Dr. J is a good lecturer and genuinely desires student success. He can be confusing and dislikes answering too many questions so read the book! Admittedly a difficult class. Make sure you know your Calc. and physics! There is no substitute for doing the HW and going to office hours and TA's. Be prepared to work hard and you will succeed.
Professor Jia works harder than most professors I have had, but still cannot relate to undergrad chem students, especially considering his background as a physicist. Still, he genuinely tries to help students. Attend lectures and do every assigned homework problem...he does notice, and grades accordingly.
The class itself is extremely difficult, requires heavy knowledge of math (which I didnt have) and he doesnt make it easier for you to understand. He tries to help but just can't translate to student-speak. See you when I retake the class next year...
P-chem is not an easy class, but Prof. Jia did his best to help the students. 3 exams and a final. lowest exam grade gets dropped. Homeworks will help boost the grade. If u r doing just the average on the exam u will atleast get a B+.
Professor Jia does make attempts to review the materials in recitation and lectures but PChem is hard. PHY131 might help you out if you understood and remember the chapter on thermodynamics. Read the Atkins book (with extreme detail); and maybe check out MIT's OCW site for thermodynamics notes.
Extremely helpful. Loves his students, loves to teach. Works longer and harder than most of the students. P-chem is a tough class, but he helps you so much if you are really trying. What else do you ask for a professor?....oh, he is not great with responding e-mails, but there is a TA takes that part.
I <3 Jia. He's EXTREMELY kind, and GENUINELY cares about students. It's adorable how nice he is..he's also funny. He gives free food out in class, and I hear also during office hrs. TA bakes us cookies for us weekly. What's not to love? Pchem isn't that difficult. Didn't go to class, learned from textbook 3 days before exam, easy 90's. Don't worry.
lets just say Im still sore frome this class.
Tough class study well. and dont let your grade in this class desrtoy your soul.
extremely helpful & kind
He is impossible to understand. he has such a thick accent. There is no point to going to his class because you won't understand him anyway. The homeworks are so long and annoying and his exams are so harshly graded.
nice guy, helpful, can be unclear due to accent. gives easy tests and practice tests, curves alot. it might be hard class but he tells you exactly what is on the test, his practice tests are almost identical.and 30% of your grade is homework/quizzes. homework buy solutionmanual. quizes you can work with anybody in class (easy 10/10). take him!!
Don't expect to learn anything from him. Monotonic and unorganized in his teaching methods. EASY exams which are IDENTICAL to his practice exams. In class quizzes ARE homework problems assigned from teh text.
He's a nice guy. Tests questions came directly from the HW and Practice Exams. Beware: a few in-class quizzes are worth 15% of your grade. They're easy, but if you miss a few it can really lower your grade.
Worst of all CHE131 teachers. Unable to understand his thick and monotonic accent, he is clearly unable to teach him.
Don't bother showing up to class when he's teaching. The lecture notes are online. He's incomprehensible and very, very, very boring.
Although it is hard to understand him, he is a good teacher. You must follow along in the textbook, but if you are attentive in class you also learn a lot. Wish he taught more than SImmerling did =/
amazing guy, intelligent, difficulty explaining himself. great teacher though
Worst professor I've ever met in my life, and I've met some pretty bad ones at Stony Brook. He is almost completely incomprehensible, will smirk when you as him a question and just avoid your question all together. His slides have NOTHING to do with the exam. You're better off just reading the textbook before going to class and tuning out. BEWARE.
Honestly could not understand a single word he spoke, but even if I could understand him, he's so monotonous and BORING. I didn't learn a single thing from attending his lectures, which you don't have to go to. The textbook doesn't help much, just print the slides, teach yourself, and pray for the best.
Definetly not an easy class or an easy A. Requires a lot of additional work to do well. He is one of the better chem teachers, and speaks really fast. Most of the students failed in the intro class. Overall, always willing to help and is really helpful during office hours.
Professor Jia is a decent lecturer, though he goes really fast and his accent can get in the way. CHE 131 is a difficult course, so make sure you prepare yourself and complete ALEKS ahead of time since it's time consuming.
Wasn't as good as Lacey, but not too bad nonetheless. He does have a thick accent but I personally did not think he was that hard to understand.
He's very kind and extremely helpful. He will definitely help you if you go to him. The class is tough.
Great teacher once you get passed his accent, I had him the firs have of the semester then Roy Lacey took over. Preferred Prof Jia in the end.
Everyone likes Jia. You get passed his accent after the first couple classes. He's funny when he's not even trying, and really intelligent. He cares about you and will help you if you go to him after class or to his office hours. Very fair and understanding. As for the class, very difficult and you mostly have to work on your own . Jia helps.
