Very easy class. Attendance is mandatory, and Ms. Spearman is nice. She is however very liberal and outspoken. She is opinionated and does not tolerate other people's points of view very well. I would recommend her if looking to take an easy class, but don't expect to be able to voice your opinion if it is different then hers.
Her class was by far one of my favorites this semester. You only write three major essays, with short responses here and there. She sets up meetings to critique your paper, and always gives good feedback. She's very opinionated, but that didn't bother me at all.
She is a great teacher, very helpful! She gives great feedback, and is always willing to help you on your paper. She allows you to miss up to four classes with no questions asked! She is opinionated, however even though I didn't necessarily agree with all her views, I never felt as if she forced them on me! I would HIGHLY recommend her!!
Loved her! Go to class and do the assignments she gives you. Only 3 major papers that are worth most of your grade and she is very willing to help if you need it and set up a time to do so. She is very liberal and isn't afraid to debate on common opinionated topics, but your opinion will not affect your grade if you can argue for it.
Ms. Spearman was an amazing teacher! She taught you everything you needed to know. We had a light work load and if you needed help she was always there. As long as you read the book, do the assignments, and go to class you will pass with flying colors. She was the best English teacher I've ever had and I'm happy to have her for English 1102.
Mrs. Spearman was by far my favorite teacher! She was always willing to help and you were concerned about your grade, she was too. She encourages meeting at her office hours if you need help with your papers (which I highly recommend).. She makes class fun, but Be sure to attend class regularly because this is one thing she takes very seriously!
Jessica Spearman used modern material to teach required EOC in a fun and interesting way which has prepared me for ENGL 1102. She gives clear feedback on papers and is very helpful in all stages of paper writing at her office hours. You can earn an A in her class if you put forth the effort. Great teacher.
Great teacher. very cool and laid back, lets you speak your mind, even cuss in class, but expect to be able to support your arguments. Really improved my writing as an individual, if you attend her office hours you will surely get a good grade. Helps you pretty much write papers, very open minded and willing to actually teach. Also a lot of movies
The work load is ridiculous, most of her assignments aren't even necessary, they're just busy work. She also rambles. About politics and heavy-metal music and injustice. She doesn't give A's for essays, but she is willing to work with you when it comes down to it. The class is more annoying and stressful than I expected and attendance is mandatory.
Decent teacher. Too much emphasis on social justice which drove me insane. Told her to her face that the social justice topics are really one sided and boring and she was 100% okay with me writing about a different topic. She is very approachable and a joy to talk to (If you are liberal). Honestly don't feel like I learned all that much.
She's an awesome teacher, she focuses on identity. Sometimes the discussions were annoying but it really makes you think about yourself which I liked. USE BIG & SMART SAT WORDS IN HER PAPERS, this will give you so much credit with her!! and please use citations. She makes you brownies and blondies at the end of the semester also. I highly reccomend
Ms. Spearman is one of the best professors I've ever had. I hate English and am terrible at it but with her class I felt like I actually learned how to write. She does assign a lot of homework that feels like busy work but its not hard at all. She is so hilarious and really approachable. Tough grader when it comes to essays but you really do learn.
Ms. Spearman is the best professor ever! I loved her. Yes, she gives a lot of work, but all of it helps with the final grade including the fact she gives major extra credit points for the semester. She is funny and great at what she does. Just be open to participate in lectures and interact. She gives clear writing rubrics with example papers!
Pretty good teacher, expects a lot from you as a writer. Very specific with what she wants in your papers. Class is very time consuming. If you are an athlete I do not suggest taking her class. She does not allow athletes to make up missed assignments due to travel. Attendance is not mandatory but you will miss A LOT if you do not go to class.
Okay so here's the thing: Great teacher! You only have 3 MAJOR assignments, but you do have weekly work but it is not hard to do. You can work ahead on it. However, just manage your time and you will be okay. She means business, but she's a sweetheart also! Very helpful and you do have peer reviews (all ENGL classes do)! Overall, show up & do work.
She is very opinionated and extremely open. Leave your feelings at the door, get ready to write, and you will do just fine!!
She is an amazing teacher who is very passionate about the class and her students! There is weekly homework assignments and ONLY 3 major papers throughout the semester. Attendance to her class is vital to succeeding, but she rewards the students who go to class with extra credit opportunities.
Ms. Spearman is great teaching people how to analyze, think and write. But she's very liberal and she's very pushy about it, so if you lean conservative, keep your mouth shut. There's homework every night and some of it seems unnecessary but do it anyways because she'll ask. Get the books, that's where the reading comes from. And do citations!!!
She is awesome!
