He reads off the PowerPoint (he just says he already talked about things and doesn't explain them). He is funny, but I don't know if he is hilarious. Lectures do not help and he insists that you read the book. He also refuses to upload his PowerPoints (offers a PP that "compliments' your reading) and he does not give enough time to take notes.
Expect to hear "Aaahhhh" every 5th word and hear annoying memes on powerpoints you can barely understand, oh and be ready to teach your self cuz according to him you already know everything or "yea i went over this already, yeah next slide"
Professor Velazquez is a poor instructor. Although this is his first quarter teaching, don't expect much. His lectures are rushed through, and he does not really teach. He is however, lenient about some aspects of his midterm design, but besides that, he is not a very good chemistry professor. Lectures will mostly serve as recaps for your reading.
Velasquez is one of those teachers who expect you to know everything and goes too fast on slides without even posting them online. He does not reply to emails and is not clear in his lectures. It also doesn't help that this is my first time taking a Chem class as well and had to teach myself almost everything. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Avoid Velazquez at ALL costs. The only way you will do well in his class is if you know every single piece of information he is going over. Goes too fast, is rude when asked questions, and his practice midterm in no way corresponds to the actual midterm. Take Enderle. I just saved your GPA. YOU ARE WELCOME. Velasquez makes you cry late at night.
Pros: Helpful when you come to him in a one on one setting. Fair about grading (added curve at students request) Willing to compromise (decided to post lecture slides) Cons: Lecture's go by quickly with little time to take meaningful notes Lots of "uhs" take up time during lecture The memes... Main Idea: If you put in effort you'll be fine
Jesus only reads off slides but gives you homework that have NOTHING to do with his lectures. His practice exam also don't correspond with his actual exams because he expects you to automatically understand his lectures. His teaching methods are really trash. If you take his class, be prepared to spend hours and hours in office hours and tutoring.
Lecture and discussion is a joke. All learning is done through weekly online assignments, which average at least three hours and can go up to 9 hours of work. Tells you to read the textbook (online, must pay for) but the book doesn't explain anything. Tests are completely different from practice exam, the final is extremely hard.
Actually the worst. Do not take him. If you do, you'll be teaching yourself everything.
be prepared to teach absolutely everything to yourself. Lectures and discussions are all over the place and are not useful. He goes too fast during lectures and won't post the slides on canvas for some odd reason. Online assignments were my way of learning in this class, even tho they took forever to complete. He did give a curve and some ec tho
This guy is a joke. Please don't take him. He's a cool guy and makes funny jokes sometimes. (THAT'S ALL). The lectures are 100+ slides and he is terrible at explaining. I learned everything from OWL and Enderlie's lectures. His "Extra Credit" (10%) is out of 10 pts, so he forces you to go to H.O. and discussion. Tests are not close practice.
Jesus Mojica Velasquez. Where do I start? He reads off powerpoint slides and goes way too fast. You need to self-study in order to understand what he's talking about. His 'extra credit' is not even extra credit, its 10% of your grade... Labs are 9%. I guess he tries to answer questions, but unhelpful.. Super lucky I had prior experience in Chem.
The grading is so crazy that it actually hurt your grade. I thought that I had an A in the class, but nope. Only after final did he fix the grading scale and I ended with a B. After entering in the "extra credit", which was worth a significant part of the grade, it made my grade drop down to a C. He gave more extra credit to those who went to OH.
Pros: The curve was pretty good. 51% was C. Cons: You don't learn anything.
I wouldn't recommend this professor at all; goes through the slides way too fast, won't post them until last minute, and midterms are hard and there is barely enough time to finish. The final is easy if you study hard enough. His "extra credit" will actually hurt your grade; had to teach myself everything through online assignments.
Avoid Professor Velazquez. His lecture slides aren't clear, he doesn't stick to the study guides for the midterms, and his extra credit is weighted as part of the grade. Technically, if you don't go, it ends up hurting your grade. I would've ended with an A- but the "extra credit" brought me down to a B- with the curve.
