Not good, only take him if you have time to study on ur own.
Rushes through the chapter and barely scathing the topics but instead expects you to optimize your ability to use the concepts on the tests to the best of your abilities, which is never A quality. Probably one of the worst math teachers I've had in awhile.
The subject material was clearly presented by the professor and examples were very effective and easy to follow. The profesoor is very knowledgeable and kind. Gradin fair and HW load is reasonable. The best thing I liked about this course is the way of his explanation of concepts.
A great teacher. He is really good at explaining math concepts and making them easy to understand. Well organized and very effective class. His class may not be an easy one (no extra credits) for some students. Come to him only if you are willing to work hard.
Pretty bad teacher. I really don't like his class. He makes it very boring and it's unorganized. You have a quiz/test every week. Hw is not mandatory though. Only take this class if you're willing to get a tutor or outside help.
He is very helpful without being rude. He really wants everyone to do well. He assigned hw but didn't collect it. He gives quizzes every week so it's really helpful to do the h.w. He doesn't really give extra credit.Obviously you need to study and put in effort not just depend on lecture, its math! He curves and a C is 65%!
He talks fast which some people can't keep up with. But go to his office hours and he's EXTREMELY helpful. If you can do the hw, you will pass the quizzes/tests. Make sure he knows your face too, I got an A in the class.
Prof. Du is a nice guy. He is organized and disciplined. The only problem with his is that he skips a lot of stuff, even though i passed his 114 with an A, im still having a a lot of trouble in Math41. Take him if you don't need calculus series. Just because he skipped a lot of things in 114, i'm having a very hard time understating things in 41
EasyA class. He explains everything very clear and he is really a nice guy. Mid-terms and quizes are straightforward! Highly recommended.
I took his summer calculus course. We had a quiz everyday. The midterms were definitely hard, and the final was the same difficulty. He's a decent teacher and explains concepts well given the time crunch we had in that quarter. Getting an A is hard if you don't strive to master every lesson.
Got A in 43 and B in 1A, his multiple choice are very tricky, and cost you a lot of points if you're not careful. His explanation is very indirect, so sometimes you need to see the text book to understand completely. For the quizzes learn from the homework for the questions are very similiar.
His Mid terms were easy and final was HARD. Hated Multiple Choice question because you can lose a lot of points there. Doesn't provide a study guide for any of his exams. I m not sure if I want to take him for 1A, since he tricked all of us during final exam.
The professor is easy but to be honest he teaches with a difficulty to learn. He uses one whiteboard and writes on the left side only illegible writing as well so learning during lecture is extremely difficult. Textbook is required but an extreme waste of money since it is never used at all
Super easy class. However, I feel like this class prepared me better for Physics 50 than it did for MATH 1A. Make sure you pay attention to the example problems he does in class.
No extra credit, a C is 65-79% but an A is 90-100, has an accent but still understandable, textbook isn't needed unless you think you'll need to touch up on previously learned topics which he doesn't go over, uses mymathlab which is pretty helpful, overall this is a teacher for a student who is good at math.
Don’t do it! Don't take his class unless u r a pro in Math. Difficult accent, he uses the same side of the board while there r 4 other boards he erases it before u r done writing No reviews at all, he doesn't prepare u 4 the exams he covers the chapters on the book as fast as possible. Does the student learn or understand anything he don't care.
The professor is kind of hard to understand and sometimes changes his mind about what he wants to write for notes. It's a good class but you will have to spend more time learning the concept. Once you get the concepts down, then the quizzes and tests are easy.
The instructor's lectures are very clear and well organized. He does an excellent job in explaining the concepts. I felt I have gained a lot of knowledge in math by taking this class.
Very nice instructor, respectful and easy to talk to. Tests, quizzes, and homework are appropriate. He is very knowledgeable and his presentations are very clear and to the point. A perfect class for whose who love math or really want to learn.
The course was informative and well laid out. The amount of cours ework assigned was reasonalble. He made the subject matter clear while transitioning with ease.
