Hard to understand due to his accent. He is not very helpful at all. Currently, I am reading and studying the book a lot b/c I understand the material a lot more by doing that. His lectures are pretty much pointless and never gives practice problems in class. He just gives equations which aren't helpful since he never applies them to anything!
He talks very fast, and he has a really thick accent. He is hard to understand, and only explains things directly out of the book (which I think is poorly written), he doesn't provide a differnt angle to look at the problem. His lecture notes are posted on the day of lecture giving almost no time to look them over. It is his 1st semester.
I couldn't decide whether to stay in his lectures or shoot myself. Going to class makes no difference, you are basically on your own.
He's very helpful to students if you go in during his office hours and ask - he sat down and gave me lots of example questions til I got the concept. He does have an accent, but it isn't so bad - after a few class periods you get used to it, and if you sit up front it isn't so bad. He puts his lecture notes on the web before lecture. Used clickers
very strong accent, does not take time to stop and explain things if some of the class is not understanding it. expects a lot from students prior to class. very difficult to learn from
This class almost made me hate chemistry, which is one of my favorite subjects. Tests were written along with Joseph Burnett, and it seemed that they were far more interested in writing trick questions than testing what was covered. I studied 3x more for this class than my others, and did the worst in it. Definately take it with someone else!
I totally love chemistry but I dreaded coming to this class. We were always behind, and you could simply print off the lecture notes to know exactly what you were going to cover (because you would not be able to understand what was being said in lecture). Attending lecture was pointless but mandatory due to his clicker questions. I am sure I tau
His accent is so bad, and he tries to talk so fast. That while you are trying to figure out what "potaschum" means (thats potassium) he is already on to the next topic, or maybe he might jump back to a previous topic. You never know what he is talking about at any given time. You basically have to teach yourself based off of his lecture notes.
Should be required to take ESL classes. All but impossible to understand. Jumps around too much when giving examples. The gap in difficulty between tests and quizzes is very high, there are kinds of problems on tests that are never discussed in class. Expect to learn from the book in this class, I dread the lectures, only attend for the quizzes.
Really nice and tries really hard, but has a very heavy accent.
He is hard to understand in lecture but he is very willing to help individuals if they need it. Take advantage of his help sessions and office hours.
Kingy, is the man. the myth and the legand. we have 10 mins of cartoons at the beginning, need i say more
the king is great. he does have a strong accent but its not that hard to pick up on after listening to him for a work. he loves to show youtube clips and looney tune cartoons even if they have no connection with the class just to wake you up. if you need help this guy will deffinitely take the time to talk to you one on one anytime.
Very helpful teacher who wants u to do well. He offers help sessions before every exam and is always in his office 4 help. The lectures aren't very boring and when they are he usually wakes you up with a cool experiment. He's hard to understand but u pick up on it over time. Overall he's a great teacher!!! plus 10 mins of looney toons b4 every clas
Kingston is a great teacher. He's hard to understand at first, but you soon get used to the distinct speech. He's very helpful. But make sure you read the material BEFORE coming to class. Overall he was a very good teacher.
Not too bad of a teacher, but moves really fast through material
If you ever need help, he will go out of his way to do so. There were times when he stayed in his office with students from 4-8. Also holds help sessions before tests to review material. Accent difficult to understand at first, but he will go out of his way to make up for it. Makes chemistry fun.
Very difficult to understand with his thick accent. He jumps around a lot which makes it very confusing to follow the lecture. Make sure u get a good TA since that is where i learned everything for this class. Is willing to help if you go to his office hours.
most boring teacher ever!
Good explanations, keeps the class involved, funny guy too.
Really straight forward. Lots of people didn't like the accent, but it wasnt bad.
Attend class, do your homework, try to follow lecture notes. He has clicker quizzes over the material you learned that day, so you might have to read ahead to keep up. He's tests are fairly hard, his slides move quickly, and he has homework as well. If you have had chem before it shouldn't be too bad, but you'll have to keep up for a good grade.
