This is the first time she's taught this class and, while she is capable of discussing topics, her English can be confusing, so I cut some slack, but she failed to teach a lot of topics in an understandable way and made some seemingly nasty comments about regrades/students overall. Also, she doesn't curve exams. Watch the AATC videos to survive.
This was Wei's first quarter teaching, so I tried cutting her some slack but when her students were slammed with insanely confusing homework and midterms that seemed unfair, it's hard to give her credit. I do think she has the potential to be a good professor, but I hope she listens to students in the future as most almost failed her class...
What the hell was that final. Jayson Tatum.
It's her first quarter teaching OChem and she does not curve AT ALL. I will probably have to retake the class depending on the final average. Most of the questions on the final were not focused in lecture most of the time. Since the beginning of the quarter, she had MT 2 Curve % on Canvas bust changed it RIGHT after we took it. AVOID.
worst class ever, midterm and final problems were nothing like the practice problems went over in class. Ze's lectures barely made sense and I taught myself everything
AVOID! Professor doesn't curve midterms. Dr. Wei had her Canvas page stating a MT2 Curve % since the beginning of the quarter but it went away AFTER the exam. Final was hard and not reflective of the lectures AT ALL. The TAs are great but the professor doesn't make the class worth it. If you care for your grade don't take her course.
Problems sets were copied from other professors and hard. Midterms were a weird mixture of questions from the textbook and Prof. Lievens. Best of all, no curves! She seems nice in lecture but the class feels disorganized. TAs responded faster than the professor and make the class better. But it's not a great experience at all.
This is Wei's first time teaching and was originally a head TA for 118A. The midterms weren't that bad, but no curves. For her midterms and quizzes, you are allowed to bring and use a note card. I wanted to give her 2 stars but that final was just horrendous. It was like her midterms on steroids. Don't think about making a comeback on her Final.
I understand this is her first time teaching, but it was genuinely a bad experience. There were barely any practice material given out, and most of the keys had at least 2-3 errors. Her final exam did not reflect our course whatsoever. The fact that there was no exam curve is also kind of insane. I hope she gained some experience for the future.
She has fill in the blank notes that look nothing like the material on the final or the exams. Classes are spent filling in the blank instead of practicing and teaching which was not useful to learn the information at all. She does not curve and hands exams from other professors without teaching the same material as them. Overall a insanely bad.
first year of teaching, uploaded practice from lievens. first midterm light and second okay, final absolute curve ball. not sure if she is curving. recommend using all the resources you can (aatc, ta office hours, lievens material). notes are fill in the blank and contain easy examples, so hard to practice material without using outside resources
Wei uses fill-in-the-blank notes and provides a lot of resources in terms of material, however, her tests do not reflect what was taught in class at all!! The midterms were primarily from Nasiri and Lievens' past exams and not her own. The final was malevolent. I primarily taught myself using Organic chemistry videos. She also doesn't curve!!
I signed up for 118A with Lievens at first, but the prof changed to Wei last minute. Ze provides lecture notes that go along with each lecture, but zir teaching was confusing to follow along. Attendance not mandatory; lectures recorded. I pretty much used Ochem tutor to learn everything. The final was absolutely diabolical. Praying for a fat curve.
Diabolical final exam. Ze did a SN2 backside attack on my GPA.
She does not provide any of her own practice exams that are cruital for success in chem. In office hours, she doesn't solve problems on the board & just talk through them at you. Note format is filling in blanks, she doesn't explain chemical theories behind them. Final was extremely unfair, never thought I would say this but even farahat is better
I understand it's her first time teaching and that English is not her first language, but she's very disorganized and harsh on grading. She also relies on lievens and nasiri's materials way too much, basically copied and paste the entire homework and midterms from it with no adjustments, including things we've never talked about in class…
Nasiri 2.0
5% would retake. 4.4 difficulty. 3 midterms that were 2 hard, 1 star review.
Her class was a nucleophile, it attacked, and I was the leaving group. I wish to be eliminated after that final
Was a TA for Nasiri and became another Nasiri. Awful at teaching. Material did not match exams whatsoever. Avoid her at all cost to save your gpa. Most importantly, PLEASE I BEG YOU UC DAVIS DO NOT TENURE HER!!!
The final was significantly more difficult than the lecture material, with unexpected curveballs including content she did NOT teach. D avg on 2nd midterm, and mentioned multiple times she will not curve it, later admitting in office hours that she doesn't know how to. Former Nasiri TA…enough said.
what was that final lol
She was unnecessarily apathetic toward students. She held extremely high expectations without any curve or resources to study for midterms. She created no materials and suggested we use past exams that didn't reflect hers. Exams were mostly textbook problems, and she never clarified which to study. I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy.
Very uncaring attitude towards students, and it's reflected in her exams. Midterm 2 and the final both had material that was either not introduced or barely covered by the lectures. Also refused to curve mt 2 despite the average being a D.
Let me be clear, Dr. Wei is probably a great human being, but MY GOODNESS was this class terrible. She was apathetic and dismissive. Her inability to provide a thorough and clear explanation on ANY topic was most seen and felt with the difficulty of the tests and homework- which failed to reflect the bulk of what was presented in class.