Dr. Du is a very good instructor. Very easy and understanding. I see some mentioning his accent but it's not like you can't understand him. No extra credit but if you really do his homework, you will get an A. He basically put same questions in his quiz and exams. Take his class and do homework and easy A. Very nice in person also.
Prof. Du was very clear and thorough in explaining key concepts and made sure everyone understand. A great instructor, very organized and helpful.
Very, very, hard to understand (due to accent). Test's are very tricky but multiple choice. Quizzes are weekly. I do not recommend taking this professor at all! Lot's of online busy work and does not apply to tests at all. Unless you are a math wiz DO NOT take this professor.
Alright so i studied Calculus already in high school and I took Mr. Du's class. Mr. Du makes mistakes often while teaching. Teaching wise hes okie, not the best. Kno the formula and apply. He tries to explain why formulas are wut they are. He teaches at average pace, not fast. His expectations on test is all things on quiz. All question are forward
Worst teacher. You should never waste your money on his class.
Probably one of the better math teachers I've had at De Anza. He's okay at explanations, but if you do the homework you're practically set. Attendance is important, and there are quizzes every week. He lets you use notes on tests, and they're generally about easy to moderate difficulty. Then again, I love math, so I'm not the best judge.

I really liked the way the instructor explained the problems. He taught well and in a manner I could easily comprehend.
Literally can't understand him bc his English is so bad (very heavy Asian accent). A self study course-dont bother going to class other than to sign in and for tests/quizzes. His "lecture" is txbk written - just learn it yourself from it (what I did). Tests/Quizzes have material thats barely mentioned in the book. No EC or help. Worst in department
Here's the thing: He has a thick Asian accent. If you're able to understand him, the class isn't so bad. He sometimes makes mistakes while lecturing, but he's an easy grader. However, he doesn't really prepare you for harder classes. If you do some self studying, then you'll get an A and will do fine in the next class.
his class is boring. quizzes are from the textbook. tests are multiple choices, true or false, and some problems that need to show your details. you have enough time to do the test. no extra credit. many people took this class at first. and then most of them dropped the class
Honestly, this course is easy, but I had trouble understanding him since he had heavy accent; I would suggest anybody that can't study on their own to not take him. You won't understand anything in class, I feel like I wasting time attending his class.
I can't understand what he said. Tough grader. Easy quiz if you keep in class until the end.
Prof. Du is a great math instructor, very knowledgeable and approachable. He shows not only techniques but also the concepts behind what we do. His grading is fair. Aways takes time to help students if they have questions. I have enjoyed the class.
A good preparation for higher level classes. Very clear class notes. The extra information about mathematical thinking was extremely helpful. Many of the problems professor introduced in class required creative thinking. A good course with good professor.
Can be a bit difficult too understand at times because of his accent. Says that he will test basic understanding of material on lectures but puts difficult problems on exam. Final exam was surprisingly easier than first two midterms.
I personally did not like how he taught because it was not that of an interactive class. His course material is good though, and I believe he knows the subject matter precisely.
Listen to the lecture, take note, and review the textbook(homework, exercise, true/false questions). Then you would be fine.
The lectures were well organized, straightforward, and clear. Awesome professor and nice person, always happy to answer any questions.
He knows how to teach and is knowledgeable. Amount of homework was reasonable, and the questions on the test were fair and appropriate.
the main issue is his lack of explanation, he does one problem once and expects you to get it and know how to do it and various other difficulties immediately and then moves on. he answers questions by saying what he said in the lecture and that does nothing for actually explaining why or how. stay away unless you already know the material.
I am not very good at math and feel that I left every class more confused than when I walked in. He rushes through concepts and does not do a lot of practice problems and assumes the class understands the material. He never reviews concepts, he just moves on to the next one. He also gives you a hard time when you ask questions. Avoid him.
The instructor was of excellent quality. His lectures were well prepared and conducted and explanations were very clear. One of the best instructors I have had at a college. Always available to answer questions, willing to help.
