Good organization (used to be not so good), helpful with papers, good job
Good teacher and sexy, too
A very good lecturer and a hot prof!
uninspired
Shouldn't have split 207 with Dr. Kraay. The split teachings were very distracting at best. Topics of American and Brazilian slavery should have been segregated.
best history professor I've ever had!
Excellent. Clear, concise, approachable. Be prepared for lots of reading. 2 essays, 2 exams. She definitely expects you to do your work.
Compared to the other teacher she taught with, she was great. Easy to understand and follow along with.
Dr. Spangler has an almost otherworldly talent (pact with the Devil, maybe?) for taking a topic like "slave diets" and making it captivating. Also: Fastest marker in the universe. Extremely accessible and helpful, too.
Good prof but unfortunately she is a **** Democrat
Excellent prof. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. Friendly and respectful of students. Be sure to meet with her to discuss your paper - she is very nice and gives helpful suggestions to let you know exactly what she is looking for. A fair marker. Classes are interesting.
Very good prof - makes things very easy and straight forward. Very clear and concise. She takes her job as a TEACHER very seriously (not just another prof with tenure). Seems to be genuinly concerned with the class. Very organised.
Very good prof, she's enthusiastic and knowledgeable, maybe some times a little dry but, good friends and good topic matter made the class a blast. Marks very well, and I would take another class with her.
She was a very helpful teacher whos really cares about her class, she made a decent team with Kraay but the contrast of Brazlian and American slvery was hard to follow sometimes.
Very clear speaker and entertaining. Good class on a not so intersesting topic.
good prof. but if teaching with Kraay I would warn you to stay away from this class. IT IS BADDD. it may be interesting to learn... but the exams and the essay make it all that much worse. BAD CLASS.
Good class. She talks a lot about slavery, so if this is your interest, good class. You can get a decent grade by taking good notes or by reading the readings, if you do both, you will be able to do really well in the class. She is very nice and approachable, and makes a lot of time available to meet with students.
Makes class interesting as can be dependent on subject matter. This class focusing on the US South and slavery was very well taught. She is very personable, remembers your name in smaller classes, and very easy to talk to about papers or exams. Is a fair marker, though I would suggest taking good notes and reading the textbook to do well.
Dr. Spangler is an amazing professor. She knows her subject matter, lectures are interesting and she is extremely helpful. Attendance is mandatory, but she makes class interesting, so it's easy to go! Make sure you keep up with the readings and take good notes, and you'll get an A :) Look forward to more classes with her!
Dr. Spangler is truly the best professor I've had. Incredibly helpful, so smart, & loves what she does, which comes across in the way she teaches. This seminar was by far the most rewarding class I've taken & I'll always be thankful to her for all she has done for me as a history student. HIGHLY recommended - the best the history dept has to offer!
She made even the most uneventful topics interesting. And she used really subtle humour that made the class great. The class was very well organized, and if you pay attention, and read the materials, you will get a good grade. The midterm and final were both questions that we were told about, and a handful of short answer topics from the readings
I was extremely turned off by her overwhelming use of the word 'uhh' in her lectures, but once I got over that, I loved them. She's really informative, and is excited about what she's teaching.
Awesome. Especially if you haven't taken loads of history before, because she is very approachable, always asks if we have questions, presents the material well. Overall have really enjoyed the course. The U of C should hire more profs like her - she is really genuinely engaged with the students and not just sitting on a tenure.
I've had Dr. Spangler for three different classes now, and I can honestly say she is one of, if not the best professor I've ever had.She expects quality work, but is extremely approachable and provides you with the tools necessary for you to do your best. She is personable, and knows her craft well. She inspires you to do your best, and is accomodati
Dr Spangler was great. She was really helpful when I needed help and was very approachable. Her marking wasn't easy but it wasn't overly difficult either. You just have to do quality work. I would take another class from her.
Awesome prof! Really helpful with writing papers, engaging lecture style, and genuinely cares that students do well. Overall, a helpful course that helped polish my writing and researching skills.
I guess if you suck at researching and writing good quality papers then this class helps, but I found that it just repeated a lot of the same stuff from previous history classes. I can't say that I would recommend it to anyone, unless you are only concerned with History and don't have anything better to take. I'm a HTST major by the way!
