Material covered is pretty boring.
I liked the man and his teaching style. Chinese accent not bad.
Decent teacher. Doesn't make the class thrilling; covers material well enough
Hard to pay attention during lectures. Accent loses some specificy needed.
Chen is cool, respects students, very dedicated, asset to college, recommended
very good instructor, sit towards front of class
Fair and unbiased. Boring but a good teacher, much better than Jung.
Nice teacher ,covers material throughly but could try to make the class more fun
I enjoyed the class but had a hard time understanding him at first
very difficult class, could never have passed without the teacher
easy class, good prof.
nice guy, unbiased, goes easy on you, the subject is boring though
Good teacher.Grades Fair.
He is very borred and very taff and not really helpful
Difficult to understand, pay attention is class, and you will do fine.
very boring and hard to understand. Very easy A
Very hard to understand even without the accent. Needs to let the class talk.
Nice guy. As long as you show up and do the reading, the class is pretty easy.
If you take Logic, make sure you pay attention, the last few chapters are tough
Great Guy! Course should be required by all GRCC students.Best class at CC!
Great humanities class for anyone who likes math. Textbook was unneccessary, if you pay attention and sit in the front. Nice guy.
Good teacher. He repeats thing a lot until it penetrates you're skull, but that's good b/c I'm thick headed. There's a CD in your book, USE IT, you will not regret it. Loved this class.
Boring, but does lots of examples! Not that hard
The class ended up being easier than I expected. Nice teacher.
he made the information easy to understand
He likes to laugh at his own questions. Also beware he has been known to say "Right" alot. I've tallied one day and in 45 minutes he has said "right" 231 times.
He makes class interesting, you think in ways you never have before. One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Says the word "right" at least once in every sentence.
Best teacher ever! Take him if you ever get the chance!
great teacher, hard to understand
He likes to say "right" a lot which is very annoying. Very boring guy! I could not understand what this guy was saying, ever! But I got an A doing minimal to no studying at all.
His Biomed ethics class is very easy and interesting. Says "right" just about every other word though. Very nice guy.
Very intersting discussions over reading material. I enjoyed the class, learned a few things and got an A. Take his class everyone should get something out of it.
This class is a lot easier than I expected. There are only 2 tests for the semester, but they are open notes. There are eight 1 page papers due throughout the semester. If you cant write 1 page, somethings wrong. If you fail this class, somethings wrong.
He goes over what you need before tests and quizes so no suprises, i would recommend him to anyone
Mr. Chen is the coolest guy, take him if you want to have a good instructor for Pl202
I loved his class. It was very interesting. Is very helpful with any questions that you have if you ask. Has a very good review before every test. The questions on the test all come from the book!
I feel bad for him. Our class never had any good discussions b/c most of us were asleep. Repeats himself a lot, and I counted the word "right" 175 times in the 1st half hour of class once. If you study you'll do well.
Likeable guy, funny, great at teaching. Fun class.
this teacher is very boring and annoying. if u take this class take ur puzzle book with u. his final exam is very hard and its not open book. please dont take his classes and the only thing he knows is how to say "RIGHT" and laugh on his own stu
Ok teacher, just a little hard to understand, very helpful if you ask for help. Easy to pass if you do your work and can write a good research paper. Exam was cake, the whole exam was given to us before hand and we were allowed to bring in notes
He is so nice . Hard to understand the first few days of class but you get use to the accent. He is very helpful. Just go to every class and study half an hour for each test by reviewing notes and you can get an A.
Good instructor, just wait a few classes to get past the accent. If you get bored in class just TRY to keep track of how many times he says "right". My current record is 132
Interesting class. Mr. Chen is a funny, interesting professor. Reccommend this class.
Took telecourse, easy humanities filler course. If you have half a brain and your not totally lazy you will do well, easy A. I met With Mr. Chen a couple of times, he seems very nice.
Learned a lot, not really a hard class but you need to pay attention
At first hard to understand, get past the accent and easy class, do the easy papers, do the study guide for the midterm and final, and it's an easy a. Very funny guy and is very interesting!
