very unhelpful and difficult to understand
Excellent teacher, had a lot of energy. The material was explained very clearly and he made the effort to cover the material that was not understood. I received an A in the class. Highly recommended.
This guy is really hard. He provides little information to help you understand the basic concepts of mathematical equations. Also, he expects you to be very knowledge on materials that you haven't learned yet. Avoid him.
Avoid at any and all cost taking him for any Math course!
this is one of the best professors i have ever taken
I don't know about some of the unfair comments made about Mr. Martinez. I am afraid these negative comments come from sore losers that lack the brain, discipline and the committment, as a responsible student, it takes to get through Prof Martinez's class.
for those who got an A from his class, you guys were luck. But in real life his teaching style suck. By the middle of the semester their is may 4 student in his class. that is a bad sign..
Do not take this guy if you want to pass. Absolutely horrible--unsure of what he teaches and very boring. For the good comments that he received on this site, he probably wrote it himself because no real students like actually like him.
professor Martinez is a great teacher, not only does he explain things in such a way that it makes it easier to understand the textbook, but his tests are very fair if you go to class and take good notes.
A VERY difficult instructor. Not uncomon for the class to end up having 4 people in it by finals with 3 of them failing. Even the math tutors told me to drop him. Which I did thank god. If you are really good and math and want a hard challange take him.
I think this teacher should stick to teaching the higher levels of math. People who need alot of math in their college career probably like him. If math is NOT your strong point don't take him.Never take him in the summer- way too fast!
I had to take math 120 two times over before I finally got to take a professor that explained things in a way I could finally understand. Martinez went out of his way to help students. He gives a sample test before every test. This helped a lot! He's good
This guy sucks! He is so horrible. Not only did I not learn anything, I had to go to an outside tutor three times a week and I still ended up dropping!! If you're still in the class by the end of the semester, I commend you because this is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. AVOID HIM!!!!
I thought he would be a good teacher because he's always doing work on the board, but he didn't explain what he was doing well enough for students like myself who are not very strong in Math. I did the homework, which he never checks, and I still did very poorly on my exams. I ended up dropping.
Mr. Martinez is a great teacher--some people just expect to pass their classes without doing any homework or putting in any effort! He is very clear and helpful.
Hands down the worst. If math isn't one of your strong suits, "DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE" he teaches at an advanced college level and DOES NOT conceptualize material for easy understanding. So if LEARNING material is the plan DO NOT take him. I had to drop this class. VERY HARD "elementary algebra"
Seems to address questions well. A little harder on tests than in homework. Always willing to slow down and assit class in understanding better. Willing to work with students, very flexible.
He is terrible ask any student that had him.
He is a total jerk and he makes no effort to assist his students. For your own sake do not take him.
I had failed this class twice before getting a B with Mr. Martinez. Not the most interesting guy, but he just seemed to explain things really good. He was really helpful, and always gave sample tests. I would recommend him if you just need to pass, just take REALLY good notes.
horrible, one word said. doesn't explain concepts well and test material completly different from homework don't take this class unless u want to take another semi. of the same math class!
If you can take extensive notes, do over 100 problems a night, take a test like every 2-3 weeks, and YOU ARE GOOD AT MATH...Go ahead take him. He's kinda goofy, a little odd. (Looks like a hispanic version of Michael Moore) He only counts tests for your grade...HW is optional. To me...This guy sucks
This guy needs to go back to school to learn how to teach before becoming a teacher.
This guy is horrible. His class is EXTREMELY FAST PACED! He doesn't take more than 2 questions about homework or anything else before he moves on. His tests are hard because he goes so freakin fast. He doesn't let you try and understand what a particular section was before going to the next.
very helpful, doesn't collect homework. nice for a teacher.
This prof is insanely difficult! His tests dont even have much to do with the homework he assigns and youll take more notes in his class than any other 3 combined. I suspect the few positve coments on here were fot the other Martinez who also teaches math.
Taking this class with Martinez has been an invaluable experience for me. He provides a lot of clarity to the most difficult parts of the course. He is willing to help you if you are sincere about learning and if you take the class seriously. Martinez is no pushover when it comes to grading.
Great teacher! If you really want to learn algebra, take him!
Math 100 is a lot of work period! However, Mr. Martinez provided clear instruction on all material and I believe he also provided me with a strong foundation for future math courses. I got a lot out of the class and appreciated his patience and efforts.
May come across as this very hard teacher at first, but hes honestly very clear on all of his lectures. All of the other comments about him are from people who are probably hoping to just get that easy A, he makes you work for your grade but its a college course what do you expect? Great Teacher!
The study guides before the test are VERY VERY helpful
Fantastic instructor. Clear as a blue sky in his lecture. Strongly recommend Mr. Martinez.
one of the worst professors ive had. does not explain well and has difficult tests. be prepared to do a lot of homework. counts attendance but not homework, whats the deal with that?
