She is my favorite teacher ever. She's very funny and has an extremely interesting class. She's completely unbiased and keeps class entertaining.
Very helpful teacher, always has a good attitude, very prompt in returning emails. Her attempts at comedy are often funnier than her comedy. Grades fairly if not generously. Does good job relating politics to the current times.
I had her fall of 08 which was her first semester at AHC. If you do not take her, you are seriously missing out! She is fantastic, I would take her class even if you don't have to. She is the biggest sweetheart...she never gets mad, EVER. Totally helpful and one of the smartest people you will ever meet. She is a doll, awesome teacher and woman!
Awesome teacher, the best ever
She's great! Humorous and informative!! I highly recommend her!
Tests questions only cover what is in the powerpoints, so the book is unnecessary. A couple hours of studying for each test was enough to secure a 95% in the class.
She is a great teacher. I actually learned in her class. I resented her only for her portfolio assignment; most PolSci instructors have one. I would take her again.
Interesting material and wonderful instructor. Scarffe goes over all the material in class, thus I've never even read the book and I have a B+, just pay attention. The class can sometimes drag but Scarffe makes up in her wit and humor. I enjoy that she relates current events to the material that you learn, while allowing room for open discussion.
I'm taking this class right now with Professor Scarffe and it's one of my favorite classes to attend. I was never big on Government, but she really makes this class bearable. Class discussions are interesting and her way of making the material easier to understand really sticks with you. Tells you everything that will be on exams. Awesome teacher.
awsome teacher. IF you pay attention to her lecture and notes you can easily pass tests. I missed a few classes and still got "b's" on the tests.. do the work(not much). very enjoyable and funny. Makes you become interested in politcs in fun way
JESSICA IS AWESOME!! She is very willing to help you and opens her office time to anyone who needs it. Class is taught more like a university setting, with the need to raise your hand being eliminated. She is super funny, and makes learning about a subject that is otherwise boring, very interesting and fun! I recommend her to everyone!
She is extremely smart, helpful, and makes class 3 ours easy. It was hard for me, but its my problem with my English, but she the best teacher with capital ?A?.,
Very easy to understand and goes out on a limb to help you "get it." Assignments are interesting, fun, and help you learn about yourself and the world around you. Class time is divided between powerpoints, current events, and group assignments. Recommend ENG 101. Don't need the book.
Tons of work...too many papers she is requiring. If you have more than 2 other classes the work load is excessive. Good topics, fun discussions...she should take one of her assignments out of the requirements.
I loved the class, the book, and Ms. Scarffe (she is just wonderful). She is knowledgable, interesting, and the assignments are always relevant. If you get the chance you should take her class!
Great book choice. She does have too many assignments. Grades fair and has extra credit but it is hard to add any extra work to this class. Tests are on too much information (chapters) at once so even though it was online they are not easy.
Great class! Instructor very helpful, and wants you to understand and pass. Exams and quizzes were easy to study for. Class discussions were engaging. Not many big assignments, but the ones she did set counted. I'd recommend this teacher for those that government and politican science is not their thing.
After reading other comments, I wondered if we were talking about the same professor. I took this online, and found her workload overwhelming. 2+chaps/week&adds lots of links, youtube&powerpoint slides each week. Her online tests are timed&can't go back once answered. Tough on online course b/c she feels they have unfair advantage with text avail
A great and fun online class. She's very helpful and is reasonable grader.
I was very amazed with this teacher. If you have to take the class you will love her. She makes time go by fast and its fun to be there. I have learned a lot, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed her class. Just pay attention and review your slides and take notes. You will get an A or B by just paying attention and studying the slides and notes.
I have taken Ms. Scarffe for both 103 and 104. She easily one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is very helpful, understanding, informative, and funny! Wonderful! I was never bored, enjoyed coming to class, and am sad she doesn't teach anymore classes! Study and take notes!
I loved this class! I'm not really into politics, but her classes were always fun and easy to understand. I always printed out her slides before hand to take notes on. Studying was always easy and shes always there if you have questions. The big assignments need to be done, but there are only a couple. I loved that I always knew my current grade.