Kingston is a great guy and tries to make class fun. However he also does a good job of making it very difficult. If you understand the tests from previous years you can still fail this years tests. Little to no curve so expect to work hard. It is still possible to do good though.
Smart and humorous guy. Played old cartoons before class which was cool. Sometimes he moves kind of fast. Found myself using the book to teach myself some of the material.
He tries hard to get you the help you need and is obvously a smart guy. The class though, no matter what teacher is pretty difficult if you dont apply yourself. If you do not read the textbook you will be in trouble because the tests and quizes are hard.
He was very interested in teaching and helping his students. He usually tries to include an interesting demonstration if possible. Although he is sometimes hard to understand you get used to it.
Not easy to understand.
He is a little hard to understand, but overall is a decent teacher. He wants his students to do well and has helpful lectures. The class is hard, so go in and see him during office hours.
If you can get around the thick accent, you should do fine. A lot of problems that appear in the tests are almost direct copies from the "Recommended Problems" list that is passed out. Mandatory clicker tests were annoying however, and many tested you on fresh concepts you just learned so were very hard to get perfect scores with.
He can be a bit hard to understand, and the clicker questions in class can get annoying, but he's a great professor once you get around this. He is very good at responding to emails, webct discussions, and any questions you might have. He also supplies you with lots of info, and the tests are very similar to the problems we do in class
He is very helpful. He knows stuff. he makes the class very interesting.
wonderful teacher...takes the time to help students after class and even held review sessions to help everyone get through the material. summer class is really fast...requires a lot of studying.
did not like, could not understand very well
Excellent Teacher! Accent is a little tough at first, but you get used to it quickly. Exams are exactly like old exams. great sense of humor, very helpful!
Dr. Kingston is an amazing professor. He really knows his stuff and is able to communicate it to students effectively. He is always willing to help you if you ever have questions. If you go to the review sessions, attend class on a regular basis, and ask for help when you don't understand then you should have no problem with this class.
Okay as a professor, but does not have any feelings what so ever. Wouldnt let retake a test for a funeral.
Dr. Kingston is not a horrible teacher. He knows what he is talking about but talks a little fast sometimes, or goes a little off track. Otherwise he is a good teacher. Always prepared for the test. Posts lecture notes online BUT go to class for clarification.
Has a small accent, but he is aware of it and works on it constantly. His demonstrations are awesome, but not always relevant. He does get off track about once a class but it makes the class more interesting and he still has us prepared for the exams.
Strong accent but I got used to it. Goes through material very quickly but that's just the nature of this class. Blows up gas-filled balloons and plays youtube videos to wake the class up during boring lectures. Fine teaching but you will need a good TA (I didn't) or you will have to study outside of class.
Pretty easy class, he was a great teacher and he tried his hardest to keep the attention of his students.
Kingston tries to make chemistry fun by making jokes, and sometimes they're hilarious! His accent is a little much, but you grow accustomed to it. Sometimes he presents different information from Greenbowe, but the recitation TA will clarify their discrepancies. He sends out a lot of helpful emails to remind you of what is happening in the class.
In my opinion he was a very arrogant teacher that would find time to pretty much make fun of students that were not doing well. I really did not like him at all.
I liked how he taught the lecture because it actually required me to take notes rather than mindlessly follow a powerpoint, so I actually learned something. He got frustrated when students did poorly on exams mainly because the most missed questions were often key concepts that he emphasized.
Kingston emphasized a lot of concepts and made sure you knew what was going to be on the tests.
I never knew what was going on. He went through the lecture really fast and I had trouble keeping up with the concepts. It's already a hard subject with A LOT of memorization, but I don't feel he helped make it any easier. He assumes everyone is as smart as him and can understand the concepts easily.
I had a really hard time understanding him. He assumed we all knew chemistry like the back of our hand. I probably went in for help every day after class. I also hired a tutor. Failed every exam but because I put effort in and met with him I passed. If you need help, just ask him. He's more than willing to meet with you.