Great teacher. Not a teacher if you are lazy. If you want to learn take him. He's hard but you can learn alot.
not only will you fall asleep but his lectures are clear and helpful.
This is one of the best teacher that i had. some students say that they don't get, thats because they don't do the work (LAZY!!!). Any ways i heard He is a Gamer and his a Big Zelda fan(ya i know what your Thinking MY PROFESSOR IS A GAMER)
i had a very dificult time in this class.. i couldnt understand him half the time.. and he would never help me out.
I took him for summer school.I had a difficult time understanding him. His examples were not clear and his class was boring. Attendance in his class is a must.He gives out homework, but he doesn't collect it. I thought he was rude to students, by the 3rd week of class he had about 15 students left.
One of the best math instructors I have ever had. He will help you out if he sees that you are serious about learning. You must go to class or you will miss a lot of stuff.
Avoid this teacher. Like someone else said, he checks attendance and but not homework. He makes very basic mistakes which can screw up the whole problem hes working on. He misses random classes too. If you can, take someone else.
i had mr.martinez and he is a great professor, he explains concepts very well. This is the 3rd time I have taken this class and I finally found an instructor that knows how to teach. Stongly recommend Mr martinez if you are serious about learning.
Do not get this teacher because there are better math teachers on campus. He has very hard tests. Also, when I took his class the majority of the class dropped out. I think there were about 5 or 6 people left out of the 40 who started in the class.
I strongly advise anyone to take professor Martinez. He is witty and fun. This guy really knows how to teach effectively. His tests are very fair and you attend class, pay attention, study your class notes, you will pass this and undoubtely gain a lot of necessary math skills. He will help you if you are motivated. This guy really loves his job.
Xango mangotreme! Very hard and does not explain very well. Drinks a lot of Starbucks...
i took this class in summer school so.. i started out on the wait list and the last day of class we had about 15 people left. i had a hard time with the book and teacher. they both didn't explain too much to me. i suggest study groups. study hard for test. all he grades on is tests and the final... work hard!!
Explains things clearly and in a manner that is easy to follow, book is kind of hard to follow if you do not attend class. Has a good attitude but he will become impatient if you try to learn by osmosis. Tests come entirely from the problems he works in class, that's nice!
Oh my GOD! This teacher is something else. He is the nicest guy ever and funny. Except for he spends more than half of the time telling jokes rather than teaching. If you want to learn math take Mr. Phillips or better yet Mr. Wong. Mr. Martinez teaching techniques are not good. If you already know math and want to have fun then take him
He's a nice guy, but a terrible teacher. He's hard to understand, he doesn't explain things well, and he has no patience with you if you don't "get it."
The class I was in started with 40 people and ended up with 7 or so. Unless your really into math I wouldnt take him to be honest. Not a bad person just a bad teacher.
One of the WORST teachers I've ever taken. Very unclear lectures. The tests/exams are really hard. Hard grader. Critizes students a lot for not asking questions, but he never presents problems for student in class to ask about anyway! A very hard teacher. DOn't make my mistake and take him. Find someone else.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is arrogant and seems to enjoy making students feel incompetent. He encourages you to ask questions, but then criticizes you for doing so. He does not give an partial credit on exams, and marks you wrong for not showing work his way. By far the worst teacher. Beware! Thinking about a formal complaint!
This is the best teacher I have ever had. He is very nice and very helpful and enjoys making students build self confidence. He encourages you to ask questions and will explain in a lot of detail what ever problem you ask him to do. As far as his tests is concerned, he grades very fair. He gives a sample test with plenty of time ahead to study it.
Horrible teacher, very discouraging, even insults the intelligence of the class. Math is my strong suit and I am struggling, so if math doesn't come easy for you then this class will be an extra challenge. Students tend to drop this class leaving only half remaining. Avoid this teacher, I urge you!
Great teacher. Very pacient and caring. Highly recommend Mr. Martinez
Horrible, if u want to learn with LOTS OF HARDWORK, go ahead n take him, he explains things badly which causes the majority of class failures, the way he grades his Tests are HARSH AND BAD!!! I failed his class with a D, and took it over with a different professor and got a B!!
This teacher actually got me interested in Algebra. I go home and can't wait to do my homework. I GET IT!!! I NEVER got it before. He is clear and won't move on until you understand. If you get a chance...take HIS class.
Professor Martinez was a great teacher. His class required a lot of work but I actually learned something from the class which is the reason that I'm going to school. He is very friendly and his practice tests let you know what the test is going to be like which is nice.

He is a very nice teacher, but be careful because he'll throw some unexpected things on the test and that's not bad enough, he'll also suggest and give you hopes of passing the class before your drop date saying that you'll have a chance of passing and then BOOM! the test turns out to be something that you did not expect
He is a good teacher, but he you with his teaching. He moves through chapters very quickly. He doesn't actually explain the problems to help you understand. If you take him good luck.
