Kind of hard to understand his accent at first but he's a really nice guy (brilliant) and his class makes calculus tolerable.
very hard to understand
Teaches too fast!!!
great teacher! makes the class interesting with his corny but still very funny stories..teaches at a great pace, although it's a little slow at times...test only have few questions so they count off a bunch if you miss them..but overall the class isn't too hard
Be warned, he is very strict. His worst comment was, "sometimes, we forget trigonometry and integration, but, you must...just unforget them." He wasn't kidding. I got a 35 on the first test, dropped the class and retook it and got a 96 on the second go around.
really hard, didnt explain things very well at all, i wouldnt advise taking him for ma 341
Doesnt explain concepts well, will test you on things he hasnt taught you

quizzes have too few questions, and the TA was horrible!
Hard! could not understand him and he goes waaaay too fast. skips all the steps he thinks we should already know how to do and does not explain anything whatsoever. everythin i learned i learned from the TA's practice probs and on my own. i would highly advise you NOT to take him!
He is sometimes tough to understand and he occasionally shows up to class late. He knows what he is talking about and most of the time he is really good at explaining the subject. The only problem is that his tests are much harder than the average Calc 2 teacher's and the maple sucks
I did't think that class was that hard, and there was a pretty good grade distribution. But others did find it very difficult. He is not super helpful outside of class.
70 % of my class received a D+ or below
Be prepared to teach your self, and if you're not a math guy, good luck
Very tough, but fair. If you really want to learn calculus and not just get through the course, he's a great professor to have. He's very helpful during office hours.
He teaches very fast and is hard to understand at times. He is a nice man with some funny jokes, but the class is very hard!
I thought that he was very good at teaching the material and I perfectly understood everything. He doesn't take up homework, and he usually goes over homework problems in class very thoroughly. I would definitely recommend him for MA 131
Spends too much time on somethings and not enough on others leaving you to teach yourself a lot of the material, but homework is not mandatory. Tests are hard.
he doesn't f*** around. The tests are like a pineapple shoved sideways up the anus. You WILL learn Calc II, but at the expense of a good grade. Recommended professor if you are a math major or like pain. Nice guy though, loves to help you.
Didn't see any problem with him. Every semester about half the class makes a D or lower, and when I had him, about half the class never came, so I think going to class was important. Whenever he said "this is an important problem," it would be on the test in a very similar form. He curved grades. I may be sadistic, but I'm glad I took his class.
Tests are huge portion of grade and very difficult after the 1st test because he tends to fall behind on material. He did poor job of concisely explaining problems. Major problem: refuses to curve tests even when failing to cover material. Had several yell and walk out of final exam. Very low A grade distribution Only C ever at NCSU.
sometimes hard to understand, but if you read the book prior to class and study your notes before the exam you'll survive.
I don't particularly understand the whole "accent" thing. He speaks very clearly. Material was not incredibly hard. He is very funny and loves to help you (occasionally he'll go over HW problems in class). I'd take him again. My only complaint is that he's always late but it's always before the 15 min mark of cancellation.
Dr. Rodriguez was a good professor his accent does not get in the way of his teaching you can clearly understand him. He works out his problems step by step and will try to make sure that everyone understands the info before moving on. Hw is not mandatory but it will help w/ understanding.
Class was very easy. I was weary of him prior to the class after reading most of these comments, but Dr. J-Rod did a very nice job. Goes over all the problems and gives you almost exact examples of test problems in class.
Dr. Jesus gives many examples while covering new material, bit scatterbrained but gets the point across. Recommend doing the hw/ reading to understand material better. Sometimes gets ahead of himself and skips minor steps when working through a prob without explaining beforehand which can be confusing if you're not working it out on your own.
Dr. Rodriguez taught fairly well. He is scatterbrained and talks really slowly, which can sometimes help you understand and at others, make you fall asleep. He really does want his students to learn and goes over HW problems in class. He also emphasizes that he "has time" to help you or clarify things you don't understand.
Dr. Rodriguez is very scatterbrained and difficult to follow sometimes. He came into my class every morning with a balled up sheet of paper with a problem on it. ha. Definitely wouldn't take him again!
Dr. Rodriguez is extremely hard to understand and very scatterbrained. You don't really need a book for this class. If you get good TAs, go to the review sessions and you will be fine!
He was a great teacher. Gave helpful examples in class and his tests are fairly easy. Definitely recommend him.
If you like to teach yourself and learn by the book, this is a good class. He is really all over the place and unprepared every day. The test problems are almost identical to examples in the book and homework problems. Homework isn't collected, but it's helpful. Do the readings, examples in the textbook, and homework problems and you will be fine!
Dr. Rodriguez is never prepared for class and makes a lot of simple algebra mistakes in his examples that he has to go back and fix which can take forever. He's also not easy to understand and tends to lose his train of thought pretty easily. Wouldn't recommend unless you have a background in Calc or like teaching yourself.
Nice guy, but always late and can't really explain what he's trying to explain. He does very simple examples in class and expects you to be able to do the harder examples on your weekly quiz. This class gave me a hard time
He is such a nice guy, I feel so bad when some of his students are rude to him in class, he will help you as best as he can, always!! His class is hard, I'm currently in it, and praying that I pass, but I know a lot of people who are doing well. He gives way harder problems on tests, but calculus is stupid no matter who is teaching it.
Dr.Rodriguez is a really nice guy. I think he was a fairly good teacher and I was able to get an A in his class. Do ALL the homework problems and go to the tutoring hours for help. Just keep track of everything and you should be good to go. And be respectful to him. He is scatterbrained like many have said but he really does try his hardest.
Dr Rodriguez tried hard to help everyone but often came of as confusing. He often came in late but just don't take the class seriously and do all the homework (not mandatory) and you will be fine.
So I dropped this class. I don't like math to begin with, and this professor just made it way more confusing. On the bright side, I had a great TA! At least Rodriguez tries...he tried to create a metaphor for relative mins by saying they were like valleys and there are many valleys in the world. My biggest tip would be to do the homework!
Very good calc teacher. Made the material actually easy to understand and had a funny personality that made getting up for an 8 am class OK. Tests can be a little difficult, but overall are pretty close to the problems from the textbook.
I don't want to be mean but I don't know how else to say it: he is the worst math teacher I have ever had. He never makes sense, he isn't helpful, and his voice lulled me to sleep on a daily basis. Luckily I have a decent TA so I might actually pass the class.
He is the worst professor I have and is no help at all! I would highly discourage anyone from taking his class! He has only one good TA and honestly the TA should be taking his class. Do the homework because quiz/test questions come from there. Also get old tests because the questions are the same, but the numbers in the problem are different.
His accent is very difficult to understand. Consequently, it is hard to understand his explanations of various topics. So far, I have survived his class by self-teaching, as many of the lectures have been useless. However, all of the homework is out of the book, and the problems on the test are very similar to those in the homework.
Dr. Rodriguez is a nice guy, but he does not speak english well and he is very hard to understand. This class is not recommended at all to anyone who is taking Calc for the first time ever. (Horrible mistake!) His TA's are the ones who grade and they are extremely harsh. Wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Rodriguez was late to class multiple times. His notes are disorganized, he almost never finishes examples, and he is not helpful when asking questions. He might try to help, but it just makes you more confused. To do well in the class you have to learn the material on your own. Just read the book.