Great teacher. Very specific on every assignment, if you mess up not her problem should have read directions. Does give extra credit. 3 major papers. A small essay every week. Tons of work. Expects you to be an amazing writer and if you aren't you are in trouble.
Spearman is a very good professor. Do your work and go to class and you should be fine. She does have very set instructions for each paper, so as long you follow them you should do great! She is usually very forgiving and will give out lots of extra credit opportunities. You can definitely tell that she cares about her students!!
She is amazing! There were only 3 major writing assignments and about 5 response papers. She gives you 10 extra credit points for going to the writing center and offers a lot of other extra credit opportunities. You have to do a peer review for each paper which isn't bad at all. She is very open minded and great to talk to! Take her!
Spearman was clear from day one on what was expected of her students. She respects all her students and their opinions. Speak up in class and you'll get noticed and she may remember your participation. If you do the work exactly how it says to in the rubric, you'll do great. She is very helpful!
I took her for ENGL 1101 and I loved her. I took her again for 1102. She's a huge feminist and likes to talk about her cats a lot. She's hilarious though. Read the readings and you'll get extra credit for the pop quizzes. If you go to the Writing Center, she will give you extra points on your major writing assignments. Go to class!
Prof. Spearman is a great teacher. She allows for individuals to be open minded in her class. The work is not hard as long as you follow the rubrics she gives you will get a good grade. She gives tons of extra credit opportunities and gives points if you go to the Writing Center.
Prof. Spearman gives SO much extra credit- there's really no reason to not do well in her class. We had 3 papers during the semester and occasional in class assignments and homework. I'm not kidding when I say she gives like 100 bonus points opportunities. She's super reasonable and willing to work with you for your success!
Amazing professor; definitely would choose again. She makes the class so warm and welcoming. Be prepared for major essay assignments and peer reviewing it can affect your grade if you decide not to do those assignments.
I loved Professor Spearman. You could tell she was passionate about English. Her grading is clear, and shes always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you do well. She gives a ton of opportunity to get extra credit. Shes laid back, but if you try to take advantage of her, she can turn real quick. So just respect her and meet her halfway.
A very passionate professor. Tries to help as much as she can. Attempts to increase your skills. Highly recommend for incoming freshman.
Professor Spearman is an excellent teacher. She is the best English professor at Georgia Southern. I really enjoy how she makes the class fun and talks about real life topic going on in the world. Actually, she's like a History and English teacher all in one. The only downfall is I wish that she taught during the summer and teach 1102 in the Fall.
Jessica is very lenient if you communicate with her. She always makes class very interesting so it makes attending a lot easier. There were only 3 papers throughout the semester and the topics were normally interesting. I would take her for every class if I could, if you don't take her you're missing out on an interesting and easy course.
There was a lot of peer work. She is very strong in her opinion but other than that she was very helpful. The assignments were actually kind of fun and she wasn't a super hard grader, show effort and she'll help you get the A.
Professor Spearman is very good at making sure each assignment is clear. She is understanding and cares about her students. She is open about politics and how she feels about religion and everything. However, she respects others' opinions. You won't regret taking her course as long as you go to class.
So I am here just to tell you the truth. She's a pretty cool teacher, but she does go overboard about how she hates trump. Besides that she is a lenient grader and gives you NUMEROUS opportunities to make your paper even go above an 100. All you have to do is do the stuff she says. Literally. Group peer review? Its 30% of your grade but easy 100
If you do the work you will get a good grade. GO TO THE WRITING CENTER. You dont really need the book but its cheap. My first A in a long time.
I transferred to Emory after Fall 16, but I wanted to come back and write this. She wrote my letter of rec, so it is the least I could do. Absolutely amazing person. Caring and passionate. Go to office hours and she will teach you how to succeed. That doesn't mean she will give you an A. She will show you how to earn it.
I took Ms. Spearman for 1101 and 1102. Overall, not a bad professor. There is a lot of work but its not hard work. If you go to the writing center she gives extra points on papers. Do the peer review or you seriously wont pass the class. Probably the easiest English professor for 1101 and 1102.
Best class I've taken thus far.
If you want a mediocore political science class instead of an english class, this is the right professor for you! She'll go on some pretty astounding rants about her political beliefs and will not allow amyone to disagree with her pr jave an actual discussion. Shes an "educator: and yet she isnt educated on anything she talks about
Do not take this class if you lean anywhere to the right of Karl Marx or Joseph Stalin. This is supposed to be a writing class, not political science. She shuts down anyone that disagrees with her and won't let them say why they feel that way. The whole COVID-19 situation did not help at all. Assignments online are hard to find and don't make sense
Professor Spearman isn't a bad teacher, but the work load can be a lot sometimes. There's assignment due almost every Friday and Sunday. Most of them are discussion post which are fairly easy to do. There's 3 papers due throughout the semester. She grades the papers very hard and is very particular about how your paper is formed and written.