The class is not that easy. He doesn't really teach you, he basically just does the problem for you.
He gives very simple tests. The class is boring. He explains logical things many times and never asks for challanges. He doesn't teach think logically.
I would say that he is a pretty good teacher. Makes you responsible to keep up and do the homework, since he doesn't collect it, he just goes over most of it during class. Also prepares you for what will be on each test. Goes a little bit too fast at times, but is willing to slow down if you speak up. I'd take him again.
The professor is really great at teaching. I get so much out of this class. He really prepares you. If you are lazy then you don't want to be in his world. He will crush you. I like his teaching because there will not be many people left at the end and you can ask alot of questions. You really get a quality education from this guy.

An awful prof. Very arrogant and treats students poorly. I am good at math and felt very confused by his lectures. Has a bad attitude and is a bit of a pig, which wouldn't matter if he had a good sense of humor, which he does not.
i liked this class alot. The tests were easy and i'm not a math person. just do the homework and your golden. (but then your in college, it's your own damn fault if you don't do the homework and study)
Love his teaching style. He gets right down to the point. Gives a practice test before each actual test which really helps. Just be sure to find a note taking buddy in case you miss class. He will help you as long as you are not a flake.
I could not understand the man, and I could not read is writing on the board... it looked like chicken scratch... He went WAY fast and didn't call on people (sometimes) when they raised their hand for clairification.
I hated his class with a strong passion. He always stood infront of the black board and blocks what he's writing. He tries to be funny but he fails terribly. When his phone rings, he yells at himself for it, kinda weird. Do not take him if you want to pass with a "C" or higher.
Awsome professor! Mr Martinez made this class enjoyable and fun. I tried to take this class before and was bored to tears but I'm really glad I took professor Martinez this time. Great handouts, they help a lot on the tests.
Mr. Matinez is a great teacher. I always struggled with intemediate algebra but Mr. Martinez helped me so much when I went to see him that a lot of the comments to discredit this professor seem so unfair!
super hard teacher.a lot of people dropped his class. if i were you i will not take that class
If I could do it all over I wouldn't have taken Martinez. He makes fun of you if you answer a question wrong, he has difficulty with getting his points across, his exams are always too long, and he grades them really tough. If you do take him you should know that he models his exams pretty much exacly like his reviews.
He is very uncomprehensible. I did not miss a day in his class and i still failed his class, his attendance is not very good.
Terrible teacher, his attendance is anything but exemplary. Grades really hard, hard to understand. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I learned more from the book than by him teaching. He was very confusing and got irritated when asked questions
He is the worse math teacher ever! He grades really hard and put stuff on the test that he never taught. He does not know how to explain things and expect you to understand everything. Get super mad when you ask questions. Had to learn the entire book on my own. (most of it) DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This guy is the worse professor ever. How someone gave him good marks in the past is a mystery. I think they have him confused with someone else. I love to study math...but this guy needs to get out of teaching.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! He ditchs class alot he didn't even show up the day of the final, he doesn't explain anything well and he yells if you ask questions, he puts questions on the test that are not in the notes or book, and he grades really hard, and he wouldn't let me make up work so that I could go to my grandmas funeral, basicly he's a je
Mr Martinez is a great instructor. He explained things very clearly, I frankly do not understand what people are complaining about. His lectures helped me a lot and he provided us with a study guide before every test. Mr. Martinez got frustrated with winners and people that just sat there without taking notes or without doing anything.
He's one of the best Math professors at SCC.Since I took his class, I've gotten As in all of my tests in other classes. He teached us how to remember formulas and solve problems in easier ways. I'm taking calculus this Fall;I still remember what Martinez J. taught me(Math 120).Lazy Students don't like him.I'll take him again;I learned a lot from him
i have no idea how he could be a teacher. this guy dosen't even know what his job supposed to do... never helps students! the worst part is HE HAVE REALLY BAD ATTITUDE!!!!
WOW!!! I cannot beleive this guy is a teacher. First off you can't understand what he's saying because his english is poor, second he doesn't teach well at all, and most importantly as I found, the tests didn't reflect the homework at all. I'm not a lazy student I think he's a lazy teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!!!!
Want to pass without sacrifice? Don't take Mr. Martinez. Want to learn and polish up your skills? Take Mr.Martinez.
He is not dedicated to helping his students. He also could care less if you pass.
Do not take this guy by far one of the worst teacher I have had. I have come to him many of time looking for help and he was unwilling to assist. The class started with around 45 people in there buy mid way through the semester about 8-10 people were left and probably only 3 of which were passing. stay away
Online course. Gives nonsensical tests that do not reflect the homework. Homework amounts to three hours per night, every night. Does not accommodate student schedules. My entire class failed. Absolutely not helpful, impossible to contact. Does not keep track of students, does not bother to post grades. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Martinez is a very rigorous teacher. His tests are very hard. I am learning alot from his class, and I do not agree with some of the comments listed. Unless you put in alot of time, don't waste your time with this prof. I am glad that some people did drop the class because they were not doing any work. I came to college to learn.