The good thing about Dr. Rodriguez is that he didn't give WebAssign. If you have not taken calculus before in high school or had some foundation of calculus, I would not recommend this class for you. He is really boring, but if you do your homework and take notes you should be fine. Beware though, his TAs are harsh and find ways to take off points.
Terrible professor. Doesn't explain concepts well, wastes time by going super super slow, and tests on things he neither taught taught nor told the students to review. Avoid at all costs.
People on this site are making him out to be way worse than he actually is. The worse part of his class is his TAs because they live off of taking points off from tests and quizzes. I got a B+ in the class. I highly recommend doing all of his HW problems and learning through the book. He is super nice and really wants his students to learn!
I absolutely LOVED Jesus! I thought that he was a great teacher. He does have a bit of a thick accent, but despite the accent he teaches the material effectively and is available outside of class for his students. The only reason that I made a C+ in his class was because I overslept during an exam unfortunately.
I enjoyed his class. He is very clear about what he expects from you, and tries to be very clear about the specific material. He has a thick accent, but he makes a point to talk extra clearly and will even restart a sentence from the beginning if he decides to change a word. The tests were very straight forward with no surprises.
Very tough course if you've not taken Calculus before. He is a nice guy, but niceness doesn't mean you're a good teacher. If you are confident in your math abilities and willing to do a lot of work, then sign up.
Dr Rodriguez explains concepts at an excruciatingly slow pace backed up with little to no proof. Asking questions in class seldom leads to a useful answer.
He is a terrible teacher.... i failed his class. although he is a nice guy, you cannot understand a single word that he says. please take someone else for ma131.
You have to be on your 'A' game. You have to read your textbook. You HAVE to do your homework for every class. You have to ask questions. If you fail to do any of these things, good luck getting an acceptable grade.
Dr. Rodriguez is very difficult to understand. Also, if you ask a question in class he will either "come back to it later" and never come back to it, or use a really round-about way of answering it that makes no sense. Also, tests have no curves, but partial credit is given. He's a good guy - just not a great teacher. Do not recommend.
He's such a great teacher! I really enjoy math so I thought all the concepts were easy. He is always willing to help and is very nice about any question or concern you may have. He does have a thick accent, but it's not hard to understand what he is saying. He is also a really nice guy and I really enjoyed his class
Jesus is a really nice guy, excited to teach, and I bet he does great research because he's clearly really smart. But... His lectures can be tough to follow, his examples aren't very clear and you have to do a lot of the work on your own teaching yourself out of the book. Tests are difficult, and he doesn't give anything to study by.
Dr. Rodriguez is a very smart, nice man but he is not great at relaying concepts. He expects students to just understand everything and he skips a lot of tests. He makes this calc class much harder than it should be. It's doable, you just have to be willing to work hard and teach yourself. I do not recommend.
Lectures are useless because he will do one example in extreme depth to teach an entire topic. The problem session was better than all of his lectures. Do not take this class. I was being tutored by a student in a lower math class because they had 10X better notes from lectures.
Rodriguez is tough to understand (b/c of accent) and he doesn't teach the material well. Lectures are usually only examples & he makes simple errors that add to confusion. If you have no previous knowledge of calculus you will be lost with this professor from lack of good explanation, if you know calc and are retaking it after HS you will do fine.
I was always okay at math in High School, I never took Calc prior to this class. Taking this class made me much more confident at math and I thought it was really easy. I never missed a class but didn't do too much homework. I never got a grade below an A+ and I thought the class was very easy.
Dr. Rodriguez is a wise professor. You can tell that he loves Calc but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take my advice when I say DO NOT take his class. He doesn't let you use a calculator on tests or quizzes, he assigns way too much homework, and he seldom answers your questions when you ask him to explain something. If you refuse to take my advice, good luck
Rodriguez is an extremely nice and funny professor. However, he is extremely unclear and provides only examples all class long. He answers any question that arises, but a lot of the time his answers are confusing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you haven't taken calculus before, you will struggle. If you know calculus, you should be ok.
He seems like he really knows calculus but he does not do a good job explaining. He makes a lot of mistakes in class and it often makes it even more confusing. Lectures a about 5 minutes of notes and then 45 minutes of watching him do examples. Very boring and doesn't help much. Honestly you could leave class after 10 minutes and be fine for tests.
He is without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. Not only is he wildly unhelpful IN class, he's blatantly disrespectful to students. Going to his office hours is even worse. He grades incredibly harshly, and grades unfairly between students (different points off for exactly the same mistake). Do NOT take a class with him EVER.
I dropped this class because of the unbelievable amount of stress it put me under. Dr. R doesn't explain, he gets frustrated and angry when you ask questions and never clarifies. He doesn't know how to relay what he knows in a way that's easy to understand. Please - do not take his class.
He is incredibly disrespectful to his students. Always open to questions, but answers them by yelling and clear frustration in his voice. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you've never seen calculus before. Attendance is not mandatory but less than 6 absences gets the lowest test dropped Does not follow syllabus or webassign. he does not use the text, do not buy.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He is very difficult to understand and does not explain concepts well. His tests only contain 6 or so questions and he is strict with partial. He takes forever to explain something in lecture which means you have to teach yourself. The TA I had was good and probably the only reason I did decent in the class. Do not take him.
Rodriguez is definitely a difficult professor, not because of the content, but because of how he teaches his classes. If you aren't good at teaching yourself material on your own, then don't take his class because thats all you do. He is not good at explaining material in class, and generally will just put himself into confusion.
I took Calc 1 in high school but had to take it again in college so if you are someone who has already taken this course in high school, you'll do great. HOWEVER, if you have never taken calc 1, do not take this professor, his lectures are confusing, and he is bad at explaining the material. Best of luck.
He's a really nice guy, and a funny professor, but the way he teaches makes it a class that you really need to self learn. His tests were extremely difficult, and it really took a lot of effort to pass.
He doesn't have any good lectures, and the day before a test, rather then reviewing material on the test that he most recently taught, he teaches us new stuff that isn't on the test. Not a good professor at all, 10/10 not recommended, he is smart but he can't teach well at all.
Dr. Rodriguez seems like a nice guy. He's hard to understand sometimes and I think he just makes things more complicated than what it needs to be. Im definitely not a math person at all, but even going to his office hours to get him to clarify doesn't help. Definitely don't ask a question in class either, he tends to get himself confused.
All of Rodriguez haters are people who just suck at math. Hes one of the best professors Ive ever had and really makes things so clear.
Dr. Rodriguez is very hard to understand in lecture because he rewords his sentences and confuses himself and in return confuses his students. If you ask a simple question he has to go all the way back to the beginning and try and explain it which is annoying because it takes away valuable class time and he was late to class almost everytime.
He knows his calculus, but not how to teach it. He rarely can answer questions efficiently in class (either he won't understand you or you won't understand him). Basically you need to learn from the textbook and then use his lecture as review. Use your TA hours from the get-go. Even though all homework isn't graded, do it. You can get by
Everyone is giving him really bad ratings, but I didn't think he was bad at all. He basically lectures every day and then gives you textbook hw based off of it, but it isn't due. Definitely do it though bc it'll help soo much. You also get a few short webassigns due before each test. If u ask questions, he'll explain everything to u.
I had never taken a calculus course before, so this review is not coming from someone who is great at math. Overall, he was not a bad professor at all. Sometimes he does mess up his words but he always goes back and corrects it. As long as you pay attention in class, you will be fine. The exams were very fair.
