He 'tried' to make us understand, but he failed. His midterms and finals are hard and not close to the assignment. Not much exercises are give for practice. We had no clue what was in the final or midterms.
He is a greate instructor. I give him 90 out of 100.
Easy assignment, easy exam, easy marker. Take him if you need an A.
Horrible prof, if you want to learn you're better off just reading the book. His assignment are hard and there are literally no exercises other than the assignment. He expects you to understand everything! Will not recommend taking his course unless you want a horrible mark
If you do his assignments, they are quite helpful for the midterms. He is not the world's best prof but he gets the job done. Also show up to class, some question on the midterm and final are not covered in the book in depth
If you really want to learn economics, you should take his class.
Horrible professor. So boring in his class. Sleepy every class. Also, messy notes on board :(( Never take his class ever !!!
Monotone, gets impatient, more than half the class dropped. No one answers his questions cause he's too ambiguous. He comes off socially awkward which is tolerable at first. If you take him, just try to read and work on your own.
Classes are a kind of boring, Hard explanation. But the assignments are very helpful. The teacher has a good personality and he understands students.
1st midterm was easy, second midterm was hard. final was very reasonable. You will know what will be on the final, he explained things multiple times. overall he is a good professor
Tough guy and gave us unclear lectures
Good teacher and is willing to explain things if you are having difficulty. Just make sure you come to the lectures to see how problems are done in real time.
If you do take his one of his classes (which I do not recommend), the first thing you will notice is his incredibly monotone voice. Every word you hear will sound exactly the same (not literally.) Doesn't care at all how you do in his class, but cares about your final mark only because how it will affect HIM not YOU. Basically, please don't.
I've taken a related class before and have a friend in the SAME subject but a different teacher, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. But unfortunately for me, Jian is an awful professor and complicates the hell out of the curriculum.
Jian has a poor method of delivery when it comes to teaching. You can tell that he has a lot of knowledge about the topic, yet he sets a high bar for his students. He mostly used variables instead of giving actual examples which made it tough for all. ATTEND CLASS! His tests is based off material in class! Use text as a guideline. Must work hard!
Very difficult and never uses number which only makes the material more difficult, lectures are boring and some questions on the exam were never covered in the textbook or in class. You need a good grasp pf algebra or you will not pass.
He knows his stuff, but is not very good at explaining the material for people to understand.
He is good. He known his stuff. Students in class do not engage. Otherwise, he tries his best to engage and raise questions and ask for answers. His exam are not too difficult.
Attend his class!!. He choses his words Wisely and if you listen, you will understand not only what is on the midterms but also the final. He is always willing to help the students during office hours . The material for econ is exatcly as what he says, it is like learning a new language. Practice will get you a good grade!!
He knows what he is teaching and is good at it. He uses good examples of the current economic state of the WorldCanada to make the theory make more sense. It takes some time for stuff to make sense, so hang in there. His exams are not easy but are mostly straight forward if you have done your job. Altogether, I learned much in his class.
Horrible lecturer! He thinks and speaks so slowly in class that I want to throw something. A good portion of the lectures were spent in awkward silence due to his slow thinking. His assignments were really long (he actually recommended working in groups) and worth barely anything. This guy just wasn't cut out to be a teacher.
The lecture notes are confusing, the tests are extremely hard and the assignments are barely worth anything. He is very unenthusiastic while teaching which makes his lectures extremely dull. He teaches this course at a very high level and has unrealistic expectations for his students. He is very unencouraging.. Avoid his class if you can!!!
He is knows the subjects and give practical examples. He teaches in a way they teach at universities. I took Micro at UBC and this class was compatible with that one. His exams might look hard, but at the end he is good with grading. If you go to his class, you will learn.
Jian is clearly knowledgeable in the field of Economics, but his teaching style is very questionable. Lectures are boring (to say the least) because of his monotone voice. Only attended 2 lectures in the entire semester because of this. Midterms are fairly easy, but beware of the final. Group assignment is super easy and can be done alone.
He is a good teacher. Unlike other instructors at Langara, he actually teaches, rather than reading from his notes. He has high expectations. It is a tough course though and needs considerable effort. Attend the class to see how he does things, otherwise almost impossible to learn on your own. Overall, I have learned from him.
Pretty intensive but emphasizes knowing HOW things work over memorizing formulae and such.
He is good at what he does. Tough course! Do not miss a class. Read in advance.
Learned a lot. When I hear news now, some things make more sense. Takes some serious effort to learn though.
Good class.
Jian is nice but he is sooooo boring. He doesn't give breaks and still keeps you right till the end of class or even goes over time. Oh and don't ask difficult questions because he will just get annoyed and tell you not to over think things (he just doesn't want to answer).