This professor rocks!
I found him to be lazy, and uninterested in people passing the class. If you had a question you had to ask the tutor.
He is an awesome guy! The exams are kind of challenging, you can learn a lot from him. He is also really nice at towards the end. Worth sticking around.
You teach yourself, using the text book, videos and computer. Lots, of homework to handed in before testing. He is late or absent after holiday breaks. One time he was absent, and the notice was posted on the opposite board, so the whole class waited about 10 minutes before, discovering the note!
He is a good person, and his passion for math is obvious. If you really pin him down, he will explain concepts really well. However, he is like a maestro at the board demonstrating the math assuming we are keeping up. Be assertive for him to explain and use the Math lab and MESA and you will make it. Have character yourself to make it.
MR. MARTINEZ LITERALLY SITS IN CLASS AT THE HEAD OF CLASS AND CHECKS HIS E-MAIL, AND CORRECTS PAPERS. HE DOESN'T LIKE FOR YOU TO ASK ?'S AND SOMETIMES HE CORRECRTS YOUR PAPERS WRONG. IT TAKES FOREVER TO GET WORK BACK AND HE DOESN'T LIKE TO HELP AT ALL. IF YOU GET A BAD GRADE ON A TEST HE WON'T TELL YOU WHAT YOU GOT WRONG.. GOOD LUCK!
Stay away from this guy. He doesn't know how to teach and avoids answering questions. This is what you'll hear if you ask a question: "See this? That's how you get this." I'm serious, that's ALL, no explanation. He rushes and bumbles through everything. Terrible prof.
Very thoughrough, very helpful instructor. I have gained a lot of interest in math, I think I will major in it.
Just keep up with the work and pay attention in class and you'll do great! Also know the study guide very well because the material on the test doesn't differ much from it.
This professor is awful.
He was late the first day but still managed to pick up an espresso..Set off an alarm in the computer lab and could not turn it off and continued to lecture to the class. Seems to be useless when using the computer. First impressions always count. I dropped this class! Take Phillips!
U teach yourself in this class. We have computers in the room and most everyone is on their myspace including him. All he does is sit at his desk on his computer and have his aids do all the work. He is not helpful at all and is late almost everyday! Easy class to pass though its basic math just talk to his aids for help!
Way to much homework....30 + hours per weed
Just attend class, write everything he lectures on, spend a few hours practicing the type of exercise he puts on the blackboard, review the pretest and you will likely pass his class. He really tries his best to motivate students to suceed in his class. Don't take Martinez if you are flaky.
He isn't organized, doesn't provide adequate help. He just redirects you to the tutor. He had a substitute once who went around to each student providing help. I learned more during that one class than I have with the reg. teacher all semester. If you aren't good at math and need help like I did, take a teacher who cares more about your progress.
The first day, I though okay, he'll be a decent teacher since he was going over everything with us. The second day was totally different. I understand it's a Self-Paced class, but we pretty much have the textbook as our teacher. I did well in class, but he wasn't helpful at all.
Worst teacher I have ever had!! tests on topics he didn't teach. Horrible. Incomprehensible. Don't know why he is a teacher at all. Doesn't care about students. Avoid him like the plague. You will regret taking him. Out of the 6 remaining from a class of over 30, over 50% failed the class. RUN!!!!
I dont know about you guys but i think he is the easist teacher in collge. I am taking Math 120 in the summer and he doesnt make us do homework. If you can ace the tests and final, you will get A+. He explains everything and asks you if you have any questions.
Teacher will make you feel stupid for asking any questions, so you are not allowwed to ask any questions.
Mr. Martinez expects that you are a responsible and motivated student. Just that.
very very hard class. Dont take him if math is not your passion
Just words of wisdom to students out there. DO NOT take a math teacher that doesn't collect home work OR give quizzes thinking that it some how makes the class easier. Martinez didn't give either of these things which in my honest opinion speaks of laziness and an unwillingness to do what is best to students.
I'm not a math person, and it wasn't easy for me even when I did all the homework as well as studied for exams and received tutoring for hours on end. I felt like I needed feedback, like quizes and graded homework inorder to range my success for taking exams, but that isn't what Mr. Martinez does. It wasn't an easy course for me.
D0NT TAKE! HE D0ESNT EXPLAIN THE SUBJECT WELL! ATTENDANCE IS N0T MANDAT0RY WHICH IS G00D N0 HW AT ALL BUT I REC0MMEND D0ING IT ANYWAY BUT Y0U CANT REALLY UNDERSTAND HIM AT ALL HE CANT TEACH!
martinez teaches on a conceptual level more than a practical. you'll understand the concepts well. but figuring out the homework takes a lot of initiative on your part. also, tests are harder than homework from the assigned book. learn to do the trig problems - they are on every test. go to his office hours a few times to get tips on these.