Funny guy. Once you get past the accent, he's easy to follow.
This was a hard class...You only have three tests and five quizzes (the lowest is dropped) and no homework. I was confused several times and had to realy on the book. He will give you points for trying though.
Easiest class in the world. It is literally straigt from the book. Got a 96 on my test, 24/25 on one quiz and 25/25 on the other before I had to drop the class. Hard to understand his speech so just show up (attendance affects your grade) and read your book and you'll get an A.
He is super nice. Very helpful, and like everyone else said, you start to pick up on his accent after about 3 weeks. He is informative and laid back. He is laid back about attendance, not about missing alot, but being late or leaving early!! He's awesome!!
He really knows what he is talking about. If the class participates in debates it will be fun. He does not give exams just 2 major papers 5 1 page papers and an open note/ book test. He is a good teacher and the class is fun
Easy class. Accent a bit much at first, but you become accustomed to it. One exam, two 6-8 page papers, and 5 short [less than one page] papers. Do good on those, you have an "A", my friend. Good class if you like debating on current world issues, etc., or if you just like or love drama.
Great teacher! Really knows what he's talking about...can offer a lot of insight.
Great class. Prof's a bit hard to understand with his accent though, but he does try, and if you can understand him he's a very good professor.
VERY NICE TEACHER VERY HELPFUL 8 ONE PAGE PAGERS ABOUT THE LAST CLASS INTERESTING POINTS DO GOOD ON THOSE THEN 2 EXAMS HE GIVES YOU A STUDY GUIDE OF ABOUT 10 ESSAY QUESTIONS USUALLY THE ONCE HE TALKS ABOUT IN CLASS ARE THE ONCE ON THE TEST MIGHT BE A LITTLE HARD TO UNDERSTAND BUT OTHERWISE I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM HIGHLY
Awesome teacher,he makeS hard material seem very easy and he's very nice. I started out reading the book but quit after while, because he goes over every thing you really need in class. Just use the book for practice. Bottom line go to class, listen, and use the book for practice, you'll do fine. AWESOME TEACHER!!!
Chen was pretty cool. At first he takes a little getting used to, but once you get past the accent he is pretty funny. He definitely knows his stuff. Pay attention in class, don't miss any quizzes, and do the practice problems in the book and on the CD, especially for the sections outlined in the study guide, and it's an instant A.
Great guy. This class isn't exactly a cake walk, but for the most part if you pay attention you will do fine. There are 8 one page double spaced paper, not a huge deal. The main thing, GO TO CLASS! I skipped once and I was lost for like 3 weeks! papers are based on lectures, so if you are there, you will do fine. No tests, just a midterm and final.
He is really funny and really tries to help you understand.Like everyone else said, GO TO CLASS. If you skip any class dont let it be this one. If you go to class, you will be golden. Don' let it scare you. I was scared for like a month. He gives you a sheet with possible essay questions on the exam then picks from them. Its a snap!!
There are 2 tests with very helpful study guides but don't slack off too much or you will be cramming for them as they are pretty extensive. I know a guy who is repeating the class, he says it is because he didn't turn in one paper so get all 8 in. The class is most interesting if you participate, good conversations, likable teacher.
GO TO CLASS! I agree with everyone else here. If you don't show up, this class will NOT make sense. Chen does a good job at explaining a fairly difficult book. Tests are directly from review sheets given to you the week before. Will help if you ask him. His English is actually pretty good, and he speaks clearly. Good prof!
great guy and a great teacher. really tries to help everyone. dont be stupid and just go to class. his classes are discussion based so if your gonna bother going to class, at least try talking and voicing your opinon. it makes class more fun. DEFINETLY RECCOMEND TAKING HIM
I recommend this class highly. Just come to class and do the assigned writings. One midterm exam and final paper. Class participation makes discussion very interesting. Easy A if you do the work and show up for class.