It has been only a few weeks into the course and have already learned a lot. He changes how you think. He is great, IMHO.
Well done, learned a lot.
Need to read all material and practice them. Things start to make more sense towards the end of the course.
9/10 people Failed the 2nd Midterm exam in macro... He tries to engage the class with Socrative to see how people are doing but other than that if you get tired at the end of the day and you have this class last I wouldn't want to take it. 20minutes into every lecture my eyes just want to fall asleep. Bring a pillow, prepare for Zzz
He is really knowledgeable, knows his material, an relates the content to real political and economic events or views in interesting ways. I did not get a good mark, since honestly did not try at it. But just sitting there in his class and listening, I learned interesting things about macroeconomics, economy, math, algebra, graphs, and more.
Jian is a great professor and I like his way of teaching. He wants us to fully understand concepts and reproduce it. In the 2nd Midterm, I'm pretty sure many failed, but there is a way to make up for it, and I am very SATISFIED with that method. If you're there to learn, you'll surely learn A LOT. Just don't skip classes and you shall catch up.
If you read each chapter of his student note that he give you on D2L, you'll be fine. if not? probably fail. He is a great teacher but does not care about those who do not study hard. Your efforts will be rewarded!!
Probably the most horrific professor that I have come across. Because of his passion for economics, he is very knowledgable in his field. However, this individual should not be teaching material to students as he clearly lacks a passion for teaching. That being said, the class was not too difficult if you study hard and put the work in.
He has a phd in economics, but he absolutely should not be in the teaching field. He doesn't know how to teach. If people don't understand he'll get frustrated or make it seem like everyone in the class is stupid. If he asks a question and no one responds he'll spend the next 5 minutes waiting for a response. Very condescending and goes too fast.
Enjoyed his classes; learned a lot about the economy (was interested in Economics to start with, but learned quite a lot from him). Most students in class are not interested and do not participate. I read some of the reviews below and am surprised how inaccurate and unfair they are. He tries hard in class, but the crowd is just suboptimal.
He explains the concepts during the lecture without sample questions which makes it hard to understand his lecture. Ninety percent of class failed the 2nd mid-term. But he is patient and available for office hours. You can ask questions! Just a reminder, please READ ur textbooks before coming into his class so that u won't get lost during lecture
Tough grader. Just make sure you've studied and remembered all materials Jian gives you on D2L, because he always emphasizes writing down your answers based on his note and the textbook.
prof is good as 15 Percent is cover with assignments in his class and that marks are easy to get
He is awesome. Learned a lot from his course. Was tough at first but got better and better with time. By the end of the course, I understood what was going on. The second section in his class is very important for your grade, do not miss classes after midterm one. Go to his office hour if you need help, as I did and he helped me a lot.
I enjoyed his course. He knows his stuff and is dedicated. He teaches really well. Overall, I totally recommend him.
Lectures are boring; not interactive. Bring water. Will assume you understand; you probably won't. However, explains the concepts very well. Must write down notes and draw what's on the board Most failed MT2; however, did not count MT2 for marks because of the failures Book only for reference DON'T SKIP HIS LECTURES AFTER MIDTERM
Today, learned things in class that blew my mind. I loved it. You should read in advance to understand what he says. Do not miss classes after midterm 1, you will not learn on your own. Lectures r heavy but if you ask questions, he spends time on to make sure you get your answer.
I really like his style of teaching. Had taken the same course at UBC. I learned a lot more in his class than at UBC. He explains things in ways that help you understand the reason behind everything. Takes some major efforts to learn though.
Warning! Warning! If you want to get a good credit of this course, don't pick this professor plz! It's very hard to pass this course by his class. His second midterm is the most difficult one that I have wrote in my langara history. His teaching is messy. If you want to graduate or transfer, don't pick him!
Just failed the 2nd midterm but will take his course again. He teaches really well. Honestly, I did not make much of an effort. He has inspired me to really learn. Wish had put more effort! To anyone taking his course: after the 1st midterm, do not skip classes and read in advance. Things accumulate fast, you miss one thing you miss the whole.
A real gem, highly skilled, teaches really well, goid person, and really helpful.
Awesome instructor and person!
Tough course, but learned quite a lot. Liked how he teaches. Do not miss classes after mid-term two, most of your mark depends on it. Go to his office hours, he is very helpful.
Just awesome!
He is a great professor, teaches really well, adds depth to concepts, is really helpful in office hours and in class, is cool, and is hilarious. I really learned macro from him!
Tough but fascinating! Would definitely take course wit him again.
One of the most difficult courses I have taken. He did a great job. Took me a while to figure things out. He teaches really well and is quite helpful in office hours.
Explains things in their simplest form. Takes time to make sure everyone understands so if you pay attention you should understand.
