dont understand a word of his accent

He doesn't know what's math

useless
About 100 registered, 15 where actually coming to class, I and still wonder why...
Avoid. Hard to understand, unclear notes, makes many errors in class. Examples are very theoretical, focuses on proofs a lot. I ended up switching sections.
one piece of advice: go to TA sessions and do the problem sets again and again and again... until you either give up hons alltogether or get it. good luck (you ll need it!)
mid term average for PDE 45%...he's unclear, makes alot of mistakes, horrible accent, if the material is difficult or the book not good don't take his class
hard to understand his english if u arent chinese, but very systematic and clear notes. knows his stuff well.
So very hard to understand during lecture. Don't even bother going to class, learn out of the book and you'll be fine.
Don't bother asking him about the exams. Always tells you to practice as many of the problems in the book as possible, review the lecture notes, etc. Why can't he just be like other teachers and tell us the format of the exam!!!
I strongly urge you not to take his classes. Try all other methods. Wait for another semester, take it during summer school... Unless he changes for the better significantly for next semester!
A really good prof, it's true his accent is very heavy, but he gives excellent notes if you take the time to read them afterwards. I did hear people cry during the final, they probably tried to study from the textbook, which admittedly was bad.
His accent is very heavy while in class and it may be hard to understand but he's very up front about what he's putting on his tests. Tough and long assignments, hard midterm but ok final. Very helpful in his office. Class notes are pretty good.
Guy is an a****le! Yells at students for nothing. Goes ino long complicated analysis proofs 2 days before final telling us to know it. For a Cal 1 class, too hard. AVOID!!!

Luckily, Differential Equations is a so-so class, its supposed to be easy. He makes it difficult. Couldn't understand a thing he said through the first 5 weeks of class. Survived and got an 'A' cause of a good TA.
I couldn't understand anything in class and his lecture notes are filled with complicated proofs. He is very nice, smart and hot, however, and just this kept me going to class. If you are already a math whiz you'll enjoy this class, if not, go for something else.
I dunno what the other person is talking about, if you like 50 year man with thick glasses then I guess he is pretty hot. Anyways, do not take this professor, I got an A- and I learned nothing. I can't understand his accent nor his notes (lots of mistakes), had to learn everything from the textbook.

I feel like my other profs are gods when compared to this guy....and he ain't hot...he went off in class in chinese for 5 minutes...he has a very very heavy accent and mumbles a lot, so there's no way ur gonna understand what he's saying...i just study on my own for this $%^& class.

This guy totally sucks... He can't speak english.. it is as if he just got deported here. I do not know why he is teaching this class. Luckily the book is great and you can make it without him and his complicated notes. DO NOT GO SEE HIM FOR HELP.. He'll yell at you!! seriously
AVOID!!! Just absolutely horrendous. Take summer classes, just do anything to avoid this guy. Bad doesn't even begin to describe how awful he is. You can't understand him and he just reads his notes. Class is worthless. Buy a Schaum's guide to save yourself. It's the only way to do well.
I don't think he's that horrible! The notes and textbook are very helpful, and I believe he curved up the final grades a lot....very helpful during office hours. Although for those who has a real interest in math, I suggest you do 325,in which you also learn where the theorems come from besides only how to use them
He's a really nice guy, but his classes are pretty boring. you gotta be ready to put in some work to do decently. I found his accent really entertaining actually! oh and if you go to see him at his office, try hard not to act too clueless, cuz that'll upset him.
I'm sure even Bozo the Clown can teach this course better than Xu. He uses SLIDES to teach maths, which is pretty much a good way to get lost in the lectures. He is unclear, and listening to him demands way too much effort. People that like this guy must be math nerds and bond with him or something.
He is SO BORING and unhelpful that i found this class difficult for just that reason. i'm glad some find his accent entertaining, but i couldn't understand a damn thing.
if you like to laugh at chinese accents, take him. but thats all ull get. hes terrible!!
cant understand a word he says!!! stay away from him!!! so unhelpful and not clear...
Just a bad prof. Cannot teach. Teaches MATH off of a PDF DOCUMENT. Gets lost on the board. The accent wouldnt have bothered me if he was a good prof, but it just makes it worse... AVOID IF POSSIBLE
Worst teacher ever. The fact that he provides you with the notes does not help. If you want to pass this class: PRINT out the assignments, bring them to class and try to work on them in class (it will keep you focused on the material instead of sleeping or skipping like the vast majority of my peers).