TERRIBLE! Literally used an AATC workshop pdf to teach the class. It's her first quarter teaching OC and she does not curve AT ALL. THE FINAL EXAM was DOO DOO, basically tested us on stuff we didn't learn.
............
gave us 21 mechanisms that we had to know. then gave a completely random mechanism on the final that was quite literally impossible. how tf do you even go from a primary alcohol cyclopentane to a cyclohexane with a methyl and a bromine WHAT DA FAWKKKKKKKK
Started fine but turned into a disaster. Average was an D by exam 2 and she wouldn't curve. Even then, I managed to have an A— only because I was relying on AATC. The final was basically all free response mechanisms for problems she barley went over. I kid you not I do not think I scored above a 30 percent even with doing fine up till that point.
What was the point of teaching us 21 mechanisms and the SN1/SN2/E1 table if that wasn't focused on in the final. Not even the notecard could has saved us. AATC is the only resource you can really rely on for this class. TAs are amazing but the Dr. Wei needs to be more considerate of her students. She made negative statements about curves (D Ave.).
Wei is skilled in her field but lacks effective teaching. She rarely looks up from her iPad during lectures & leaves questions unanswered. Unpredictable tests, inconsistent grading, & no uniformity. Regardless of being a first-year teacher, it is unjustifiable for so many students to be set back due to her poor execution and lack of communication.
Jiahui was tricky. Not ze best.
I think some individuals are being a bit unfair for this. She did her best, she tries a lot and even records her OH and flashcard making. She is a kind person and I wouldn't 100% avoid taking her at all costs. She was a previous student of CHE118 series and tried her best to teach it the way she liked to learn. But it didn't help for us.
She lectures with fill-in notes and acts like we already know the material. We don't. Midterms and final are filled with questions never. seen. before. AND only on material mentioned once in a lecture randomly on a side note that was never directly emphasized or ever mentioned again. Also there are no real resources that reflect her tests at all.
Uses fill in the blank notes that were extremely easy compared to the actual exams/mechanisms. 2 Midterms (refuses to curve despite the avg of M2 being a D). Everyone agreed that the final was not a fair representation of what she taught (very hard). Does not have her own materials. She just posts Nasiri's and Lieven's past materials.
只因你太美
she should consider quitting teaching and stick to doing research, what she is actually better at.
I am sure Dr.Wei is a good person, but she really needs to reconsider her approach to teaching. Her lecture notes sometimes have no similarity to problem set or exam questions, with the final being the most unexpected and mind boggling part of this course. She doesn't provide enough resources and her way of explaining things just doesn't work AVOID
I have no clue how its possible to get an A in this class. The first couple of midterms were ok - some questions were super specific but nothing awful. The final was just horrendous - it felt like it was from a completely different class. The reactions were like nothing we've seen from the midterms/practice. Really bad faith on her part.
Her lecture notes were not easy to follow--I would have rather just made my own notes. She didn't spend any time doing practice problems or doing examples during lectures. She would only fill in the blanks on the lecture "notes" she gave us. The final was absolutely terrible and she refuses to curve.
Spent hours teaching myself the content because the fill in the blank lecture style is a joke. The final was extremely difficult and was supposed to be "accumulative" but had no questions from m1 and m2 content just the new stuff. Waste of my time. Che 118a will be seeing me again next quarter.
My worst experience at Davis so far was in this class. I studied for two weeks in advance for this final and I was still unable to answer questions. There was nothing more I could've done. Wei is not a good lecturer and her notes emphasize one thing while her exams are covered on something entirely different. Avoid at all costs.
Please DO NOT take Wei. 4 problem sets, 10 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. The problem sets (besides the last one) and first midterm wasn't that bad, leading me to think she would be decent...WRONG. I know for a fact many failed that final, and it likely won't have that significant of a curve. She CANNOT teach. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
People say Professor Wei's class is fair, but that's far from true. The first midterm was easy enough to keep students from dropping. The second exam was worse. Her answer key had over five mistakes. The final was a disaster. No amount of studying or resources helped. I had an A, but now I'm not even sure I'll leave with a C.
Studied day and night for this class. I did well on the first and second midterms, but the final was a disaster. If you emailed the professor, there was no reply. Only one TA responded quickly; the others took 2-3 days. This class was a nightmare. I signed up to take Professor Lievens, not her, but I guess that's just my luck.
People are excessively critical of her. If you reach out to her and her TA's and get clarification regarding topics, you'll do decent in her class. Allowed notecards on both midterms and half a sheet of paper on the final, making it more than fair for students who aren't great at memorization. Tough but fair, just expect to study outside of class.
Genuinely the most difficult professor here at UC Davis. Lectures were no help, homework's were no help, and midterms were gradually more difficult each time as it only reflected things that she has never taught us. Don't even get me started with the final, cause it was honestly straight up gibberish. She also emphasizes heavily on no curve.