Not my favourite subject, but his lectures are as good as they get in econ. He posts slides online but attend the lectures if you want to do well in this course.
Just great!
Lectures are kind of heavy. Course content difficult but mangeable. He is quite helpful and gives good feedback. He does a reLly good job altogether. Good prof!
Worst PROF ever. Jian should not be a teacher. He is unwilling to help students on questions and doesnt provide examples in class. He will show the formula and expect you to be able to apply it.
Really enjoyed his class. Quite a helpful prof. To get a good mark: attend classes, read in advance, ask for help, and practice, practice, practice. Things start to make more sense after the second midterm.
Excellent prof, teaches tough thing really well. Learned a lot about macroecon, logic, graphs, reasoning, modelling and causation. He was very helpful and caring. Liked the part in class we used the macro model & talked politics of econ growth and learned histirically corporate tax cut deals never helped, as the GM and At&T proved recently.
I will say he is an excellent choice if you really want to understand macroeconomics. Teach really well, explain concepts clearly, you will find all the things are connected together after you go through the course. Pre-study is important, reading textbook is important, make sure you clearly understand all the concept.
Really enjoyed his class this last Fall. Read in advance. Go to his office hour if need help. Things start to make more sense closer to the end of the second section of class. He does a great job, is fun, and very knowledgeable.
So far, excellent! He is hilarious. Amazing lectures.
Says a whole lot of stuff but doesn't make a point. Very WORDY lectures and notes, which doesn't help with such a complicated course. I learned a lot more from youtube. The textbook explains things better but he goes into more detail beyond textbook which is confusing. Very frustrating. Nice man though.
He is very knowledgeable, kind & caring, hepful, and overall an excellent prof. He gave everyone a second chance to make the best out of the course for the final exam; quite generous of him. Learned a lot. Very nice person.
Well, after the second mid-term, I almost thought I got ruined, however, he gave us a final chance in the final exam: if you get more than 70%, all the grade you got in mid-term before won't be counted, which is the reason I recommend this course.
Best econ teacher i have had! He made everything really clear and easy to understand.
Three weeks into the course: a great professor, knows his stuff, is encouraging, is funny at times, is dedicated, quite informed about world affairs, uses math and graphs, covers news, is helpful and patient.
He is a nice guy, quite knowledgeable, and a good prof.
He is the best proff trust me
Great Prof!
My first time taking Macroeconomics and loved it.
Took his econ1221 last term. He is definitely one of the best profs I have had at Langara. Definitely recommend him to anyone.
Took his macro in summer '19. At first it was all very hard. At the end it was still very hard. But he magically helps you understand all of it. Matters a lot to keep practicing. Ask questions when too hard to understand. Spent a lot of time on learning this course. At the end, it all made sense. Now I actually what I learned quite interesting.
He makes basic concepts very complicated and can never provide concrete examples to back his claims. No exam prep, tells you to just read everything. Doesnt care if students do well, seems like he just wants to hear himself talk. Goes on about a topic but never makes a point. Only took him because the timing worked. Avoid.
He is awesome! We just had the first midterm. Very close to what he does in class. He gives good feedback and is quite supporting. Have no idea what the comments below are about (test heavy!) as we just did our first exam and no marks back as of yet!
Really good prof and quite helpful if you have a question.
Last class he blew my mind. I never thought I will learn anything that has math and graphs and things in it. But he made it happen. He is really good. Definitely recommend him.
Excellent prof!
Take his class if you want to fail. He is the perfect example of where just because you know a lot about a topic, doesn't mean you know how to teach it. He goes on about a topic and never makes a point. He will never show you questions in class with examples. All he teaches his own theory version of the course and you will be lost the entire sem.
His exams are nothing like the textbook or his lectures. You will feel lost throughout the entire course and even if you spend hours studying, you'll still fail. Gives you half the class to write the exam, and makes the exam super long. No one in our class finished. Take him if you want to pay to fail a course.
Love this course! He is good at his job. He gives excellent feedback and is really helpful. Of course you need to work for it.
Tough exam but he had hinted at what was to come in class. Two of the four questions was exactly what he said in class will be in the exam. He is quite helpful and like him lots.
Wow, he gives the whole class a second chance; very generous and caring.
Good person, knowledgeable in his stuff, caring, good feedback. Do not take if not willing to put effort.
Exams very close to what he does in class. He hints in class as to what is important and those were in exams. It is a tough course. He is good at it. Recommend!
He is a great teacher.
One of the bests at Langara!
Dont take , the worst teacher I ever had .Boring lecture.