I am generally a pretty quite kind of guy and really am not too big on seminars but Spangler was very helpful with just about everything about this course, I would definitely recommend taking an upper level course with her, she is very easy to talk to but it takes a bit to get used to what she expects and what she is looking for in essays.
Overall a good professor, and very helpful with the term paper if you ask for it. Posted good study guides for the midterm and final, but was still pretty hard to do well on them with a large essay focus.
I'd recommend taking her actual history classes and not any method or theory classes with her. She's strong in her area of expertise and generally does a better job of teaching those courses than the more technical ones. She doesn't always explain herself in the methods and theory classes, nor does she always make expectations really clear.
Spangler is knowledgeable, interesting, and very organized. She's helpful and very clear with her expectations. It is necessary to do the readings and attend the lectures to do well in her class. Hands down one of my favorite profs!
I thought this was going to be the worst class this semester since it's theory, but Spangler is so funny and engaging that it's my favorite. She does a great job making what should be a terrible class really interesting. 100% would take more classes with her. Readings were very important since they were discussed in groupwork every week.
Dr. Spangler is a great prof. She is enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. She is a fair grader, and is understanding with the need for extensions on papers. I really learned a lot from this class, and she is definitely one of the best history profs I've had at U of C. There are lots of readings, so keep up to not get swamped for exams.
Dr. Spangler is absolutely attuned to the needs of students and is beyond inspiring. She expects good work, but sets clear expectations. Extremely approachable and helpful, grad or undergrad.
Extremely engaging, made lectures fun and interesting for a class that would not typically be considered so. She was approachable, kind, and understanding. Dr. Spangler created an environment where everyone felt comfortable participating. She marks fairly, and gives great feedback. Excellent professor, would love to take another course with her.
Dr. Spangler made this dreaded mandatory class an incredible experience. The material itself was boring, but she was able to make it engaging and hilarious. She has a wonderful personality that makes her very approachable and she is always willing to help. She marks fair and is understanding of student needs. Lectures are clear and reasonably paced
Dr. Spangler is the 'Jewel' of the History Department. I took her courses whenever possible. Amazingly helpful when writing papers, be sure to use her as a resource and you will have a much easier time when it comes to writing term papers. Fair marker, she can tell when you put the work in and will reward original and interesting perspectives.
Dr. Spangler is one of the most amazing professors that this university has to offer. This was not my first class with her, nor will it be my last. As a professor, she is clear, organized, and makes the taught subjects interesting. As a person, she is kind, understanding, and incredibly helpful. Required, but 1 of the best classes of my university.
Extremely knowledgeable and really kind professor. Readings are important and lectures touch on the key points of texts. Texts are easy to read! The Mid-term exam was VERY fair and didn't test on silly things that we don't need to know, it was heavily based on the readings which is fantastic, in case you miss a class. VERY interesting course!!!
Doctor Spangler is a fantastic professor. Her lectures were communicated with enthusiasm and the course material itself was incredibly interesting. The tests were fair and the paper was also marked quite fairly, just make sure you study the go over the assigned readings too! Overall this was on of the best classes I've taken throughout my degree
sounds like a GPA booster, nope. So hard for a 200 level, so much info that isnt very organized, and she kinda messes up dates sometimes. No text book to look to for further explanation. Bi weekly quizzes on tonnes of pages, but only 10 questions, timed and very fast. No real direction for midterms, talks too fast to hand write notes. Bad ppts.
She is very approachable but her lectures are not great. HSTS 200 sounds like a GPA booster and it could be, just the topics are extremely boring. Her lectures are vague and often overlap timelines and concepts her powerpoints are terrible. Readings are mandatory (about 30-40 pages) every lecture to do bi weekly quizzes (timed under 10 mins). Avoid
One of the more inspirational profs I've ever had. She took what I thought would be the worst class in existence to being the class I was the most excited to attending. Be prepared to actually listen during lectures, all of her power points are skeletal and barely contain info. Old school lecture style, yet super fun.
She was a very sweet prof and she cares about her students. If you are not here to learn, don't take this class. This class has a lot of information and you will only pass if you're a driven student. This course is for people who want to be educated, and trust me you will be by the end of the semester.
Jewel is a solid prof. She's super nice and generally makes the course pretty easy. However, she has reading quizzes usually based on 3 readings and each reading is 20 pages long and pretty dry for content. Overall, it was a good course for an elective.
