Do not take you cant understand a damn thing he says his accent is horrible I learned absolutely nothing from this class other then to read the text book doesnt give reviews for tests either and lectures about nonsense.
Bad, horrible, hard, do not take this proffessor at any point with any class!!! His test are hard, he talks and talks, there is no extra credict and the only grade he gives are his test. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
He is hard to understand but very upbeat and interesting. makes his class fun. but you have to study
THIS WAS PRETTY MUCH THE WORST CLASS THAT I HAVE EVER TAKEN! YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING HE SAYS, ONE B/C OF HIS ACCENT, BUT ALSO B/C HE'S SO RANDOM & DOESN'T MAKE SINCE. HIS LECTURES ARE HORRIBLE, NOBODY DID WELL ON HIS TESTS, AND TONS OF PEOPLE HAVE TO DROP HIM.
I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Chen. Once you get past his heavy chinese accent, it really does get easier. All he does is lecture, there is no homework. Just pay attention to his lecture, take notes, and you'll be ok. He is such a funny guy. Mentions China all the time, everything comes from China. He also makes fun of his accent. I would take him again.
I didn't enjoy this class. Every class was lecture only. Last 2 tests we had reviews that were really helpful. Not too much hmwk. A ten pg research paper & reading. Extra credit possible. He seems to be for drinking because he talked about it. Speaks very broken English. Would NOT take him again if I had a choice. My advice--Avoid!
Dont be freaked out by the language barrier or the fact that he is hard to understand. Eventually the tests get easy when he gives you reviews.
Great class. The Chinese accent takes nothing away from the learning experience. If anything, it adds to it. The class was very fun, Chen has an amazing sense of humor that is often not picked up on by the students. His lectures are insightful and he give a helpful review to students. I recommend this class and hope to have him as a prof again.
Excellent class. Accent was hard to understand in the beginning but he makes sure that you understand if he feels he made himself unclear. The study guide for the test IS the test. If you study the questions are exactly the same so no one should fail. A lot of lecture. Funny guy. I would take his class again.
I DIDN'T GAIN NOTHING FROM HIS CLASS!
Loved his class. He is very structurized. The hardest thing about the class is you have to read the book, but you can still pass if you don't. His lectures are fun and informative. If you read the book, take good notes, and review your notes, you will defenitly get an A.
This was a great professor. I would most definatly take him again. I learnd alot in his class and anyone who says the class was hard really didnt pay attention. If you pay attention in class you could most definatly make an A.
Great class, if you study and pay attention during the lectures you should get an A. His study sheets are a great help!
Awesome teacher. Extremely knowledgeable in history and english literature. Knows more about American history than most native-borns. If you don't want to work, don't take his class. He gives study review for tests that are the test. 100 questions on review, 50 of them are the test verbatim. You, of course, have to look up the answers.
Makes learning fun. Just a little difficult to understand.
If you know your material, you will do good. His reviews are little off. Basically I wouldnt count on the lecture review to help you pass. Most of his test questions are in his lectures. He gives a study guide which is the test usually. This class is an easy A.
I had to drop the class. I took it in summer and was having to read about 50 pages of info from the book everynight. Plus the review IS the test and has 100 very specific questions. Took me 6 hours to find all the answers and when test day came I could not remember any of them, and I have a good memory!
REALLY GREAT TEACHER... KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT.. WOULD TAKE AGAIN!!!
love how he randomly makes fun of ppl,..and his test format is perfect for todays college student. I learned without meaning to.
Dr. Chen is awesome! He makes history so interesting, lively stories, funny jokes, well thought out ideas and interpretations. He adds a human perspective to all the dates. He expects good attendance. His study guides are the exact questions on the test, I always do them a few days before or the day of so I remember them- HE IS AWESOME
Love, LOVE Dr. Chen! Highly recommend. He goes out of his way to make sure you have all the tools to pass his class with an A. It is essential to complete the study guides he provides for each test, along with reviewing the essay examples he provides. A little difficult to understand in the beginning, but he has a wonderful sense of humor:-).