The worst professor to opt for. Tells you dont need to attend lectures and then fails you for not attending. Bores in lectures too much and does not care if students are sleeping. No interactions at all. Exam comes out of nowhere. No slides or notes of d2l can help you to pass the exam. WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
Avoid taking. After first midterm, half of the class dropped out. After the second midterm, those who remained did very poorly. His lectures are very unclear, unorganized, and confusing. He gives a second chance in the final, but with his cluttered teaching method, it is still difficult! Seems like a nice guy though.
I used to feel like I do not understand anything. But later one, he gave me a comprehensive view about Macro. I studied a lot from him, even his teaching style was not matching to him. Thank you for making me put all efforts in this subject.
Really good, recommend him.
A good one!
He really knows what he teach. Helps you understand the details. Gives you a different way of looking at things. A really really perfect prof. Two thumbs up!
Awesome Prof! He is quite dedicated. He did a lot to make all of us feel calm and relaxed and be able to continue our learning through online/remote live classes and office hours plus remote/online exams during the COVID-19. He is very good at what he does and knows a lot. Quite helpful too. Thank you Mr. Mardukhi! Really enjoyed your class.
He is really passionate about economics - I think you will really learn lots about econ if you follow him from the start. I skipped way too many classes and was soo lost so I had to catch up on my own during the finals. Macroecon is not something you can cram in a weekend so if you take this class with him, make sure to follow along from the start!
my only complaint about him is that he told everyone at the start of the term that it was mandatory to buy myeconlab, which was around $50, but he never posted any assignments on there and actually did not recommend that we study off of it for tests
Perfect prof and really good person.
I highly recommend him.
He is really awesome.
jian is very knowledgable but isnt the greatest teacher because he will explain things in a very confusing way and uses terrible examples He rarely uses the class notes and everything he teaches is from his head and it becomes hard to follow along sometimes Most of the mark is from the final Although i thought he seemed nice and he smiled a lot.
Although his overall rating is decent, it is very deceiving. He likes to complicate concepts rather than simplify them, making alot of the material more confusing than it should be. If you don't answer the questions "his way" then you won't do great on tests. He seems like a decent guy who knows his stuff, but can't translate it into teaching.
Overall, I enjoyed his classes. What he teaches is difficult and took time for me to understand fully. Before the 2nd midterm I started to understand what was going on & realized why he gave so much depth at the begiining: confusing at first but made me understand much better later on. He knows his stuff. Review of news in class was very good too.
Jian is a decent teacher & really good at what he does. At least, I learned a lot. Some of the comments below are unfair! There are always losers giving bad comments instead of putting effort to improve. One said the prof made simple things too complicated, while their mark was B! Dude, why did you not get a better mark then if simple?!
So far so good! I like his online classes. He is dedicated and puts effort to provide quality. I heard from friends last term that he was quite helpful when the virus hit and classes had to go online. I now see the quality and am quite happy with my choice.
As others have said he unnecessarily complicates easy to understand concepts that the book explains well in half an hour to an hour of reading. You'll do better in the course if you spend the four hours of lecture time a week reading the textbook for four hours instead.
Love his classes! Makes you rethink everything you thought you knew. He gives a lot of depth to the material. I am really enjoying it. Read some of the comments below too and was quite surprised; they do not seem fair and honestly are far off. Some constantly blame others for their lack of enthusiasm and dedication. No one cares if you do not!
Had doubts at the beginning, but it turns out he is really great. He puts a lot of effort into his online class. Gives excellent feedback, anytime I contacted him. He did put up a mock exam for everyone to worry less about online exams. He knows his stuff and is quite caring. Probably, one of the best teachers I have had. Definitely recommend him.
He is great. It takes a while to understand what he is doing. I have learned a lot so far. Totally recommend him.
Two thumbs up!
Not a very interesting prof, he probably is smart but that doesn't mean he should be teaching. Always makes silly mistakes in lectures that confuse students who can't figure it out. Took a very interesting subject and butchered it. Monotone, not interesting, never uses examples in class. Doesn't encourage participation and is not welcoming
Made things over complicated, was not very helpful, criticizes students for asking questions, made students feel like a nuisance for asking questions, doesnt make midterms available and rushes you when you want to go over it. AVOID
A very good prof! All the few posts below seem by a single person plus many claims not true. He helped me considerably during office hours, reviewed both midterms with me and spent quite some time to explain where I had missed marks. I had done poorly throughout but with his help and my own efforts managed to get a good mark. Totally recommend him.
Agree with the comment just below. He is a great prof and is very dedicated. Puts a lot into his online classes and is really helpful. Really appreciate all he did through out this term (Summer 2020) and wish him all the best.
Just great!
My experience with Jian was not the best, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the online environment impacted the teaching environment. He was a fine teacher, had assignments that requires you to know the material, and this semester had very comprehensive multiple choice question tests.