Good teacher, always willing to help students. Not much homework.
he is a great teacher. This is my second class I have taken with him, and I love it. At first he is a little hard to understand, but you get used to it. He really cares. His tests are based on the study sheets he gives you. Don't skip class or you will be lost.. I suggest trying to get him as a teacher, you would be lucky.
A little hard to understand. Alot of in class discussion, one page paper per week and two tests amid-term and final; both based exactly off the study guide. You do have to attend and understand the material to pass. He is very helpful.
He is a great teacher. He can be hard to understand.. but you get used to it. Don't let his class intimidate you. He is willing to help. You will learn SO much from him. Awesome guy..
Easy class, good class for winging assignments, kind of a snooze cruise the whole time...but you'll survive
Interesting class if you are with smart students. If you are with student who just like hearing their own voice and are closed mind it is boring. Professor is very fair and helpful. I hated discussing subjects with students who argued with just their opinons and not facts. Be open minded. Participate and the class will be more interesting to you.
great teacher. a little hard to understand at first but once u get used to the accent he really does a great job teaching u pretty hard material. also very helpful when u have questions. btw the study guides are like an outline for the test, easy and great teacher!
1 page paper a week, 2 exams taken directly from the study guide. That's it. Must do the reading to understand though. Do the work and you will get an A.
Good class, easy assignments and only 2 tests. Has a great sense of humor and always makes you think about things in different ways.
Really enjoyed this class. Of course, there are always the "clueless" people in class who waste everyone's time with useless comments. He's a really great guy who asks questions so we can get to the root of the concept. I highly recommend him if you like to question theories and learn about the base of ethics in everyday life.
Only 8 short papers, midterm, and final. Gives study guide that you can use on exams. Easy work, go to class. Interesting sense of humor? (try counting how many times he says 'ha right ha', you'd probably be amazed) overall makes confusing book clear. Don't let attendance scare you, it's not a hard class.
The class is on a 300 point scale so it is a little steep because you drop a grade for every 15 points you lose. Get an 85% on an exam and forget about that A you wanted. The scale is strict because as long as you work hard on the exam reviews and get your papers in it's fairly easy.
The class is alright. I thought it was going to be a lot more interesting than it was. All you do is turn in a paper a week, he'll call on you to say what you wrote about. Then he just lectures the rest of the time. Theres a midterm and a final, which he gives reviews for. Easy but boring.
Cool prof. Class is interesting and pretty easy. Lots of class discussion. I took 3 classes with him and enjoyed them all.
I took his intro to logic class and I thought it was pretty neat. His accent is a little difficult at first but after a while you get used to it. He explains things well and grades very nicely. You might put the wrong answer down for a 10 point question and only get 2 points taken off if he thinks you understood the point. Very funny too!
Thought at first I was going to drop, but I am so glad I did not. At first he is hard to understand, after that it was smooth sailing. 3 test 5 quizzes and very helpful, he prepares you for the test and quizzes very well. Great sense of humor. I am looking forward to taking PL-205 with him.
Very good instructor. After the second session you will get past the whole accent thing and things will go silky smooth. As long as you pay attention and do the book's CD-Rom or ilrn.com exercises (same Flash based program), you'll get at least an A-. He drops the lowest quiz out of five too. Oh, and his test grading is more than just fair :D
awesome proff!
Prof Chen is the best. He gives and takes with his discussions. Allow yourself to be open minded and you should do well. Tough Mid and Final exam if you don't do the assigned readings. Weekly writings were graded leniently.
Very nice and easy prof. 8 short papers within 12 weeks to do them. Midterm and Final were easy since he gave you the questions before hand and you could use 1 cheat sheet on both exams. Sometimes his classes were boring and people left early but come to class & do the work, its and easy A.
He's probably one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Prepares you well for tests and quizzes. Drops lowest quiz of 5. Only 3 tests. If you miss class, make sure to catch yourself up or you will be lost. Just going to class will almost guarantee you around an A-. Pay attention to examples in book and follow along and you should do great.
Very nice guy. He likes to make jokes so the class doesn't seem so serious. His acccent is strong, but after the first week, you get past it. There are take home reviews for the tests, but he goes over everything in class beforehand as well. As long as you pay attention and read the book, you'll do fine.
