment meant before she vaguely remembered the
Dr Rusert is nice and her personality is perfect, but she is not the right teacher for this class. Her teaching style is so vague and sometimes the questions are so hard she questions herself for some minutes. Her lecture slides are just pictures without explanations and she does not give you resources to read from. Great person, but bad Professor.
Absolutely garbage. Her tests are not reflective of the material and her teaching is off the charts vague. Do you want to learn? Do you want to succeed? If so then this prof is not the one for you. The averages for the test were low and only people that knew the material beforehand did well. She asks for feedback and then blames you for not trying.
She is literally Ezzatti 2.0: Not helpful at all, too much work (4 quizzes, 1 discussion, 2 homeworks due every single week. The homework is not like the quizzes, and the quizzes are not like the tests. There are some good reviews, only for BICD100; she claims that bc she's teaching 2 courses she wants us to be understanding of hersoBICD110suffers.
Save yourself and do not ever take the course with Rusert. She makes the enjoyable subject something so complex, even if you study, the tests have nothing to do with the course material that is being taught. She likes to go off-topic and daydream when students ask questions. If you wanna get into Med-school don't take her.
This class was completely chaotic and way more difficult than it needed to be. She's a nice person, but she totally lacked any kind of expertise on the subject, and her lectures were hard to watch because she rarely seemed to know what was going on. There is also a huge workload, with none of it actually preparing or helping with exams.
Sweet lady, HORRIBLE TEACHER. Assigns too much work yet exam questions are still somehow novel and are not reflective of material practiced on problem sets or quizzes and are often concepts glossed over in class. Horrible at explaining things but expects too much of students. Thinks hers is the only class we take. Doesn't care if you fail. AVOID!!
Extremely heavy workload. No answer keys given for homework. Unorganized and unprepared lecture. Lecture and homework won't help with preparing for the exam, but no practice exams were given. Mostly relied on self-study and discussion sections. The TAs did a better job in teaching than the professor. RUN
Her lecture style really promotes critical thinking about the material and exposes you to the information such that you do not have to go back and learn the material on your own. I really enjoyed the polls and questions she posed to the class. Her practice exams and homework are a lot but they reflect the course material and are similar to exams.
I like Dr. Rusert. Yes, her class is hard, but it's doable if you put in the work. At first, she came off cold but as the quarter went on, she became really accommodating. There's weekly quizzes and hw. The hw is hard, but similar to her exams. The quizzes are curved so 80100. It's my own fault I'm not doing better; she provides good resources.
I do not recommend this class at all, especially if you're taking more STEM classes on top of it. Tests are worded very weirdly and are hard. Tests are not reflective of what she teaches. Too much homework with no answers provided. Lectures are not organized well, half the time she's confused about the questions students ask. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
She said we should never email her. She has 4 quizzes, hard as hell, and one problem set (which doesn't represent tests at all), each week. Her exam wordings are super vague, need to write essays on short responses to get full credit. Watching lecture is a waste of time, reading the textbook is more helpful if you want to do well.
3-4 quizzes + 2 homework assignments per week, along with 2 midterms and the final. She's never clear about what she wants us to learn. Her lectures consist of confusing explanations followed by "well you can read about it in the book". She also makes it very clear never to contact her for anything. Good luck.
Rusert is extremely accommodating for her students; that being said, you cannot expect to get an A in the course without effort. If you work hard in this class, pay attention during lectures, do the homework and practice tests, you will do exponentially better on her exams bc they are so similar. Although the class isn't curved, she gave some ec.
Best class I've ever taken. Interesting content, gracious drop policy, open-note tests/quizzes. If you take clear notes on her example problems and lectures and do her assignments carefully then that will be all the studying you need for tests. 2 quizzes per week with around 5q each (1 quiz gives 2 attempts) and 1 hw per wk graded on effort.
Amazing Professor. Provided a lot of leniency in her course, and homework preps you very well for exams. First exam is tough, but the afterwards you're able to gauge the format and do well the next. We got approximately 2.38% extra credit at the end of the quarter and lowest test score is dropped. Made class engaging and genetics very enjoyable.
Unclear tests, homework and unreasonable amount of course load. Literally will subtract points for regrade requests rather than give points back so it is sometimes not even worth it to risk a lower grade by submitting a regrade request. Tells students it is ok to fail her class rather than focusing on improving her own terribly unorganized teaching
Lectures messy. 2-3 quizzes + heavy problem set/wk. Those problem sets are hard but points for effort. She expected you google everything. Test are not relevant to the problem sets and what she teaches. Highly not recommended!!!!!
