Can't explain problems beyond the book, uses the examples from...the BOOK.
Strange guy, unclear, uses only the book, but passed me when he shouldn't have.
Dr. J! Very cool, rough accent, tough to understand.. but easy going!
Accent is deadly. Common exams = he doesn't teach whats on exam.
This guy is a pretty easy professor, his exams come straight form his notes. He is a fair grader unlike other 300 level NJIT professors. He is a bit hard to understand. If you dont understand he'll help you out just ASK!!!
Great teacher. Teaches what's on the exam and doesn't fall behind schedule. Other professors shoudl follow his example.

He's kind of strange... Seems lost when he's teaching the material... He tends to make a lot of mistakes in class which makes learning kind of difficult... He is helpful though.. If you don't understand he can explain it ..not well though
Hes willing to help. His english is off though. Slighty above fair grader but not easy grader though . Math 222 in general is a rough class but he made it easier to learn.
he is a good profesor, his teaching style is very effective because he gives you the theory then gives you example to make sure you learn how to work the problems, he sometimes makes mistakes however,he is a resonable grader
Try ur best to avoid this guy. Deadly accent and can't teach. He might be smart but not a good teacher at all.
STAY AWAY! HE CAN'T TEACH!
If u ask a question, he'll give u answers to totally different question. He has very heavy accent and he doesn't care whether u understood or not.
All the newbies shouldn't talk untill they've tried other NJIT math teachers. This one is awesome compared to the others. Have fun in Calc III.
Hey this prof. is awesome! He does make mistakes in the class but he also corrects them right away...believe me or not but this actually helped me to understand difficult problems. GREAT THING is that watever he teaches.....comes in the exam.
this professor is very good and helpful. he will take his time to help you out. Even though he have a accent that most cant understand he will try his hardest to help students understand the material of the course. he very leaning on the grading
Good professor but lectures are too difficult to understand mostly because his accent is horrible... it took couple weeks to undestand that "jurion" means "union". My math knowledge did improve a little bit but English became much wors
He is a very nice prof. He willing to help as long as you try hard. He will be in office hour when the student need him
Capable teacher. Has terrible accent though.
If you listen carefully, you can understand his accent after a few classes. He has a very structured way of teaching, by following the book strictly, so its hard to get confused and off track. If you study from his quizzes, then the exams are easy.
he is a really good professor because he explains everything and answers your all the questions.
As RAT's English is getting better, so is his teaching. Bring up old exam problems, and you'll have no difficulties passing. Will help you in and out of class, so long as you seek.
RAT's the man. Funny guy if you joke around with him. Teaches the theory and problem solving methods, follows the book so you can't get lost, and prepares you very well for exams. Took class in summer and was easiest math class ever. Medium accent.
RAT is da man. Ladies and gentlemen, this is as good as it gets at NJIT.You don't even have to do homework, just go over his notes for an exam or quiz.Make sure you attend his review classes too.Very Tolerable accent.EASY as long as you put minimal effort
He is the best math prof @ NJIT. He does examples all the time making the exams a snap. I didn't need to study for the exams and still got a B. Made this class very interesting unlike others
i love this professor's teaching. He makes you visualize what he is talking about. He is very helpful.Take him and you will enjoy your semester.
most ppl mock indians for their accent. i was in his class ova the summer, i aced it. his accent was ite but his teaching was amazing, he's a pretty easy grader. trust me he's one of those profesors who knows his shyt.
very helpful goes over a lot of problems to prepare us on the exams i might take him again in differential equation
Pretty cool dude...makes alot of good jokes...reviews everything before exams...great teacher
nice professor... is always willing to help, gives plenty of examples... doesnt collect hw....gives a weekly quiz and hardly kept us the full time. good option for this course...
you know guys he is awesome but he's not indian... he's african... i would know this i asked him.
I'm taking his class right now. This guy is really good. Things that I never comprehended before, I understand now. He goes over a lot of examples before the exam and will help you out anytime as long as you ask. He collects homework every class and there's a weekly quiz that is not bad.
He doesn't know his stuff, also bad english too. WOnt understand half of your questions. Also i think discrete is his weakest topic so take anything with him but discrete.
He does a LOT of examples which is extremely helpful but the subject topic is hard. By going fast through the lessons he usually has about 3 or 4 classes before the exams just for review. He also gives shortcuts (such as formulas) that other teachers dont give. Ask questions if you get confused.
Good teacher. Sometimes he's a little hard to understand, but he's a good teacher. Will not tell you anything about any exams!