He is very hard to understand, and doesn't do a very good job explaining calculus concepts. I would recommend taking his class if you took calculus in high school, but as someone who didn't, I didn't find the class very helpful when trying to understand calculus for the first time.
The lecture was pretty much useless, must teach self outside of class. Use your TA's usually they teach better.
Dr. Rodriguez did not teach me calculus. He refreshed my memory of what I learned in college. He took too much time and was too thorough in the beginning, then sped through the last half of the year which made it difficult to learn the harder material. I don't recommend this class, but it could have been so much worse.
This class is definitely much easier for those that have taken Calculus before. However, he explains everything very well and cares about making sure all students understand the material. He sometimes goes too much into depth, making it confusing, but as long as you focus on the material you need to know, it is a pretty easy class.
Rodriguez is a nice guy, but if you did not take calculus in high school and grasped the material then, then good luck grasping the material in his class. He does not do a good job explaining concepts. He dropped the lowest test grade if you did not miss more than 6 classes.
A funny guy but an absolutely TERRIBLE teacher. He is not good at explaining any of the concepts and he makes the test questions 100x harder than anything he does in class or in the textbook. Expect weekly quizzes. I had a weekly tutor for this class that met with me two times a week thankfully because I would not have passed otherwise. DON'T TAKE.
He would just kind of ramble on and not teach very well in his lectures. I learned basically everything in the class from the TA outside of lecture. When I did go to his office hours, he did not seem very interested in my questions at all and did not explain the answers so much as just the concepts which did not help me very much.
Rodriguez is outdated and uses old techniques to do calculus. I took honors calc in high school, so i thought I would have an easy time with this class. He uses a method that hasn't been taught since the 1800's and I got every question right on my first and second test but because I didnt use his method i got a 45 and a 50 on them, respectively.
If you have the option to take a class with any other professor, DO IT. Dr. Rodriguez is a very smart man who knows the subjects well, but does not teach at all. He is extremely hard to understand, skips over steps, and doesnt explain anything.
I liked the professor as a person and I believe he tries his best to be a good teacher but he is far from it. I had to get a lot of tutoring and help from my friends to even do fine in the class. He is not generous with the partial credit either. I got a question completely wrong just because the numerical answer was wrong; I did the work CORRECT!
Rodriguez is a fairly decent professor. Funny during class, can be a little hard to understand, and does skip over some steps. Great at answering questions. My TA really helped. No calculator allowed, but partial credit is given. Webassign homework and some suggested textbook problems that are not checked. Drops the lowest test grade too.
He means well and wants his students to do well but his accent and teaching methods aren't always the best. My TA is the only reason I understand what I'm doing. The textbook homework is never graded but I'm sure it helps to actually do it. The tests are straight forward and aren't that bad.
He is a really nice guy and tries to be a good professor but he does not explain thing well and skips over major steps in problems. Hard to understand his accent and has sloppy handwriting that makes taking notes even harder. Lectures are just so confusing.
Confuses himself a lot, does A LOT of examples, not a tough grader
Expects you to read the material and be familiar with it before class. However, his lectures mainly consist of example problems, so if you can follow along you will be fine. He does skip steps and often gets confused if you ask a question, but he does his best to make sure everything is explained to you. Webassigns are not well related to the test.
If you struggle with math do not take Dr. Rodriguez. He is quite hard to understand and he doesn't really teach per say, just goes over example problems. They are pretty strict on attendance, but you really do need to be there everyday to understand what's going on. Be warned: no calculators allowed.
Test heavy, would be condescending to students asking questions in class. No calculators on test, which shouldn't be a big deal but he chose difficult to compute numbers and I was often struggling to finish the test on time, and would struggle to finish easy computation heavy problems. Don't take if first time taking calc/not able to teach self
My impression of Dr. Rodriguez is that he's a pretty intelligent guy. He knows his stuff. However, he is pretty bad at teaching it to other people. He gets confused so easily. He doesn't understand people's questions. I don't think I would take him if I had the chance to change. Oh well.
Dr. Rodriguez probably should have stopped teaching awhile ago. He writes out the examples on the board without explaining them, and expects you to know what he's going to say next even if you don't have prior calc experience. My TA is the only reason I'm passing. I don't recommend writing in pen, because he changes every other thing he writes.
Tests are short, easy, and are just like the examples done in class. Lectures are boring, redundant, and consists of examples. If you can follow the examples he does in class, you won't struggle. One question quizzes that are also exactly like examples done in class. Overall a fairly easy class.
Dr. Rodriquez does a ton of examples and strives to make sure that every student understands the material. If you do the homework from the textbook and put in the work, you can easily pull off an A. Don't be discouraged if you haven't taken Calculus in high school because I only went up to pre calc and I'm doing fine.
He's okay, TA saved me. If you study out of class youll be fine.
Dr. Rodriguez is okay at explaining the concepts and the examples he does are fine. You should probably do the homework if you wanna get an A in the class. The TA's are more helpful though, so definitely go to recitation! If you have to take his class, you will be fine. But it would be best to find a different professor.
Dr. Rodriguez tries to be a good professor and I like him as a person but his teaching style isn't the best. Lectures can be repetitive and confusing. They are example driven so often times the underlying concept is misunderstood. Be prepared to teach yourself! Tests tend to be difficult but the quizzes were easy.
I have never taken a calc class and boy was this a partial mistake. he does not actually explain anything. Look up past tests online and practice those. The actual tests are pretty much the same thing, didnt figure that out till halfway through the semester. Oh well. Anyway hes so confusing and you learn everything outside of class.
There's four tests and if you have less than 6 absences he'll drop your lowest test grade so that's awesome. Go to your TA ASAP if you're having trouble. Tests are very hard and lectures will be 4 example problems drawn out the whole class so good luck not falling asleep, it's unnecessarily repetitive. He is not the best but probably not the worst.
No graded homework, which is a blessing and a curse. He does assign homework, which is helpful for studying before an exam. His lectures are alright, sometimes boring, but it's a math class what are you gonna do. His tests seemed fair and you can argue for additional credit on tests if you want.
English is not his first language so he makes very sure to be clear and that he understands what you are asking. He does make a lot of mistakes but if you call him out he always laughs about it. He cares how well you do and is very receptive to students. READ THE BOOK AND DO THE HOMEWORK and you'll do fine. Tests are not too bad. Great class.
Terrible teacher, grades harshly, no calculator allowed. I have always been good in my math classes but barely got a C in this class. Avoid this class.
I am typically very good at math but I was forced to drop this class because I had absolutely no clue what was going on. Dr. Rodriguez is very nice and seems like a great person, but overall the lectures were super confusing and were only taught using examples. No calculators and a ton of confusing homework that was never checked. Avoid this class!
The lectures are long, boring, confusing, and all he does is examples. He moves quickly and the homework he grades does not match the test. He also assigns problems in the textbook but does not grade them. His test are max 8 questions and hard. He seems like a nice guy but I would not recommend taking him.
Honestly one of the worst professors ever. You probably learn 2/3rds of the thing outside of class and when you take the test it is different from the homework and practice tests. He also quickly goes through examples even when we ask him to slow down. His explanations make no sense and he makes tons of confusing mistakes in class. Don't take this.
Very very bad teacher. He might seem nice at first but he has no sympathy for his students and does not make the tests anything like he teaches in class. His practice problems skip through so much of the work and he does not drop or curve any tests. Would never recommend this teacher.