Entertaining and funny guy, but the good part stops here. Do not make the mistake of listening to him; it is a waste of time. Go to class, but do the stuff on your own. You will do well if you work a lot by yourself, and read the book. Oh, and when you ask him a question he will yell at you as if you just insulted him.
Is there an oral exam for professor to be teach ?
Be prepared to do a lot of work on your own. His lectures are not much more than him reading his slides, though he will basically tell you what will be on the exam if you go to class. Slides are dense but complete. Check out old exams on MUSE.
Horrible, horrible prof who
Wow, this is the best teacher I ever got. Funniest, not understandable guy. But, at least his lecture notes are clear.
Obviously a really smart guy, but just shouldnt be teaching calc 1. go to class, but dont ask him questions, or he'll laugh/yell at you. Go to the tutorial sessions!! and take advantage of the TA's office hours and the book, which isnt too hard to understand.
Worst Prof. I have ever had. It's better to teach yourself out of the textbook. I'm glad I never went to class and instead caught up on many many many hours of sleep!
Hahaha this has to be one of the funnest professors i've been taught by. I got by the course mainly on my textbook, but i still attended class just to witness this man's antics. Definitely a do-it-yourself class, but be sure to stop by once or twice to witness him get ruffled over an incompetent student.
If you take his class you'd better be good at independent learning because you won't be able to understand a thing he says. I think every class was a blur because he mumbled everything.
To be honest, I got used to his accent and I could understand him pretty well after the first week. I think most people have been too hard rating him. He was really nice and funny; he definitely made me learn calculus! He also believes in his students, at least from my experience when I asked for help.
Absolutely impossible to understand unless you're passive in Chinese. I had the assignment answers, whcih basically made me pass the course. I wish i could put him a NEGATIVE in: 'board-writing skills' and 'english-speaking skills' and 'overall teaching skills'. The book saved me. All in all, take him if you feel your GPA is too high/exagerrated

At the start of the course, his teaching is seemingly horrible. His accent is difficult to get too. But when the course starts picking up, you get used to his accent. And as long as you keep up by reading the textbook, you'll actually realize that everything he says makes sense. Very fair exam.
Bad bad, can't teach at all. Its not his english problem but his attitude. Doesn't care at all.
this guy can be described as a error in the market. can be diversified away, don't take him. no office hours, no tutorial, no TA. you're on your own. it'll take you about a month to get used to his accent. it seems like he is teaching as a sidejob and has more important things to do, ie. he leaves immediately after class. huge lovebite on his neck
One of the worst profs hands down. Does not seem to care about the student. Totally incomprehensible, arrogant and afraid to say not very bright. Very unclear about projects and never available during office hours. Has no TAs. Avoid at any cost. I still cant put together enough words to describe the extent to which he sucks at teaching.
Incomprehensible is the word to describe him. However, he's a nice prof. 263 is an easy class. He likes his students. However, don't ever ask a stupid question. Also don't even try asking him what he just wrote or to repeat something, because you'll be humiliated in the most funny way EVER! You don't need to take notes because he posts them online.
I've been to McGill for 3 years now, and he is by far the worst teacher I had. Not only are his notes and accent pretty terrible, but he doesn't follow the book and worst of all, if you ask him a question, he will straight up question your intelligence instead of answering your question. Grading is not fair either. Seriously, avoid.
Worst math prof I've had and I'm in math! Had an interest in this course, completely turned off now. Messy notation, berates you for asking questions. Assigns homework without notification, sometimes rife with typos. Refuses to explain WHY when discussing theory (3 days discussing linear independence without relevance to DEs, then BAM! 5 examples)
He's fun. He is the clearest math professor I've ever had in McGill. Everything he says makes perfect sense as long as you get used to his accent. Very nice guy but could be very mean if you ask him an easy or "stupid" question. Fair exam.
WRONSKIAN!
Just plain terrible, and contrarily to a few not so good math teachers at McGill, this prof is not helpful at all outside of class. In fact he's more of the type to try to insult you rather than help you if you don't understand something. Oh and doesn't follow class book at all, has his own method for doing things.