Haha, Dr. Chen is entertaining. He has humor, and I like his style of teaching. It may be difficult to understand him at times, but oh well; I like him as a professor.
HARD BUT REALLY GOOD.
Memorizes his lectures--he has a really good memory! The pop quizes were the hardest. We didn't do presentations, which I liked. The video summaries were fun. Thanks!
Very hard to understand what he is talking about, but this class is an easy A. Just do the study guides. THEY ARE THE TEST! He just takes out a few questions. Not much homework, but he is a funny person.
He is a very bad teacher, has a horrible accent! Gives out a study guides that are 25 pages long, when the test is only 50 Q's long. Tests are based exaclty on the study guide! Notes are helpful. he makes you watch historic videos, and then summarize them. he gives abt 4 pop quizes through out the semester. I SUGGEST NOT TO TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM!!
all you need to do to pass is read the book.he gives you study guides and that is what is going to be on the test.you have to attend class he has pop quizes and suprise video summeries.this is an easy grade if you are ok with all the reading.he is chinese he was born there so his english is so so sometimes its hard to understand him.
I absolutely loved Dr. Chen! He was really funny and very passionate about history. He gives you all the test questions and lecture notes at the beginning of the year. I will definitely take him for Hist 1302.
he is a pretty cool professor, by far my favorite. he can be difficult to understand sometimes, and his opinions may be a little off, but he really knows what he is talking about. he doesnt do presentations and he doesnt read from the book. the way to pass his class is read the textbook and do the studyguide as you read- do that and youll have an A
Contrary to posted comments, his accent is not THAT thick. He is very helpful. The study guide questions are on the test, verbatim. He includes the essays in the lectures. He has an entire period for reviewing before the midterm and final. Very encouraging and funny. Makes class far from boring. Have taken him 2 semesters straight & would again!
Ironically, those that seem to complain about this class are the most illiterate, unintelligent people posting on this board. Dr. Chen's sense of humor only offends those who cannot grasp the concepts of sarcasm and wit. He is the best prof I have ever had; passionate, informed, helpful, encouraging, and hilarious. I'd recommend him to any/everyone
He is a easy teacher. I didnt rarely read the material, i paid attention and took good notes. He gave study guides which i used to study along with my notes. I found this class to be a easy A, as long as you put forth the effort.
Hard to understand, but interesting class
Easy Class. Just do the work tests are from the study guide given at begining of year, I can't conceive anyone actually failing his class unless they are just not doing the work or showing up.
All exam questions come from study guides given at beginning of semester. Answer multiple-choice questions with textbook, memorize, ace exams. Lectures over key terms, some used in random pop-quizzes. Six short video summaries are the only writing done. Doesn't follow set schedule for what he does in class, decides that day. Funny prof, easy class.
he is sarcastic & can be offendsive at times (depends how you take it) he has a very strong accent but is more than willing to repeat himself if you just ask. the study guides are 25 pages long but thats so you actually do the studying and learn something not just coast your way. its not a difficult class but yes it is a lot of HARDWORK.
I emailed 8 times with a question it took him 3 days to get back to me and all he said was that he wouldnt tell me anything. Study guides are full of critical typos that make them impossible to answer .Dont expect to learn what youll be tested on in class you have to do that on your own with the textbook. On review days he doent even come to class.
dr chen is a great teacher. he is very very funny and makes history not so boring. he does not give many grades, just four tests and gives 6 grades based on notes you took on a video. the study guides he gives are sooo helpful. every question on the test literally came word by word from the guide. if you do the guides you will receive an A
I thought dr. chen was a great and funny teacher. He is a little hard to understand because of his thick accent but his classes are always enjoyable! He is VERY easy going, and his test comes RIGHT off the study guide.. No surprises! Im taking him again for HIST 1302!
Great teacher if you take his course at the campus. I don't recommend his online course. In class he was very intimidating at first, but was a very enjoyable and quite funny teacher! Easy, easy A if you attend class. Online: Is not clear about assignments. Does not respond to emails quickly or clearly. Take him at the campus!