Tests do not line up at all with material learned. Not super accessible in office hours - have seen many students cry after leaving. Harsh.
This is once of the worst professors I have ever dealt with. The tests are nothing like the material covered in class or in the assigned homework. You aren't allowed to use a calculator on a MATH TEST. He teaches using only examples and the only notes are complex definitions straight from the book. Highly recommend never taking this class with him.
if you're not great at math DO NOT TAKE RODRIGUEZ. Expects a lot from a class that isn't for math majors. Assigns a LOT of hw and if you get behind you're gonna get real lost real fast. He's not a compassionate or understanding professor. If you miss something or forget something it's tough luck. Don't take him if you need a good/easy math grade.
Professor Rodriguez is not the best math teacher. He uses examples to explain as opposed to showing formulas and how to get from one step to another. The tests do not correlate with what is gone over in class. Try to stay away from this class.
Taking this class was a mistake. Avoid Professor Rodriguez at all costs. He is so difficult to understand due to his accent and broken english, PLUS he is awful at explaining basic calculus concepts. He doesn't understand genuine questions that students will ask him about the problems he does in class. He makes so many mistakes when doing examples.
This class was supposed to be an easy introductory math class but it is the hardest class I have taken due to the lack of teaching from an actual professor, not even a TA. He teaches only using examples, doesnt answer questions, and his tests have nothing to do with any homework or assignments he gives. If you value your GPA, dont take this class
Honestly bad is an understatement. Dr. Rodriguez shows up to class one minute before it starts, spends five minutes trying to figure out what to teach, and rambles for an hour and 15 minutes. If you are looking to do well, or to understand anything in math, then I would keep looking.
If you took calc/AP Calc in high school and understood it than you should be fine for this class. If not, Dr. Rodriguez is prob not the professor for you. I took AP Calc senior year and had a great teacher who allowed me to learn/understand it all, which is why I understood it while taking MA121. Study practice tests AND notes and you will be fine!
He posts absolutely nothing online. His moodle is empty, he emails a one paragraph syllabus, and important info like test dates and hw are given in class. Lectures are bad so this will be the only reason you come to class
Very clear on what will be on the tests, if you do the homework problems the test will be easy as he himself says he takes problems from the homework. Have to come to class as nothing is posted online. Teaches through examples which was helpful for me. As long as you have a clue on how to do calc youll be fine. Can get a bit boring at times though.
He is the worst most disrespectful professor Ive ever witnessed. Dont even bother going to his office hours, he will make you feel worthless
Dr. Rodriguez does NOT curve tests. One day, he ran out of time to teach a concept, so he had us learn it ourselves, which is odd when you're paying tuition to be TAUGHT a concept. His tests were tricky, he gave a lot of homework, and he didn't understand class questions. He did simple examples, rather than tricky ones. I should have dropped.
I don't feel that Dr. Rodriquez did a great job teaching this class. Everyone that I knew in the class had to teach themselves the information as class didn't help. Near the end of the semester, we were learning things that were far more advanced than we were supposed to be studying. I would only take him if he's the last option.
(MA 121) "No calculatas" he wrote on the first day of class. DO NOT take any math class with him. I'm good at math and had already taken calculus in high school but this guy still somehow managed to confuse me. You teach yourself everything. An A is nearly impossible in his class. do not take him no matter the circumstances!!!
This one is a real hidden gem. I love his teaching style! This is how he teaches, he first outlines what the problem is, then in no unclear terms he tells us what he means when he says give me the solution to this problem. After this he then does anywhere from 2 to 5 examples of varying difficulty that cover almost all of the stuff you could face
The entire grade is 3 exams and the final. No hw, but he does give out practice problems in class. (He doesn't post online.) GO TO CLASS -- he does special problems that aren't in the book but are on the test. You'll probably end up teaching yourself anyway though. Also, he has an accent and doesn't use a microphone.
Dr. Rodriquez is a great professor. Some people think his accent is hard to understand, but he repeats himself if needed. He does not take attendance, but you should go to class. If you can do the homework you will do just fine on the test. He does not grade the homework, but it is great test preparation.
If you are good at math and lazy, he's the professor for you. Your grade is only 3 exams and a final. He doesn't take attendance, but you should go to class. He gives out hw questions from the book and it's optional. Do them. Read the section he's going to cover before coming to class and you should be fine.
Expect to teach yourself from the textbook for the whole class. Inaccessible outside of class and so hard to understand that I stopped going to lectures. The only upside is homework is not for a grade.
Expect to teach yourself everything for this course and to not have any communication with the professor directly. Yes, the recorded lectures are good, but they are not his, they are Kurtzs and she is a great professor. But he does nothing for anyone.
Graded on 3 tests & final only. No webassigns. He doesn't teach at all but provides us with Leslie Kurtz's lecture videos. Easy class, we just have to watch 2 videos a week. You're basically getting Kurtz if you have him online but I'm not complaining because she's an amazing teacher. Tests aren't too hard. He gives recommended problems in textbook
Lectures from another teacher entirely. Never spoke with him once. You arent allowed to use calculators on the tests after learning how to do the work in the lectures with a calculator. Made no sense and harshly graded my tests. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DONT LIKE MATH OR IF YOU DONT HAVE TO.
This class wasn't too hard since it was online but honestly, don't take calc with this guy. Never had contact with the man once. Lectures were all recorded 4 years ago by an entirely different professor. All the lectures would show you how to solve problems with a calculator yet calculators weren't allowed on tests.
He was very disconnected during my online class. He doesn't allow extensions and doesn't offer extra credit. He isn't understanding of the pandemic circumstances and just tells you to work harder instead of being nice and allowing for mistakes to happen. He doesn't respond to emails and I actually had to talk to the department head.
Had him online, super easy. Tests were open for 12 hours and open note/book. He always offered office hours and help if needed. No homework required. He doesn't make his class hard and it seems like he just wants you to learn the concepts and move on.
He did not answer a 99% of our emails and when he did they were only a few words. He also did not grade or lecture, as we watched prerecorded lectures from someone else. Wouldnt be suprised if he didnt exist. Not sure why anyone would take his course because we all had to learn from youtube
There is so much homework for this class and he is horrible at explaining, so get ready to not understand anything if you take his class. By far the worst math teacher I have ever had.
Literally never take this class, this man ruined enjoying math for me, you wont be able to understand his lectures, very unclear on what is going to be on the test, the only grades you have in this class are the tests and around 6-8 web-assigns per unit, text book is a little helpful but almost as confusing as his lectures.
He does not respond to emails, he does not help with test prep, and also only grades 10 small homework assignments, 3 tests, and a final. So if you're like me and fail one you're barely going to pass. Don't take this class with him.
Awful. Lectures make no sense; he can barely form a sentence without pausing. Not to mention that he physically can't answer questions asked. Super inconsiderate. He'd find a way to complicate 2+2. Only things graded are four exams and webassign work; he doesn't even teach the hw problems on webassign. Avoid at all costs possible, believe me.
Professor Rodriguez makes this class feel impossible. As other students have mentioned, the only grades in this class are tests (which are only 5 questions by the way, and not multiple choice), and homework. None of the material taught in lectures makes any sense, and I've had to heavily rely on youtube this whole semester. 10/10 do not recommend.