One of my favorite classes I have taken at GRCC! Professor Chen does an exceptional job explaining everything & keeping the class very interesting. Highly recommend!
Class is not the most exciting, but that could be do to the fact it was at 7:45am. He is a very good teacher and is extremely helpful and thorough. He does go over the material a lot and his tests and quizzes are not hard. Very good teacher though, I recommend him.
One of the best instructors I have had at GRCC! He makes the class very interactive and interesting. He gives a thorough review sheet before the exam and grades the short essays fairly. I preferred his logic class, but his ethics class is worth taking as well. Funny guy!
Chen is awesome. We talked about to controversial things and he knew how to buff it out. He was funny and told jokes. He does have a thick accent but it makes class that much more interesting.
I've taken Mr. Chen for three different philosophy classes. He has me laughing everyday with the 'right' that he says after nearly every sentence. Sometimes he doesn't form a complete sentence when he talks but you get what he's saying. He is very intelligent & if you go to class and read the book, you'll be fine. Recommend taking Mr. Chen. 'Right'
Very interesting, unbiased, intelligent, and funny professor. Highly recommended.
I LOVE this teacher. He is a bit hard to understand for a couple days but this class was so fun! He is a fabulous teacher and makes everything easy to understand. Put in a bit of your time and you'll ace this class!
Outgoing professor with witty jokes relating to ethics. Took it last semester and loved how it was engaging. However, you need to actually read the two books and be prepare to discuss. I had no knowledge of the topics, but enjoyed the class overall. You also do about 8 papers throughout the semester, which are easy if you understand ethics.
Read the book, go to class, participate and you will without a doubt pass. He is a really intelligent professor who will always ask interesting questions. Only take this class if you need to.
This class was pretty interesting. Professor Chen is an easy grader; he's a really nice guy too. The class discussions were sometimes frustrating but definitely entertaining.
Such an amazing professor wish i could have him for every class
This is a great class. Mr. Chen actively trolls the class to get otherwise quiet people talking. This is one of the most exciting classes I have taken in my post-secondary educational career. Recommended!
Prof. Chen is cool, laid back, and a pretty easy grader. Very limited homework given. For the exam he lets you use your exam review. His class discussions are interesting as well
Chen is obviously very smart, and he can be really funny. However, his logic class is the worst I've taken at GRCC. He never once uploaded grades to Blackboard b/c he expects you to figure out your own grade. He never learned names, and every single class was straight lecturing until class ended. He made no effort to make it interesting.
Prof. Chen is an easy grader. If you follow directions, you will pass with a good grade. His focus is on class discussion. Prepare to have your worldview and opinions challenged. Fantastic class. I would definitely take a class with him again!
Easy professor. SHow up to class and should end up with and A. Class is not the easiest, but not that hard. Some people didn't take it seriously and had a hard time. The class name is misleading, and people think they can get away Bs-ing. Few quizzes through the semester, he goes over everything before the quiz. Gives study guide for tests.
Professor Chen is super nice and funny. He also explains the concepts well. He has a thick accent so he is a little hard to understand at first. But, you'll get used to his accent after the first few weeks. If you put in the effort outside of class by keeping up with both the reading and the questions in the book, this is a really easy class.
This class is TERRIBLE. It was not at all what i thought it was. The professor is nice enough, but this is really one of those classes where you have to read before class, and then make sure you try to pick out what you need from his lectures. If you listen to all of his lecture, you will leave more confused than when you came in.
It's a debate class. Expect the semester to be solely lecturing, and be sure to read ahead of time and discuss from the chapters read. Some papers, some quizzes, and some tests. Heck, I fell asleep in one of the meetings all the way through, it was that boring.
Definitely a tough class no matter who you take. He made the class a lot easier. He made sure you understood a topic before moving on to the next. It is extremely helpful to participate in class. There is only a midterm and final along with short papers -- so easy! Definitely doable. Important to come to class or you will get lost in the material.
great guy, not too difficult. takes a bit of reading but nothing too serious. lots of in class discussion.