Took online for summer I. Read the chapters and answer study guide questions. Test questions are exactly what is on the study guides (multiple choice). Weekly discussions. Easy class, but kind of boring. 2000 word term paper due at the end.
Deceptively difficult but really quite easy. Test are based of study guides which are available from him at the start, all the answers come from the textbook, lots of busy work, but easy. Showing up is necessary to do in class assignments, but lectures usually have nothing to do with tests. Stay up on the study guides and show up and you win!
Dr. Chen is a trip. Yes he will most likely tell you to find your own answers to the study guides or to any questions you have but honestly if you just skim through the chapters as you do the study guides which are impariative to your sucess then you will be fine. Dont worry bout the inclass lectures if you read your book you will be fine.
He is somewhat diffuclt to understand and alot of the times he gets off track but his knowledge of history is unmatched. Read the book and do the study guide thats all. (hint get together in a group and seperate the study guide) i took him for 2 classes both EASY A!!
Dr. Chen is awesome. He's teaches from the book and test are just like his study guide. He makes learning History fun. I enjoyed his classes. Fun, Fun, Fun Professor
Awesome Professor! I absolutely loved this class! He is a very educated man and his lectures are always interesting. There are 4 tests including the final but as long as you do your study guides you will be absolutely fine! Four pop quizzes over class lectures and several movie notes in class. An easy A if you do the work and show up!
Professor Chen was great! By far one of my favorite instructors at NLC. He makes his lectures fun and has a great sense of humor. As far as the tests go they are extremely easy as long as you actually do all the study guides. For the pop quizzes he does then based on his lectures, they can be a little challenging but not too bad. He was great!
Best history class ever. If you want to learn history from all angles and think critically about it, this is your man! He really loves hist. and you can tell through his enthusiasm. He doesn’t help much but that’s college! Just do the study guide and you will get an A. Pay attention in lectures too! I can’t tell you how great this class was for me.
Dr. Chen is an awesome professor. His accent took me a while to get used to. The review is the test. The quizzes are hard, but just take notes the best you can and review them before the quizzes and you'll be fine. He sounds intimidating and hard at first, but it isn't that hard. I hate history and I'm bad at it yet I still passed.
Dr. Chen was very funny. I took him twice in the same semester. I really enjoyed his class. The study guides are time consuming, yet worth it. I got an A for the midterms and the final grade. The pop quizzes are hard if you didn't study. Do not cheat, you will get caught. Take Dr. Chen. He makes history fun and interesting. I would take him again.
Numerous discussions - must respond to others - took online class - stay on top of the deadline & you will be fine - had to do 4 tests at campus location - book report - make sure you look online how to write a college level book report - rude comments to class in general - otherwise it was fine
This is the Easiest History class that you can take. If you do the work there is no reason that you shouldn't get an A! Sure the reviews are a little time consuming but he gives them on the first day of class. make friends and split the review. don't worry to much about the pop quizzes they're hard if you don't take good notes and listen to him
Show up to his classes or you will not pass! Hew is a very fair grader on test. He gives you plenty of chances for extra credit if you need it. His test are not hard and he "pop quizzes" before the day you take them and aren't hard ether as long as you show up and pay attention to his lectures. I am looking forward to taking him in the fall.
Took his class for History 1301 and 1302. I got a C in 1301 because i rarely studied the study guides he gives you. His study guides are WORD FOR WORD on his tests, so you just have to do them (go to quizlet) and memorize them and you will pass. Other than pop quizzes, tests are your only grades. His lectures are amazing.
If you take lecture notes, then you'll pass the in class quizzes. If you use your text book to do the Study Guides, then you'll Ace the tests. If you do the extra credit you can't get less than an A.
I took professor Chen for summer I and his assignments are pretty clear. You do discussions so it helps to read the chapters. GET THE OPTIONAL 2nd BOOK! It really did help. Then he gives reviews for each test, as long as you do them you'll be fine.