He knows his stuff & is very helpful outside of class and during if you have questions. Lectures are a lot more useful if you have read in advance. Otherwise, it is hard to follow, which is not a comment on him but more about the difficulty of the subject. Assignments are not too difficult. Exams are comprehensive and challenging.
Totally recommend him! He is a great prof, knows his stuff (has a PhD) and is also caring and very helpful. Dont be shy to ask as he is going to help you lots.
Two thumbs up! So far, great, and much better than expected from an economics course.
I appreciate all the effort he puts in to help. I was quite overwhelmed at first, but reached out to him and he was quite helpful. Thank you so much!
Used his office hours and found it quite useful. He is a good prof and is really willing to help.
The mid-term doesnt make sense
Midterms questions don't make sense. I understand everything but I barely pass the exams.( I'm getting B+in assignments)
Wow! He really gives interesting depth and perspective to everything you thought you knew. He is awesome.
I am so far enjoying it and find the topics and his approach in teaching really interesting. Midterm 1 was not easy but quite manageable. Waiting to see what mid 2 looks like. Midterm 2 content look challenging!
Preparing for midterm 2 and realize how challenging things are. I wish I had started to prepare sooner. This is on me though, as otherwise Jian is a good instructor and has been working hard. I find the video recordings very useful.
I understand everything and studied hard but the exams are overly complicated for no reason. Give you 4 similar answers for multiple choice questions, so that they are all justifiably right but you'll probably still get the wrong answer. I am really hoping the final isn't like this. It's an over complicated course for a simple topic.
I loved the course! Learned so much and many things I thought I knew. In this class, realized there is a lot more depth to things I thought I knew. Unlike the post below, it is not a simple topic!!! To the contrary, it can get very complicated but if you enjoy it is really fun and exciting. I definitely recommend him and his course.
I agree: learned a lot and he was a big part of it. He is quite caring and spends time to make sure you have understood. Used his office hours and found him very helpful.
Exams are very hard and do not make sense. He knows his stuff, and econs is a hard course.
Two thumbs up!
Just started the course - 2 classes in. So far, can say a bit slow but liked it. He said tho that it will be slow at the beginning to make sure all are in the same page. His intro to graphs and equations was quite good. I learned quite more than I had years back! Totally recommend him.
Took it with him last sem and my mans here makes econ harder than it should be. Explainations make no sense. Just drop the course or take it with a diff prof. Not worth your time
He is just awesome!
Worst instructor I've ever had at Langara. I've taken a couple Econ courses before this one and find myself trying to learn concepts that are more calculus than economic. He makes you learn "in depth" knowledge which in turn is not mandatory to know to understand concepts. He wants you to know these things without teaching them. A lazy prof.
Did not want to write here but saw a couple of extremely unfair comments below & decided so. Jian is a great prof! He put a lot of effort and time into his classes. He covered all the math concepts and provided resources to read & practice. He has even reviewed these in class several times. He cares to make sure no one is left behind. Be fair!
I wonder how some if these people know better than the instructors what depth and what skills are needed. Have seen such comments for other instructors too! Simply, if you want to learn macro, Jian is a solid choice, very knowledgeable, and quite helpful. You will learn a lot from him. But, you need to out in the effort too.
This mans straight up makes lecture boring but he deserves mad respect for making sure his students learn the concepts. Hes an alright prof but mans gotta make lectures more fun
I am doing pretty well in his class but his notes and lectures are straight up messy and confusing. He goes on and on about class examples which then makes everything he say confusing. How are people defending this man's teaching? Just avoid him taking him.
He is great. I have learned a lot. I use his office hours and find it very helpful.
Lecture are heavy but amazing! I recommend him, if you want to learn something that is quite useful and if you are willing to do the work. Otherwise, there are others that just dictate things or read from slides and ask easy questions, of course with the downside of you not learning anything useful! I guess more tuned towards interested people!
Did the second midterm. Was difficult as hell, but manageable. Had to study hard for it and I was happy with the results. This is a great class and it feels good that I am learning something. I am grateful to him for all the efforts he puts during class and office hour and totally recommend him. You should make extra effort if you wanna do fine.
The midterms are hard unless you really put in time. I took macro with another guy and almost a similar story. The only diff was Jian explains things deeper. If you put time and effort, you learn (I have learned) things in always more fundamental. I totally recommend him: will learn lots & get good marks if put the effort.
A really good person and great prof. He is caring and supportive. Gives good feedback. Lectures are hilarious, and more so if you review concepts in advance. Agree with the comment below that takes considerable effort to learn, so do not take while you have other heavy courses. I recommend him and would take any other courses he offers.