Class is super easy!! exam is super easy! His exam is all essays! There are no test and there's really no wrong or right answers. However there is a paper that is written every week. BUT! By the end of the semester there has to be a totally of 8 papers so it's really easy! The essays are all in the textbook.
Mr. Chen is a fantastic Philosophy teacher, I really enjoyed his course. He has a strong Chinese accent but I did not have any trouble understanding him. Lectures are very participatory. He gives out a helpful study guide for each exam.
Chen is a fantastic professor. His lectures are interesting and informative, and he doesn't assign tons of unnecessary work. Show up, do the reading, and you'll pass no problem.
As long as you are engaging with what he talks about, you will be fine. Noted, I took his early morning class where I was barely awake without a cup of coffee. His tests and assignments are straightforward.
Chen is a great guy and his class is not that hard. All test and quiz questions are in the book. He goes over problems and has reviews for the tests. The only thing I don't like is him not posting grades on Blackboard. He doesn't use Blackboard at all. Another than that the class is pretty easy.
I went into this class just using it for a credit, but I ended up enjoying it. He really is passionate about what he teaches and it makes it surprisingly interesting. It REALLY helps if you start a debate- great debates make learning the material so much easier. Read the textbook and you'll get an easy A.
In 11 weeks of class we had to do 8 one-page papers, submitted whenever we chose. There was a midterm and a final exam, but no tests in between. The lectures are pretty interesting, but you could probably still pass even if you didn't show up. He sticks pretty close to the textbook, so you can either read it or listen. I chose to listen.
Although Chen has a strong Chinese accent, if you're listening, you will be able to easily understand. Eight one page papers that need to be turned in once a week whenever you choose in the 15 week class. Only a midterm and final exam were given. Absolutely no homework. Get the book just because its majorly easy when writing a paper. Easy A!!
Throughout the semester, we had to write a total of 8 one-page papers, half of it being your opinion. Super easy. Aside from that, there was one midterm and a final, both of which you could write notes on the study guide and use during the tests. Lectures are boring and you could definitely skip if you wanted.
8 reflection papers were due. midterm and final you could use your notes. a little hard to understand with accent. Very easy class.
Like him so much I took 2 more classes useless to my major from him. The papers are easy 100%s. Arguing(with reasoning) with prof and classmates is highly encouraged. Very interesting class.
The lectures are pretty boring and he teaches straight from the book so attendance isn't really necessary. You definitely need the textbook though. He lets you have a cheat sheet for the midterm and final. He is really nice and grades things quickly.
About 8 assignments, plus research from sources he gives you. You can use 1 page of notes from you study guides. Only 2 test. 1 midterm and a final. You need to participate in class. PL is difficult but he is one of the nicest teachers there is.
He's hilarious because literally ANY topic, no matter how taboo is open for debate with him. He just goes for it! Of the 13 weeks of lecture, he required 8 one-page papers for the week's topic which you had to casually talk about during class. The papers and tests requred both attention to his powerpoints and free text books. Helpful study guides!
I hate philosophy and I enjoyed this class. He is willing to give everyone a fair shot but if you blatantly put no effort into your academics he'll have some respectful choice words, so I'd recommend not walking out in the middle of his class to answer phone calls every single day. His lectures are extremely interactive and engaging. 10/10.
Pretty easy class, sometimes presenting an unanswered question about the lecture every week can get annoying. His accent is pretty heavy, but if you pay attention you can follow. He's a nice, happy guy has a dark sense of humor and always laughs at himself. You are allowed a cheat sheet on exams so it's a fairly easy class to pass.
I was hesitant to take this class after reading reviews but Prof Chen is hilarious. Just talk about topics for the entire class. We had one open book/note exam, he gave us the answers to everything but the essay questions. One page paper due each week, graded so easily. Two research papers. Fun lectures if you participate. Easy A and great prof
I didn't think I would like Philosophy, but this prof. made each lecture quite interesting. He assigns a one page essay every week (which you only have to do 8 total throughout the semester) and gives you 2 chances to turn one in each week. There's only a midterm and final exam and he gives you a study guide for both. I enjoyed this class a lot.