One of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of being in a classroom with. You'll learn more about her political beliefs than you will about actually writing and don't bother trying to have an actual dscussion with her because she will just shut you down. She'll grade rather tough and give no real feedback. Do not take.
Ms. Spearman is tough, but this is college!! If you aren't ready to do the work--you shouldn't be here! She's really nice and lets you turn in late work. Yes, Ms. Spearman talks about politics, but everyone should talk about politics--it controls almost every part of American life--duh! Go to the Writing Center and get bonus points on papers!
Professor Spearman was a great english professor. The papers and writing assignments were interesting and very insightful with actual meaning and value for later in college. She does a great job of explaining how she grades and there are several opportunities to iron out all your writings before actually submitting them. Great Professor!
Her class is extremely easy; however, they're a lot of busy work. Most of the work is liberal based, and can be frustrating to write about. Despite this, Professor Spearman does not force her beliefs onto you. If you come to class, turn in work on time, and do the extra credit, there should be no way you don't earn an A.
Professor Spearman was a great teacher. Her class was a little tough, but if you stick with it you'll be fine and learn a lot. There is always peer review and one-on-one review with Professor Spearman to discuss and edit your papers. There is a lot of reading and annotating, and there are also a good bit of discussion posts.
Workwould be so much easier if the teacher was more understanding. She uses the argument that we are all college students and should be performing better, but she ignores the fact that writing isn't everyone's strong suit.I just don't appreciate being made to feel dumb or criticized because I don't comprehend tasks or her online structure is unclear.
I don't even know where to begin so I won't.
I actually enjoyed being in her course. I will say, there is a lot of work in here but it's nothing hard, and if you do have an issue with it contacting her is very easy. She is also very understanding and is nice enough to give you 3 days after the assignment is due to turn it in with understanding point deductions.
She is very political so if that is not your cup of tea, do not take this class. She is a pretty tough grader with papers. Overall she is okay but sometimes hard to understand. I will not be taking her next semester.
She's the sweetest teacher ever. She really cares a lot about her students and gives many opportunities for them. The only thing i would say is she's kind of hard to understand when it comes to explaining certain assignment. She also does give us a lot of discussion questions that have to be completed.
I enjoyed taking this class, however I understand how Ms. Spearman may not be the professor for everyone. She doesn't shy away from political issues and controversial topics, however she makes sure not to force her beliefs onto anyone. If you disagree with her beliefs and want a conversation, make sure you have facts to back yourself up.
Ms. Spearman was amazing, she is very funny and provides adequate resources to help finish an essay. The work isn't too hard at all, some may just be more time consuming, but it will likely be a lighter workload than the rest of your classes!
I took professor Spearman for English 1102 in Spring 2023, I really recommend her as professor. She is a caring professor there is a good bit of work to be done in her class but its nothing extraordinary! Throughout her course we wrote three papers, and had about 4 'critical readings' where you go through and annotate. Highly Recommend!!!
Easily the most condecending and rude person i have ever met. She has no problem publicily embarassing you to make herself feel better and does not take criticism at all. Her directions for assignments are very unclear, and she will cancel class right before it starts without letting us know; very political and talks about her personal life a lot.
One of the worst people/professors I have ever met. She blames students for everything, and her instructions are so unclear that the assignments are very difficult to start or finish. She puts little effort into class structure then gets mad at students for what she said. She is overall very hard to understand, and makes everything political.
Personally, I wouldn't say I like her, but I wouldn't say hate either. She blames students for a lot of things, and it makes me mad. I will say good thing is that if you do good for her class you won't have to take final. Get ready to read tons and tons of work.
Ms. Spearman is nice but very opinionated so be prepared. There is not many assignments and only two larger essays.
Ms. Spearman's class is not too hard and there is not that many assignments. She is nice, however she has no problem making you feel uncomfortable and makes everything political. Also she always extends our deadlines which is nice. Overall, I would recommend her class if you don't want a difficult class, but you aren't lazy!
She is definitely very opinionated and political, and I can see how that would make some students uncomfortable. She also was often flat-out rude to students, didn't answer certain emails, and took forever to grade papers. I do think I'm a better writer now, but I don't know if I would chose to take her class again knowing what I know now.