This guy is beyond belief. I am amazed that he is even considered a 'professor'. This man has NO enthusiasm for his profession AT ALL. Read what everyone else has said about him, and there's your new teacher...if you dare.
AWFUL TEACHER! CANNOT TEACH!
This guy is a JOKE, he cannot teach and just cares about going through the material rather than the whole class understanding. Don't dare ask a questions because you will get yelled at! I hope he reads all of his ratings and quits because he is AWFUL. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Worse teacher I have ever had. He tries to make his students feel like they're dumb. I showed him a problem I was working on and he said "You are not on the right track" after he went over the problem I had got it right even though he made me feel like I was not even close. This guy needs to learn how to teach A.S.A.P! Do not take his class!
WORST MATH "teacher" EVER.. YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING HE SAYS THRU HIS THICK SPANISH ACCENT, NO CHANCE FOR ANY POINTS, NEVER ANSWERS ANY QUESTIONS...HE IS FAILING MY ENTIRE CLASS AND IS MAD WHEN WE ASK QUESTIONS..WOOOOOOOOOORSSSSSST EVVVVVVVEER
JUST DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It was worth dropping this class. I've rather get a "W" than an "F" on my transcript.
I was just coming back to school for the first time in a few years. He was awful! He has a way of making you feel stupid when you ask questions, he loses your work, he is late to class, and he talks around you. My husband took his class at a higher level and he ended up flunking the class as well. IF YOU GET THIS TEACHER DROP THE CLASS!!!!!!!!
I can't believe what some people are saying. Profesor Martinez is an exceptional teacher. Students with poor study skills will not find him to their like because Mr. Martinez does not screw around. He expects you to learn. Perhaps the problem lies with the bad student with poor or no study skills in math and not Mr. Martinez
He is a very boring teacher. I liked math unil i took his class. all he ever says when u ask a question is you have to study..you know. of course but i asked you a question for a reason. i dont recommand him.
He might be nice as a person, but very hard as a teacher. A lot of homework ? but he does not collect it. All grading is based on the tests only (5-6). Out of a ?full class? the first 3 classes, 6 students were hanging-on last couple of weeks. Can get mad at questions. Challenge yourself if you can or if you are good at math tests.
Not a good teacher at all, Boring and out of touch with students. If math is not your strength don't take him. I had no problems in the class because Math is something I love and I can learn from a book but I saw many other students struggling and his explanations left many confused. Bad & Rude at answering questions. Tests are very difficult.
Great teacher if you get to know him and show him you're interested in the class and Math in general. I have to thank him for helping me transfer to Caltech.
If you are taking Math 120 as a repeat or refresher or you don't mind learning on your own then this class is for you. I love math and have always excelled at it. He may be very smart but he definitely cannot teach math. Plus, part of the homework is required to do online. If I wanted an online class I would have signed up for one.
as a person he is very nice. as a professor he is very strict and will not stray away from the course syllabus. if i had a better understanding of the class prior to taking it then i believe i would have done better than i did.
So if you want to be completely confused, not understand, and basically teaching yourself, this is the professor for you. His explanations are not clear, he doesn't really answer a direct question when asked, and he does short-cuts without explaining how he did it. Basically, avoid taking this class.
If you need any extra help in math do not take this class. He gives homework but does not collect. grade based completely on test. fail test. fail class. No chance for any extra and he does not like answering questions
When I think I get it and go home to do the homework. I have no clue at what I am doing. Then when I do get the homework the text is something completely different. Then when you want him to explain you really don't know where to begin for an explination.
First off, I have always been very good at math, and I usually put away at least 30 hours per week for studying. However, the notes that I copied do not match anything in the book or on the homework. I also received and email from him, saying that I had missed a quiz that was not on any schedule or the syllabus. Avoid him like the plague!
he is ok as a person, but academically he does not know how to teach. he'll write a problem and when you're halfway done he says he made a mistake and change the entire problem. his work is nothing like the book and online work you're only given a certain amount of time or else he'll count it late or be locked. he can take 20min solving one problem
Would not recommend for someone who isn't fresh up on their math or isn't mathematically inclined. He expects you to know majority of material as if you had just taken the subject the prior semester. Nice guy, not the best teacher.
Great teacher. This guy gets down to business and does not tolerate non-sense from students. You have to be dedicated and serious student to pass his class with flying colors!
If you are a working student and are looking for a class that will work with your schedule. He dropped me (without notice or warning) for missing a couple assignments. I had paid almost $200 (the class itself and an online program). Does not understand working students. Also the tests do not reflect the homework at all. Horrible professor.