Challenging class but incredibly fun! I felt like I was learning so much. The concepts you learn are applicable to the real world and the professor cares so much about what he does. It is difficult for sure but he gives great examples. Asking questions is important and if he doesn't cover something you can typically find it easily in the textbook.
Very clear directions on how to get a straight A. As long as you put in some effort and don't mind short (1 page) essays it will be easy to pass. He's a nice guy too.
Easiest class ever. Class is mostly discussion. As long as you write a decent paper for each week's page reflection you will be fine. Midterm- he gives you a bank of questions but you're not sure what will be on it. I really don't understand how people don't pass or get an A in this class. Interesting class too!
Great guy, definitely cares about what he does. Only homework is reading the textbooks (which are all free online) and completing 8 one page (double spaced) papers. They're easy and don't take too much time. He has a thick accent but if you pay attention you can follow along easily. Great lectures, dark sense of humor. You can tell he's passionate.
I had Chen for two semesters straight and loved him both times. He's super funny and has a contagious laugh. His sense of humor is kind of on the dark side, which is funny to me. For ethics, be prepared to talk or sit in silence if no one will. For logic, make sure to work on problems outside of class because they can be kinda tricky.
Very hard to understand. Likes to carry on about one subject and fails to get the attention of the class. Goes off topic often and dances around questions that are presented to him. On one of my papers I explained why I had the question and then asked the question but was told I didn't ask a question.
Easy grader
he lectures every day the whole time, you have to write 8 one page papers for the whole semester, and ask a question within the paper then present it, he will then tell you that your question and opinion are wrong and embarass you. He grades the papers but does not put them anywhere. Finals are tomorrow and I still do not know my grade. Never again
One of my favorite professors so far while attending GRCC! I took this class not knowing anything about philosophy and ended learning a lot. Chen is a caring professor who tries to engage the whole class even at 7:45am on a Monday morning. He is very passionate in what he teaches and it shows. The class is super easy with very few assignments.
Very kind and fun-loving. His homework grading criteria was a bit confusing for most of us, and we had to type 8 total essays (one every week). I didn't read much but still pass with decent grade. You can also use one page note in the midterm and final exam, so he made it easier for us with the given topics, questions, and vocab terms.
Eight small essays. Pretty good lectures and study guides that prepares for the two exams.
I highly recommend Professor Chen. I took this class online during the summer. It is 6 one to two page papers on a prompt he gives each week, a midterm, and a final. For the midterm/final he gives a review guide and you can use that on the exam. He posts a video each week which goes over the reading. He offers office hours if you need help.
Professor Chen assigns one, two-paged paper a week. They are only for completion but still, try your best because he does read them. He gives out a study guide for the exam that have the exact questions as the exam, so it is easy to get an A. Just read the book, take notes, and you will pass the class.
Professor Chen constantly stutters when talking in his lectures to the point that I cannot understand a word that he says. I actually stopped listening to his lectures and just did the reading and the assignments and still ended up with an A in the class.
Professor Chen was always responsive to questions, even outside of class times. The one issue I had is that he ran his classes Wed.-Tues. whereas all my other classes were Mon.-Sun. which just made it more inconvenient
I took Intro to Logic with Professor Chen online. If I am not mistaken, Intro to Logic wasn't offered online for fall 2020 until COVID so he made helpful videos where he reads through the assigned textbook portion and clarifies important parts. His quizzes seem to be graded for completion but he is always there to answer questions too! I recommend.