I agree, his lectures are boring and too long. His notes are too messy. Nice guy though, but gives off snarky vibes
Hands down one of the worst profs at Langara. If exams are theoretical, make the lectures theoretical. People are right about his stand-off attitude. Every 2 hr lecture is a complete waste of time that's why no one attends them
Posting this just before the final exam. How these people below have already their marks?! This clearly speaks to their intent. Obviously, less people attend his classes bcuz theyre busy at the time (just like myself), he records class lectures & gives access to those later. To the contrary, he is quite helpful and lectures are high quality.
He is a good prof, puts in considerable effort, provides recorded class lectures (quite useful, since had to watch some several time to understand), is very helpful in office hours, is caring, and knows what he is teaching. I whish there was more time to see more real world examples of what we learned. Lectures are heady, but should they not be?!
There are always people that easily fabricate lies to justify their lack of progress or success, rather than trying harder! Not saying this was the perfect class, but come on! In one of my study groups, there were people like these - honestly poisonous. Be ready to be overwhelmed by the amount of things you need to learn. This is a heavy course.
Jian does the bare minimum and calls it a "lecture". The textbook should help us understand the concepts he teaches, but he expects us to learn ourselves. He once said that it was our responsibility to learn everything on our own and expect the things he didn't teach to be on the exams. I didn't pay a couple hundred dollars for a trash education
Mardukhi is caring, supportive and he wants people to succeed; Just ask him for help. I went to all his lectures and it can be tedious, but you DO learn things during that time. I didnt like how the exam time limit was an hour, but other than that, this class was okay. Also, these reviews are kinda mean and exaggerating things
He says I don't know what the answer is or how to explain it when you ask him a question from the textbook. Recorded lectures are useless they are so long they go off-topic. Live lectures are confusing and are not clear. More of a self taught course, if you like confusing exams in a short period of time this is your class look no further!
By far my least favourite professor. I found his lectures to be extremely off-topic and often felt our learning goals were unclear. Not to mention, his recorded lectures were super abstract and long. The midterm was even more abstract and did not give students an opportunity to express their knowledge of the content. He was also quite judgemental.
By far my most favourite professor! I found his lectures to be extremely interesting - have learned a lot so far. His recorded videos are very good. The midterm was closely following the assignment questions; had a few abstract questions too, but still all covered in lectures. He is very caring, helpful, and gives really good feedback.
He really good and very helpful.
Not helpful or resourceful, more of a read the textbook and learn yourself class
You really have to work hard in this class if you want to pass. Lectures are boring and all of your learning will be from reading the textbook. Midterms are the worst since you're only given an hour to answer 30ish questions.
Very good!
Very knowledgeable. Nice & respectful as a person. Quite helpful, accessible, responsive, and caring. Puts in lots of effort. Lectures are sometimes hard to follow and complex (reading in advance helps a lot) but to be fair a complex subject matter too. Thanks!
He is caring. He focus on important points in his lecture, and give us additional class for Q&A. If you find his class is difficult, actually the course is already hard. His method makes you really think about the subject and understand it, not just read and memorize. So for some students who never tried active learning, you should get used to it
Awesome !
You need to read the textbook in conjunction with attending lectures when you have questions. Very responsive to emails. Tests are literally what is learned from textbook and class.
Jian is by far my favourite professor. Look, this class is challenging. It is possibly the most challenging class I've ever done; however, it is also the most rewarding because the macroeconomic theory you learn directly applies to real-world markets. This class changes the way you perceive the economy. Keep watching the videos, and don't give up.
He is a great person and all; but he is not the greatest professor. The class content is hard, but he makes it even worse with 2hr lectures that do NOT explain the actual content. 85% of concepts of the chapter you have to learn yourself w/ the textbook. The exams are nothing like the assignments or class notes.
Jian is great! I signed up for his online class with no (zero) scheduled classes. Was quite surprised, and am quite grateful TBH, that he is putting extra work to have a class every week, while he did not have to. He has been clear these classes are not for teaching, rather to practice, review, and Q&A. I find it very helpful. I am quite happy!
Jian is knowledgeable and a great prof. He is caring and helpful. Responds to emails fast. He accommodated me when I was going through a rough time earlier and also when I had a schedule conflict. The course is hard, especially the second part. He had warned us about it. I haven't been able to attend all classes but the ones I did were useful.
Explains concepts very well. Excellent prof, highly recommended.
Jian is good at what je does and gives second chances, a rare quality these days. Would definitely recommend him.
Jian is of the bests at Langara!
Great teaching style. Join the once-a-week live sessions, really helpful reviews.
I got nothing from him, all he focus is calcution and graph, just focus on your textbook, you will have your knowledge.
This Professor makes the things more difficult than they are. He explains with a diificult way and his assignments are way too difficult.