Although he has a positive spirit and is very responsive to students' demands, the teaching and grading were a mess!!! He would skip through slides and tell us to "just read this and you'll get it."Oh my word, who includes extra credit (graded out of 10 but maximum 5 was given) as part of the final grade. Either way, the curve bumped me up a lot.
Most people who did poorly in class didn't take his advice to do the textbook reading. He's a fine professor, great with answering questions. Very enthusiastic and knows what he's talking about. Makes all of his powerpoints available online, gave extra credit and gave a huuuuge curve.
Prof. Velasquez is easily the worst professor I have ever come across in my life. His lectures consist of meaningless slideshows that he just reads off of for the entirety of class time. He rarely knows the correct answer when students ask him questions regarding course material. I stopped going to lectures after midterm 1. Avoid him at all costs.
He's pretty good, definitely better than my last professor. I'm repeating the course, and have found his slideshows to be extremely helpful if I don't wanna go to class and need to know EXACTLY what we went over. Curve on exams is huge. Provides plenty of examples and step-by-step instructions. Practice midterms are very close to actual midterm.
I loved this professor. He really cares about his students, and it shows. He is very clear about what we need to know for the exams. I did not go to lecture and did good in the class. I felt the lectures were not useful, but the online practice was very helpful and so were the notes he posts. Wished he was teaching 2B.
He's very fast paced with his lectures, but he conveys the concepts very clearly.
He's new, so he's still learning how to teach but has definitely improved even within a single quarter. Velazquez really cares about his students and is open at office hours. Curve is godly. If you do practice tests (especially if you use Enderle's practice exams) you'll be set for the midterms.
Professor Velazquez is very passionate about chemistry and although his lectures are fast-paced, he uploads his slides online. He'll go to great lengths to make sure you understand concepts if you're struggling. He's also willing to listen to his student's requests (he had a review session on the Saturday before our final)
If you have the chance to take Velazquez, DO IT! on rate my professor his first time teaching he got poor reviews but trust me when I say he changed EVERYTHING about the way he teaches and manages the class. He is so caring and really loves his students and wants people to go to office hours! The curve is amazing and I am going to miss him so much
I love his personality but his lectures are just him reading off the slides. The first midterm was hard, second was easy and the final was fair. Do the OWL practice problems!!!! Nevertheless, he is super caring and motivational.
One of my favorite profs, He's inspirational, speaks very clearly, accommodating and very welcoming and helpful at office hours. I did feel slightly underprepared for the final though.
Professor Velazquez is an amazing professor and definitely one of my favorite! You can tell that he really cares about his students and wants them to do well in his class. He is always available after class and during office hours. The tests can be challenging , but they are fair. If you have the chance to TAKE HIM. You won't regret it!
He cares about teaching and tries to make you understand the material. He explains things very slowly, but changes the lecture slides so quickly that you can't keep up. He doesn't assign HW, so the only time you can practice the material is on the test! His tests are inconsistent in difficulty and the practice tests had lots of mistakes.
I was really scared when I took the class with him, but from what I heard he was the best out of all other professors who were teaching last quarter. He has a very generous curve and he is really passionate about what he teaches. He makes sure that everyone understands everything.
I thought he would be a nightmare based on the other reviews here but he's really not that bad. His lectures were okay but i feel like i mainly learned the material through OWL. 1st midterm sucked so he made the 2nd one super easy. Final was okay but the curve made up for it
Probably one of the best Professors I ever had!! He really cares about student success and makes sure you don't leave without understanding the material. The curve and test are fair. If you study well for the midterms and the final you should do well in the tests. His lectures are very detailed but they are meant to help you understand the material
Cares about his students. tries his best. I would recommend taking his class if you want to skip lectures. essay midterms and nice curve.