Dr Spangler is a wonderful educator and I learned so much from her. Yes, her courses are very lecture-heavy and sometimes can be a bit dry - but she is SO organized with her slides and she connects the material together well. She is a quick marker and her tests were VERY fair. She let us bring in a double-sided page of notes to the midterm/final.
HTST 300 is one of the driest, most dreaded classes in the History program. Dr. Spangler makes it as good as is humanly possible. She has a great sense of humour, learns everyone's names, and is a respectful, approachable prof. Brilliant lady who could make reading the phone book interesting but some of the assignments lack clarity.
Dr. Spangler definitely made HTST 300 course more enjoyable and easier to digest. Her slides and presentations are carefully organized, and she talks in a way that you want to listen. She wants you to do well, and even takes the time to learn names. She is always accessible and very approachable after class, and gives extensions upon request.
This class was surprisingly interesting for a non-history major. She was eager to help and was very easy to talk to. She gave clear directions for assignments and provided multiple sources to write the final essay. Make sure to go to class because you get easy marks for participating in small study groups.
Really lovely person. Makes what could be a very dull option interesting and engaging. I would recommend going to class and taking comprehensive notes as the tests are often straight out of what she's saying in class. Do the readings, they suck, but there will be quizzes and tests on them. 3 tests and 4 quizzes total.
Really love Jewel. Shes such a fair tester and genuinely cares for students. Shes such a nice person and makes me want to take a HTST class but only with her!
Dr Spangler is a fantastic prof to take if you are unsure about taking a history class. Periodic reading quizzes with 1-2 hour readings each week. Shes really funny and I can gladly say I will be taking another class with her and will probably be switching to history as a major. Shes THAT good
This is for course HIST200. She is a boring lecturer, but tries to keep it interesting. Keeps the topics very easy to follow and adds some lame jokes in as well, which is great! I showed up to 90% lectures did half the readings and the class was a breeze. Would recommend taking this class for a GPA boost.
Jewel is a super sweet person and she tries to keep the lectures interesting but they are extremely boring but are beneficial to attend. No textbook. Midterms and final were very fair and not to difficult. The only problem with her is how boring the lectures are. She does do at home quizzes but they are very easy to pass with two screens open.
Lectures are super dry and boring, but the material is easy and makes for a good option. Do the readings, complete the quizzes, show up to lectures and its an easy A
This prof is amazing! She really knows how to engage students- even though some of the topics are a bit dry. Showing up lectures is important as the content slides are useless without her explanations and extra information. I found the exams and the ready quizzes to be really easy as long as you show up and engage.
I have never been a history fan but I loved this class. Dr. Spangler is very knowledgeable, and her lecture content is well organized and interesting. Tests are all multiple choice and you can easily get 100% if you listen in lectures and take a few notes. A fair amount of reading but not unmanageable if you stay on top of it. Thanks Dr. Spangler!
No major issues. She's a good lecturer, but the readings she gives are too hard (They're all really long and written in really small print, and it's hard to get through them, let alone retain anything from them).
Made it really easy to pass. If you showed up to lecture, you would basically get an A on the two midterms. Reading quizzes were so easy.
Spnagler is a caring prof but her lectures are boring, she tries to make them interesting but they really are not. She doesn't post full lecture notes online, only an outline so dont skip lectures. she gives you around 50 pages of readings per week and if you're not a reading person you will struggle on the tests. Easy GPA booster if you read.
Easy A if you're prepared to read but it's not necessary to memorize minute details. Four quizzes, two midterms and a final. She's very nice and I actually thought the readings she chose were interesting.
Extremely kind prof. Nice vibes. Main issue is that class is EXTREMELY boring. Might not think that's a bad thing but it is. When it's a struggle to stay awake, it's not necessarily a GPA booster anymore. Struggle to stay alert. VERY dull material. Learning about printing press, tea, ice, fossil fuels. I shiver remembering it. Vietnam flashbacks.
The 2 midterms were easy as long as you attended lecture and went over notes (they were MC). Online quizzes consisted of readings (no textbook) but they were fairly easy if you actually read through them. Lectures were somewhat heavy but doable and she likes to use every minute so no way you are getting out early.
Not the best prof. No essays so there's no room to improve on your skills, it's all just listen, memorize and test. Everyone did good on the first midterm and she didn't like that so she made the second midterm and final harder and raised the weighting for the final. Not something, in my opinion, that a prof should do. Refused to round up grades.