He is good. He is quite helpful if you approach him. His one class a week for review and practice is quite helpful. He give a second chance to everyone in class to recover marks if they can do well in the final, which is quite generous and unique. I definitely recommend him but get ready to work!
I don't know why others recommend him, but i wouldn't. Macro is very hard at the first place, but he made it even harder. I barely understood him on his online lectures and never could focus on it. Moreover, if you just read the textbook, it is super hard for to understand.I have to say he is nice, but he is not the professor for me.
Jian is not one who has the best intentions for his students. He wastes two hours of your time and expects you to do well on his exams. The proper material is not given to you to even have a fighting chance. It has been a month and half of his class has dropped out. Spare your time and money and choose a different teacher.
Honestly, I feel he made macro more difficult than it is in reality. Wouldn't recommend this instructor if your transferring to UBC or SFU.
Jian, while seeming like someone who does want his students to succeed; fails in that regard. A good man, but not the best prof. He feels quite intimidating, and the lectures are hard to follow - concepts not taught or barely touched upon make up most of the exams. For an intro class, it feels much more difficult than it needs to be. Be careful.
He is the worst His explanation is so complicated and his exam is so hard Even you study so hard , you will be ended up with low score
Jian over complicates macro economics. It is an intro course but he expects you to come in understanding model theory from the second lecture. His lectures were so complicated and I only learned anything from the textbook.
Jian is great! His lectures were very thorough and he always asked if everyone understood what was happening. I skipped a couple of lecs but easily caught up because of his detailed slides. Responds to emails fast, has accessible office hours, and is really passionate about his job. Just work hard to understand the concepts and take diligent notes.
Jian marduki is a good. Professor. His way of teaching is awesome . Everyone should choose him .
For an entry-level course too many graphs and models. The way he teaches is not for entry-level. Overcomplicated. Many students don't need this level of teaching in mandatory classes that will not be related to their future careers. Trust other reviews and avoid this professor.
attended like 5 of his lectures before dropping out tried to understand him so hard no one understood anyt makes no sense feels like he's speaking another lang. teaching and material is all over the place half the class dropped it after the midterm. save ur money and dont even bother taking this class take another prof trust me
Absolutely Brutal teacher lectures are hard to understand just a bunch of scribbles across the screen. The graphs that are actually important to learn looks like a box of crayons exploded. The lectures are a hot mess with arrows and circles going across pages.
Although it is an introductory course, the way of teaching by Jian is over-complicated and too quantitative. The choice of questions from the examination is very similar and you will likely get a very poor grade even if you have fully prepared for the examination. In short, I will not recommend anyone to have this instructor.
Jian is a great prof. I learned a lot in his macro course this (2023) past Spring. It was very challenging. Worked hard and he helped a lot. He also gave everyone a chance to improve upon their marks, which really helped me. I totally recommend him, if you are up to working hard to learn. You will be amazed how much you will learn.
Jian is knowledgeable, caring, dedicated, and supportive. The course is hard and takes time and effort. Totally recommend him.
I really enjoyed Jian's class and learned a lot. It is amazing how he can use the models and analyze the real world stuff. Definitely recommend him.
Oh man, Jian gave everyone in class a chance to recover from low midterm grades. Really generous! Enjoyed his class. He is funny too. The course is difficult, but gets better and better towards the end, even though it gets more complicated. I guess I suddenly started to understand somewhere before midterm 2 and after, towards the end. He is great!
I was doing decent until I daydreamed for around 5 minutes. When I looked back at the board, it was all algebra. I ended up dropping after the first midterm, where the class average was around 40%. Heard that a lot of other people dropped too. Took it with a different prof and did way better. Overcomplicated.
1221 online, Video lectures are multiple hours long, Hard to follow cause of messy writing and an more explanation of material. Reading the textbook alone did way more for me than watching his lectures. Midterms revolve around the assignment questions and Textbook work.
This course is overcomplicated by Jian. Jian uses difficult analogies and mathematical notation to explain concepts that can be explained with a few words. Note I am taking multivariable calculus and second year physics courses and this course with Jian is more time-consuming than the other courses combined.
bless up on god.
Really caring prof and very helpful.
Very boring online classes and over complicates simple terms.
A good prof, helped me in office hours, tough course.
Helpful and gives a second chance, which is very much appreciated.
do not go for this professor
Helpful and knowledgeable prof.
Good prof
Took his online course and was happy with the quality.
Three weeks into the course and so far am enjoying his class. He is knowledgeable, informed, good in explaining things, funny, and professional. The class is engaging. Totally recommend his class.
Tough course, good teacher, caring, starting to learn. Recommend.
Every time I asked a question he responded quickly and clearly. He is helpful in office hours. He has opened my eyes and made me interested un macro. I would take any class with him again.
He is one if the best at Langara.