As a person, one of the most approachable humans I've met. Super kind and welcoming and understanding of everyone. Don't disagree with her political opinions, just smile and nod if you want good grades. As a professor, sometimes difficult to understand and her homework/papers are very lengthy and hard to figure out sometimes. Questionable, but nice
shes very opinionated and political making it feel like a political science class, its best to stay quiet if you disagree w her and shes not exactly friendly but tolerable ig. she offers a lot of helpful extra credit and all assignments revolved around 2 essays. overall it wasn't the worst experience but i won't choose her as a professor again
Extremely political to the point where I dreaded ever talking to her. I have my doubts that she even read most of the assignments, aside from the big papers. Most of the extra credit is quick and easy and gives so many points you can take a 0 on the final paper and be fine. Would never take this class again due to busy work with no purpose
She is extremely political and it makes it very uncomfortable to participate in class. She assigns work that is extremely unclear and difficult to understand. Only good thing is she assigns heavy EC and that helps your grade a lot. I would not recommend.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but don't skip several classes in a row or you'll miss not only EC, but she'll dock your grade. She's liberally political, but very kind and listens when you talk. Even if you disagree she isn't gonna dock your grade. This class is impossible to fail if you do the work with the amount of extra credit it's an easy A.
She told me unlike wasn't a word. All of the literature is left, politically. There was never a devil's advocate or right leaning figure in place. Teaching such topics, students should know both sides. I'm leaning left, so don't take my opinion biased. She reviewed papers harshly, didn't provide rubrics, feedback, or guidelines in a timely matter.
fade this class
she is very political and doesnt respond to emails
shes a bad teacher one time she just let us leave after 5 minutes because she didnt feel like teaching she said
she doesnt post anything online/folio
This teacher was not who she said she was the first day. The first day I had class she was funny made it seem like class would be fun but that was just false hope. Mrs spearman was the epitome of a lazy teacher. She wouldn't reply to emails and wouldn't post anything on folio. If you missed one day with a valid excuse, say goodbye to your grade.
I wish she was better I want to be good at writing
I wish she didn't get distracted by talking about her own views and taught 😔
Do not take
Took her class last year while dual enrolling, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. She doesn't BS at all and definitely speaks her mind. Didn't have to do any heavy reading. She taught me how to use AI responsibly (which has majorly helped me now that I'm at UGA). Was extremely lenient on due dates. Provides you with everything you need to succeed.
Don't let the reviews fool you, the class is not as bad as long as you come to class and get your work done on time. Most things are a completion grade anyways. Yes, you will do ONE research paper, but she gives us assignments that will help you form it. I would take this class if you want to be a little challenged.
This is the hardest class I have taken in my college career so far. But you will pass the class if you complete all the work on time and don't slack off. She doesn't give clear instructions on the papers you write, so make sure you talk to your peer review group. If you are not ready to put in the work, then you shouldn't take this class.
IF YOU GET PUT IN HER CLASS FRESHMAN WITHDRAW I PROMISE YOU
nothing on folio, doesnt respond to emails, lets us leave after 10 minutes because she said we can and doesnt teach just sits on her chair and hands out packets and just tells u to just do it, whenever you ask a question she never answers it but just tries to belittle you and gets off topic and you just sit there uncomfortably while she clowns u
you know your a bad teacher when you tell your students on the first day of school saying that you don't care what other students say on ratemyprofressor and you told us all ur bad reviews were just fake but after pushing through the class for not long I realized you know your a bad teacher just do better bro like ik ur reading this jus do betta
Extremely disorganized. Class often ended early with little real instruction. Constantly interrupted students and talked down to them. Claims to be supportive but is rude, loud, and condescending—especially over email. Worst professor I've had so far. Avoid if possible.
Prof. Spearman gives almost 200 points worth of extra credit and has a 2 day grace period on all assignments! Do the work and it's the easiest class you will ever take! She gives you free snacks in her office and other personal items if you need them! She's awesome!
Don't listen to the reviews talking about how political she is. Politics will come up during class. I participated in the discussions and disagreed with things, but I was never afraid of that affecting my grade. Her assignments are about your major and aren't political. She offers 200 extra credit and a grace period for her due dates. hard to fail!
She's a good professor, I dunno what to tell you if you take an English class and then complain about having to read and write. Lots of extra credit and clear instructions. Pretty funny.
I took this class and it can be confusing so be prepared, if you do bad on a paper or discussion, don't be scared I had a few bad assignments but still ended up with a 96 because of all the extra credit, she also gives a 2 day grace period, but make you stay on top of you work or else you will struggle, overall good professor.
I didn't enjoy this class. I felt like she was always taking down to me and acted like i was stupid. When i would get a bad grade on my papers i would ask her what could i do to fix it and she never really told me just kinda vague. Would not recommend