Mrs. Scarffe is absolutely brilliant! She's ever so helpful and wants you to do well. She's very funny and welcoming, always kind. I think the work load is simple, she's a fair grader. There's a big project, but she gives you a month's advance. STUDY THE SLIDES FOR TESTS. Do this and you'll pass. I'm taking POLY 104 with her now!
This instructor is very helpful you will learn a lot if you go to class and pay attention. Take her for POLS 103.
Great teacher, easy to talk, read your book take notes and you will pass test and quizes easily(:
Super nice! Genuinely helpful and engaging. Valiantly tries to restrain her sharp witty humor. Tries to remain neutral, but not always successful; we ALL have opinions. Textbook is liberal. She runs her classroom in an open, free, enlightening, and enriching manner like a good conversation. Fantastic lady.
Jessica Scarffe is a pretty good teacher. She always kept things interesting & has a great sense of humor. I think I would probably take another class with her had I been going down the road of Poly Sci major. Take advantage of all the great notice she gives for assignments and projects and do them EARLY. ALWAYS print the slides and bring to class.
Although I have never met her, this instructor knows exactly what she is talking about. Super organized, extrememly helpful, no surprises (you know what to exxpect from assignments and test for online at least). GRADES SUPER FAST, gives you great feedback to better your grade, and responds to emails at lightening speed
She is awesome. Very easy to listen and learn from, makes class time fly fast. You don't need a book at all. You don't need a single note. Just print her slides and study those. All quizzes/tests are based on slides only. Easy A in the class. Tests are easy - she is out there to make everyone pass with good grade. Highly recommend.
very straightforward class. just show up study and youll have it easy
She'll make sure you understand each sections and assignments but if you're not sure ask questions. The study guides are very helpful. She'll tell the class what materials will prepared them for the tests: slides, textbook, and video sheets with questions.
Jessica Scarffe is an amazing teacher. She is really in it for the student, and wants to see you succeed. If you put in the time and effort, she makes it easy for you to get a good grade. She's consistent, and very funny. Almost no use of the book, and study guides & essay questions before each test. Sweet, hilarious, brilliant, and unbiased woman.
Wonderful teacher! She is fun and funny. She tries to engage her students and get them to fully understand the concepts. She got me interested in a topic that I thought I would hate. I wish I still needed more GE classes so I could take her again. PS - get started on the portfolio early, don't procrastinate!
Just pay attention in class, take notes, and look them over. It helps to print out the outlines but I only printed out like half of them and still got an A. The class is not an easy A but Scarffe actually knows what she is talking about which makes the class interesting.
I am taking two classes for my major but PoliSci103 is my favorite. Professor Scarffe is always upbeat and funny. She is very clear, informative, and very organized. There's a variety of assignments to keep it interesting as well as class participation (that is not embarrassing) that really helps to grasp the subject. Highly RECOMMENDED!!!!
Down to earth. 90% lecture class w some activities and films. Have powerpoints ready, book is required but I had lil use for it. Most of grade is exams but others are important. Schedule and time frame are clearly explained. Class is tough, but the work you put in will make the grade.
Mrs Scarffe is passionate about what she teaches which makes the course 10x's better. This was my first government class taken and I did well on. She's a fair grader. There are no suprises she gives you study guides and a timeline ahead of time on when things will be do. Highly recommend her !!!
She is by far the best teacher I have taken at Hancock. I just finished up my third class with her and it was fantastic. I typically don't talk to my teachers outside of class but really enjoyed coming to her office hours. She is very helpful not just about the class but life or school in general. Great classes if you really want to learn something
I was a little worried that I was going to get a bad teacher for Int'l Relations (Its my major when I transfer next year), and that it would ruin my passion for the subject, but then I got THIS teacher! She is HILARIOUS, smart, and pretty. She gives great feedback on the essays, and the homeclasswork is challenging but I loved it, Thanks Scarffe!