If you struggle with math I would not recommend this professor. You go through concepts very quickly, covering about 3 or 4 new concepts per class. If you keep up with the homework and understand it, the quizzes are easy. The problem is you do very little review in class, and if you do it is always rushed and he expects you already know everything.
I feel bad writing a poor review because he is a very nice man when talking to him. The class is not interactive and moves very quickly. He will cover a new section every 10-15 minutes. I would imagine students who struggle with math would find his class very challenging. His class is very fast paced and you should expect a quiz or test every week.
His class is a pretty standard math class. The only con with this class is that it goes very quickly, if you tend to zone out during class I would not recommend this professor for you. He has very neat handwriting so his examples are easy to copy down. Homework is all due on exam day, usually about 150+ problems that you have a couple weeks to do.
do not expect to be blown away by this guy. du is passable, i do like that he replaces your lowest exam with your final exam score if you improve. his style of teaching is pretty basic and bland. his accent is hard to understand. expect to review concepts on your own and probably get a tutor if you struggle. he will certainly not offer you any help
He is a fair instructor but not the best available on campus. I would recommend taking someone else. I took Mosh for 2B and enjoyed his class a lot more. Dr. Dus homework load is fair, quiz questions are fair, but his teaching style is lecture heavy, he doesnt fully explain concepts, and he is not very helpful when you ask questions.
He is a great professor to work with. The lectures were super clear and very focused. Gave study guides and was clear on what was going to be on the test. Homework amount was reasonable. Attend class, do homework and you will do fine on the course.
The lectures are very clear. The professor prints out notes for each student based on the textbook and goes over examples in class. He also gives clear study guides and defines clearly what will and will not be on exams. Great professor!
He is very organized and enthusiastic about the subject. Learned a lot from his class. Highly recommending taking him.
Pretty boring and dry but not a bad teacher. Can be hard to understand at times and some of his grading criteria is unclear. Overall, not too difficult to get an A; he lets you replace a midterm with the final and drop a quiz, which are based off of homework. Do the homework and read the textbook and you'll be in good shape.
student participation in his lectures because he is boring. I had summer disc. math with him, and there were 3 quizzes (one dropped) which were based on HW (3 assignments of 70 problems due every 2 wks). He has very terse printout notes on each chap - copy down what he writes in lectures. Harsh grader on tests and final, attendance is for grade
Wouldnt recommend this teacher unless you understand the concept well already. He doesnt teach, he answers the computer generated problems in an attempt to show you how to use a formula, makes mistakes with certain problems after being pointed out by a students. You shouldnt have to teach yourself outside of class, or seek someone else to teach.
Very good instructor in terms of presenting the material in a clear and easy to understand manner. Grading is fair and exams are reflective of the objectives set in the courses.
Great class and great professor. Class notes and study guide provided are very helpful for preparation of tests.
Do all the homework and the study guide practice problems and you will have no problem.
Professor Du was great. At the beginning of class it was a little hard to understand him, but he had such will organize lectures that it made it such an easy way to learn. Basically if you participated in class and showed up, you were definitely passing the class. This professor insured that each student was able to understand what he was teaching
Professor Du is an awesome statistics professor! I came into this class not having any strong mathematical background and Could understand concepts quickly with Dus Course. You must study hard for the final exam and all exams, but he is generous enough to drop your lowest exam score and lowest quiz score. I recommend him to all my friends!
He is so nice. I like the way he gives homework for us. Don't absent any class of him and be attention then you will be get A easily. His exams are not too difficult.
I take both last and this quarter in his class. He cares about his students. He is willing to get feedback from his students about the class difficulty and the teaching speed. His own teaching materials of math have very clear and well-organized knowledge points. Following his class notes, and do HW on time. You will get a good score! He is Good!
He doesn't care about the students. He doesn't care if you follow along or not either. Don't take this class unless you want to suffer. Literally cannot understand what he is saying.