WOW! really bad teacher, don't ask questions or he will get pissed off for not understanding! I am not one to dislike a teacher for his accent, but this one is absolutely incomprehensible. Use Paul's Math Notes and go to tutorials to actually learn what to do for ODEs, or else be prepared to be completely lost
This guy can not be understood, and he uses his own book, which sucks, it has unfinished examples everywhere and he skips large chunks of math and essential definitions. Also he made the final way too long, completely different from post finals, and full of questions that we had never done before. He does not post your marks from assignments either
Simply stated, he is the worst professor I have ever had. He will yell at you if you ask him questions, claiming that you would know the answer had you been in class, but he is completely incomprehensible to start with. He refused to help me on fair questions several weeks before the final only to give us an exam that almost nobody could pass.
Horrible teacher, horrible notes, horrible exam. He should refund all students that have paid to take his class because he is not willing to actually dedicate his own time or personal effort to helping you learn anything. It blows my mind that McGill is keeping him around.
Going to class is useless. Unfair grading style. Easy material.
The material itself isn't too hard, and the midterm was a piece of cake. But the final was completely ludicrous and unfair and had almost nothing to do with what we learned in the course. Think you can escape Xu by taking the class with another professor? Nope! Xu makes the final exam regardless so 90% of the class will fail it.
The professor is really bad concerning the explanation, better not to go to class!
I learned all the material by myself! You won't understand anything from what he says, and get depressed every time you go to class! Horrible teacher! He is not even a teacher!
JJ xu is another level of awful. he is incomprehensible and is five seconds away from speaking chinese in any given class. His T.A.'s dont respect him and they readily admit he is an awful prof. use MIT OCW its far more helpful.
Tips for this class: 1) Don't go to class. Learn everything using Pauls notes/knan academy/the textbook. 2)Study hard for the midterm, it's a lot easier than the final and doing well will take a lot of pressure off. 3) If Xu posts the student numbers of the TAs (he did for us), there is a way to get all your webwork answers.
I didn't open my class notes ONCE for the midterm OR the final OR the assignments. The only reason I went to class was to know the material we covered so I could study using OTHER notes. Yes, I passed the course... with the help of other notes... The final was interesting. The good news is: yes he curves!
He was not helpful in class
??? that is what he sounded like in class and his writing on thhe board was even more unclear dont understand how this man is allowed to teach. only good part is that you can write anything and then put QED at the end of a proof and he will give you full marks. just dont go to class unless you want to pick up another language. ????????!
just dont. but if you have no choice, go to class from time to time to know what will be on the exam and expect to want to kill yourself.
Homework is difficult, not helpful at all.
He's a very nice guy and speaks very good English. His homework is fair and his exams also makes sense. Overall a fair prof. Haha.
Sometimes it almost seems like he doesnt want his students to do well.
He's the worst professor to ever live, full stop. He doesn't want his students to pass, let alone do well, and he is ridiculous to the n-th degree. He will make ODE be a horrible nightmare. Never, ever, ever attend his classes.
The material for this class is not difficult. However Xu made it as difficult as possible. So not helpful. I would not recommend taking this course with Xu.
The worst professor I have ever had. I have no idea why this man is still allowed to 'teach'. Gives 'trick' questions on the tests and exams where the tricks are providing wrong information. I think he derives pleasure from failing students..
I improved my Chinese quite a bit. Seems like he was creating his own words half of the time. You can write anything that looks mathish and he will give you your points since he doesn't care about whether or not you learn . Strongly recommend to avoid his class. The final was a mess, some people were crying at the end...
Talks to the board in some strange language that resembles Chinese but isn't while he scribbles nonsensical drivel in unknown abbreviations. Got a question? You'll be lucky if he hears you. If he understands you, I will find you and I will personally give you a medal. Textbook? His course notes. Verdict: you're on your own. PS exams are crazy.
If you go to lectures, you will become less knowledgeable from over-complication. Textbook is definitely a must for this course, along with an "English to Xu" dictionary. He is very theoretical. His exams are challenging, but not super hard. If you read the textbook and do and understand every single problem, you will do just fine...
best prof ever.
Having a class with JJ is a religious experience. His words will expand your mind and bring about a significant improvement in your life. This course allowed me to see the elegance in math. His exams are clear and reasonable. By a long shot the best professor I've had at Mcgill. You can tell that he truly cares about his students.
Disorganized, assignments are stupidly tough, cherry picked midterm, incomprehensible, does't know how to clearly convey material.
