First off he lets you call him Jhevon. He emails you copies of the homeworks from the textbook so you don't have to buy it. You must pay attention in class and take notes. A quiz is given every week and he sends a progress report to you each week as well. I highly reccommend him!! BTW: He also makes jokes in his emails and you'll enjoy his class
You should definitely take him! You won't regret it. He gives a quiz every tuesday or thursday. He is extremely helpful. You wont even need the textbook because he will photocopy the pages and sent you in an email. But, you will definitely need to study. You cant slack off.Great Professor overall!:))
he is an awesome professor he is very very very helpfull he gives you so many chances to get a good grade...hes a fair grader excet when yu dont follow his "math rules" lol hes awesome
Very helpful professor and goes out of his way for his students. All professors should be like him.
GREAT PROF and cares about students and sends out progress reports, 1st time teaching 392 and a graet job
He is a young professor. He seems to be tough in the class room. He likes to prepare a lot for students. Basically he likes to see student succeed. He is alavialble most of the time outside the class room. Basically, we like his class. He know what he is teaching. He is excellent
AWESOME!!!! He goes out of his way to help students!!! He's really smart and somewhat patriarchal. May come off as sarcastic at Times but he will definitely help u if u ask!! TAKE HIM! He's one of my top 5 favorite professors. You always know how well you're doing! You have no choice but to keep up, he makes it interesting. :)
challenges U with lots of Hwk and gives quizzes quite often but its for your own good Exams are tuff but he gave bonus questions. Goes out of his way to help w/ a real passion for the subject You can email him with question and he will get back to you, you can see him in the tutoring lab helping students. He is not easy but he will help you succeed
Best teacher I have ever found
Amazing professor. Available outside of class to help students. Knows the material well and very enthusiastic about math. Calls math his happy place! Gives very detailed notes so the textbook is only needed for hw. Take his class, you will learn the math for sure!
This professor is terrible. He doesn't care for students who need help. Even though he's a tutor in the math lab he assumes you know everything already. He takes points off your quizzes for no reason. One of the worst professor in CCNY.
Terrible professor. Removes points for NO REASON!! If you can take another professor please do. He's just useless. Not funny.
clearest teacher evr. videos of the class are on youtube. search for calc203+name and judge for yourself. he is crystal clear and answers all questions posed to him. he sits at the tutoring center every day waiting for students to come in and only been 4 of us there consistently. obviously disgruntled neither rewatches the videos or is at tutoring.
He teaches clearly,he takes homework every day, but he doesn't really check them. He is very friendly in class and helps out inside the class. His questions are between easy and average. He doesn't really gives partial credit, but he puts at least 15 points bonus questions. If you study, take this guy, you will not regret.
you really have to study, so your homework and read ahead. he gives bonus quest at the end of exams so reading ahead will boost up your grade. no partial credit on quizzes which are worth a lot so study so you get answers right! class is no joke and either is him. he expects you to understand things right away which i didn't like. good prof, study!
I liked that he always told us what was exactly in the next test, the final was great, he explained well. I think I didn't study hard enough for his class
Really an overall excellent professor. Understands the material well and gives over that understanding clearly. Gives a lot of work, but it all pays off when it comes to testing. Gives heads up before the tests, clearly explains what you need to know. Also offers free tutoring through the school. Overall, great teacher.
Definitely the best, he's funny, cool and helpful and crystal clear!!! Just got my grade and said I did pretty good on my final, it was a tough course but jhevon made it fun and applicable
HE the real MVP!!!
First things first he's the realist
He is a great one.Collects homework everyday, but doesn't really check. His questions are pretty easy if you understand the material and he gives bonus questions. He also gives quiz often with bonus questions. I got a A at the end, but he gave me an A+ because he thought i deserved it.
Since this was a summer course, we only had seven weeks to learn mulitvariable calculus. And yet, Jhevon still did an amazing job. Jhevon is concise and had clear expectations of the flow of the course. Very helpful, has online videos, and although not easy, definitely worth taking. He drops the lowest exam out of four and gives weekly quizzes.
Jhevon is no joke. You will learn a lot in his class. He is very cool & nice, but doesn't give partial credit, & can be strict when grading. It is imperative that you read ahead, as he gives extra credit questions on the following topic. We had 4 exams and he dropped one. He curved in the end! Recommend him, but it won't be a walk in the park!
He is really good. I got an A in the class
Worse summer class ever. The dude didn't teach us anything for matlab or for lecture. Spent 4 weeks on vectors and partial derivatives , 5 days on triple integrals a d 3 days on the e tire series chap. Very disorganized. Takes 90% of the credit for arithmetic mistakes. Half the class got a 0 for exam 4 for canceling across sums. GPA killer!