Helpful in giving tips for what worked for her when taking 118 series, but teaching wasn't very effective. Fill in the blank notes with little concept explanations. MTs were fine (77 & 69 avg), final was not (47 avg). Fat curve at the end (~83 and up was an A). Usually walked out of lectures confused. AATC, TAs and Dr. Lievens videos saved me.
I don't think people are being fair in their reviews. She is NOWHERE near as bad as Nasiri was, don't let anyone here fool you. Lectures had fill in the blank notes, which can be hard to follow if you write on paper. Super tough final, but curved very generously at the end. Take advantage of all the practice material she gives and you'll be fine.
worst. professor. ever. she has passion yes. but teaching is poor. she cannot teach. she simply cannot. not the language barrier, simply what we learn is more complex in exams, everything is self learn & best bet to pass is to do really good on quizzes.
I thought she was an ok professor until the final exam. She barely prepared us for the exam and put mostly new material on it. The class average was 47% on the final exam and I feel like she did not curve enough considering how everyone did on it. Lectures were just her filling in notes, not really explaining the meaning behind concepts very well.
No matter who you take OCHEM with the class will be hard and you will have to memorize a lot. Wei's 2 midterms are easy and fairly straightforward (the final was hard however) but if you study hard enough an A is possible. Wei is a good teacher who tries to give the best for her students. Its their first semester—cut her some slack.
Her second midterm and final were hard ESPECIALLY the final, it was very difficult, unfairly so. Midterms werent curved but at the end of the class she did decide to curve the whole class and her final curve was not horrible. Her lecture notes are really simple and not accurate to the exams, and none of her own practice material.
Prof. doesn't focus on teaching conceptual understanding which is mainly why everyone does so poorly in her class. Lecture notes lack so much information that are basically useless for exams besides mechanisms. Ochem is not as difficult as it is made out to be, but her class makes it so unnecessarily difficult with unfair exams & poor explanations.
Yes she's difficult. but she understands, and did her best at end, and curved well with finals. its her first time teaching, im sure she'll do better and learn from all this. if you have her, try her out, every prof has a hard time in the beginning, so be considerate.
The final was very hard but the class was curved very generously! Dr. Wei is a very organized lecturer w a clear passion for chem, & a fill in the blank lecture style. However you must use outside resources (AATC) to learn, and other profs practice tests since she doesn't have her own. Hard to know what to expect on tests inconsistent difficulty
I agree Dr. Wei is not a bad professor, and she tries hard to help her student understand the course material. However, she is not experienced and, overall, her class feels more like a TA session than a professor's lecture. Be prepared to grind over the textbook and read all notes carefully if you're taking her.
I think Dr. Wei cares about her students (recorded office hours + extra review videos). Midterms were fair (textbook and practice test questions) but her final was difficult. She doesn't really explain concepts more than once even in office hours, and she'll refer you to a video she made or lecture notes instead but her curve was generous.
DO NOT TAKE WEI. Everyone essentially failed midterm 2 and the final. Her lectures and exams do not even correlate. She refused to reply to my email regarding my final grade and she never replied to her emails during the quarter. She is a horrible lecturer. Never raises her head from the iPad, she is filling the blanks on for her notes.
She is a good professor who explains most things clear enough for me. Some people may feel bored to fill in the blanks with her during the lecture, but I found those notes really helpful. Her quizzes and two midterms are very straightforward despite having a hard final. Last but not least, she will curve if needed, so do not worry about failing!
I wouldn't take Wei ever. I am limited to 350 but I could go on. Ochem is hard & she didn't make it any easier. I've used Klein for this entire class & I learned more from that than any of her lectures. DON'T take her, if you don't want a mental breakdown in mid-quarter. Please SPARE yourselves b/c you aren't seeing anything u learn in person.
Dr. Wei is a kind person that tried to provide as many resources as possible for success. However, midterm 2 and the final were extremely difficult. She talks through concepts rather than explaining them, and little to no practice problems during lectures. Curve at the end of the class was generous. Don't take Wei if you can't self study.
DO NOT TAKE. Wei is a terrible professor. You'd think because it is her first time she'd be more lenient, but she is not. She is incompetent. The only way I managed to do decent in this class is with the help of AATC. Please avoid if you can, and if you can't I wish you the best of luck. You will need it.
Professor Wei will be teaching General Chemistry next quarter, and if you're looking to dislike chemistry from the start, consider taking her class. Even students who earned A's have complained about her teaching style and course structure. Many find it difficult to follow, so be prepared! Worst professor ever
One of the more stressful academic quarters of my life and I owe a lot of it to this class. Midterms were not curved, no matter how hard they were. Content on exams was never anything ze made, so anything covered in zir lectures was rendered useless. Only the final was curved. Like many reviews say, a lack of empathy. Avoid if possible.
Half her lectures were color coding and the other half was her talking about future classes. Even with all that, her notes weren't easy to follow, and watching the recordings did not help because she is a horrible lecturer.
For her first time it wasn't a bad class but hot damn the final was really hard. Definitely could have gotten an A in the class if the final was more doable but overall she was an okay teacher
Decent professor, but not the greatest. Was her first qtr here, so she definitely has things to improve on. You definitely have to practice a lot (which is very true for ochem in general). Midterms got progressively harder, partially due to the nature of the content but also because she places a heavier emphasis on rxns/mechs. Final was a hot mess.