A super kind prof who tries to make lecture interesting... unfortunately, it can be difficult to stay awake during the class. But she doesn't really upload notes online so it's important to attend and try to listen. The readings are pretty long, but you could still do well on the quizzes without reading them.
Her lectures are quite boring and exams cover things she may have said in passing.
Readings were long but easy to do well on quizzes, midterms and final as long as you read and go to class. Not too taxing if you don't wish to write papers. Nice prof.
Jewel is truly amazing; she made the classes fun and entertaining and communicated material very clearly. Class is mandatory as she only posts outlines of slides and expands on the material in class. Online articles are required to read for online reading quizzes, and for midterms/final. Overall easy class if you show up and study.
I had her during COVID-19 and she is the most understanding and helpful prof by far. She is so kind, and really cares about the students. Her lectures were fairly engaging and the readings are long but interesting. This is a pretty easy class if you do the readings and show up to lectures.
Marks received in Dr. Spangler's class are predicated heavily upon quizzes based on assigned readings. That being said, Dr. Spangler really cares about her students. Through the coronavirus quarantine, she has been tirelessly working to make the transition to online classes as smooth as possible. Taking History 200 with her is a solid decision.
Dr. Spangler can only be described as my rock. I have loved every lecture. She's so nice and so caring, even in a large class. Her lectures are interesting and entertaining and the readings she chooses can be long but they are really interesting ! She tells you exactly what to expect for midterms and there's no trick questions! She's great :)
Dr. Spangler is a very sweet professor, who is clearly passionate about the content of the course, as well as the students. She is determined to answer student questions, even if she has to research the answer and come back to you later. This class is definitely a GPA booster, as the grade is determined from three tests and three easy quizzes.
Although her lectures can get boring at times I enjoyed this class overall. Her tests and quizzes are very fair and she is always ready to answer and questions you may have.
Dr. Spangler makes it very evident that she cares about her students which is uncommon among many first year classes. She is always willing to help you and answer any questions you may have. If you show up and take notes you will do well in the class. She makes it clear that she isn't trying to trick you either and makes her tests very fair.
Very sweet prof and she really respects student. Material is very straight forward and easy to understand. 4 Online quizzes based on readings, 2 midterms and final exam. She made the transition from in class to online very smooth as well. Attendance is 100% not mandatory as lectures can be a little boring and content is fairly simple.
Jewel is a very good prof. She is extremely nice and is willing to answer any questions one may have. She makes the lectures interesting, although the readings can be a bit hard to get through. The module exams and quizzes aren't too bad. She's an amazing prof!
Professor Spangler is an excellent teacher. She is very fair in her marking and makes sure that students understand what is being taught. She is also very understanding and willing to push deadlines. I would definitely take her class again.
An absolute gem. Will take more HTST courses if she teaches them. She obviously cares about the course and students. Did a fantastic job with online delivery. Attend the lectures and do the readings and you will get an A.
Prof Spangler truly was a jewel. She's super kind and obviously cares for her students and for the material she taught and understanding about the added difficulties of this semester. As long as you watch her lecture videos and do the readings, it's an east, interesting class.
Dr. Spangler is the best professor ever. I would absolutely recommend taking her class especially if you're a first-year student. She is so caring and kind, it will melt your heart. She also gives amazing lectures that are genuinely interesting. I would love to take her class again.
Such a great prof! Really interesting class, maybe because the prof really cares to teach interesting material. It was online but it was great. You have to keep up with the weekly readings, but everything is spaced out pretty well to keep it manageable with other courses. She even cancelled one of the quizzes and gave everyone 100 on it!
This is a great course to take as a junior option. Jewel is a great professor and is always refreshing the content taught in class. Does have a quiz every week but they are quite easy. Also don't need to write any essays which is rare in a history class.
Dr. Spangler was an amazing professor. She cares about what she is teaching and knows her stuff. I learned so much and actually enjoyed myself. The tests were easy, straight forward as long as you read the questions carefully. Lectures were posted online with once a week zoom meetings. Definitely take notes cause there is a lot of information.
Dr. Spangler is an amazing professor and you'll definitely see that she knows her lectures well. She cares for the students and will adjust to the need of the class. . There's a weekly reading quiz that needs to be taken and weekly readings to be read. Exams are based on the lectures and are open book. Lectures and readings are all posted online.