If he's going to be teaching your class, rejoice! Gave 4 exams, dropped one. He puts extra credit on exams from material in the next chapter, so READ AHEAD and STUDY! Writes a lot of notes on the board. He records his lectures with a video camera and uploads them to YouTube. Will make you laugh (you should read his exam instructions) TAKE THIS GUY!
Not a particularly great professor, but not bad, forces students to keep up with weekly pop quizzes. What bothers me more than the quizzes is the stupid way he has the homework system set up. Math wasn't meant to be done staring at a computer screen, Mr. Smith. I spend more time entering my answers on Wiley than I do actually studying the material.
More professors should be like Jhevon and record their lecture. He is a tough grader and his test are tough but he does it because he wants to prepare you for the final. Jhevon if you are reading this i want you to know "u da real MVP" your recordings saved my life.
take the time to come to class and to attend study sessions if you need help. He is very thorough though so help will probably not be needed!
Awesome lecturer and extremely nice. Very helpful and posts videos on youtube so that you can review what you did in class. If you put in work and effort, he WILL see it and makes sure you get the grade you deserve. Do your homework and STUDY! Drops your lowest exam grade. I got A's on all exam, but got a B- on the final. Still received an A.
Really tough professor, takes attendance, assigns weekly homework and gives difficult quizzes & exams. You WILL know the material cold, but it's always frustrating to work really hard for a B. Diff Eq is a difficult course and taking Jhevon doesn't make it any easier. Great teacher though.
He is a great professor. He gives at least one quiz every week(about 10 or so). There are 3 exams and a finals. If you score an 80% on the first exam, then he will drop the lowest. He is a really tough grader and the questions on his exams are hard. He also gives extra credit on tests from future topics so read on!
As a teacher, he is good. Provides A LOT of examples to help students understand a lesson. You'll end up with at least 7+ pages of notes at the end of every class. Studying is necessary. However, he does not follow his own syllabus. He will grade you based upon how he FEELS you are doing. As a result, I failed his class. Extremely unfair.
Tries to be funny in class. A good teacher, but sometimes the subject matter is too hard and he continues because there is just no time. Would recommend taking him if your are taking a 200 level math class or less, but hard to explain stuff when it is 300+ level class. Still a great teacher and great guy though.
The one math professor who actually wants his students to understand math theories and concepts! You will have to put effort to get an A in his class, but in the end it is veeery worth it! Would take again.
Great professor. I'm taking MATH 209 with Prof. Moser which is horrible & you have to teach yourself everything but watching Jhevon Smith MAT 209 videos is saving me in my 209 class. I don't know how his exams are but his teaches very clear compared to the other "HORRIBLE" CCNY math professors. So if you have the chance take this guy
He is the best math professor in CCNY. his lectures are long but really interesting and clear. once you take notes and do all the homework then you will pass his class with ease , get a good grade. his lecture will make all hard questions easier because he will explain everything in most clear way. he will be your best choice for math classes .
Prof. Smith is one of the kind. He is a tough professor and grader but if effort is actually put into his concept he will train you to be the best there ever is !
Jhevon is probably one of the best professors in CCNY!. I didn't get the grade i wanted in this class but i can say with 100% truth that he will prepare you for the final and his exams are fair,But his quizzes are a bit tough(no partial credit). And watch his videos ahead of time !He has videos from previous classes , use them to get ahead in class
Having him as a professor was one of the best experiences I ever had in math. He's there for you when you need it. Everything you need is available online: past final exams, test prep questions, answers to quizzes and tests. If you put in the time and effort to study for this class, it really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.
Jhevon is an extremely difficult grader, he will take a lot of points off for the smallest mistake. seriously on a 20 point question, All the equations were correct, the steps were correct but the while simplifying the final answer i made a mistake, he only gave me 3 points for the problem. Moral of the story, don't simplify. His test are DIFFICULT
Best math professor here at CCNY! Very clear in his lectures. They're recorded and posted on YouTube which is very helpful if you happen to miss class. I love the fact that I knew my standing in the class because Jhevon generously payed for jupitergrades. Difficult class but not impossible to pass. BEWARE OF WEEKLY QUIZZES! They will kill you x.x
a tough teacher I would recommend always being ahead of his class in order to pass so you wont feel confused copying notes in class. Its better to listen than to copy notes first. you can copy notes at home because all his lectures are online on youtube. He takes attendance. If you get an A on the final you get an A in the class no matter what.
very clear on lecture. helpful anytime you ask for help.