Novice but caring professor. Dr. Wei's fill-in-the-blank notes arent for everyone, but I found carefully studying her notes a VERY good way to narrow down what she wants us to learn. Lots of practice problems in OH (recorded!). Midterms were fair, final had some tricky questions. Said she wouldn't curve all quarter but ended up curving generously.
For her first quarter of teaching she had mistakes. Her notes were fill in the blank but she did express what she wanted us to know for midterms. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS, half of those problems were word for word on the test. Final was really hard but there was a curve. Her website is a great resource. O-chem is a hard course but wasn't that bad.
Surprised to see this low rate. Her teaching style isn't for everyone, but she cares for the students and tries her best to explain everything. She even records her office hours, which I found pretty useful. Her midterms were straightforward all from her lectures and the practice tests. Even though we had a rough final, she did a generous curve.
Professor Wei really tried her best. She offered many outside resources, but said there wouldn't be a curve until actually putting in the final grades- which was VERY STRESSFUL. Almost exclusively self taught but that's also bc her class was 8am. She's so sweet but I wouldn't take her class again, esp with that abysmally hard final
中国人不骗中国人,快逃:)
I TOOK IT FOR CHEM2A, and i would say i learned everything by myself so far. she ran through topics really fast, didn't go deep into it (not really explaining), expected you to know what is going on. the only good thing is the midterm is similar to practice problems, but other than that, nah
If you are okay with teaching yourself the material completely on your own then take this class. Understandably her first language isn't English, but understanding her at times was extremely difficult. Her lectures were difficult to follow if you do not have an iPad because she uses fill in notes. TA's carried this class.
What was mainly hard for this class was that her tests were nothing like the lectures. She used fill in the blank for her notes, but then pulled straight from Enderle's practice exams for the midterms. By the second midterm, I learned I just needed to memorize Enderle's exams in order to pass. It's also hard to understand her.
AWFUL. I had her fall 2024 and initially was supposed to have Lievens until 2 weeks before the quarter we she was switched for Wei. Her course was, to me, a complete disaster. Lectures consisted of filling-the-blank notes which we copied during class. Her HWs were impossible, I spent hours in OH to no avail. Hardest final I've ever taken. AVOID.
The worst professor ever. The TAs had so much attitude for no reason it seemed like doing their job was a burden to them. Avoid taking Wei at all costs
Get ready to teach yourself the material because lectures are not helpful at all. Barely passed the second midterm by memorizing the enderle practice exams since they were copied and pasted.
Had to self-teach myself most of the material, she wasn't thorough in explaining concepts and instead just filled in blanks on her notes and just expected us to know what she was doing. I do think she tried her best and she is a caring person it's just her teaching methods dont work, she also doesn't post curves/grades until finals are graded.
She takes all her material from Enderle's Reader but doesn't teach it as well. Doesn't explain the context behind topics so I had to self-study with Enderle's Reader. Colored coded notes (which I don't mind) but did way too much. Doing the HW is helpful. Grades are disabled until after finals so you don't know your grade for the whole quarter.
Going to a lecture is a waste of time you could have spend studying. In lecture she goes over Enderle's textbook and doesn't elaborate. I got through this class by studying the owl textbook on my own. Overall, bad teacher who cannot explain topics in an understandable way. Midterms are copy/paste of the Enderle's practice exams, STUDY THOSE!
Lectures were useless—I went for the first two weeks then stopped since it was just copying fill-in-the-blank notes. Midterms reused old Enderle exams. The one time she added a new question to the 2nd midterm, it was incorrect so we all got full credit. The final wasn't reused (shared across all chem professors), so I think everyone did badly.
Her teaching style is full in the blank notes which is good for math aspects of chem. But for fundamentals and principles you would have to go out of your way and study for those. Midterms were practice exams so as long as you study those you can do good. Final is different so study hard for that one. Passionate but still things to fix on her end.
Thick accent and inexperienced teaching style made lectures useless. I used AATC co-classes and Enderle content. Her two midterms were copies of Enderle ones. Final was hard but not as difficult as Enderle material so grinding questions helped a lot. If you are confident in your self-study skills, take her for a good curve. If not, look elsewhere.
Totally unprofessional and lacking empathy toward her students. She doesn't want her students to get a good grade.
The lectures made me more confused then if I hadn't have gone. You can tell this was her first time teaching this course as her note style made topics more confusing then it had to be. Had to stop atteneding lectures and reverted to just watching YouTube viedeos on the topics and atteneding the co classes.. VERY strong curve however.
Dr. Wei was funny and nice enough, but her teaching was poor. In lectures she never explained the concepts, only did practice problems and never said what she was doing or why. I usually left more confused than I came in. Didn't post any grades or curve info until the very end so you had no idea what grade to expect. Slow to respond on Piazza.
Wei is inexperienced, needs more lecture practice, and to figure out what works and what doesn't. However, she does seem to care for her students and wants people to do well. I was lucky enough to have a good TA. Self-teach through Enderle's reader is pretty necessary, and do a bunch of his practice exams to prepare for the midterms.