Rodriguez is one of the worst professors that I've had. I'm not good at calculus, but he did nothing to help me learn. His lectures are confusing, unplanned and he doesn't allow calculators on tests. this isn't a problem, except that he gives no guides to be able to know that we are solving the problem correctly with no calc. 0/10 don't take ever
Mr. Rodriguez might quite literally be the worst professor I've had. He's extremely unorganized and never answers questions in class. Instead, he'll just tell you to "watch" as opposed to explaining what's going on. He grades off the basis of 3 heavily weighted in-class tests ( which are only 5 open-ended questions), the final and WebAssign. AVOID!
I agree with what everybody else is saying on here. His lectures are horrible and confusing. He comes with nothing prepared, works one example, which he usually does incorrectly, and scribbles out the entire problem and wastes 20 minutes of class doing it. Final grade is 4 tests (each with only 5 questions) plus homework. Avoid him at all costs!
He's very confusing and doesn't seem to know how to articulate his thoughts whatsoever. Also maybe it's not that big of a deal but he wastes SO MUCH PAPER. He will use an entire sheet of printer paper for a single sentence and if he messes up one word or just doesn't like the way he wrote it he will throw the entire paper away and use a new sheet.
Took his class freshman year and thought it would be fine because his lectures were clear. However, the exams are much more difficult and the web assigns are horrible. Need to retake. DONT TAKE!
The worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are very unclear, unorganized, and overall not helpful what so ever. I have learned nothing from him and have relied strictly on the TA problem sessions and teaching myself. AVOID THIS CLASS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! Will NEVER take hime again.
Lectures will confuse you because of his constant backtracking and the fact that we will go through a whole page of notes for him to say something along the lines of, "wait let me go back". Khan Academy is the only thing that has gotten me through the semester, I wished I used it earlier. Do not take
He's really not as bad as everyone is making him out to be. You definitely have to be prepared to put in the work and read the textbook though
had to drop the class because he only teaches with examples and sucks. you have to teach yourself everything he "teaches" in class and the homework took HOURS yet had nothing to do with the exam. if you get a failing test grade, good luck getting a passing grade in the class.
Very test heavy
Drop this class while you still can. Final grade consists of the 3 tests, final, and webassign. Gives no extra credit and does not replace lowest test grade or throw any grades out. Lectures are extremely confusing with tricky, short tests. The test averages were around 55s and still would not curve. This class gave me mental illness.
He ever answers questions. Never responds to emails. Take with literally anyone else and you will learn more.
Dr. Rodriguez seems like he doesn't want his students to pass. He's very rude when you visit his office hours for help, and refuses to even help with homework questions. The TA taught us everything. Avoid him if you can because he also doesn't curve anything. I took AP Calc in HS and still struggled to learn from him.
Because I had taken ap calc ab in hs, his class wasn't so bad for me. But, his teaching is confusing IMO and relied on the TA during problem sessions to explain. His grade is 60% of the 3 tests you take throughout the semester, so if you fail one of those it's pretty hard to come back from that. All in all, if you don't enjoy teaching urself.
Possibly the worst professor Ive ever had. His lectures are confusing and hard to follow, his grading makes no sense, and he never responds to emails. Take with anyone else
Rodriguez just does not put in the effort you would expect from a professor at an institution such as state. The lectures were really confusing and at times made me question my own ability to learn. Even the recorded lectures did not help me. The other reviews (imo) are valid. I should not be paying thousands to teach myself.
Worst prof at NCSU. Never went to class. My advice for future students: get a hardcopy textbook and teach yourself! I would have done better if I did this from the beginning. Hard to understand, unclear, and honestly couldn't care less about actually teaching. Pathetic that he is still employed by such a good university, shame.
If youre good at math and understand it then take him. Test are 4-5 questions and final exam was around 11 questions. Its hard when youre not good at math and he doesnt try and help. If it wasnt for the TA we would all be lost. I come out of class more confused than when i walked in.
He never really answers questions, even though many are asked. He also only teaches with examples and does the work for us so no one actually learns anything during lectures. The TA taught me significantly more than the professor.
This class is the hardest class I have ever taken. I went to EVERY office hour available, never missed a class, was engaged, and even went to the Academic success center for tutoring. Still failed. His lecture method is impossible to follow along with. Highly advise any other teacher.
All he does is examples that are not like the test every single class. All of his tests are from the book and he gives no partial credit. The homework due dates don't correlate with what he is teaching. So you could be doing homework on one chapter when he hasn't even touched on it.
This class is awful. He is so rude and definitely the worst professor I have ever had. He doesnt round grades up. I had a 79.7 and he wouldnt round up to an 80. Do not take this class.
Impossible, please take any other teacher available.
Take a different teacher if possible, I watched or went to all the lectures and went to tutoring and it didn't help. He wouldn't answer your questions and didn't go over examples very well. Not a very friendly or helpful professor. Worst professor/ teacher I have ever had.
He did not like to answer questions in class and did not answer emails in a timely manner. He knew his stuff, but he didn't teach it well. :( He was the only teacher available so I have to take him again.
The only thing I liked was that the test were pretty easy and similar to his examples he gave in class. He talks about definition about math which is useless. I had a great TA and thats the only reason why I passed. Just don't over think on the test bc it's very straight forward. Choose another teacher if you can but if not then he isn't that bad.
Dr. Rodriguez did an excellent job explaining mathematical concepts in class in a manner that I could understand. His homework assignments and tests were challenging but reasonable for those who studied the material. I got a D in his class because I simply forgot some equations and ran out of time to study since I took other challenging classes.
The worst professor I have ever had. You will be more confused when you leave his lecture. He uses the entire class period to go over 2 problems. Do not take this class if you can help it.
I was in this class until right after exam 2 when he basically forced me to drop the class or receive an F after I missed the second exam because i had a family emergency (with proof, doctors notes etc.) He essentially told me he didn't care and then compared it to missing the exam to go on a vacation and how that wouldn't be allowed. So rude.
He is an okay professor but he loves to stick with the definitions of math. Refrain from asking questions during class because he comes VERY flustered. You also cannot use a calculator on the test/final but the test are very straightforward and doable. Also, if you have a question ask your TA because his response to emails is very slow.
My whole class has to retake MA 131. All he does is do 2 examples of a type of problem and that is it. Going to class is a waste of time. Do not take if you aren't good at math or can't learn from YouTube.
Horrible! Honestly I have given up on this class. Lectures are hard to understand, and he does not explain well, he knows it but can't show you how to do it. Everyone I know is failing this class, and I am going to have to grade exclude it. Unless you want to go tutoring everyday and still struggle, take it with a dif prof or not at NCSU.
Do yourself a favor and take this class at a community college. You shouldn't have to teach yourself calculus. I took AP Calc and I can't imagine learning calc for the first time from him because no one in his class actually learns the concepts of calculus, only memorizes things for the test because he isn't actually teaching for students to learn.
Just don't take him, I think the other reviews tell you how he is, but I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, not even people I hate.
I wouldn't wish this mf on my worst enemy. Can't teach, rude, and doesn't answer your questions if you ask them. Taught myself and that's the only reason why I did fine. Did not go to a single class unless there was an exam. Oh and a bonus is he takes time out of your 50 mins to take the test to teach you new material thats on it!
I failed this class last semester after taking AP calculus in high school and still made a D+. Currently retaking it and passing beautifully because the tests are identical from both semesters. There are 3 tests, 1 final, and a cumulative homework grade. Each of these are 20% of your grade so if you do bad on 1 thing you cant make higher than a 90.