I loved Dr. Chen. His lectures are interesting and he always finds a way to relate history back to the students. His homework is usually nothing more than googling answers to questions he assigns in class, and he gives you an extra 10% boost for never missing a day, as well as plenty of extra credit.
Dr. Chen is one of my favorite professors and I always look forward to his class. He is super funny and offers a unique, unbiased perspective on US history. Tests on the book, quizzes on lectures. Tests are easy if you use the study guides. Most of the class fails the "pop" quizzes, so do all the EC essays to make up for it and it's an easy A.
Professor Chen makes history class hilarious, his sense of humor makes night class worth while. His teaching style is very laid back and the tests are super easy if you do the reviews and study them. I took him for both my history classes and got A's.
As much as he is hilarious, his grading is sub par. Pro: Tells you when he will be having the pop quizzes. Con: They're difficult and he is a tough grader. A lot of the times the lectures don't matches the tests
I took Dr. Chen for a summer class and he ended the class nearly 2 weeks early b/c we got through all lectures. DON'T BUY THE BOOK, he never uses it. Study on pre-made Quizlets and you'll soar. The "pop-quizzes" are never a surprise, but make sure to study terms, b/c you'll just be giving definitions on them for the quizzes.
I skipped this class a lot because all you do it write down the term and he gives you the definition. He goes off topic a lot. Tests are all online and all you have to do it look up the quizlet and it's all there. Such an easy A. The pop quizzes is where it gets you and those'll knock your grade. Final exam was just an essay you have months to do.
Every class is just a lecture with definitions you need to know. Lots of extra credit opportunities. The final is a paper that you have months to do. If you have perfect attendance, he boosts your grade by 10%! Overall, it's an interesting and easy class, as long as you do the work.
Dr. Chen is very disrespectful and condescending. He will belittle you and make you feel beneath him for asking questions. He is very unprofessional & is not willing to help. Teachers are supposed to love what they do, and he doesn't. Instead of helping you, he will encourage you to drop the class even if you have a "B". Im very disappointed
Was an alright teacher. Lecture heavy and having a thick accent, it can be difficult to understand him at times. All the tests are online and straight from quizlet so passing this class is easy as majority of the grade are the tests. The term paper is lengthy so prepare for that. There's probably better teachers to pick over him, but he's not bad.
This professor was very rude and sarcastic. When you ask her a question she is very short with her answers. She acts as if she was irritated by her students when I took her online class. One time a student ask a question and she replied to all of us so we could see the students question. She went on several rants about we are all adults.
Dr. Chen is a fair man, he gives you the tools necessary to pass the class. Everything is outlined in his syllabus. He does have an accent, but it's not bad and he double checks to make sure he uses the right words every now and then. The final is a term paper you have all semester to do, tons of extra credit essays you can do. Do not skip his clas
Excellent Professor. If put in the effort, do your work, and follow directions this course is easy. He may come off rude but he tries to get the students to put in the effort to receive a good grade. The only thing that is a little tricky is when you turn in papers it has to come up zero similarities. Which means put everything in your own words.
He lectures everyday and if you answer the homework questions he adds them up at the end and gives you extra points. Has an accent but is understandable, I took him for both historys and passed with ease.
From the rating I read I think he is probably easier to take in person. I took his class online and it was a lot of work. He checks for plagiarism but when you say "the United States and the Soviet Union" that shows up as plagiarism. Every week you write a 300 word essay about what you read and then a 200 word reply to a classmate.
Dr. Chen was awesome! He lectures heavy. Course load was fairly easy. His accent is hard to understand sometimes but if you ask him to repeat himself he will. Easy A!
I took his online class. You will need the textbook in order to get a good grade. There are discussions due every week (300 word) in essay format and a reply of 200 words. Its not difficult but you do have to put a lot of time into this class.
Took his online class over summer for 5 weeks, and his grading policy is very clear and he gives you pointers on how to improve your papers. Every assignment is open from the start so you can finish the course as fast as you want. 300 word discussions with 200 word responses to only 1 other classmate. Very easy class!