Had this guy for 2 classes, calc 2 and descrete, he's a funny guy, really cool, very nice person, he's got a strong accent, but its one of the easier ones to pick up. Does lots of examples, takes tons of questions. He does what he can with grading. Overall a good math teacher. When he's in the classroom you know he's only here for teaching
great teacher , mad examples , best calc 1 teacher at the school
this guy is a great teacher, theres really nothing else to say.
When he says sqaure root, it sounds like he's saying "squirely". no joke.
altho has very thick accent i learn alot from the dude he gets TWO THUMBS UP FROM ME
Bad English. Very hard to understand what he was saying. The only thing you can do is just to copy everything from the board and later study it by yourself. He is the only one who teaches Discrete Math (226). So, I guess you have no chose guys. Good Luck!
His English is very poor and he goes way too fast. Also, he doesn't seem to understand questions in English. Try someone else.
he's the best profs i eva had for any of my math courses, take notes in calss and your set for the exams. the book aint**** when compared to his notes. also i took him for math 222. he should be the chairman of the math department.
He was a good teacher. Took me a week or two to figure out what he was saying but his examples made the tests really easy. He's also a cool person in general. Overall Good experience
I have not seen a son of a ***** like this one!! The first semester I took this guy, he was almost scared of his students! The next semester, he learned to speak up a lil and crack jokes once in a while. But now, he is just using his position to screw whoever is questioning his "capabilities"! I WILL be the one to bring him back in his spot!
Guys, Please help me get this a**hole out of the freakin school somehow. I dont want any other students to suffer like I and the rest of the students in my class did. He would really mess up your GPA plus makes the material way harder than it is
I duno what others are saying about this guy. But trust me this is the best prof i ever had at NJIT. MATH 222 is Hard its not eay class you have to do work, but teaching wise this guys is great does alot of examples, trust me ALOT of examples. and pplz who left negative comments are just **** didnt prepare for this course. A+++++ Recommanded
Ratnaswamy is the best Prof. I've ever had at NJIT. I've known a bunch of kids who failed his class, specifically Math 104. To tell you the truth, the reason they failed is probably the same reason they were placed in 104: they treat college like high school. If you listen to Ratna and do the homework you will get an A. Guarenteed.
Very ruff accent, goes through the material very quickly and its easy to get lost, ASK QUESTIONS, he is very willing to make you understand but if u dont ask questions there are too few examples to let the material sink in, goes from one topic onto the next very quickly.
Very cool, probobly the only prof from the moon who speaks alaskan. Very cool guy. Teaches abit fast but makes up for it by being very helpful.
I had him as a recitation teacher in fall 06. he is very very helpful but has some accent. I will definitely take him If his name pops up on the list.
He's one of the best math professors that I've taken at NJIT. I've learned a lot from him and he's a descent guy. You ask him for help and he'll go out of his way to make sure you understand. His accent isn't as bad as the other professors. Attendance is a must in his class.
He is the best Math Professors at njit. He teaches with many examples which is helpful to do the homework and with tests. I would recommend this guy for any math class. I took him for Cal 3 and he was good.
Gives very little homework.Goes through the material at a crazy rate, but is easy to understand and does his best to ensure you understand it. Forgiving in regards to attendance/tardiness, but don't do it deliberately, you'll probably miss a lot. Overall, an excellent teacher.
Gives almost no homework but it's not a good thing in MATH109. You need to do the homework from syllabus (whether he assigns it or not) if you want to be able to pass this class. Dr. Jey's speech is hard to understand, he makes a lot of mistakes when solving problems on the board. If you want to do good in calculus I'd recommend other professors.
This guy was the best math professor ive taken at njit. his accent is heavy and i found it to be funny, especially when he says anything with "square". but soon enough, his accent was perfectly understandable (give it time). he does go through the material quite fast so pay attention and copy down everything he writes. he explains everything well a
Prof Ratnaswamy is a great guy. He does go very fast at time and his accent takes a while to get to used to. However, he is light hearted and furthermore a great professor. He's made DEQ a lot easier than I thought it'd be. I highly recommend this guy!!
This guy is awesome. At first, he seems like he would be strict, but he is incredibly easy to understand and he takes everything at a medium pace. He will gladly help you out with anything in and out of class. He is a very fair grader as well. Highly recommended!
Very good professor. He has a very slight accept, and is usually easy to understand. He is an excellent teacher, and will also go over examples of every type of problem. He is usually serious, but does have a sense of humor. Always willing to help. Only problem is if you ask him if your work is correct he will probably just say yes if it is close.
He is a smart guy, very open to questions. He walks around to help you and does his best to answer any questions. His accent is thick, but understandable, and he has a sense of humor!