I AM LOST IN THIS CLASS. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING. LISTENING TO HIS LECTURES DOESN'T HELP EITHER.
Just go to class to do hw. You'll learn more from chegg tutors
Prof Du Paul is really a very nice professor. Very dedicated to his teaching job. His material & study guide for every exam is very clear and well-organized. I took Math 12 last Q. Sometimes it's not easy to catch the idea of his lecture. But you can still overcome it by reading his text again. And, try to do all HWs, you can get good points.
One of the best math professors, ever! Second time taking his class, as always I love his teaching. His material is very useful, which is the clear concentration of book knowledge. No hard question in the exam, instead of basing on the basic theory and question he mentioned in class. Quizzes are base on the HW. Review both notes&HW. Got good score!
Sometimes, Prof. Du can be confusing and lost. However, even then, he would quickly try to help and recollect himself. Hes very kind and caring and is super straightforward on what is to be expected on the quizzes and exams. Quizzes come straight from hw problems. Exams are meant to focus on basic techniques. He really wants his students to pass.
Don't take this class unless you already have a concrete understanding of statistics. Prof. Du has a thick accent making him hard for some students to understand. His spoken sentences are very choppy and hard to follow. He tries to work technology into everything, even when it isn't needed. His lectures get annoying and useless real fast.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WRITE OR TYPE SLOW
Prof Du is a solid choice. Lectures can be boring, slight accent. He gives a study guide before every test and it is really similar to the actual thing. 3 quizzes in-class. Drops lowest quiz and replaces lowest midterm with final if it is higher. Attendance is taken at the end of each class if less people showed up. Homework graded by completion.
Very conceptually heavy teacher. He is a harsh grader, any minor mistake will basically knock off about half credit from a test question. Formats questions unclearly/confusingly and will not help you out if you ask him for clarification. You will probably learn more by taking him, but it could be at the expense of your GPA. He is challenging.
Good luck trying to get him to answer your emails. He has an accent that you need to get used to. HW tests quizzes are very straightforward hence why I passed but this professor is really not good for you if you need help outside of class
I liked how the professor organized the course and provided very clear and easy to understand notes. The examples that go with the notes and the sample problems in the provided study guide are really helpful when I study for the exams. Overall, a great professor, very knowledgeable and patient with in answering student questions.
Finite Mathematics taught by Prof Du was pretty difficult. The instructor isn't great at distance learning and it wasn't very welcoming to ask questions. Accent from the instructor makes it hard to follow along in class even if you're paying attention. Homework is basically optional, tests are easier than the homework.
Look I'm not sure how he was pre-covid but these online lectures he gives are awful it's hard to get a hold of him too. He isn't lenient on anything even if it's an actual emergency (failed a test because of this) Don't get fooled by his good rating, your real teacher will be khan academy or youtube if you end up taking this teacher.
I had a fantastic experience in taking his classes for Math 1A and 1B. He spent class time going over homework problems and provided study guides and review sessions for the exams. Exam and quizzes were straightforward with the lowest quiz dropped and the lowest midterm replaced by the final exam.
The lectures are based on the notes he summarized. No textbook is needed. The grade is more than 90 percent depends on tests and quizzes. His class suits people who don't like complex works. The lowest quiz score will be dropped, and the lowest midterm score will be replaced. The date for quizzes and midterms is explicit. Review hw and notes first
Took his online Math 1C for the summer. Very well organized notes provided. Problems on quizzes and exams were reasonable and straightforward. The lowest midterm could be replaced by the final exam. By the way, he is Not a tough grader and he really wants his students to get a good grade.
you're graded on homework, quizzes, exams, and the final. Homework is fairly easy and graded based on completion, there are 3 quizzes - lowest quiz score gets dropped. There are 2 exams, but he spends class time reviewing and answering questions. Everything is graded extremely quickly (around 2 days), and he is very clear about his grading policy.