Personally, not a fan. He has a rather polarizing personality as a teacher. I know people who loved him and learned a lot from him, and then people like me who couldn't stand him. I personally find him incredibly arrogant and hard to learn from. He has good and bad days, but if it's a bad day prepare to also have a bad day. He's very frustrating.
I think that Kingston is a pretty good teacher, but he was definitely better for Chem 178 than for Chem 331. He tends to put down students without realizing that he is making you feel dumb for asking a question.
He really cares about students understanding it and was VERY accessible for office hours or help. That being said, I suppose he isn't always the most helpful or clear, and lecture does go fast. But this is O Chem, if you thought this subject was going to be easy, think again.
very knowledgeable, but is a horrible teacher. Does not clearly explain concepts. Does not explain clicker questions that the majority of the class answered wrong. Bad handwriting. Belittles his students. Intimidating and unapproachable. Low averages on exams, doesn't curve until end of semester so you never know what your actual grade is.
He is very helpful and makes every attempt to help students. He offers many office hours and optional reviews. You will learn from him if you pay attention in class and put the time and effort into learning Organic Chem. He has an accent that is noticeable but understandable. Students who dislike his teaching aren't the ones putting in effort.
He was a mediocre professor. He is a very smart guy, but didn't always know how to lecture the material. This was his first time teaching 331 as far as I know so I will cut him some slack. I learned quite a bit and was able to tutor the next semester. Kept it simple, which is very important these days. Overall I would recommend him as a professor.
Little advise from a non-chem major student: Materials from general chemistry is helpful but not decisive. Use 9 hrs/week to learn for the first 8 weeks. Then change to 5 hrs/week for the rest. Memorization count for 20% of this course. Try to understand instead of all the way memorization. Go to office hour! Dr. Kingston is very helpful!!
kingston is AWFUL. i took gerneral chem 122 at DMACC. by far the worst professor i've ever had. he should not be teaching a general class. He goes through the material wayyy to fast....expects you to spend 8 hours per week on chem and he's serious. the beginning of his class is way easier than the end...but DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
Chem is a hard class no matter who you take it with. I took this as a summer class and it wasn't too bad. Kingston is good and he isn't too strict on when you turn stuff in. Avoid asking him a Chem question because you'll probably leave more confused! HIS TESTS ARE SOO HARD but he gives a lot of extra credit so it balances out!
Good Professor. Gives many many opportunities to do well. I do not understand how so many people can do so bad..As long as you don't just cram the night before and pay attention in class, these concepts are VERY straightforward! I honestly didn't study crazy hard for this class, and after the curve I had a 96%! If you want to do well, you can.
Best Professor at Iowa State. Truly cares about his students and their performance in the class. Offers so many opportunities to help and for you to do well and so much of his time to help and answer questions.
I am not going to lie, to me, this was a challenging course. However, one of the things that made me enjoy this course was Dr. Kingston's dedication to his students. He always responded to emails quickly and he was always willing to work with students who needed the extra help.
Favorite teacher at ISU! Expects you to put in your share of the work but will meet you halfway.
I went to his offices and he basically called me stupid and that i should change majors. Just cause I was a girl. He made me cry.... Would not recommend him to anymore. Heard the only people passing are the students retaking it. Notes are very scattered and hard to follow. Readings for each week do not correspond with what is in lecture that week.
this is one of the best professors you can meet during college. He has a little bit accent but still clear enough. He is super nice to student and helpful. only thing about this class is lots of clicker questions, you don't really have to attend class but i guess you will miss several points per class. Also he has lots of extra credits for student
Very very helpful. Always stayed after class. Had weekend review sessions. Always available in his office. He gives practice worksheets and all past exams. The material is difficult if you don't study, which most people don't, but easy if you do. One of my favorite professors at Iowa State.
Kingston is a really good teacher. Tests are hard, but he gives you lots of supplemental material that helps you study. He does fun experiments in class. Best Chem177 teacher.
Kingston is easily the best professor I've had through two years, he is always willing to help, even sending emails well past midnight offering help for students. He is clear with his expectations and offers every opportunity to succeed. Take him over any other professor and you'll be satisfied with your choice. It is necessary to work hard though.