Good chem teacher to take if you don't like going to class. He's a cool guy and cracks jokes throughout his lectures and is probably who you should aim for if you can't get Enderle. He doesn't provide practice problems which can be annoying but uses OWL so you can go online and do practice problems.
I love this guy!! He is always clear about what you need to know for the tests and really cares about his students. The tests are fair and usually there's no surprises. He tries his best to keep lectures interesting by doing experiments and providing real world examples.
Very nice guy, really cares that his students do well. His lectures are a little too detailed sometimes, however he is just trying to get the most information out possible.
The best professor chem professor I have had! There were no surprises on exams. There is no homework assigned but I definitely recommend doing the OWL problems. This is not an easy class by any means but Dr. Velazquez has so much passion for students and teaching. He is incredibly encouraging and accessible in order to help his students succeed!
Velazquez was amazing in lecture, his slides are gold, and he does in-lecture experiments occasionally. He's good with answering in-class questions, and his practice tests are consistent. This was the only class he taught this year, and it was amazing. The TAs he chose are amazing, super helpful.
Dr. Velazquez is a decent lecturer, and his exams are very fair. Exams are very similar to the practice tests if not shorter. He tries his best to help students and is very encouraging. Every year he tries to improve as a professor, so I recommend taking his class!
Loved attending lectures. His practice exams and the resources provided aligned very well with the exams that were given. Great TAs and very enthusiastic. He has definitely improved from his first year for sure.
Dr. Velazquez is an excellent chem professor! He is such a caring and inspirational person who wants his students to do well. He posts lecture slides on canvas, holds review sessions, and gives practice exams that reflect the actual thing. Curve after midterms and final was thiccc. If you study hard, it's definitely possible to get an A.
He is honestly so understanding and super easy to talk too! This is the professor to take to pass CHEM 2A! His curves are GREAT! He does not give homework so one has time to actually practice the materials introduced in class, he's honestly the best professor so far
Would totally reccomend Dr. Velásquez! Hes super approachable, posts lecture slides, practice tests- which are actually relavent to the tests, review sessions and extended office hours, and you can see he genuinely cares about his students. Not to mention he curves very generously, something that really came in clutch for my grade winter quarter
Takes a long time to cover material but that is the only bad thing about him. Practice exams are just like exams, he's a great guy and this will be the easiest chem teacher you will ever have. Also no homework and nice curve.
Professor Velazquez genuinely cares about his students & does the absolute most to make sure you know about all the available resources that will help you better understand the material. Take advantage of office hours as a way to go over what was covered in lecture more in depth with examples before exams. Very understanding and amazing professor!
Amazing person and professor who is not only caring and wants his students to succeed, but does his best to actually make sure each and every person does. Posts lectures on canvas which was enough for me to study, so I didnt use the textbook. No HW, and OWL not mandatory. Grading curves were good. Lab of course depends on TA. Solid choice!
Velasquez genuinely wants all of his students to succeed. He gave amazing motivational speeches and was very clear in explaining things. The midterms and final didn't have any curveballs but make sure you do OWL and the practice tests to prepare for the exams.
Best Chemistry professor! Would love to take another class with him, he's super funny and real. Obviously chem is hard but he makes it bearable.
Best professor I have had at Davis thus far. Cares so much about the success of every single one of his students and shows it by his accessibility in and out of class. Only complaint about this professor is that he doesn't teach more throughout the year because more students deserve to have a prof as good as him!
Took Professor Velazquez Winter 2018, and he is honestly such a good professor. Lectures simplify the topics easy enough to understand, and uploads them. Very helpful if you can't make it to class or need to go back and relearn certain topics. Him uploading the lecture slides and his practice exams helped me pass the class. Definitely recommend.
IDK why people are being so mean when obviously you have to try in every class, IDK if they expected to be able to coast through a STEM class. Anyway, he is the most inspiring teacher who cares about his students and he goes a great pace and makes lecture engaging rather than being monotone and boring. He made chem fun.