I loved JJ! He's really nice and helpful if you go to him. He's very intelligent and is obviously passionate about chemistry. The class can be hard but Jia's a little more caring and considerate than most professors about his students' success. Overall he's pretty great!!
This class is difficult. ALEKS is time consuming and the tests are NOTHING like anything in ALEKS. Clicker questions count towards your overall grade, so show up to class. Do the sample exams and understand the concepts if you want to do well. He does have an accent, but I still really enjoyed his lectures. Powerpoint notes were easy to follow.
Has a thick accent but getting over it quickly is key. He moves at a fast pace, so doing textbook reviews before the lecture are necessary. An A is possible if you do all your ALEKS (including the review) and read the textbook. HUGE CURVE, and +- grades even though they led us to believe otherwise. Clicker questions are graded!! Get them right.
In order to do well in this class, you have to put in A LOT of work, you can't do well just sitting in class. You have to read the textbook, go to office hours, go the chemistry learning center, etc. Use your resources, chemistry knowledge won't come to you. I liked Jia, he's straight to the point and his accent wasn't a problem if you're concerned
Best CHE131 professor. He is a scientist at Brookhaven N'l Lab which shows by his incredible knowledge. He moves at a perfect pace, spending no more 3 minutes to quickly review (just pay attention). His clicker questions are straightforward, not trick Q's. He should have been the only professor. I got a 104 the first test, just studying his lecture
The class was a free A for me. 104 on both tests, do your connect/ALEKS and you are good.
He's so sweet, and makes the material relatable. He'll try his best to explain the material several different ways so you understand. He is also funny at times. Go to office hours, and he'll help. He was great! His reviews also helped.
Out of the three CHE 131 professors that I encountered, Jia was my favorite by far. His lecture slides are extremely easy to follow and he moves at a slow pace so that everyone can keep up with him. Also, he walked us through almost all of his clicker questions before recording our answers.
Great Professor. Moves at a steady pace with the slides and is willing to explain a topic if most of the class doesn't get the clicker question right. Also, his reviews are extremely helpful.
Best out of Lacey and Hsiao. Very friendly, fully acknowledges most of us are freshmen and transitions us smoothly into the college level. Office hours are very helpful, and he will take the time to help if you approach him. You'll get used to his accent, and he's a nice guy; he was the only one who did not grade the clickers.
Keeps class engaging by inserting his cheesy jokes that make you both laugh, and better understand the material. His lectures are concise and clear, making it very easy to absorb the material.
His lectures were clear, and his test was not hard at all. He was very friendly and always there to help you. Too bad that he only taught the first part of CHE 131.
JJ is super friendly and funny. He is well-respected among his students and his test is not too difficult. He does have an accent, but you get used to it very quickly. One of the best teachers for CHE 131!
Dear freshmen of stony brook, JJ is the best professor I have so far. He is really helpful and personable. I like him very much! He is funny too. He will be your great choice.
JJ is the best of the three professors. He goes through the lectures very quickly, which is not always great, but he still teaches the topics well. Cares about the students, knows how to use his powerpoint the best, but it is still a very rigorous course.
JJ is very cohesive. His lectures are precise and easy to understand. He gives you plenty of time for clicker questions and even helps you with some! Very funny even when he doesn't realize it. Tests are fair, studying is definitely needed. Overall great professor.
He was my favorite out of the three professors that I had to take. He wouldn't go on to the next topic until he felt as though everyone understood. He would also keep class exciting by making cool jokes. Sciene is a heavy topic, but he made it enjoyable.
JJ was my favorite out of the 3 professors. I thought that he was funny and made the lecture more enjoyable. But, he doesn't explain things very well, so you might have to read up on the topic after class. You do have to show up because of the clicker questions.
One of the best CHE131 Lecturers.
Can be a bit difficult to understand because of the accent but he has the ability to drawn you into the topic by making jokes and great slides
I'm a freshman here at SBU and I absolutely LOVED coming to Chem lecture. Professor Jia made lecture engaging, it was hard to understanding him at times but he still explained concepts well. He made Chem enjoyable!
As a junior, I found CHE 131 to be much more difficult and time-consuming than some of my 300-level classes here. Professor Jia's lectures were very confusing because of his thick accent. I had a lot of trouble understanding the material and thus, did not perform well. If you can, please take chemistry at a community college and not at SBU!
Jia was my second favorite of the 3 professors for this class. He gave good lectures, but was sometimes a bit confusing in his explanations because of his accent. Otherwise enthusiastic and helpful. The class itself is a lot of homework and participation (clickers) during class count as part of your grade, but otherwise attendance isn't taken.