Although the lectures were good and the tests were fair, I felt like the workload was unreasonable. There were so many little assignments and she should cut those down in half. The learning objectives were really helpful so definitely study those if you take this class. Also, some of these reviews are sus so her RMP score is slightly inflated.
Rusert basically took a bunch of slides and assignments from other professors and expects us to do them. When she's lecturing, she's clearly reading off of the slides (slowly because it's likely her first time reading them too) and sometimes she confuses herself when she speaks. She says "I don't know" a lot and overall just assigns so much work
There was a lot of hw, but I think it helped me learn long term. As for the exams, they were basically similar to the hw & practice exams. You have to get used to this teaching style, but it is beneficial. She offered ec for each practice exam and at the end as well. First exam I got an 85% but I was able to drop it and get an A+ in the class.
Rusert is an incredibly kind and easy-going professor! She was very patient and understanding of students enduring online classes during the pandemic. Lowest exam, lowest homework, lowest quizzes, dropped from the grade book. Yes, the class is a lot of work, but the work she assigns is a reflection of the types of questions she uses for her exams.
her tests do not reflect the content she teaches in her lectures
the lectures suck, the tests are really bad since they don't cover what we are taught, and the way they're graded is harsh. she does too much and the material is not being taught properly. would not recommend. 0/10
If you want an A, YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE LECTURES. Her test questions are very specific and often come from the questions she posts throughout the lecture. The only reason people on here are upset is because they didn't take thorough notes. She's a decent lecturer, nothing amazing but the tests aren't hard. I barely passed AP BIO btw
I thought she was O.K. But as the quarter went on it was more than evident that she has a horrible criteria for exams that ask for details that are either barely from the content she teaches or you almost need to assume to get the question right. Shes expresses care but evidently not for your grades as she'll dismiss it to a "do better next time".
Her lectures are not illustrative of her tests. She bases her tests heavily on case studies rather than the material of the course itself. Her lectures are very broad, whereas her tests are very specific. She is very wishy washy on her grading and her grading rubric is very unclear.
Her lectures are very broad. She only really covers the basic details and then provides case studies that take up most of the time. Often introduces concepts but doesn't explain in depth and can often be confusing. Grading criteria on exams makes it hard to know how to receive full points; often results in brain dumping of material.
VERY harsh grader! The tests are super dependent on the specific details in lectures and the grade breakdown is awful. Grading is very harsh and doesn't specify what you need to get a good grade. She claims to care about students and their performance but we had 70% test averages with no curve. Take any other teacher if you have the chance.
The exams are very specific although lectures are broad. Assignments are also long and grading is very specific
I took this class for a major requirement but I did enjoy learning the content. A lot of the material I had already learned in AP Bio, but the exams were hard because you had to really understand the content inside and out to be able to apply your knowledge. I ended up with a B+ but if I had one more point it wouldve been an A- which is sad.
Dr. Rusert provides lots of resources to ensure success. While exams are tough, she provides relevant study guides and example questions. Lots of participation points are provided through lecture quizzes, which really help to boost your grade even if you do poorly on the exams. A fair professor.
She is sometimes confused by herself and does know what she is sometimes talking about. This class is so confusing if u take the class with her. DO NOT TAKE WITH HER.
Her tests are set up as if she is trying to trick you. The questions are very unclear. The lecture covers topics in a broad manner but test and homework questions are super specific and combine topics that she never explained how to do. She is very standoffish and wont work with you, she is one of those professors that will just say you are wrong.
I got an A in the class but I hated my life during this quarter. She is very unclear on her test questions and she gives out reading guides that make you read random paragraphs from random websites (it doesnt help at all in my opinion). Also she updated her class so your grade is based off of 2 midterms and a final essentially, not weekly quizzes.
Don't take this class with her. Test questions do not reflect the difficulty of the homework or other materials in the class. Minor mistakes on exams are very costly to your grade and they make up a lot of your total grade. The reading reflections are useless and won't help you do any better. Very hard to do well in her class and she doesn't curve.
She's a no BS professor. She doesn't give much accommodation (except OSD). But she knows what she's talking about and explains it well during class. Her tests are pretty easy but there's super specific grading criteria that may knock you down a letter grade or two....