Great professor - he clearly cares about his students and takes extra efforts to be accessible. Not the best lecture style - he basically reads out the slides he uploads. His midterms are relatively easy, and the curve was very generous! A solid choice overall, but not "WOW". I do hope he improves his lecture style - he'd be perfect otherwise!
LMAO his lectures were not very good but if you go to OH you'll be fine. Its true he really does care but he's pretty intimidating one-on-one. If you get a good TA-shout out Andy!-then it'll be fine. Class moves really quickly, stay on top of it and you should be alright!
When it comes to lectures... meh. Without my chem background knowledge and my great TA's help, I would probably have not gotten a good score in the course. He respects his students and is caring, and is helpful during office hours. I hope his lectures become more engaging.
Even if you hate chem, this guy is great. He REALLY cares about his students. When his lectures get boring, he re-engages the crowd with some fun demonstrations or inspirational speeches. In my opinion, his ideas are a lot clearer in office hours so if you can definitely go to those. Also do the OWL problems to prepare for his tests.
One of the best lecturers i've ever had. He really knows his stuff, and can explain all of the concepts in an easy to follow manner. I've struggled with chemistry in the past, and he helped me out with it. Tests can be a little challenging because there's lots of partial points that's easy to miss. curved class but it was small and didn't help me.
Good professor with good energy and cares about his students. Do all the mastery problems on the optional owl hw for each chapter learned, and watch videos on topics you don't get! His practice test are A LOT like the actual tests too. Class is easy if you put in a some work
Review from a person who thought wasnt good at chem: I love Dr. Velazquez. He is super kind and very motivational . The way he explains is really clear so I was about to understand most things. If you don't understand, he stops to give examples and clarify. If you needmotivation, he got you. Practice midterms SUPER SIMILAR to real midterms
I had a major life event during the quarter that almost caused me to dropout, but I didn't and was still able to pass his class. He sets clear standards and provides all kinds of resources to help you along. I was only able to make it to labs and 4 lectures total, but his clear examples etc was a lifeline. TAKE THIS GUY.
CHE002A is certainly not the easiest class you'll take, especially for those of us who aren't so chemically-inclined. However, it was clear the Velazquez cared deeply about the success of his students. Though there was no homework, I cannot stress enough how important it is to read the textbook.
Best chem teacher I've taken! I would honestly recommend taking him than Enderle. His lectures are well thought out, his grading is very fair and his curves are amazing. He was easy to approach to ask questions and his group of TA's were so great to! Honestly such a great class like I wish he taught the whole chem series or at least CHEM 2B.
Dr. Velazquez is really great. He brings in a lot of his own background (being Puerto Rican) to inspire other first-gen and minority students. His tests are very fair and PRACTICALLY IDENTICAL TO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. I cannot stress that enough. Although he does not give homework, he does upload practice questions in OWL. Overall, a great professor
Idk why the overall rating of this class is 3/5 when it should be higher! This was easily one of the best STEM classes I've ever taken. Be sure to look over the practice tests given because it's a good representation of the actual test. Dr. Velazquez is a very inspiring and caring professor and his lectures are very easy to follow as well.
TAKE HIM!!! ONE OF THE BEST STEM PROFS especially if you have little knowledge of chem! they start with the basics and the whole team (TAs etc) is amazing !! Best TA imo is estely!!
I had failed CHE 2A and decided to repeat with Velazquez. HE WAS THE BEST!! Tests replicate the exact practice tests, so do the practice tests! HIS CURVE WAS VERY GENEROUS IN THE END!! TAKE VELAZQUEZ!!
He was a very good professor, explained many concepts really well in his lectures, and if students were confused, he would retouch on the topics either in the next lecture or in a review session. His labs were reasonable work and I thoroughly enjoyed his teaching style. While the tests were hard, they were reasonably hard.
I'm so glad to have taken this class with Velazquez. He was a great teacher, and his TA staff was great too. His lectures were accessible, and there were plenty of resources if you needed help. I would highly recommend taking Chemistry with him if you can.