Such an awesome teacher! makes class interesting and is super funny! You will have to study.. but everything is on the slides. couple quizzes.. 3 tests.. 1 project (start on it early).. and a few 2 page papers where you connect concepts in class to current news. Not a hard grader but not an easy A.
Jessica Scarffe is the best instructor I have had in college and actually, best teacher I've had my entire academic life. You DO have to work hard in this class but she makes it interesting and really wants students to succeed. Put in actual effort and study thoroughly. Really enjoyed her class. She has an awesome personality too!! Take her class!
Weekly online Discussion post, several exams, and quizzes, a few essay assignments
Great teacher, funny, easy to understand and there for you if you need help. Although, her class is tough a lot of work, the required book The Jefferson Rule is very hard to understand I couldn't get past the first page. Didn't touch textbook more than once.
She is a great teacher. She has very specific deadlines for everything and schedules to help students stay on track, which I personally love. I took the online course and she posts many videos and articles and even her own slideshows so students can learn the material in many different way, plus reading the textbook.
Scarffe was an amazing teacher; first she keeps her class engaging and always does an amazing job at explaining whatever topic were on that day. She made me want to switch my major to Political Science, she was so good. Her class can be a lot, make sure you dont wait till the very last minute to do the portfolio. But other than that shes really
Professor Scarffe gives positive feedback. She grades assignments quickly.
I took her class online. It was a lot of work. She gives good feedback and when emailed, she answers and will help you. Do read the textbook intensively. There were weeks when multiple things were due and some weeks were slower than the other. Do not procrastinate with the portfolio! I may take her again, but certainly not online.
Mrs. Scarffe is hands down my favorite professor at AHC. Not only is she hilarious in class but she also genuinely cares about her students. She makes her grading criteria very clear and she grades according to the syllabus. This class is NOT easy, however if you put in the work and do all of the exam study guides, you will be fine.
There are tests every section but if you follow the study guide you're good. She tells you what she wants from the class, and I don't remember if we had a textbook but we had a novel to read and she wanted us to bring that into discussions and tests. Just do the work, and you'll get the A.
Shes a really funny teacher. She does alot of lectures but she expects you to read a lot. The final assignment is not that bad I did it in two nights and got a perfect score. The book is worth about 10 points on each test so if you don't read it just make sure to do all the multiple choice and you will still pass. She lectures and provides slids.
I have taken every political science class Scarffe offers and she is by far one of the best professors I've had. She is very smart and she really cares for her students. She tries to engage the class in discussions. You will pass any of her classes if you just go over the lecture notes and submit your work. She is a fair grader with good feedback.
I was excited until this class! Tried to stay motivated-never want to think about it again! she tries to inspire students, too much reading, always available to help, but will lie to your face Quote: "I am required to make it hard bec. it's a transfer class." Never got a C b4. Other teachers not this hard. She was funny. Tries hard, but too hard!
Good teacher but a perfectionist. Lots of essays even on the tests. Has a portfolio that is due and it is large project on top of all of the normal assignments that are required. This should be a four unit class with all the homework. The teacher required reference all materials on everything even your discussions that were due each week.
This was Scarffe's first Presidential Elections class & I think she did great! I learned so much about the elections process and much more. I loved how she tries to be as unbiased and neutral as possible, which I greatly appreciate. Just a few online quizzes&exams, DQs, and papers for this 1 unit class. Hope she continues this class in the future!
She makes you do a lot of stuff to understand the material but some papers she made us do were pretty useless like the DQ's were not helpful for the test or quizzes they were just random and especially that big project towards the end that was totally unnecessary it was just a bunch of essays you had to write about random topics.
Did a great job keeping the lectures interesting, engaging the class. Has lots of group in class assignments which is helpful to receive a free 10 points every 2 weeks. The 1st final was the hardest, but the rest of the class was smooth. Lots of opportunity for extra credit, and was an easy grader. Each quiz was online (5 quizzes- 10pts each).
short and simple : AMAZING. She's very smart and makes this class fun and interesting . You work hard but it's fairly easy if you pay attention. 4 News items,5 discussions, 3 exams, 2 papers and a map project.