Jia is easily the best gen chem professor you can get. Too bad he doesn't teach the entire course. He really tries to make sure everyone understands the clicker questions in class before continuing to the next questions. Jia is just this sweet man who wants everyone to do their best
Funny and friendly
Personally, lectures didn't do much except possibly clarify anything I didn't understand, but clicker questions are counted. I got a 104, 68 (the 2nd test is brutal), 84, and 84.4 on all of my exams and final in that order and ended up with an A-. Bottom line: ALEKS is your best friend, always do the practice exams and ask for help if you need it!
Prof. Jia is a nice person but sometimes his explanations are lazy. Like if he's explaining some type of stoichiometry problem for example, he'll say "it's so simple" or "just use your common sense". So be prepared for every lecture by reading the lecture notes beforehand, completing ALEKS & Connect assignments, & ASK FOR HELP.
The lectures get live streamed on blackboard so you don't even have to show up to class, you can watch from your bed and participate in clicker questions that way. He was the only one out of the three professors to let us out early. He's also just super funny and very easy to like.
He's a good teacher. He is the best lecturer of the three and is engaging and humorous. The work in the class is rigorous and time consuming, but that's every CHE 131 class at Stony Brook. Just pay attention in class and do all the work, it's there to help you. Not an easy A though, so study hard.
The best of the 3 professors
Jia was easily the best out of the three CHE 131 professors. He's really funny and cute. He explains clicker questions very well. He did teach the easiest section, but his slides were very nice and organized.
While giving lectures, he expanded on each slide, explaining it in easier to understand ways. He's humorous and well-liked, and you shouldn't have too big a problem understanding his accent. He teaches at a brisk but effective pace and often let us out 10 minutes early. Overall my favorite of the three CHE131 professors and an all around good guy.
JJ is the best out of the 3. His lecture are very clear, and they r on the point.
Jia is honestly amazing! He explains the topic enough, though he does not go into as much depth. He often walks you through the clicker questions so that you are not lost. He always makes jokes and lets you out early!
I took this class fall 2019. I loved this professor, he was the best out of the 3. He was funny during his lectures, which kept students paying attention. He explained everything well and clearly and was very lenient. Definitely would take have this professor again.
For me personally, Jia was the best out of the three professors who taught 131 during the fall. He was straightforward and direct with the material. He did his best to answer questions from numerous students and his lectures were completed on time or even earlier. Approximately 2-3 questions per lecture which effectively checks student progress.
love him best prof ever I will never forget him
His lectures might be long, but he makes it more interesting. He always explains everything, especially when students are confused on a certain part.
He was a very funny and chill lecturer, sometimes hard to follow along if you zone out like me but overall very chill class.
Prof JJ is a really nice and funny guy, but I hate to say he's a tough prof. He def can teach pretty well but some topics he just can not get across. He says everything is simple and it's kind of discouraging since most of the stuff we are learning isn't simple. He's funny though and generally tries to help and really encourages you to work hard.
He would speed through material everyday and end class 20 to 30 minutes early everyday. He is not a bad professor he teaches the material but he does not give a lot of time for feedback.
Prof Jia, aka "JJ" as we call him, is an ok choice. He goes really fast in his lectures and for someone like me who has not taken AP chem before it can be a bit overwhelming especially with the clicker questions. However, he is pretty funny and he always ends the lecture 10-15 minutes early.
Even though I have to re-take chem and struggle, I have to say JJ was generally a nice guy and a helpful prof. I wasn't a fan of his "It's simple" comments, but I understand he wasn't trying to scare us. He generally though wanted to help us and made some funny jokes throughout the class. First day was hectic but he does a great job.
Favorite teacher at SBU. It creates a great environment when your professor smiles and makes jokes during his lectures. His accent is a little hard to understand at first, but you get used to it. He moves very fast, so I recommend coming into the lectures having read the textbook.
Great professor and has good lectures that I was able to stay focused for. He always got through all the slides and was helpful at answering questions after class.
I think he's a great prof. like he cares about what he's teaching and cares about you understanding it especially if you make an effort and show that and like reach out. I will say that sometimes I feel like he might be a little too smart to be a professor, like, just sort of working under an assumption that we'll understand just as easy as him lol
actually teaches and eager to answer questions. seems strict but actually cares and wants us to understand.
Very good teacher, attentive to questions.
Nothing astounding but gets the job done. He is approachable and funny. For 131, please please study. I was a point away from an A-. Yes attendance is taken, but they dropped 6 attendance grades so don't hurt yourself over it. Try to go to every lecture though, or at least look at the notes. He posts slides. My B+ was my fault 4 not studying.
The homework assignments never seemed to end and the lectures were pointless as I didn't understand a word he said. Prof Jia wouldn't answer questions he would reply by saying he already talked about the subject in a rude tone, awful teacher. I preferred Prof Lacey compared to him.