Had no idea what she was talking about the whole quarter. sweet but chem was not my strong suit in the first place and learning everything myself was not fun. If u don't understand her, skip lecture, self teach and do hw, for midterms LITERALLY memorize a lot of enderle's practice exams(what I should've been doing since the beginning)
Dr. Wei seems like a pretty good person, she showed us that she cared about how we did in the course, but she does not know how to teach a class effectively AT ALL. She would continually backtrack and skip around, making it nearly impossible to stay with her during lecture, and she in general did not explain things in a remotely clear way. AVOID.
If you've taken a chemistry course outside of this class, it definitely helps, but Prof. Wei definitely does not fare very well in lectures. If you don't have much knowledge beforehand, it will get confusing, and her accent does not help. Midterms are literally copies of Enderle test material, so please grind those out. Her first quarter was ok.
She just isn't that great at actually teaching material. Having an I-pad to take notes is almost a necessity because she spends all lecture just filling in answers to questions from a pdf document, which is hard to keep up with if you are handwriting everything.
i think wei is a nice person, i just feel i didn't learn anything in lecture. i even watched the videos beforehand but i always ended up confused. she kind of just does the problem without explaining it well. i wasn't even sure that i passed but the curve saved me. depend on enderle's material, please!
She never responded to a single email, she doesn't post grades until right before the final so you have no idea how you're doing, doesn't curve ANYTHING until after the final (though it was a very generous curve, I believe almost 10%). Her lectures were near impossible to understand and her TAs treated us like a burden.
Dr. Wei knows her stuff, but it's hard to say I learned a lot during lecture as they were hard to follow most of the time. If you want a good grade, do not rely on lecture. Use the Enderle practice exams to your advantage. Exams are based on those practice exams, and 82% of your grade is from exams. The curve is good though, 80% = A, 40% = C.
She was not ready to teach students.
Though Wei is inexperienced, you cal tell she is a caring professor. Her lectures are hard to follow, but she has fill in notes that some students may find helpful and records her lectures. All her exams are similar to past Enderle exams and all the material is taught based off Endlerle's reader. Self studying is a MUST with her.
Wei is a caring professor who does care about the success of her students. However, her lectures and explanations can be disorganized, and there are instances where she assumes that you know most of the information. For exams, they are similar to the practice exams as she takes most of her questions from them.
she cares about her students but was not ready to teach. her lectures were unclear and disorganized and she cared more about color coding instead of the actual content. most of her exams came from enderles reader so rely on that for exams.
who hired her? there's no doubt that she is smart, but she is not good at teaching, not at all.
Stopped going to lecture after a few weeks and only attended Co-Class. Lectures were unclear and didn't help. All her exams were taken directly from the previous quarter taught by Enderlee (she only changes the numbers). I would avoid at all costs. I barley made it out of there.
Professor Wei is very kind, but I struggled heavy in her class do to lecture not covering the full content and the exams being extremely hard. It is hard to follow her in lecture and I got confused often. I would not recommend taking her her unless you are very good at chemistry. Also, her class did have a huge curve so that help a lot.
One of the most difficult professors I've had at UC Davis. Her teaching style was unclear, and it often felt like she wasn't able to explain concepts effectively. It was also discouraging when she responded rudely to questions, which made it harder to engage in class.
The TAs were unhelpful and often came across as rude or condescending. It felt like they forgot what it was like to be a student, and instead of offering support, they decided to use Google answers during office hours. It didn't feel like they were prepared to assist us or genuinely interested in helping.
Dr. Wei is very kind in office hours, but I didn't like her lecture style. She often just wrote numbers down on examples without clear explanations and cared more about color coding than teaching. She recycled all of Enderle's test from the practice reader so be sure to crank as many out as many times as possible before tests.
One of the most challenging professors I've had at UC Davis. Very knowledgeable, but not an effective teacher. Lectures were hard to follow, exams were extremely difficult, and her notes focused more on appearance than clarity. Also, she rarely responded to emails.
Pros: Organized notes, sets up lecture files before class and 1 hour after class for you to review, midterms/final are similar to the practice exams offered Cons: Not clear very often, uses the Enderle reader a lot more than the textbook, you mostly teach yourself the concepts and how to solve
Worst professor at Davis. Has no experience. Avoid at her at all cost. Just run away!
Honestly, she is so sweet and nice, but that isnt enough for me to raise my rating. Her lectures aren't lectures, you dont learn anything in class. All learning must be done by you on your own time. I was taking 19 units at the time, so this was the worst. Be prepared to teach yourself. The material is tough, and she doesnt make it any easier.
Very difficult class as someone who didn't take AP Chem/had little knowledge of chem. However, because everyone else did bad, there was a VERY generous curve. I (raw score) probably failed the 2 midterms + final but still managed to pass with a C. I HATE HATE HATE chem but not Dr. Wei because at least I passed.