This was an architecture math class where the subject matter was supposed to be calculus, but the class really taught statistics. I would not recommend this class with him, because most of our time was spent explaining to him how do do the most simple problems or explaining why his answer sheet for the test he made up had the wrong answers.
he does go over things fast, but he does ALOT of examples which really makes things clear. He is a good teacher and very helpful, its just a hard course.
i don't know whats wrong with you people who took him in the summer. i was in his summer class and he made calc 2 seem easier than pre calc. EASY A. yes he does go fast, SO he can review for 1-2 full classes before exams. Seriously you guys need to put some of your own work in sometimes. take him, he's great and he's funny
He won't help you at all.A nd if you pass the first and second exams and do poorly on the third he will fail you automatically. But the funny part is after he fails you he won't ever speak to you again.
Okay its very simple. All you have to do is study for the quizes and exams (shocking right?) and if you just cant figure something out, go talk to him during office hours and he will seriously spend a couple of hours reteaching you the material till you get it. Put the effort into the class and you will be fine. He is a good professor.
Tough class at this school. He does try to help students out and does a good job explaining. Can be boring at times and he does a ton of examples in class. I would take him again.
Writes extremely fast with almost no mistakes. Writes a lot of examples. If you dont get it the 1st time youll understand by the # of examples he writes. Very Helpful. Not only does he writes fast and talks fast but he will leave the class before you blink so take advantage and ask Questions since he leaves class asap. Very good prof. Take him!
He makes a lot of mistakes when writing problems down, (slips in an extra negative or writes pi/3 when he meant pi/6, nothing too serious but can get frustrating.) Other than that a pretty decent teacher. Just study hard for his quizzes and exams.
Amazing teacher...the first and ONLY teacher I ever met in my life that could teach as fast I could learn
He wasn't helpful at all. He would always dodge any question that students asked. He also seemed to rush through material not caring whether students understood the material or not. This was one of the easiest courses I would take, but it turns out that the professor's poor teaching ability guaranteed I would get less than an A.
tough class with very tedious proofs. jey takes some of the heat off by giving out a lot of partial credit for effort on quizzes/tests.
Best professor ever. I'm not one for thick accents, which he has, and yet I learned so well from him. He goes through every objective and does an example to show you how to do it & a bunch of examples that you go through and he goes over. didn't even need to study for exams because i learned it all in class. pay attention and you have your A.
Horribly dry and speaks the sped of light. Avoid if possible.
Wonderfully damp. Talks at the speed of smell. Take if possible.
Good: He does a great amount of examples in each class, and is very helpful during office hours. Bad: He works faster than the speed of light, teaches entirely by rote memorization and drills, and his English is nearly incomprehensible. I got a B, but still feel like I haven't learned anything.
he's a solid prof. lots of examples so you can't get lost. just make sure you have a fast pencil and that you sit in the front. he's speaks softly. his english is above average for a foreign NJIT prof, but it can still get a little confusing. he gives alot of time to review for exams also. solid recommendation
Super clear. Does a lot of examples. You can tell he wants you to do well. Definitely recommend him
Professor Ratnaswamy is a great professor. He does go fast paced, but he also does many examples in class and spends AT LEAST one full class period reviewing before an exam. You do have to put in the work to make sure you understand everything, but it's pretty easy to get an A if you do.
Professor Ratnaswamy is pretty chill. As long as you put in the work and make sure you understand everything, you're on his good side. He does go fast paced, but he does a lot of examples in class and spends at least one class period reviewing before exams. Definitely take him if you can!
You have a lot of opportunities to go over specific examples and review questions from quizzes, homework, tests, etc. He's extremely knowledgeable but sometimes I felt some concepts weren't really clear (but you can find a lot of supplemental material online). In all, not the class if you want to understand the theory as he teaches by memorizing
I had Ratnaswamy for Differential Equations, and simply put: he is the most helpful math professor. He will quickly derive the theory, but almost his entire lecture is spent doing examples, which he we then personally walk around and help any individual with questions. Best Math professor I've had out of my 6 math courses so far.
I dropped Calc2 last year since it's a hard class,he makes it seem like a piece of cake. Sit in the front since he speaks softly and writes with the speed of light. He goes over the theory in 2 seconds and then does 100 examples. You learn it better that way. If you miss class don't worry, watch the MyMathL. chaptervideo and go to his office hours.
This professor is one of the best at NJIT! I can guarantee you that because other professors are lacking explanation of topics in DEQ. His whole class is based off doing examples, which is what every professor should do to get the idea of the topic. HW and quiz is given each week. This class has taught me a lot.I would recommend to take his class.