Dr. Kingston was hard to understand sometimes. He talked very fast during lecture and I went in to office hours occasionally, but there were times when he was a bit rude. After a bit, he would just calm down and focus on the material. His notes during class were inconsistent. There wasn't a lot of flow, but his review sessions were fantastic.
Kingston is one of the best professors I've had so far in college. He is very passionate about the material and REALLY wants everyone to do well. He is very helpful if you have any questions. The material itself is what makes the class hard but Kingston teaches it well.
He went extremely fast and expected you to be the master of the concepts but otherwise enthusiastic!
He was a pretty decent teacher and he was extremely helpful when I wen tot see him outside of class. He talked with me for two hours! However I was at a D before the final but he made the final resurrection points so I ended up with a B!
Professor makes clear what you need to know. Despite his accent, overall he is pretty easy to understand. His quizzes are very similar to the questions on the exams. Make sure you go to class to get all the clicker questions.
Difficult to understand, gets better with time. If you attend his office hours, he is very helpful and accommodating. His class is very very tough though. Read everything you can, do practice questions and tests, and go to recitation EVERY time.
Kingston is the best professor. he teaches the material in a way that students can easily understand. he cares for students. He responds to emails. Many times, students take things for granted but he is such a caring professor. He challenges a lot but it is worth it.
Hands down will be the best professor I will have throughout my course work here at ISU. Clear, Concise, and Fair. He gives you unlimited resources to be successful in his course.
Great professor! probably the best chem prof at ISU. he is very helpful and exams are pretty easy and well written
You need to do so many of the clicker questions in order to pass. It is very easy for me since I already took a fairly advanced Chemistry class while in High School.
He is hard to understand sometimes and doesn't teach the content sometimes. I would say he is one of the worst Prof. I had. Last exam average was a D and he blames it on how a few students don't show up to class.
So I came in to college and the first class I had to take was chemistry 177. Unlike all the maniacs taking the class after they took AP chem, I had just a little background about chemistry. To make a long story short thanks to Kingston and his lectures office hours plus a little of my own work I learned to LOVE chemistry. I recommend 100 % !!
Tests are tough, but that is just the nature of the course topic.
There were so many assignments and I ended up missing a lot because I didn't know they were due, or they were so hard that I just gave up. This class takes a lot of work so make sure you have the time to learn it. I took it while taking a heavy load and ended up dropping it because I got so behind. Class is meh, but pick a different prof.
He is very helpful but his lectures can be confusing. Slight accent and definitely not a native English speaker (major grammar mistakes on every quiz). He takes your top 10 recitation quiz scores, we had 17 total, which is a plus. I must say at times he belittles students which doesn't contribute much to your learning.
He offers a lot of help if you visit him, but as most students don't, his lectures aren't enough. Attend class because he's always doing clicker questions, sometimes 5+ in a row. Started out decent, but towards the end it went downhill. Always check mastering chemistry because sometimes he'll post homework without a warning
At first I hated him. Hard to understand but eventually adjusted to his accent. His class isn't a breeze, but if you pay attention, do the home work, follow along in class, and get help you'll be fine. He cracks a few jokes here and there. He's a really good lecturer. Honestly I really liked him as a teacher and wish I had him for Chem 178.
Dr. Kingston was not helpful at all. When it came to the final score calculation he was not clear. Promised to replace exam scores with other exam scores but failed to do so and when confronted he put his email on automatic reply. He apparently likes to run from his issues instead of dealing with them.
This was a great class! Kingston is very passionate about what he teaches and really wants students to understand. His tests are very straightforward and you will do well if you read the textbook, go to class, and do the homework. If you have a question he is more than willing to help you. Overall, great professor!
Professor Kingston is a good lecturer and can only do so much in a class of 350. He tries to get everyone engaged and interested in chemistry. I wouldn't mind taking another class from him. He really gives you a chance to get an A with replacement exams and with the final.
Easy class if you have some chemistry background. Kingston is a great professor and loves what he does.