Took Scarffe online and her class is organized. Every week you have a simple discussion and a five point quiz. Three tests in total (multiple choice and written) which are easy enough. However, she makes you over-source/over-cite EVERYTHING. Her test questions are subjective, oddly worded, and slightly biased. No textbook req., only powerpoint.
If you're looking for an easy A or if you're expecting to get by on the bare minimum don't sign up. But an American Government class is bound to be some work. Super well-organized. She's really nice & funny. Overall a great teacher. She makes the material interesting & explains it well. All the work is outlined, so you know what you're getting into
If more than three tags could be added I'd put; respected, inspirational, accessable outside class, caring, group work, and definitely would take again. The absolute best teacher I've had of 2 years at Hancock. She really knows her stuff and explains it all in not only easy to understand ways but comedicaly at times making a dry subject enthralling
Jessica Scarffe is THE best teacher I've had, EVER. Her lectures were amazing and I learned so much! There's some reading and homework, but nothing crazy. Homework assignments and online quizzes were easy. One large project due near end of class. Overall it was a great class and I highly recommend taking it!
She's clear in her explanations and very friendly. She also goes out of her way to get all points of view out there. Her classes are mostly lectures and a few videos or audio clips, though there's constant group activities. Homework is mostly reading. Projects are easy.
Jessica Scarffe is one of my favorite teachers Ive ever had! Her lectures are amazing and she makes sure everyone understands by asking if anyone has any questions. There is about 5-6 in class group assignments but theyre usually easy! I never read the textbook and still received an A. Offers extra credit opportunities and office hours.
I have never been good at taking my own notes in a lecture, but she makes the important stuff clear. She answers questions well to the point of understanding. She's willing to work with you if any problems occur. She was a great teacher. I put in minimal effort and I was still only 4 points away from an A. It is an easy pass, but you actually learn
Very interesting and engaging. High energy: fun and funny. Very clear and caring.
Best teacher by far!
This Chick has got one hell of a ladyb0ner for citing sources. Basically, Write some made-up opinion and cite some random line of the power points and you're golden baby.
Shes an amazing teacher! Super understanding and gives great feedback on homework. Shes not that much of a tough grader. Her tests are some what easily just take good notes and read the slides and book. Not that much reading since its straight to the point. She provides you a link with the book so thats great!
She's very kind! but damn she's hard. Im not into politics but I still tried my best. Love that she's point based, helped a lot. Kept daydreaming in her class but if ur into politics passionately then pick this teacher for sure. Very passionate which is a good quality. Wish I choose another teacher. Just glad I don't ever have to take this again
Took Professor Scarffe over Fall 2019 for POLS 105. She was a great professor, gave us monthly 2-3 page essays, 3-4 exams, one 8 page essay, and a final project. We also had 4 group discussions, which was my least favorite part of class, but it was fine. Overall, great class and would recommend to anyone interested in politics.
I rarely read our online textbook and relied mostly on the slides. Passed the class with an easy A. Always gives feedback on your assignments with how you can improve or even just a simple "well done". She seems to really care about her students. Very simple structure of a a discussion post and a quiz a week and a 2-3 essays throughout the course.
Gives numerous extra credit opportunities throughout the course. Very understanding and not too heavy on the lectures. Would definitely recommend taking any of her courses.
One of my favorite professors at Allan Hancock. She is very encouraging of open discussion in her classes. I've notice that students are much more likely to speak up and share their opinions compared to other classes. This can keep the class from dragging on and getting boring. She is good at managing the time for discussion vs lectures.
Professor Scarffe is caring, funny, and inspirational. She really cares about her students. I actually have fun in a political science class! You should really show up because she covers the exam material in good detail. I'm pleased to have taken this class. I was inspired by this teacher to keep going. Thanks for being so motivational.
She's a really hard teacher. She does give extra credit, however after a certain point, she won't accept your work. She was not an easy teacher to take. I would recommend a government teacher who is a lot easier.
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is so kind and has an amazing personality. I am not interested in politics at all, but she keeps the students engaged in the lesson. I would recommend her!!