Lacks instruction in classroom, tells you read text book - can require extensive help, never responds to emails, Test heavy - test are less than 10 questions DONT MESS UP. Nice person poor professor
Took him because he was my only option. Very confusing lectures, homework was unhelpful and all due on the same day, calculators not allowed on exams. The exams were easy in theory but we were never prepared for them. I don't know anyone who did well in this class.
All I can say is Jesus was not my savior. For real though do not take this class unless you want to violently struggle. The class was unbearable and most people failed or withdrew and have to retake the class.
He was my only option to take last semester. Although he was very sincere and asked us multiple times throughout the lectures if he needed to review anything, his explanations were not that helpful, and I relied on myself to learn the material more than his lectures. I would recommend taking another professor.
Worse teacher I have had in my entire school career. Just trust me do not take him.
Jesus can't even speak correctly. None of his lectures were helpful and I honestly learned more by doing nothing.
Professor Rodriguez is a very bad professor and he cannot teach. He is not accessible outside of class, he refuses to discuss Webassign homework problems and practice problems from the textbooks. TAs are not allowed to discuss this either. His teaching is all over the place and he fails to get the concept across. No calculators allowed on exams.
Don't take MA131 with Rodriguez. There's so many bad things about taking this class. If your only option is to take this class in the upcoming semester, it's better to hold off on taking the class, and take it the following semester with a different professor.
Professor Rodriguez is not the best in his teaching style and it isn't easy to understand what he is teaching. This class will require you to utilize the textbook, watch additional videos, teach yourself, and go to tutoring and office hours if you're struggling. If you put in the effort to teach yourself, you will do well!
I ended up taking this professor because I had no other option and ended up having to drop halfway through the semester after failing one test and being unable to bring my grade back up. Take any professor that you can that is not Jesus.
I am actually serious when I say that the day I picked Jesus as my calculus teacher I doomed my college career. If you wanna be amused then sure take his class he's lowkey funny BUT keep in mind this class has been the bane of my existence. NO calculator, NO curve, & NO knowledge of what my grade is (not that it matters because I am 100% failing).
I took AP Calculus in high school and still couldn't understand what Dr. Rodriguez was teaching most of the time. He was incredibly bad at explaining concepts, did not answer/understand questions asked in class, and there was no room for improvement if you made a bad grade on just 1 of the tests. Don't take this class!
This was the worst math class I've ever taken. You don't learn anything from his lectures and spend most of your time teaching yourself with practice problems from the book. Your grade depends on 3 tests between 5-7 questions. (very hard to pass since 1 question can be 30/100 points) I would not recommend taking this course with Prof. Rodriguez.
This is literally the worst professor at NC State. When I chose this professor, I didn't listen to the other rate my professor reviews. LISTEN TO THEM. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I would avoid this class at all costs. Professor Rodriguez is clearly passionate about math, but that is the only positive aspect of his character. His lectures never helped me understand the material, so my time was mostly spent trying to teach myself from the textbook. Tests are short and difficult. Please, find a different professor.
His lectures are not that great, which makes you to teach yourself which sucks. There are only 3 unit tests which each are 20% of your grade and as well as the final, which makes it where if you fail one test it can be hard to bring your grade back up. Please avoid this teacher if you are able to, but good luck if you have to take him.
Whatever you do. Do not take his class. Going to the lectures is not helpful at. all. He will take an entire class period to ramble about a question that makes zero sense. If you miss a test you have to wait till the end of the semester for retakes. Only 3 tests that are EXTREMELY hard (only 5-7 questions). I promise u will have to teach yourself.
Jesus Rodriquez really is a good person, yet is the worst teacher I have ever had. When you view his gradient, he has more people making an F in this course than any other grade combined. That speaks volumes. And its speaks volumes that this university allows him to teach here. He is okay with you failing, and has been every semester.
DO NOT TAKE! I took AP Calc in high school and did completely fine yet am barely going to pass. Refer to NCSU Gradient, he has more people failing than even passing his course yet changes nothing about his grading or teaching style. Cannot believe he teaches here just because he is a "researcher."
Refer to NCSU Gradient and never take his class. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE. He is strictly here for research, you will regret taking his course.
DO NOT TAKE.
If he is your only option, just wait a semester. Trust me, it's bad.
Terrible. Over half the class makes an F or withdrawals.
Don't listen to other people! Professor Rodriguez is an amazing teacher who always ensures that students understand the material before proceeding to the next topic, it is not his fault if no one is asking questions even though he is willing to clarify your doubts. If you put in the effort and do the practice problems, this class is a breeze.
Just do the practice problems and attend class! I haven't taken calc before but this class was pretty easy, and the tests are easy IF YOU ACTUALLY STUDY and do the practice problems Professor Rodriguez assigns! If you have a doubt, go to office hours! He is not bad at all and actually cares about students understanding the topic.
PLEASE avoid this professor at all costs. His lectures are not helpful at all, as he does not explain anything. If you have NOT previously taken calc, it will be extremely difficult. The grade is composed of three tests, the final, and a homework average, so if you mess up on one thing you are done for. Also not understanding or caring at all.
I would take this class with ANYONE else. Lectures are very confusing, and it takes forever for him to just do one practice problem. If you haven't taken calculus before, do NOT start by taking it with him. I now hate calculus because of this man, and will most likely be taking calc at a community college over the summer.
As much as the other reviews say he's an awful teacher, I throughly enjoyed having Jesus as my professor. I failed calc in high school but ended up getting an A in the class. He goes really slow through the material which makes it way easier to understand. I would recommend reading the textbook as well if you want to do well on the exams.
Lectures are very hard to understand, he tries his best to explain things but is not actually very helpful. If you do not want to be rereading the textbook all the time, do not take this class.
Easy A if you study and do the practice problems assigned by the professor! Most of the people don't do the questions and blame the professor. However, trust me, if you are willing to put in the effort and actually pay attention in class, you will be absolutely fine. The same goes for any class. Also, the TA Jessie is amazing!
The TA's were more helpful than the actual professor. I probably would have been better off skipping class a lot of the time and teaching the material to myself either through the textbook or youtube. He doesn't go super fast, but he doesn't explain why he is doing what he is doing, so it is difficult to apply to other problems.
Professor goes at a pace which really helps you grasp the topics! Class was easy if you practice questions every week.
If you have not taken calc before, this will be a hard class. Definitely take the webassign seriously and do it early. There aren't many grades either so get a good grade on your webassign. Do the practice problems too! Other than that, you're probably gonna be fine. He's not the best teacher ever, but you can get through it with practice.
Professor Rodriguez does not have the most favorable teaching style but he is very clear about his grading criteria. Take his advice and actually do the practice problems from the textbook and you should succeed. Utilize office hours or the tutoring center if you're struggling. This class will require you to put in the time and work to do well.
The class goes by very quickly and does not cover everything. He will touch on the chapters of the textbook, but you will need to learn more of it on your own. He won't help with homework and will just say read chapters _ from the textbook at the end of each class. You can also find a version of the textbook online instead of buying a physical one.
Please do not take MA 131 with Rodriguez for your own sake. Terrible lectures, topics of homework is assigned at random, tests consist of 80% of your grade, and professor is not helpful inside or outside of lectures. He will refuse to answer questions you have about work. Most lectures consist of him forgetting what he is already taught.