Kingston was an amazing teacher. If he was teaching Chem 178, I would have gone to his class in a heartbeat. He thoroughly cares about his students as he is very willing to help all of the time. He also has a good sense of humor and makes his lectures worth going to.
Dr. Kingston is very passionate about what he does, and shows it. He will help a student in a heartbeat. Also, he releases a lot of online tutorials and notes he makes outside of class to help students. Organic chemistry is naturally a really hard course, so go to class and use all available resources the school and teacher provide.
Try a little, and you'll probably pass
Dr. Kingston really goes out of his way to provide as many resources as possible. If you want help, it's there. To see how dedicated he is, look at the oldest reviews. He went from someone who was hard to understand and lacked imagination in his lectures to being a very good teacher with a light accent today. I highly recommend his class.
Easily the best professor I have ever had at Iowa State. He makes the hard information easy to understand. The class is pretty hard but if you go to class and pay attention it could be an easy A.
Hated him. Made me hate chemistry. The test are confusing as can be, and he acts like everyone in the class has an extensive chem background. I will NEVER take a class with him again. Terrible.
Attendance is important, due to clicker questions, but the option of two attendance times makes it easy to go to class. Also, you do not need the textbook; only the online code for the textbook and access to mastering chemistry.
Dr. Kingston is an excellent professor. I took Chem 177 and he is very clear from the beginning of the semester what he expects and how you can achieve your goals. He is very helpful and available when approached, so approach him early. He has a very "chemistry" sense of humor and will crack a few jokes here or there, decent lectures. Clickers!!!
Kingston is a great professor. He cares for his student very much. He explains everything very clearly. Does lot of interesting demos. If you pay attention in class, you will do great in his class. He uses clickers which makes attending class is must.
Kingston is a great professor in my opinion. Always has a great time in class, tells us everything we need to know in a well thought out manor. Straight to the point. If you go to class and do all of the homework, the exams really aren't that bad. Overall, my favorite teacher I had this fall semester
Kingston can be hard to understand at first, due to his accent. But you get used to it. He knows his stuff and is very good at teaching it. He understands that he is teaching rookies when it comes to chemistry so he doesn't over complicate it. He is also very helpful in office hours and is always willing to make arrangements to help students.
He is a GREAT professor but really tough with his tests and grading scale. He might curve but mostly he does not. If you go to his office hours he will be willing to help you but he teases his students, mostly laughs at what they don't understand. That is what I dislike about him.
His presentations are phenomenal. He is very enthusiastic about chemistry, and his lectures show it. He uses quite a few presentations in the classroom. Clicker questions are essential as they are given on the daily and graded. Even though it is a level 100 class, a lot of people end up dropping, so come to class ready to take notes!
This was my first chem class I have ever taken. Dr. Kingston really starts from the bottom and builds up. If you use the resources he has you will do great in the class. Although the class seems hard he makes his test easy. He also records his lectures so if you miss a day you can look watch the class. He does do clicker points so its best to go.
What makes him stand out is how helpful he is to students outside of class. Hods reviews on Sundays before exams, posts old tests, etc. I had a very poor chemistry background and went from failing my first exam to getting an A- in the class! I put in a lot of work, but with his help and explanations I learned to not hate chemistry anymore.
I thought he did a great job. He went out of his way to help students understand, and his practice problems were always more difficult than the ones faced on the test. As always, if you show up and put in your work, you will get a good grade. He takes away every excuse you could have to blame the professor for your grade.
Kingston a great teacher. He does in class problems that are harder then questions on the test so you are prepared for and know what is going to be on the test. He puts all of his lectures online so you can go back and take more notes or to use as review for test. He also hold review sessions before the test so you know what will be on the test.
Dr. Kingston is a very good professor because his expectations are extremely clear. He provides a lot of practice and posts his past tests as study material. And when he noticed people in the class were falling behind he started holding weekend study sessions to help people keep up. His poor review may be due to the subject he teaches not him.
If you go to class, do the online homework, and use his resources, this class can be an easy A. He holds review sessions before each exam and goes through practice problems, usually very similar to ones on the exam. He goes very quickly through the lecture material but records his lectures so you can watch them later. He's a great professor!