He went fast, but he has to to finish the slides. He can put you on the spot in lecture so beware. He taught the math part of chemistry, but you HAVE to read the txtbk before lecture or u'll be lost. lecture is more for any clarification after reading. he'll say "it's simple" which can be discouraging. easy A if you do your pearson work on time!
Jia goes through the lecture quickly, but he does stay on schedule. He has an accent which was difficult to understand. Also when someone would ask a question he either wouldn't understand what the student was asking or would say the answer was already mentioned. Class is an easy A unless you hate homework (happened to me). READ THE TEXTBOOK!!
Good lectures, accent gets in the way sometimes but overall the concepts are taught well and he is efficient at answering questions asked in class.
Hes pretty hard to understand but the tests are so hard and don't reflect the practice tests that are given. He goes so fast and says "this is easy we don't have to go over it" or "go watch some youtube videos" instead of taking time to explain.
He talks fast but it forces you to pay attention. Sometimes he is confusing and there's a bit of a heavy accent, but he finishes the slides in time. I'd recommend reading the textbook before class to understand what he's talking about in the lecture.
He's a good lecturer if you can get past the accent. He goes quickly, so it's not a bad idea to read the textbook before class. He makes the class laugh sometimes and finishes before class time is over since he speeds through the slides.
JJ goes a lot more quicker than Lacey but he's a overall fun professor with a good sense of humor.
Lectures are useless he never explains anything and he describes at such a fast speed you won't even get anything anyway. His accent is a little hard to understand but you get used to it. I just join the lectures and do clickers and leave.
JJ is super fast paced (but finishes all his lecture slides in one period) and doesn't really clarify clicker solutions. He's passionate about what he teaches but expects you to understand concepts right away. I relied more on organic chem tutor when he was teaching compared to Lacey. Attend class and do as many practice problems as you can!!
his accent is heavy and he talks way too fast very difficult to understand. tests are really hard and his lectures are really boring. he often finishes lectures to early and sends everyone home which shows he doesn't really care about the content. would not take this professor but you don't have an option so just gotta suck it up!!
He has a very heavy accent and it's very hard to understand. If you aren't paying attention fully it's hard to get what he's saying. I honestly had to self teach myself through this whole course so I recommend using that organic chemistry tutor so you can do well on the exams.
Jia didn't spend a lot of time actually explaining the concepts during lecture. He always sped-through lecture and we'd always be done 5-10 mins before the end time. He speaks very fast and I could never understand what we had just learned. Best way to study is to read the textbook and do practice problems, since lectures aren't helpful at all.
Professor Jia wasn't particularly AMAZING, but I felt like he was much better than Roy Lacey. At the very least, he seemed comfortable with the content he taught, so lectures were often quite quick but not very efficient. Sometimes important mathematical procedures were glossed over. Very receptive to questions but his responses were hit or miss.
He is not a good Professor. I got an A in this class, but I don't think he taught us anything useful. He just told us some basic knowledge during his class, and the text contains many concepts that he didn't even mention! Also, he couldn't answer our questions clearly. It's a waste of time! If you have other options, please don't choose his class.
Not the best professor, very unclear on most subjects and rushes through lectures.
The class is taken online and I took my first semester with this professor. He was ok but not very memorable most of your studying would be done on your own. Overall he taught decently.
This class is in person but you can watch the online lectures instead. Although attendance isn't mandatory, you need to do clickers for a few points on your grade. The exams are most important and tend to be difficult but it isn't bad. He teaches decently but his teaching wasn't very memorable and most of my studying and learning was done on my own
Honestly, while I was taking him I thought he was pretty though. He goes fast but he will explain the content clearly. He wants you to understand what he's talking about and also is pretty good at answering questions. I took him for Chem 131 fall of 2024. I honestly wished more chem professors were like him
He's hard to understand and the lecture slides barely help when studying.
hard to say
Chem in itself is difficult but he didn't make it better. You get two professors during the semester and I didn't like having him until I realized the second was even worse. He's a funny dude but he's just hard to understand when he talks and the professors clearly don't communicate with each other on what's talked about and what's not.
Kind and caring.
Professor JJ made concepts pretty easy to understand, and moved at a relatively good pace. He listens to the class and does a good job explaining things that the majority of people might not understand. Good professor to have for CHE 131. Tests can be really hard, so prepare to study.
I had prof JJ for the first half of the semester and prof Lacey for the other half. Chemistry is already hard but its extra difficult because JJ has a really thick accent. He knows the material but you have to really pay attention to understand him. If you want to do well, do the Pearson homework before class so you understand the lectures.