To do well in this class, you need to have a good understanding of calc. His teaching style is not good and he struggles to teach a lecture. The tests are hard and he doesn't give practice. His homework has material that he said we did not need to know which makes the homework hard. Hope you get a good TA because they will maybe save your grade.
This was the most confusing course I've ever taken. I had a lot of trouble understanding what he was trying to say and he gave very poor explanations of how to complete problems. Grades with 3 tests, a final, and a general home work grade. Each of these is 20% of the final grade. Do not take class, but if you must go to tutoring EARLY AND OFTEN.
Taking time to do the practice problems he provides is extremely helpful. Many of the questions were similar to test questions and problems he did in class. I also recommend doing the homework for each topic the day you talk about it in class as it is helpful in reinforcing the information learned in class.
The lectures themselves aren't bad, but he struggles understand people's questions and rarely answers effectively. Reading the textbook isn't necessarily important, but doing the practice problems absolutely is. I would only take this class if you feel confident in your math skills and are willing to do a good deal of independent work.
I advise any and all students, no matter how strong your math skills are, to NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS. Please listen to me when I say its not worth it. Take Calc 1 at a community college and transfer the grade over. Calc 1 should not be this hard. But, if you have to take this class, go to your TA's office hours and honestly forget going to lecture.
Don't take him. Rodriguez is not the best at helping students. Though he taught everything correctly he was disorganized and does not know how to use Moodle. No notes or recordings are ever posted, the textbook is filled with errors, and if you need help on homework neither he nor the TAs will help. Be prepared to teach yourself if you have him.
He is not that understanding and he doesn't give extension for homework and his lecture are hardly understood so you better have some background in calculus. the worst thing were the exams, they weren't hard as much as they were very limited question so if you get one question wrong you lose like 20 points or something.
This professor was absolutely awful. Was a horrible communicator and was not an effective educator. He graded on tests and homework only. He would not help with the homework at all, even though many things present were things we hadn't learned in class. The tests were also only 7-11 questions, so if you got more than 1 or 2 wrong you were screwed.
The tests were much easier than webassign and very similar to optional practice problems he gave. The class itself isn't hard, but expect to do a lot of learning on your own. I would go to class and copy down everything he writes then watch a video on YT after class to understand it. He doesn't really explains problems in class he just does them.
The class moves very slow. At the end of the semester it felt like we only covered 5 topics which made studying for the final easy. The concepts aren't difficult but you will learn more in problem session than in lecture.
He is not a good professor, but if you have a good TA you can pass this class. I mainly went to lecture to get examples to practice with and asked my TA questions in recitation. My biggest piece of advice to people who have to take this class is to rely on TAs and practice problems in the textbook because tutoring at the ASC was super unhelpful.
Super hard to understand his way of teaching and the large lecture halls don't help.
worst professor i've ever had. I took him my first semester at school, and ended up failing and retaking it with him again to earn a B. Your grade consists of three tests a billion web assigns, and a final which has all kinds of random stuff on it. With that being said, if you do poorly on one test, might as well be prepared to fail the class.
His lectures were very boring and he was not the best at teaching the material. If you're good at math and go to TA office hours you should do fine. The tests are written with no calculators. I'd stay away from him if you can.
Do not take Rodriguez. In his class we were not allowed to ask questions about homework and I had to teach most of the content to myself. If you are not naturally gifted in math and it doesn't come easily to you, Rodriguez is not the professor for you. Long and boring lectures and grade is dependent on three tests and final exam. Do not recommend.
IF POSSIBLE DO NOT TAKE HIM. He won't help with the HW he assigns, it takes him an entire class period to get through 1 problem and then he scratches it out because he got it wrong. Also test are 5-7 questions so if you get one wrong your grade is screwed. Overall an awful teacher and does not care what grade you have. DO NOT TAKE.
He isn't for everyone... Dr. Rodriguez gives out hard tests with unclear grading criteria, however, he offers office hours 3 days a week and optional practice problems that mimic the questions you'll see on the tests (sometimes they're even the same exact ones). His class is a headache but he's overall a nice guy, you just have to put in the work.
This guy is not made for people who have never taken calculus before because he operates off of the assumption that you know the basics and he doesn't explain things clearly. Grades are mostly based on 3 50 min exams with 5-7 questions, but he doesn't let you use a calculator and they're much harder than what he teaches and gives as homework.
Definitely a hard course, this professor does okay at lecturing, but his style of teaching doesn't explain in the simplest way. Use the extra resources he provides, it has the same lectures by a different professor which is helpful if you don't understand a lecture. The tests are short, but just repeat the practice problems over and over again
He's a nice guy and will make you laugh during class but doesn't always explain the material in a way that makes sense! The material learned in class, what the textbook says, the homework assignments and the material on the tests are all completely different!
Rodriguez's lectures are extremely hard to understand. I took this class after previously taking AP Calc in high school and it was still hard to understand his explanations. The TA did his best. Without prior knowledge of calculus I probably would've failed this class. I would strongly recommend a different professor!
Don't take this class, the content is difficult and Rodriguez makes it even worse. TA's made many careless grading errors on exams. Rely on problem sessions because his lectures are not helpful at all, he tends to make mistakes on his own problems and is not clear on what he expects you to write on exams.
HW, Test 1-3, Final, each 20%, final replaces 1. Impossible to follow through lectures, and expects you to know things he literally teaches afterwards. TA's are hit or miss, usually hit though. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's the only place where you'll know the details needed to score well on tests (after learning everything individually).

I honestly don't know how I passed this class. My test scores were: 46, 79, 38. I went to every lecture and every problem session. I put in 50+ hours outside of class and STILL barely passed. He struggles to explain simple concepts and doesn't answer questions effectively. He also made many mistakes. The first day, he spelled "throw" as "through"
I dropped the first day, he was the teacher that finally made me drop engineering. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. He does not respect students at all. He refuses to do basic things like post an answer key to an exam to the Moodle page or show the median score for any exam. He presents the material in the most boring way imaginable. Any enjoyment I had for math is gone after taking his class. Stay far away.
He is honestly getting to old to teach and it shows during his lectures. He doesn't post anything on moodle, no notes, no class recordings, no test answers, no test grading criteria. You have to teach yourself all the material from the textbook.
Rodriguez does not know what he is doing anymore. Definition of senile. He stumbles over his words, writes the same things on the board over and over again, makes mistakes all the time. His lectures are useless. Combine that with harsh grading and no partial credit on exams and you have Jesus Rodriquez. I'm sure he was a decent teacher in the 60s.
The entire course grade is tests so one bad grade really hurts you. He can barely get through an example without making mistakes or giving drawn-out and poorly executed anecdotes. I had a formal excused test absence and he was still giving me a hard time about rescheduling my test. I think he even graded more harshly on that test because of it.
AVOIDS HIM AT ALL COSTS. hw is optional which means course grade depends 100% on exams and final. there are 3 midterms each weights 20% and a final weights 40%. he is not good in explanation and teaching, i barely understand the materials and always need to look up online or on the textbook.
primary evidence of dementia
Lectures are very hard to understand and learn the material. I just used the book and taught myself, but class overall was not very difficult. He reuses exams from previous years, so look in the test bank. Do the HW problems he assigns because they will be the test problems. Not the worst differential professor you could have.
3 tests and a final. Thats it. He assigns ungraded homework from the textbook, doesn't post test answers, and gets confused during lecture. It's time for Jesus to retire, I'm surprised he made it up the stairs on the way to lecture every day. Listen to the reviews on this page, don't take him.