Dr. Kingston is a good professor he cares about student's success and provides many ways to succeed. Through very detailed study guides, study sessions, and being accessible outside of class. His course is hard and he has high expectations but he provides the means to meet his expectations and succeed.
Attending lectures is mandatory as he uses an interactive quiz. From here, he uses your answers to grade your attendance as well. The attendance part towers over the actual answer to the question. Quizzes can be slightly difficult but not unreasonable. Overall a pretty great class, just be sure to take notes and study. Stay on top of the class!
He seems like a nice guy, very enthusiastic when teaching. He seems to think that everyone taking this class already has extensive background knowledge of chemistry which makes his lectures hard to follow. NO EXTRA CREDIT, NOW WAY TO RAISE YOUR GRADE UP AFTER A BAD EXAM. Bad management with time on quizzes. Go to class, or fail. Literally the worst
Dr. Kingston is amazing. I attempted CHEM 331 four times. Dropping the first two, C- the third time, and an A the 4th. I had Kingston the first and last time. If you go to him for help, he WILL help you. He takes time out of his schedule to spend multiple hours with me a week. Organic chemistry is hard, but if you make the effort, he will too.
He was tough, but very clear in what he wanted and what you needed to know. I think he was a really cool guy and was good for organic chemistry.
Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the course. You better know your stuff because he expects everyone to have a detailed background of knowledge of chem before entering the course. Difficult to understand because of accent. Lectures are difficult to follow.
This dude is hilarious. As long as you show up, he is hands down my favorite teacher/professor of all time. He is funny, and likes to make fun of hung over people in class, so don't show up hung over.
Its difficult but he makes it enjoyable with his humor and his passion for chemistry. He also is very clear in his expectations for you and gives you plenty of resources to help out with the course. He is also really easy to approach outside lectures and replies to most emails quickly.
Do well on Mastery Chem. The quizzes can be difficult because the TA's do an awful job of helping. Kingston does give a lot of enthusiasm for his class, though and he tries to keep the class interactive. Don't leave class early because he will pull out Tophat if he sees people leaving. His review sessions help like crazy. Just go to class
Kingston is easily my favorite professor. He has great notes and provides a ton of review and study tools to do well in the class. If yo show up to class and do all of the mastering chemistry you will do fine.
Dr. Kingston is definitely my favorite teacher so far. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow, and the Top Hat questions in class help hammer in the material. He has also done quite a few demonstrations, which is a fun way to break up the lecture.
Very intelligent and knows what he's talking about. A lot of work must be put in outside the classroom. The hardest Chem 177 professor. Very good professor if you need to learn the material for your major and are willing to put in the time. Can sometimes be a little difficult to understand
Kingston is pretty fair and clear from the beginning. Although you don't technically need the textbook, I don't think you could get a good grade without reading it. He offered an optional test at the end that replaced your worst test. Also, gave extra credit to find mistakes in worksheets, study guides, etc. Overall, not a terrible class.
He is a very fair professor that gives good lectures and also gives ample opportunities for you to up your grade. I would recommend reading the book for this class and keeping up with the mastering chemistry homework, and you will do just fine.
Kingston is a pretty good chem lecturer, his notes are really easy to follow, but he has a thick accent making him a bit hard to understand. He can be really funny and works fun demonstrations into his class. I would definitely recommend him.
Makes you work for your grade. However, the textbook isn't really necessary with the online homework, as the textbook is included with your Mastering Chemistry. A clear, concise grader, but he definitely wants results and is a stickler on his rules.
Kingston is great. He gives so many resources and time for students and wants to make the class fun. He really cares about students which is always what matters most. The classes he teaches are hard but the way he teaches them is just perfect. He also follows the book so if you know the book, you know you'll do great.
You are going to have to show up to class if you want to pass. But he is far and away the best chemistry teacher I have had thus far. He often has additional review sessions for tests that are very helpful
Replacement exams, curves depending on class average, go to class and pay attention and youll get an A. Kingston is a great guy