He provides his own notes with details on how to do each problem & goes over the conceptual information. Exams and quizzes are based on homework and are straightforward. Overall, a great choice if you can complete your work on time, pay attention during lectures, and not slack off. He is extremely knowledgeable and is approachable with questions.
Fair grader. Lectures can be very slow and boring but the textbook we used (David C. Lay) was well written so I mostly self learned. If you do all the homework, and understand it, you should be able to do well in his class.
If you want an easy pass, definitely take this class. Open note assessments with basic questions, very similar to the HW, class notes, and practice exams. He often answered any HW questions, which was nice. Assigned a manageable amount of HW. Pay attention in class, maybe do extra textbook problems beyond what HW he assigned, and you can succeed :)
Unfortunately, I had very hard time understanding the professor. Attendance is mandatory, all work is "on paper", even HW is returned in written form. Lack of online resources like Webassign didn't work for me. I love their explanation videos and examples.Unclear grading criteria.
Beware, GPA killer. Very little work outside of the tests, this class is heavily quiz/exam focused, which have all questions written by hand. They're open-book but the grading style is so ridiculous that that doesn't even help. This class would be pretty doable if youre doing anything before Calculus 1C or possibly 1B. Otherwise, it's a nightmare.
Avoid this class if your major isn't math because the lectures and notes are simple but the exams are crazy comprehensive. And you have to write everything by hand for the exams, it's a mess. Wouldn't be surprised if the good reviews were made by the professor, it's that bad.
Tests and weekly quizzes are similar to HW and lectures and he goes over every quiz/test in class. Sometimes gave us take-home quizzes if he thought we wouldn't have enough time to complete them. Very lenient grader. Lectures aren't too clear, but he will answer any questions. Drops lowest quiz and replaces lowest midterm if the final is higher.
Bit of a tough grader on exams, frankly. Like others say, lenient about quiz deadlines sometimes. I didn't really study or do much hard work, besides homework, and got through with a C, so that's something to think about. If you put in effort, I'm sure you can get an A. Also open note exams, he posts his notes most times, and is a decent choice.
Knowledgeable professor.
He gave out lots of extra credit. We had a sudden change in our instructor, and Im glad he was our new instructor bc I dont think I can survive MPS without him. His tests follows the hw, so pretty much do the hw and you pass the exam. He has many check-up quizzes, but easy.
If Math isn't one of your strongest subject, I suggest picking a math class with him. He is extremely good at breaking down a complicated problem for someone to understand. We all know memorization is not a good way to learn so Dylan tries to connect each concept with each other to give us a better understanding in why we do it that way.
Pretty easy professor if you just utilize your resources if you know what I mean. 1st quiz/exam is extremely easy so if you mess up on that its kinda over. 2nd and 3rd chapter becomes harder but doable. His exams are 50% conceptual 50% computational, he basically gives you the answers for the concept problems so free 50%. Prob easiest math 1d prof.
His class is fast-paced so be ready before class. He is available after class if you have any question. Overall, he is a good professor to take! Good luck!
His lectures and notes were all over the place. Nevertheless, his class was the easiest math class I have taken, and I failed BC in HS. On his exams, he gave us 20% for free, and his exams were fairly easy. They were just WebAssign type problems with one curveball sometimes. Easy A
This math professor is the professor everybody wishes they have for the rest of their math courses, he assigns two exams that are handwritten and on WebAssign. However, he does not assign a lot of questions for both and gives you an ample amount of time to complete the WebAssign portion. His lectures are so clear and enjoyable! TAKE HIS COURSE!!!!!
He is so passionate and shares his love for math so you can feel he really wants you understand and absorb the material. His teaching style makes math stress-free because he takes the time to connect w students. He's lenient, caring, funny, and willing to take the time for you to learn. He's very approachable when you're struggling w/ math.
Paul Du was a caring person but not a very great professor. His lectures are based on filling in notes that he made which are very helpful but some self study is required to fully understand the topics.