This is probably one of the worst math professors I've ever came across. He only helps students when he feels like it . Also if you are lucky and he decides to help you he will insult you. When he talks to you he's condescending and acts as if he is better than anyone else in city college. I would never take this professor. Good luck to others!
He expects you to know everything from the textbook like you were the writer. Exams are hard as hell. I got A- on calc 3, and this was supposed to be easier than calc 3( in my opinion) but he makes it way harder. Watch his videos on youtube it's really helpful but don't ever think about taking his class.
He taught Math 34600 for the first time in the spring 16. His exams were hard and he is a very tough grader. At end of the semester majority of the students got Ds and Fs. So be careful. He assigns lots of homework. Study ahead to do well in the quiz.
The guy is a condescending, know-it-all, who assumes everyone in his class is a mathematically expert. Doesn't give partial credit for anything - in addition, to removing large scale points for minor mistakes. Treats students with lower grades like subhumans. Don't miss a class, he'll take it personally. Value your self esteem or GPA? AVOID!!!
if you commit mistakes known as "blasphemy" auto failure on exam. Don't be alarmed, they're rarely committed by students. Very concise + clear lectures. Records lectures-accessible on YouTube. quiz every week; HW is collected + Attendance is mandatory. Will ace if you pay attention + are prepared. extra credit given on exam for future class content
Jhevon is a nice guy who really knows how to teach, But his exams are really tough and he is a tough grader. He uses this online grading system that lets you know where you are in his class but he never updated it until the end of the semester. Overall he knows how to teach but if you have the option to take another prof, do it!
Extremely tough grader. Gives no partial credit for anything.
He teaches his lessons quickly. It's like he is running a marathon and competing with himself. One useful thing is that he records his lectures, and he will drop your lowest grade for the exam. Other than that he is not lenient, he thinks everything is easy. He doesn't give enough time in class to solve a problem.
I want to be fair on this. He's probably one of the very few math prof thats actually good. HOWEVER. He's not lenient, his expectations for students are to high. Very stingy on partial points and he's not as friendly as he seems on the outside. The tutoring sucks and he doesn't really tutor you. He records lectures but his pace is WAY to fast.
All of the comments here are wrong. I am taking him now, calc 205. Awesome guy. You gotta ask for help? He'll help you. I was so afraid of math before but you just gotta work hard. You'll LEARN in this class. You reap what you sow!
BEST MATH PROFESSOR EVER!!! 1) THERE ARE SOME POP QUIZ ONCE WEEK, 4 TESTS(TWO BEST ONES) AND ONE FINAL. ALL THE VIDEOS ARE ON HIS YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND HE IS FUNNY SOMETIMES. HE ALSO HELPS DURING HIS FREE HOURS!
Easy to understand. Helpful...
Fast pace but it willing to explain small things you don't understand thoroughly. Gives bonus points on test and quizzes. Quizzes every week but they are mostly review of the previous lesson. Drops lowest score on quiz, test, & homework. Records lecture which is a GREAT! One of the best math teachers I've had, and that actually cares.
Very good professor :)
Jhevon is a good man--that is what I thought. the advantage of his lecture: 1,he creates concise and precise lecture notes that is helpful for you to solve your math problems. 2,he has a attractive voice. 3,he records all his cool lectures so you can go over more. 4,he gives extra credit for further section (I think it is not always).
Going to class is very important however he records all his lectures so you can go back and re-watch them while studying. He's at the tutoring center and available outside of class. In my opinion he's one, if not the best math professor at ccny! Cares about his students if they put in the effort. Beware of his weekly quizzes.
Jhevon is the best teacher I've had in City College so far. He likes to see improvement and he curves, I got an A in the class for improvement. Just like any other college course, you need to work for the grade that you want (unless you're a math genius) but Jhevon is really fair. Easy tests if you really pay attention to his lectures. DO THE WORK.
He's absolutely the worst professor on this planet. He's condescending, annoying, and difficult. He will refer you to test reviews, assuring you that if you finish it flawlessly, it'll be reflected in your grade. IT DOES NOT. HIS TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD. EVEN THE FINALS ARE EASY IN COMPARISON. But the final is less than the in-test percentage.
Hes a really tough grader and I feel like he doesnt try to help but just criticize you on not passing his exams or understanding the problem. Theres a quiz at the beginning of every class and the exams are really difficult. I would not recommend him if you want a B or higher. Definitely wouldnt take this class again!!