Prof has Ochem background but is teaching gen chem. Friendly and warm, but has a hard time getting ideas across in words that make sense. If you are an auditory learner or need things to be explained to you, lectures are not helpful at all. Tests Qs are pulled directly from Enderle's prx. Unresponsive to emails, maybe she's too busy.
Her lectures honestly suck. She can't get the concepts across as well as the coclass, or if you read the textbook on your own. But, I do like the structure of her lecture and her lecture notes. She bases everything on Enderle's Reader. The midterms are practically carbon copies of the practice exams, so that's honestly all I've needed for studying.
Dr. Wei really isn't so bad. I failed my first exam but after focusing I ended up with a B. CHE2A is designed to weed out those who aren't serious and I think as long as you actually try, Wei is a perfectly fine professor. She clearly has a passion for chem and cares for her students. Practice exams are super similar to the actual midterms!!!
Her rating is a complete exaggeration. When I saw it before taking her I was terrified, she is not bad at all. Not the best, she's new. But Dr Wei is actually very caring would bring demos to lectures and exams are very straightforward. Pretty much IDENTICAL to practice exams. Don't be afraid to take her, she is good. And very very organized.
Took 118a fq24, wei's 1st quarter. Lectures hard to understand, esp when she zoomed out right after writing smt. Not the best at explaining. Notecards allowed in weekly dis quizzes and both mts. 118a content is difficult, start w stuff from 2c then 1 mech, then 3 more, then after mt2 you get two weeks to learn a dozen more rxns... Final was awful
Class is not hard only if you focus on Mariya Jones Vids. I thought the midterm was very similar to practice. Her final(way harder) had stuff that she never covered, but Jones did. Her lectures are worthless. Half the time she's writing stuff you can't see. Just grind Mariya Jones(she's goated). Wei's getting better as a teacher, but not good yet
Her lectures need improvement but her exams are predictable. She bases them HEAVILY on Enderle's and copies her practice exams for the midterms. She gave a reasonable amount of weekly homework and her office hours were recorded and helpful. STUDY those practice exams and Enderle's stuff and you should be okay. (I barely went to class, and I passed)
The professor is okay when it comes to the material and the understanding over the material, but when it come to quizzing and exams, she has no chill. Final sucks. I think if you only know synthesis and nothing else you'll get a 90% on the final.
NGL self taught all quarter, was not the greatest lecturer, only filled in premade notes that were already available on canvas. Took during SS1 and 1 MT 1 Final (30&44%) MT straightforward with practice, final was the biggest curveball I've ever been thrown, quizzes are easy, but graded on so little things. Expect to self teach a lot outside class.
Organized lectures, many practice exams/quizzes available, many resources, cares about students. Lots of studying outside, but manageable. Don't slack off and you're good tbh, bad reviews here are exaggerating. Easy hw and dis quiz. notecards for exams/dis quiz. Has many vids from previous OH for faq. this is coming from some1 who took it during ss1!
I honestly don't get why people dog on her so much -- I've failed this class twice with other professors, but she's the only one I've ever really been able to understand the material with. Ochem is a hard af class, but follow her lectures from the BLANK notes, participate in discussion, and you'll be fine. Final was harder than expected though.
Honestly, Wei is a sweetie. I thought she lectured very clearly, despite the content being very difficult. Her lectures had concise info which made it easy to study, and she was kind to answer questions after & outside of class. Tests were hard, so you definitely have to work/study to understand, but overall good lectures and she wants u to succeed
I don't understand why her rating is so low... Organic chemistry is a tough course for sure, but she truly cares about students doing well and will work with you as long as you communicate with her. She is also quick to respond to emails. Her lectures are great and her use of colors is very helpful with my adhd.
Honestly, I've had my fair share of bad professors in the chemistry department, and Professor Wei wasn't even close. Overall, OChem is a tough subject, but Professor Wei has SO MANY resources to help and is more than willing to help. Don't worry about ratings; I was worried, but I came to enjoy my time with Wei. Do as much practice andtheFLASHCARDS
lievens worse than her do with that what u will
It's so hard to understand what she's saying in class and where she is going with the lesson. Most of the time, she relies on other professors' work to teach in her class.
Bad at explaining not very supportive
It is a inspiration how bad her lectures are. All of her lectures are based around one or two practice problems with no legitimate teaching of concepts. She frequently says "If you don't understand this then drop my class" and "If you don't understand then ask your 'smart neighbor'". Avoid her section at all costs. I have never seen a worse teacher
Had her FQ'24. MTs were rough but she gave out lots of resources/recorded OH vids that went over everything. Be sure to do lots of problems in the AATC Folder/Drop-In and watch those vids. Overall she was ok for her first time teaching.
As a person she is kind and knowledgeable. As someone who had little experience of chem going into her class is definitely not worth taking her if you have too, better off waiting another quarter. Be ready for self study, her accent is heavy, teaching style is not the best either (overcomplicates the easy stuff and makes it harder to understand).
Professor Wei was not a good lecturer, I generally benefitted more from independent study than attending lectures which would confuse me more. Her midterms had questions directly copy and pasted from the practice test, no numbers changed. I vouch for the other reviews noting her color coding. Heavy test curve.