Dr. Chen was awesome! All you have to do is show up and pay attention, you'll do fine. He does pop quizzes throughout the semester but if you interact and follow with his lectures the quizzes are pretty easy. He does offer extra credit but it's mainly participation and attendance. If you want an A out of his class you have to put in the effort.
Chen is an average professor. You can get the book, but I got an A without it. He lectures from word lists. He has multiple online tests that are easy to pass. He didn't allow my class to use laptops. I believe that his teaching reflects that of university professors, but can be unnecessary. He also had a hard accent. Other than that, he's okay.
Dr. Chen really loves history, and is very passionate about it! Show up to class, and participate. There is a lot of extra credit. Tests are open book and online pretty much at your own pace. Pop quizzes during lecture but he tells you when the pop quizzes will be. They are difficult. Just study and you should do decent. HW everyday but easy to do.
Great teacher, make sure to take clear notes for pop quizzes, accent is a little hard to understand but he makes his points clear.
I took his online class and the class itself is easy, the professor is rude and not very helpful. I took History 1302 but its more like an English class because all we do is write essays, he also grades them harshly and gives rude feedback. He was by far the worst professor Ive had at Northeast Lkeview.
The class feels overall pretty simple (History 1302 online) and there are a lot of papers, but they don't feel tedious and long if you take notes during reading. The tests feel simple; basically gives you the test as a study guide. Tends to help with accidental plagiarism instead of assuming it's intentional.
Dr. Chen gives a reasonable amount of work, with the resources you need to complete the (Online) class. You are given study guides for the tests and there are discussions about twice a week. If you put in the effort and follow directions, youll pass with an A. Dr. Chen grades fairly and can see when youve put effort into the work.
Dr. Chen gives clear directions as to what is required, and if you do what is asked, it isn't hard to get a good grade. You have to write about 500 words total every 5-7 days, and a test every month, which is very reasonable. If you make a mistake, he gives you direct feedback which is straight to the point. I highly recommend Dr. Chen!
Dr. Chen is great at giving feedback. His intention is to create a better writer because this is an online course. We have a lot of discussions but if you read the necessary material and put forth your best effort the class is quite easy. I believe he wants his students to succeed and for that reason I would take his courses again.
Enjoyed this class. You have to read and write. As college students, so no matter the major YOU MUST READ! Dr. Chen gives opportunities for extra credit. Easy A. I enjoyed the material and topics. I plan on transferring to a 4-year university and I appreciate how Dr. Chen guides us to produce top quality work. Practice makes perfect!
Overall a very decent educator. Lectures had no real structure, just speaking off the top of the head on certain topics. Accent can be a bit difficult to understand. Term paper was overkill and easily the hardest assignment of the class.
Every week there are discussion posts that are due. When turning them in, he checks for plagiarism. You need to double check in canvas when turning in because "in the United States. The United States" popped for plagiarism. He does not care where the phrase comes from, or why it was flagged, you will be docked points. Easy A.
Dr. Chen's asynch class started rocky- expectations were established via trial & error, but once I got it, it was smooth sailing. Assignments were weekly and an easy A. This was the first history class I've ever taken that I enjoyed and I'm taking Dr. Chen again next semester for 1302.
This professor has truly been an inspiration for me, and not just saying that. Not only does he cover the basic materials of US history, but he also goes over important details that aren't mentioned in the regular history, providing students with extra knowledge. I would recommend this professor to all who are interested in taking his classes.
If you take notes on his lectures and do the homework your gonna be fine. Being present everyday for class and not being tardy are very important for this class because this can easily make you fail. His accent can be a little difficult at times to understand but just ask him to repeat it, he will be okay with that. He will push you to do your best
This fully online course is set up extremely efficiently. He tells you exactly what he wants, and grades you accordingly. The chapter readings are very long and dry, however he also has semi-weekly discussion readings that are a lot more interesting. Follow what he wants and you'll get an A+ forsure.