I had taken Dr. Spangler's HTST 200 class which covered important everyday items and the important history behind them. Her lectures are very easy to follow and I was able to learn a lot from her. She is also very accommodating, having cancelled numerous quizzes for the sake of our mental health. Highly recommend taking one of her classes!
Went over the lecture time every single week and mumbles through her lectures with a lot of ums and ahs while she collects her thoughts. What she takes 60 mins to say could easily be done in 40. Easy marker and very intelligent just boring as heck.
Dr. Spangler is a solid prof. Her assigned readings and quizzes weren't too difficult, as long as you pay attention, you will do well! Class content was engaging and lectures were well organized. If discussions are your thing, maybe try a different class! This one is more lecture based.
Professor Spangler was amazing and I highly recommend this class. She covers each topic very thoroughly and makes sure those who don't attend in person class are still delivered the material. You can tell she truly cares for her students and their success. I would definitely take her class again!
Is accommodating to the class (gives extensions for tests during midterm/final season, etc.), is clear with what you need to know, and provides the things you need to do well in her class. Some lectures can drag on, but other than that, as long as you show up to class (or even just read the online material), you're set.
Dr. Spangler is one of the best professors I've had! Her lectures are incredibly interesting, and her tests are fair. She responds to emails quickly, despite the large class size. Very accommodating and kind. I will definitely be looking out for other courses she teaches.
Professor Spangler is an absolute gem. I chose this class as an option and didn't think I would be overly interested in the content but she made it extremely enjoyable and immersive. On top of that, she is super funny and is very passionate about her work, which rubs off on the students! Great option choice and even greater prof. 11/10 recommend!
Dr. Spangler lives up to her first name: she is an absolute gem. Spangler is easily the most caring educator I have ever had. That isn't to say she doesn't ensure she does her job, she is a great teacher, she just makes a class as stereotypically boring as history an extremely engaging experience.
I love this professor as long as you put in the effort you should be able to get a good grade take this class!!!
Dr Spangler is a jewel, she was always considerate and understanding and very clear about the marking criteria. There is quite a bit of reading but if you are interested in the material it's not too bad. Great lectures as well such an interesting and informative and sweet professor
Lecture heavy class but lectures are very interesting and engaging. The class was easy, all multiple choice quizzes/tests. Also very understanding and cared about students.
This is a great class. Spangler presented the material clearly and made an effort to relate to her students. She was clear about what would be on the tests and discussed any readings that might appear. Even if you aren't a history major, Spangler makes this course great and you should definitely take it.
Such a wonderful professor. Everything about this course was awesome, and I miss going to lectures with Dr. Spangler. She was so easy to ask questions to, and gave really good responses to all questions asked in lecture regardless of if they were on topic or not. She had no required textbook and provided us with all texts needed for the course.
Dr. Spangler is literally one of the best profs. Her lectures are entertaining and she makes the course material so fun to learn. I keep e-mailing her to see if she has another class! if you have the opportunity don't hesitate to hit enroll. She was a great introduction into how uni was run as well!
Dr. Spangler was seriously a great prof. I had her in person last semester but she was so considerate and recorded her voice for all the lectures. She cares a lot about her students and makes the material engaging. All of her tests were comprehension based as long as you know your stuff you're good.
Spangler is my favorite history prof and htst 200 has no papers which is nice its a good gpa booster even if you put in the bare-minimum.
Attendance is mandatory to do well on the final exam, and the 5 quizzes are easy but totally based off the textbook. The 2 papers were fun to write, and Spangler is a very fair marker. It is clear she wants her students to succeed and I found her lectures to be interesting and fun. Such a sweet woman, will definitely be taking more of her classes.
Spangler is a fantastic prof. Lectures are easy to follow. The class is graded by two papers which are fun and easy to write, a few online quizzes which are an easy 100%, and a final exam which is a lot but not too difficult. She knows a ton about the topic and is super knowledgeable. Super passionate about what she teaches, too. She's a must-take!
Dr. Spangler is an amazing professor overall. Her lectures are super entertaining and she has an awesome sense of humour. The only thing I would say is beware of her grading, she can be pretty harsh and she does not give much room for improvement or chances to raise your grade. Also her TA's tend to mark even harder so just be aware.