Dr. Rusert lectures BICD 100 really well. I do skim through assigned readings but I feel like if you pay enough attention to her lectures that would be enough. Her lectures covers everything you need to know for the exams. In addition, sometimes her discussion sections worksheet and practice exam have very very similar questions as real exams.
Honestly I don't get why her ratings are not high. If you put in the work it is very accessible to get an A. Just do all the practice exams and homework seriously, they are so reflective of the real exam. Also she podcasts all lectures. She also offers multiple extra credits opportunities.
Dr. Rusert is under rated for BICD100. Lectures are great, contains everything showing up on exams, and she podcasts. Reading reflections and HW are based on completion, so free points. Practice exams are similar to real exams. Contents are actually interesting and applied to real world. For this quarter she curves and gives extra credits.
Her recent policy is quite generous. Reading reflections and hw are based on completion, and she drops one lowest of each. Midterm 1, 2 and final can either worth 22%, 22%, 26%, or the higher midterm worth 34% and the final worth 36%, screwing up one midterm doesn't hurt at all. Just listen to lectures would be enough no need to read textbook.
She is rude when students ask questions and also hard to get a good grade.
I absolutely hated the professor. I had to self study since she was really unhelpful. The TAs are really helpful but the professor is very uptight and her tests are worded very strangely. She also closes the regrades too quickly (2 days).
The amount of random assignments for this class is too much. Random reading reflections and homework and mandatory surveys and worksheets. If you make an error on a test it could knock you down by a lot. Don't recommend.
Acts like she cares about learning but her tests and homework are very specific that she may not even have mentioned in lecture. Her lectures are good and engaging but her tests don't reflect.
Dr. Rusert is an amazing professor. Exams are extremely reflective of course material and practice questions. There are lots of very easy assignments to help boost your grade. As long as you complete the work, you're pretty much guaranteed to pass. Dr. Rusert was always quick to respond to emails and showed genuine compassion and care.
The professor is terrible at responding and showing compassion. I emailed her once and she just responded with "No. Sent from my iphone." She is also really unhelpful and I had to self study a lot.
Bruh sis is everywhere in her lectures like its so hard to grasp concepts when she keeps bringing up extra information/scenarios while explaining whats going on. its literally the most confusing class Ive ever taken. She said at the beginning that the class wont focus on learning the exceptions but every other slide is a what-if scenario.
The professor sends too many announcements and has too many random assignments. Her learning objectives are the most useless thing. I had to really self study.
I really liked her lectures and thought I had a good handle on the subject when I was studying for the tests. Her clicker questions are very broad and there were sometimes multiple answers to them so although I felt that I learned a lot, nothing was really done to prepare me for the tests. The reading reflections and discussions also did not help.
The reading reflections and learning objectives don't help at all really. She barely curves and is uptight about everything. Her lectures are alright but lowkey feels like she just adds things to take up time.
I've never written a rate my professor review before but after seeing all the low ratings for her, I knew I had to. She definitely does give a lot of homework that can seem irrelevant at some point, but mostly all of them really add to your understanding of the content. Her lectures are incredibly thorough and she uses a lot of examples that help.
This class is not an easy A but I do think that I retained a lot of information by taking it. Her test questions might be very specific to a certain topics that weren't heavily covered in lecture but overall, if you study hard you should be fine.
She doesn't deserve the bad reviews. Went to her OH she is super nice and answer every question throughly. She also stay after class a while to answer questions. She allowed ppl this quarter to take a final at a different class time. She is very nice it's just ur questions need to make sense and ur request need to be reasonable.
This class is structured very well and the lectures are all helpful/interesting material. She explains things in depth and at a pace any student can understand. Although her exams are difficult they are verrrry well reflected by the homework/discussion sections and a decent grade can be achieved if you understand the material from lectures.
Professor Rusert is an intelligent woman but cant properly deliver information in her lectures. Her lectures ARE NOT simple and there arent enough resources to study with. I had to learn by myself. She is a tough grader. Her exams might reflect the HW but they are difficult. Be ready to study 20+ a week for her class.
Dr. Rusert is clearly knowledgeable but this class was a major struggle. If you prefer clear-cut hard science classes, get ready to study & to feel like you're having a hard time. Exams are tough and grading is specific but extra credit is offered. Go to office hours & lectures or you won't pass
Professor Rusert has a very good understanding of her material and her tests are very reflective of her assignments and lectures, but they are fairly difficult without hours of studying. However, her course also covers much more material than this course taught by other professors so only take her if you are truly interested in the course.