He was a good professor but has a heavy accent. The videos he posts are pretty long but easy enough to follow along with and he does give plenty of details in the videos.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Chen provided great lectures and made sure that everything we read from the books aligned with what we were learning about (There are 2 books you have to rent/purchase). He is a very kind and understanding person. Definitely take this class if you can! Easy A
His accent is a little hard to understand, but I didn't even really need his lectures to pass the class. Just do the reading and you'll be fine. He has weekly papers over two topics and they are very easy to answer. He gives out study guides that follow the test format exactly, so tests are easy as well. Highly recommend this prof
Class consists of weekly papers and reading. Overall great professor.
you don't have to be going into a medical field to get a good grade in/enjoy this class. though English isn't his first language, Chen makes a true effort to easily convey the material. you can pass without watching the lectures or reading the full chapter, just make sure you skim it enough when you write papers and have the book nearby for exams.
His class required a lot of papers, but as long as you were willing to put in the work he was willing to work with you. I'm a biology student but he got me genuinely interested in philosophy. Fantastic grader and super laid back. Amazing professor. Just be prepared to read a lot, write a lot, and sit in a long lecture.
Jianchu Chen had a strong accent but I didnt find it as bad as other students did. His recorded lectures were very informative but a bit redundant to the reading material. I found that you only needed to pick one or the other to succeed. He gave full points but offered odd feedback like: "Too Sketchy" Which wasn't very helpful.
AWESOME professor!! His online course for Introduction to Philosophy looks the same each week which is really nice: read a chapter and write a 2-page essay. A SUPER easy grader; there's no way you wouldn't get a 100% on the weekly papers unless you didn't turn it in or completely butchered the topic. My favorite professor so far!
Professor Chen is very straight forward about his assignments. There is a lot of reading but I found the readings interesting and the papers were engaging because a lot of them asked for your perspective on ideas so they were pretty easy to write.
Fully online course. Every week he had us do a two page paper (double spaced) about the reading and it was basically on your view/opinion on the reading. He does provide lectures every week but I found it kind of hard to understand the lecture. All in all he is a very sweet & discussed interesting topics in his class that I enjoyed writing about.
Not the best at teaching logic and just reads from the book with a heavy accent that leads to a lot of confusion. Does not use a white board to clarify how arguments are constructed to create the different patterns, i.e. Vertical, Horizontal, Conjoint, and Multiple Conclusion. Awful, lacking teaching skill or knowledge of materials being taught.
AMAZING
Takes serious topics and makes them more fun and approachable. Sparks good discussions and keeps students interested even in a 3 hour long lecture.
Good professor, provides weekly videos that further explain the chapters and the papers themselves are clearly stated what you need to write about and with only that you will get a good grade.
Very easy class no possible way someone fails. It is also an enjoyable class to take and the lectures are very engaging. He was one of my personal favorite professors.
The class was conducted in a slightly informal discussion-based class. We would write a one-page paper each week, as well as 2 essays throughout the semester. He was very caring and knowledgeable about the subject, and I would strongly recommend him though he is to retire. I wish him luck in retirement, and to his health.
He's pretty funny. Good teacher, philosophical. Fair amount of reading in this class. Tests and quizzes weren't anything to shy away from.
Loved this class, Professor Chen is very nice and easy to talk to. I took the online version, and we did have to write a paper every week. The papers were not hard, and there was a midterm and an exam which were both easy. There is a lot of reading so be prepared for that!
Professor Chen is very knowledgeable and makes learning philosophy very entertaining. He relates modern-day topics to his lectures and engages the class in intriguing conversation. Textbooks aren't used often, I would only recommend taking Philosophy if you have an interest in the subject.
This is a very easy course. The only reason I got a C was because I didn't turn in multiple papers. Professor Chen does NOT accept any late work. He is a caring professor who is very knowledgable in Philosophy. If you're looking for an easy class, this is it!
Professor Chen makes philosophy engaging. His lectures are worth attending, and the textbook is useful. With weekly papers and easy tests, this class is a breeze. I found Unstuck AI helpful for study prep.
Assigns a lot of reading assignments each week but you only need to skim these pages to actually pass the class with a good grade. Tests are mostly essay questions and they will be given to you to prepare for a week before the test is due.
I honestly learned much more than I anticipated but it wasn't overwhelming. Great lectures and discussions. Would absolutely take again!