If nothing else, he is at least entertaining.
He's so mean and won't clarify (which is not great, seeing as he's still struggling with his English language skills). Basically learned everything from Paul's notes and the text book.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't speak with any proper mathematical lingo, can't read his own notes, will stop in the middle of a derivation because he can't remember the rest of it. Answers all question with "Come to office hours." , if he hears them. He was incorrect about whether or not we were allowed calculators on the midterm HE WROTE.
A class without JJ isn't a real class. He goes out of his way every day to educate students in the art of math. I jump out of bed three days a week because I know I have a JJ Xu lecture to get to. On top of being a great lecturer, he is always eager to answer questions thrown his way. Best Prof in McGill.
You are not an official McGill scienceengineering student if you haven't taken JJ. People call him Lord JJ for a reason: he is simply the best. His accent, his jokes, his exams all contribute to an infinite source of laughter.
Simply an amazing professor. Very approachable. Even though some people seem to have some problems with the way the course was run, don't let anything you read here discourage you from choosing to take one of his courses, which will most likely be eye-opening.
best. prof. ever. EVER.
he doesnt help but his notes are clear (but not crystal clear). his exam arent impossible the usual. move on.
Attending his class is just like being in heaven.
Absolutely brilliant, this man has inspired me in ways I did not think possible. I will forever be in his debt. A true genius, a true legend. JJ Xu is the epitome of excellent teaching, and his presence is greatly appreciated by all students.
Some of us failed the final, so we have to take the supplemental exam in a couple weeks. Xu said the supplemental would BE HARDER. Because WE FAILED IT THE FIRST TIME, we really need the supplemental to be HARDER. That's the kind of logic this man has. Avoid at all costs.
Avoid at all costs. If you couldnt already tell all the good responses are sarcastic af. Haven't taken this hard of a class every anywhere. His lectures are pointless. Never once turns his body towards the class, always looking at the board. Never stops writing to allow for questions. Wouldn't even be that bad, but his english is nonexistant.
A truly remarkable professor. Every time I entered the classroom, I was shivering with anticipation of the lecture. His various analogies not only made the material much easier to understand but also communicated his down-to-Earth nature, inspiring us. The differential equations may have been ordinary, but he was extraordinary.
Best prof at Mcgill so far ! I recommend this prof to all engineering students who want good grades in math !
Absolute worst teacher on the planet. He can't speak English(although what he does say is hilarious since it makes no sense), is a tough grader, has difficult exams and has horrendous notes. Unclear grading schemes. Worst. Don't do it. Just don't.
It's almost funny how bad of a teacher he is. Spends the class talking to the board. Attendance rate was about 12 students on a good day. His handwriting is borderline undecipherable, although his pdf notes are decent. Very very hard to understand his accent but midtermfinal very fair. You have to practice but don't bother with lectures.
Unfair midtermfinals, rediculous lectures, preach the textbook - iz your bible. I used to like math
Avoid or take his course just for fun! If you have to take a course with him, suck it up and don't ever defer your exam. I deferred mine and it was a big mistake. I read the whole textbook, understood it , did the regular exam, thought i was fine and I was wrong. The deferred exam is at least twice as hard as the regular one. lol
run forest run
JJ Xu as we call him is the worst math prof at McGill. No one can understand what the professor is saying. Midterm and written assignment due on eleciton day when administration emailed: "Professors and instructors are urged to avoid the scheduling of tests on October 19." Does he not think we have other classes?
They say if you haven't taken a class with Prof. Xu, you haven't done Engineering at McGill. Indeed, the infamous Lord JJ will push you to the utmost limits of sanity, as you frantically attempt to understand ANYTHING in lectures, sacrifice many hours to keep up with his blazing pace, then have everything you ever knew crushed by his ruthless exams
Really bad teacher, doesn't know how to explain anything. Smart guy, though grader. Avoid him if possible
Xu is the absolute worst. He is not clear in his explanations and of no help whatsoever if you ask him a question. Exams are tough. The questions were doable but all unnecessarily long.
Everyone should take JayJay as their first teacher at McGill University. His lectures will inspire you to discover the art of self-study and you will not fail a class ever again at McGill.
You really need to attend class and practice to do well in this course. I went to all lectures(2013 Fall) and we were 2-10 attending his lectures by the end of the term.