Didn't go to a single lecture all quarter. She just does practice problems (tho not very helpful) and doesn't actually teach. Atleast she's nice but thats lowkey not enough. Just copies off Enderle, had to teach myself for the most part by reading Enderles Reader.
DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES, SHE NEVER TEACHES, BASICLY JUST TEACHING MYSELF THE WHOLE QUARTER. TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS IN LECTURES AND QUIZES.
No teaching at all. Go ask your smart neighbors.
Her lectures are nightmares.
The only thing amazing about her lectures is how spectacularly bad they were. She frequently jumps between topics for no real reason and heavily relies on work already done by other professors here. My biggest advice if you have to take her class like I did, DONT go to lecture just watch lectures posted by Dr. Enderle so you can learn the content.
If you're taking Wei, be prepared to self-study for the entire course. She's a kind professor whose accessible outside of class, but she is terrible at lecturing. You will be able to succeed in exams by studying the Enderle Reader and watching videos without attending lectures. Her midterms are copy and pastes of Enderle's Practice
It was so bad I hated chem for ten years.
Bruh don't even bother going to lecture unless you wanna take notes. Just print the Enderle reader and do practice problems. Literally the same stuff on tests. She seems nice, but don't learn a lot in lecture. It's chem- hard tests ofc.
many disliked her but she is not that bad; she is pretty new to teaching so sometimes her lectures are a little unorganized but theyre recorded. Chemistry is mostly self-learning so I did not find it too bad because i just watched her lecture and did hw and practice exams (which were very similar to the actual midterms given) and it was all good
Not sure why she teaches gen chem when she is much more passionate about ochem. Pretty bad at explaining concepts, jumps from concept to concept during lecture making it hard to follow. Bases her exams + class purely off of Enderle's reader. Way too worried about color coding. Pretty much self taught.
you might as well never go to a single lecture they are that bad. Her microphone is awful and cuts out every couple seconds. At every single lecture she just turns it off and holds a hand-held one instead. This combined with her heavy accent and constantly shifting topics into irrelevant stuff make it impossible to understand anything.
fun lectures
Professor Wei seems like a genuinely good person, but good person doesn't help when learning chemistry. I think her way of teaching not effective to many so in reality you're just there to take tests on self studied chem topics. She often didn't answer questions and only covered the surface level of the topic with one example. She is organized tho.
this professor is absolutely horrible and needs to be fired asap. she doesn't even teach and rushes through content without even explaining what the heck she's doing, and she cares more about her dumb color coding than actually teaching. she would also continuously make rude comments "if this doesnt make sense then drop the class" like bro r we fr
she needs to get fired and never teach again, she's the absolute worst and can't teach for the life of her. she cares more abt color coding than actually explaining what she's doing. being in her class during my first quarter as a freshman made me feel so discouraged and unmotivated. whatever u do js NEVER EVER take her for ANY class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quickly became apparent that attending lectures was useless. The entire course is essentially self-study with Enderle's reader and lecture videos. Also, grades are pretty ambiguous for the entire quarter because she doesn't show letter grades, so students have no way of seeing where they stand in the class. Needs a lot more teaching experience.
If you value your sanity, you won't even go to her lectures and you'll self study the "enderle reader" at home because that's basically what she does in class but much more disorganized. Her lectures are confusing but tests were pretty straight forward (if you do the "reader" practice exams). If taking her, you'll be fine if you can self teach.
Her lectures are pointless and she cares more about providing useless examples of o-chem than actually focusing on necessary ones. Grades are locked entire quarter and midterm averages horrible (~40-50%). I know she is new to teaching but I think it isn't really her thing. Enderle's reader has been my ride or die (thank you king)
Don't take her class. DROP IMMEDIATLY. I haven't gone to or watched a single lecture since day one bc they're so buns. You have to self study from the textbook and practice for exams based on Enderle's materials. She doesn't show grades or give an idea of what the overall curve will look like so you have no idea where you stand in the class.
My second time taking Wei. (got an A in 2B with her). Class isn't a death sentence as long as you have discipline self studying. If you need a good lecturer who will teach you, this isn't the right class for you. First MT exam was poorly written and impossible to finish, but she did have a more fair second midterm. I've heard she's nice and funny.
Not a good professor at all, cannot teach and literally spends half the lecture telling us how she is going to use colored this and that. Her midterms were like Enderle exams, 1st one was impossible, 2nd was better. Going into the final nervous but hoping for a curve. Avoid her if you want to keep your sanity, she really should not be teaching.
This class left me wanting to die every time I look at anything chemistry related. Lectures are so awful it is actually unimaginable, you are left off so much worse than before. If you can teach yourself all of the content you might be okay. Otherwise AVOID.
honestly just so terrible. didn't really go to lecture after week 1 bc she doesn't explain anything at all. felt continually confused and lost whenever I did go. choose any other prof if you can or just wait another quarter to avoid her.
professor wei is pretty much what everyone else on here has said. the lectures are awful, it doesn't even matter if you go or not. mic cuts out every few seconds. i think her favorite phrase is "go ask your smart neighbor." i will say she is pretty funny and seems like a genuinely sweet person, but not a very good professor at all.