Replies super quick to emails and very nice. However, his lectures are quite hard to follow, if you can self-study, then go ahead and take him. Quizzes almost every week, they were in person at first, but he ended up letting us take home. You can bring all you need on exams, so you don't have to memorize much. HW are graded on completions.
3 hw, 6 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final. Drop lowest quiz n replace lowest midterm w final exam if latter is higher. His grading criteria is unclear, he took off most pts for proof-writing probs w/o explanation. Prepare to study on ur own cuz he expects u to read books n understand the concepts, rather than going thru lectures with eg. Not recommend!
I took professor Du's Math1D because he was the lesser of two evils for 1D professors that fit my schedule in the quarter. The difficulty was about what I'd expect from a 1D course, but his grading policy is a little unclear and very arbitrary. He also wastes a lot of time in lectures with an average of 1170 filler words per 2hr class (we counted).
Overall, good professor, the workload is pretty reasonable for an advanced class. Helpful during office hours and midterm review sessions. Weekly Quizzes and midterms have at least 1 curveball question(not difficult). Lectures are not helpful, lecture notes are completely different from HW/quiz problems, doesn't keep track of time in lectures.
Need hard work for his class, but he is really nice and you actually learn stuff from him.
1D was very straight forward. You have a weekly 45 minute quiz of about 3-4 questions based of of the homework, ~10 homework questions per topic (bulk turned in before the exam), 2 midterms (one replaced by final if you scored lower), and clear lectures. He does not expect you to be a genius, just do the homework. Not a stressful class whatsoever.
Not bad
Boring lectures where he rambles and uses filler words. Use the textbook and youtube to do well. Fair homework, fair quizzes, and relatively fair midterms/exam. Your mileage may vary, but he was a self-study course because of the uselessness and rambling from his lectures.
His accent is a bit heavy, and the lectures can get a bit difficult to follow (wasn't helped by the fact that I took him online). He is fair, and tries to help his students.
His class is better than I expected. Your grade is mostly based on the tests. His tests just pick medium-difficulty problems from the textbook and change some values but sometimes even not. He also provides hints and allows us to use cheat sheets and calculator. And he dropped lowest quiz and exam as well. He is ok if you can self-study.
The Professor had a thick accent and difficult to understand. The homework and quizzes are way way harder than the lectures to the point atttendence wasn't necessary. I got an A because of self-study on youtube (Professor Leonard). Don't take if you are lecture reliant or dont have that much time to self-study.
He has a difficult time with questions, kind of verbose lectures (my hand always hurt by the end), and a heavy accent. But he's a good guy. He would try to make his explanations intuitive and his group assignments/quizzes actually helped me understand things better. Also open note tests make the class very easy to do well in.
The lectures can be a bit tough to follow, but the professor is fair and tries to help students. Use the textbook, YouTube, and Unstuck AI for study prep - it really helps make up for the rambling lectures.
The tests are very much like the classwork and quizzes, but the homework problems from the textbook are harder. The lectures and notes go over everything on the exams well.
Took him for precalc 1. He really tries to go in depth on topics and teaches kinda slow. Cheat sheets were allowed for all exams and its all stuff he's gone over before. Quizzes were also open note. Overall easy class, make sure to do the homeworks and also probably best if you can self-study. His accent can be hard to understand sometimes.
Lectures were often unclear and moved quickly. Homework was minimal, with only a few tricky paper problems, making it hard to review concepts without outside resources. Not recommended for those weak in math, especially or as a Summer course. A third of all the students dropped the class during the Summer, and many students were not passing.
Do not take this class. He goes over one example each and does not even explain it well. When doing a math problem, he would think of the answer in his head and just write it down. Not even explaining how he got it at first. He expects you to already know everything so he just skims through lessons. WHICH IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL.
You are only graded on 3 homeworks, 2 exams, 6 quizzes, and your final exam. They aren't too difficult, but it is recommended to study for them. He is a pretty slow grader though, its been 2 weeks since my final exam and I still don't have the score. Grades are published though.