I don't think Professor Rusert deserves all of the bad reviews she has on here. Yes, the class is definitely difficult and requires a lot of study time, but the exams are representative of the lecture material and she provides more than enough resources to get help outside of class. This class is by no means an easy A, but she is a good professor.
During the first few weeks of Fall quarter, I was really struggling with this class. However, Dr. Rusert responded positively to class feedback and the class average increased! Pros: Lectures are v interesting and she knows how to keep the class engaged. Receptive to feedback. Cons: The homework she assigns is /extremely/ difficult.
Professor Rusert is one of the worst professor I've ever met in college. She engages with lecture audiences, but does not comprehend lecture material. She pulls up this learning objectives every class, but they are absolutely useless. Exam directions are very vague and everything is based on case studies--completely endless and disappointing. Ugh.
Worst experience at UCSD so far. I studied HOURS upon hours & did all E.C. and assignments and discussions. Exams are difficult, hard to decipher, mostly case studies & hardly based on lectures. Lecture slides are almost useless tools for studying. Smart, but does not know how to teach. Thought for sure I was going to fail despite all my efforts.
Her lectures are very dense but understandable, learning objectives aren't representative of the exams, but homework and discussions are. Homework is long, but you can complete up to 80% of some assignments which is a plus. I understand where the neg comments come from, but she is very receptive to feedback and supportive.
I actually like this professor. The homework and reading reflection is long, but it's effort based so it's not so stressful. Her exam is somewhat similar to her homework questions and practice exams. But You need to explain everything to the most detail in order to get full points.
Dr. Rusert does not deserve the hate she gets here. Her teaching style takes a little bit of effort to get into, but genetics in general is by no means easy. Her tests are mostly based on application of the material, but they are open note and after a while it became kind of fun to do her case studies. She does assign lots of work.
I'm not sure why Prof Rusert has so many bad reviews on here. She really is a good professor- she cares a lot about her students, her exams are easy without much studying, and the hws are tricky but help you learn and are only graded on completion. She does tend to over-complicate simple concepts, so just ask your IA to clarify if you're confused.
Lectures are digestible and homework/discussion really help in understanding the concepts. The tests are not hard if you complete all of the other work in the class since the material is encoded through the process.
She's good at explaining the lecture contents. She gave reading reflections before each week, but they were graded based on effort and were really helpful for you to better understand the contents of next week. She's also accessible outside of classroom and pretty flexible about problems you encounter during exams. Great professor!
I thought Professor Rusert was really good! Her lectures are really clear, she's really kind and available as well as the TA's. However, you must attend your own discussion.
Her lectures were very clear, and somewhat enjoyable. During lecture she does test questions that I found very helpful. However, exams have super specific rubrics that make it hard to get all the points. Homework is graded on correctness, and ALSO has a specific rubric. I went to office hours for homework help, but never did well on the homework.
Dr Rusert really cares about the students and wants you to understand the material in-depth. Her exams can throw you off the edge with the wording of the questions. She wants to kinda trick you (she says it's to test your concept skills not memorization). If you don't miss lab and follow class activity, you'll be fine. IAs are very knowledgeable
Professor Rusert is a very caring professor. She gives 2 midterms and a final but you can drop one midterm if you choose. The midterms are hard and mostly all frq where saying something incorrect gets you marked down. The class moves fast but she allows a lot of time for questions. Overall I liked her even though my grade wasn't as high as I liked.
idk why she made the class online. its not fair. she's seriously a joke
Dr. Rusert is my favorite professor at UCSD. I had her for BILD 1 and BICD 100, and in both courses she was fantastic about making the material accessible for all students. Would genuinely recommend her to anyone passionate about biology who really wants to learn and engage with the material. Exams test your understanding rather than memorization.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures are horrible and the slides are useless. She gave a lot of attitude when students would ask questions to relevant course materials. Her exams are very difficult and vague. Homework is useless too and it's hard to study for exams with given materials and resources. Passive aggressive.
Lots of busy work, but it builds a nice grade pad cause its all completion. I think if you enjoy the material like I did, this class is not tough, but if you don't like it, it can be painful. Prepare to put in a good bit of work for a grade, especially cause the test answers require you to say specific things. Lectures can be pretty boring too.
I don't know why she gets such a bad overal rate here. TBH, she is good, maybe not outstanding, but at least reach the average. She is really patient and willing to answer lots of questions during the lectures. Midterms and finals are not hard, just like the template of practice exams. icliker questions are for attendence, not for extra credit.