Terrible! Run for your life!
horrible. forget the math. he could barely speak english. he expects you to go to class, go home and study for the rest of the day to be successful. in other terms, you and him are both the imposter. someone reports a dead body and he immediately accuses you to save himself. you get ejected and have to watch the rest of the round in pure rage.
Professor can be challenging, but the extra resources like the supplementary lectures are super helpful. Attend class and use tools like unstuckstudy ai to stay on top of the material. Grind practice problems to ace the exams.
Doesn't post any lecture notes or any recordings. Handwrites the lectures during the lecture instead of before, so 50% of class is him writing stuff down. Has a habit of repeating a similar aspect of a problem over and over. One MAJOR issue is his inability to understand students questions. He turns y/n question into a lecture of him repeating stuf
Doesn't post lectures online, not sure why. Constantly contradicts himself in class and will explain a simple concept repeatedly. Makes mistakes while teaching and scribbles out entire parts of problems. Also teaches straight from the textbook, and doesn't understand any questions students ask in class. Would never take a class with him again.
This course is very stressful b/c your grade is only made up of 3 tests (20% each) and a final (40%). He frequently gets confused and repeats simple concepts over and over. and teaches exclusively from the textbook. The test questions are very closely related to the ungraded homework he assigns. Cannot answer student questions effectively.
DO NOT TAKE. Old snappy professor. Despite attending every class, I had to learn most of the material on my own. Homework was posted late, no practice exams, and minimal feedback. Poor use of technology and unresponsive to emails. Overall, very disappointing and disorganized. This class desperately needs either a new professor or major improvements
Did not understand basic questions, was disengaged and unhelpful. Materials were poorly explained, homework was often late, and no practice exams or feedback were provided. Communication was minimal, and he struggled with basic technology. I attended every class but still had to teach myself. Overall, the class felt disorganized and frustrating.
Worst professor I've ever had... You will not understand him while he is lecturing because he doesn't not enunciate his words. You don't really know whats going to be on the exams. Avoid him!!
RUN! Unless you want to crash out every 4 weeks when you have a test and teach yourself all of the material. He is old and angry, and he knows it. Save yourself and choose a different professor or a different math course. Even if you crawl out with an A in this course, it will take years off of your life. You will regret it. Run far far far away!
Convinced that this is the "weed out" prof at state, because your morals, will, and determination all get tested by him. scraped by because I did well on the homework, which there is a lot of. Can't understand him, he's rude, and the exams are 5-7 questions each and basically determine your grade. bad handwriting too. avoid at all costs. putrid.
He isnt necessarily a bad professor. The course has homework, which isn't for a grade. All graded items are exams. He is frequently very quiet and hard to hear. He is a bright personality and I could see him being a great researcher and mentor but he is boring to watch lecture. Do not write your notes in pen, he repeatedly messes up in class
You people are dramatic. The tests were straight out of the textbook or easier. As long as you have mastered the practice problems he assigns from the book, you will be more than prepared. This class also taught me the valuable skill of self-discipline when it came to staying on top of content.
Jesus Rodriguez has given me the lowest grade of my college career by an entire letter grade. The way the course is set up is not helpful to students and you will be learning complex math from the textbook. My lowest grade I've ever received before this was a B+. I'm on the way to med school with a high gpa. This is possibly the worst class at NCSU
Not cut out to be a professor anymore, maybe 20 years ago. He constantly stutters, makes mistakes through his lectures, and expects you to learn everything yourself. Lectures are basically just a brain dump for him and he leaves everything on you and expects you to figure everything out yourself. Gives practically no assistance in learning content.
His reviews here are accurate, but I will say that if you do the problems he gives you for homework (which is not mandatory nor graded) then you will do well on the tests. He is an awful lecturer, constantly making mistakes, and is relatively difficult to understand. I would recommend another professor, but he is not the worst I've had here.
I had him last year but this class was literally impossible. You can try to follow through with his lectures, but it wont get you anywhere. Only way to pass this class is if you use your resources wisely.
Easily the worst teacher I have ever had, late homework post and grade completely determined by test with 4-5 questions. Taught myself everything through the textbook. However, if you do the homework questions and understand exactly how to solve each HW question, then the tests are very easy and straightforward. Start studying very early.
Dr. Rodriguez isn't good at answering questions, but the lectures are on-topic and the homework will prepare you extremely well for the tests, which are much easier. Luckily, MA341 is less conceptually difficult relative to other high-level math courses. Even though the homework is optional (grade is 100% tests), do all of it and you will excel.
Literally only grades on tests. Very nice person to speak to, but horrible professor. He gets lost mid lecture and gets verryy reparative. Do not take this class if you are a bad test taker or if you like learning from the teacher as opposed to independent reading.
Good luck, youll need it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took AP Calc the year before this class and did well, so I thought I would be fine. Big mistake. Professor Rodriguez spends the whole class doing one problem that he does not explain, and half the time he does it wrong or forgets what he's doing. Half of the class dropped and the other half failed. Stay away at all costs.
Always late to class with no explanation, especially annoying if you have him at 8am..., grade is determined by 3 midterms and 1 final exam, NO CURVE, NO EXTRA CREDIT, NO CHEAT SHEET, 0 FEEDBACK. Need extra help? he tells you to read the textbook and says do the HW even though its not graded. if you do bad on the tests, you do bad in the class,
This dude will mumble on and on all lecture. He will make zero sense. The practice he assigns do not at all compare to what he puts on the tests. There are only 4 grades in the entire class: 3 tests, the Final Exam. He does not grade on a curve, when he severely needs to, and does not seem to even think twice about giving bad grades.
Only grades are tests, only hw is ungraded and directly out of the textbook and doesn`t correspond whatsoever to his tests, over half the class dropped or withdrew
he was alright at best. a lot of exams were repeat from previous years-wish i knew this earlier. Doesnt record lectures and is late frequently. 100% tests for your overall grade. not my first choice but also not my last choice
Don't know why everyone hates him- do all the HW, make sure you understand it, and the tests will be very easy. He's not great with explaining stuff but he teaches straight from the textbook, so just read if you're not getting it. Never got below a 95 on all 4 exams. Only graded by exams- HW is optional.
The professor himself, I hope he retires soon. He honestly seems nice, but going to class is not even real. Get previous years exams, they're so similar/exactly the same.
Know that his notes are barely readable, he does not curve no matter how bad the class does on the tests, his hw does not help what so ever, and the only way you'll understand the class is in recitation if you have a good ta. His lectures are good for notes only because it's directly off of the teachers text book.
Notes are hard to read, exams (which make up 80% of the grade) are not curved regardless of overall scores in the class for each exam. Lectures are difficult to follow as he goes into more detail than needed for each concept. Best bet for anyone taking this is to practice each major concept extensively on your own to understand it all.
the only reason i passed this class was because i took AP calc the year before. i actively UNlearned calculus with dr. rodriguez. your TA is your lifeline. there are 4 total grades in the gradebook: webassign, 3 exams and the final (worth the same as the other exams). if you have never taken calculus before, PLEASE bffs with the organic chem tutor.
He DOES NOT know how technology works so beware if you skip a lecture you won't know what you missed. I found the class fairly easy as long as you attend class and take notes, he has recommended textbook questions but I never did them except to prep for the final. Don't be too scared by all the bad ratings though, if you try you can do well.
