Dr VandenPlas is hilarious. She's easy to approach, and therefore very helpful. I had her for lab, and she was really easygoing- I wish she had room in her 116 lab.

If you've had previous chemistry classes in high school, then this class can be a drag material-wise. Otherwise, her personality and interest in the subject and students keeps the mind engaged.

Dr. VandenPlas was a fablous teacher. I repeated chemistry because my previous semester was not good. She taught the material in an understandable manner, she was more than willing to help students during office hours, and has a great personality. Highly recommend.

Dr. Vandenplas was a great professor! i hated chemistry before i had her and she made me enjoy it. and i actually did fairly well i was really pleased. fyi, you dont really need the textbook, she says this though in the beginning of the semester.

Professor Vandenplas is awesome. She really knows how to break down the material and teach it to students. Book is not really needed unless you need extra practice. She assigns WebAssign homework every week and there will be a quiz every week. If you have taken a college prep chemistry in high school, this entire class will be a review.

Since she was so down to earth you could go to her for help which she was fantastic about. She was a really funny prof and seemed to care about her students and how they did! If you have her, you're so lucky! She's great!!

Dr. VandenPlas is an AMAZING professor. She is extremely helpful and cares whether her students understand what's going on or not. The way she does things are helpful as well. Homework helps with the discussion worksheets, and both helps with exams. She's also super nice, show up one day and you get extra credit. By far, one of the best professors.

I'm not sure if she is a new teacher or something, but something about her just frustrates me. She spends days on the same topic and her class is always behind on all the material. If you want an easy A go to her, but if you want to learn more, stay away.

SO HELPFUL!!!! Would take the class again just for the professor, she goes back over things and slows down if you need help. She will go over the test review with you if you need help, Had her for all 3 of my chem sections and lab we always got out at least a half hour early. She makes things so easy!!

I had Dr. Vanderplas for chem 109 lecture and I recommend going. You will lost if you don't attend but if you do go to lecture then you don't need the book. I probably used it once. She gives lecture notes and every discussion is a worksheet for the quizes. Pretty easy just need to keep up and go over the work she gives.

Best science professor I've ever had. She explains things in a way that make sense to the most people, which is so important in general chemistry instruction. She'll bend over backwards to help you understand something, is very fair in her test material, and easy to follow in lecture while stopping periodically to make sure everyone is on board.

After getting a D in high school Chem, I am passing this class with a B+.She explains material so well and gives practice exams before tests which are similar to the real test. BEST PROFESSOR she really wants to help. GV needs to clone her for all GVSU chem classes!! TAKE HER YOU'LL LEARN AND GET AN A! you do have to work hard but its not difficult

Professor VandenPlas is the most concise and engaging professor I have come across. She is fair, helpful, and makes class humorous and interesting. If you take advantage of her office hours, she will walk you through problems until you master them. The only reason I received a lower grade is because I lacked effort, not due to her teaching.

Oh my gosh, I seriously think this professor will be the best professor I will have the rest of my life. If you don't get an A, it is your fault. She is so good at what she does. 1 homework assignment a week, quiz or exams on Fridays, nothing is a surprise. I would do anything you can to get in her class.

Dr. VandenPlas Is an amazing professor. She holds weekly discussion which is optional but SO beneficial to you if you go. If you ask her a question she will respond clearly and make sure that you understand it. The tests are tough but she is willing to talk to you about study techniques. loved her so much i'm sad to be ending chemistry.

Dr. Vandenplas is one of the best teachers I've had at GVSU so far. Her lectures and discussions are optional, but you do have to go to the lab to pass. She posts all of the notes on blackboard and answers emails about needing help. She will elaborate if a student needs help with a question in lecture and is very approachable.

Although its not noticed if you attend lectures or not, its recommended to go because it makes the weekly quizzes easier. Do expect some trouble with the online homework.

She is an amazing professor and cares if we understand the material or not. Gave us extra credit multiple times. Homework due online every Wednesday (manageable). Class is optional but going really helps. Some in class assignments and some participation points for certain assignments if you're in class when they're given.

I didn't open the textbook once; her lecture slides had everything I needed. Online homework was a pain, but she understood that and was lenient about it. Take her class!!

I LOVE Dr. V. Best professor I've had at GV thus far. She really wants to make sure everyone understands what is going on. I thought the tests and exam were very challenging but I understood everything that was going on. Chemistry is hard but she makes it less hard. I wish she could teach me every science subject I need to take.

She has quizzes every Wednesday that make you keep up with the material so the exams are not as hard to study for. She does put harder questions on the exams but that's fair. I would recommend!!!