I was very dissapointed in this teachers performance. I found him to be rude and ineffective at this lower level class. He failed me as a teacher. You will learn more from tutors or the math lab than from him. He would not activate the computer portion of the math book that allows you to trac your work.
This prof has a pretty motivating and engaging teaching style. If you spend enough time studying his class lecture notes and prectice his pretest exercises you will do well. He can be gently rude if you ask stupid questions.
Confusing lecture style. All over the place. Doesn't like questions. He is hard to follow because he jumbles everything around. This is a hard class to begin with but especially with a poor professor "teaching"
Unclear, not helpful, talks to the whiteboard with chicken scratch.
The only way to get points is from one of the 3 exams. That is it. So if you aren't able to teach yourself from the text don't expect to pass this class.
Very difficult to understand the subject with his teaching style. Fast paced, expects you to understand the material after one example. Seems to talk down to students when they ask questions. He's starting to get nicer as the semester goes on, but I still have to go home and re-teach myself the material when class is over.
Got an F in the first exam but my grade picked up to an A on the next test. Mr. Martinez is very patient and teaches at a very high level. If you don't study hard, you will fail
This is a hard class made harder by having a poor professor. The tests are set up in a very confusing way. He lectures in a hard to follow way. Terrible.
The teacher moves to fast, and expects the students to teach them self. He has a cleaver way of avoiding work. He doesn't assess where his students are at and what they need to pass. He doesn't understand why he is employed and sadly only 6 out of about 40+ students got through to the final. I am not sure if the remanding passed? CAUTION
For one 120 He's not such a great teacher, he skates through material and hardly ever went back when students were struggling . Recommend taking a different teacher if you are not a fast paced learner
Don't take this professor. He's horrible at explaining & doesn't like answering questions. Almost all the students are failing the class. Choose a better professor. Pretty sad.
I don't understand why there are bad reviews about this teacher. I'm glad I didn't listen to any of you because he turned about to be great. He never collects homework but I suggest do it so you can do well on tests. He's an easy grader and will help if you need it. Do your work and pay attention and you will do great!
You don't get credit for HW. You grade is all based on test scores. Show up, ask questions and do the study guides. As long as you put in the work, you will pass. The final is cumulative and one of the hardest finals I've ever taken. Even if you do well on all the other tests, don't get lazy when the final comes. STUDY and go to the math lab!
Lectures show a PROFOUND lack of effort on his part. The majority of the lectures are him doing textbook problems. He chooses to spend the most time explaining the simplest aspects and glosses over the more complex concepts. We spent the fist 6+ weeks of the semester reviewing ideas from the required prereq, and are now having to rush the calculus.
I wish all professors were like Professor Martinez. He is no nonsense when it comes to respecting the way he chooses to teach the class, and for good reason. He wants you to be prepared when you move on to your next math class. He loves math, and it shows when he teaches. If you show interest, he will engage you. He truly wants you to pass.
Unwillingness to answer questions and sometimes even unable to do so. Most of the class was doing poorly from the start and he did nothing but attempt to shame. His study guides are not reflective of the test and My Math Lab does all the work for him and it doesn't help much on tests. Quote: "This is easy stuff guys". NOT PROFESSIONAL. outoftouch.
This was literally the last class I needed to complete my associate's & I couldn't bring myself to finish. He is absolutely the worst and toughest mathematics teacher I've ever experienced. Horrible instruction, closed note tests, unwilling to work with you after during his office hours... He knows math but not how to teach. Extremely frustrating.
it seems Mr. Martinez has good intentions, but he just doesn't deliver. He is somewhat arrogant, and I wish I didn't take his class. He poorly teaches the material we need to learn, then produces these unreasonable test. I feel he gives better grades to undeserving students because of he has some kind of connection with them.
He constantly talked on the phone during class trying to fix issues with the program we would use. Its not very hard he offers a lot of examples to look at but explains almost nothing, don't do the hybrid class he just sits there& goes on his computer. If you like to work alone& have enough selfcontrol to study& figure it out alone own you'll pass
Mr. Martinez was a good professor and I wouldn't have passed with out him, he grades easy and will answer your questions. He does get testy if you ask stupid questions tho, lol. Yes there were stupid questions asked. Study & you will pass this class. If I can pass, so can you!!! I wish he taught math 103 in the evenin so I could pass that class!!!
Homework's not required but you should do it for your own good. His teaching style is that of "you should already know how to do this". Not helpful in breaking down a problem step by step.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. He does not teach out of the book so you can't study properly. Anything you knew previously he says is wrong. The tutors in the math lab can't even help because he does everything his own way and it's wrong if it's not his way. He doesn't go over tests so you don't really know where youwent wrong.
He seems like a nice guy but he does't teach at all i had him for fall 2015 and everything is online, hes not very helpful and expects you to stay the full time no matter what. But he is understanding when you have something that is out of your control. I recommend not taking him.