Does lots of practice examples in class. Mostly just deals with repetition. Didn't really learn the material or follow text. He will answer any questions you have so ask. Tests are taken from previous exams so practice them ALOT. He helps during office hours and email. Hw and quizzes are harder than the exams, but they small % of final grade.
Does a thousand examples every class. It can get annoying but it helps when you don't fully understand something. Kind of hard to understand sometimes, and he has some trouble answering questions sometimes because he can't find the words in english to explain it. Overall good professor.
Ratnaswamy is an all out great professor. In your first week you will not like him due to his thick accent and soft spoken voice, but after a while you become to understand him much clearer. Pay attention to the problems he does in class, and do them in your notes. Usually he let us out about 30 minutes early. 10 Minutes theory : hour of practice.
A respectable professor. Please remember that not all teaching styles work for everyone. Professor Ratnaswamy teaches the methods of solving the problems, then spends the majority of class time going over many similar problems. Works for students that learn through repetition. Will often end class 5 to 20 minutes early.
I would categorize him under my weaker professors. He has a very thick accent which at time was hard to understand, and he rushed through a lot of material which made it easy to get lost or fall behind. Quizzes weekly.
This guy is a beast
He talks really fast during class. He does a lot of practice during class but he's the most helpful during his office hours.
This professor is amazing. He gives a lot of notes in his lectures. But worry not if you happen to miss some of his notes he does a ton of examples on the board of varying difficulties. You can ask questions. Only thing is that sometimes he jumps to answering the question before you can fully ask, just bear with him he does answer them properly.
Writes too fast and too small on chalk board. Yes he does many examples, but quantity does not equal quality. Its not only hard to understand his writing regardless of how close you are to the board, but his accent paired with his fast talking is hard to understand any of his examples. His test are harder than any of the examples he gives. AVOID
Bad english and writes wayyy to fast need I say more? I honestly could pass his class without showing up. I just teach myself everything going to his class is useless. Atleast you get to stare at his shiny head the whole class!
Hes a good professor. Does a lot of examples that are based on the hw and does an exam review. NJIT common exams are obvs hard, but grade is mostly dependent on the amount of time you put into studying.
Got 90 on first two midterms and 60 on final and somehow ended up with a C+ in the class. Welcome to NJIT math everyone. Absolute bs
Nice grader, very clear lectures, if a bit fast. Problem: he speaks better English than he understands, i.e. his lectures are fine, but if you have a question, his answer may be unintelligible. Better to check the book after class. That said, I had to retake this class, and I did much better with him than with the first prof. Not a bad choice.
provided little to no feedback for an online course, I had more (and better) interactions and feedback from fellow classmates over course material.
He has a soft voice, so sit in front if u take him. Also he goes very fast through material and he has difficulty understanding questions during lectures. So it takes time to get used to. This gave the class a few laughs throughout the semester.
The prof has a thick accent but you will get used to it soon. Goes over theory and does examples which really help. He will answer questions you have. He does reviews which help for the commons. There is a weekly quiz which is easy and helps stay in touch with the material. Math 222 itself is not an easy math course. Would recommend and take again.
I enjoyed the class, I would say the most important thing to do is get a seat up front. My mistake was sitting in the back for the first half of the semester. Sitting up front was a difference for the better. He writes q u i c k. If any questions just be sure to stop him in his tracks and he'll gladly explain it. Maybe bring a spare marker too.
I took him for the online summer class. I have never had a harder time. Incredibly difficult accent and is not easy to understand what he goes over in class at all. Does not stop for a second, and writes with a mouse. Do not know how he is in person. But for an online class. BIG BIG NO GO. Dont even think about taking him.
This professor is one of the WORST professors I have ever had in my entire life. He doesn't explain a single thing properly, makes a TON of mistakes while doing work, and doesn't respond to questions. Avoid if you can or prepare for the WORST time in your life. Thanks for nothing Professor Jeyakumaran Ratnaswamy.
There is literally nothing good about this professor. Don't take this class with this professor. One of the worst professors you can get. Grades randomly, I understand the topic well enough to get an A, but this professor has NO idea what is happening. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guy was great for differentials. Sometimes could be a little too quick but just ask him where you're confused and he'll go over it. As long as you try and treat it like a normal NJIT math course, you'll be good. He shows care to students, especially if you show participation.
I kid you not I did not understand one word from him the entire time I was in his class. I relied mainly on notes that he posted and YouTube videos to pass the class. He is very caring and lenient with homework and is overall a great guy. Just wish his accent wasn't so hard to understand.