CHM 116 can be a tough class for some people and Professor Vandenplas made it super comprehensive. She is always willing to answer questions so that you understand the material to the fullest. Her tests and quizzes are very fair and you will get a lot out of the class.

By far the BEST chem professor at GVSU. I failed chem in high school, I felt hopeless. In her lecture, I felt so confident in the material. Chem is obviously hard, but she made it so much more understandable. She was extremely helpful and prepared us well. There is one hw assignment and one quiz every week, but they were not hard. I've never had chem before but she made it seem so easy, however you'll still need to pay attention and do the hw to pass. She has a good sense of humor and tries her best to keep lectures interesting. She's also very helpful. There were a lot of hw, quizzes, and tests, but she dropped the lowest grade for each.

She is an AMAZING professor that I would 100% recommend, but at the same time it is still a hard class so don't expect to just show up and get an A. There is H/W due every Monday followed by a short quiz but you will know exactly what to expect. She is the best Chem 109 professor just make sure you work hard in her class and go to discussions!

Best professor ever! She is by far my favorite professor so far at GVSU. As long as you do the homework and pay attention in lecture you should be fine. Her discussions are optional, but I would defiantly recommend going because the worksheets correlate with her quizzes. She offers easy extra credit at the beginning of the year so do it!

God bless Dr. V. Absolute gem in and out of class. Always more than willing to help and offer guidance. Tests can be little trickier than the provided study guide, but once you figure out how to study for it, the class is a breeze if you attend lecture, discussion, and do the HW. Reading the textbook helped cement the ideas but not 100% necessary

I had her for lab. She's very nice and easy to work with. We usually got out around a half hour early. I am terrible at chemistry but did well in lab. Basically, if you show up and do the work then you'll get an easy A.

Vandenplas is my all time favorite professor at GV. She is an all around great teacher and gives you her individual attention (especially in the discussion portion of the class so make sure you get her for that as well as the lecture). She gave two very easy opportunities for extra credit so do both no matter what.

Dr. V is an incredible professor. She makes an effort to get to know all of her students on a first name basis, despite it being such a large class. She was always willing to help students and explained content very thoroughly. She goes through her slideshows pretty fast, so taking notes ahead of time would be ideal.

Dr. Vandenplaus really cares about how much her students learn. She knows the material very well and is super efficient in her explanations of the material. If you go to class and pay attention, this class is an easy A. Discussions are very helpful and she comes by and personally asks if you need help on anything, including homework assignments.

Professor Vandenplas was very approachable to contact with questions and concerns. Course material was laid out well through her syllabus and schedule. She posted helpful video lectures, with everything for the week due on Friday. She was very bubbly and fun to have as a professor. No exams during covid, just fun projects!

She is passionate about chemistry and really wants you to learn! She is also very understanding, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Cares about her students a lot. Would recommend.

I adored Vandenplas! She's so sweet and caring, she really wants her students to do well and was always understanding! She treats her students like equals and is so kind when it comes to mental health or just things that get in the way of doing homework. You will not regret taking her class, she is fantastic.

One of the best IMO. She really seems to understand the students and adjusts her teaching accordingly. Make a mistake on something? no worries, send her an email and she'll gladly work with you. I would bet 1 million dollars that if you ask any student what they think of her, it'll only be good things. If you have the opportunity, choose her.

Great professor to take online chemistry. I never attended class and hardly ever used the book. Her lecture videos are really all u need. Despite literally never attending class, i never felt like I needed to because the videos she makes were really all I needed to pass all of the quizzes and I have a 93 in the class right now. Very well structured

If you are dreading chemistry like I was and just need something for a gen ed requirement TAKE THIS CLASS. Everything is split into 4 categories of assignments, but none of its difficult. There is over 500 points offered, but once you hit 350 you automatically get an A in the class. One of the best classes I've taken.

She was an amazing professor. Lectures were fun and interactive and she always makes sure to stop and see If the class is still understanding. She has the class set up so you can get up to 700 points but you only need 350 to get an A. She couldnt have made the class any more accessible for students especially if youre nervous about Chem.

Dr. VandenPlas was such an amazing professor! I had prior experience in chemistry and just had to take it for gen ed, but I was super glad I chose her class because of her "choose your own adventure style." I was able to attend class for things I had forgotten, but otherwise, I just had to do some work on my own and I passed easily!

Professor Vandenplas was a total g, she made her class easy and was always really about her students. She structured her class to make it very attainable to get the grade you would like.