Professor Scarffe is one of, if not the BEST at Hancock. She is very professional and was accommodating during the COVID-19 switch to online class. There are 3 exams, and a couple papers in between. If you put in the work and study, youll pass. Shes a sweetheart and you will enjoy any class you take from her.
Incredible professor. She really cares for her students and wants everyone to succeed. great humor and interesting lectures. two thirds of the course was on zoom because of Covid19. But when the tests were in class, the written response essay questions were graded much tougher than expected. I'm not a genius aka your mileage may vary.
She was an OK teacher, I wouldnt take again just because political science is a tough subject for me and having the class online didn't help me understand anything because of my lack of focus. I didn't need a textbook for anything, we had to write a paper on local government and law stuff and it sucked but still got an A so I think anyone can do it
She's was a very tough teacher. I did like her, but she's very hard. I wouldn't take this class again because it's not something I would be enjoying much.
Professor Scarffe is one of the best!! She gives extremely good feedback and is a flexible grader. I took her online class and she was super understanding of circumstances regarding late work. Her class is really interesting too!
One of the best instructors at Hancock hands down her passion and brilliance stokes excitement and desire to learn more as a student. She's tough but understanding and realistic. do yourself the favor and take Scarffe's class.
A very nice professor. She is very nice and she is passionate about teaching to her students. Highly recommen taking her
Very awesome. You can tell that she cares about her students passing. She offers extra credit opportunities, which is amazing. Highly recommended this professor
I love love love prof Scarffe. Out of every class Ive taken and hancock hers are my absolute favorite. She is extremely knowledgeable about anything politics and is unbiased and factual. I have truly learned so much and aspire to be like her someday.
Great professor. She's awesome and funny
I enjoyed her class. Although it was over zoom due to COVID, it was still awesome. Highly recommended professor
Professor was a good teacher, wouldn't take again tho just because i felt like the lectures didn't interest me too much. she does give good feedback on grading. many quizzes, 3 exams, no final, two papers.
While I learned a lot from this class and am glad I took it, my grade kept going down to a B on my discussion board posts that were otherwise well-written if I didn't properly cite my sources. Extra credit is helpful, however, if you don't do it, it will just hurt your grade. It can make the difference between a full letter grade.
Her lectures are awesome. She is an amazing professor. Extra credit is offered, and it helps a lot for your grade. Scarffe is a highly recommened professor for POLS 103
Very awesome teacher. I would take her again. She is a very nice professor.
Had her for both POLS 104 and 105 and she was an amazing and caring teacher who cares about the subject and tries her best give her students the best grade. A little essay heavy but she is a generous grader. Definitely would recommend if you are interested in politics.
Awesome professor. Her classes are awesome.
Awesome teacher. I would love to take one of her classes again. A bit tough on assignments, but still really awesome to have as a professor.
She's fantastic
Jessica is a lenient grader if you follow her guidelines in the syllabus. Make sure your grammar is good in her assignments. Make sure to cite when she asks. I would make sure to do the extra credit if she assigns any. You will learn a decent amount in her class if you actually read the slides she made.
At the start of the term, every assignment is clearly outlined in the syllabus. There are no real surprises, just do the work, listen to feedback, and you'll get a good grade. If you have questions don't be afraid to ask. She is likely to respond sometime on the same day. There is not much work.
The criteria for this class was very straightforward. She gives feedback for every written assignment. Make sure to read the slides that she provides it is more helpful than the textbook. Don't be afraid to ask questions as she will be more than happy to help you. If you do the work you will be fine.
She was the best online prof I've ever had!! You can tell she genuinely cares about the students and the subject. The Canvas course was well-organized, assignments are clear, provided so many extra resources, responds to all of your work with great feedback! There's a textbook but her slideshows contain everything you need to know for the tests.
If you are thinking of taking one of her classes, do it. She is a very attentive teacher. You can just tell actually likes what she teaches. She has given me great feedback and is not an impossible grader. There is a bit of work to be done for the class, but that's expected- it's not hard work just takes some dedication- like any class.