\_(.,.)_/
Jian is a nice person, a good teacher, knowledgeable, and caring. He explains concepts clearly. Asks questions and carefully answers questions. Concept are difficult at first but get quite straight forward when practiced. I would take any course with him.
Decent prof, caring, considerate. The course is hard. He does a good job of explaining things. Exams are tough.
Just did the exam. Tough but manageable. He is a nice person.
Be ready to work hard! Jian is one of the nicest profs at Langara. The course is hard at first but gets better when you learn the foundations. Attending class helps a lot. Midterm 2 was harder than mid 1 but what is covered was very different. All in all I am enjoying what I am learning. I recommend him.
Professor Jian is great! He makes class interesting and is always there to help. Definitely recommend taking his class!
He teaches well and expects high from students. He wants students to learn the logic and not the surface. If you want to learn & get good marks just follow his instructions.
Tough course until after midterm 2, when you finally understand what is going on after working hard at it! Then you realize it all makes sense and not that difficult, after all. Caring prof, heavy tests, and heavy lectures. All in all, very positive experience. I give him 4/5 and will take any course with him again.
Jian is hard working and caring. The second chance to recover at the end is great. Content is heavy and takes time and effort but not impossible.
Dr. Mardukhi is a nice person and a good prof. The course is easy at first, tough in the middle, and less so at the end. Takes time and effort to do well in this course. Would recommend his class.
Fabulous classes and funny. I liked his teaching.
Did the exam today and was not too difficult. Happy with the result. This was a tough course but started to make sense and get easier towards the end. Around midterm 2 was the peak of difficulty. After, started to make sense. Jian is a nice person and teaches well. I liked his class.
Awesome prof and great classes.
Jian is very positive. His exams are difficult. He cares about his students and you can talk to him. I would take other courses with him.
Thanks for the second chance! Your class helped me realize I like macroeconomics. Many thanks!
By far the worst prof for economics. Avoid at all costs. Dude talks in jibberish considering this a first year course!
Jian is an amazing prof, hilarious classes, dedicated, caring, and patient. Will take any other course he teaches. Learned a lot in macro.
Jian is an amazing professor. He is very helpful, always ready to help and replies emails as soon as he could. It's really important to pay attention to his lectures and do what he teaches in class and you are good to go. Second midterm term was peak and if you revise and practice what he teaches in class, final would be easy.
His exams are very hard and he tries to make things tough. It is a basic level course but he wants you to know high level stuff. The good think about him is he is willing to help you outside the class.
Tough course, hilarious classes, caring and helpful prof, takes considerable effort. For me was a great fit and learned a lot.
Liked the prof and teaching style. Content was average.
Just started but like him and his class.
Really fun guy and caring. Makes sure everyone understands. Sometimes even explains too much.
Good class
Jian is a caring professor who makes the content engaging. The class starts easy but gets tougher around midterms, then becomes manageable again. Use resources like unstuckstudy ai to stay on top of the material.
He is great at explaining simple microeconomics in a complicated way to the students. Thanks to that, most of the students were incredibly confused.
If you are good at math OR you like algebra DEFINETLY take a class with him. If you dont then dont waste your time because you might fail. he is very kind and patient but he is HEAVY on the algebra of this course and expects you to have taken Microeconomics before Macro!
BEWARE Professor Mardukhi's Lectures are the biggest waste of time and you're better off reading the textbook by yourself. He adds unnecessary details and uses abstract equations to explain easy concepts. Please avoid this prof, he is one of the worst at Langara.
He is kind and caring, understands you well, explains things clearly, and not a difficult to communicate with.
his grading criteria is high. He does not mark the homework in detail. Had to do a lot of self study or even self learning. Notes are copy and paste of the book, in point form. The final mark is worth a lot in the grade. Do not recommend.
Good good good
He's okay I guess
This teacher turns a very simple concept into an extremely over complicated explanation with unneeded math and algebra. A concept that could be explained with 1 sentence is turned into a full page worth of algebra for the explanation. If you thought you understood a concept, he will prove that you know nothing by confusing you with useless math.
Avoid him, if you don't want to struggle in this course. Exams are very tough and grading criteria is questionable.
Tough but interesting course. Very different from what you expect. Exams are tough to but manageable.
Descent. Thought will get a C but got a B+. I appreciate it.
Happy with my mark, higher than expected!
Overcomplicates topics so following along in lectures is impossible. Exam questions are sometimes ambiguous. Overall a good respected, caring professor, but his tests and teaching is bad.
Economics is difficult to learn. I believe Jian tries his best to elaborate on complicated topics. His tests are difficult, and can be sometimes misleading, but in the end, you will get a better final mark than you may expect after midterm. He mostly values your hard work, and participation.
Very tough grader. Lots of assignments.