When I went into the intro. the online class seemed like it would be easy. Well when you work full time it is extremely hard to keep up with the amount of HW you HAVE to do to pass the class. That doesn't count the practice tests you are required to do. I don't recommend this class with this teacher again. The only plus is he may grant extensions.
math lab goes along with lectures. studying in math lab helps alot
Definitely not caring at all
boring, only an hour on test, doesn't teach writes problems on board the solves them that's it however the pearson program is exceptional
Definitely terrible . Doesn't teach at all . Sits all class period & Doesn't do anything . DOESNT EVEN LECTURE . & gives way to much Homework
Final exam study guide was unless and unnecessary. 100 questions from chapter 1-9 for a 20 question final only on the last chapters. What the hell is going on.
wow i would never take his class again and would never recommend . Mr. Martinez sat at his desk the whole time didn't clarify anything. At times refused to help with questions students had. Stated that during tests we would not need calculators but really did.
I really didn't enjoy him as a prof. but I also took the computer assisted class. I feel like he enjoys math and what he does but you won't benefit from any of that by taking the computer assisted course. No notes, no lecture, nothing. I am awful at math but had to teach myself because of his lack of lecture. Take the real class and do the HW
Did not enjoy this class at all, homework overload, no joke. Final worth 40% of your grade. If you have to him, prepare to put in a lot of time for homework and studying for the tests. Study the heck out of the test study guides. If you can take another professor with a better review I would recommend you do that.
As an honor student, I really didn't expect to drop this class, but it's better than receiving an F. Class consists of 3 tests and a final exam (closed notes). He shows up late consistently. He seems perturbed by our questions. Most importantly, he makes mistakes frequently and laughs them off or gives excuses, like "had a senior moment." Run.
Martinez may be a hard professor but he is very flexible and understanding. His 6 week course was very compressed but it is not hard to comprehend. He give study guides for tests that are helpefull. Overall you can learn if you pay attention and practice
First two tests were easy. Before passing out the 3rd test he specifically stated that because he didn't see enough people taking notes during lecture, he made the 3rd test longer and more difficult. More than half of the class dropped throughout the summer session. He also lectures at an extremely fast pace.
I took the course during the summer. It's a tough course and the fact that its a 6-week makes it even harder but he provided test samples with the solutions. He also allowed us to use 1-page cheat sheet on one of the exams and provided formula sheet for two exams including the final. Overall, he is a good professor.
Horrible professor, worst class I have ever taken. Almost impossible to pass as he doesn't actually teach the lessons but expects you to teach yourself using the textbook. You will be dropped if you have a grade below 75% on any homework. Very defensive of his grading system even though it causes many students to fail! BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE
If it wasn't for Professor Martinez, I wouldn't have passed Pre-Algebra. It was a 4 hour Saturday class and I wish they had the same thing for Algebra but they don't.
UGH. This prof, tho. If you take his online class, expect to teach yourself entirely from the textbook. THERE ARE NO LECTURES. Just short videos going through sample problems. Feedback is lacking when you ask questions. You really need to be motivated to make it through this class, so maybe choose another professor if you really want to learn.
The Hybrid On-line class is not the way to go if you struggle in math. I like Professor Martinez but we need another 4 hour Saturday class for Algebra 100 not this Hybrid crap.
He is the worst. Your grades are dependent solely on just your exams and you have to teach yourself because lectures are filled with mistakes. He's also really sensitive and tries to embarrass you for leaving early and threatens to drop you from the class. Take any other professor, he makes this class unnecessarily harder than it needs to be.
This is a terrible class. Don't take it. If you struggle with math; you might just fail. My ratings keep disappearing and I'd like to know why?? This professor deserves 0 stars.
Professor Martinez course ins't as difficult as many people on here make it out to be. The best way to just get an A is pay attention to the lectures, do the online homework, and study for the exams since they are worth your grade. He posts study guide reviews on his D2L and has videos on how specific problems are done from different sections.
He graded based on 4 tests and the final, offered no extra credit, drops you if you miss more than 2 classes doesn't like to answer questions, gets frustrated easily. He also does not assign any homework.
3 tests with one drop and a Final. Be prepared to learn everything yourself. Does not check homework and grade is based only on your tests.
Just really makes learning math not fun Speeds through lecture and gives study guides that have you preparing for all the wrong stuff . Handed out the test and said it was going to be easier than the study guide but it was actually more difficult . Im convinced that this professor wants students to hate math . One of the worst math professors.
Tough subject but the teacher lectures in detail on all the important stuff. Be sure to attend the lectures or you will miss a lot of info
Speeds through lecture. Then makes slick comments before he hands out the test which is obvious that hes handing you an exam full of trick questions that were not on study guide. He puts questions on the test that he didnt go over .Your grade is determined by Tests only . Avoid this Professor if you can . Seems he wants students to struggle.