She was one of the best professors I have taken, she really cares about your knowledge and wants you to understand. The class itself was difficult for me, but she made it a lot better. The lectures were extremely helpful and she answered every question I had. There was one report at the end, but is not worth the entire grade.
she doesn't care about her students and would often times ignore emails. this class is difficult and she made it extra difficult by making nonsense lectures with a bunch of info that you don't use. the layout was confusing and lots of things thrown at you and I had to open like 10 tabs each lab section to keep up with her. very messy. avoid her.
The professor made this class so complicated, recording hours on hours of lectures that did not help you in the exams. Her final exam was awful! giving multiple choices with instructions to choose all possible answers. The grading was terrible. I spend at least 15 hours outside this class on the material and attend office hours. Will not recommend
very frustrating to communicate with
Professor Rusert was the most caring thorough professor I've ever had! Although she does iClicker for every lecture, if you do good in other parts of the class then they won't matter much. There are many extra credit options that are easy to do. She taught how to answer FRQ in a concise manner, which is helpful in every aspect of life.
On the surface, she acts as though she cares a lot about your mental health and she wants you to succeed. However, when you interact with her, she isnt empathetic or even reasonable. I received aggressive emails and rude and not helpful responses after class. A lot of homework and tests are set up very confusing and it is very hard to succeed .
I think Russert is okay. I never interacted with the professor; I just went to lectures and did all the work and stuff. Russert is okay lecturing, homework is graded on completion, has extra credit, a drop-one midterm, and a front-back cheat sheet for exams. On test you have to be crazy specific though with free response. Doable, could be worse.
She's an expert in genetics, and I liked her lectures. Assignments were reasonable. Study guides helped before tests a lot, but be very specific with the FRQ. You will lose points for not being specific. I thought the class was fun, and she was accessible through OH and Piazza. Offers extra credit and cheat sheet on exams too.
Iclicker attendance points, discussions mandatory, but super knowledgeable and intresting lectures. Not a class you can cheat through, the exams are hard but if you try you will learn a lot and the teaching team is wonderful.
When it comes to grading for hw it is based off of your effort and completion. Read questions on exams very carefully and when it comes to frq do not beat around the bush and be clear and concise with your answer. DO NOT BE OVERLY HYPOTHETICAL. You will learn a lot and I found the material to be engaging and challenging. Cheat sheet on exams is OK!
She's not a bad professor just a bad lecturer. Her exams aren't that difficult if you put in decent effort and it is very possible to get an A. The only bad thing about her is that her lectures don't have any rhyme or reason and are honestly a waste of time. You have to be willingly to put the work in outside of class. But she isn't that bad.
The lectures were interesting just super frustrating when she would complicate very easy topics because students would ask her confusing questions. Just study hard for the midterms and do her practice midterms and make sure to answer the written questions in bullet points for the final it's a lot of multiple choice very different from the midterms
Is very harsh and can come across rude/mean. Answers questions without judgement. Very strict about grades. Gives some extra credit and normalizes tests, but if people do well then there's no curve. Good teacher and explains things pretty well. Lectures are iclicker participation, gives a couple absences free. Cheat sheet for each test.
Professor Rusert's class has a heavy workload, but her engaging lectures and helpful resources like unstuckstudy make it manageable. Attending class and utilizing the free materials is key to doing well.
If you don't know or remember anything from past biology classes and think “I could study on the way” DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Her wording is terrible on tests. If you have prior bio knownlegde take it, but good knowledge on concepts. I walk by the class everyday and thank God I don't need to go to genetics. She made the class harder than it needed
i heard many mixed reviews about her but honestly after taking her class i am so grateful i did. she was very understanding of everyone's backgrounds and very passionate. in class her clicker questions are good for review. the work in this class wasn't too bad and the practice tests, discussion, and hwk helped me prepare for the exams a lot
Besides the professor having a somewhat stuck up aura the lectures were ok. She goes fast and expects you to pick up the material just as fast. The exams aren't that bad if you use the homework, practice exams, and discussion sections to your advantage.
I loved this lab and it's really not as bad as ppl make it seem. So long as you understand what you're doing in lab and keep up with the lectures then you'll be fine. It would also be very helpful if you understood how to do dilutions. Overall, prof Rusert is a good lecturer and it rlly wasn't that hard to understand what info we needed to pass...