He isnt that good at explaining the actual topics, but he throws enough practice problems that you will learn how to do them even if you dont fully understand the topic. Heavy accent and does not give any time for questions.
all of the exams, quizzesm and hw are standard for everyone taking the class... the professor is hard to understand and exceptionally bad at teaching. although he is easy to get a hold of via email. i had to teach myself everything..
Short Answer Exams, hard quizzes every week, speeds through material. If you have discrete, do not take him. Discrete was suppose to be easy and based off of zybooks but his quizzes and exams are based off of his lecture examples which even he gets wrong sometimes. Pay attention to lecture to pass.
The guy has a very heavy accent. Most of the time he won't understand your questions. He loves HWs and Quizzes. He will give u about 10 quizzes and may drop 1. exams are heavy. I won't recommend him.
It takes a while for you to understand his accent but afterward he is the best Diffy teacher at NJIT. He gives a bunch of examples, answers emails whenever, and goes over material the other professors skim through or ignore (that stuff is on the exams).
Follow-along Examples on the board are more important than his lectures due to his accent. Show-your-work quizzes and exams. Reachable through email, but not immediately. Uses textbook problems, NOT ZyBooks problems. Prepare before class, use databases if unreachable, ask simply formed questions so he can understand you. Unrecommended.
Took him in winter. His accent was hard to understand but after you get past that he is a pretty good professor. He gave daily quizzes which were questions from the last lecture so If you paid attention you'd pass.
Goes fast as hell, no hw summer session which would be good and easy practice but no. Math debt overall bad. Very tough grader quizzes curveball. Accent is not good for how fast he speaks. Skips a ton of the algebra. Gives to do questions for new types of problems in lesson.
Extremely professional and cares about his students' success. Will give you lots of practice problems. Writes out questions step by step on the board, no PowerPoints. Weekly quizzes but it's questions from lectures. His accent is not difficult to understand and he's always willing to help if you ask. He also walks around the classroom to help too.
He does a bunch of practice problems during lecture, and he will always explain anything if anyone has a question. He also lets you try some problems in class and he walks around to see if anyone has any questions. There are quizzes once a week. He's very nice and cares for you to do well.
By far the best math professor I have ever had. You just need to get past his accent and pay attention and you will do just fine in the class. He gives over more than enough examples of problems and does not just teach the concept through proofs.
He was nice and seemed like he cared about his students doing well, however he goes over the material quite quickly. Doesn't slow down and has heavy accent which can be hard to understand at times, especially when he also is very softspoken. Don't sit at the back of the class. Overall not a bad professor, you just need to pay close attention.
Mixed feelings about him. His lectures weren't too bad, but I also feel he made things a bit inaccessible. He (or whoever was his TA) never really graded the homework. Also, be warned, everything's on paper here. It would be better if he spoke louder, gave actual feedback, and was more tech fluent.
took his course over the summer for calc 3B. it was good. just come prepared to his lectures so you don't feel lost.
Ratnaswamy really made this course unbearable and difficult. No grades are posted on canvas, tests have no resemblance from lectures, and lecture is fast and unbearable. The worst part is there would be questions on exam that no one answers correctly and he just doesn't care. He shows many times that he doesn't know the topics in the first place!
Lectures were good, straight to the point. Office hours were helpful to get ready for exams.
His lectures were great and covered numerous problems. He would always ask if anyone had any questions, office hours were available, and he gave out his phone number. His quizzes were not tricky and accurately assessed how well we understood the topics. He prepares his students well for exams and the final; he is a fantastic professor.
Amazing Prof. I studied calculus in my high school but never really understood even a single chapter. I thought calculus would be my nightmare. Guess what? Mr. Ratnaswamy, the legend himself. Just one tip: give full attention the first 10 mins of his class when he is teaching the concepts and then enjoy the rest. He cares your participation.
Ratnaswamy covers a lot of practice problems rather than reading through slides. His quizzes may be tough, but they are the same problems he goes over in class.
He's very straight forward. He first explains how to approach a problem and then gives students a few mins to solve each example. He goes around to help and then goes over it collectively. Attendance is definitely mandatory as he memorizes every one of his students. He is very caring and as long as you're working hard, you won't have a problem.
he lacks basic comprehension skills, so communication with him is unbearable. avoid at all cost
Extremely hard to understand or communicate with.
Explains concepts in depth and gives a lot of examples in class which is great prep for the tough commons for that class however he is hard to understand sometimes.
Professor Jeyakumaran is very straightforward and engaging. He provides plenty of examples and is always willing to help. While his accent can be challenging at times, using Unstuck ai for study prep really helped me grasp the concepts. Overall, a great class if you stay focused.