Seems like a sweet professor, but that simply does not make up for her ability to teach. Seriously, I don't know what'd she teach if Enderle's reader did not exist. Going to lectures felt pointless, which resulted in almost empty lecture halls. Avoid if you can. Midterm 1 was almost impossible to finish in a 50 minute time frame.
If you're looking for a sign to believe all the reviews and not take her class. This is it. HORRIBLE lectures and she isn't prepared for them. Without her notes on the side, she gets lost on a problem on the first step. Too busy worrying abt color coding. Takes all her stuff from Enderle. Never enough time on tests and they are so long.
i tried so so so hard to pass and I studied so hard but she made it IMPOSSIBLE, her notes dont make sense and the online materials dont make sense without watching vids and the vids never match whats on the tests. DO NOT TAKE WEI. I genuinely thought if i worked hard I would be fine but she proved that some professors are just evil.
Heavy emphasis on Dr.Wei using Enderle Reader to structure her lectures and exams. You'll do decently good if you do a A LOT of self-teaching and practice exams from Enderle. But other than that if you expect to actually learn from her you won't get much of that. I highly recommend going through the Enderle reader before class. AVOID if possible.
someone buy her a working mic because thats the reason why i skipped all the lectures. shout out my goat jace. he was an amazing TA and explained everything in one discussion class that wei couldn't in 3 lectures.
Dr. Wei is very new to UC Davis, and it was very evident to see that throughout the quarter. Without taking AP Chemistry, success in this class is very difficult, but possible with much self-studying. Often copied another professor's notes as hers. Midterms however, are extremely similar to practice exams. If possible, avoid and take another prof.
Honestly, Wei seems like a super nice lady who wants all her students to succeed. With that said, her lectures are just simply ineffective. Her accent and mic quality make it extremely difficult to understand the subject without a lot of self studying. I want to give her a higher rating but can't, wouldn't take again, curve is massive though!
Prof. Wei is super nice and chill. But her lectures are disorganized and don't cover the material well. I relied solely on Enderle's material to teach myself the content. Her exams are either a hit or miss, since her lectures aren't cohesive and clear. Her curve is usually good though, since the exam averages are low.
Dr. Wei is a sweet person, but is not a good professor in any sense. If you wish to do well in this class, you will have to self-study the Enderle reader or textbook. Most people do terribly in her class, with the only saving grace being her generous curve at the end. Her exams are also bad, with 2/3 having major errors and low averages.
Horrible teacher and great practicer. Does plenty of probs that appear on exams no explaination. Key to Success: E's reader/YT channel BEFORE lecture (she does warn us), lots of OWL practice problems, and ask questions in discussion. Don't bother with with textbook or going to lecture unless you already understand the concepts she goes over.
Wei gets far more hate than she deserves. Personally, between Hayashi and her, I'd take Wei any day. She's very caring towards her students and while she sometimes makes calculation errors, she explains her process clearly which helps. She records problems in her office hours and is easy to talk to. Her curves are also typically pretty good!!
You dont really learn anything from her lectures and she spends half the lesson trying to fix her microphone. Nobody really understands what she says either. She gives u the resources to do well tho so only choose her if ur willing to self-teach the entire quarter, because her lectures are completely useless.
Wrote another review about her bad teaching which still stands but I wanted to make another review noting how insane her curve was. I got a 77% raw in her class and that curved to an A. First A I've ever gotten in a Chem class. Exams had low averages, with the final being a 49%. Use Enderle material and you can lowkey be ok with her curve ngl.
bad lecturer but yall aren't going to chem lecture either way. there are enough reviews here for you to know to rely on enderle's materials, thats really all you need to do to succeed--like seriously i once only aced multiple choice because she cited enderles almost exactly.
Had her for 2A, she improved a lot. Read enderle and go to her lectures and it's okay (she'll tell you stuff in lecture that's important for exam content etc). My grade was decent until the final which was made by her and farahat. Just do the readings she tells you to in the announcements for context bc her lecture is mostly practice problems
Extremely organized and gives plenty of resources, Wei doesn't always go super in-depth on content during lecture, but office hours are helpful and CHE2A is just a heavy course in general. She could improve if she explained difficult concepts thoroughly/better and made easier tests.
I had her for CHE2A and it's like she got worse at teaching (specifically her notes lagged behind and aren't even helpful). She's super sweet and her outfits eat down but class is just her solving the problem in front of you for an excessive amount of time without teaching the fundamentals of what's happening. I'm sorry Chinese sister.
She doesn't teach. You must read the textbook and take your own notes in order to pass. Lectures are optional. She goes over practice problems in lecture, no teaching. There are 2 midterms and 1 final. She cannot teach chemistry to save her life. Good luck if you have to take her.
She has a heavy East Asian accent, making lectures difficult to understand sometimes, but you learn to understand it. Lecture notes weren't very in-depth, and my TA really helped me with more in-depth lessons during discussion. Exams were inconsistent. Barely anyone finished midterm 1, but she felt bad for that and made up for it in midterm 2.