This class is a wreck. Its very unorganized which makes it incredibly stressful. Please take another lab if you can. This class is 1 lab&report a week (only 48hrs to complete&quiz). At the end of the quarter you have to put all 10 labs(like 70+ pages)into one report. Its just very confusing&the tests are extremely difficult bc she is a harsh grader.
This class isn't difficult in terms of content, but Dr. Rusert makes it much more stressful. Each week, there's one report due within 48 hours, along with a quiz. The tests are difficult because the instructor grades very harshly. For attendance, missing more than one iClicker questions means you won't get the attendance point.
I believe this class is not difficult compared to previous lower and upper divison lab classes. Dr. Rusert makes this class more difficult than it should be. I believe Professor Meaders is more suited for teaching this class. Dr.Rusert believes students have prior knowledge to upper division biology classes, which makes it harder to understand.
Would absolutely not recommend taking this professor. Her tests are so much harder than any of the other BIMM 101 professors and she is incredibly unhelpful when asking questions. Exams are super confusing, even the TAs have commented at the writing of her exams. So much unnecessary work and super harsh grading. 100% worst professor I have had here
very great labs & explaining, very approachable when you ask questions.not tough like others said.midterm & final is ok as long as you study.try to get full credits on lab notebook, class attendance, final lab report:what matter the most in this class.midterm+final are ok if you watch lecture recordings+lecture slides,go to lab,do practice tests.
Professor Rusert gets a lot of hate, but I felt that way at first too because she seemed strict. I later realized she's strict because she cares. Her lectures are dense, so you have to study the concepts. Her tests are only hard if you don't know the concepts enough to apply them. She taught me that effort matters more than being “naturally smart".
She pretends that shes a good teacher in the beginning, claiming she does a lot of research on how to teach students- but she just reads off of a slideshow. Lectures are so boring (people often fell asleep next to me), and she has weird homework rules. I would avoid this professor at all costs, and definitely wont take her again.
Structure was awful, stressful deadlines for no apparent reason, and feedback was not given in a timely manner when needed. For example, final report was built off previous reports, and we didn't have previous report feedback until 2.5 days before the final project deadline. Large lack of clarity with content and instructions for assignments.
She's nice and cares for her students' success, but she is not a good lecturer. They're hard to keep up with and she assumes you know things. She also doesn't curve, and blames it on the students if the whole class gets mid scores. You'll be mostly teaching yourself for this class. The homework and quizzes are light, though.
Lectures are hard to follow because she moves too quickly and assumes background knowledge, often overcomplicating simple topics. For a course meant for students with no prior biology knowledge, it's tough to keep up without a lot of self-study. The mediocre test averages reflect her pace and her grading style.
I think her lectures are pretty good, and honestly ppl grade her too harshly. The only thing is that she has there select all questions which are stupid hard and like make u lose points on the exams.
professor rusert is very passionate in what she teaches. although she reads off her slides during lecture, she adds onto those topics which i find very insightful. midterms are fair with everything on it what we covered in class. the class is fast paced but she does her best to help you understand the material :)
Rusert isn't a bad person, but she's not a good lecturer. She just reads off the slides without really elaborating. Her class has mandatory sections, handwritten HW, no curve, & limited extra credit. You're better off learning the material on your own than attending her class. Take someone else unless you want to be trolled by select all questions.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN AN ADVANCED BIOLOGY COURSE
reviews are way too harsh on her tbh. i personally didn't attend her lectures (not mandatory), but always kept up with her podcasts, which i actually enjoyed. you can tell she cares about her students. loved how she was very direct about the content that mattered for this course and told us what not to waste time on. i'd say give her a chance!
Dr. Rusert is a good teacher and is passionate about students learning. Beware though, she is extremely passive aggressive at times. Nevertheless, her class felt fair. Grade composed of two midterms, final, mandatory discussions but can miss up to 2, and hw graded on completion. She offers a few extra credit opportunities which was nice.
She doesn't deserve the hate for BILD1: lectures were interesting (to me), homework and quizzes super easy and light, and tests were fair. Just go to class and study for the tests, and you'll do good.
I FELT LIKE DRIVING OFF A CLIFF EVERY TUE AND THUR BEFORE GOING TO HER CLASS OR DOING ANYTHING RELATED TO IT SO MEAN AND RUDE AND JUST READS OF 100 PAGE SLIDE.
bad professor i learned nothing run away as fast as possible, her rating is way higher than it needs to be