Easy work as he assigned two articles each week that are due Monday night. Tests were easy and all based on the textbook Yawp, with only 1 essay for the midterm. Easy grade if you are strong with summarization! I loved this course! Was given good feedback and just make you are not plagiarizing when you write your summaries bc he uses Turnitin.
This class is pretty straightforward as long as you do the assignments and pay attention to word count and where you're submitting stuff. It's a lot of writing assignments, every week two analysis's and 200 word peer responses to 2 articles.
This class was unlike any other I've taken. There was no slideshow or structure to the lecture, the prof just posted a list of terms and talked about everything on the list. Communication was definitely a barrier (he had a heavy accent) and the major grade was the term paper. There were multiple opportunities for extra credit though.
He does not really teach at all. Provides readings and you have to write a short essay based on them each week. No lectures, nothing. There's an online textbook and there are tests on it but he didn't mention it until the week before due. If you don't notice it on your own, good luck. However,VERY easy grader. Don't plagiarize and you'll get 100%.
This course this semester was very good and doable. I was able to work at my own leisure and get work done on a timely manner. Additionally, Dr. Chen is a good professor and provided a good amount of work for the class.
This class is very easy and straight to the point if you read the syllabus and check the modules every week (as you should anyway!). All assignments are open from the first day of class, and sources/materials/help are consistently provided for everyone. The assignments and grading criteria are easy to follow, and examples for assignments are given.
Fully online class, no lectures. He provides reading assignments that you must write essays on each week. However, he is a fair grader as long as you put in the effort. Some have said that he does not explain when tests are due, however, due dates are listed in syllabus. He provides several extra credit opportunities. Good study guides for exams.
This was my first time taking an online course, it was an enjoyable and easy experience. Professor Chen provides a syllabus which explains in detail his expectations and how to navigate the course. The modules tab gives clear instructions on upcoming assignments/ tests & due dates. Plus he also provides extra credit & study guides for the tests.
Strange grading policy that adds up to 170% including attendance and extra credit. Apparently, his extra credit is mandatory to your overall grade even though it's *extra* credit. My 85% dropped to 50% due to the term paper and the "extra" credit. His final only counts as one of the general assignments according to the grading scale. Spare yourself
At times it did seem like he was on a power trip which really irritated me. But the quizzes were super easy. For the common assignment paper, as long as you do it and meet the word min you'll get a 100. He lectures through the whole class which I wasn't a huge fan of. But he is a very knowledgable man and has a lot of interesting facts to share.
He was kind of hard to understand at first and I had to record his lectures. He lectures the entire class time and has a bunch of information. Sometimes it was hard to follow and seemed like he went off topic. Make sure to take notes. The tests weren't hard, and his final is the last unit test. He does have an essay that's required which is long
He gives lectures every class based on key terms, but he does not even explain what the key terms are. He skips over key terms and then manages to go on rants that are not related to the key terms. He says we will have tests over these lectures, but he does not remember what he lectured on. He is very rude and is not forgiving.
take notes based on the lectures given in class- they help with the quizzes/tests. Study guides for tests based on the book, do them you'll pass for sure. He keeps track of your class participation with homework as long as you do it, you will have no problem. He's straightforward & can be strict but as long as you do the work you will be fine
Professor Chen is a gem. In light of NVC recently implementing AI detectors for ALL classes, he allows students to review and resubmit their work before the due date if potential flags are detected. Essays are 300 words & discussions 200. I was able to effectively navigate this class with ease by comparing and contrasting the history articles.
Enjoyed Hist2 with this professor! Reading the material, is a must to be able to properly do the discussion posts, but you learn a lot. Clear grading, multiple extra credit available, clear instructions. As long as you read the expectations before, do all of the work in the format she gives you an ex of how to do, you should get an A.
Professor Chen's summer course had various readings and papers, but were engaging. The assignments were time-consuming but manageable. He provides clear instructions on each assignment. He is very strict on no plagiarism, however, each assignment can be resubmitted multiple times to avoid being flagged for plagiarism.