Unless you are able to teach yourself math, I do not recommend this professor. He gives zero help outside of the My Math Lab and he doesn't respond to emails. The homework is worth only 10% of your grade so even if you do all of the assignments you have to do very well on the tests to pass.
I tried to take MATH342 in the summer and it was VERY difficult. Unless you took algebra/calculus the semester before, I would not recommend him. He lectures through everything extremely fast and expects you to know/remember all the concepts already. Grade is exam based - on which you are not allowed to use any notes/cheat sheet. I had to drop it.
Majority of the class was struggling, and he taught the material extremely fast with little detail. I think he forgot that he's teaching people new concepts because he expects students to grasp everything just by watching him. He also talked the whole 2hrs with no break, and didnt let us practice problems on our own. Terrible teacher don't take him
He doesn't know what he is talking about, I feel that most people in my class could teach the subject better than him. There is an insane amount of homework, don't make the same mistake I did and take his class. Its an L.
cool teacher. he makes some minor mistakes at times but he appreciates when a student points it out. he loves the subject an really wants you to understand the stuff. he dont want you to fail.
You do not know your grade in the class until after the final. The class is based on tests so do good on them. The final is cumulative and I 100percent do not recommend this teacher.
Prof. Martinez is a sweet person. I had him for statistic and he is understanding and changes due dates and test days when he feels like students are not ready. He even lets you out early once you are done with your homework. Heads up though, EVERYTHING, even the exams and final are done through the computer even though its a face to face class.
This class your grade is based off of 4 tests. The homework is a lot to only be 10 percent of your grade. I failed one test and now I might fail the class. And you cant check your grade throughout the semester. Awful
I have never struggled with a mathmatics Professor like I have struggled with him. You can't hear him in class, he has no review/touch ups before any exam or final, doesn't even teach material, you have to learn on your own and then he reviews it, after locking homework for the week.
Hes a nice guy but is horrible at teaching. He made multiple mistakes during lecture and constantly had to redo the problems. His study guides are nothing like the exams. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Unless youre naturally good at math and willing to teach yourself everything you wont pass because you wont learn a thing.
I took this professor over summer for business calc. This was my 3rd time taking this class because my previous teachers were not good at explaining. Professor Martinez is an amazing teacher he was so good at showing all the steps and was very fair on the tests. My previous calc class I had a 35% and with his class I had an 85%. I highly recommend
Terrible professor. Taught lecture very confusing, when exams came he never went over it the following day. Study guides did not match up with the exams either. Terrible teaching !
Prof. Martinez made math harder for me. There is a lot of things that I would change about his ways of teaching but the first would be, take your time, there is no rush. He also kept wrapping around the same problem and made the problem way harder than it needed to be.
I beg any student who has the option to never choose this teacher. He will get his own questions wrong a couple of times per class. He will only work through problems, he will not teach them! You will be best off using Kahm Academy, the MathLab examples, and any online calculator that shows steps.
I really liked his teaching methods but he gave lots of work.
I'm surprised with the bad reviews. Professor Martinez is fantastic. The online homework has unlimited attempts. The tests are equal to or easier than the study guide. He is very flexible. He is a bit scatterbrained but is happy to fix any mistakes he made and responds quickly to emails. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
In my opinion he was a great professor who loves math and loves teaching others. His class is quite difficult but he is always willing to take time out of his busy schedule to help.
Prepare to learn on your own if you take any of Professor Martinez's classes. Literally don't even know how he teaches since he never does. All you'll find are videos that he posts every day (excluding the weekends), and from those videos you must learn the material on your own. I like learning math, but this professor is a no from me.
There is a reason why most students are failing his class and why he has the most negative comments on RMP. I took this professor twice. HUGE MISTAKE! NEVER AGAIN. When i took a different math professor I ended up passing with a B. And I did the same amount of work and covered the exact chapters in the book. It sad to me how he is still teaching.
This professor all though nice but assigns a ton of homework take at least a few hours for one section of homework so you have to do homework every day. He just goes through problems and ask if you know it but doesn't really teach you it. We look at him writing on sheet for 4 hours. Writing is not great, Not Recommended to take.
Professor Martinez is really kind and helpful if you have any questions/concerns. The course is pretty easy as the homework has unlimited attempts and the reviews for the tests look exactly like the tests. He also posts videos on how to do each question which can be very helpful! It's an easy A if you keep up with the work.
I think Professor Martinez was very flexible and understanding with due dates. The assignments were okay we had multiple homework assignments, four tests, and a final. I think you can definitely pass this course if you stay up to date with the work. Only downside is you had to basically teach yourself so it was hard when you don't understand.
Get ready to study and be on your own as I remember taking his class long ago. He was not really helpful. Made you feel stupid, and comments like" follow the yellow brick road". " mm maybe" ( with his finger on his lips). He is a harsh grader and wouldn't recommend if you plan on taking upper level math courses.