Excellent professor, explain everything with details and many different examples. I dropped this class because pre-calculus was hard for me, MATH IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY. Gives a lot of homework, pop-quizzes every week. Gives excellent feedback and meets with each student to create plans to improve their learning objectives. He has high hopes for all.
He is a good math teacher of yours even though a lot of in-class quizzes and exams will be tough.
Okay, this guy could teach and his lecture is useful. Buttt quiz every week and very very tough grading. He loves to take off small points and they add up. On the exam are usually one or two questions that you will be surprised, so make sure you do a lot of practice before exam.
Jesus... he can teach. For the love of all that is holy, please do not take this class if you are prone to making silly mistakes. Because you will not pass. However, if you're confident in your ability, if you take him, you will learn, and you will learn to be careful.
Bless his almighty soul.
great lectures, he expects you to be prepared for class with a quiz every Tuesday; quizzes with extra credits: quizzes are on everything covered in the previous week no surprises, extra credits are stuff on what will be covered this week, basically rewards people who read ahead. if you study for class and not being lazy, you will get a good grade
He's the best !!!! - that's all I had to say!
He is EXTREMELY clear and fair. Closely follows the book; his lectures are really organized (writes the formal stuff, then breaks it down informally, then does examples). he also records his lectures. a lot of profs in this school dont prioritize teaching and halfass their lectures, but he doesnt. he curves, but tests are hard, so do not slack off
One of the worst professor that I ever took. Stay away from him if you want a good grade. He teaches you to learn the topic, not pass in the exam. He sounds like he cares about the student. But he doesn't. He made the final hard, And don't curve.
Jhevon is a great person and professor, BUT his class structure is NOT designed for you to pass it is designed for you to be perfect. So if you really like challenges and you're willing to risk your GPA, risk failing, or even risk dropping the class go ahead, but it is YOUR funeral! & if he's the only available option then........ Good luck!!
He is no joke. You will fail his class or barely pass. I can guarantee it. He teaches fast. The way he teaches is for you to fail because he teaches based on examples of the book and tells you to practice department finals. But his exams are MORE challenging than what YOU practiced. However, after you failed his class you will be a better student.
BEYOND AMAZING. took him for Calc.1 and I don't regret it. He records his lectures and uploads them on Youtube, which's perfect. He gives a quiz every week based on previous two classes, you could literally get a 100 on these quizzes if you memorize the formulas that he boxes and if you practice. 2 exams 30% and a final 40%. QZ on the 1st day
Jhevon is not the best math professor that I had. Sometimes his lectures go off topic and teaches extra information that is not needed for this class. There was 10 quizzes and 2 test and a final.
Jhevon is a great lecturer and actually mentions real world applications of the math he teaches. The material may be a bit tough but he does his best to guide you through it and where the ideas come from. He gives quizzes every week that you need to study for but there were no surprises and everything on the quiz he mentioned in class.
Took him for Calc 1 and 2. He's a great prof. , tried his best to teach from a distance and used different methods to help us. He was handling the covid situation very well and curved our grades. He wanted to prevent cheating so he used an online proctoring service. Overall, a good prof. I recommend him.
He does not curve any grades. He is the most hardest teacher you will ever take in your life. The only thing that's good about him are his notes and his notes only. Do not recommend this professor under any circumstances!
You need to study very hard and need to work in order to do good on his class. His quizzes and tests are so hard and he does not curve. Do not take him for the sake of your grade.
Very crazy class. I did not mind his lectures however his teaching is awful. Does good on notes however very hard to pass since nothing on the quiz is covered on his lectures. If you would like to experiment him, take him but bare in mind that you would get a bad grade. I was one of the few students who passed his class.
Honestly, he's tough. I won't deny that but he made me love math. I worked hard to improve and he rewarded me for that. He truly wants his students to be the best and his lectures were always a good time. I wish I had him for all of my math classes tbh. I'd be a beast at math if I did. A true gem. Take him if you want to learn.
Jhevon is a good teacher, that's evident. He's a little pompous and tries to be funny, it never turns out well. He doesn't give extra credit on the quizzes, so if you get half of the question right, it's automatically wrong. Make sure you pay attention throughout the year, since he explains things well. His tests are like the reviews he gives.
Great professor. Uploads lectures to Youtube and in case people want to see the slides of the lecture as well as the notes/material, they can access to YouTube to see it. Very awesome. Also, the quiz and exam questions including the style and format that Jhevon Smith gives are not as bad as what other professor gives and they are actually doable.