I love him! The best professor in CHE 2A. THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he is a gem! the material is hard but he has a lot of examples during class and during review sessions that are super helpful (and similar) for tests. Also do practice exams because they will prepare you for the actual exams!
He was a good choice as far as chem professors go. Very nice guy, though I could never pay attention to the lectures. I learned everything I needed to know for the exams from Owl, so I recommend using that to study. All in all, safe choice, good curve, not too much of a slog. (taken winter 2021)
Hes really sweet and cares a lot about his students future success. However, the class was so disorganized and there were concepts crammed at the end without any examples, making them really hard to follow. You have to go out of your way (OH and such) to understand anything in class. Exams were 24 hr take home, which definitely eased the burden.
Dr. Velazquez creates a welcome environment in class and has a clear goal in mind for exam questions when he is giving his lectures. Generally the practice exams have similar concepts as the exams itself, and the fact that a final replaces a lower grade for a midterm really helped out my grade. He seems to follow closely with the lecture slides.
While some topics towards the end were a little more challenging to understand, Dr. Velazquez went out of his way to help every student that needed the help. His understanding of inorganic chemistry comes across in his lectures as he had very clarifying answers to a broad range of questions.
What a beast of a professor. Between him and his TAs, he was able to provide copious amounts of extra material to study from. He was always available to meet and provide any feedback. Very responsive.
Best professor I have had at Davis ever and the first Professor I have written a review for. He is the GOAT and truly cares about his students. Never feel scared to reach out to him for help or guidance. He will always make time for his students and the tests are not hard at all if you do the practice tests. 10/10 would recommend for CHE 124a
Dr. V lectures are very clear and devotes all the time needed for students to comprehend the material. He is very supportive inside and outside of class! Would love to have him as an instructor again!
AVOID. He put things on exams we either never covered in class/lecture or much more challenging questions than ones we learned. He is not great at actually explaining concepts. Be ready to watch youtube, read the book, and try to teach yourself. Look at the practice exams and practice much harder versions of those questions to be prepared.
DON'T TAKE HIM. Lectures are useless and never make sense. Teach the simplest in class and test the hardest in exam. He doesn't know how to teach a concept. Slides are mess. Even himself makes lots of mistakes. I got straight A+ in CHE2 series but got a B in the 1st midterm of this class. All the good ratings of him are FAKE. AGAIN AVOID HIM.
He does care his students but honestly speaking his lectures are waste of time and you probably learned nothing if you don't spend tons of hours in OH. He barely goes beyond the basic examples but throws insanely hard questions in the exam. Didn't see feedback of HW. I was fooled by all those 5.0 ratings of him and now I regret taking this class.
Awful class. Concepts are poorly explained. Unfair test. Short problem set or Just in Time questions never help. Never receive feedback of SPS. Aced CHE118 series, but this class was a struggle. Do yourself a favor—stay away.
Dr. Velazquez is caring and passionate. His class felt.a little disorganized in the beginning, but he changed things up to better accommodate the class. Lots of review sessions for tests which was very helpful. I highly recommend taking his class.
His lectures and surprisingly a bit disorganized for someone who has been teaching this course for a while, but that's really his only downside. He's extremely caring and really does value any feedback he gets, especially on the lectures, practice, or exams. Definitely take 124A with him if you can! Easy A
I like the space of his class because it gives me enough time to consume the materials. Doing well on the 2 Midterms helps not to worry about the Final (materials are rushed and vaguely covered at the end). Going over slides before the exam. SPS helps with the exam. Generally, doable and fair A class, if you put in effort.
Very confused by the high ratings. Does not prepare you for material on exams. Do not trust the practice exams, they are nothing like the actual exams (much much harder). Passionate about chemistry but clearly teaching is not his primary focus. One of the worst professors I've had at Davis. SPS also don't prepare you for exams.
